on my 7th g2 - G2 and Desire Z General

Mod Edit: There are tons of threads regarding the "hindge issue" - SEARCH next time.~TheRomMistress
I have had nothing but bum g2's since the beginning.
the original one i bought had the loosest hinges ever. i couldnt lay on my back and slide my keyboard open while i had it facing me. the screen would just over lap due to the hinges.
i called tmobile and they sent me a replacement.
that replacement had scratches all over the place and came with a dirty glove with the initials AJ on them.
called tmobile,
2nd device had a dent in the speaker grill
called tmobile
3rd device was perfect, but wouldnt even power on no matter what i did
called tmobile
4th device was missing that sd card tray thinggy, it just wasnt there
called tmobile
5th device lasted a week before i noticed that one of the hinges was incredibly loose and the other was tight
called tmobile
6th device liked to turn off on its own and vibrate till i pulled the battery out. i wiped everything via recovery and it still did it. i unrooted and it still did it.
called tmobile
after one month on this 7nth device my hinges are incredibly loose again. and i dont want to follow a how to on how to remedy or fix this. although i understand that wear n tear can be a MOFO i dont think htc should be making devices with questionable hinges or build quality issues.
im calling tmobile now, been on hold for almost 50 minutes and i just dont want the g2 anymore. i love this phone, i really do. but if my hinges r gonna keep fking up on me then its just not worh it.
do u think tmobile will take back my g2 and give me something else? i dont mind paying a little extra if i have to. any advice?

When I worked for them they have an alternative handset replacement program and also gave out new handsets instead of refurbs after a few exchanges. Tell them you want a NEW device sent out as their refurbs suck. Ask for a manager if need be.

im still on hold
from what i gather, since the g2 is still a new model, they wont replace under that alternative handset replacement program

Tell them to make an exception. That is a ridiculous amount of replacements and completely unacceptable! Put your foot down, bro. Keep escalating and making their lives harder and harder!
Good luck

lol ill keep u posted

i was offered a moto charm....
being transferred to a super now....

super wants 267 for a mytouch 4g....

Do you even use your keyboard? i dont have the hinge problem but since i dont use the keyboard i use double sidded tape to keep mine shut and for it not to get loose from wear and tear. dont use the industrial kind just the one thats sticky enough to hold it shut but weak enough to come off easy when ever you really need to use the keyboard.

Mod Edit: Removed Quote ~TheRomMistress
1st ones hinges were so loose i couldnt hold the phone upside down with out the screens half completely separating from the keyboard half.
i had the first one for hardly a month, i want a nice clean refurb... not one with a dent in the speaker grill! thats unacceptable.
how can i fix with parts?! after i got a replacement i had to send in the previous device! besides, as a consumer i shouldnt have to fiddle with the oems device just to get it to work.
5th one was not fine. when held upside down, the top half had a larger separation than the bottom half. every time i pull the keyboard open, it had a wobble to it. thats not fine.
the 7nth one is not fine, screen literally opens in my pocket! how is that fine?!
i complain because i dropped my hard earned $ on a device that i really wanted and i expect it to work no matter what for atleast a year. i do all my typing on the physical qwerty, all of it. and if htc didnt think about people like my that prefer a physical qwerty over an on screen qwerty while they were designing their g2. then thats on them.
i guess i just have higher standards.....
tmobile is sending me a mytouch4g, didnt have to pay a dime. not even for express shipping. although its evident that the squeeky wheel always gets the grease, i didnt want to go this route.
i really love the g2, didnt want to swap out for another model. but i know if i accept another g2 the hinges will eventually get weak on me again...

im about 10% onscreen qwerty and 90% physical qwerty
my wife has had her g2 since day one and never ever used the physical qwerty. her hinges feel brand new everytime

This hinge issue is getting out of hand. It has been said many times that there is (practically) no way the hidge should be able to fall on its own if you hold it normally just like everyone else. If you hold the phone from the keyboard side upside down with the screen facing the floor, of course the phone is going to open up. You're forcing the phone to open that way.
I understand that $500 is a lot to shell out on a phone, but, the way I see it you're looking for the perfect device
You're not going to get it.

Have u ever complained to tmobile on there twitter page? I did that twice for similar issues and got the best results that way. I did that recently and not only was I shipped a brand new replacement not a refurb which I'm sure phones 2 through 7 were. I also got credited the original cost for my phone making the new replacement free. Not only that my contract was also reset so that I could get a full upgrade on any new phone coming out. It truly is all about who and how you speak to someone at tmobile. The twitter page has worked twice for me with the same results. The complaints are answered by corporate from twitter.

my wife had her g2 since it was first released. i just slid the keyboard open and held it upside down. the screen didnt close, at all. if you carefully and slowly flip it upside down it shouldnt close at all.
i wasnt looking for the perfect device. im ok with the crappy battery life. im also ok with that yellowish tint on the screen. but when your g2 is actually sliding open in your pocket while u run after your kid....
then theres a problem.

No need to get so personal.
Like I said bro, u can tip my wifes g2 upside down and the screen will not seperate from its position. Her hinges are new. Probably because she uses her on screen qwerty 90% of the time.
I think I've had enough g2's to know that these hinges do loosen up. Which is expected, but not so damn soon.
My friend across the street has a g2. His hinges r solid as hell. But he never ever uses the keyboard because he loves swype. 2 of my classmates have g2's. One is about as loose as mines and the other not so much. And the list of people I know that own g2s go on and on.
These hinges do wear out. there's a few here who do claim to still have perfect hinges n consider themselves power users. Although I havnt seen it with my own eyes I do believe them. I had a friend who had a 1 year old sidekick lx that had a solid screen hinge. No wobble what so ever.
So plz dhkr123, gratz on having such strong n sturdy hinges.

I think what is going on is htc is making phones they know will all be gone in 2 years.. why make a smartphone last forever if is the slowest think on the block before it brakes?. I agree we should demand a quality product but I don't think we should hold our breath for a re-enforced carbon steel hinge.
G2 CM6.1.1 (free)

I think the hinges being "loose" or not is all down to personal preference, I was trying a friends sony ericssion xperia x10 mini pro, and the you have to put a bit of force to slide the keyboard out and i just don't think it feels nice. I like taking my phone out of my pocket with one hand and just being able to slide out the keyboard with my thumb, but thats me on the other hand i'm pretty sure the cable connecting the phone to the screen is fried on mine.. must send it back for repair... at least I like my hinges

I agree. I'm not sure if it can be called a design flaw or what. But my old n97 never ever loosened up on me. Same thing with my n900. My g1 got a bit loose but u could hardly notice it. My gsm pre plus got super loose on me. My mytouch 3g slide actually stayed very firm. It would make sense to design something that can atleast last a year. I understand wear and tear, that's a given and should be expected. But not to the point to where my screen actually wobbles a bit too much when in the closed position.

Bye Bye Wing :(

I love my wing, well, did. It is malfunctioning now and instead of buying another one, for nearly the same price you can pick up a Hermes.
I'm not all that familiar with all these phones, but the Hermes seems more powerful, faster. Was curious if this is a good idea to switch or not...
Is there anyway to use Open Touch on the Hermes that you know of?
Thanks for the suggestions, comments.

No. OpenTouch is a Herald ROM only. The Hermes DOES have a few good ROMs, though as well as the ability for bigstorage roms. (60-80+ free mb of space.)
I guess you'll be hanging out with the Hermes folk now ...
Maybe go by their forum and check out some of the ROM's over there
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=254
I don't want to go to that forum. lol.... The short time I've been here, I really like the couple people who keep this place alive!
I'm going to call HTC today sometime and get a price to fix it, TMobile said basically "too bad, so sad" because I didn't buy it from them.
Maybe if it's reasonable, I'll get it fixed and sell it... actually in really, really good condition besides malfunctioning button.
But the question still remains, is it a good switch? Or are there some negatives to going with that phone over the wing?
You should probably ask the people in that forum... I'm sure they'll sell you on it.
I guess you can look at it, like asking your current girlfriend why you should leave her for another girl... hahaha
Good point. I have a really bad taste in my mouth about HTC and T-Mobile right now though. T-Mobile won't do crap to help me, and HTC wants me to send it in then they'll tell me how much to repair. If it's a $200 repair bill... I'd buy a new one, but if I don't have them repair it, they charge you $40 to "look" at it. Unbelievable. Spending hundreds on a phone and 4 months later you got a brick due to poor manufacturing.
Ugh, sorry for the rant... I'm just a bit pissed off at the moment.
Ok well I took the plunge and got the Hermes. I ended up getting a SquareTrade warranty with it for $30, covers the phone for a year with no deductibles.. way cheaper than tmo's phone insurance too.
Anyways, I may sell the wing to someone here if anyone wants it (still works VERY well except for button issue that is probably software fixable/patchable).
It was very nice meeting you all, thanks.
Good luck.
Depends on how much you're selling it for. Also, post pictures of it to see what kind of condition its in.
Double Post
I won't be selling it until I get squared away with the new phone.
I'll definitely post up some pictures. The condition of it is Good. A few normal wear and tear scuffs but barely noticeable, no major scratches, screen is perfect condition (had screen protector on it). No wear on the buttons. I mean, really, if I had to rate it's condition on a scale of 1 - 10, I'd say it's an easy 9.
HTC said they would do repair, so if you can't fix it yourself, that may always be an option as well.
What seems like a fair price?

SOLD!!!
I'm really tempted to "sell it" to a "friend" through ebay and have him get a squaretrade warranty on it, then send it in "broken" in 3 months. then I could get it fixed for a whopping $30
But I can't get myself to do it, I'm too honest.
The Hermes can do TouchFlo. Check this ROM out:

see, you have to look at it like this.... you got screwed with retail pricing on that phone ... so its not an issue about karma. it's totally fair.
Just out of curiosity what is this button issue your having?
My camera button stopped working and gave me a scare as i couldnt get into the bootloader after a bad flash.
theformula,
The phone has a mind of it's own, The d-pad button (right and sometimes top) just start "pressing" even though they aren't pressed, imagine trying to do something on the phone, writing email, messages, etc.. while someone his holding down that button. It's unusable.
I just got my 8525, and although the form factor on the wing is a bit better (barely different), I must say, the 8525 is a substantially better device. Not trying to talk trash, I loved my wing (and this community), but it just is what it is.
How is it better?
I feel like a jackass getting into it, lol... like "your wings suck" and I don't mean at ALL to come off like that. I still love my wing and it's getting fixed soon!
But.. why is the Hermes better?
- better battery cover, doesn't slide up during normal usage
- camera takes better pictures- better color handling, plus has FLASH
- SUBSTANTIALLY faster unit, it's a 400mhz processor and it shows drastically, just sliding S2U2 slider, or pressing the "end call" button and how fast it responds, opening apps, it's insanely noticeable, and my wing was OC'd to 273mhz. The Hermes just operates way, way, waaaaaayyyyyy faster - opening htc photo album is way faster, using gestures is faster, just everything
- Less hacks, no keyboard hacks or anything to use with ROMs
- No need for battery status software
- Cool software like "flashlight" that turns the flash on to illuminate
- The ROM's are more solid, better management software - has a manager that removes virtually all need to make registry tweaks (set IE cache/cookies, remove icons at bottom of today screen, etc.)
- Keyboard works WAY better, buttons are bigger and just incredibly easier to type on, never have to re-press a button or press harder for it to recognize keystoke... this is a selling point in and of itself.
- Has 3G capability (if you ever need it)- and certain models have front camera for video conference (need 3g i think)
- Has a scroll wheel on the side as well, that is a select button as well, so you can scroll down webpages and select links, scroll through contacts, etc.
- Has push-to-talk feature - if you ever decide to switch carriers, it's more than capable.
So thats what I can say for now... really, it's just a few milestones ahead, and I can't get over how much faster it is, previously daunting things on the wing or not an issue at all anymore.
to be fair, I'll mention a few things I like better about the wing
- the rubberized grip (looks less professional, but feels better)
- spring loaded slider
- cover for micro sd card slot, the Hermes' isn't bad, but the covered one is better
- slightly smaller form factor
- better button placement
- The screen colors are a little more vibrant on wing (although hardly noticeable)
Basically, the form factor and design of the wing are nicer, but hardware (processor/camera/keyboard) and software are much better on Hermes.
But as I said, I'm NOT trying to dog on the wings - so lets not turn this into a flame xbox360 vs ps3 style war.
I take it you have sold the phone?
I hope you haven't. I have a P4350 and I need a LCD very badly. Mine was smashed a while back and I have really started to miss my phone. Right now I am using a Nokia N95 and it's great but it wasn't a Herald.
Well I haven't sold the phone, I'll have my hands on it for another few months unfortunately. Unless you are willing to pay $180 for it... it hasn't been fixed. Everything works perfectly except the d-pad seems to have a mind of its own (I THINK it's the dpad) -- condition is an easy 8.5 - 9 out of 10.

X2 Case cracking already!!!

After going through this with my X1 which I took very good care of, I was sure to be extra careful with the X2.
SE blamed HTC for the design flaw that lead to cracks in the X1, well SE... what do you say about the X2 then???
After picking up my phone yesterday I felt a sharper more jagged feel near my camera button. I did not pay attention to it at first, but I felt it again and took a closer look. This is what I found!

Here you can see the crack goes through to where the metal tab for the battery cover locks.
So the question remains, was I just unlucky? Anybody else notice cracking there in that spot? Looking at it closely I can tell you it's awfully thin and I can't see it holding up for very long.
The only thing I can say that I do differently from the average X2 owner is swap out my batteries every day. I have a standalone charger and 2 spare batteries since my X1 and I prefer to swap fresh batteries every morning instead of using USB to charge so that I don't prematurely wear out (or break) the USB jack, as was a problem with some X1s. Surely this can't cause abnormal case cracking can it???
****, i jsut looked and i have a crack too.. omg i have taken good care of this phone
mtechfan your not alone with the swapping of the battery's each day i did this with my C902. i dont have a crack by the cam button but i have just noticed that were the stylis slides in the little clip that helped lock it in place is no longer there
Well, we better all check our phones!
If we look at this from a design view... I think that the plastic bit that has the clip, that holds onto the battery cover is too thin.
I can imagine the other one on the top side failing just the same.
the back cover hinges near to that point, wouldnt be surprised if it puts extra stress on that side. i dnt think they designed it in mind with people swapping the battery every day.
had my X2 over 5months and touch wood not a crack or anything on it so far. i dont swap the battery though. my x1 had cracks, keyboard failures, peeling varnish from back cover and all manner of problems by 5months...
i was only inspecting my phone the other day and thinking to myself at how well the X2 has lasted compared to the X1. very pleased with the build quality so far.
i think we will have to recommend to everyone to avoid taking off the back cover more than they have too...

The back side area only cracked for that person because of careless ness. When you putting on the battery cover on any phone and you dont take time to see what your doing thats what gonna happen. The X2 battery cover has to metal strips at the side to be placed on the grove of the phone< when you dont place it in the grove properly it will push out the side of the phone and may brake just like what you see in those pictures you see there. So we cant blame SE for our negligence

That is my phone and I KNOW HOW TO PUT THE DAMN BATTERY COVER ON! I take very good care of every device I have ever owned.
This cracked over time, it has nothing to do with me being careless. Your X2 will crack soon enough, then will you say you were careless?
It's a very thin piece of plastic, take a close look!

how long have you had your X2?
* edit * to keep this thread constructive i think it would be helpful for people replying to this thread to specify how long theyve owned their X2, whether theyve spotted any cracks (and where) and whether they swap the batterys or remove the back cover on a regular basis.
that way it can be established if theres a particular batch of X2s that are flawed and if theres a main cause or if its just random.

Good idea, I got mine around the end of March. Not that long really, the phone looks brand new except for the crack. I use screen protectors as well.
thats not long at all then. so about 8 weeks...
ive had a close look at that side, with the cover on it seems strong enough. but with the cover off its not all that strong. looks like the back cover provides quite a lot of the overal phone strength. the cover has metal hinges too so if anything is going to give it will be the plastic on the casing. dont really see why they had to hinge it. theyve had to put two holes there to accomodate the hinge, if they had kept a normal slide in and click back cover they could of made the casing much more solid. i suppose they thought they where being clever by having a cover with a nice locking mechanism.
ive had mine since february and the guy who had it before me must of had it a few weeks. so mine is nearly 5 months old. but ive probably only taken the back cover off about a dozen times at the most.
i also notice that the crack is quite close to the camera button.. i wonder if using the camera a lot contributes to the crack forming. i dont take many pictures so rarely use the button. just done a few tests and if u press hard on the camera button you can see the case flex slightly..
well, i don't change battery but i need take out the battery less 4 or 5 times a week to restart the phone cuz it has crushed.. also i have drop the phone a few times already..
since MR2 my phone hasn't really crashed only need a soft reset from time to time.. which i think its normal since its WINMO afterall

Yes, I have used the camera quite a bit. That might be it!
Same here, just noticed the crack exactly at the same location ((
Hi every body
I had an X1 too, and same problems that everyone had before, case crack without ANY reason while taking care well, keyboard problems after about 8-9 months and color disappearing of back.
As everyone knows SE said that HTC is responsible for problems of x1.
After all waiting for next work of SE, we have a very close arrival of x2 and x10, so I got an x2 because I BELEIVED that SE presented x2 with all experiences and failures of x1, considering that anyone in the world knew that x10 has a excellent build quality, .... and also some known lacks.
NOW I AM DISAPPOINTED AND MAD AT SE> SHAME ON SE because of having customers like us disappointed.
I had ericsson phones since T26, T28, ......, p800,910,990, x1 and now x2
The least they can do is a simple apology

Well I hope every X2 owner reads this thread and checks their device!
thanks mtechfan for the post.
I checked my phone...so far no cracks. and I dropped it and took the battery out, god knows how many times already
Ah, gonna keep my fingers crossed
This might not be highly relevant, but I have a very similar crack in my X1 (same place). It started as a tiny triangular chip along that plastic ridge/bumper. I remove the battery a decent amount due to flashing. I have also had about 2 bad drops.
Wonder if that plastic stuff some people cover their whole phones with would help avoid this.

1. First there was a dead pixel and yellow streaks on any white background.
2. A little light leaking at the bottom but I had already read about that before buying in.
3. Then now the screen is rising at the bottom. Pressing down on it makes it feel like the screen has suspension; what is this a Blackberry Storm?!?!?!
4. And my fav is the fact that my device likes to reset itself at will. The phone just sits on my desk and all of a sudden the screen lights up and then it begins the reset 4G logo and all that jazz. It's now happened over a dozen times in just the last 3 days (Maybe more while I slept).
Now RadioShack keeps telling me they are getting more in and then they all get sold before I get there. They keep telling me they are going to hold one for me but of course they don't do so and instead make a new sale. Told them just now, that I'm done and am just going to bring my phone back and end my new contract and take my business somewhere else.
I do not trust the Evo! Anyone who has an Evo and says they don't have issues is just setting themselves up for issues later. The Evo has issues sooner or later. For some of us it has been sooner, and for the rest of you, it will be later. I've had 3 HD2's and still have one and they never had any of these issues. The build quality on the HD2 was much better, not to mention the thinness made for a perfect size and feel. If you are used to the feel of the HD2, then you'll miss how this it is once you handle the Evo. Days later and I still dislike how thick the Evo is (all other dim are just fine).
Now the question is what to get next??? I do really like Android but the Nexus One is an ugly little phone to my eyes and all the rest also have screens too small. I guess I don't have little princess girlie hands and so I can't understand the complaints about 4 inch + screen devices being too big. At this point I'm ready to try the iPhone 4G even though the small screen and no removable battery, bug me a lot. So they claim Apple has great build quality and that's one thing I want for sure. Then again I also want to try the Samsung Galaxy S but I can't get confirmation as to when it will be release here and on what carrier first. The Cell Phone Gods are really raining something wicked on this gadget loving dude........
*****END OF RANT*****
Why not just go to a Sprint Corporate store with your phone and have them order you a new one.. Atleast then you won't get the run around from Radio Shack. I agree, you've got some issues there, but that's not to say your next phone will be the same. Sounds like you got a total lemon to me...
A lot of the issues you describe seem to be specific to one particular hardware revision of the EVO. If you search around on the forum you will see that people with units from earlier batches seem to be plagued by this stuff. My experience has been exactly the opposite, with the only unwanted resets occurring when I've been hacking the phone. If you can hold out for a replacement from a newer batch, I'm sure you will be a lot more satisfied.
They have a 30 day return period, right? It is there to remedy users like you feeling like they are stuck with a device they don't want. *edit* Maybe not since you indicated you bought at the crap shack. I'm not familiar with their return policy as I bought online from Sprint direct.
Even jailbroken, I will never be on the iPhone band wagon with you, but I hope it works out on your end.
As far as XDA goes, if you stay you will be isolated in the iPhone general forum here.

WOW....you know whats funny?..The same story your telling happened to me, BUT i had an HD2. The HD2 was the biggest POS i have ever owned in my entire life. The EVO has treated me well and i have NONE of the issues stated.
Clearly you have a bad phone. I say you either try and wait to snatch up a good working phone OR jump ship, iPhone 4. I had an iPhone for 2years...its a great phone!
what will ranting do? we see these posts daily on android forums, ppc geeks and xda.... htc nor sprint are looking at these posts.
look, if you are not happy with the device, return it for a FULL REFUND. then go to bestbuy tomorrow and pre order the iphone4. easy peasy lemon squeezy...

Funniest thing i have heard all day
Thanks for your input guys!
Last night I read page after page on all the popular forums and blogs. It seems that these issues (mainly the screen rising) are happening to many folks out there. Some people are claiming the same things are happening on replacement phones as well. And again, I'm sitting here playing around with both the Evo and HD2 and I just keep wishing that the Evo will look over at the HD2, get inspired and suck in its stomach to be a little thinner like the HD2. Ha!
The pictures of the glue being the issue with the screen, really leads me to believe that it's just a matter of time until it happens to all of the current Evo's sold or about to be sold. I'm sure they’ll fix the issue with yet to be assembled Evo's but I don't trust the current batch to stay solid. I just don't want to invest hours and hours of my life tweaking the heck out of a device and then have to get rid of it in a few months. As I type right now, I thought my phone was about to start ringing but nope it was the resetting again.
Oh well......Gotta do something though because having a working phone is a must......

Relax! Just letting off a little steam and sharing my experience with the rest of the class. After all this is a forum for sharing the good, bad and everything in between........
If I do go for the iPhone, I think I'll be the only person who gets a case just to cover up the Apple logo on the back. I really dislike doing the popular phone. Around my town, there is a whole breed of kids who drive Volkswagen Jetta's (or BMW 3 series with lease payments they can hardly afford); shop at The Gap and drink Starbuck daily if not hourly and all have iPhones. I'd like to stay away from becoming more and more like them. Okay all joking aside, I'm not an Apple fan but I would like to just stick with something nice this month.
If you do switch...
Which I think if you just try one more time, you'll stay.. If not then I would get the Iphone 4, It looks pretty sweet. I came to this new Evo from being a 3GS PROUD owner, I loved that phone, there wasn't a thing that I couldn't do with that phone. or a single App, widget or way I couldn't make it behave. (sorry)
I used and abused that phone. Battery worked like new after 2 years of abuse and tethering. Not one single problem with that phone. As for jailbreaking future, they will have 4.0 broken, they already do. and thats all you need to get everything you want.
What I would do is, and I'm startin to think about it too...
Go up to the main store like dude up top said, and give it a try, if you still have like a week left you can slow play it out to the last second and if they don't get it or refuse, then just cut it off. Get your money back and go get a freakin Iphone! and even tell em when you leave, "F*** THIS! I'M GETTI'N A IPHONE!!
have to agree that the hd2 build quality blows the evo away. most people wouldn't notice the things i notice but the power button on my evo is uneven and the camera is slightly crooked. not a deal breaker just bad quality. i did return my first unit because of a dead pixel.

I've been using 4inch + screens since 2004 (HP Pocket PC's) and I'm not sure I'll be able to go smaller so right now that's my main issue with the iPhone. Going to the 4.3" screen of the Evo, could you see yourself going back to a 3.5" screen?
Sounds like you have a lemon. No need to *****, bring it back to sprint or radio shack and get a new one or your money back.
Simple solution. If they don't have one ask sprint to order it for you.

I hate to admit it but you are a much better man than I.
I cannot tell a 1.7mm difference in my hand when not holding both together, side by side, even then it's tough. (considering that a microSD card is approx. 1mm in thickness). Nor can I tell the difference of 13 grams in weight (.4585 ounces).
You must have superhuman senses or a micrometer.

So just to be clear; if someone goes to a forum devoted to a device and begins to explain their experience with said device, it is *****ing as long as said experience is negative in nature? However, should one's experience be positive; then those comments are not to be considered *****ing? Okay, glad we're all on the same page here. Makes all the sense in the world......
Again as I've already stated; I ported in from T-Mobile. If I return my phone to RadioShack, then I will be ending my new Sprint contract and have to start a new contract elsewhere and in doing so, I will most likely not be able to keep my number of 10 years (not an option or risk I can take).

Haha! Really, I'm 6'1 and I'm guessing I have pretty big hands because I don't think any 4"+ screen device is too big. And the Evo can fit in my shirt or pants pockets with no problem. But after 2 months on the HD2, I really do miss how slim it's profile feels. I just picked them both up and I can't see how you or anyone else couldn't feel a difference. It may not be a big a big deal to many and would be even less so to me, had I never had the HD2 first.

Agreed, you got a lemon, go back and replace it. Sprint is good on that except since there is a shortage you might have to wait a bit... :\
good luck on the next one. It's honestly a good & cool phone. All the phones i have seen in person hasn't had any of these issues.
Hating my Evo now but still loving Android
So I have issues with my Evo and a hunch that I'm not alone in having problems. But does posting about it, make me a troll? That would be strange considering I wrote the below post right after I got my hands on an Evo.
My Evo experience from another post, BEFORE the issues started:
"I should be thanking you one last time for making the best ROM for the last and best WinMo 6.5 device which should go down in history someday. I'm already missing this thread; the email alerts and all of your updates you do here, plus the regular peeps around here have been real helpful and nice here on your thread.
I'll send you a PM about my HD2 for sale. I figure I'll sell it and add a lot of my paid apps along with it on a disc and then give away the rest to anyone who wants/needs them.
I don't want to turn you or anyone else away from the HD2 because I still really love and respect it. However, I thought I'd share some of my thoughts today after getting to know the EVO.
The thinness of the HD2, beats the EVO as you hold them both, you can feel the extra bulk of the evo, even though the weight difference is not much, not too bad as the reviews I've read. A pretty big difference for me right off the bat, was that the evo' screen def looks brighter than that of the HD2. Not just at first glance but all throughout today, I keep checking them out and I say wow what is it about the evo screen as if it's brighter and has a higher resolution. But I thought they both had the same screens?!
I've been tapping away on the evo screen all day and I also have to say that even though the screen is glass, it DOES NOT feel as thick/solid (for lack of a better word), as the one on the HD2. If you tap your fingernail on the evo screen and then the HD2 screen, you can feel that it seems thinner, almost, almost seems just a bit plastic like. Perhaps people, who aren't used to the HD2, might not notice this. And then again perhaps it's all just in my head from a lack of sleep (was on my way to Radio Shack at 5:30AM after 3 hours sleep).
Moving on to things that I know you guys can relate to here on this thread. MESSAGING!!!! It works VERY WELL and looks just fine. Fine as in very good. No more of the messaging tab (no tabs at all). Swype is framed right and seems to work a bit faster and smoother than on the HD2. Also the HTC keyboard, by a huge leap, works much better on the evo. I don't know why that is but I can use the HTC keyboard now and be pretty fast, fast enough to think twice about always using Swype. Really guys, the keyboard is much improved somehow. And the best part of the HTC evo keyboard is the voice to text WORKS REALLY well. I got a text while I was driving on the freeway with the A/C mid speed, I hit the speech button and spoke 120+ characters and it got them all right. And yes I know I should not be looking at my phone while driving (which makes the whole speech thing that much more useful).
This morning I was driving to get the evo and I started to wonder if I really wanted to walk away from WinMo and my HD2. I thought about all the apps I love on the HD2 and how there are a number of things I can do with the HD2, that can't be done or done the same on Android. I would keep the HD2 because I like it that much, but at the end of the day, I'm not a wasteful person and I do appreciate the things in my life, so I figure I shouldn't just burn $400.00 (cost of the phone plus the T-Mobile early termination fee) for a device I've had for only a couple of months. I think all the flashing I did, made the HD2 feel old to me because I don't feel like I've owned it only since March 24th.
The HD2 is smooth in terms of hardware/design and even the OS (thanks to Kumar), but the evo is even more smooth in all the same ways and then some. I wouldn't have known just how much I like the device and even the OS, until I brought the device home. No longer having to worry about any app or OS feature being finger friendly, seems to matter to me, more than I realized.
Again, I'm not trying to sell anyone here on the evo. Rather I'm just sharing my thoughts and excitement about this beautiful device, which happens to be related to another beautiful device known as the HD2.
I've already rooted the evo (was a very painless process) and now comes the painful part in testing 100 apps and all that tweaking stuff......
BTW' Kumar, It's too bad about the CDMA thing because that would have been really nice, if you were doing your work on this device, right alongside the HD2.
Sorry for this novel size post"

Well, no need to get derogatory Radioshack has the same 30-day window that everyone else has; can't sell a phone without it, part of standard negotiations with carriers. That said, replacing a defective phone is generally very easy, but with the EVO, the way it's flying off the shelves, it's not easy to get ahold of one.
Here's the problem: if a store gets ten preorders, they might get five extra phones. When those phones come in, EVERYONE who missed out before KNOWS it, because they've been asking all week, and they show up bright and early. Things can get a little hectic. If you had one set aside for exchange, oftentimes not ALL of the employees are aware (unfortunately, this sometimes happens), and said employee sees a phone and sells it. It's a risk you take with a phone like that; I personally will never buy a phone in its first batch partially because of that exact issue.
What you need to do if contact the store you bought it at, tell them to take down your name and number on a large piece of paper, and write "HOLD EVO FOR EXCHANGE" on it in huge letters. Ask them to inform EVERY employee so there can be no mistakes. That way, when the phones come in, they can physically put it aside (hide it if necessary) and call you so you can do the swap at your leisure.
Some stores just don't do many wireless exchanges, so they space things off, I'm sad to say. Sorry you've had such a miserable experience so far.

Mostly just funnin' with ya... you'll notice in my signature that I own an HD2 as well (Telstra ATT 3G). Running an ENERGY ROM on it and love it as well. Problem for me is that WinMo has run its course and I really like Android. At the end of the day they are both nice phones, perhaps a small nod to the HD2 for design, but not enough to keep me away from the EVO.

Nexus One - Coolest Androind Phone, One Year Old

Why does this phone have to be so cool? So many features most android phones nowadays don't have. Multi-color trackball, LED notification, sexy design... Gosh why does it have to be one year old I have a samsung vibrant, and while people say it is better, I disagree completely. I am hoping to pick a Nexus One up on craigslist for 180 (good deal?). Don't care what people think, this phone is rad.
HTC, Please make the Nexus 3, and please make it like the original Nexus. Beleive it or not, some people do want a multi-color trackball and LED notification. I would get the Samsung Nexus S, too bad it is too plasticy and is missing key features from the first Nexus.
Anyone else agree with me?
I agree completely.
Yea I completely agree ...
The trackball is one of my favorite features...
plus it feels to sturdy and it can handle a good beating!
I used to love watching the nexus videos on utube .... the nexus S came with nothing much.... no trackball and cheap plastic ...
It's annoying HTC doesn't put the trackball on any other phones now. I know a lot people don't want it, but I would love to have it Imagine the Sensation with the Trackball
I love my Nexus One so much I have no idea what my next phone would be. What I'd really like is for my next phone to be identical to my current N1 but with updated specs. It's now 1 1/2 years old now and still going strong.

I like the Nexus One is a very solid device here are things I hate:
1. Outdoor visibility screen just doesn't cut it on a sunny day.
2. Screen sometimes just doesn't work (nothing too serious but annoying)
3. Battery just gives up in 8hr (Like most phones )
4. Camera is nothing to die for, my 2008 Nokia takes better pics (personal preference I take alot of Pictures)
5. Internal storage sucks especially if you don't root or use alot of apps
6. Speaker isn't the best either.
I think for 200 buck is a super good device but you can find a G2x for 350 or less might be a worth it of a big rooter.

I mean do you ACTUALLY hate those things? Or is it just because the phone is dated and there is a newer (better?) standard?
Also, at this point, I'm not even hoping for a trackball-- I'd settle for an optical trackpad (if they'd even give us that; notice how newer phones *cough sensation* don't even have that?)!!
Although, a prominent and customizable multicolored LED is still an absolute must, whether it be around the trackball (g2) or separate from (i don't like that little tiny green hidden dot hidden in the speaker grill of the sensation- it's not noticeable enough.)
nexus 3 by htc..
second gen snapdragon
everything that the n1 has
qwerty keyboard
physical buttons + call/end-call buttons + camera shutter button
now that would be something..

Those are my main issues but I really really hate the memory space, battery and screen visibility especially on a sunny day.
Don't forget the Antenna. It sucks also. In my office I get the worst reception out of everyone. Overall I like the N1 alot and plan on getting the N3 when it comes out.
I get the best reception in my office, which I like to remind the fruit phone users about... xD
Reception is based on so many things through, that it's hard to pin point the real problem...

Well HTCs antenna technology sucks compare to Nokia and other companies. Having a HD2 with horrible antenna issues trying different radios/fimware/updates etc nothing help the poor HD2. the HTC wing way back in 2006 same issues and now the Nexus One has a decent antenna but my Nokia E73 gets solid 3g where my Nexus one fails miserably.
I love the trackball. At least the LED notification part. It's awesome to know if I have a text or a email just by glancing at my phone.
Too bad the Nexus 3 (Nexus 4G also) is going to have no front buttons at all, haptic or trackball.

Most likely the next Nexus. ICS will most likely get rid of all hardware buttons, like a honeycomb interface.
The texture of the Nexus One is the best. I dropped it plenty of times, forgot the phone in a washing machine once, had to replace the power source for it and didn't get the case to completely close. Yet, I'm still sticking around with it. Hopefully Google will do something right for Nexus 3 and get a similar phone out.

That's a Nexus S
I have had myN1 since the day it was released but it was replaced under warranty with a refurb a year later. I love the phone and haven't yet found one I would upgrade for but I do have the following issues:
1. The touch on the screen is still erratic making typing much harder than it should. I often have to power the phone off and on again to get it to register properly
2. My pictures, even on the replacement phone, still have a pinkish tinge to them. I am not sure why.
3. The power button is a bit flaky. Mine failed after the warranty had expired (of course) and so it cost me $55 to get it repaired.
I am hoping the N3 will be as good as the N1 but fix all those ills and be faster and more robust.
The amount of unofficial (and official for that matter I guess) support is what has made this phone amazing for 1.5 years for me. The screen sucks outside, and if I change between E and 3G anywhere in town while calling it is an auto dropped call, but there is not another phone that I've seen that's remotely tempted me. It has definitely been sturdy, dropped it so many times and only a slight nick on the top (no case or screen protector). And I still get questions from people when they notice its a N1, always with the follow up that they wish they had one.
I got the N1 when it first came out, rooted and installed CM right away. Been using CM since.
But lately, the phone is starting to show its age. I don't know if it's the phone or CM7 but it's been acting up more and more lately. I'm getting tired of it.
First is the multi-touch or lack thereof. I didn't care when I first got it but now, with more games available on Android, it's becoming a real problem.
Second is the random "crashing" where the screen would go black and the only way to see anything is hitting the menu button or go back and forth. Or just restart the phone to clear the problem. Really? is this windows or something???
Maybe it's CM7 maybe it's my phone but I can't wait to upgrade. Too bad there aren't anything good out there right now.
I really wish the Nokia N9 supports Android.

Is this a common problem with the N1? Because I've honestly never encountered this even once with 2 N1s.
I wish a new Nexus would keep the trackball, but they could update it to a virtual trackball like the Desire/Droid Incredible, but add a multicolor ring light around it. I think that would look pretty darn cool.
I'm having trouble sticking to android I love the features, apps etc but I been so paranoid of just buying a new android phone and a better one comes out a month after just sucks. I'm holding my money until I see the Nexus 3

Saying goodbye to my HD2

There comes a time where one must say goodbye to a dear friend.
Today, I'm saying goodbye to my HD2.
After being on the phone with T-mobile because the digitizer in my HD2 had died. T-Mobile had offered me a chance to get another device. So I said yes wondering what horrible phone they were going to offer me.
They gave me the option of either getting another HD2, or replacing it for free (no new contract) with an LG G2x. That news sat in the pit of my stomach while he explained to me what the LG G2x had over the HD2.
I told the man to make a note on the account and that I was going to call back later to inform them of my decision. So I did a little soul searching by going over to the G2x forums and found that the development community for the G2x is sparse, but I could get CM7 and MIUI.
Here I am just thinking it over, and I finally decide to call to replace the phone. I called and asked for it to be replaced for a G2x...
After I hung up the phone I asked myself what have I done, It was like I had abandoned my best friend, And I felt miserable for the rest of the day.
The next morning I heard the doorbell ring, so I got up and got my package from the UPS man. Opened it up and the G2x wasn't even in a retail package. I felt as though this was an insult to me but I opened up the box that the phone was in and I saw the slab of glass behind the plastic of the package it came in.
The phone was just like the HD2 beside it. Similar in size, weight, and feel. I transferred my SD and sim card over from the HD2 to the G2x and tuned it on. The G2x responded in excitement, Finally awaking from its sleep. I played with the G2x trying to accustom to the smaller screen and the narrow feel of the phone.
When I finished playing with it I turned to my HD2 and went to the task of putting my friend into his box. It felt like as if I was lowering a casket into its grave. I didn't want to bear with the feeling anymore so I closed up the box and tried to forget about it, But I couldn't. And here I am Writing this Quasi-Eulogy thinking to myself, if what I did was the right choice.
For those of you who got up to reading here I thank you, I needed to write this and somehow express my feeling. I loved the HD2 it was my pride and joy, the source of so much happiness and anger at times. Think what you will but the hd2 was a brother to me, and thats how I would like to remember it as.

wdave im with you on this one. My TMOUS HD2 digitizer died also, so i was offer a new HTC HD7, that i received yesturday. That was my only option or keep the phone and fix it myself. My contract ends in 3 months. So i decided to get the HD7 then will sell it and buy another new HD2. In my opinion you did a wrong choice and letting your best friend go and not getting another HD2.
G2x is complete junk phone

What would make you say that, The G2x in use is much faster in use then the Hd2 when I had CM7 installed.
The build quality isn't HTC solid, but it is better put together then I imagined.
The quasi curved screen at the edge makes for an interesting feel to it. But I do miss the HD2 and being able to flash Sense if I got bored of standard android.
At Wdave, I feel you all the way man. I have moved on to my next device the HTC Sensation and my HD2 still works fine and I could sell it for a nice little profit if I wanted to. But my HD2 is something I hold very close to me. It as you said has giioven me moments of great joy and pain. It was my first smart phone and the whole reason I found XDA. I will never ever ever get rid of my HD2. I will probably will it to a device museum when I die .

Respect
My feelings with you brother! i gave my HD2 to a friend to fix a problem but he couldnt(im out of warranty) now im thinking to get something like the HD2 maybe HD7s or Titan (im without my HD2 over 2 weeks and it feels so empty)
Aww, nice story
you are aware that the HD2 Digitizer had this habbit of popping out?
Bottom right corner of the device i believe, apparrently the glue has a habbit of seperating and that can lead to the phone not applying as much preasure on the cable inside, which can mean it pops out. (one of the reasons the power button can feel less responsive too)
Course it could equally be buggered as happens sometimes
If my HD2 ever died, i think id set it on top of a rocket and have it blown to pieces high in the sky, kind of a fair well bang, anything less would be a bit of a let down to a device thats already a legend.

Thats my belief aswell, except I had to place my HD2 in a cardboard coffin
I'm now looking on ebay and craigslist for an HD2 I just want one again for some reason.
God, I am not quite sure if the phone is really what we are talking about right now. The life is about something totally different. I kinda feel bad for you. Not because your phone has been replaced but because your life values are just sad.
i love mine... i hope they have something much better for tmobile before it dies...

oh come on, thats a bit harsh, most folk are now very reliant on phones for all sorts, when they die it can be a royal pain in the arse, some of us have had the HD2 from the get go, many of us have helped contribute to what it is now, there is a lot of history there, so slap all that together and its quite reasonable to expect people to "like" their HD2, would i actually launch my phone up on a rocket, no, although it might be quite fun for the kids with a education point of view!
I happen to quite like my HD2... Took it to a party on Saturday, showed my friends Mango and Android running on it and they regretted ever buying an Iphone. I had an Iphone to play with for a week, couldn't wait to get back to my HD2. So overall it is a great device and I don't regret having it, nor am I looking to replace it at the moment.
In fact, I have parts for another HD2 that are waiting for the main board. So if any of you with broken digitizers, LCDs or broken anything are replacing their phones and would like to part with one CHEAPLY - PM me, it will be greatly appreciated. Doesn't have to be a whole device, even just the main board will do. If T-Mobile - even better, but not too fussed.
If the phone is under a year old and is fairly good condition ship it back to HTC for warranty. Warranty doesn't necessarily have to be through T-Mobile. Just make sure you restore it to it's original state before sending it and the only cost you'll have will be the shipping cost to HTC somewhere in Texas.
The HD2 was definitely one of the most underappreciated phones of all time. I don't plan to ever give mine up, it's the best phone I've ever had. I'll be getting a Hercules when it comes out but I'll never say goodbye to my baby, lol... More like smell ya later The Hercules/GSII is the only worthy upgrade to this phone that I've seen so far. I had a sensation for a couple of months but it really wasn't much of an upgrade to be honest. Smaller screen, craptastic bluetooth, bad battery life, etc. I ended up selling it & going back to my HD2.
