Motorola Droid Turbo Prototype XT1254 - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo General

Came across a Droid Turbo Prototype which has a big difference than the release version. The power button is the Motorola Logo on the back. It's interesting how they decided to drop that design to go with the button on the side, and also gets you thinking how many variations of prototypes they go through with different designs. Would be cool if someone would know how to incorporate this feature to be able to be applied to a release version but would be hard considering the fact the inner parts (moto power button and flex) are not mass produced or available.

In this picture bellow, you can see I circled in red the top connector which is for the flex cable that leads to the motorola logo power button on back (on the release version this connector is not soldered onto the board, and the bottom two connectors I dont know what they are for, but they are covered by a metal shield on the release version board.
You can look at the YouTube video bellow to see the Release version disassembled to compare to the prototype.

Good luck sanding off that Verizon tramp stamp lol

For the last two flagship phones (2013 LG G2 and 2014 LG G3), LG has put the power button/volume buttons on the back. While innovative, some people have had trouble adjusting. In fact, the 2014 iteration of this concept for the LG G3 was improved over the LG G2, due to user complaints.
2013 LG G2 and 2014 LG G3
Google -- who also owned Motorola during that time -- made LG put the power/volume buttons on the side for the 2013 Nexus 5 -- which was based on the LG G2.
So, Google apparently did not like backside power button buttons. While there was a Quark prototype with the back button, apparently it must not have passed testing. Maybe it was too easy to accidentally hit the power button, maybe too many people didn't like it.
There's also cost and interchangeability of parts/supply chain. Google was selling off Motorola to Lenovo. They jacked the price of the Nexus 6 way up to make the books look better (no subsidized pricing in this generation of Nexus!). Keeping side power/volume buttons on all Motorola phones keeps costs down. The Quark phones already have kevlar and ballistic nylon as unique factors which increase complexity of manufacturing...
I think the back power button would add to the allure, just like the kevlar and ballistic nylon. I think it was shortsighted to change it back to the side button if cost alone was the deciding factor.

Sad thing it Verizon probably wanted it even BIGGER!
Of course he can get a back cover kevlar+ ballistic nylon replacement cover without any stamp at all.

A replacement back for a Prototype? Have fun finding on of those. He could get a regular one and modify it a bit. He'd have to cut out the moto logo on the back but everything else should fit

second prototype we know of, is motorola throwing away prototipes? is that bad their security?

This could easily be the same prototype phone, I don't know where the person who I got it from got it. I did look through the firmware etc, it def is bootloader unlocked and all that stuff, but I don't know much about software.

The button on the back isn't easy to accidentally press. Its actually very comfortable to use, but would take getting use to. Would be cool if you could have both the back and side as an option.

"To get into the bootloader: With the device off, press and hold the power on the back or on the side along with the volume down button." <-- That would be nice lol

Lol ya

Where did you get this one from? You said you didn't get it from Swappa, yet most of the pics from Swappa versus what you posted are identical. Everything down to the dent below the power volume buttons and the chipped pieces under the capacitive keys.
I'm curious how you acquired this.

Someone is selling one of these prototypes on my local craigslist lol. Had to search for more info on it and ended up here. Wonder how many of these are floating around?

I got it from someone, but I dont know if they want their info shared so yea, but I wouldnt be surprised if it was the same phone posted online. However I do know its bootloader unlocked and all that good stuff, but I don't know much about soft, that info would be usefull to a dev, however my reasons were aesthetics and to see if the M button could be reversed to be able to install on release versions. It can but the problem would be where to find or manufacture that M button, because the connector place is on the board, just needs to be soldered on.

I think the prototype looks prettier!

I believe the original idea of the Motorola button on the back was to be a finger print sensor. Even the Moto X 2014 still has the contacts for it, it is just not used.

yup, the contacts on ribbon could supply power for either a power button, or power button/finger print sensor combo. It would be could if someone would be able to modify it to get it working

Custom Wizard case being made

Custom Wizard casemod
Hello my friends,
I've been using a Wizard for quite a while now. I've added a lot of programs and utilities, removed some, modified others, but never changed my ROM (still with its WM5 )
Recently, my QWERTY keyboard got damaged, and the case is all scratched too... So I've got this (strange) idea: make a new case for my Wizard. Since the keyboard is damaged, I'll remove it and try to make this babe a little slimer.
I would like to state that in no way I have any connection to HTC, nor this is a new HTC device. It's only a personal project to improve my own device.
November 24, 2009
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just started to make the skeleton frontal piece that holds the LCD and front buttons. Horray! \o/
November 20, 2009
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finished the prototype for the case. Making some final adjustments, then ready to make the real thing!
This prototype now has another cool feature: it has an internal skeleton and an external shell, so you can have multiple "skins" to change whenever you get sick of one. I've rendered a red shell just to show an example.

Finally got some vacations, and now I can dedicate myself to this dreamy project. Here are some pics of the old Wizard, just as the darky-obsidian-glossy-mirror-like plastic, lol.
October 8, 2009
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today I've finished the prototype in Photoshop, since that was vital for this project. These buttons were removed, since I've never had any use for them: volume slider, comm manager and voice dial (is it?). The camera button is missing, but I'll insert it there tomorrow .
October 7, 2009
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'll be using hard and soft plastic for the case. The soft plastic will be used where there are buttons, since it'll be a single piece (as Nokia N78 did with some front buttons). The rest will be hard plastic. I'll try to achieve a black piano-ish finish, just as the black Diamond.
I've took some measuring, and if my plans are right, I'll take 1/3 out of its thickness!
I love my Wizard, but I always felt it kinda chubby in my pocket, and the screen bevel always makes it hard to hit the X button with the bare finger... So I'll be making a flat front, making it easy to hit the corners and other sliding moves.
PICTURES
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the initial prototype. Dead flat front, single piece buttons and plate, except the central confirmation button.
Old case part... Full of scratches, as I've sprayed it all black once, but it went like crap. Nevermore, hah.
The plastic being used for the outside casing. Yes, from old CD cases... They have such a high quality!
Actually they aren't that reflective... Some sanding and car polishing compounds make that baby ;D
Old case in a size comparison
More scratched parts
This is how bad the old spraying went...
My Wizard fully disassembled
Later!
Wow. good luck!

But it would be a pleasure, surely
More updates on #1
how will you get the keyboard to slide out?
@nateskates , he said that he had removed it because it's damaged. so there will be no keyboard at all. i wonder if absence of the keyboard can make some problems in windows... cause wizard roms have keyboard and now it will be unplugged... anyway, good luck!

I thought about that too, but I have already tested that before this project, and nothing weird happened.
I cannot guarantee that it won't cause any problems, but I presume that Windows was programmed in a way that it "expects" for keyboard events, and not "require" them.
If anyone is watching this, I have disassembled the Wizard again to make the CAD for the new case, to see how everything fits and the exact measures I need
Later!
How's your project? any progress? I can't wait to see it finished
This looks too good to be true , good luck and if you will do it , i will pay you any amount of money to do mine the same.
Hello my friends,
I'm sorry for these days without any updates, but here are some news
I was looking for a good plastic, one that would delivery a highly reflective surface, just as the Diamond... well, found one, so the part I was most worried about is done, lol.
Right now I'm still doing the CAD... everything gotta be very well measured and planned, as any milimeter counts!
Hopefully I will post both the CAD and a pic from the plastic.
@V3R: me too man, just can't wait to see my Wizard in shiny black!
@mat7ey: lol, looks like I will have to get an eBay account
Keep watching
Hi nandobang,
been around here for a while and instandly hoping that you´ll have success in the end - your case is the most beautiful I have ever seen (even compared to any new HTC). Do you have any ideas concerning the "production" - will it be injection molding or rapid prototyping? Nevertheless, please let us know any news....
cheers!
Hello my friends,
I'm so sorry I haven't posted any news til now, but I've been so busy with college and my job at least I'm getting on vacations now!
I've made a few virtual prototypes, measuring stuff, and already got the nice mirror plastic I'll be using.
@elSiko: hey man, thank you! I'll be making a fast prototype, since I don't have any pro tools at my disposal. Brazil sucks at some points =\
I was thinking about some pretty hard epoxi to get all external case parts togheter, and an internal plastic skeleton to hold the PCBs and such... Still figuring out the best way to do all this, but I WILL, lol
Keep watching, since now I have more free time.
Thanks, everyone!
Can you make a version with keyboard, for normal Wizards . Will you sell this case?
Hello my friends,
I finally got some vacations!!! God knows I'm happy, lol!
Well, my Wizzy is lying here, dismantled on my desk, waiting for it's new shell... I'm planning the way things will go inside the case, how to lock everything down, etc. New pics on first post!
What do you think about this name?
HTC Obsidian
The design reminds me of the obsidian vulcanic stone, as it is mirror black.

It sure is possible. In my case the keyboard is damaged, and I wanted a thinner device (without spending so much on a Touch Pro... you wouldn't believe how expensive these things are in Brazil... as a milk box is US$ 2,00 and a Touch Pro is US$ 2000,00... something around that basis)
I'm really considering making these to sell... so many requests.......
Right now, I'm doing a sketch, and then we'll jump into production! \o/
I can tell you that my mouth is watering right now.
Love your concept. I'll be buying one if you manage to finish!

While I'm doing the final sketch, I'll give a hint for a little surprise: does anyone ever got tired of the case color?
For everyone who asked me if I would sell this: I'm thinking about it. As soon as I start to produce mine, I'll see how easy or hard it is to make one... Since I don't have any pro tools, would take too long for a "mass" production, lol.
Cheers, and thank you, everyone!
Sim, sou português!
Estou muito ansioso por ver o teu projeto a ganhar forma!
Tens algum blog onde se possa seguir o progresso?
Translation:
Looking forward to see it finished!
Where can we follow the progress?
im kinda sceptic about this, things like volume control will be very difficult to make work. the final work looks too optimistic... keep it up and dont destroy your wizard, sometimes just _GOOD_ paintwork is simpler and looks cool

UK / EU Nexus S review & compare to Galaxy S

I am doing a little self promotion here but no advertising involved!
Having owned a Galaxy S GT-I9000 for several months now I have picked up a Nexus S and wish to try my hand at a review. For now I have three days of use and opinions up on the site and an in depth compare with audio quality recordings as well as video and picture comparisons coming in the next few days.
The intention is to give a more UK / EU focused look since we have the GT-I9000 Galaxy S here where most of the reviews are looking at variations in the US such as the Captivate.
Please do feel free to make comments, or ask questions on the site, here, or at http://twitter.com/nailerr as I want this to be useful to anyone who is thinking of shelling out for a Nexus S!
The page is http://technocrate.net
Thanks, all!
Nice, I was thinking about doing this until I saw your post. I just got the nexus S tonite and I must say I am pretty impressed with it so far. Especially the auto restore of the market apps. I am in pretty much the same scenario as you, I got mom to buy the phone in US and I am in Asia, so returning it is pretty much not an option.
A little peeved at a few things tho, how did you get around these?
01. Got the same back button problem.. but not too concerned about it
02. Tried to play pocket legends, and it hanged the phone in about 5 mins.. as in no force close just hang.. had to do a take out battery and restart
03. Where is the video player in this thing? do not see it in the apps, installed rock player.. hating the ads, but wanting to see if there is any better options before committing to the big price they are asking for
04. got the screen protector from best buy and it is so much fail that it is not funny Hoping that there will be better options pretty soon.
However all in all, I am still quite happy with it just small stuff.. which I guess I had when the i9000 came out too
Nice review, let us know if you have any more thoughts in a few more days.

The video player is part of the Gallery app, if you have videos on the external storage it will show up there. I use mVideoPlayer, it's free and I'm quite happy with it although it doesn't have MKV support.
About the Back button at first I though I had the same problem with my unit. But then I realized that the issue was happening only when I used my left hand to hold the phone and my left thumb to touch the back button. I started paying attention to this and I finally noticed that I wasn't touching the actual button, but the 'dead' area on the side of it. See the picture below:

When I thought the button was unresponsive I was actually touching the area in red, but the sensitive area is the highlighted in blue. This is probably due to my previous device being a Milestone which had the back button very close to the corner. Maybe you guys are doing the same thing or maybe I'm the only one dumb enough to do this and my unit is not defective hahaha.
edit: oh, and I'm on the same ship of you guys. I can't return the device and I'm afraid I have the screen issue when the brightness is set to low and the gray tones get all weird. I'm used to it though lol

Thankyou so much for that! I was starting to worry about my back button not working properly, and I really don't want to have to pay to get it shipped back for repairs, then shipped over here again. I will see if this helps me!
No reason not to voice an opinion! We are some of those who took an expensive plunge outside the retail regions and may find useful things for other people. So your questions in order:
01. I will possibly exchange mine when next in the UK, as suggested below it might be a bit off but I have spent an hour or so just testing the button with different fingers and pressure since I know my index finger tip is less conductive than the flat. Tough skin! I think it is a widespread defect but a defect nonetheless.
02. I have had one total lockup so far, sounds exactly the same. It was not in a game that I recall and honestly did not note what did it since it was just the once but given you had it happen in a game and Gingerbread is so new it would not be entirely unreasonable to put it down to some OpenGL hangup. The Hummingbird in the Nexus S has one of the faster GPU's on the market and also some media extensions called NEON, combine this with some new UI hardware acceleration with the GPU and... Well these things seem likely to happen.
03. As nicholasbgr said the Gallery is the video player. Android stock is very basic. Something I need to mention actually is that the Galaxy S is a very capable media machine out the box.
04. I had a Zagg InvisibleShield for my Motorola Milestone before finding out it was Gorilla Glass. Super, super tough. A little hard to apply since it does not simple glue on but very much worth looking into. They claim a lifetime warranty on your device if something scratches through the film.
Thanks for the reply too, I will check back to the other replies in a bit but I have to run from the computer for now!

on my 7th g2

Mod Edit: There are tons of threads regarding the "hindge issue" - SEARCH next time.~TheRomMistress
I have had nothing but bum g2's since the beginning.
the original one i bought had the loosest hinges ever. i couldnt lay on my back and slide my keyboard open while i had it facing me. the screen would just over lap due to the hinges.
i called tmobile and they sent me a replacement.
that replacement had scratches all over the place and came with a dirty glove with the initials AJ on them.
called tmobile,
2nd device had a dent in the speaker grill
called tmobile
3rd device was perfect, but wouldnt even power on no matter what i did
called tmobile
4th device was missing that sd card tray thinggy, it just wasnt there
called tmobile
5th device lasted a week before i noticed that one of the hinges was incredibly loose and the other was tight
called tmobile
6th device liked to turn off on its own and vibrate till i pulled the battery out. i wiped everything via recovery and it still did it. i unrooted and it still did it.
called tmobile
after one month on this 7nth device my hinges are incredibly loose again. and i dont want to follow a how to on how to remedy or fix this. although i understand that wear n tear can be a MOFO i dont think htc should be making devices with questionable hinges or build quality issues.
im calling tmobile now, been on hold for almost 50 minutes and i just dont want the g2 anymore. i love this phone, i really do. but if my hinges r gonna keep fking up on me then its just not worh it.
do u think tmobile will take back my g2 and give me something else? i dont mind paying a little extra if i have to. any advice?
When I worked for them they have an alternative handset replacement program and also gave out new handsets instead of refurbs after a few exchanges. Tell them you want a NEW device sent out as their refurbs suck. Ask for a manager if need be.

Do you even use your keyboard? i dont have the hinge problem but since i dont use the keyboard i use double sidded tape to keep mine shut and for it not to get loose from wear and tear. dont use the industrial kind just the one thats sticky enough to hold it shut but weak enough to come off easy when ever you really need to use the keyboard.
Mod Edit: Removed Quote ~TheRomMistress
1st ones hinges were so loose i couldnt hold the phone upside down with out the screens half completely separating from the keyboard half.
i had the first one for hardly a month, i want a nice clean refurb... not one with a dent in the speaker grill! thats unacceptable.
how can i fix with parts?! after i got a replacement i had to send in the previous device! besides, as a consumer i shouldnt have to fiddle with the oems device just to get it to work.
5th one was not fine. when held upside down, the top half had a larger separation than the bottom half. every time i pull the keyboard open, it had a wobble to it. thats not fine.
the 7nth one is not fine, screen literally opens in my pocket! how is that fine?!
i complain because i dropped my hard earned $ on a device that i really wanted and i expect it to work no matter what for atleast a year. i do all my typing on the physical qwerty, all of it. and if htc didnt think about people like my that prefer a physical qwerty over an on screen qwerty while they were designing their g2. then thats on them.
i guess i just have higher standards.....
tmobile is sending me a mytouch4g, didnt have to pay a dime. not even for express shipping. although its evident that the squeeky wheel always gets the grease, i didnt want to go this route.
i really love the g2, didnt want to swap out for another model. but i know if i accept another g2 the hinges will eventually get weak on me again...

Do you even use your keyboard? i dont have the hinge problem but since i dont use the keyboard i use double sidded tape to keep mine shut and for it not to get loose from wear and tear. dont use the industrial kind just the one thats sticky enough to hold it shut but weak enough to come off easy when ever you really need to use the keyboard.

im about 10% onscreen qwerty and 90% physical qwerty
my wife has had her g2 since day one and never ever used the physical qwerty. her hinges feel brand new everytime
This hinge issue is getting out of hand. It has been said many times that there is (practically) no way the hidge should be able to fall on its own if you hold it normally just like everyone else. If you hold the phone from the keyboard side upside down with the screen facing the floor, of course the phone is going to open up. You're forcing the phone to open that way.
I understand that $500 is a lot to shell out on a phone, but, the way I see it you're looking for the perfect device
You're not going to get it.

Have u ever complained to tmobile on there twitter page? I did that twice for similar issues and got the best results that way. I did that recently and not only was I shipped a brand new replacement not a refurb which I'm sure phones 2 through 7 were. I also got credited the original cost for my phone making the new replacement free. Not only that my contract was also reset so that I could get a full upgrade on any new phone coming out. It truly is all about who and how you speak to someone at tmobile. The twitter page has worked twice for me with the same results. The complaints are answered by corporate from twitter.

my wife had her g2 since it was first released. i just slid the keyboard open and held it upside down. the screen didnt close, at all. if you carefully and slowly flip it upside down it shouldnt close at all.
i wasnt looking for the perfect device. im ok with the crappy battery life. im also ok with that yellowish tint on the screen. but when your g2 is actually sliding open in your pocket while u run after your kid....
then theres a problem.

No need to get so personal.
Like I said bro, u can tip my wifes g2 upside down and the screen will not seperate from its position. Her hinges are new. Probably because she uses her on screen qwerty 90% of the time.
I think I've had enough g2's to know that these hinges do loosen up. Which is expected, but not so damn soon.
My friend across the street has a g2. His hinges r solid as hell. But he never ever uses the keyboard because he loves swype. 2 of my classmates have g2's. One is about as loose as mines and the other not so much. And the list of people I know that own g2s go on and on.
These hinges do wear out. there's a few here who do claim to still have perfect hinges n consider themselves power users. Although I havnt seen it with my own eyes I do believe them. I had a friend who had a 1 year old sidekick lx that had a solid screen hinge. No wobble what so ever.
So plz dhkr123, gratz on having such strong n sturdy hinges.
I think what is going on is htc is making phones they know will all be gone in 2 years.. why make a smartphone last forever if is the slowest think on the block before it brakes?. I agree we should demand a quality product but I don't think we should hold our breath for a re-enforced carbon steel hinge.
G2 CM6.1.1 (free)
I think the hinges being "loose" or not is all down to personal preference, I was trying a friends sony ericssion xperia x10 mini pro, and the you have to put a bit of force to slide the keyboard out and i just don't think it feels nice. I like taking my phone out of my pocket with one hand and just being able to slide out the keyboard with my thumb, but thats me on the other hand i'm pretty sure the cable connecting the phone to the screen is fried on mine.. must send it back for repair... at least I like my hinges

I agree. I'm not sure if it can be called a design flaw or what. But my old n97 never ever loosened up on me. Same thing with my n900. My g1 got a bit loose but u could hardly notice it. My gsm pre plus got super loose on me. My mytouch 3g slide actually stayed very firm. It would make sense to design something that can atleast last a year. I understand wear and tear, that's a given and should be expected. But not to the point to where my screen actually wobbles a bit too much when in the closed position.

Anyone used NILLKIN tree-texture leather flip case?

http://www.nillkin.com/english/proshow.asp?mid=2&sid=0&tid=0&cid=1&scid=13&id=2981&page=1
It's exactly the kind of case I like. I'm not afraid of dropping my Nexus 4. I've never done that with a previous phone and I don't see why it would happen with this one. Sure it slides more easily of the couch, but I can live with that. I do want something to prevent the glass from scratching. I could use a screen protector but I don't like the feel and the look. A flip case like this prevents the glass from getting scratched, and it looks really stylish IMO.
Has anyone bought this case? I've found a thread about this case but no one has actually used it. I don't even know if you can buy it anywhere besides on ebay. I would love to hear someone's opinion about this case, or even better; to see some actual pictures.
I am also interested in this style case for the reasons you mention. The issue I have is about where the flap goes while using the phone. Seems like it would get in the way. And camera use would mean the flap just kind of dangles and becomes a nuisance. These do look fantastic however.

Wow those look nice! I think I've finally decided on the case I want to buy. Yeah I think you're right, looks like can only buy on ebay and ships from china. If anyone buys one let us know from which seller.
Just thought of something... Is it easy enough to get in and out of the case that you just remove when the case gets in the way?

Hey I've bought this and it arrived this week from this buyer: http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/nillkin_case?_trksid=p2047675.l2559
Delivery was pretty quick considering that it came from Hong Kong.
My phone hasn't actually arrived yet but it looks like it will protect it quite well. When it is closed the sides are completely covered (minus a hole for the button on the right side) and the top and bottom are also open. The inside material of the flap is like felt and is quite nice, whereas the inside of the casing is plastic.
I don't think the flap will interfere with usage since it feels quite natural in the hand when open, but you can't flip it all the way back without stressing the material.
If you guys want to know anything else let me know and I'll try and help ^^
Looking forward to your thoughts once phone arrives. When do you think you will get phone?

You CAN'T flip it all the way back? That's pretty weird. I believe all flip cases are supposed to flip all the way back without stressing the material. It even says so on the website:

I've toyed around with a Galaxy SII that has a flip cover, and the flap does get in the way a little. You can flip it around the back, but it kind of defeats the purpose of having rounded corners and stuff. The whole design for ultimate handling, something the nexus line has always been good at, is kind of ruined with a case like this. But I guess that goes for all cases.
I don't take a lot of pictures, and that one time I do, I'm sure I can just let it hang. Anyway, maybe I won't always use this case, but sometimes it can be useful. Rather this than a TPU case or a hardcase. I've yet to find one that doesn't make the phone look bulky and/or cheap. And there are other leather flip cases, but none so stylish and thin as this one.
Here you can order one that ships for free to almost anywhere in the world. Don't know about the shipping time though. The price is $16.

I have one shipping to me as well. Bought it on 12/4 haven't gotten it yet but should be any day now. I think my diztronic hard ultra thin case will be delivered before that lol. I'll report back and put my lil take on it if no one has done so yet.
I may even sell it! I have too many cases coming in lol

Yeah it can flip back like that but I feel that if it is flipped like that for a while it will crease the material etc.
Just me being fussy
This flip case arrived for me today. The build is simply up there it feels and looks very nice. The holes are cut out perfectly and make accessing the power button and volume buttons very seamless. However like all flip cases taking photos feels a bit weird. But with that added protection for the screen I don't mind much. The case is also very minimal it doesn't add much thickness to the phone.
So far the only problem I see is that gripping the phone can be somewhat annoying especially since you have to put a little bit of extra pressure to fold the cover completely back. Even when you fold it back the little extra bit that sticks out to the right makes holding the phone in vertical orientation a pain in the ***. Also some apps in landscape mode refuse to flip around like bad piggies so having to hold the phone with the cover below is extremely annoying.
I will upload photos for you guys soon.

I really hate how lately there's been a lot of China sellers that check all the right boxes to show up under U.S. sellers only, when in reality they ship from China. Even though this seller claims to be from within the U.S., he actually mentions that the item ships from outside the U.S., so my guess is it's still drop shipped from China. I've had this happen to me quite a few times, place an order with a supposed U.S. seller, only for it to take 2 weeks and arrive in a totally foreign airmailed envelope. Another hint of this is when some of the seller's prices in their store appear to be converted to U.S. dollars, showing up in italics.

Plastic back slowly getting looser

So I've owned the tablet for over a week now. I like it. However the plastic backing around the microSD slot has slowly become loose and now holding the device feels like cheap plastic. I don't access the port at all, save the one time i put the sd card in.
Anyone else noticing this build issue?
I'd exchange it if it really bothers you. Mine is snug.

I got the official one. While it may not be worth $50 I like it well enough and it protects from the "everyday". I've never dropped a tablet so I'm not worried about drops.

The Samsung cover, does it stay closed on the screen just by weight, or do the magnets actually keep it closed?
magnet
I have same problem same area since day 1. Went to exchange, all sold oit! Other 2 problems are lightbleed and loose micro usb port.
maybe you provide us with an image to better describe the situation
Well. It is quite plasticy
I have mine over a week now, and haven't felt it loose. You should trade it mate. I like the bezel of the tab but the plastic is really annoying. There are quite a few cases out there though...

I got mine a few days ago and I must say I quite like it! The only build issue I have is a somewhat remarkable amount of light bleed along the bottom but it doesn't bother me enough to post a pic of it. Best buy only had one case that didn't look very good so I'm still sporting the protective back covering till more cases are in stock. I have high hopes for this!
I am on my 3rd Note trade in. It finally is not loose next to the sdcard. I told them I expect near Perfection if I Pay 400 for an 8 inch tablet!

It really should be of better build quality for $400. Or it should be at least $100 cheaper. I have the 10.1 and it feels OK, not terribly cheap but not of high quality. I will be putting it up on eBay and going to the 8.0 regardless, due to it being a more pragmatic size for my day to day use. I’m just waiting on the black version.
I had this problem as well. I replaced it at best buy and haven't had a problem with the new one.

Sure the build quality could be better but I haven't had a single issue with mine since I bought it on release day. From the reports here it seems like maybe some of them are not as solid as others.

Obviously they are not "all the same" since some owners are reporting here that there are no issues with theirs. I think most people are going to use some type of case with this, so IMO it's not too much of an issue. Of course I would like to see better build quality, but I don't think it's that bad. I agree that the plastic back is too shiny/greasy/slippery/nasty, but then again most people are going to put it in a case.
You can get a good sense of the build quality by checking out the display units at Best Buy (if you live in the U.S.). These things are handled by tons of people and kids each day who treat them with little respect because they don't have any personal investment in them. You can always tell which products on display have subpar build quality.
And Really? It was too thick for you? How much thinner do you want it? There won't be any room for the battery if it's thinner, or for the S-Pen silo/dock. I'd rather have a bit longer battery life and a secure place to store my S-pen rather than a thinner tablet. The weight, thickness, and balance in the hand are the best I have experienced in this general size.

Oooooooo magnets Are bad man. Not so much for regular phones but for phones with stylus and digitizer it will over time cause dead area s on your screen. Don't believe me ?
Head over to the note 2 forums and check out all the problems with cases involving magnet clasps. If got so bad the companies offered to replace your magnet sealing case with one with a simple button in stead. I had one and as soon as I put it on I started having problems with the area around that magnet.
Just stay away from magnetic cases period. Just trust me. Or mess up big time. Once that part of the screen gets borked its borked
That pic is the replacement one with the button they sent me. Also watch out for those magnetic kickstand cases. Big no no too those utilize neodymium!

Amen thin ness had gone to far. I don't want any thiner devices. Just keep them how they are and make better thinner batteries cpus whatever. Battery tech needs a big overhaul that's our biggest weakness
