Just a heads up to all G4 users as you won't be warned or promted but your phone will instantly reboot and start an update.
I was in the middle of browsing when I thought my G4 crashed and turned off when suddenly it started a half hour system update on H811. I was so pissed. In all my years owning android devices I've never once seen this happening.
Not sure the legality behind this but I can see some lawsuits against LG for this. Wow
Btw, disabling the ota like in my other thread gets bypassed and doesn't work.

FYI, that was Tmobile forcing the update, not LG.
I would call Tmobile, ask to talk to an account manager, and complain, then ask for credit on your next bill.

lol, I got calls similar to this every single day as a tech for vzw. Instead of customer service handing the issue, they would be cold transfered to tech. So I would give them 1 day credit of service lost. Usually about $5 bucks. lol Then they be so pissed to demand a manager for a month off their bill. lol

Which department do you work for?
Tmobile has no right to force my phone to restart becuase they are pushing a "mandatory" update, user should always be in control of the updates no matter how important they are.
Thats like Chevy or Toyota sending out a ECU update over the air which causes the car to power off. That **** would never fly... (no offense tho)

I work for tech care, prior i worked for billing. All they would say if you called in was that we push updates out for stability improvements to make sure your phone is functioning properly blah blah blah. That wouldnt be grounds for a credit because youre not put of service for days or even a specific time and we cant credit because you dont like a feature on the phone and that its not an error on our part..stuff like that but rephrased more politely haha as someone said above.. #firstworldprobs

And your point is????? Microsoft is making Windows 10 with automatic updates for home users unless they run a metered connection. Why forces updates in Win10? Because people complained.
It doesn't matter what a company does people will always complain. I say bring on forced updates. Root will always be figured out, and my phone will have bugs worked out.

I personally wouldn't sue but Verizon customers will sue if they have some kind of financial loss. I talked to people from their legal department when I worked there.
And for credits I'd only give them a days credit on their accounts for a day loss of service. Of course they always demanded a months worth credit since most of their bill were in the $500 month range. We'd get fired for giving out too much credit. Out of my 35 people I got hired with in Jan 2011, by Jan 2012 only 5 of us were left. Very high turn over rate, till 1000 of us got laid off at the Southern California call center.

I feel like I need to get this off my chest, so my apologies of this isn't in line with the technical nature of this board.
I RMA'd my Hero a few days ago due to a blown ear speaker (sounded like a bee trapped in there whenever anyone talked), and was sent a refurb Hero that had a broken trackball button. The csr assured me the Hero had no trackball or center button (!!!) and after arguing with him that it did, he finally sent me over to Advanced Data Support or whatever they call it, where they agreed to send me out another Hero. That one arrived today, and refused to accept programming. After 45 minutes with support they finally got it to work by having me manually program it. The previous owners phone number, Sprint email (which is their full name), and city were all in there already, as it was obviously never properly reset at the factory. When they had me make a test call, voicemail, it dialed the old owner's phone number, and I actually spoke to them! When I explained it to him, he said "ohh...uh oh..." like he was pitying me for having his old phone. Out of curiosity, I googled the name, which revealed their myspace and facebook pages. I find this breach of privacy disgusting. Why is Sprint leaving so much personal data on their refurbished phones?
And I'd bet good money the other refurb I was sent, was originally sent in because of that damn broken trackball button, which they ignored and sent right back out as refurbished.
Maybe I'm overreacting, but right now I'm really disgusted with Sprint. Disgusted enough that the EVO looks a lot less enticing than it did a few days ago. :/
Thanks for reading.

Well, that's not very reassuring. If you don't already have one, I'd consider getting an account over at Sprint Users and putting it there as well. I'd not be happy having my phone go out full of my information!
Wow, this is really funny. I would definetly post at Sprint Users or Sprint Community Forums. Wonder if it is possible to wipe that data our selves before sending it back in. Seems like it would be difficult since Hands Free Activation pretty much populates all that info on the phone for you the first time you boot it up.
i hate the fact sprint takes these broken phones, fixes them and passes them off as new. the hero isn't even a year old and their doing this.
I had to get a refurb just this past Monday and before I took in my old phone I made sure to delete EVERYTHING. Although I really don't think it would hurt me too much for someone to be able to steal my identity.
This isnt something you would normally see. I had to edit what I was about to post. But phones are tested and remanufactured with new parts before being sent out. I would recomend if there is one close to you using a service and repair center for replacement rather than having them send one over the phone.... and you get the added bonus of not having to deal with the RMA kit

At no point ever, is an Advanced Exchange ever talked about as a "new" device. Every piece of literature anywhere says its a refurbished phone.. And a tech that tells you different is a liar..
Here you are again spreading lies to get a skewed point across..
I'm ashamed of myself for posting this because I'm so against it but this sounds like a case for bricking before submitting for a replacement.

Yeah, that's pretty much unacceptable. And it's not the first time it's happened, I've read about this before. I would call the news. Seriously. It's newsworthy. Maybe if Sprint feels a little heat on this issue, they'll be a bit more careful with their customer's privacy.
why would you brick a perfectly good phone because there is someone else's info in it? that's ridiculous. you can do into settings and factory reset yourself and you're good to go. no sense in killing a perfectly good phone for no reason....

I think he meant if he had to return his phone he would brick it. You know, so Sprint doesn't just pass it off to the next person as a "refurb" with all his info still in it.

I've read before that user data is stored in the mtd5 file or in mtd5ro. And i dont believe wiping clears out /dev/mtd/mtd5 and mtd5ro. But as nebenezer said you can always brick your phone, or possibly try
Code:
adb shell
rm -r /*
to delete everything. If you really wanted to.... or just delete the mtd5 files, if they actually are where userdata is stored.
So here is the thing.
When the phone is booted up - It polls the tower and says "HEY I'm MEID XXXXXXXXXXXX" - Then The phone says "HEY I DON'T HAVE ANY DATA WHAT THE HELL DO I CONNECT TO" and the Tower answers back "HERE IS ALL YOUR STUPID DATA NOW STFU" this is all of the login info and other stuff associated with the phones owner. The phone can now poll the tower for SMS, Calls, blah, blah, blah. THIS IS CALLED HANDS FREE ACTIVATION
Given overly simplfied.
Even after a phone has been completely reset out of the box brand spanking new. If the MEID is tied to a customer the phone populates automagically with that information. Thank you Sprint for this wonderful invention (which I think Verizon actually started)
So there really is no way to get all of your data off the phone since the phone will attempt to poll the data from the network once it is booted again. You need to make sure that the MEID is completly disassociated from your account to prevent it. Something Sprint has obviously failed at here.
Questions? None? Ok Good.
Kcarpenter, thanks for the explanation. The first phone I had did exactly that, immediately after booting it provisioned itself. The second phone however, did not. It just booted right up the home screen, where the HTC time/weather widget was already populated with the last known location. It appears the phone was never even turned on by Sprint after it was sent in to them. That raises even more disturbing questions regarding their refurbishing process. :/

The Process is very broken. I have heard this happen more than once.
In fact a story about me:
I bought a used phone from US Cellular, it was one of their "30 Day phones" that was only used for 30 Days by someone who didn't like it. I purchased the phone they set it up gave it to me. I got home and started playing with it and sure enough there where pictures on it of people I didn't know. I thought they may have been demo pictures, but I'll de damned if one of them was a naked black chick and another pic of a naked black dude. (not racial just not my thing). I was furious. I took the phone back and told them what had happened. They said it was impossible that had happened and the pictures where mine (Skiny pasty white guy) I had a few issues with this phones a few days later. Randomly dropping calls/signal/error messages. So I took it in to have it looked at. The water damage sensor had been lit up. No way this was my fault - the phone never left my desk at home because the damn thing didn't work worth a ****. They said this had to be my fault because they check this stuff before they sell the phone again. So I was out 200 bucks for a broken phone with pictures of ugly ass naked people on it.
Lesson Learned:
Drop US Cellular if you have them. If you ever by a used cell phone Check it thorughly for kiddie porn and water damage.

Agreed (not the 3D part... you will never get swapped up to a flagship phone) but then this is also where the "you had 30 days" comes into place. Not trying to be a bad guy, I work for retentions and I get thousands of "this phone sucks" 31 days or 45 days or 60 days after it was purchased. Just like you, we have rules we have to follow at the work place and policies in place so, no, it's not that we don't want to help, but you as the customer must also help yourself. A corporation like Sprint, TMo, AT&T and Verizon can not hold all of their customers hands. If you had issues, return the device, replace it, get another and let the company know that the phone is not working that way, by not purchasing that device - getting a device and "hoping" for a fix is not a good strategy and you're only setting yourself up for failure.

ok so under under status theres MIN and it should be a 10 digit phone number with your same area code.
now if you enter *#*#msl number#*#* and go to edit where you see the MSID, what should the number there be? the same as the MIN? and should it be editable?

Well the reason I mentioned the 3D is because it is the same price as the NS4G is/was on upgrade ($199). I figure they are basically just crediting what you paid, and most people would probably go to the 3D is they were gonna swap phones. If I paid $199 and the phone has a pretty glaring defect, I would want the amount I paid as a credit... that's all I meant.

Yep.
Oftentimes we see advice to "go to a corporate store" or only deal with them for serious matters, but in fact, non-corporate stores can be a big help. Here in my area, the local corpstore got sold, and bought by a 'premium reseller'. With that, I found out yesterday, came a repair center. Awesome - I needed one. My headphone jack had become quite useless.
I went in, and within 20 minutes, one of the employees had replaced my headphone jack. No damage, no defects - 100% perfect. And much quicker than I expected. Thanks to TEP, I walked out without paying one red cent.
Why post this? Primarily to counterbalance the feedback on noncorp stores and Sprint repair centers that has come about here. Another user had his Epic all but destroyed by a sloppy solder job - quite unfortunate. But it's worth recognizing that such cases are a minority.
Fun fact: the employee who worked on my device built his Epic from a bunch of spare parts. Cool.
Andrew at the Auburn AL location: if you're reading this, thanks again. Got anything custom on your device? And did you notice I actually had both of Yelawolf's major releases ready in the music player?
Very cool. Good info to have. Also, I find It interesting you're in Alabama. I am as well.
Edit: Might as well. Roll Ride.

I'm the guy who had his phone destroyed by a faulty solder job.
Despite that, I was forced to go back to the very same store with the replacement epic a week after when it's screen crapped out. I ended up getting a good chuckle with the repair tech (different guy) as he put the guts from my new phone into the case of my old phone I since it was still in their inventory. Now I have a frankenphone of my own lol.
Overall it was a good experience at the end of the day.

Haha... I love yelawolf! Been banging that since trunk music dropped! But yeah seriously the non corporate store here in columbia is great... I broke my screen and walked out with the screen replaced in about 15 minutes... they are uber helpful and always have been with me and my wife. I don't even go to the corporate store anymore!

AMERICANS! Lol..I'm in Georgia, and I suffer the Epic as well..well, did suffer it, on my fourth one now (first two I thought had faulty compasses because the SkyMap app would not show anything but UP even when pointing down- did you know when you calibrate your devices' accelerometer in the settings you tap the button and then place the phone SCREEN DOWN on a level surface to get it calibrated? Neither did the guys at the store...or I for that matter, until phone number 3, hmmm).
Any of you guys have a riffbox?

I've been to 3 corporate stores and 2 non corporate in the last few days. Sadly none of them were able to help me out but all were courteous and helpful. I usually go to the non corporate store down the street when my Sprint phone (various) have needed service and they've done a wonderful job.
Back story on the current problem in case anyone has any advice. A few days ago my epic had a sad accident where the LCD has developed a crack causing it not display anything. ADB tells me the guts are fine and the gorilla glass doesn't have a mark on it. Sprint told me with TEP that screen replacement is free (IF they have a replacement screen around). Short of it no one has a replacement screen in Central Ohio it appears and no one will just order a screen. So it appears I'm stuck with the $100 deductible on the TEP... sucks
Asurion (I believe that is right) sent me a brand new phone with activation instructions and a return mailing envelope for my DOA phone. Just call the folks at customer service and explain to them your problem- no need to go anywhere, they should send it right to you..and you won't be without a phone for the RMA/repairs! I am sprint with TEP too, if that is what you are on they should do the same for you.

Thanks for idea I'm looking into them. The online portion bounced me saying for this kind of issue talk to a Sprint Maintaince location... I'll try giving Asurion a call tomorrow and see if I can get a better answer.

I just called Sprint Customer service..I dropped my phone and the screen wouldn't even come on, though touch was still active (could tell by haptic feedback). The Sprint CS will arrange it, not sure if calling Asurion direct would accomplish anything, I never did. As far as I can tell, they handle the warranty for the sprint TEP plans.
I no longer go corporate since the local reseller moved and upgraded its status and can now do almost everything corporates can. It saves me about 110 miles of driving.

I feel ya, they do suck. This is xda though not google reviews.
I tried to inform them about a bug with the BT audio and got a quick and nice reply but sad part is that the person replying just tried to say to update to the c-version which is not available to the phone yet and after that just started to say same things over and over again...

I patiently waited a month for the SD card, and didn't complain or worry about it, but come on you saying I'm not entitled to customer service? Might have been free but it definitely was one of the reasons (not only by far) that I chose the g4 and thus far I've received no customer service. Hell I'd be fine with an auto reply, to let me know they at least received it. Instead vague twitter responses aren't very reassuring

I think their service is ****. I'm in Europe and I don't get that SD card and I paid more for the devce. Maybe I should start a thread
In my opinion every manufacturers' customer service sucks if you don't reach right department.
Have you try making phone calls? Its almost impossible for them to put you on "do not reply" and have to transfer you.
Just play dumb and say "not sure if I dialed in right number" and they will be happy to put you on roulette table. You will land on right number eventually.
Just make sure you have something other stuff to do while they put you on cheesy classic piano music.
Or google.

I agree, I was mearly making a joke about the whole thing because not everyone receives same experience by other human beings.
but i always ask for the situation numbers before hanging up, if they say they don't have it, ask them to create one and provide one.
so when you call back, you can just say i'm following up on a status of situation # xxxxxxx. don't have to repeat. this way, they have it on records.
email, live chat would be my first choice, then go for actual human conversation.:good:
As a customer service person, email is NOT the better way.
Especially when the person flags it as 'urgent' I show it to my colleagues and laugh (not for real tho) because if it was truly urgent why don't you just call. Through email you give them the opportunity to put it off for later as you're experiencing.
When you call them, they're on the spot and you will get the answer. If not, you'll at the least have a case/ticket number to refer too when you call back the next day or something.
I finally got a response after a week of bugging them on twitter and email. They are shipping me a new SD card. Not sure when( they said 7-10 business days) but I'm fine with a response and am OK with waiting. That's really all I wanted, a status update

Got my first one from Verizon about 8 days ago and was loving it, well all except it being a Verizon variant that's locked up tighter than a banjo string. Anyway a couple days in I noticed it would take a few attempts for the screen to recognize my supple yet vigorous touches. Anyway, I saw the support option in the settings menu and called. The first number was disconnected or something lol, the second however sent me straight to Google customer care. I thought sweet they will take care of me. They had me do the usual reset, factory reset, stand on my head, close one eye and fart. Nothing worked so they said we will be more than happy to send a replacement..... But you must first send us your phone. I said haha hold on now pump them brakes. They didn't get the humor but anyways they checked and checked again and still said that would be the deal. I had them email me the shipping labels. While waiting for the bits to make their way into my electronic mail inbox, I pulled my head out and called ole Big Red. No not the larger lady in produce from the Piggly wiggly, Verizon. They were absolutely the most helpful that they have ever been... I was dumbfounded at how fast they had a phone coming to my hacienda. It was there the next day. Well low and behold the phone I got was straight from the Google machine making folks themselves. In all her glory, there lied an unlockable pixel 2 XL..... Yeeeeehaaawww. I got to reading and pecking at the keyboard like a liberal looking for a new fake news article about our president. Anyway, if you're offended it's ok. I found some great information about unlocking, flashing and rooting so away I go. Got it done, not without making some new friends on here and if y'all helped and are reading this, thanks again. I got it unlocked and finished setting it up before I put the Sim in. Fired it back up and good to go. Well, this morning this phone must've been feeling a little freaky because it flashed me. Not once or twice but not stop. Everytime it goes into always on it goes bananas flashing and flickering like crazy. Also, another problem is a larger dark spot about 1/2 inch tall and it is towards the bottom of the screen and reaches across the entire width of the screen. So 3rd verse same as the 2nd. Verizon has one on the way and praying it's another unlockable.

Hmm. Either this coming Thursday or Friday is our 14 day mark so I don't understand why they wouldn't send one. I personally didn't care if it was refurbished because they are like new anyway.
I just got home opened the box and it is another unlocked phone....

Lol good luck. The warranty replacement phone my wife got today was unlocked as well. However, we are just returning it since she decided she wanted the note 8 last night. We have had some serious problems with these phones.... Sucks I was pumped really even with the Verizon variant but these problems have kinda put a damper on it. Well, that and the fact that rooting and romming just isn't as easy as it used to be. What a shock.

Sweet
I am currently on my 4th replacement, awaiting the 5th that is shipping today. Hang in there mate!
Returned them for all sorts of issues, mainly dealing with bad displays (botchiness, graininess, patches, dead pixels) and the last one I am returning because of bad and rapid battery drain. I've tried all possible troubleshooting steps.
I can't get Verizon to replace my phone for nothing.. took it to the store and talked to tech support.. they won't budge
