It seems like there are threads on release dates for many countries except the U.S! So this thread is for people with any information on the release date in the states. =)
I hear ya, I'm am so ready to buy this phone... now if t-mobile usa would speed up the process a bit I could quit driving my wife crazy surfing for anything related to the GS2
What we need to do is to create an online group for wives of phone addict xda members who can't stop researching new devices and roms. Then, they'll spend all day on that forum and won't notice we're ignoring them. My wife just doesn't understand that I NEED this phone on T-Mobile.
I hope you guys get it soon... just like us up north here in canada... but as for tmob getting it... the current international version doesn't have AWS support so that may hold it up a tad for them... just like WIND here... hope that doesn't burst a bubble... and if you already knew that... sorry!
This guy will do T-Mobile 3G, cough cough, 4G? It's a plus device?
It's looking likely that T Mobile USA won't release the SGS2 until sometime in July. With the Sensation release looking likely for June 8th, they need time to maximize its sales before releasing another high end phone. I just don't know if I can wait. I might jump on the G2x or the Sensation.
I may have missed it, but is AT&T going to be getting this phone?
I keep hearing about tmobile but no AT&T talk. If not then i am going to be very very sad.
to my knowledge AT&T's bands are supported on the international version and as a result if carriers are smart and release the actual model and don't demand variants then you should be in the clear

That's really ****ty if they hold it off till July considering the rest of the world get's it in about a week or two.
I'm really hoping that information about its release date will come soon. If US carriers don't get it soon, I'm going to have to buy the international version.

Indeed. I'm ready for one, NOW, to use with T-Mobile. Group buy, perhaps?
It's not unlikely that all major US carriers (and some minor ones) will get variants of the SGS2, though the timing is very uncertain (there have been NO credible stories about precise targets, with the only semi-official statement indicating that Fall is most likely for its first appearance).

I'm almost positive the SGSII will be available on all carriers it's just a matter of timing on the release just like it's predecessor =).
Well, a while ago from that leaked verizon "phone schedule" the SG SII was slated for sometimes in May. Now how long into may or if it gets released is the question. Right now I'm looking to upgrade to a smartphone and grandfather in.
So far Galaxy S 2 is looking pretty sweet and I want it

wasn't that a 1st of April joke/hoax?
AT&T Infuse announced in Jan 2011 is about to be released sometime in MAY, and it is an AT&T exclusive (does not need to stand out by definition).
With the SGS2, the 4 majors would want to customize the phone to stand out from the others, so I would expect even longer delay between the announcement (March) and release.
And now we hear Sammy has SGS3 for the Fall.

Well so far, all the phones on that list have been released at about the right time :O, so not really sure if it's april fools joke. The list had specific dates for all the other phones except for instance bionic/galaxy s 2, where it said "May" for their releases.
I'm hoping for the may release so I can get grandfathered in with the Galaxy s 2 !!!!!! *crosses fingers**

and that is exactly why I created that thread about SGS3, but people are just laughing there
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049529
Since SGS2 may not even penetrate the market by the Fall of 2011, it is possible the US carriers will just skip SGS2 and go straight for SGS3.
I hope not because then we won't get the SGS2 this fall and will have to wait until February 2012 before the US carriers get around to destroying the device with useless and unwanted carrier changes and blotware and finally release the GS3 to NA that came out in the UK in September lol
I wish Samsung, HTC, Motorola and the other major players would just stand up to the US carriers and say "This device hits the market internationally in May you have until then to do what ever modifications you feel necessary and send the device to us to verify it meets our QA to ensure they don't cut corners to meet the deadline. If you don't have your modifications done by that time you have to release the device the way it was intended free of carrier modifications. If you don't comply with this then you won't get a flagship device that is required to meet your sales goal for the quarter and compete with other carriers that meet these requirements and have our flagship devices available"
How hard would that be, the carriers HAVE to have the newest flagship devices to complete in the high end market if the device manufactures would start throwing their weight around and refuse to release devices to the US market the carriers would have no choice but to back down. Sure that would mean an initial delay in the US for some devices while the carriers cry about not getting their way but eventually they would have no choice but to give in and then then the NA market not only gets all of our future devices in a reasonable time frame they aren't all ruined by the carriers petty attempt to stand out from each other. I don't know about anyone else but personally I would be willing to not have the SGS2 available if it meant I got the SGS3 when it was released in the UK free of carrier modifications and bloatware and that is ultimatly what this would come down to. The NA market misses a generation of top end devices but in return starting with the generation after that we don't have any more of this BS. I can suffer a little in the short term for a worth while long term reward. Plus I would bet money the smaller carriers who are trying to take a chunk out of the big guys market would love the chance to pick up flagship devices that the 3 major carriers missed out on because they wouldn't leave the device alone and just release it so it isn't like the devices would be totally unavailable you could still always get it from say Boost or T-Mobile who are more worried about customer satisfaction than adding bloatware and acting like a petty child who has to try and make his new toy "better" than the other kids or buy the international version and add it to a supported US network like many are doing with the SGS2

I am sensing SUNDAY June 12th AT&T release of Samsung Galaxy Attain (almost 11 months after the Captivate)!!!
How long was it from when they made the announcement last year did the Galaxy S actually go on sale on AT&T?
Here you go, last years dates I posted earlier
kreoXDA said:
Do you guys remember how the first Galaxy was introduced on the 4 carriers last year?
Let me remind you
June 4th - first release in Asia
June 29th - launch party in New York City where it was first announced that 4 models were coming to 4 carriers, with no dates. (+25 days)
Later on, gradually, release dates were being announced about 1-3 weeks prior to a particular release. The phone was released as follows:
T-Mob - July 15th (+41 days)
AT&T - July 18th (+44 days)
Sprint, keyboarded CDMA version - August 30th (+87 days)
Verizon, CDMA version - September 9th (+97 days)
We learned that SGS1 was even coming to the United States 3.5 weeks after the phone was released in Asia.
The quickest provider T-Mob got it almost 6 weeks after the first country.
The slowest provider VZW - 3 months after.
So give this some time, sit back, relax, wait for bug reports from the UK beta testers , and enjoy your fixed (or maimed) version in a few short weeks.
peace

Note the US Launch party last year was 25 days after first international release, and this event is around 25 days after Korea/UK release
lol after dealing with the ATT Craptivate for a year I'll gladly "beta test" the vanilla samsung GS2
good luck with your carrier updates. I'm done purchasing US phones "variants" that force you to use reorient kernels for the Roms.
Thanks for the release date info. Looks like they're following a similar schedule... just bumped ahead 1 month from last year =)
Still, as much as I'd like to wait for a US variant... I don't really want to have to sign a contract to get one, nor do I want to put up with the bloatware and filth they put on the phone. Rooting and flashing ROMs on my T-mobile spec Galaxy S was annoying, having to ODIN back to certain firmwares before being able to flash a new ROM.
And the one question that I'm still wondering... will the US be getting a tegra version? That would suck =(

i've been off contract since Dec. i had originally settled on getting the Infuse when it was first announced but instantly fell in love with the SGS2 and decided to wait. but... i need a new phone NOW. actually i needed a new one 2 months ago but decided to hold strong for the SGS2... but it's come to a point where my current phone is damn near unusable, so i think i'm going to get the infuse when it launches and roll the dice on the sgs2 coming out before the remorse period ends. or failing that just give it back and wait some more for the sgs2 to release.
I think the best option for some of us is to buy the carrier branded version on contract, sell it, and use that money to get the vanilla SGS 2. After dealing with all the Captivate issues as well I'm never buying a carrier branded Android ever again.

not to mention the Craptivate looks ugly as hell and nothing like a SGS
If i was on att there would be no doubt id go with international like you said no waiting for carrier update, no carrier branding and missing hardware features.
I really wish carriers kept the design the same as the international it would be so much easier to update and to port roms

That's one point where you're crazy. The Captivate is the nicest Galaxy S and has a lot less plastic than any other one. Everyone has told me they liked the Captivate over the other Galaxy S variants. I've been very happy with the Captivate, but not as happy about the AT&T branding and waiting for their crap.
I would much rather spend the money and buy the phone unlocked than buy it from ATT.

Only issue I see with this is warranty support. If Samsung US would support a UK model fine, but if it requires international shipping that would give me pause.
What if the US version has NFC? Would that change your mind?
Yes, NFC is useless right now, but wouldn't that at least lower your resell value of the UK version whenever one else in your area has NFC?

Given the fact (I hope) all 4 major carriers are getting it, and AT&T, VZW and T-Mob are in an NFC payment system alliance , the chances of US getting NFC versions are not extremely low

I don't see NFC being that important to me right away. I am guessing by the time it becomes important to me, I will already be looking at another phone.
Also, even though the UK might not be getting the NFC version, you probably will still be able to buy a NFC version unlocked from another country.
Hate to say it... but until the iPhone gets NFC it's not worth worrying about.
Devices still need to be upgraded in stores, airlines, and what not to accept NFC no? The above poster is probably correct, the phones are going to need to be widely available before companies spend the money to upgrade their equipment.

Why, because the iPhone has the market share lead and will dictate what the market will do? No, that's Android.

Wonder what is actually going on? Financial terms, samsung dispute with apple?

That is a ridiculous article based on nothing but the writer's opinions. While there may have been issues with the SGS1 the US carriers made a fortune on it. And keep in mind that carriers could give two craps about handsets. They just use them as bait to get people to sign two-year contracts. VZW, the largest wireless carriers in the U.S., just launched the Droid Charge LTE phone with millions of dollars of advertising support. They wouldn't have done that if they had a beef with Samsung. Same thing for the Infuse on AT&T.
The problem with the SGS2 is that it doesn't support LTE on VZW or AT&T and I think both carriers are looking for that support in their high-end phones. I could see the SGS2 being a 3G phone on VZW being somewhat of an issue. I think the Apple litigation is also causing everyone to drag their feet. No one wants to spend a fortune in advertising and ramp-up fees only to find that the phone will have to be pulled shortly after it launches.

I'd guess that 95% of users are oblivious to which version of OS their phone is running. There's been a bunch of hype about "Gingerbread" being the latest and greatest so I think the average shopper would want it because they heard or read about it. And Samsung's mercenary and would want to push the phone out to get the sales and update it later. I think we'll be able to figure out what caused the delay when the final specs and pricing for each carrier's SGS2 is announced.
According to a report out of Japan, the Sony Xperia Z2 is heading to Verizon. The report states that the Sony D6508 (which is allegedly Verizon's version of the flagship model) had received Wi-Fi certification on March 3rd. The phone will support LTE/CDMA2000/WCDMA/GSM connectivity.
The Sony Xperia Z2 will launch in the second quarter. Surprisingly, it will be a Verizon exclusive.

Verizon sucks for travelers. I have to buy phones abroad to use, because even though i have my Verizon LTE phone, unlocked, S-OFF, rooted and custom, it won't work anywhere bu the US.

Ah I imagine you travel overseas a lot. In that case, I can see why people won't want this. I personally don't travel much overseas unless it's for vacation, which I wouldn't want to be using my phone much for anyway.
I've been on Verizon since forever, and it's rare I get to see them get a phone like this. Verizon is usually the last to get the big name devices (which they've been fortunately changing as of late)

I'm still burned from the "flagship" HTC Thunderbolt which caused me to switch to Verizon in the first place.
I'm an IT contractor, so I do travel outside the US. I've been abroad for 13 months, between working in Antarctica and motorcycling around South America.
I am about to return to the States, and want a modern phone with open developer access and a healthy ROM community. Thunderbolt was great for a while, but died hard due to neglect from HTC and VZW.
I want to jump ship to TMobile and have a phone that will work in Europe, the Americas and Asia. Buying cheap feature phones abroad is for the birds. Though, my cheap ass dual SIM phone for South America has a TV tuner, which is awesome. But, I have been trucking around the Thunderbolt to use only on WiFi.
The US scene of crippled phones by vendor and the culture of lock-in is a serious pet peeve of mine. Sorry if i came in too harshly.
I hope the Z2 has huge success, and good pricing after intro, but I will only get the International version direct from Sony.

Distributing smartphones world-wide is not nearly so simple as simply "following HTC". It's a ton of work and it's a huge investment on the companies part. Sony hasn't bothered with the US market for years now. Recently they release phones in US 4-5 months after the rest of the world and on just T-Mobile, the smallest carrier. For them to do a US release within a reasonable time of the rest of the world and put the on the largest network would be a big change for them. It could be a step into Sony trying to re-enter the US market more aggressively. Which means more competition in the US highend smartphone market and competition = good.
Plus, I'm on Verizon and I like the Z2 much better than the One or S5.
It is imperitave that Sony get the US launch right. No matter how much they talk or boast about how good the phone is, no matter how good the phone might actually be, if they don't get it into the US carriers on time then it's never going to be a force to be reckoned with. The US market is the 2nd largest smartphone market, Sony have been idiots to treat it as 2nd fiddle so far. It's time for them to step up and take the market share away from HTC and Samsung, both of whose offerings this year haven't lived up to expectations. The Z2 would absolutely destroy the HTC One and GS5 if released and marketed properly.
If they screw this up again, then Sony Mobile will stay irrelevant in the large scheme of things.

Well said. The Z2 is very impressive, they made substantial improvements from the Z1. Meanwhile, the S5 and M8 feel like the same exact phones with an upgraded SoC. I think Sony fixing the screen and camera issues on the Z1 and bumping up the specs is an indicator of Sony's desire to enter the US market seriously.

I'm sorry but I to disagree with you. The Xperia Z2 should not be exclusive to one carrier. Look how it turned out for them when they only released phones on AT&T then T-mobile-sales where horrible. If Samsung and HTC can release there flagship phones on all 4 carriers, I believe Sony can to. The reason Sony is having such a hard time penetrating the US market is because of the carriers but I believe thats going to change pretty soon.
I don't think anyone is disagreeing that going exclusively to Verizon would be a bad for Sony. But the ones on Verizon, like myself, are excited we're actually getting the phone when we never thought we'd have the option. I imagine anyone would be just as happy if their preferred carrier got the Z2.

Exactly.
Us vzw customers get shafted left and right. We are limited to phones approved by vzw. After their Galaxy Nexus fiasco, Google didn't trust them with the nexus 4 and 5. We pretty much are stuck with Samsungs and locked up HTCs.
A Sony phone on VZW would be a refreshing alternative to the current Verizon offerings.
I understand that exclusivity would screw over other carriers, and I am in no way saying that other carriers shouldn't have it. All I want is for vzw to offer it.

People are underestimating how difficult it is to release a phone worldwide and how big the risks are. Of course a 4 carrier release is better than 1 carrier. But the point I'm making is that an OEM can't go from doing a US market release 4-5 months after worldwide on the smallest carrier (T-Mobile) to a release on all 4 carriers at the same time as the global market without some steps in between. Releasing the phone on Verizon, the largest carrier, at a similar time as the rest of the world could be a step in that direction. That's why it's good to see Sony doing this because it shows that they could be starting the process of becoming a major player in the US smartphone market. But it will take time and it will depend on many factors. Huge international corporations don't do things lightly.
And you're putting the horse before the cart. Sony isn't having a hard time penetrating the US market because of the carriers it's on. It's actually not having a hard time at all because Sony isn't trying for the US market. It's a low priority for them, which is why they don't bother pushing phones over to the US until months after teh rest of the world. It's not simply laziness, they've chosen to put their resources into other markets, mainly Japan and Europe.
Perhaps the trigger that many are responding to is the perceived excitement for exclusivity to a carrier which is already widely disliked for its imposition of limitations on its customer base. As enlightened technophiles, presumably we promote the widespread dissemination of great technology, especially open technology.
The International version should already support VZW's LTE bands. Legacy CDMA support would require a VZW-specific version, however, if I am not mistaken.
Launch the damn phone unlocked and as capable as possible, and then provide for the stupid American carriers that demand proprietary solutions.
I'm on VZW now, and will jump in a hearbeat when the right phone is available unlocked and precisely without any of the Verizon **** that they insist on including to pollute every product they sell. When asshats like Verizon and Comcast get product exclusivity, we all lose.
This does suck for other users, but I still have unlimited data plan with VZW & happy to get rid of razr maxx hd.

I was in the same situation, coming from the same phone. I bit the bullet and got the one M8 to tide me over.
I walked into the neighborhood verizon and I was about to get the S5 but was already strongly considering the Z2. I spoke with the reps there and they said it's official that it's definitely coming to the US and the last time a Sony rep showed up to their store he told them it was coming to verizon as a exclusive ( there is rep for every manufacturer in these stores ) they were given information on the phone but the date is still elusive.
Verizon sales rep says they are expecting to have them in store within 3 weeks. The amount of information that Verizon has it as a exclusive is over weighing and I'm putting off getting the S5 for getting the Z2

Verizon sales rep says they are expecting to have them in store within 3 weeks. The amount of information that Verizon has it as a exclusive is over weighing and I'm putting off getting the S5 for getting the Z2

That's a crazy amount of specific info you got from your neighborhood vzw reps. Usually they are clueless or unwilling to share any info that's not official.
http://bgr.com/2014/10/30/nexus-6-sold-out-in-google-play-store/
The publication says the Nexus 6 is “huge” for Google’s future in the smartphone company, and the phone is intended to be sold mainly through carriers, rather than on Google Play.

Interesting read if for nothing more than the comments
Dumb. Dumb.
Another great flagship phone that next to no one can buy...instead of by design due to a moronic invite system...this time due to a moronic inventory choice.
Heads are going to roll for this 3 years mess: Today Andy Rubin, co-founder and former leader of Google Inc.’s Android mobile business is leaving Google!
Not sure exact reason but....

How is it moronic if numbers say most will buy through a carrier. Seems like a simple choice to me.

It could be that there is an official agreement to allow carriers to sell most of the devices. Of course, if that were the case they never should have offered a Play Store pre-sale in the first place.
Just seems like a typical BGR article. They're a rag of a site that makes up news
BGR..... I cant even bring myself to click their click bait $*¥+ any more

When Google has a golden opportunity to sell a device that most carriers haven't even listed on their sites yet or formally announced plans to carry, and make money...it is moronic.
Having a flagship device that no one can buy due to your (Google's) idiotic bureaucratic decision making is how to get people who otherwise are your fan base pissed at you...see the idiocy of One+

Its not moronic if that was the condition carriers wanted if they were to carrier the product. I'm pretty sure the men making these decisions know more than the all of us here. Not to mention they have access to numbers and info we don't to make such a decision.

people need to stop crying and just go into their carrier and buy it there. it's not like it isn't the same phone online.

The phone isn't even released yet... People need to calm down. Even IF you were able to preorder it would still have been weeks before you got the phone.

But if everyone calmed down, I'd have nothing to entertain myself with for the next couple of weeks...

Odds are it isn't.
You get some degree of bloat (albeit removable it sounds like) and what is more delayed updates.

tmobile nexus 4 and 5 was the same one from the play store nothing different. it still got the updates from Google. no bloat at all unless Google put it on there. I can't speak about the others. I am buying mine on the 12th from the tmo store and I am sure it will be the same one Google sends out.

This is one of two things I was worried about if I have to pick it up from T-Mo:
- 1) I just want to make sure the updates come from Google and not the carrier (T-Mo in this case). Especially since I will be paying all upfront for it since I am prepaid and don't want to sign up for a post paid plan. There's no sense in me having to wait for an update if I'm not tied to any sort of plan or carrier.
- 2) I would very much rather purchase directly from the Play Store if only for the GREAT 1-year hassle-free warranty coverage they have. I had to do a warranty exchange a few weeks ago on my N5, and whole procedure was absolutely painless. I had my replacement device in-hand the very next day.
So, as much as I would prefer to buy it from the Play Store, if the speculation that the majority of sales will be taking place through the carriers and the supply on the Play Store will be scarce, I would just want the T-Mo phone to be EXACTLY like the one they sell in the Play Store, with no carrier meddling/bloatware.
Google news for us in the uk then as long as there is a decent amount of stock as no carriers have listed it as exclusive to either O2, ee, Vodafone or three afaik

I'm really hoping the same thing doesn't happen in the U.K. with Stock issues
Hopefully its all under control by then, and they just put it on the site for sale and ship the same time as the US

1.) Same freaking phone no doubt about it. Its been said a billion times. Updates from google Tmobile bloat
2.) You get next day shipping with Tmobile if you have their insurance plan which I recommend as it extends it past the 1 year google offers.
