I've been playing with Nexus 6 Android 5.1 since last 4 days now and here are my Impressions, changelog
Under the Hood Improvements in 5.1 based on all commits Google made:
50+ commits (changes) to fix memory leaks,
Over 76 commits (changes) that fix performance
Kernel CPU thread management Improvements
Better performance for Qualcomm 8xx CPUs:
Better performance for encrypted devices
No Wifi drain: Solved across all devices.
Wakelocks fixed
1000+ other minor fixes.
New Features:
HD Voice calling, New Bluetooth, Wifi shortcuts, Stolen Device Protection, Dual-SIM support, Ringer modes (Priority) improved, (Hidden) Google VPN
My Impressions
My Nexus 6 feels at least 30% faster on stock encrypted and nearly 20% faster unencrypted. The real benefits are apparent on nearly everything you do. Multitasking is now what it should’ve been. No reboots, no crashes so far.
On Android 5.0, I used to have nearly 50% RAM free (1.5 GB) at all times. Now its like 1.1 GB used and 1.9GB free (with standard apps running).
Battery life has been slightly better too.

Silent mode is the priority option now. Just put it to none and you have silent mode. Plus its even better than silent mode because you can choose how long you want it to be silent till it goes back to sound notifications just in case your someone who always forgets to turn sound back on.

Not rooted...fully stock just got the handset and upgraded to MM plus the advertising blurb from Honor clearly states Doze is functional for the 5X with EMUI 4.0!
Yikes. This is interesting. OP could you perform an experiment for us? Download this app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gsamlabs.bbm). It will track how long your device has entered into Doze mode. Let's see if the Check Doze app is telling us the truth!
EDIT: So this guy (see link below) seems to believe if the flag is enabled the Device will enter Doze mode after 30 minutes of not being used. It's not so clear what not being used means, but most likely is that the screen has not been turned on and no audio is playing, etc.

I wondered too what criteria the app creator uses to establish full doze functionality...he mentions significant motion sensor.
Beyond my inderstanding really...I do know though that my 2 year old LG G Pad passes the app doze test and is extremely battery frugal whilst this just released handset doesn't!
I've just bought the handset from Amazon coming from a Wileyfox Swift...don't know if I'm making too much of it and whether its a deal breaker.
Sort of put out by Honor's advert touting the 5X's Doze capability when it appears the handset falls short.
I guess more qualified individuals will look into it more deeply?
Sigh,
Doze is included in Android 6.0 I won't get into the details of it. It's there on every 6.0 build that I'm aware of buried deep inside the system.
You will not see any benefit from doze until your phone is actually idle. Not just 5 minutes laying on the counter idle. But leave the phone alone for a while idle.
Hope this is helpful
For me, it's not relevant. Battery life is better since the Honor Marshmellow upgrade. And my phone uses 1% of battery the whole night, when it is in flight mode. Thats good, and much better than with Android 5, where it used about 7% during the night.

I'm sorry but you make it sound like the only prerequisite for doze is MM but if sensor support is inadequate doze won't function which seems to be the case with the 5X!

Here this should help you with your outrage. Doze is neither enabled or disabled in marshmallow. It just is.
http://m.androidcentral.com/inside-marshmallow-what-doze-how-do-i-use-it-and-what-does-it-do
To correctly support doze, a device must have a significant motion sensor. AFAIK, our device doesn't and therefore the app is correct that it should not support doze. This is Google's requirement:
https://source.android.com/devices/tech/power/mgmt.html#doze
My assumption is that Huawei is ignoring Google's specification of what is required to support Doze (I wonder if Google will add a test to their CTS to stop vendors from being able to ignore that requirement) and just enabling it anyway.
Doze needs the significant motion sensor to work properly to exit doze when you pick up the phone. Without that, you will likely not get notifications in a timely manner until you actually turn the screen on again. But that's just a guess without knowing if Huawei changed anything in how Doze is supposed to work.

Sorry once again but you seem to be ignoring the crucial requirement of significant sensor support which the 5X lacks...no outrage my friend though maybe a little indignation brought on by Honor's trumpeting of the Doze capability of the handset.

Doze mode is different in that the entire device is taking a nap, not just the least-recently used apps (such is the case with App Standby). Doze mode is activated when the device is not plugged in, when the screen is locked, and when no motion has been detected for some time.
Just having screen rotation isn't sufficient I'm afraid the bottom line is the handset doesn't support doze.... anyhow enough. I've gone back to the swift anyway... Better size for me and if anything better performance.

Hence doze is activate on the phone. Some people just don't listen.
This phone sleeps just fine. Talk to the people with the snapdragon s7 and s7 edge. See how great doze is working for them

As a follow up I used the app on several of my devices including the honor 5x all come back as doze supported given I'm testing a kernel for our device right now the kernel should not effect doze
Can anyone who has downloaded the update comment on the improvements?
Also, is the camera any better (especially in low light)?
I've only used it for a little while but seems almost the same to me, just different notifications... Maybe things load faster?
On my end, it was horrendously slow, looked the same and camera lagged. Went back to LOS.
Collective Dolby Atmos Port Thread OP checking in. Any noticeable changes to Dolby Atmos for this device?
Inc Axon 7 Atmos Update if so.
Stock music player randomly stops. Flashlight from pull down bar doesn't always work. Dolby kills the battery faster than on MM. No problems with the camera so far. My Voice has some issues still.
My thoughts on the update so far:
1) Camera is MUCH improved. Focuses much faster and more accurately in low light (which was awful before). Much better low light pix.
2) Notifications are different. I don't like them (yet). Seem harder to read.
3) Tapping the fingerprint sensor to load up camera doesn't work
4) A fee misc bugs here and there but overall speedy and much faster
5) Can't tell battery life yet as its been less than 24 hrs.
6) Signal ? seems stronger
7) Everything else seems the same.

I can only compare LOS 14.1 to Marshmallow but the focus is MUCH improved on LOS 14.1 Nougat. Low light shots are pretty freaking great on LOS 14.1. I don't know a lot of what is going on but all I can say is that it seems much improved on LOS. Maybe UDev included some proprietary camera stuff in LOS?
EDIT: I've only been on LOS for one day and have taken all of 12 or so shots so definitely not a for sure thing. Just giving you my 2 cents.

No noticeable changes to Dolby Atmos, but the over-all sound seems slightly louder...But it may just be a placebo since there's other new stuff.
But as far as actual sound, it's all the same.
---------- Post added at 03:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:50 PM ----------
As for Nougat vs Marshmallow....
It's mostly "cosmetic" up to this point IMO.
I like the notifications a little better.
I haven't messed with the camera much (none in low light, yet)
Battery will take a few days to level out, so it's hard to tell yet on that
For the most part, it does feel about the same - but maybe a little smoother, but that may be some of the animation tweaks (like swiping away notifications).
Notifications expand a little different, I like that.
Double tap to wake seems to fade in, rather than instantly turn on the screen.
Over-all system seems louder... I've had to turn down my keyboard "sounds" on the apps I switch between (depending on the day)
I *still* wish there was a dark theme
Gonna update now, and then do a factory reset and start fresh with the phone. Did they update the music app? Can i finally play music in album order and not alphabetical? I really hope GPS speed is improved as well
Dolby EQ still won't let you customize the EQ and the sound is definitely louder, i only have to use 50% volume now with my ath-50 now before I'd have to use 80-90%.
With Dolby turned off the sound profile is the same but with Dolby enabled it's sounding different to me especially on YT, idk if i like it yet.

You can customize the EQ.... Open the Dolby Atmos app, choose the profile you want to change (Movie, Music, Game, Voice, ect...), click on it again and it will take you to the next screen where you can adjust the EQ (5 band EQ) and turn on or off: Volume Leveler, Dialogue Enhancer, Surround Virtualizer, ect.. .You also have 4 preset EQ's to pick from. Once you set it, you just back out and it saves it. It's always been this way.

Still MiFavor.... But, with some subtle changes. For the most part, it's still the same... The settings is now JUST the normal Android settings menu, not the "quick list" that nobody used (ok, I didn't use). But with Nova Launcher, it's pretty stock looking... Just the pull-down notification hasn't changed any.
Hi guys, so I pre-order the S8 and am very happy with the design of the phone but performance has left much to be desired. It just doesn't feel as snappy as lets say my OP3. Granted, OP3 has 6gb of ram but still, the S8 considerably feels sluggish. Chrome browser stutters all the time, even with only a few tabs open for example.
I have tried decreasing the animation/transition speed under devl options (which I know is subjective) but still the same...
Anyone else in the same boat? Anything to remedy this? I am really hoping for Root to be available.
I guess I'm just venting a little lol.
Yeah, I have the exynos version and it feels slow... Making all the animations 0.5x kinda helps but I'm still disappointed.
Let the phone get "broken in". Use it for a few days, things get a lot snappier after the system learns your usage patterns. I'm also getting better and better battery life (first day I barely had 1.5hrs SOT with my regular usage, a week later I was getting 4-5hrs easily, even though my usage pattern did not change).
However wiping the phone will reset this. I experienced this a few times in the past 3 weeks I had the phone.
Totally incorrect, this is the fastest smoothest Android I've ever used. I've been in the iPhone camp since the 6s and had the 7 as well. We all know how fast and smooth the new iPhones are, well this phone is as fast and smooth. I've had it running 7 days straight while opening and running dozens of apps, this is a beast. No lag and smooth af scrolling and navigation. Snapdragon here
To sum it up, this device is a pleasure to use. And no fkin way will I use a stock Android. The Galaxy user experience adds so much added value to the phone.

Me too and I've had three. A AT&T S-835 version and two UK Exynos versions. One of the Exynos had a pink screen and got returned. In the context of this thread I'm assuming "fast" means page opens, scrolling, and transitions. All three of my phones performed impressively in those areas. To the point as a long time Android user it makes you go "wow."
There are a bunch of threads here where people are complaining about a variety of performance issues. 99% of the time those problems are user induced. We all love Android's flexibility but it means no two phones are alike. Based on age, quality, and design of the apps people use one or two "bad" apps can create issues across your phone. Then there's the "freezing" crowd who take out an app that another app that's still alive is dependent on and they have issues. Look at the Bixby remapper and the performance problems it created. One thing I've noticed on my Exynos phones is that the Samsung Device Maintenance app does a terrific job of proactively managing power hungry apps and those that remain alive unnecessarily in the background.
As for 4GB vs. 6GB of RAM that doesn't really fly unless you always and intentionally keep a slew of apps running in the background. Every time I've checked I've had plenty of free RAM available and no app I've gone back to in recent apps hasn't been alive when I've needed it. If there's a single app that itself needs more than 4GB of RAM than it's a developer fail because the average Android phone has far less than 4GB of installed RAM.

New firmware update released today/yesterday.
Bluetooth and app installs are the two things that show performance issues best. When I connected to my truck's Bluetooth, every phone before it took around 20 seconds to connect, but the S8 connected immediately.
App installs are also seemingly immediate as well. I never get any lag or stuttering when installing apps, even while playing games.
That's my benchmark for how fast a phone is. Oh, and cold booting is 30 seconds, S7e on U FW is 38 seconds.
Yeah definetly noticed this too. I still blame Samsung's touchwiz. The S8 took a huge hit last night when I tried video calling on Whatsapp and send a few texts and the same time and damn the phone heated up and lagged hard on me. Hoping the update containing daydream will fix a few of these issues and give us that damn button remapping back.
Smart switch restore and the shortcutter app made my phone sluggish. Factory reset and avoid both made my phone silky smooth with over 100 apps installed.

On a serious note, if you don't mind running beta software, try Beta 3. It's much better with memory management and multi tasking.

Well, OnePlus will never accept that their memory management is shyte and they have improved it. People all over the internet are complaining about it.
My guess is they have changed something in B3 that improves RAM management or killing apps in the background..
I was always told since I use Android phones (almost 10 years now) do NOT use app killers to save battery, Android is smart enough to take care of that process. App killers do more harm then good. And this is exactly what OnePlus is doing in their OS, I really don't understand that.
I am really considering using an alternative ROM because Oxygen OS sucks big time with regards to their battery management.
I have no issues like this at all. Multitasking works better than any other phone I've had.
Do you have 8 or 6GB ram? I have 6 and I have the same issues.
And to be honest; I had the OP5, OP5T and OP6 all with 8GB and never had any issue.

I'm not seeing anything remotely similar to what you show in your video. Tried multitasking between Messages, Facebook, Firefox, YouTube. Not seen reloading once. The only app in the test where I had Adaptive Battery disabled was Messages.
I'm on stock, no custom nothing... don't know how to help, I'm sorry.
I have the 6 GB version and I'm facing the same issue.
Sometimes, if I leave a game to answer a text for example, the game immediately reloads.
My phone can't keep Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, Tapatalk, Chrome (1 or 2 tabs) all at the same time. Most of the times they reload.

I've been reading some news today saying that Digital Wellbeing might be affecting Pixel devices performance. Some users disabled Digital Wellbeing usage access and the devices started working very smoothly.
Of course I've tried it on my Mi A2 and it does seem more fluid and snappier. Any comments about it?
I used to always experience crashes on pie. After switching it off, no crashes since 5 days and the phone very smooth.
Don't know if it's placebo, but I feel it smoother too after disabling digital wellbeing.
How can i disable this feature?

You should go to Settings - Digital well-being - Disable access to usage statistics (tap on the upper right corner).

Thank you, man, for posting about this little hack. Seems like it really slightly boosts performance.
It also seems to improve performance on my 64 GB Mi A2. If someone still needs similar functionality, tracking time spent on apps, the Microsoft Launcher added this a while back. It's a pretty great launcher and it's totally free:

Ya, I also heard about the news and I disable the digital well-being in my mi a2. Surprisingly the performance is increased and the battery stand out 2 hour more with only disabling one app. I only turn off all features of digital well-being.

Yes, I can definitely confirm that apps open faster, animations are smoother, keyboard seems more responsive, and battery seems to last longer.
Placebo? I don't know, but I really don't care about Digital Wellbeing. I don't think it's the right approach for helping with addiction to apps
By the way this doesn't fix at all the emmc bug, or any other existing bugs.
Same here! Disabling digital well-being improved performance.
I'm off and there is no change

Same here, apps starting faster, Ui more fluid, overall the performance feels better
Thank you! It drastically improved the perfomance and the phone doesn't lag anymore. However, the slow memory write and clear speed is still there.
I've disabled this feature since 2 months now and it clearly improves performance
Yessss, a lot my friend, you will notice a better battery performance. When I had enable the digital wellbeing my phone only gave me maximum 5 hours on screen time with 10% remaining. Now with the DW disabled I get around 6-6:30 hours of battery !
