3G reception on Nexus S 4G - Nexus S General

Is the 3G reception slow like the 4G that I have heard about? I'm getting the Nexus S 4g Thursday do I would like to know.

I was actually gonna start a thread when I saw yours. This is one of 5 or 6 speedtests I just ran a few blocks from my house. Notice I have full bars. This was actually one of the better ones. Ive learned with my NS4G that you cant judge your service by the status bar.

The bottom two are on 1 bar of 4G...

Thats about where Im at on 4g also, but those 3g speeds are awful. and on my Evo in my area I have pulled 10 mbps on 4g. Im really torn as to what to do with my NS4G right now.

shroomz arent you a tech or something? i have some questions if you could help. they may relate to this thread also

Must use speakeasy.net
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
They have much more accurate results. Speedtest app seems to be buggy on the ns4g

I work retentions... so technically... I'm everything.

Top 3 were from the same time as the other screen, the rrest are 4g or wifi. Shroomz, you work for sprint, Im curious. Do you agree there is an issue with the NS4G?

It is a known issue, yes.

They really should just allow us to swap to a 3D to something, cause the speeds I get are about as atrocious as mikey's

Agreed (not the 3D part... you will never get swapped up to a flagship phone) but then this is also where the "you had 30 days" comes into place. Not trying to be a bad guy, I work for retentions and I get thousands of "this phone sucks" 31 days or 45 days or 60 days after it was purchased. Just like you, we have rules we have to follow at the work place and policies in place so, no, it's not that we don't want to help, but you as the customer must also help yourself. A corporation like Sprint, TMo, AT&T and Verizon can not hold all of their customers hands. If you had issues, return the device, replace it, get another and let the company know that the phone is not working that way, by not purchasing that device - getting a device and "hoping" for a fix is not a good strategy and you're only setting yourself up for failure.

ok so under under status theres MIN and it should be a 10 digit phone number with your same area code.
now if you enter *#*#msl number#*#* and go to edit where you see the MSID, what should the number there be? the same as the MIN? and should it be editable?

Your MSID is random and it doesn't necessarily have to be the same area code as your phone number.

so if i see it in view mode and it does match the MIN always then im good? when i view it in edit mode its either 0000000000 or it says unknown, whats with that? advanced tech support said i should be able to edit it to that previous number but its not editable, is it supposed to be? i dont really wanna take it in for some guy to do everything ive already done just so he can master reset it after ive done that 5 times today.

Well the reason I mentioned the 3D is because it is the same price as the NS4G is/was on upgrade ($199). I figure they are basically just crediting what you paid, and most people would probably go to the 3D is they were gonna swap phones. If I paid $199 and the phone has a pretty glaring defect, I would want the amount I paid as a credit... that's all I meant.

who ordered the G1

I have my htc G1 on order in black who ordered and in which color
Mine is on order also.... and it's black. Does anyone know if there is a web page for the android marketplace? I would love to see what kind of apps are already on there.
Also does anyone know how to unlock it yet? I am on t-mobile but I don't like the idea that my phone is locked to their network.

The CTO for T-Mobile US stated the other day that T-Mobile will continue their policy of providing unlock codes free of charge to customers in good standing, so at the worst, you'd have to wait 90 days for a free unlock code.
Sounds good... another reason to love T-Mobile over ATT (try getting an unlock code for an iPhone)
anyone know if there is some place to browse the android marketplace online?

Ordering in a few days was anyone able to order the white version of the phone or at least it looked white on all the vids could have been silver I guess.
tmobile only offering black and brown colors the white im thinkin was just an test phone
does the G1 have an accelerometer? i was watch a video the other day that showed it in google maps in some weird view and when he would move the phone around it would move around in google maps.
Yes the phone has a accelerometer built in. And I have a blck one on order:0
ah i think i might get me one now.
i was going for either the diamond or HD but now that i know this has an accelerometer, im super down for this cool [cheaper] phone

That's an ignorant statement, AT&T allows unlocking of every device except the iPhone. So, in more comparison, you should have said "Sounds good... Another reason to have T-Mobile over AT&T (Try getting an unlock code for a Fuze)" and in that case, you will be able to without issue. Furthermore, T-Mobile restricts you to 1 unlock code per 90 days, AT&T does not have that limit, or if they do, it's never been applied to me.

It has an accelerometer and a built in digital compass, which is what gives you the ability to turn like that in Google Maps. The compass is a neat feature, definitely not a make or break, just something to wow your friends with.
*holds up hand* Black.
I was on the fence for a while because the whole 1 gig cap is a big burn for me. (I use my dash as my "slow speed internet modem" for my desktop) But all good things must come to an end and I didn't SEE anything about the 1G cap on the Tmo site. (can anyone confirm/deny the existence of said DL limit??)
Also, I'm pretty sure that some sort of desktop synch will be hacked out sooner than later so.. I ordered.

The G1's data cap that Tmo had originally stated in their docs has been lifted, they rewrote the terms after backlash from the blogosphere. It has an accelerometer, A-GPS, and several other fun things. Here's a link to a post describing the tech specs in detail:

And the master Giz post for all sorts of info on this handset:

And yes, I preordered an hour after the press conference, in black.

So where can these re-written terms be found?
Found the only info I could, so it's official, it's been lifted:
http://blogs.pcworld.com/staffblog/archives/007798.html
HOWEVER...
"We reserve the right to temporarily reduce data throughput for a small fraction of our customers who have excessive or disproportionate usage that interferes with our network performance or our ability to provide quality service to all of our customers..."
Well, that could mean "disproportionate usage" is more than 1GB, and they're just phrasing it differently so more people will buy in.

Yes but read the quote I just posted, they didn't change their policy, only put it much more vaguely without citing a specific amount of data.

Sprint refurb full of previous owners info!

I feel like I need to get this off my chest, so my apologies of this isn't in line with the technical nature of this board.
I RMA'd my Hero a few days ago due to a blown ear speaker (sounded like a bee trapped in there whenever anyone talked), and was sent a refurb Hero that had a broken trackball button. The csr assured me the Hero had no trackball or center button (!!!) and after arguing with him that it did, he finally sent me over to Advanced Data Support or whatever they call it, where they agreed to send me out another Hero. That one arrived today, and refused to accept programming. After 45 minutes with support they finally got it to work by having me manually program it. The previous owners phone number, Sprint email (which is their full name), and city were all in there already, as it was obviously never properly reset at the factory. When they had me make a test call, voicemail, it dialed the old owner's phone number, and I actually spoke to them! When I explained it to him, he said "ohh...uh oh..." like he was pitying me for having his old phone. Out of curiosity, I googled the name, which revealed their myspace and facebook pages. I find this breach of privacy disgusting. Why is Sprint leaving so much personal data on their refurbished phones?
And I'd bet good money the other refurb I was sent, was originally sent in because of that damn broken trackball button, which they ignored and sent right back out as refurbished.
Maybe I'm overreacting, but right now I'm really disgusted with Sprint. Disgusted enough that the EVO looks a lot less enticing than it did a few days ago. :/
Thanks for reading.
-TM
Well, that's not very reassuring. If you don't already have one, I'd consider getting an account over at Sprint Users and putting it there as well. I'd not be happy having my phone go out full of my information!
Wow, this is really funny. I would definetly post at Sprint Users or Sprint Community Forums. Wonder if it is possible to wipe that data our selves before sending it back in. Seems like it would be difficult since Hands Free Activation pretty much populates all that info on the phone for you the first time you boot it up.
i hate the fact sprint takes these broken phones, fixes them and passes them off as new. the hero isn't even a year old and their doing this.
I had to get a refurb just this past Monday and before I took in my old phone I made sure to delete EVERYTHING. Although I really don't think it would hurt me too much for someone to be able to steal my identity.
This isnt something you would normally see. I had to edit what I was about to post. But phones are tested and remanufactured with new parts before being sent out. I would recomend if there is one close to you using a service and repair center for replacement rather than having them send one over the phone.... and you get the added bonus of not having to deal with the RMA kit

At no point ever, is an Advanced Exchange ever talked about as a "new" device. Every piece of literature anywhere says its a refurbished phone.. And a tech that tells you different is a liar..
Here you are again spreading lies to get a skewed point across..
I'm ashamed of myself for posting this because I'm so against it but this sounds like a case for bricking before submitting for a replacement.

Yeah, that's pretty much unacceptable. And it's not the first time it's happened, I've read about this before. I would call the news. Seriously. It's newsworthy. Maybe if Sprint feels a little heat on this issue, they'll be a bit more careful with their customer's privacy.
why would you brick a perfectly good phone because there is someone else's info in it? that's ridiculous. you can do into settings and factory reset yourself and you're good to go. no sense in killing a perfectly good phone for no reason....

I think he meant if he had to return his phone he would brick it. You know, so Sprint doesn't just pass it off to the next person as a "refurb" with all his info still in it.

I've read before that user data is stored in the mtd5 file or in mtd5ro. And i dont believe wiping clears out /dev/mtd/mtd5 and mtd5ro. But as nebenezer said you can always brick your phone, or possibly try
Code:
adb shell
rm -r /*
to delete everything. If you really wanted to.... or just delete the mtd5 files, if they actually are where userdata is stored.
So here is the thing.
When the phone is booted up - It polls the tower and says "HEY I'm MEID XXXXXXXXXXXX" - Then The phone says "HEY I DON'T HAVE ANY DATA WHAT THE HELL DO I CONNECT TO" and the Tower answers back "HERE IS ALL YOUR STUPID DATA NOW STFU" this is all of the login info and other stuff associated with the phones owner. The phone can now poll the tower for SMS, Calls, blah, blah, blah. THIS IS CALLED HANDS FREE ACTIVATION
Given overly simplfied.
Even after a phone has been completely reset out of the box brand spanking new. If the MEID is tied to a customer the phone populates automagically with that information. Thank you Sprint for this wonderful invention (which I think Verizon actually started)
So there really is no way to get all of your data off the phone since the phone will attempt to poll the data from the network once it is booted again. You need to make sure that the MEID is completly disassociated from your account to prevent it. Something Sprint has obviously failed at here.
Questions? None? Ok Good.
Kcarpenter, thanks for the explanation. The first phone I had did exactly that, immediately after booting it provisioned itself. The second phone however, did not. It just booted right up the home screen, where the HTC time/weather widget was already populated with the last known location. It appears the phone was never even turned on by Sprint after it was sent in to them. That raises even more disturbing questions regarding their refurbishing process. :/

The Process is very broken. I have heard this happen more than once.
In fact a story about me:
I bought a used phone from US Cellular, it was one of their "30 Day phones" that was only used for 30 Days by someone who didn't like it. I purchased the phone they set it up gave it to me. I got home and started playing with it and sure enough there where pictures on it of people I didn't know. I thought they may have been demo pictures, but I'll de damned if one of them was a naked black chick and another pic of a naked black dude. (not racial just not my thing). I was furious. I took the phone back and told them what had happened. They said it was impossible that had happened and the pictures where mine (Skiny pasty white guy) I had a few issues with this phones a few days later. Randomly dropping calls/signal/error messages. So I took it in to have it looked at. The water damage sensor had been lit up. No way this was my fault - the phone never left my desk at home because the damn thing didn't work worth a ****. They said this had to be my fault because they check this stuff before they sell the phone again. So I was out 200 bucks for a broken phone with pictures of ugly ass naked people on it.
Lesson Learned:
Drop US Cellular if you have them. If you ever by a used cell phone Check it thorughly for kiddie porn and water damage.

Oh No I for one and are not putting up with that. I am going to submit a claim to regulatory board OFCOM & Trading Standards. I have already escalated this to T-Mobile as well.
May even look in to small claims court and exercise what you guys called the art of suing lol
I think we have a prime example how to cripple a smart phone here. People would be afraid of using the market to download apps. Use Youtube etc.
They are doing this across the board their current FPU states Android owners get a 3GB limit.
Wonders if the Iphone lot know yet as well because it affects them too.

Thank you for taking the time to post this article though it is something to DEF keep track of. Net-neutrality is a much bigger issue than people make it out to be and will be one of the hottest topic's of 2011 with the way more and more people getting smartphones and "straining" the networks.
I read the actual press release and could not believe the words that T-mobile used "If you want to download, stream and watch video clips, save that stuff for your home broadband." Seriously? Did they seriously just say that? Wow
Pretty aggressive language there T-mobile, I would never expect that from T-mobile U.S.A. whatsoever...

Don't you love their arrogance, because they are hooked up with Orange they think they are best network. UK do not have many wifi hotspots as other countries.
I am trying to leave them due to this breach of contract.
I got this back from them. It doesn't end here..
Good afternoon Mr M
Thank you for your email regarding the changes to our fair use policies for using the internet on your phone.
Whilst the fair use policy for accessing the internet on your phone is being reduced to 500MB a calendar month you will still get unlimited web browsing. This allows you to browse websites and check email as much as you want even if you exceed the fair use policy. The amount is then reset at the start of the next month.
The only time you would notice the change to the fair use policy is if you go over it; then you will not be able to download files or stream/watch video clips for the rest of the month. We do recommend that these activities are best done using your home broadband connection.
The change to our fair use policy does not mean you can get out of your contract. In line with your agreement we have to give you reasonable notice that your fair use policy is changing. The change is being made to enhance the overall service our customers get when accessing the internet as it allows all of our customers a fair opportunity to access the internet and a better online experience.
We remain the only operator who does not charge run on rates: if you go over your fair use amount you can still browse and email, plus we will not charge you any more. So you can continue to use the internet safe in the knowledge of how much you are paying each month. If you would like to use the internet for downloading a lot of data each month you can buy a booster to allow additional usage.
Thank you once again for taking the time to contact us Mr M. I trust you find this information useful.
Kind regards
A

"All-you-can-eat Data"
hahaha.
Big UK forum thread about it here:
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18227835
I've been a T-Mobile UK customer for +10 yrs & this is just ridiculous.
Thankfully, they have now stated that existing customers will NOT be affected by the reduced data:
http://support.t-mobile.co.uk/help-and-support/index?page=home&cat=DATA_CHANGES
Actually, AT&T here is trying to do similar things. Instead they simply removed "unlimited" and pushed out $15 for every 200MB or $25 for 2GB and $10 for extra GB.
F that!

I upgraded last week Monday. Called to see if I get 3GB worth of data and they said yes . Will be leaving them afterwards though as 500mb is pathetic

So you stole your stolen phone?
That's inception type **** right there.
Try this
Not sure but I think Lookout can be added to a missing device. Get the premium version and track it. I know the tracking works, its how I know my kids are ditching school. If they pulled the battery though your screwed. Go to they're web site,it might help.

How will detecting the theft sooner help? Chances are you still won't catch it in progress. Some of those guys are really good at it.
Lookout has a service where you can install the location software remotely, provided it is still on, in service and hasn't been wiped! Hopefully it's lost and not stolen and you get it back

Considering that this guy is enough of a lowlife to steal someone's phone, I would expect that he would post it on Craigslist immediately, especially as he lacks the charger to even charge the device (and probably would not recognize which phone or charger it is).
Just try to look on Craigslist and look at Vibrants. Be suspicious of any without a charger or box and ask him for the IMEI (on the box if you have it). If it is a match then the best thing to do is call the police and have them retrieve the device. Or you could just meet him with a baseball bat.

yep. After stealing my stolen phone, made a time machine with 80 vibrants mashed into 1 machine. Then i went back in time, when the guy who stole my phone was about to steal it, i grabbed him by the neck and dropped him on the floor. Later i called the police, and they didn't believe me that he was going to steal my phone, so i went to jail for a week. Then after getting out of jail, i knew my life's mission was to catch this guy and frame him for stealing my phone. I later googl'd his name, which i'd glanced at while the cops told me to put my hands up... So after googling his name i found where he lived.
I soon stalked him for 2 years, so i knew where he lived what he did, when he did anything. Unfortunately, the day i planned to frame him, He moved. So i followed him to Russia. After following him to Russia, I stalked him for 2 years, and knew for a fact he wouldn't move this time.
So i planned my attack
- AND THEN I WOKE UP.

assuming the phone is on and hasnt been wiped or otherwise logged out of gmail that' a great idea. remember to get the baseball bat for when you find the thief or the low life he sold it to for crack money.
Hey guys. Thanks for the funny and helpful feedback. I saw the guy who stole my phone on the city bus (I knew it was him because he used to go to my high school until he got kicked out and someone as ignorant and clueless as him wouldn't be running MIUI and have a ffc installed on their phone) so I tried to get it back but got jumped by him and his friends (he's a GD). I pressed charges on him and they found those guys after they looked at the tapes from the bus and recognized them from times they've arrested them before. they're in jail for aggravated robbery (They took 30$ from me while jumping me). but I couldn't get my phone back due to lack of evidence that it was mine. (Got a replacement Vibrant with a different number on the box). It's a cruel world and all I ever do is try my hardest to spread love and respect to everyone I meet but it's people like them that make me wanna **** some **** up around here.
Ah the gansta disciples. Punk asses. To bad they werent as tame as the south metro chapters. He pick pocketed from the front pocket though? Gotta say, does take talent.

Just Got a Phone Call From Sprint

The rep on the other end told me that they know that I was the guy who stapled Amy Rabbinowitz's maxi pad to the blackboard in 9th grade. They say they can tell that and a whole bunch more from pinging my phone because it's rooted. The say that if I don't publicly apologize on her Facebook page with 72 hours they'll cancel my contract. I told them no way they can't do that but they told me to read the fine print of my service contract, they can. No courtesy call or anything. Worst part is, Amy Rabbinowitz won't approve my friend request, so there's nothing I can do. I'm just sitting here waiting for the 72 hours to pass and my Evo becomes a paperweight. HELP, WHAT CAN I DO?!?!?!?!?!

Remember: it's not enough to unroot and go "s-on." You've also got to check the "ROOT OFF" checkbox under Menu-->Settings-->About Phone--->Superuser Settings. In fact, you must do this BEFORE you unroot or Sprint will cancel your service and charge you a double ETF.

But only after they kill your hamster and eat it. They said they would do that to me if I didn't stop looking at an iPhone.
Sprint Brother is always watching!!
LOL! That's really funny...
There has to be more to the story. I think Sprint is tracking the rooted users that use the wireless tether and have large amounts of data downloaded. Not just the mere fact that your rooted. Just my .02 cents.
Its like modifying a car. You get a programmer to reprogram the car to perform better the manufacture i.e. Chyrsler, Ford etc cant call you up and say you cant drive our cars anymore. But if you have a warranty yes they can decline your warranty because of it. Same goes for the phone you root it and have a hardware issue that is when Sprint can decline against repairs etc.
I have found that a small aluminum foil tent placed over your EVO will prevent anyone from gathering information from it, this is especially important to do at night when it is charging or whenever you are tethering.
What this thread needs...,
Is a bump,
Front of the line,
Yeah,lol
