I was surprised by these visible grids when I first bought it. They're visible and very annoying under any light, outdoor, indoor, sun. It doesn't have to be in direct light as you can see in the pics. None of my other phones - N5, S3, E970, iPhone 4 has this problem. Not even with the aftermarket display on my iPhone 4 I bought on eBay for $14.
I called Sony customer service many times with hope that I might get with a reasonable rep. They all told me that isn't a defect but those are touch grids for glove mode. Really? 99% of us don't wear gloves while using our phones. I'm in Southern California and I've never seen any person using their phones with gloves on. Even for glove mode design, touch grids should not be visible. They said I can send them the phone for investigation but assured me that all the Z3C displays are the same. Sony will hold the phone at least 14 business days after they receive it, for repair or investigation. After a week being on the phone with them knowing they'll return my phone in its original form, I finally gave up.
Many people thinks I was trying to bash Sony with my other posts. Some even thinks I don't own the Z3C. So here it is. After 3 Xperias - ZR, ZL and this Z3C - to me, all Sony phones are very poorly made especially the display. Sony is all hypes and marketing gimmick. However, the Z3C looks very nice. I'm still waiting for a phone to keep, one no bigger than 5 inches with all the available tech from last year (IPS+ or super AMOLED, MicroSD slot, flushed camera, front stereo speakers and 2 days battery life). I'm not spec hungry and I don't think I'm asking too much.
Is your Z3C made with a terrible display like mine? I've heard Sony used displays from different manufacturers for the Z3C. Is this true? Anyway I got a lemon and this is probably the last Sony product that I own.
These "dots" have been visible in every Sony smartphone I've ever had. Being less visible as newer versions come out. To be honest with you, I don't think it's a big deal. Well at least on my Z3C they are only visible under very bright sunlight, and I'm really happy with the display, materials, durability and design overall.
I highly doubt, even coming from one of their reps, these are meant to be there to support the gloves mode, as I have seen them in previous phones when such mode did not exist. But even so, if you are not using the gloves mode it doesn't mean it justifies the fact you don't want the "grid" to be visible in your phone. It is there for a reason.
And yes, they use different displays at random, and there is no way to know which one is yours. Not that you could notice any difference between them anyway.
When people say: - Yadda yadda, they disappoint me, yadda yadda it is the last time I buy this brand, yadda yadda- .....
All I hear is a detractor with a bad experience, not all experiences are like yours and you should give it a second chance before raging and making everyone think your opinion is all that matters. Please avoid comparing it to other brands, they all have their pros and cons.
On the other hand, yes. Sony Customer Service is worse than trying to speak to a wall and expect for it to say something.
I sometimes see little sensors under bright lights, but nothing close to what's in your pictures
You know, there are many other places in the World not the whole Earth is California. And some places are colder than yours so people are wearing gloves while using a cell phone and it's a really great feature not every manufacturer can offer.
So don't be too selfish and stop buying Sony if you don't like it. No one is forcing you to buy something that you don't like.
why is this even an issue? do you like staring at a blank screen? and yes there are other place besides california.

Buy a phone without a touch screen. Problem solved!
Who cares how it looks while the screen is off. There are no issues when the screen is turned on.
I sometimes use glove mode
When I first noticed the touch-grid on the display I thought is was a defect. Like you I had never noticed them on any of my other smartphones, but I can't say it annoys me since I can't see them when the screen is on.
I am glad to hear that Sony has an explanation (regardless of their explanation being true or not) because, as I said before, I thought is was a defect.
I live in a cold country and often used 'glove mode' during winter and spring - if the grid being visible is the cost of me being able to use the phone while wearing gloves then that is a price I am willing to pay; it does bother me, but I tend not to stare at the screen unless it is on.
They are pretty distracting in bright sunlight. They are visible on my phone with the screen on in certain lighting conditions. Although the vast majority of the time they cause no problem.
I just noticed...

I hadn't noticed the grid in sunlight until you pointed it out... I went looking and now they can not be unseen.
Doesn't matter though, it's a nice device and the sun needs to hit the screen at a certain angle so its not an everyday event.
Guys, this is digitizer afaik, my nexus 4 has similar pattern, I was bothered by it in the beggining too but this is not a " bad display" or "fault". I think that amoled doesn't have this but then again amoled has damn burn-in's...
P.S. I am looking to upgrade from my N4 to z3c, it is an amazing phone
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-VbXB9krI4 (you can see the pattern on Nexus 4 here)
All my phones have that
It's not a display problem, but a psychological one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obsessive–compulsive_disorder
It's looks pretty cool under a microscope though!
This is a close-up of one of those "dots" that you can see in the pattern:

I also really love the look of it actually. Didn't realise this was for the gloves feature. Looking forward to seeing how this works out this winter.
I had similar patterns on all my previous smartphones. Samsung, HTC, Nokia all have them, more or less visible.
It's completly not a problem at all, its not like I'm using my phone in direct sun light.

It works fine, it's hard to write using swype.
I've known about this issue since the first day I had it. It didn't bother me at all.
OP, you should've returned it inside the 30 day buyer's remorse period instead of keeping it. You could've gotten an M9.
Just buy a glass screen protector and done with it.

I currently have a UK Touch Pro, and about a month in, it developed a rather nasty "oil patch" problem:

I determined the problem is that the touch-resistive layer was subject to overpressure (my fault I suppose, but I actually do try to take good care of it). This oil patch issue isn't isolated, either. A few other Diamond users have been having the same problem. And just for clarification, it is not condensation, and it is not because of the screen protector.
At first it was a minor issue, but since then stylus input has been getting worse, with taps jumping all over the place unless I tap very firmly. I had tried to get a warranty repair when the oil patch first appeared, but HTC pretty much ignored me, and it was too late for me to get a return/replacement through my retailer.
Without many options, I've been deciding to cut my losses (if anyone on eBay would want it) and move to the X1, as long as it doesn't suffer from similar screen defects.
So have any X1 owners had any problems with their screens? (edit: replies describing any problems would be much appreciated )
There's a thread on this forum about slight "milkyness" or light bleed coming from the upper corners of the screen, it seems a few people are affected. Granted, it's not a functional issue as such (the input isn't affected at all) more of a cosmetic issue.
Mine has it, but only on one corner, I'm *considering* asking vodafone to provide me with a new one, as I can't imagine it will get any better, and I've only had the phone a few weeks.
A bonus for the experia (though some poeple don't like this) is that the screen has a bezel, which protects it a fair bit better than the screen on a touch pro.
LOL, is this what you guys were referring to in terms of light leakage?
no I don't have this on my X1i

Well no, the picture in the first post of this thread isn't about light leakage, but about the really obvious oil patch staring you right in the face
But I did post a picture of the light leakage issue over in that thread.

I thought that was the definitiion of light leakage as well, but apparently folks are claiming otherwise. That's why I thought it's referring to the oil patch. my bad.
Most "oily" patches on a phone are broken LCD, which aren't covered under the warranty. Normally caused by bumping the screen on the corner of table (or similar) whilst in your pocket.
Well my LCD isn't broken, only the touch-resistive layer is damaged (still functional for now, but who knows how much longer). And I have yet to drop or bump my TPro on anything at all, leaving me to believe HTC's design is simply too fragile (my old hx4700 took far more abuse and never had any problems).
So I'm wondering if it's just an isolated design flaw on the Diamond/Raphael (perhaps because of the new flush-mounted design), or if the X1 touch-sensitive layer is also equally hyper-sensitive to heavy pressure.
it's pretty easy just to get a new LCD for your mobile, you can find dismantling guides al over the web; my former HTC polaris had the same problem and I just ordered a new LCD from ebay.
eventually i repaired the screen thanks to the heroes that buy their products just for dismantling them.
it only cost me 60 euros! and i was happy as hell xD
but you can also just buy a new phone and sell your old one for the greater good.

It wasn't so fun for me. I recently broke the resistive tough interface of a P990 (not the actual screen) and ordered an LCD with the camera (the old one had a smudge). 110€ for both but the bad omen came when customs needed another 140€ to let the item pass from China!!!
So in the end I paid 250€ to repair it and guess what, the resistive touch panel became very unresponsive after 5 days and after a failed attempt to fix it (via cleaning the internals) the screen LEDs stopped working. Finally I broke the resistive touch panel out of my nerves (because the telephone was useless) and I had just wasted 250€ which I could have given from the start for an X1.
Reading all those faulty threads about X1 I begin to be quite scared by the fact that my X1 could suffer from these dreaded screen faults (when it arrives). I just hope that this is another case of unfortunate cases being heard more than the good ones?

That's what I'm worried about.
What ever happened to the gold old days of electronics that would work for at least 1-2 years before you had to start worrying about hardware problems? I've barely had my Raphael for 3 months, and if problems come up this easily when I take good care of it, I can't imagine how it can possibly survive prolonged wear-and-tear.
Hello all,
Just wanted to post up a warning about purchasing mirror/protective screen covers for your TP/Fuze/Diamond!
I purchased these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=250365082878
the overall quality of them seems great, they have a protective covering on both sides for the application process (similar to "Screen Guards" brand covers).
but..... upon installation this is the result:

As you can see, it makes the phone almost unusable due to the rainbow effect... what is odd is it doesn't have that effect if I look at the phone from an extreme angle, so if I look at it with the phone laying flat and my eyes right near the hardware keys, it doesn't look rainbowy.... bleh
Just an FYI! has anyone had similar experiences?
Thx

That seems to just be the way those mirror finish screen protectors are. I bought a cut to size proporta echo one for my samsung p2 mp3 player and its like a truck full of carebears exploded on my screen. My buddy also got one for his sprint touch pro, same result.
I don't have a white background screen, it's entirely black. Everything on my phone is black-themed so I don't have the distortion of colors as much. That may solve the problem. Either that, or get another screen protector.
for years now I have been using the Brando Screen protectors.
I've used them on all my pdas, media players and cell phones. The quality and clarity are unbeatable if you ask me.
I just cleaned my old SE W850 which my son now uses. the screen protector has been on the phone for 2 years now and it is still sitting fine! (no corner lift). Sure, the protector is a little scratched after 2 years of service but the phone underneath is as good as new!

Greatest quote ever.
Hahah agreed on the carebears statement, pretty damn funny!
Anywho, I will say this much though, that seller who I bought these from on ebay has been really great as far as customer service is concerned. I emailed him letting him know about this issue and sent these pictures along. He couldn't believe that is what they looked like and was very angry at the factory for providing a product like this. He is sending me 3 clear and 3 anti-glare protectors to make up for this (which I think is very commendable). It would seem that the problem with these is related to the polarization used to cause the mirror effect and then let the light through when the light is on behind the cover.... what is odd is it clears up if I look down the phone holding it flat..... very intesting and annoying!
Just thought I would let everyone know!
I can't wait either.... I feel like I'm tripping on something every time I use my phone as it is now haha!!
Thanks
JFlitt
Not sure exactly what seems to be causing this. As I did have similar mirror screen protectors on my Kaiser and never experienced this.
Perhaps these are simply a bad batch / brand.
I am still running on the stock smooth screen protector (using the tape cleaning method) however, once that peels off I will begin my search for either a mirror, privacy or anti-glare. I haven't found one that I really liked of any so far.
Looks a little like a moiré pattern. See what happens if you put the screen protector on at a 90 degree angle (yes, it will be only partially protected, but this is just a test). If it is less notable, it appears the LCD elements on the screen are lining up with the way the screen protector is cut. Same thing will happen on a digital photo copier. The way the CCD "sees" line art can sometimes do that if the original is a "screen" print (very very small tiny dots as opposed to a solid image). You can "simulate" the effect by taking a good quality pair of sunglasses, and hold it over something like a digital wristwatch with LCD screen, and rotate the sunglasses clock-counter clockwise until the image on the watch disappears.
Not much you can do but get a different brand of screen protector.
Seems to be polarized by the way I see my mirror screen protector. Mine does it too. I have polarized sunglasses and when I turn the phone 90' it goes black (almost, but close enough) so that's why I think it might be polarized.
Also, they scratch to easy for me.
I bought one along with 3 regular screen protectors...honestly the only complaint I have is fingerprints are much more apparent. The rainbow effect is very rare for me...only at a certain angle with enough light...just my 2 cents...

I have noticed my 7.7 has a display discoloration on the samsung logo side. It can be seen best when using the stock keyboard and turning down the brightness. I thought it is how the keyboard looks first, but I can turn the tab in all directions the discoloring stays where it is, so it has to be the screen. It looks like some greenish tint, and fades absolutely smooth so I havent noticed it before. But now that I know it it just hits the eye... I cant or almost cant see it when displaying white or bright colors, I see it most visible on greys.
My question is: does anyone else have this problem? Should I send my tab for repair?

I am one of the ones who claimed to have a perfect screen, it took weeks before I was able to figure out why I couldn't see what was just a part of manufacture: burn-in circles...I use sketchbook pro (notice the little tiny circle down at the bottom?--even that was shedding enough light to keep my eyes from dialating enough to see the backlight.) I just had to make a black image, export it as png, and open it in the gallery....in my closet....at night....with the door closed...and all the lights off in my bedroom to see it.
But it is absolutely invisible with any kind of normal use. Even sketching at night in a black canvas, I still can't see it.
I haven't taken a picture of my screen because I have no other device with which to do so.
Now to the OP: maybe (or perhaps obviously) my color acuity isn't as perfect as some of these photographers. So unless my minor colorblindness just HAPPENS to be to the colors this display is distorting to, I can't see what's wrong with your screen. Maybe others can. I had a friend accidentally knock my 24" monitor off my desk and he actually caught it! --leaving this horrid thumb print on the upper left hand corner....for an artist, ANNOYING....he replaced it.
Anyway, are you talking about the banding from middle to upper left? That looks like photo distortion and not actually on screen. So I'm not sure what you're talking about.
Are you still within refund/exchange period?
Yes, I think it's quite common in SAMOLED Screen, I have been experience it on my SGS2 and Gtab 7.7. At first it's really annoying but I can live with that, the problem is only visible on low light environment.
But if you want to you can take you tab to samsung for screen replacement, I've done that with my SGS2, but the problem is still there.

yep, it will take extremes to notice the screen issue
one more thing is the status bar burn in, I'm one of the 1st who posted the picture of my tablet, displaying a grey image, you can clearly see the 'darker' portion where the notification bar is. but ever since I used the honey bar app + black status bar, the 'status bar line' is almost gone,
Wait, OP, you're talking about the greenish darkening on the left side? I had that on my first tablet. From verizon, except it was on the "top" (in reference to pic orientation). I returned it. This issue is DEFINITELY covered under warranty, and they will service it, either by giving you a new one, or replacing your screen. Depends on how far out feom your purchase date you are. Yes the greenish darkening is what I talked about! I have it on the bottom side (the one where samsung's logo is located. right side on the photo). So this will be solved when I get my device/screen replaced?
I bought in on contract 2 months ago, so still under warranty.
Thanks for your help!
If it discolors the screen on full brightness then yes, its defective. Verizon replaced mine, but it was within the 2 week refund period. I foind one $250 cheaper than the $750 I paid. Unroot if rooted of course!

I sent it for repair. Now I have to wait two more weeks until I can enjoy ICS. At least I dont have to flash it myself as samsung said they will update it for me in the repairing process.
Finally got my tab back with brand new display installed. It has the same discoloration like the old one. Seems like this is just how those displays are... It annoys me as everyone asks me if it is normal that the keyboard looks like that and imho it's absolutely not. This combined with the crappy looking text every tab 7.7 user suffers from makes me think of switching to iPad3. I don't like the format but display is just so much better...
I really don't want to talk bad about samsung, but every time i purchased one of their products at least something sucked or didn't work. This will be my last samsung product for sure.
My Z2 has a very visible digitizer pattern on screen not only when seen under the sun but also indoors with direct sources of light. Among a few other faults this was one of the things I would have expected Z3 to fix but this is not the case. While surfing Z3 pictures found a pattern similar to the Z2's.
EDIT: Also wanted to add that my HTC M8 has no such problem there seems to be no digitizer patterns on the screen under any source of light.

For my Z2 this happens to be a problem, when text is being overlapped by these patterns it creates a sort of aliasing effect granted this only happens with white background and black text but still.
I used many phones, and belive me. I have high demand and standards. And dosent bother me at all.
I saw that on my Xperia arc, arc s, Xperia S, Xperia z and now on z1.
No single aliasing made by that digitizer.
You have defected phone, or you have really sensitive eyes.
Trust me the only way the OP sees this is by flashing a flashlight right on it.. i've head a lot of people talk about this but no one's actually affected by it
Yes.. you can see only with direct flashlight on it, or direct sunlight but you must go with that in mind to see it.
Regular use will not see that.
it's no difference than AMOLED pentile displays like the ones found on many of the samsung galaxy phones. almost any display you will always see things if you shine bright light on it while the display is off. of course this is not really a problem because people don't tend to stare at their phones while the screen is off.
While I agree it's not that big of a deal, I was surprised to see it. First phone in a long time that had it this noticeable.

The reason why the digitizer could be seen is because of the no-gap display that they have made between the screen and the digitizer, allowing higher sensitivity on the screen itself (which is helpful for some people), and also reducing reflection/refraction from light source.

If thats they case they are doing a terrible job, the screen is very reflective.
It is supposed to reduce reflection during usage of the phone when it is turned on. Most glass panels are reflective when there's no surface lighting on it.
Not sure of they are doing a good job with that

I've just heard the digitizer is quite prominent on the Z3. A Google search has lead me here.
Strangley, in the past I had a noticeable digitizer in sunlight on a replacement Nexus 4. It's the only phone that has had it, so it was obviously a mistake in the manufacturing somehow as I've replaced screens and had replacement Nexus 4's and 5's. It did annoy me. Yes, most of the time you wouldn't see it, but in the summer, you'll often see it and detracts from what you're looking at on the screen. Looking at a screen in sunlight is already pretty crap in that you can't see it very well. But then to have an electronic grid staring back at you is even more annoying.
This has unfortunately put me off a Z3 and it's another excuse for me to upgrade my N5 to an N6.
I also noticed this on my Nexus 5, and now I see it on the Z3 as well. It doesn't bother me when the screen is on though. Pixels look smooth for me. Perhaps you have your screen less than 50% brightness?
Really not an issue unless you plan on shining a torch on your phone screen...seriously do we worry about something which is small?

I did not notice it, I guess you have to be actively looking for it.
Its not a big deal at all. Screen functions very well inspite of it
Adding my voice to the "It's not an issue" crowd. Seriously, the M8 also had the digitiser panel you could see if you looked under the right light.
I finally got my phone in on Nov 1 and this is what I am dealing with. https://youtu.be/m0VdgattdkY
On a side note I have zero screen issues other than this. ie I am yet to notice all of the screen stuff people are complaining about. But am yet to see this polarizer issue, so thought I would see how widespread it is.
Thanks
Turns out it was the screen protector and not the phone. Be weary of Skinomi. And it looks like iq shield is susceptible to it also.
If a mod wants to change the title and put this over in accessories, that would probably be a better spot for this.
'Liquid Application Screen Protector Faults'
'Skinomi and IQ Shield Screen Protector Issues'
Something along those lines.
Haven't noticed that on mine when wearing my polarized glasses.
First I've even heard of this problem
Same here, nothing to see with my glasses on, screen looks great.
Yeah I am digging the screen. Or maybe a better way of saying it is it's like every other screen. So far this year I have had OPO, N5X, XL, OP5, Note8, and now the 2XL. Best looking screen so far has been the note, of course, but when not looking at them side by side... It's all the same.
Cept this polarized thing. I keep my phone next to the rear view mirror in the car. So these brown spots are in my line of sight the whole time. It really kinda sucks.

Nope, I keep my phone out of my ass, so no issue with my polarized Ray banz
If you don't put it there... Then how will you ever get the most out of your device?
I have spent more time looking at the screen with polarized lens than without, and it has been perfect. Polarized sunglasses can vary, a $15 Walgreens pair will be different than a $200 pair of Costas, so it could just come down to the glasses. In the case of this video, it looks like an individual issue with the phone.
I have this issue as while with Maui Jim sunglasses. Funny thing is that you can't see them at all otherwise.

Device is the best I've "seen" with shades on! Try another pair of sunglasses

I've tried my Maui Jim's and Oakley's, same issue. It's obviously a defect in one of the layers of the screen. I'll be contacting Google soon, I'll let you know what I come up with. It doesn't happen with non-polarized sun glasses.
That being said, it does look fantastic where there are no spots.

Is your issue in the same spot as in the video the OP posted, or in a different area?

Definitely comparable, but mine is a lot darker on the bottom left and a little lighter in the top right. You can see it throughout most of the screen, though.
Just had an hour long call with Google. I sent them videos with two different lens colors of polarized sunglasses. At first they told me it was nothing to worry about and I got a little more forward with them as I use my phone for navigation on an almost daily basis and wear my sunglasses as well. They said this was the first of this screen issue that they've received. They agreed to send me a advanced replacement and also said that it'd be a brand new device, not refurbished. I told them I can make a side-by-side video and send it over. They were very appreciative of that and looked forward to seeing it.
All around, can't complain about the support, A+ as always for me.

Yeah you've got a bad polarizer on the phone's screen. RMA it

It's a replacement, but without having to send my current phone back first. In this case, it's a brand new device.

I thought Google policy was always to send out the replacement phone first before you send back the defective one.
You're not alone! I noticed this with my sunglasses as well. However, do you have a screen protector? If so, that is most likely what's causing it! I have tested this with 3 different applications of my IQ Shield screen protectors. All had the strange spots. Not sure if it's the liquid or the actual film itself? But I can assure you, at least with my situation, that's it's the protector. I peeled it back and could see it on the film. Screen is fine without it.

Thanks. I will check.
edit: Yeppers. That's what it was. Never seen a screen protector leave brown spots behind. Time to review on amazon.
Wow... I feel like a fool. I never would have thought a screen protector could do that either.
