Bailing out - Droid Ultra General

Plz advise if this is inappropriate and must be moved. As a result of recent events, I'm ditching my Maxx xt1080. After I get my laptop fixed, I'll just need to dig through and salvage a few files before wiping the phone. I'll start the next owner with a new battery as well, if I can't get to what I want with the factory cord. The phone is unlocked (and rooted), and in excellent condition. May be a week or two, so sit tight. I will update. Any questions, PM only, please

No one cares

You can't sell on XDA they own swappa so you have to use that. I would guess you could link swappa to this thread.

Road back to .91 from .141

Just creating a post in general to showcase my steps in an effort to get back to an unlockable boot loader from the .141 crap moto placed on my phone upon sending it in for repair.
Lucky for me, I was still under warranty so I sent it and and I am tracking it now... For the comment section I told them that I did not appreciate them upgraded me to a really bad version (.141) that made my phone really slow and unstable, and of course caused my once unlocked bootloader to no longer be unlocked.
Actually posting this because I'm frustrated and I hope that it will work so that way if anyone else is under contract or warranty can try and *hopefully* get the same results.
I will update as soon as anything happens.

Moto Mobility sold to Lenovo

Yes I know this has been posted elsewhere but its in the forums for other phones. See here:

Hope I didn't buy a phone that's orphaned almost as soon as I bought it...like my previous phone, the Droid 3.
I feel that may be out future. Rethinking buying moto dev phone now

Very disappointed that Google sold moto.. The maxx is definitely the best phone I've owned.

Sad news. I have to agree this maxx is easily the best I have ever owned. Since my og droid I had been dreaming of returning to moto and just when the time was right , poof.

Maybe Lenovo will slip up and a bootloader unlock will become available. Who knows?

Don't you think the sale is the reason that this phone is locked down so tightly? Seems like it would make the device more valuable to Lenovo.
I could be way off... or not.

This isn't really T-Mobile specific but I'm curious as to why we don't have the Verizon firmware or anything available to DL. Maybe having an unlocked boot loader will prevent you getting an invite?
Sent from my XT1052 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I rolled back to 4.4 tmo except I did NOT flash gpt.bin or motoboot.img. This means I can't take an OTA...
BUT I signed up for feedback or whatever on the moto forums and as soon as I cleared data, my phone is showing a software update. I don't know if this is 4.4.2. How can I tell? I'm also rooted. Someone help me out so that I can capture this. Maybe just something minor but I'm successfully on 4.4.
Edit: Don't know what the update was but it wasn't the 4.4.2. I should have gotten a soak test email which I have not received. Thankfully it didn't seem to do anything and I didn't brick it. I'm trying to capture it so that I can manually install the partitions I need. I can't do it through OTA because of my 4.4.2 bootloader.
has anyone received an invite to participate in the soak test? I signed up for the MFN a couple of days ago and have seen nothing yet.

I got invite long time ago, I am rooted though so might not get OTA
Why wouldn't you? That shouldn't affect you getting pushed the update. Plus, being rooted, you just need to download it and use root explorer or es file manager to open the cache folder and copy the update zip! That way anything custom could also be flashed separately. My prob is that I used the UK build so my boot loader is already 4.4.2... I need the zip so I can manually flash the other parts.

Verizon is not going to support unlocking the bootloader on a non developer device. I'm not sure the point of creating a petition.

But they aren't going to do it exactly because there are people that want it unlocked. The petition is being directed to the wrong place.

I think it was around... never? Yep, that's it. When are people going to realise that online petitions aren't taken seriously? Only exception is if it's signed by millions and the media gives it publicity. Otherwise forget it.

Honestly, I don't see the point. Verizon doesn't want an unlockable bootloader on their devices. There is nothing that can make that happen. They don't want to have to deal with the support issues. If you want a phone with a unlockable bootloader, don't buy a Verizon phone. It is not that complicated. A petition has no bearing on Verizon's decision. There isn't enough customers who really want to unlock their phone's bootloader to install a custom rom.
So good luck to all 17 of you!

I find it amazing you can reply to this thread twice, with no intentions of helping out your fellow xda'er. Why did you even bother replying? It does not take much time to sign the petition. Less then it took you to reply twice, that's for sure.
There's really nothing amazing about two posts. The time wasted here can be matched evenly with, say, signing this junk.
Here's to being blissful time spenders!

Moto X Bootloader Think Thread

Hey guys, let's get a thread going for this. I have an idea of how we might be able to unlock the bootloader of this phone, but I'm not giving promises. First off, we need as much documentation for the chipset as possible (MSM8960), Snapdragon S4 Pro. Also, documentation relating to the boot process is welcomed. I am currently figuring out how the boot process on this phone works. What do you say guys? It should be a team effort to unlock this phone.

Maybe you're just nuts (see what I did there) But anyways, I'm still looking at the boot sequence and how it works. I think we might be able to modify the bootloader exploit for the GS4 since the X and GS4 use aboot and with that we might be able to overwrite the function that checks the value of whether the bootloader is unlocked or not. The aboot partition is loaded into memory first during boot, then the kernel and ramdisk is loaded into memory after on another memory address, whether the kernel/ramdisk is custom or not. There is a custom header in the ramdisk/kernel header that tells it to write to a certain memory address. You can edit the custom header to write to the same address as aboot, overwriting aboot therefore returning the value needed to complete the boot with the custom kernel/ramdisk. I will still have to work out the smaller details but I hope this works

Another idea would be if someone with a Dev edition moto x could check to see if any of the preloaded Verizon apps/services had root privileges. Then it would only be a matter of finding an exploit in the application itself instead of trying to look for one in the bootloader.

Obtaining root privileges has nothing to do with the bootloader.
I know but wouldn't gaining root make it easier to find an actual exploit?

I doubt that. Its Verizon and at&t that never wanted the phones unlocked. Lenovo wouldn't go against their wishes. Plus, Motorola is still Motorola.
The bright side for those who don't unlock now, is maybe they'll be allowed to unlock when the phone is no longer officially supported. At least then they can update through custom roms.
Then again, maybe not.....it is another incentive to get a new phone leaving them locked.
