Nexus 6 5.1 Encryption Performance - Nexus 6 General

It seems that Encryption has got a big performance boost in 5.1.
I ran Androbench on my stock Nexus 6 running LMY47M.
My results using stock androbench settings.
Sequential Read|Write
161.53 MB/s | 74.75 MB/s
Random Read
20.0 MB/s, 5187.28 IOPS (4KB)
Random Write
7.98 MB/s, 2052.08 IOPS (4KB)
These numbers are actually higher than the unencrypted numbers AndroidPolice and Antutu reported back when the Nexus 6 first came out.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/1...us-6-encrypted-vs-unencrypted-its-not-pretty/

Yeah I'm not even gonna mess with unencrypting mine. It's as fast as me already. I don't care about benchmark numbers.

Here's my androbench decrypted.

Using NEON instructions now. Should help a lot, though it's still not hardware accelerated.

Since I have my work email on mine I've had mine encrypted from the beginning. Now I don't feel any performance hit though. I just ran the benchmark to make sure it was more than placebo.

Same here. I had to enable a pattern to be able to access exchange server. There are exchange security bypass hacks out there you can load to remove that dependency (was for the Note 3 anyways) but I'm gonna leave it be.

I'd like to see someone check how the CPU is hit during heavy I/O now.
Remember that it could be pegging the CPU in order to keep the data transfer fast, which would have an impact on CPU intense applications and battery life. Real world use includes I/O *simultaneous* with CPU. Benchmarks only test them separately.

This is good to see. Once 5.1 or whatever settles in, I'm going back to encrypted and locked down

Also decrypted, results are pretty similar. Staying decrypted, phone is flying. Barely no stutters or lag.

I can't take that decision for you. I don't really care about encryption. If they steal my phone, and don't know my password they only can get data off my sd card. Which I don't really bother.. What bothers to me is how the phone feels. And I decrypted it on android 5.0.1 And the phone did feel allot faster. On 5.1 decrypted the phone feels just as fast, I haven't used 5.1 encrypted, so I can't tell the differnce on 5.1. But I think the phone wil feel faster decrypted. So you could give it a try.

I will, I'm actually waiting for the whole drama with the different 5.1 builds to be solved and then I will decrypt the phone

I was in the decrypted camp on 5.0... Didn't bother on 5.1 and honestly it's fast. No lag or stutters

My N6 still sucks opening apps. I'm so tired of this phone feeling slow. I still have my N5 because I'm procrastinating selling it but its running stock 5.0.1 and all the apps open instantly. I tested it against my decrypted N6 running 5.1, and my N6 is way behind.. Androbench says my sequential read speed is 187.72MB/s. Now if I reboot my phone it'll probably clear some apps from memory and do better idk I'll go try but either way sometimes it does better after a reboot, but it is nowhere near as fast as loading apps on my N5 and that bothers me so bad..

OK after reboot its sequential read is at 192.84MB/s. Its performing a little better but this wears off for me. I can't keep rebooting my phone to get a little speed increase. Is that a bad result? Should my phone do better being decrypted? I can't stand it.

Does the encryption go away once you root the device or is there a thread on how to decrypt the device?

Encryption and root are independent of each other. You can do either, or both in any combination.

I really hope Google comes out with a new Nexus 5 soon. I was hearing they were gonna do that. I'd rather get that and sell this phone if that phone ends up having faster storage speeds with similar specs. This phone is terrible.

Any new phone will still use encryption and if Goog doesn't want to shell out the fees to Qualcomm it is still going to be software like it is now. Maybe a newer proc would be better at handling it though? Not sure.

N5 on ART was already faster than G3 on ART due to the os being light and without a ton of stuff.
the Lolipop preview isn't that buttery smooth as some might want to make it. put some apps there and you will see it stutters from time to time, though the animations and everything are cool and it looks fast and polished for a preview.
if / when we get lolipop from LG we will see how fast it will be on our hardware (given the screen and so on ...).
Kitkat was lighting fast on the n5 as well
Got it installed yesterday on my N7 2013 and the tablet is much faster than it was on Kit Kat.
I've found so many positives I don't even know where to begin.
Can't wait to get this on my G3!!!

Not sure about that.
I used Wugs Nexus Root Toolkit to root/unlock then ADB to flash the Lollipop 5.0 image.
I really didn't care about my data on the N7 - I had backed up all my files before I started so I just wiped the tablet clean.
Used it earlier today, very impressive.
Would be great if one day we'll get to experience it on the G3!
Yes I used it on the n7 but went back to KitKat. I want it when everything is ready and I want a kernel with faux colors. The display is faded and I'm so used to colors that pop

Nexus 9 is #1 on Passmark

Looks like the Nexus 9 far surpasses all other tablets in performance.
http://www.androidbenchmark.net/passmark_chart.html
Amazing how much of a difference there is. While the Nexus currently scores an average of 8152, the Samsung Galaxy S line of tablets score around 5500. The Nexus 10 and Nexus 6 both score around 4000. The original Kindle Fire, which was my last device, scores just 1400.
EDIT: The Nexus 9 is also the fastest device on Antutu.
Yet constant reboots and freezing apps like chrome and gmail make it frustrating to use.

This tablet has been factory reset probably 20 times between trying all the kernels and a few of my own, resetting is just a temporary fix. Factory resetting isn't doing anything special. Its just clearing cache and ram giving a temp fix. When the tablet heats back up starts throttling and ram starts filling up, the same issues come back every time. Trust me, I wish it was that easy. I really want to like this thing.
I have no idea what people do on/with their tablets to cause these so called issues but I don't get any of those problems with mine. Perhaps if people stopped effing around with them then they would work as expected. Just saying........

3 tablets 3 times? Doubt it. I don't think this should be news to people. I will say this though- being slow at opening some apps happens all the time. My nexus 5 is always faster than the 9.
The lag OTOH, only gets really bad proportional to heat. While browsing earlier the CPU got to over 140°(F) in a relatively short period, and that is when it turns in to a lagging turtle of a tablet. I have not looked at any of the thermal cut offs in source, but it didn't seem to be going past 1500 MHz.
Add to this not much free ram, which happens all the time on this tablet, it becomes a nightmare.
But, I either get pissed and return , or I get pissed and want to help. So I cloned the source get it compiling now I have a few things I wanna try. One seems to be at forefront as soon as I have so me patches in my treeq may I'll give it a whirl.
Gotta get back accustomed to git its been a while.

So Ive nerver used encryption just because of having to wipe device if I need to do other things like root flash etc but since development for this phone is null I took the plunge crazy thing is AnTuTu before was at almost 52000 I was expecting a decrease but to my surprise AnTuTu jumped to almost 54000... +1 for a layer of security +2 for not giving up performance..

It's going great so far I mean I've had Android since day 2 with the og droid. So I tinker ALOT! I'M RATHER IMPRESSED... Id lie if I told u it was faster but I see no change so far.. Weird though about the benchmark increase!
Motorola was smart enough to use hardware acceleration for encryption. Google...not so much.

I have some bloat apps disabled... Cleaned cache.. That's about it I have go sms but that wouldn't Matter..

Hi, I'm new here, so first I'd like to say hi, I'm the proud and happiest owner of a brand new Moto Maxx (I'm from Argentina).
So far the phone feels great, and after reading this post I decided to turn on Encryption, and so far it works great, since I don't notice anything different with the phone, being snappy as I've felt it these days.
I'm in love with this phone.
««Droid1019, to turn encryption on you need to have full battery (100% charge) AND being plugged in with the charger turbo or otherwise).
It says it takes around an hour, but in my case it wasn't more than 30 minutes I believe)»»
Recommended, although in my case I have one complaint.
I turned encryption with PIN enabled as the unlocking mechanism, and so when the phone turns on it asks for my PIN. But when the phone is locked, anyone can turn it off without the PIN, though making the encryption less effective if my phone gets stolen, since even when locked and encrypted I can't locate my phone with the "find my phone Android equivalent", whose name I can't recall right now.
I really dislike this "feature".

Just encrypted mine. Took a total of 5 minutes. Will see if it's faster than before, however I had none of the problems anyone else had. And I didn't wipe anything before upgrading.

Android 5.1 Lollipop OTA released for Tegra Note 7

Just saw on Twitter that NVIDIA has announced the release of Android 5.1 for Tegra Note 7 and Shield Portable.

I'm not seeing it, but am currently rooted.
Anyone have the zip?
cant see it either...
it got available for the shield portable devices. i read that news on androidpolice.com
but didn't know that nvidia said it is available for our TN7 (which isn't true for the moment). maybe it needs a few days to roll out to every one.

Seriously, I'm disappointed too. We waited months for it and now it lacks it's charm.
Some people are saying that it's faster than before and even high-end games are not lagging even a bit.
I didn't try any game like that yet, but it still feels a bit laggy anyway.
Plus, the thing I miss the most is the split system of notifications on the left, and quick setting on right. And we can't change performance settings like before such as to use 2-cores. My quick settings widget is not working either.
I just updated, and I'm already missing my 'old tablet'.

Man i used to love this tablet a lot! It's a bit ruined now.
I still think NVIDIA should release smaller updates to better the layout and options. The notification bar is so narrow, it feels like I'm using my phone. Though, I don't have high hopes given how much time it took for this update. :fingers-crossed:

The stylus recognition has improved immeasurably ,and thats the only positive thing that i can say about the update.
I'm going to try clearing out all the app caches or reinstall my apps. This is so much slower than before, and it commonly freezes up for a few seconds...especially when switching apps.
Before, we could control our processor to save battery by reducing the number of cores used. That option is gone completely.
I see no noticeable upside to the lollipop update.

Before everyone trashes this update, someone should try a full factory reset... I've fixed many issues with previous updates by doing this, and with an update this big, I'd suspect it could help.

Latest suggestions on lag and freezes

I bought the phone from Sprint and used it for Sprint; then now Cricket. Sprint has terrible service here; I roamed for days sometimes traveling for work. I would swear the phone freezes and lags more when you are in that funk area of having no service or poor service.
Most of my freezes are when I'm driving; that's most of my phone use anyway. I've used app killers and memory boosters, and I keep reading that those actually do more harm.
I have an iphone for work and it never freezes; and my best android experience was with a Huawei Honor 8; it had no freeze to speak of.
Is it the phones hardware, how it plays with apps, or does it just need more ram, or are there bad/buggy apps? It's not uncommon for me to use Waze, Uber Driver, Glympse, and an app that either plays audio, or sometimes video like DirecTV. It will almost always freeze.
I've done resets and restores. Wonder if a fresh reset and reinstall of apps would have any good effect?

Do not use any app killers or memory booster. They do more harm then benefit.
If you are on Nougat, update to Oreo Beta 3. Or wait for a few days. Essential will be pushing 8.1 beta soon, hopefully within this week.

If you are on Nougat, update to Oreo Beta 3. Or wait for a few days. Essential will be pushing 8.1 beta soon, hopefully within this week.
I use Waze everyday, and have never had freezes. I'm running OB3.

Thanks for the suggestions,it just seems like beta builds, for someone who uses the phone to make money (where you need 100 reliability), are not the best choice.
I'm not saying Waze is an issue, that's just one of several apps that o have open during the problem times. When I do use the ram boosters they typically indicate they are finding almost 1 gb to free up.

FREE RAM is wasted RAM. As per feedback here and in other forums, Oreo Beta builds have been much more reliable than Nougat builds.
I never ran Nougat, so can't compare unfortunately. But OB2 and OB3 has been rock solid for me.

Hmm. Maybe I'll give it shot tonight. Can you go back to nougat if it doesn't do well. For that matter when will the production build of Oreo be out?

I would suggest you wait for a few days. Apparently Essential has fixed a lot of bugs in 8.1 beta. They did mention that the may release it within this week. If you don't feel comfortable on Beta, you can go back to Nougat, but you will loose your data.

@cfclay - Today, in order to help combat sluggishness and choppy scrolling, I turned on Force GPU rendering in developer options. It's helped in my opinion. That's usually a setting developers use when testing, but since this is more or less a test build, I figured I'd give it a shot. I also changed my transition animation settings to .5x from 1x. While that won't help smoothness, if you're getting laggy experience it may help speed some things up a bit for you. May be worth a shot and may just give the perception things have improved, but overall I've been very pleased with the performance of the oreo beta 3 release.
@indian84 - where is everyone getting this information that oreo 8.1 beta may come out on friday (I've seen that mentioned in several places) or in the next few days. The only thing I can find is where Essential just said they were skipping 8.0 to jump straight to 8.1. Can you point me to where timeframes have been mentioned? Thanks in advance.
Hey, I sideloaded Essential Phone Oreo Beta 3 (OPM1.170911.254 and I have a dumb question- how can you tell it applied. There were no errors on the computer, but I think there may have been something on the phone that said installation aborted, just barely noticed before I chose to reboot.

@cfclay - Easy, go to settings, system, about phone, and look at the build number.

Should have the build you were trying to flash if it was successful, like at the bottom of my screenshot.
So going back to your original issue. Sprint did cause the phone to lag and do weird things. That was a given. I was able to get out and use TMobile. the difference is night and day. I do want to point out that cricket caps it's lte speeds at 8mbits, this is from having cricket before and it would sometimes drop to 3 and 4 is more consistent. I'd check the snrs and the speed you're getting from cricket , in 2018 8mbit cap feels a little low

I'm on the unlimited 2 plan and getting 3 Mbps lol. Still, works beautifully compared to Sprint. I do see your point though. This is my first month to try this service, and I've used about 10gb a week and it works just fine, so I'm sticking to it.

Here's the error I get when trying to sideload the Beta Build 3. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Not to burst your bubble...
But effing with the GPU does not fix the issue... It's just your rose colored glasses...
Neither performance for the governor... Nor any setting in developer options will fix it...
Though if it works for you... Good...

Yeah, it hasn't fixed anything.
The lag and freezes has nothing to do with being on Sprint versus being on Cricket or any other carrier. I get the random freezes and lags too and it's really frustrating. The phone throttles and unthrottles itself at random times with no rhyme or reason. I'm all stock, not rooted, no beta software and the phone would stutter, lag, freeze while i'm doing something mundane. Also touchscreen issues at times.
I already have (had) my device setup the way i want, so not interested in starting all over just to try/test out beta software. I'll just wait for the official Oreo to drop.
Certain apps seem to really cause problems. I reset my phone and installed most of the apps again. When you connect carplay and use another GPS app like glympse, it can be a complete dumpster fire. Locked up on me twice today
