Hey guys, let's get a thread going for this. I have an idea of how we might be able to unlock the bootloader of this phone, but I'm not giving promises. First off, we need as much documentation for the chipset as possible (MSM8960), Snapdragon S4 Pro. Also, documentation relating to the boot process is welcomed. I am currently figuring out how the boot process on this phone works. What do you say guys? It should be a team effort to unlock this phone.

Maybe you're just nuts (see what I did there) But anyways, I'm still looking at the boot sequence and how it works. I think we might be able to modify the bootloader exploit for the GS4 since the X and GS4 use aboot and with that we might be able to overwrite the function that checks the value of whether the bootloader is unlocked or not. The aboot partition is loaded into memory first during boot, then the kernel and ramdisk is loaded into memory after on another memory address, whether the kernel/ramdisk is custom or not. There is a custom header in the ramdisk/kernel header that tells it to write to a certain memory address. You can edit the custom header to write to the same address as aboot, overwriting aboot therefore returning the value needed to complete the boot with the custom kernel/ramdisk. I will still have to work out the smaller details but I hope this works

Any news on this?
Another idea would be if someone with a Dev edition moto x could check to see if any of the preloaded Verizon apps/services had root privileges. Then it would only be a matter of finding an exploit in the application itself instead of trying to look for one in the bootloader.

Obtaining root privileges has nothing to do with the bootloader.
I know but wouldn't gaining root make it easier to find an actual exploit?

I doubt that. Its Verizon and at&t that never wanted the phones unlocked. Lenovo wouldn't go against their wishes. Plus, Motorola is still Motorola.
The bright side for those who don't unlock now, is maybe they'll be allowed to unlock when the phone is no longer officially supported. At least then they can update through custom roms.
Then again, maybe not.....it is another incentive to get a new phone leaving them locked.

Looks like future Motorola devices might be better off than the DroidX/2/Milestone.
If you are too lazy to read, Moto stated:
"We are working closely with our partners to offer a bootloader solution that will enable developers to use our devices as a development platform while still protecting our users' interests. More detailed information will follow as we get closer to availability."
Not sure how nobody has posted this yet...
EDIT: Looks like this was mentioned in this thread already. Anyway we'll see what happens.
They have posted it all over the internetz and the general consensus is that Moto will just keep locking the bootloaders.
We can always hope though...

Moto did not have to come out and say this.
What is your reasoning that they will just continue to keep it locked if they outright say they aren't?
and in their statement, who would their "partners" be? The carriers?
Hmmmm interesting

Because they won't unlock it now, and this was just of a damage control thing.
They won't unlock the bootloader forbthis phone likely ever, but it is starting to look like they are going to work for their phones being development friendly judging by their recent response on facebook or twitter. I can't find it now, but they did state that they would like their phones to be more dev friendly

They definitely had a reason to come out and say this. It was a direct response to: http://www.droid-life.com/2011/01/1...er-to-buy-elsewhere-if-they-want-custom-roms/
I don't get the feeling that their willing to unlock any of their current phones. Someone would've said something by now if they were really working with devs.
What's most likely is they will phones through google unlocked but not discounted by the cell companies.

Protecting users? That line makes it sound like you would have to go out of your way to unlock the bootloaders. Either by giving up warranty rights beforehand, or buying a "development model", at unsubsidized pricing. Either way is reasonable, but as an average joe, I like warranties and cheap/er phones lol

If it comes out as an OTA then I'll just wait for the devs to get it and break it apart so we can finally have an unlocked bootloader without having to SBF to get the OTA.

I updated my RAZR m to the latest release from Verizon, and since I had not unlocked my bootloader yet, I know I cannot unlock it at the moment. Even if I rsd to the original 4.1.2 I still will be unable to unlock, correct?
Is there any work being done on a new unlock? I'm relatively happy with stock for now, but once cm10.x is more stable, and motors stops updating the RAZR m, I'd like to be able to flash something cool.
Thanks,

Yeah, here's your news; the new update blocked the ability to unlock. You can't unlock, even if you downgrade, but you can still root. The unlock exploit came out in April and people were told to do it, before it was locked up. Dan also said he probably won't ever run another exploit. You can root and use SafeStrap to run older SS compatible ROMs. You're SOL for the AOSP stuff, though. Don't say you weren't warned.

If your on Verizon and got the phone through Verizon do what I did before the time runs out... call them request a replacement device go through all the trouble shooting for your "issue"( I said the ear piece speaker intermittently goes out, yet works on speakerphone thus indicating its hardware related) after trouble shooting and problems still occur you get the green light for a replacement. request that they make a note to the warehouse to send you one without the update (I said because the new update caused data drops that didn't happen prior to update)... I hated having to give up my brand new device for a "like new" one but its better then having a locked device... the CSR in the chat said all devices in the warehouse will be updated 2-3 weeks after the update push so... act fast you may still have time left... if you get one with the update call them tell them your phone is working fine now and send the replacement back... or say something like the replacement is defective and again request a note to the warehouse... where there's a will there's a way....good luck

So I am just gonna suck it up and use it on stock, nothing wrong with it it works i like it. (Bugs me a little bit that i f up =( )
Next phone will be a stock Unlocked Phone so i don't have to worry about this, Been eyeing the HTC one Mini.

Honestly, I don't see the point. Verizon doesn't want an unlockable bootloader on their devices. There is nothing that can make that happen. They don't want to have to deal with the support issues. If you want a phone with a unlockable bootloader, don't buy a Verizon phone. It is not that complicated. A petition has no bearing on Verizon's decision. There isn't enough customers who really want to unlock their phone's bootloader to install a custom rom.
So good luck to all 17 of you!

I find it amazing you can reply to this thread twice, with no intentions of helping out your fellow xda'er. Why did you even bother replying? It does not take much time to sign the petition. Less then it took you to reply twice, that's for sure.
There's really nothing amazing about two posts. The time wasted here can be matched evenly with, say, signing this junk.

Sunshine worked on the Ultra/Maxx up to 4.4.3 but 4.4.4 is locked down tight, that includes the Turbo and Moto X 2014 as well. The options moving forward are HTC, LG (still able to "unlock" by downgrading firmware) or dropping the $$$ on a dev edition Samsung or the N6.

It should work, but is going to be over $100. It spoofs the IMEI to be one that is unlockable by Motorola, unlocks it, and then reverts back to your old IMEI.
Sent from my Blissful RAZR M 5.0.2 from Tapatalk
Shouldn't we be able to spoof the imei without paying $100 for some hardware?
Sent from my HTC Vivid 4G using XDA Free mobile app
The biggest problem with that is the fact XDA would not stand for this method.
Spoofing the imei could be seen as immoral as would tricking Motorola.
Sent from my XT907 using XDA Free mobile app
I don't think morality really would be the issue there, as refusing to fix a flawed last firmware or even making it high impossible to put your own on us immoral enough by Motorola. But isn't spoofing the imei illegal in the US? I think the main issue.
