Disabling Digital Wellbeing Usage access improves performance? - Xiaomi Mi A2 / 6X Guides, News, & Discussion

I've been reading some news today saying that Digital Wellbeing might be affecting Pixel devices performance. Some users disabled Digital Wellbeing usage access and the devices started working very smoothly.
Of course I've tried it on my Mi A2 and it does seem more fluid and snappier. Any comments about it?

I used to always experience crashes on pie. After switching it off, no crashes since 5 days and the phone very smooth.

Don't know if it's placebo, but I feel it smoother too after disabling digital wellbeing.

How can i disable this feature?

You should go to Settings - Digital well-being - Disable access to usage statistics (tap on the upper right corner).

Thank you, man, for posting about this little hack. Seems like it really slightly boosts performance.

It also seems to improve performance on my 64 GB Mi A2. If someone still needs similar functionality, tracking time spent on apps, the Microsoft Launcher added this a while back. It's a pretty great launcher and it's totally free:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.launcher

Ya, I also heard about the news and I disable the digital well-being in my mi a2. Surprisingly the performance is increased and the battery stand out 2 hour more with only disabling one app. I only turn off all features of digital well-being.

Yes, I can definitely confirm that apps open faster, animations are smoother, keyboard seems more responsive, and battery seems to last longer.
Placebo? I don't know, but I really don't care about Digital Wellbeing. I don't think it's the right approach for helping with addiction to apps

By the way this doesn't fix at all the emmc bug, or any other existing bugs.

Same here! Disabling digital well-being improved performance.

I'm off and there is no change

Same here, apps starting faster, Ui more fluid, overall the performance feels better

Thank you! It drastically improved the perfomance and the phone doesn't lag anymore. However, the slow memory write and clear speed is still there.

I've disabled this feature since 2 months now and it clearly improves performance

Yessss, a lot my friend, you will notice a better battery performance. When I had enable the digital wellbeing my phone only gave me maximum 5 hours on screen time with 10% remaining. Now with the DW disabled I get around 6-6:30 hours of battery !

Android 5.1 My Impressions and Changelog

I've been playing with Nexus 6 Android 5.1 since last 4 days now and here are my Impressions, changelog
Under the Hood Improvements in 5.1 based on all commits Google made:
50+ commits (changes) to fix memory leaks,
Over 76 commits (changes) that fix performance
Kernel CPU thread management Improvements
Better performance for Qualcomm 8xx CPUs:
Better performance for encrypted devices
No Wifi drain: Solved across all devices.
Wakelocks fixed
1000+ other minor fixes.
New Features:
HD Voice calling, New Bluetooth, Wifi shortcuts, Stolen Device Protection, Dual-SIM support, Ringer modes (Priority) improved, (Hidden) Google VPN
My Impressions
My Nexus 6 feels at least 30% faster on stock encrypted and nearly 20% faster unencrypted. The real benefits are apparent on nearly everything you do. Multitasking is now what it should’ve been. No reboots, no crashes so far.
On Android 5.0, I used to have nearly 50% RAM free (1.5 GB) at all times. Now its like 1.1 GB used and 1.9GB free (with standard apps running).
Battery life has been slightly better too.

Silent mode is the priority option now. Just put it to none and you have silent mode. Plus its even better than silent mode because you can choose how long you want it to be silent till it goes back to sound notifications just in case your someone who always forgets to turn sound back on.

Yeah I notice it in play store, more than on other phones and I tested side by side...I think emui favors battery life for general usage over high performance (even in performance mode)

I think he is referring to normal power plan rather than Smart and Ultra.
I noticed the EMUI 5 beta has helped in this. Before, Google Plus was horrible but now it's pretty smooth. I've enjoyed using my phone a lot more.

Google plus is smooth !! Then it is having great performance.
As a habitual thing, I won't open it because of its slowness. I would hide it anywhere so that I wont open it even accidentally.
I enabled performance mode in battery options and I noticed it's much smoother. Google now would have e micro stutters and now it's as smooth as silk
Yea it's not as smooth as my Nexus 5x, but the battery life is nearly 100% more. So in my opinion worth the sacrifice.

Axon 7 improvements on Nougat?

Can anyone who has downloaded the update comment on the improvements?
Also, is the camera any better (especially in low light)?
I've only used it for a little while but seems almost the same to me, just different notifications... Maybe things load faster?
On my end, it was horrendously slow, looked the same and camera lagged. Went back to LOS.
Collective Dolby Atmos Port Thread OP checking in. Any noticeable changes to Dolby Atmos for this device?
Inc Axon 7 Atmos Update if so.
Stock music player randomly stops. Flashlight from pull down bar doesn't always work. Dolby kills the battery faster than on MM. No problems with the camera so far. My Voice has some issues still.
My thoughts on the update so far:
1) Camera is MUCH improved. Focuses much faster and more accurately in low light (which was awful before). Much better low light pix.
2) Notifications are different. I don't like them (yet). Seem harder to read.
3) Tapping the fingerprint sensor to load up camera doesn't work
4) A fee misc bugs here and there but overall speedy and much faster
5) Can't tell battery life yet as its been less than 24 hrs.
6) Signal ? seems stronger
7) Everything else seems the same.

i recon with the next update the software experience when combined with a custom kernel & some xposed mods is gonna be absolutely boss. buying this phone once i see how good the camera with nougat so please can someone post daylight shots and low light shots
Should I uninstall Hiya before this update?

I can only compare LOS 14.1 to Marshmallow but the focus is MUCH improved on LOS 14.1 Nougat. Low light shots are pretty freaking great on LOS 14.1. I don't know a lot of what is going on but all I can say is that it seems much improved on LOS. Maybe UDev included some proprietary camera stuff in LOS?
EDIT: I've only been on LOS for one day and have taken all of 12 or so shots so definitely not a for sure thing. Just giving you my 2 cents.

No noticeable changes to Dolby Atmos, but the over-all sound seems slightly louder...But it may just be a placebo since there's other new stuff.
But as far as actual sound, it's all the same.
---------- Post added at 03:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:50 PM ----------
As for Nougat vs Marshmallow....
It's mostly "cosmetic" up to this point IMO.
I like the notifications a little better.
I haven't messed with the camera much (none in low light, yet)
Battery will take a few days to level out, so it's hard to tell yet on that
For the most part, it does feel about the same - but maybe a little smoother, but that may be some of the animation tweaks (like swiping away notifications).
Notifications expand a little different, I like that.
Double tap to wake seems to fade in, rather than instantly turn on the screen.
Over-all system seems louder... I've had to turn down my keyboard "sounds" on the apps I switch between (depending on the day)
I *still* wish there was a dark theme
Gonna update now, and then do a factory reset and start fresh with the phone. Did they update the music app? Can i finally play music in album order and not alphabetical? I really hope GPS speed is improved as well
Dolby EQ still won't let you customize the EQ and the sound is definitely louder, i only have to use 50% volume now with my ath-50 now before I'd have to use 80-90%.
With Dolby turned off the sound profile is the same but with Dolby enabled it's sounding different to me especially on YT, idk if i like it yet.

You can customize the EQ.... Open the Dolby Atmos app, choose the profile you want to change (Movie, Music, Game, Voice, ect...), click on it again and it will take you to the next screen where you can adjust the EQ (5 band EQ) and turn on or off: Volume Leveler, Dialogue Enhancer, Surround Virtualizer, ect.. .You also have 4 preset EQ's to pick from. Once you set it, you just back out and it saves it. It's always been this way.

Still MiFavor.... But, with some subtle changes. For the most part, it's still the same... The settings is now JUST the normal Android settings menu, not the "quick list" that nobody used (ok, I didn't use). But with Nova Launcher, it's pretty stock looking... Just the pull-down notification hasn't changed any.

Multitasking/RAM

You're busy and don't have time to wait, which is why you need to stop reading this thread and get back to organizing your Pogs. Rate this thread to express how the performs when multitasking. A higher rating indicates that the keeps many apps in memory so that they don't need to reload, and that when moving between apps, transitions are smooth and performance is excellent.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I don't know if it's app specific, but when playing a chinese game, Dengeki Bunko: Crossing Void, it's extremely unoptimised and laggy, it's just as if my RAM is at around 400mb spare. Extremely laggy.
Other than that, after only using it for half a day, my device is using around 4.4 GB of ram out of 6GB of RAM when IDLE.
RAM Optimisations need to happen in updates very soon. Again,
A little disappointed with the RAM management.
Anybody else?

ugh, this post is so annoying. right. ram management on android... the more you use, the better your phone is. 4.4gb out of 6gb is not bad. if you have the 8gb oneplus 6, it uses around 5.5gb idle. when you have more ram, you can use more of it. no point having 6gb of ram and only having 2gb at idle

These kind of comments... smh
Lack of RAM is not going to make your game laggy. Your game lacks optimization. Idle RAM = WASTED RAM. These ratings are pointless if idiotic comments like these are counted.
So I see that the ram management is quite aggressive. Today I switched from chrome to inbox to copy something. And chrome restarted the page and I had to start the form over again. Only clearing opened apps asked me to user it without reading the tab.
As gestures are a bit but I am trying XDA gestures and an early access FluiDN.G. which with fine for a few hours then close and disable the accessibility settings for each app. I have disabled auto power management of both applications and allow them to run in all situations. While this works for longer when opening the camera (worst offender) it shuts down the gesture apps and resets the accessibility settings
Other then that things have been as snappy as the one plus 6.

There's something with emui and accessibility settings. From my experience, on olther devices, I had to reapply the accessibility settings a few times until it stuck. It's a battle of wills between the phone and yourself.
As for gestures, I think I'm gonna go with the setup on my current device: oneplus gestures and edge gestures. Those two apps are so amazing when it comes to customizing your gestures. Just hope on android 9 I can still disable the nav keys. Although I have a feeling the phone's gonna be a pain to use without nav key, especially while typing.

Same it's stabilized a little bit. Not sure what the AI power management is doing but maybe it's noticing trends after some use. Still using the camera from time to time makes both XDA gestures and the other nav app stop working

So far none. It just started happening a few hours ago. When the system goes under stress - taking phonecall then trying to message people across 2 different apps and signal changing from WiFi and authenticating VPN then proof - my gesture app gets killed (been fine all day and exempt from all power optimisation) and Spotify gets killed even if it was the last app like instantly.
I'll see if I can dig deeper this weekend. Literally a little polish on the software would make this the best phone I've ever used. Right now it's the worst.
I have a Huawei m5 8 inch tablet with 4gb ram and it manages memory fine. Never had to tweak battery optimisations in the 9 months I've had it.
I hope they fix it before my 30 day cool off. Or this will be the second Huawei I return. The Nexus 6p was stellar (I know Google did the software end to end)
If I can get some advice access to some logs I can maybe find when and where they are killing the apps - maybe there's a memory leak. With 6gb ram I would have though you leave at least 1gb guaranteed to the last 4-5 recent app.
UPDATE: just a thought it might be the smart resolution causing apps to redraw. I've switched off smart resolution now. And switched on 720p fixed. Will test it over next day or so
UPDATE 2: After setting to fixed 720p signs are positive... Now I can go back 20 apps on the recents screen and they all do not redraw or reload. I think there may be a bug in the smart resolution. It's been 30 minutes and I just reopened an app that was open last in recently 30 mins ago. Try this and see if it works too.

Can you please let me know if OnePlus Gestures and Edge Gestures apps work fluidly in the mate 20 pro? Sorry. After all the issues and head aches the Mate was giving people, I cancelled my preorder and went and bought the Note 9. Best decision I ever made (when it comes to phone purchases that is). So I won't be able to help you out.
But those two apps worked flawlessly on the LG G7 and now I only installed Edge Gestures on the Note 9 and it works without a hiccup.
Anyway, I think those apps have free versions, no?

I couldn't find free versions but I ended up purchasing them and they work good on my Note 9 but haven't tried them in the Mate 20 Pro. I'm actually switching from Note 9 to Mate 20 Pro but I'd say the best gesture app for Samsung phones is One Hand Operation+, you have to download goodlock first from galaxy store, then it'll let you install one hand operation+, I'd suggest you try it if you have a chance
Not using smart resolution and locking the resolution to 1080 solved 80% of my ram problems... Haha as in you dont see the app rendering when switching between. I guess its a bug with different apps different resolutions therefore re-rendering upon switching... Suggest you guys try it...

Thanks for this suggestion... Works like a charm now without smart resolution..

Yeah been half a day and no app crashes minimal reloading of apps. I'm at home today so battery drain is less anyways. I also turned off automatically manage all apps. That seems to contribute to aggressive killing.
What resolution you at? I'm trying 720p it still looks nice and crisp just can't play 1080 videos. Might switch back up to 1080 or QHD and see the battery difference.

Ram has taken a turn for the worst today. It's closing Spotify! While playing music. Can't even switch to the last recent app. I'm a power user and developer so I know how to tweak the settings how is a regular user supposed to use this

No issue here. Used it for 8+ hours straight. I have it all set to manage manually. Spotify can't autolaunch but allowed to remain in background

I have been using WQHD+ since I got the device and battery life has been outstanding.
Thanks for the suggestion around Manual Management of apps, it has improved multitasking a lot.

Poco M3 very slow?

Hi guys, I just bought the Poco M3 and I find it very slow, not only on opening apps but also things like opening recent apps menu, popping up keyboard, etc. Anybody else is experiencing this? The specs are pretty decent so I guess it's a badly optimized OS. I've used MIUI before and I liked it so I'm kinda disappointed.
I should receive mine later today, I will come back here after some tests and tell you.
Awesome! Waiting for your input.
I've been playing with it for about an hour now, didn't install many apps though (just a few basic ones).
It does have some lags like you said (drawer, keyboard, opening apps...), but I find it alright for that price point.
Yeah, the CPU should handle that a bit better, but MIUI 12 isn't really known to be a light Android skin. I don't think they made much optimization for the M3, it's probably the same as the more powerful POCOs.
Overall it's fine imo, but I agree it should be better for the hardware inside.
As a small update, I might add that after using it for a bit longer some of the lag went away, but it's still quite slow to open apps and do multi-tasking.

Thanks for your reply! I know the phone is super cheap and I shouldn't expect too much from it, but I've used MIUI before on even worse hardware and it was pretty smooth, so I was surprised by the lag. Nice phone otherwise(except camera which is pretty bad IMO). I didn't use it too much since it's not my main phone, but I'm going to use it more maybe it will get better. I'm also doing a hard reset. I hope it will get LineageOS soon, that would be awesome.
Yeah I see your point. I'm a Poco F2 Pro & X3 NFC user, so I also find the phone quite laggy, but it is acceptable in my opinion. But I do hope they will make some updates to improve performances, even just a bit.
(I recommend checking out the GCam thread I made for the camera, it gave me quite some decent results)

Nice!! I was just thinking about GCam and hoping that it would be available for this device. I will check your thread.
Just one question: have you tried to disable MIUI Optimizations in the developer options? I've seen users of other Xiaomi devices saying that it can improve the performance of the device, whether it's true or how much it improves, I don't know

I tried it and I think it's work.

That could explain the part where I said performance improved after using it for a while. I actually switched off MIUI Optimization in this part.

Done that, still slow. Will probably return the phone.
You need to wait for some time it'll get better
Just got an update this morning (12.0.5 EU) that improved performance

Any updates how is it working now?
Mine works perfect for the price.
Out of the box the phone does not feel snappy.
I've debloated the phone, removed 60 packages.
The phone feels snappy now after removing Google Assistant.
Change Poco launcher for Lawnchair, probably you will feel the diference.

this EU update has brought any changes to performance or not?

Hmm, I'd say with this update (as well as replacing the Poco launcher with Lawnchair), I did notice some performance improvement, yeah.
I wouldn't say by a lot, games still have the same amount of lag, but scrolling and opening apps definitely feel smoother and perfectly acceptable now imo.
