Yes you will still get OTA updates. Whether your bootloader is locked or unlocked doesn't matter

EDIT: Never mind, it's the 3G version.
EDIT 2: I still think it is fake. You can barely make it out, but the kernel is showing a build date of Wednesday February 11th, the date that the stock 5.0.2 firmware for otus was compiled. Also, the 1 in the 5.1 is quite visibly photoshopped. It has a different font weight and the baseline is off. Some guy took a screenshot of on the stock 5.0.2 ROM of an otus (Styx 3G), photoshopped the screenshot to give it a version number 5.1, displayed the faked screenshot full screen, and then took a picture of the phone showing the faked screenshot.

Out of curiosity, apart from the lack of development, what do you like about the 1st generation Moto G over the 2nd generation Moto E? It has the same size display, a smaller battery, and an inferior processor.
I know the moto g lte is supposed to be better all around, but it's antutu benchmark (17000+) is lower than the moto e lte (22000+). Are there other benchmarks that show it differently?
It seems to me the pluses and minuses of each (screen, battery, etc) make it a wash.

Actually, the Moto E 2015 (LTE) has the better processor. Not by a huge amount, but it's a new generation of processor so it's normal that in some cpu related benchmarks it would pull ahead (specifically if they take advantage of the new instructions provided in the Cortex A53 cores (vs Cortex A7 for the S400)).
Also, the smaller screen size makes graphics easier on the GPU so there, too, the E should win.
To sum it up, the moto G LTE may be better all around, but definitely not on the CPU/GPU level. It's just provided with better screen resolution/camera & front cam/notification light (and tbh I think that's about it )
For me, the E is definitely the better choice.

well first off because it was voted the best budget smartphone.
the lcd is not smaller than the moto e 2015. they are both 4.5" also the g has much better pixel density and has more features.
the cpu may be the s400 but again the reviews ive seen didn't have any complaints. my main reason was for development.

I guess I wasn't too clear. I agree with everything dryhte wrote and prefer my E LTE 2015 to the G LTE 2014. I once bought a G which is a very good phone, returned it for an X which is a great phone. I gave the X to my wife and now am happy with my E, assuming the stock firmware gets released soon. And with time, maybe some of the super-devs will make use of the 64 bits.
Many of people bought Moto E for development , i think ... But although its a good device according to its money ..
I don't care so much about 5.1 (although it would be nice); I'd like some, IMO, major bugs to be fixed ASAP:
Multiple times a day I will touch the power button and the home screen will show up for a few seconds before the lockscreen shows up;
Moto Display will show up as a notification for no apparent reason (never had this on the Moto X);
Closing it seems to do nothing so I don't see why it is there in the first place.
The lockscreen notifications system seems to be buggy, especially with Spotify, where notifications will randomly disappear so I cannot control music on the lockscreen;
This doesn't happen with any other Lollipop phone I use so that leads me to believe that is an issue with the software on this phone.
The memory leak bug - enough said.
Those are just a few off the top of my head.

that's correct. just make sure that you have the stock recovery on board. so ota will work.

The front camera plainly sucks, but then I knew about that I don't make selfies and if I use the front cam it's only for skype type video chat (for which it's plenty good enough).
I think everyone was warned (reviews/specs) that the front cam is only VGA (640x480 pixels, 0,3 MP).

I Already had bought lenovo s660 but it had mtk processer which mean i had to say good buy to custom rom&kernel development.Well thank God :angel: i had bought it from WS retailors returned it back to them and then go confued B/W this phone and redmi 1S. But then xiomi has an tag of chinese phone( and also i had 3 phones from xiomi and did't even last for 7months -_- ) so i then bought this phone.

I got my phone stolen past month and then I was going to buy Moto G due to the price but I waited for the new Moto G and I'm pretty content with this, especially because it won't be that hard to port roms between the devices since they share the same cpu and gpu.

me too,i was just going to order xt1033 within a week ,and now i can get th 2nd Gen woohoo!!!
Yaaaaay!!! I just ordered my Moto G(2) on Flipkart.com on launch day and was able to grab 5 great launch day offers. I already had the Moto G (1st gen) and I sold it off today to get the new one as soon as I read what a big upgrade this phone is in terms of Camera,speakers and SD Card! (5MP vs 8MP and Single vs. Stereo Speakers in new Moto G 2014).
Can't wait to get my hands on it!

Just for pure value on top of the already-great value of the G 1st gen: a 5" display, dual front-facing speakers, SD slot.... for the same USD179: un-freaking-believable. I love Google-owned Moto more than any phones I own, including my 2 flagships (from last year), although all of my phones do something exceedingly well that the others do not.
I ordered one already (estimated Sept. 19th delivery) and will order a second one in white next payday.
I still have a Moto G 16GB for when I want smaller form factor to carry.
Also i want to stock up before Lenovo takes over ownership.

Actually, I almost bought at monday but I tried to buy in a specific website which delivery not so slow as the others (it would take six days to come while the others it was sixteen) but the website was broken and it wouldn't let me buy! I've tried all day long and I gave up! LOL

Ordered on the same night of launch and got 5 offers .Really happy that they upgraded it,waiting to hold it in my hand before the upcoming friday.

do you mean something like freezes or becomes non responding ?
If yes then,
Such devices have some key combination which force restarts the devices (it's like restart switch)
i.e. For Nokia N8 you have to press power key for some seconds
for moto g (may be same on 2nd gen.)
Press and hold the power key + volume
down key for 10 seconds to perform a
force reboot on the device.

I'm selling both my OnePluses and buying the new G and X. I'll use the G as back up and X as daily driver. But if the G battery life is as good as the original, which is 6 hours screen on time, I might use it as my daily driver over the X. Regardless I got to have the X, the original was my favorite phone ever.
The only thing I feel lacking from the G is NFC which I do use, but can live without.

I've got a OPO and I'm surprised you're moving to the X. It's a massive downgrade in battery size, storage and a little bit less RAM for more money ($100-150 more).
The advantages I can see are it probably won't have the buggy touchscreen and the metal body, also more 4G bands but that's it?

I'm concerned about the 32gb coupled with no sd slot. They're putting 4k video recording capability on there (great!) but it seems limited without adequate storage capacity. Not a big fan of cap buttons. I'm also unsure about the difference a quad hd display makes on a 5.2" screen and more importantly if it's worth the tradeoff in battery life.
Other than those things I'm loving this phone. I'm a big moto fan and can't wait to see it in stores.
it is sad that its not going to have ext sd. i wasted my money on a 64gb extreme SD. Well ill just put it in my nexus 9. Really hope the turbo goes to 64gb internal though. Specs sound awesome i just wish it had a K1 64 bit in there, im sure android 5.0 and the 805soc will be extremely fluid, i just dont want to get it then a month later here that devs are really unleashing the potential of 64bit socs. Most importantly for me is the long battery life and awesome camera. 21 mp sounds nice so hopefully it will take some amazing photos and be quick. OIS better be there too. My GS4 takes awesome photos in HDR i just wish it was snappier. Love the fact they went with 5.2 qhd, perfect moto! If they want this thing to sell out then they need at least a 5mp front facing and an awesome price point. Most importantly, dont you dare put all that bloat in there!

why would 5.0 be the determining factor??? Even if the phone ships with 4.4.4 it will probably be the first device (maybe second to the Moto X) that will receive the update....
im holding out hope that it ships with 5.0...but i would imagine it would only be maybe a month or so before it is updated...it will be updated before any non-Moto devices get 5.0...

My main concern is that nothing has yet mentioned optical image stabilization. At 21MP, this thing will likely pick up shake pretty easily.

the 2013 Moto Droids were basically the first phones on 4.4...the Droids run as close to stock android as you can get without being stock they get updated crazy fast...
It has an ips display? Are you sure? The active display is pointless then. It would kill the battery.
Well, I couldn't be happier. I love the Nexus 6 specs, but i just don't want a phablet. So i was back to the same problem...M8, Moto X+1, z3v. But...they each are missing something i really wanted. I got my Galaxy Nexus 3 years ago...and when I got that I kept thinking the next phone would FINALLY be the phone, the one I've been waiting for. But, until now, nothing's come along. I'm FINALLY happy to pay full retail price to keep my unlimited data and get a sweet phone.
Downsides? I do wish it was IP67/8 rated, had the expandable memory, and a customizable back, but those are far from deal breakers. Now, i just want the price, release data, and if there'll be a play store version (I'm assuming highly unlikely...has there ever been a Droid in the Play Store?)
Not a play version, but there have been Dev. editions with unlockable bootloaders.

The waterproof coating they use (assuming its the same as the 2013 moto x) is really good. Other than having to wait for your speaker to dry out to sound normal you could basically dunk it under water without concern. I didn't do it...but other people did

I'm wondering this as well. What sources state that it will have an ips display?
The nexus 6 seems to have amoled, so it really only makes sense for Motorola to continue the trend and support their active display.
The only reason I wouldn't get this instead of the Nexus 6 is because I just can't have a locked bootloader and root that is virtually impossible to crack until it's too late ie. the Droid Ultra/Maxx and all devs have moved on to more developer friendly phones
If I'm right...don't they usually release/announce the Developer Verizon months later? Cause unless it'll be within a month of the initial release, I can't keep dealing with my GNex. I've run every ROM out there... and this thing needs to be euthanized

Just saw this myself and was going to post it. I'm totally sold assuming no weirdness happens to the phone (gets neutered, 3G only, etc) on the way to market.
I was just about to post something about liking the Turbo phone but not a Verizon client. Not even in the US.
This would be a much worth it upgrade from the Moto X. The Moto X is prettier that's for sure, but the processor power, and power management (battery and rapid charging) are totally worth it.

Let's analyse this a bit further:
This phone is a flagship killer for the following reasons:

Great screen
Great battery life

It's also safe to assume that all the software features are shared (driving mode, touchless controls, assist, etc...
Losing the Verizon branding also indicates that the bloatware is gone, delivering a closer to Vanilla Android experience as ever. This also means that the phone will get updates much earlier than branded version (theoretically)
Not so great:
No expandable memory, no SD slot
Can look better
Doesn't have the Moto X curved back, which once you experience, you feel really awkward holding other phones in your hand.
Lack of front facing dual speakers
Size and weight (a trade-off for exceptional battery life)
Capacitive buttons (and for many reasons):
Android L comes with a different button icon set, means the current capacitive buttons are going to be outdated
I prefer having (and I do add using GravityBox) a menu button at the far right
Phone space wasted even though it frees up more room on the screen
If they add the SD support, improve the look, get it curved, add dual facing speakers, remove capacitive buttons and get it a little bit smaller (even if it means a smaller screen maybe 5 inch) in my opinion this would be THE PERFECT phone.

I agree about the cap buttons, I greatly prefer to setup an old school four button setup which obviously cant be done with the capacitive unless I want to give up screen real estate or go to pie etc. Still this phone is about the only one that captures my interest right now and I need something new cause the phone slut in me is crying out for something new. I just read that the Moto Maxx name has been trademarked in the US btw so that makes it likely that it will have the right freqs for Tmo and/or AT&T even if it doesn't see carrier release. I wouldn't rule out a neutering either which is why I mentioned it above. Still I think there is hope, Motorola got in deep with Verizon because they needed them when they were on the long slide down but this is no longer the case. Nor am I sure Verizon really cares all that much since the vast majority of people wouldn't know the new "droid" and it's international counterpart where the same thing. For this reason I'm hoping if it is restricted it will only be carrier release in the US but admittedly that's in part due to wishful thinking.
I am hoping for it myself, I just don't want to have that much high hopes, so that I don't get greatly disappointed pessimistic view I know. Hope is there though, I agree. The fact is the droid turbo is winning card, hopefully Motorola is "allowed" to use it, and Verizon can be a little forgiving.

You forgot to mention that it has wireless charging. This is a big selling point for me since I have a Nexus 5 and was the main reason I wasn't going to get a Moto X. With such a large battery it's perhaps not necessary on the Turbo, but since I'm using a new Nexus Qi charger as my car's dash mount, I really didn't want to lose that.

To be honest, that was deliberate. My understanding is that Wireless charging is SLOOOOOOW, so freaking slow.
Think of how "Normal" charging is so slow compared to the phone's turbo charge, then think of even slower than that. Once you go turbo charge, you won't be able to come back.

As mentioned, I'm a Nexus 4 owner. My phone has developed hardware problems though, and I'm looking at replacing it -- mainly focusing on the Moto G and E.
I'm not a hardcore phone user; other than communications mostly use it for music (Google, Pandora, Youtube), light reading, occasional surfing in line, and a single non-graphics intensive game. I also use my phone to double as a camera when I'm out walking and something cool comes up though, which is the main reason I'm considering the G over E. Price isn't a huge issue, but I don't see the need to buy some fancy $600 phone for my light use.
All that said, I'm not on a contract, and was wondering about the OS/experience/apps on the E. I've only ever been a Nexus owner, because I wanted to avoid carrier/manufacturer stuff. How easy/feasible is it to get to a version of the latest stock Android OS without any Motorola/etc. stuff on the phone -- essentially, to replicate my basic 4 interface/experience? How far behind are E OS updates behind stock Android updates? Is there any general timeline for how much longer it will continue to be updated?

I presume you are interested in the LTE model. Moto E updates will probably around 2 months behind Nexus updates. The device has already received the 5.1 update, and I'd expect it to receive the Android M update as well. Beyond that version, I'm not sure how long Motorola will support it, but I'd expect a fairly long support life for this model since the MSM8916 is a new generation SoC. The OS experience is pretty clean and good (provided you don't get a carrier bloatware infested model). The original 5.0 stock ROM was a bit rough around the edges, but the phone is very smooth and great with 5.1 installed. Stock software and CPU wise, it's a good user experience. It has excellent battery life too.
In terms of aftermarket ROMs, the device is still fairly new, but it has a growing development community (myself included). Not everything works perfectly on the custom ROMs right now, but I'd expect things to improve over the next month or two.
The camera will probably disappoint you though. The rear camera is usable in good lighting, but mediocre in indoor lighting. The front facing camera is quite poor (noisy and low resolution).
The second generation Moto G has a better camera than the E LTE, but it has an older and slower CPU. I'd expect the 2nd gen Moto E with its new SoC to continue receiving updates significantly longer than the 2nd gen Moto G. I guess you want to get a device right away since your Nexus has stopped working, but if you can wait a little while, the 3rd gen Moto G will probably be coming out soon.

Honestly I own a 1st gen Moto G, 2nd Gen Moto X and the 2015 Moto E... I think for your wants and needs and if you do the research your be happier with an X ... All the above mentioned are great devices in their own respects but I found the X at the price point to be an excellent device without and significant compromise. The Moto E with LTE is a decent device with a so so display and a lack luster camera...other than that solid for a entry level phone. The G has a decent display and a better camera but at the price point may as well look for an X on sale ... Just something to think about.

The camera on the moto e is a downgrade from the Nexus 4. And it has no flash. I think the biggest thing to take into consideration is the screen size you want. And if you want a stock Android experience with no bloat. You should probably stay with the Nexus line. Since it sounds like 2 nexus phones are coming out this fall.
And is the hardware problem on your phone the battery bulging out the back?
I should be picking mine (VZ) up from BB tomorrow or Tuesday. If you still don't have the phone by then I'll compare it to my N4 for you.

I recently bought a Moto E 2nd Gen LTE. I came from a Galaxy SIII (problem on the bootloader files in another thread). My impressions on the Moto E:
-For the price of AU$240, you get a reasonably fast device, it's not faster than my old S III but it does the job.
-Battery life is impressive, it really is, no kidding. Fo far my personal record is 2 days 10 hours 22 min , by just connecting it when driving using the GPS (2 times a day). Normal use. With a bit more intense use (including Skype for about 15 - 20min ) it last a full day and still some juice in the bank

-Camera in the other hand ... ... is not as good. Again I can compare with my S III and it's way behind in colours, sharpness and general performance. ahhhh and it does not have a LED -flash.

Are you up for WP? 640's are going for $80-100. Yes it's not Nexus, and it's not even Android. But I've always been impressed by the cleanliness and purity of WP. Apparently Wal-Mart is selling AT&T 640's for eighty bucks (and AT&T phones can be unlocked without an AT&T account). Just an idea.
My nexus4 died while I was at diner last weekend, so I went to the best buy next door and purchased the 3g/1gb ram version (xt1511) for $80. I'm really happy with it, the battery really is impressive! There is a noticeable lag when opening an app or switching between apps, but once in an app it functions smoothly and quickly. My version doesn't seem to be carrier specific, I think it was labeled as GSM unlocked at best buy. My phone is running stock 5.0.2
Since some people seem to think Nexus 5x is overpriced/underspec'ed and think that the Moto x play or style are more viable options, what are some of your reasons for getting one or the other?
I personally pre-ordered the Nexus 5x but am reconsidering because the Moto X play is similarly sized but with a bigger screen, expandable storage (32 gb may not be enough or pushing is close), and way bigger battery.

For Nexus 5X: Finger print scanner. Guaranteed updates for a long time - unlike moto X 2014 on at&t (not getting 6.0) - which for me is a huge deal and causes me to distrust Motorola. Smaller form factor. Better camera in low light (I'm hoping, but it sounds like it will be).

Verizon Moto X isn't getting it either. Even the Moto E was axed. That's really bad that phones only a year old is not going to get the update. Like you, I really lost respect for Moto

Moto E was just released this year, and its not getting 6.0. That's real sad, for me its a no brainer to go the Nexus route.

Thats interesting I didn't notice that Moto left out the Moto x 2014 from the update list. Maybe it will be added later? Or did they explicitly say it will be left out? Also the Moto X play was the intriguing phone for me since it's practically the same size (within 3 mm in all dimensions). But way bigger battery, storage and screen (bittersweet, may be too big).
Nexus 5x for me has better screen size but still bigger footprint than size suggests. Also 32 gb may be too little especially with increasing app size. Updates are key to me.

Yeah people that bought the carrier moto X should have seen that coming. The moto X pure was released for a reason. The carrier version was for people on a budget that wanted a decent performing smartphone and didn't care about rooting or Android version numbers

Actually if you look at the spec list and even the phone arena size compare tool with overlap you will notice that the Moto X play is only very very close to the footprint of the 5x but with a bigger screen and its thicker but has micro sd slot. Only thing that doesnt seem great is the performance which is hit or miss for some. It even has CMod.
Also I pre ordered the 5x as well so I'm not here to sing praise but I noticed the X play and wanted to get people's opinions.
TL;DR - I'm returning the Moto X Pure (for now) in order to give the Nexus 5X a shot.
Here's my opinion on 5X vs Moto X (2015 Pure in my case).
I'll start off saying that I've become incredibly picky with finding the perfect phone for me, or at least close enough. There's no such thing as the perfect phone for everyone.
My general requirements (desires) are:
Decent processor/storage/battery/camera. Top notch specs aren't required.
Rooted and unlocked bootloader or the ability to flash custom roms if not fully unlocked
Stock or close to stock android or CM12.x
Compatible with Verizon (still have unlimited and not giving it up)
I'm coming from an LG G2 (Verizon VS980) which I ran from 11/2014 until 09/2015. It was rooted and running CM12/12.1 or a variant. It ran great, few complaints other than battery life (a little over 3hr SOT max, often less). 32gb was never an issue for my usage and I don't do any gaming so top spec'd processor doesn't really matter as long as normal OS navigation is smooth and fast.
I preordered the G4, but the lack of development and having to run LG's skin turned me away. I also had issues with missed touches and some strange screen glitching that appeared to be related to defective HW. I returned this and went back to the G2.
I thought the Moto X Pure (2015) would be perfect. It has a good processor, battery and camera. The fast charging is fantastic and gets me from 20ish% to full on my 45+ min commute using a QC 2.0 Anker car charger. I love the weight and the feel of the device, feels premium to me. But it's a bit too large even though I have large hands and can grip fully around the device without issue. 5.2-5.5 is the sweet spot for me. I've been experiencing a lot of lag, and honestly the G2 feels a lot faster. I didn't expect to have lag with the Moto X especially since it's mostly stock Android. I also haven't had good battery life even being rooted, unlocked and running greenify along with some other wakelock-reducing tweaks (wifi, BT, location are always on and I don't turn off syncing of anything in my google account). Phone is off the charger daily around 5-5:30am and while I have the ability to charge at work and to/from work, if I don't, I get around 18hrs off the charger and MAX of 3hrs SOT. Maybe that's good, but it just doesn't seem to cut it for me.
I'm going with the 5X in hopes that the size will feel better, the 1080p won't draw as much power so the downsizing from 3000 to 2700mah will be a moot point. I think the camera will live up to my expectations. I'm into photography and have a Canon 6D along with some nice L glass that I pull out when I need a good photo. Since I don't do any gaming or run apps that really hog any memory, I don't expect the 2gb RAM to be an issue (it was fine on the G2).
I should know soon enough if the 5X will be the right phone for me. I'm optimistic, but if it's not, then I'll be able to compare to the Moto X Pure and decide to keep the 5X or to repurchase the Moto X Pure. They're the only 2 phones on the market that seem to meet my criteria.
My apologies for the long-winded reply, but hopefully this will help someone else.

I'm on of those who had a bad experience with the Moto X Play. Some tell me theirs has no lag at all, mine lags for the most simple tasks. Swiping down the quick toggles while inside Google Play Music is the worst. I can't recommend it.

On my 2nd gen X (att... Not pure) I had a lot of those issues. Notifications and recent are by far the worst. Actually caused me to sell it and go back to N5

I'm having the same difficulty deciding as well. I think performance will be mostly equal as will battery. I never cared about a finger print scanner, and the updates will be not that far away from each other (i'm confident moto will have it by month's end, which might beat some peoples Nexus 5x/6p shipments). The biggest thing here for me will be the moto add ons like moto voice, turbopower charger and front speakers compared to the Nexus 5x's smaller yet preferred size and most likely better camera.

OK first of all those are CARRIER decisions that Moto has nothing to do with. Which is why the are releasing it for the Pure Editions (which they control). Blaming moto isn't fair, blame your carriers.

I'm going with the 5X in hopes that the size will feel better said:
First the Nexus 5 was my favorite phone of all time. I still miss it. BUT it obviously had some shortcomings. Battery life wasn't one of it's strong points and even though 6.0 will be more efficient I'm going to be in the camp that if you were not happy with 18hrs/3hr SOT then you won't be happy with the 5X battery time is my guess. I'm really torn myself, I think I'm going to skip over this round and wait until the 820 SoC phones come out.

Why should I blame the carriers when I had the Pure? They were slow after 5.0 and that's a problem

Alot of those Moto perks were likely determined/designed while Google still owned Moto. Now that they dont, I'd be very wary of them keeping it up down the line past a year. Of course, most of you will have a new phone by then anyways.
