Poco M3 very slow? - POCO M3 Questions & Answers

Hi guys, I just bought the Poco M3 and I find it very slow, not only on opening apps but also things like opening recent apps menu, popping up keyboard, etc. Anybody else is experiencing this? The specs are pretty decent so I guess it's a badly optimized OS. I've used MIUI before and I liked it so I'm kinda disappointed.

I should receive mine later today, I will come back here after some tests and tell you.

Awesome! Waiting for your input.

I've been playing with it for about an hour now, didn't install many apps though (just a few basic ones).
It does have some lags like you said (drawer, keyboard, opening apps...), but I find it alright for that price point.
Yeah, the CPU should handle that a bit better, but MIUI 12 isn't really known to be a light Android skin. I don't think they made much optimization for the M3, it's probably the same as the more powerful POCOs.
Overall it's fine imo, but I agree it should be better for the hardware inside.

As a small update, I might add that after using it for a bit longer some of the lag went away, but it's still quite slow to open apps and do multi-tasking.

Thanks for your reply! I know the phone is super cheap and I shouldn't expect too much from it, but I've used MIUI before on even worse hardware and it was pretty smooth, so I was surprised by the lag. Nice phone otherwise(except camera which is pretty bad IMO). I didn't use it too much since it's not my main phone, but I'm going to use it more maybe it will get better. I'm also doing a hard reset. I hope it will get LineageOS soon, that would be awesome.

Yeah I see your point. I'm a Poco F2 Pro & X3 NFC user, so I also find the phone quite laggy, but it is acceptable in my opinion. But I do hope they will make some updates to improve performances, even just a bit.
(I recommend checking out the GCam thread I made for the camera, it gave me quite some decent results)

Nice!! I was just thinking about GCam and hoping that it would be available for this device. I will check your thread.

Just one question: have you tried to disable MIUI Optimizations in the developer options? I've seen users of other Xiaomi devices saying that it can improve the performance of the device, whether it's true or how much it improves, I don't know

That could explain the part where I said performance improved after using it for a while. I actually switched off MIUI Optimization in this part.

Done that, still slow. Will probably return the phone.

You need to wait for some time it'll get better

Any updates how is it working now?

Mine works perfect for the price.

Out of the box the phone does not feel snappy.
I've debloated the phone, removed 60 packages.
The phone feels snappy now after removing Google Assistant.

Change Poco launcher for Lawnchair, probably you will feel the diference.

Hmm, I'd say with this update (as well as replacing the Poco launcher with Lawnchair), I did notice some performance improvement, yeah.
I wouldn't say by a lot, games still have the same amount of lag, but scrolling and opening apps definitely feel smoother and perfectly acceptable now imo.

Z2 Tablet vs Antutu benchmark app

Hi all,
I discovered the Antutu benchmark performance testing app, as I was looking into some lagging i've been experiencing when switching between apps. I've even tried improving performance using SetCPU, but i'm still not completely impressed with this tablet compared with a gen 2 iPad I had previously.
My tablet stacked up OK in the test, but the standard performance of a couple of the Samsung tablets and an HTC phone (I think) was quite a bit better. This was a bit of a shock, as I understood that this tablet was supposed to be a pretty solid performer.
Does anyone have thoughts on this? Are my expectations unrealistic? Is there something I should do?
At the moment the tablet is rooted and running Apex Launcher.
Thanks!

Both Samsung and HTC are known to be cheating in benchmarks and HTC is still doing it. That said, I don't care about benchmarks. I know what the hardware is capable of and I where hoping for some custom roms to advantage of, but things are moving slow and I may have been a bit too optimistic. One thing I am very happy about compared to my ipad is ram. My ipad keeps killing apps and have to reload when I return. Even having two tabs open in safari and trying to copy/paste between them is a big hassle. I am very happy with mine and have no problems, except marking text is broken at least in chrome (if you drag to extend your selection, it will drop to next line, making it almost impossible to mark the multiple words you want).

Hmm... OK. THanks for the thoughts. I guess it might be that the niggling problems with the z2 are going to be sorted out with software updates by Sony as time progresses - hopefully that is the case.
And i'm really not completely sure of how custom ROMs work and whether they would help, but if that is a prospect i'd definitely take advantage of. For interest, which custom ROM that may soon come out would you recommend? And why?

I must be lucky, because I don't experience any of the those touch problem people report. Maybe Sony's have used parts from more suppliers and only parts from a specific supplier experience the problem. I don't know, I just hope for everybody and that it get sorted out.
It is difficult to recommend any rom, when there are none. This is my first Android tablet and I have no experience with the rom situation. However on my phones I have been using carbon rom with great success. It is based on Cyanogenmod, but has additional functionality from other roms. Especially I like the expanded desktop (immersive/fullscreen) functionality and slim-shortcuts to different settings including toggling expanded desktop. I am not using it at the moment though, because I have updated my Htc One m7 to latest Sense 6 rom (or rather a custom rom based on original Sense 6 rom) and whatever HTC have done, it is working, I have never had such a speedy rom. I also like the makeover HTC did with Sense6, so I think I will stay with it, although I used to dislike Sense.

Is your OPT feeling pretty slow?

Hey all,
I bought a One Plus 2 yesterday (coming from the Galaxy S6) and immediately noticed how unbearably laggy the Oxygen OS was - am I the only one experiencing this? I get a few moments of fluid animations but then things just get choppy, especially compared to the Galaxy S6. I've since put the Chinese Hydrogen version on and it seems a lot more fluid but I just feel like it should be a lot faster? I've been considering just selling it on but this phone is perfect in nearly every other regard.
I was thinking that maybe this is just how things will be until some decent updates come along? Unless I'm the only person experiencing the choppiness.. Then I suppose I should be pretty worried indeed. As a point of reference, I've also used the Moto X 2014 and Z3 Compact which both seemed considerably smoother in operation. Some input from you guys would be great, along with any tips you might have to get the most out of this amazing phone.
Thanks.
Lol coming from an s6 you think its laggy? I switched from an s6 and compared to that this is the fastest phone I've ever had
Sent from my ONE A2001 using Tapatalk
Yes it is laggy as oxygen is still on beta, but you should wait and give time as it is a beast, give some time to one plus and they will fix the issues
You did update it right? The build it comes with is as dog**** as the home button is
Just update to 2.0.2 and u'll be fine.
Sent from my ONE A2001 using XDA Free mobile app
Yup.. It usually lags when you switch to airplane mode.
Sent from my ONE A2003 using XDA Free mobile app
Phone is brand new. OxygenOS is in beta.. Let some development happen man, these specs dont lie
I updated and just got mine! Excited but it is slow. Some things up
Seems fast to me. I showed the OPT to my coworker who has an S6 Edge and he was impressed. He said it was faster than his S6. I didn't even ask him that.
Lol you obviously didn't use the fingerprint sensor to turn it on then or try to go to the home screen pressing the sensor home button. Jk
I've had several phones with fingerprint scanners and this one is by far the fastest so far and the phone is quick. Home button works great also. Maybe I just got lucky.
Yeah mine's pretty slow. I went into a phone store today and tried out the Huawei Mate 7, which on paper looks way behind the Oneplus 2, and it KILLED my OPT when opening apps.
I often get lag here and there, but this is less of a problem for me. My mane gripe is how long it takes to open an app. Like, I hit the Phone icon and it literally takes up to a second to launch. That Mate 7 was practically instant.
What gives, Oneplus?
A lot of the issues I initially had with oxygen were fixed after disabling hardware buttons, including excessive battery drain, heating up, and lag similar to what you're seeing. Maybe it has something to do with grounding? Or maybe I just got used to it :S
This phone is just not meant to be a daily driver with the frustration it brings. If you want to be less mad install cm 12.1. Makes things much better than oxygen
Try flashing OxygenOS 2.0.2 again and then factory reset. You may see a bump in speed. I personally have no quirks with the fluidity of the phone. While it does have some bugs all over the place, never once did the phone feel sluggish. But with that said, the OS does need a lot more polish to really make it feel truly complete. Right now despite all the OTAs OxygenOS still feels incomplete, or maybe its because I'm too used to the versatility of a CM based ROM.
It's slow for about a minute after boot but then things are really fast

Actually, the problem is because 2 google apps are using your CPU way too much. Disable the sheets and the slides apps in settings and you should be fine. CPU usage dropped by 40% in cpu-z after disabling these apps.
Update:- actually the CPU now has really less usage after disabling (5% after disabling.).

That's something new.. I anyway just remove these apps from my /system..
Im on OOS 2.1.2 rooted.. Having xposed and AK kernel.. No lags.. Super fluid..
For those complaining about the slow app launching, download a 3rd party launcher and you'll see instantly the difference in app launching. I prefer google now launcher to maintain that stock feel.

From my personal experience i have seen that tmobile update make the phone snappier, better battery life etc or the other way around even when they only state is only a security patch update
I got the update and now I can't login to my phone. It wants me to put in the password (just once, then I can use fingerprint again like before). But I never setup a PIN and now I can't get into my phone!!

"Futher improve to perfomance" so kernel mods changing and modifying a few codes for better perfomance which take no memory is also a placebo effect. Gonna have to explain that to all the kernel and tweakers developers in xda.
This is not a new OS or OS upgrade. Doesnt need to be 1gb to get better improvement on the phone. U can try the update and see. Im loving the speed.

Every update says the same darn thing. If you go look at the google code revisions, you'll be disappointed. Besides, I did this update many hours ago, not one iota difference in noticeable speed on my NON ROOTED STOCK device. I reboot every morning so I get the nice, fresh "fastest" possible speeds, at least until standard android and samsung bog downs occur by the end of the day.
But, if your gut says you feel a difference, more power to you.
About Kernel mods here. They take existing base and tweak specifically for speed at a trade off of potential stability. Google and Samsung, neither are well known for real speed improvements. They shoot for stability over mass numbers of devices vs speed. Their professional developers that know and work with the code day in and day out would nothing more than love to tweak it and massively optimize it for even their own devices but they have to march the corporate line.

If u look back when this phone was release a year ago and all thr updates tmobile has done it s now. Completly different phone, speed and perfomance wise. Phone also doesnt hit up like a toaster like when the phone was release.
Is funny u said to go and check every update. Cause if u do the same here in xda u are going to find out most member talking about improvement, battery life and other thnlings. But i guess all of them are wrong cause is all a PLACEBO effect. If samsung didnt care about perfomance why is the U version the fastest and better version. This is why almost everyone is waiting on the nougat U version including me.
Feel sorry for u that u have to restart your phone everyday. U most have a lemon GS7 edge. I never have to do this to feel my phone fresh and fast.

This is pure BS! When I searched the web for this issue I found that this has happened before and as far back as at least 2 years ago!!
I mean, this seems like a straightforward fix from Google's side...Have the updates NOT trigger PIN requirement if there's was no PIN present. For anyone that's more familiar with such things, am I oversimplifying it here? It's just that easy isn't it?
I guess i will be updating in the am.

Seems like a small change, but I am getting better standby time. Left the phone unplugged all night last night after the update, a wipe of the cache, and a full charge. Woke up today it still had 96% battery left at least a 3% improvement over before the update.
I'll run the test again tonight to see if I get similar results. It's a pretty nice improvement if it stays that way.

[OPM1] Is there real jank? I'd say yes

Hi all,
I'm a proud owner of PH-1 since yesterday. The device is beautiful, feels so good in my hands, premium looking.
But, after checking everything was working fine and applying all the OTAs, I felt the performance was not good enough. You know, the unwanted jank.
I'm sure that Snapdragon 835 + screen resolution combination must fly, without jank at all; the best proof is that it's something you experiment with the current Lineageos ROM, although I haven't tested it by myself yet.
Therefore, after reading some comments which pointed that OREO beta performed better, I upgraded to it and made a FR to start with a clean upgrade. But I still have that unpleasant feeling.
I've taken several systraces trying to find out something that could help, but the truth is that jank is everywhere. Two examples:
- Scrolling through Amazon app: check amazon.png attachment. Several frames lost at once, due to the orientation sensor + sporadic jank:
Title MessageLoop::RunTask
Category toplevel
User Friendly Category other
Start
1.619,131 ms
Wall Duration
138,135 ms
Self Time

Args
src_file
"../../mojo/public/cpp/system/simple_watcher.cc"
src_func
"ArmOrNotify"
- Scrolling through Settings. Jank again (specially when the end scrolling animation is shown).
This has been just a quick analysis. We can confirm that improvement is possible. It's not only a feeling now.
I don't know if Essential team reads this forum, but I'd love to see this improved. It's the only thing, IMHO, that needs to get fixed to own a perfect phone.
Thanks in advance.
Best regards,

They are aware of it and they said this issue is top priority. Whether they can fix it that remains to be seen. My gut tells me they can improve the touch scrolling, but ultimately there's an issue with the LCD panel. I am hoping it's not a design flaw and that I'm proven wrong. This is my main issue with the device. I love everything else about it. In Lineage the touch scrolling and performance in general is much better compared to stock or Oreo beta, but the touch scrolling issue is still there.
The problem with the scrolling is waaaaay better than my LG G4 (which seems to have been programmed to go down after a year ).
The only issue I really had is with some news website opened through the Facebook app, where scrolling is just not working.
Thanks for your replies.
Just to summarize: I'm talking about performance problems, that's it, missed frames when scrolling or an animation is shown (ie: open an app). That's not acceptable on a device powered by a 835 processor.

Switch to Lineage if it really bothers you. I personally could not handle stock for the reasons you mentioned. Lineage is like using a completely different device. Night and day difference when it comes to UI smoothness and performance. Latest build has incredible battery life too.

Completely agree. I switched to LineageOs yesterday, and looks like a different phone. No jank and battery consumption is really good so far.
Thanks for the tip. I would really like to go back to stock, but once they have fixed both idle consumption and jank issues.

A little disappointed about the performance

Hi there,
I am now using my RN7 (3/32) for about a week and I am really disappointed about the perfomance. I had a P9Lite and a Moto Z Play before, both phones did start Apps way faster than the RN7. I also have little lags when scrolling e.g. in Nova launcher or the system setting. Is this normal that a 2 year old phone with half as much antutu score as the RN7 is faster? Or do I have to change anything?
Phone is not rooted, all on stock and I also did a factory reset two times. The unlock is requested but I have to wait for 168 hours.
Thank you and with best reguards.

Stock MIUI is kinda laggy with lots of bloatwares. If you compare those phones, make sure to take into account of their hardware specs and default softwares.
You can search for how to make MIUI run more smoothly.
Thank you, I replaced the phone now by a Poco F1.

Haha, now that is A solution !
My Note 7 fell into the sea, so I changed it with another Poco. Now my Huawei Mate screen is screwed up, I had an excuse to get another Note 7, but this time from online, so much cheaper from China.
I think the Note 7 is very good, but I had it rooted, and unbloated, and other stuff.
Dont see why for me it performs really well, just have to optimize it, unlock bootloader root custom ROM and custom kernel
My 24/7 settings Alucardshed governor limited to 300-2150
HW Prime
Antutu
I also had a antutu of about 142000, this seems to be normal and also okay for the phone. My biggest problem was, that there very little lags when scrolling in the menu or e.g. Nova launcher. Also switching between apps took really long, not because of a lack of memory more because of the apps were closed too fast and had to be reloaded really often. When you turn the phone on and want to have a quick look on faceboo, the app har to reload nearly every time. I know this is high-level moaning, but it just drove me crazy.
The phone is okay, you always have to keep in mind how much it costs. But I did expect more from it as in Germany it was praised as the midclass-killer phone.

Every device is great when you know how to tweak it. As you replaced your RN7 with a Poco F1, this thread can be closed.
