White balance on screen - Xperia Z3 Compact General

I know z3c screen is cold but, i noticed
Whites tends to have a slight magenta tonality. Is it common or it's a screen defect.

I don't have any monitor calibration tool but I have a factory calibrated Dell monitor. I used photoshop CS6 and created a png file with 11 shades of grey, from white to black in 10% differences, then I loaded a copy to the Z3C and tried to adjust its color balance to match the Dell monitor. After countless tries, I gave up. Something is really weird about the Z3C display - when I got certain shade right, other shades got tinted.
My guess is if one of Z3C RGB isn't true, there's not much you can do with white balance adjustment. That's what separates a high quality monitor from a cheap one. And the Z3C is definitely made with low quality IPS panel. Such disappointment for a very nice phone!
I wish I can send my Z3C to a lab just to prove Sony fanboys are full of it but I'm not gonna spend any more of my money for this piece of crap.

All I could read from your post was "I can't deal with a phone that cannot please my superior and master color expertise, I want my money back".
They are not promising a beautiful display, which in my opinion it is. They are promising us a great battery and power in a small package.
Yes, colors tend to be artificially beautiful, translating to fake quality and low color accuracy. It is not really noticeable by common users, but it can be annoying for some, I guess it is something we have to deal with.

Thank you i tried, it was a lot in magenta tone and adjusting it gave back a not brilliant white. I Sent back phone to the shop, newest one has cold white, but not a magenta tone, probably a defective panel.
Both older e newer are 48w14.

[Q]Whitelevels and screen sharpness

I have only seen 4 galaxy tab 7.7's so far and I noticed all 4 of them really have bad white levels as compared to my galaxy note, disabled the auto power saving and there is a difference in white levels but its still not even close to the galaxy note at the same brightness level. Even at brightness 25% on the note the vs 100% on the tab 7.7shows 'dimmer'whites. This is not a rant but I'm just asking if the screens are calibrated that way or should I keep looking?
Also I noticed that the mdine engine oon the tab provides oversharpening to a lot of my photos and its so obvious and makes the images look bd, supercurio has the same findings.
It is a pretty big screen so it may be they limited the brightnes to save battery power. While the claim is that OLED takes less power than LCD that is not always true. When displaying white, OLED tech uses like 4X as much power as LCD. The power saving comes in when displaying images with medium to darker colors.
What is the "mdine engine"? Is this something that can be bypassed by using a different picture viewing app?
It is amazing how Samsung seems to always add some crappy image "enhancement" like DnIE or such crap. Why can't they just leave our images alone, as we meant them to be? It is freakin' OLED man. You don't need any contrast or sharpness enhancement you knuckleheads! OLED by nature is sharp and has great contrast! Duh!
I don't know. My 7.7 is super bright, sharp and with way warmer colors than my Note.

I'm thinking the samr thing that samsung might ne limiting how bright the whites can go duebto the screen size but based on what I've seen on samoleds some screens juat put out better white levels, not really brighter but whiter.
For the mdine its running system wide.

The samoled plus tends to have more warmer colors than the samoled, is the whites on your tab 7.7 'whiter' than on the note at the same brightness level?

Yes I believe so, Supercurio knows more about that stuff.
EDIT:
simulated example done in photoshop, anyone with the tab7.7 and better photoshop skills feel free to redo this simulated image
Perhaps one of the other reason that the 7.7's screen isn't quite as bright, apart from the obvious power saving reasons, is an effort to possibly reduce the OLED degradation (burn-in) effect.
Either way, although I certainly noticed out of the box that my 7.7 wasn't as bright as my Note (or even my GS2 for that matter!), I was never really bothered by it because (especially when you use movie mode) the colour reproduction is very accurate, and paired up with the contrast levels, it's still fantastic!
I guess, to me, white doesn't necessarily mean I need to put on a pair of sunglasses while looking at my screen lol!
I just wanted to know if the norm has lower white levels, what bothers me more is added sharpening on some images.

Yellowish? Not at all! At least not with my unit anyway. Sure it makes the screen generally warmer in colour, but IMO, more than anything, it makes the colours look more accurate and natural.
Give it a try! You never know until you do...

Well ever since the Galaxy S changing the color mode to movie mode gives a yellowish cast, this is probably dependent on the calibration on the screen we get in the first place. I saw a friend's Tab7.7 the other day and his white levels were really brighter than my Galaxy Note. FWIW, its still a luck of the draw when it comes to color calibration on the screen. But thanks for that tip, when I'll purchase the Tab I'll make sure to also check out movie mode and see if it hits my requirements.

Very bright noticed the same with the Note ,
Nexus was somewhat easier on the eyes at night,
But probably like you I like a very dim screen at night.
When the brightness is turned all the way down on the 7.7,
is any banding or other issues seen like many report on the Note?
Blacks are black I'm sure but how are greys that are near black.
On the Nexus they were fine, but on the Notes I seen they could have been darker?

why cant we control the display colors?

why none of the android phones has it
even the cheapest tv has an option the control colors so a 700$ phone doesn't have?!
the screen look like **** on the z and in when i look at the same things with bravia they look great

Xperia Z display shows terrible black clipping with firmwares .253+
Sony tried to show us an illusion of better black levels after .253 update, but black levels are exactly the same as before .253. Terrible black clipping is now showing us an illusion of better black, but all they really did with new screen calibration is that all near black levels are completely black and there is no detail in black scenes. Everything is just black.

I think the colors are ok, but the screen technology is absolute [email protected]! You can easy see the backlit lighting through the screen edges, and that is in my opinion, the couse for poor viewing angles! The light makes white shade over the screen. Too bad, Xperia Ultra is obviously same technology, as we can see from the reviews! Shame on you Sony! These could been the really outstanding devices!

Mediocre - Subpar screen quality

My 32/3 Mi Max just arrived today, not too happy with the screen. It seemed so dull, some leaks on the edge. No competition between AMOLED screen and this. But the 7' LCD of 1920x1200 mediapad X2 is still a height better than this. Heck, even redmi note 2 is better. A little disappointed, glad I didn't go all out with 128/4 version.

Mine isn't that bad. Download Color Changer Pro from the Play Store. You can increase the saturation and colors in it. Mine almost looks as good as an AMOLED now minus the blacks.

The screen protector you have reduces screen quality especially black levels. 100% the cause. Most of the full cover glass for 2.5d screens does not actually adhere to the screen reducing contrast.
The screen quality is v.good although it uses software contrast boosting to make the colors nice, which can crush some details in colors.
Take off the screen prortector and show the same photo, you will see the big difference.
Btw what case do you have?

I've made some comparison photo from some of my available devices on hand. It's horrible, They're definitely cutting corners on the screen. Even my $60 Alcatel phone looks better. My Mi Pad, and Redmi Note 2 have the same "washed out tinting" issues, but this is definitely worse than that.
Just for a note:

Did you read what I said about your screen protector.
The screen is IPS, there will always be changes in brightness when viewing off axis. It's called IPS glow. Depending on the screen, you will see it more from different angles. Mi Max might look better at a different angle than the other phones.

Now you can see the contrast is increased and black levels are better.
This is why I hate phones with 2.5d screens. You can get these full cover protectors which reduce quality or normal glass protectors which don't cover the screen fully. There is also tpu screen protectors which will cover fully without reducing quality, but they feel a bit rubbery and are hard to apply.

All LCDs have that bleeds, glows or whatever you want to call it, I'm well aware of that. But, If you need to put your phone in an angle to get correct color reproduction, i think it defeats the purpose of "IPS" display in the first place.

IPS screens don't really have a purpose, it's just a screen type. Every type of screen has its flaw.
Amoled has image retention and must use pwm to reduce brightness. Some people notice the flicker/eye strain from it.
TN panel has inverted colors instead of ips glow. IPS still has better viewing angles and IPS glow is only noticeable at certain angles.
I have to agree that the full screen coloured screen protector is POS, just realised that it doesn't have any glue in the middle, making some gap between the screen and the protector. Gonna order some better one.
Besides the screen, it's a solid good phone I reckon. I get more than what I bargained for because it's really is an inexpensive phone.. too pampered by AMOLED I guess.

There is some full coverage protectors with glue in the middle, at least for other phones. Not sure if there is one for mi max but if there is, they are very rare.
It's fresh out of the box. Haven't really tried anything yet, but I'm on 8.0.1.0 apparently. I'm not sure about the battery life.. I'm more than happy to get 6.5hrs sot. My daily driver is iPhone SE, hands down its a beast of a phone, 9 hours on time give or take.
I just ordered Nillkin glass protector for my mi max, kind of expensive, but can't go wrong with that one. Please share with me if you found any good full screen glass protector.
The big draw of the Mi Max screen is the size, not the color accuracy or black levels or brightness. It's an average screen, not mediocre like a lot of cheap Chinese Android junk but not as good as an LCD on a flagship device. AMOLED is on a different planet because of the crazy saturation and inky blacks. I've had a few phones with AMOLED and although they're great for viewing photos and videos, they're not good for web surfing or working with documents because white draws more power. I didn't have any issues with burn in though.
1. The photo attached in the first post doesn't actually have the mi max in it. I suggest you remove it.
2. Second, the comparison album you made on imgur has software buttons and doesn't actually show that it's a Mi Max, while the separately attached photo in that same post has the xiaomi rom running. The separately attached photo clearly shows its the Mi Max and the display looks great to me with no issues.
My personal experience is also that the screen is great and I'm not sure where you're coming from...

In the first post, Mi Max is the middle phone. The user has installed a full coverage black glass screen protector which reduces the contrast as there is an airgap between it and the display.
I thought long and hard about wading into this thread, but after using the phone for a week I figured why the chuff not.
So, yeah, after 7 days use I've got to say I think the screen is pretty great! I haven't seen any hint blue tint I've read about in a few reviews, although, my device is much newer than the first batches and preproduction models, so that could explain it.
It's not as punchy as an AMOLED, but AMOLED colours are often way inaccurate. Which brings me to my next point, I find the screen pretty spot on in terms of colour accuracy (visually speaking at least, I've got no idea as to the reproduction of the panel on a spec level). It's definitely an improvement over my Meizu M1 Metal.
For the money, it's hard to fault this device. It's by no means perfect, but it's 1/5 the cost of a Samsung Galaxy Whatever.

It is a bit on the blue side but just a bit & you correct it with enabling reading mode & moving slider to the beginning position.
Did my own view test today by using MX player & putting it in to the 32 bit RGB display colour format and then I played a 10 bit Hevc movie. Well the display is quite good but nothing mind blowing. Luminance is an a down side required for something like HDR but it can pass presumably if you use it in controlled darker environment. Actually with brightness set to 11 out of 15 possible (which translate into 73.3%) its good enough but if you go over that contrast and with it quality begins to go down drastically, 12 (80%) is top & even that I would call a compromise. Don't be missed by this for a mobile phone LED display this one is perfectly fine, not a stellar one nor the best one out there but perfectly fine. The little more brighter displays won't make much of the difference between 450 & 550 nits their is little to non difference you will be able to see in this particular case regarding LCD's, next category should be a 700~1000 nits but mobile phones & only couple of them are stepping in lower margins of that category.
At the end I just can't not to wonder if the guy who did a calibration of the display had a little problem with its eye sight because you see as much a display is on a cold (blue) side & that is minimal a tad or two the photos (with main camera) are proportionally on the opposite warm (yellow) side.
Best regards.

I've just received my U11+ from HTC club (Italy) and I've the same exact problem.
The brightness is a bit low and the bottom part (1/4) of the display is yellowish.
Does this problem affect all units? If it's true, I'll go for a refund

Some units fine, some units barely noticeable and some units too much evident.
I hope that an update will fix the problem or maybe let us adjust the bottom color leds.
I was reading the posts(Google translated) and there are many people with the problem.

i have to say im really happy with my screen. No yellowish marks on the bottom, not pink tinge, not even that much back light bleed. I must be a lucky one or my eyes dont work properly!
Just got mine today, no issues so far. screen is good, i can notice slightly that the edges are a bit darker but it doesnt bother me.

Thanks for your report, my unit is barely noticeable but, once I've noticed, it is definitely here. If some units are totally not affected by this problem I'll try for an exchange

No problem at all here. U11 Is brighter. But the U11+ looks sharper and more realistic. That said. Blacks are very deep for a lcd display.

Just got my U11+ and noticed a slight yellow bottom 1/3 of the display. Have you managed to fix yours yet? Does it get better?

I had HTC One M8. It's display was perfect.
I asked for a replacement. The customer care guy said they haven't received any complaints regarding display so far. Mine's the first. I don't know if people don't notice it or if I got a bad one. I hope the replacement phone will have a better display since you can't return phones here in India; only replacements.

After a few days of tinkering I've realised my screen is also tinted reddish (with the bottom 1/3rd being the worst). On DCI-P3's coldest setting does it only almost not look too warm. But at lower brightness it's still way too warm. It almost looks like an instagram filter is permanently on. My M8 has much crisper whites and comparing the 2 phones with the same photos, the M8 always looks crisper and better
When viewing the screen from an angle from the left, the colours look almost how I'd want them. But viewing from other angles it just gets warmer.
Is it worth all the effort of exchanging it for a new one? Did your new one come out better?

Hey, I would agree with your observation to some extent, but I won't call it reddish. I got this a day ago and my previous phone was a 3 yr old Oneplus One. U11+ is certainly on the warmer side and I have kept it at 50% beyond the middle for DCI-P3. But I don't find any particular difference viewing from left or right. It certainly has a softness which I can't really comprehend, is it the higher resolution from my OPO or the warmer tone, no clue. You may try exchanging if possible and see if it helps since you said your bottom 1/3rd is particularly showing difference.

I did notice it was a bit softer than my M8. Which is strange since it has a much higher resolution and DPI.
But I ended up returning it. The yellow discolouration wasn't working for me. Hoping to get a new one soon though. I miss my U11+ a lot - especially the camera and Edge Sense...

Yes better to do that than live with a doubt in mind. Hope you get a good device.
I love this phone, even in this aspect! The only cons i spotted is no recent updates and no system equalizer at all.Viper got me covered perfectly! But yes,i love its vibrant colors!

I forgot to reply to this, but I eventually got a new U11+ and it's screen is great! No issues so far (except for direct sunlight visibility once in a while). I'm very happy with the phone

Clarity/resolution

The Xiaomi Mi 9 SE has a crazy crisp display. Just kidding, this is automated text so who knows if this screen is any good. So, you be the judge! A higher rating indicates that it's extremely sharp and clear, and that you cannot see pixels with your naked eye.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
This is the first time I use a phone that has Amoled screen. I heard about color shifting which happens to Amoled screen but I still curious. Does color shifting happen to your devices ?
For mine, when I tilt the phone, even a little bit, I see the blocks of color turn from blue (cool) to pink (warm) and backward. This only happens on white background. If the view angle is 90 degree, its fine. But if it greater or smaller than that, about 60 degree, it's just like a rainbow is moving. Kind of annoying

Please post some pictures of the display at different viewing angles.
Ive been using OLED screens for the last couple of years, mostly from Samsung, as is the one on the Mi 9 SE. They have never had any issue of the sort. I have however seen such a thing on the panels used in Blackberry phones.
The SE seems like the only device out this year that ticks my boxes as far as size and display quality, i would dearly like to know if sammy is delivering sub par screens here.
I have to say i am skeptical, so some proof would be appreciated.

Interesting. I've never used a phone with an amoled screen, but sounds like this would put me off.
Not sure if any stores here in the UK have the mi9se that I could try out before purchasing.
Pocophone I've just bought is lovely, but just a little too big for me coming from a mi6,which is why I'm considering the mi9 se.
No headphone socket though.!

Lets see if its actually true first. Here is a very detailed review that includes many angles on the display, none show any color shifting:

That review also has some interesting info about the notification handling and the state of the currently available ROMs.

Sorry about vid quality, I recorded it by RMN 3
You can see the color turn into warm and cool blocks when I change view angle vertically

it's hard to see much wrong with that.
are you looking too hard for problems...?

Honestly I'm not seeing a big problem there... But the resolution isn't great. Someone below said the A50 display at the store was better but it too has an original Sammy screen, also manufactures in Vietnam.
Mb a good quality photo?
Also, what about the issue with the notifications? Ant solution for it other than AOD?

1 month used and I think I get use to it. Maybe after I checked Mi 8, it also has the same issue. So I guess this is actually not an issue anymore
I also hope for solution replacing notification light. Heard alot about "the dot" but after many attemps with many apps, the choosen one is still missing I guess.
I have a Pixel 3. The Mi 9 SE, despite technically having a lower PPI value, is noticeably sharper. I imagine this is because it's not using the Pentile layout that the Pixel 3 screen has.
