What's the chances of us seeing production for the GS6 anytime after its release date? Only because its rocking the "Exynos processor" which has delayed a couple projects for GS4 and GS5 in previous occasions. And knox is stronger than ever before according to Samsung's MWC presentation..
What are your thoughts on this.. will development be slow as it was on the GS5?
Thanks in advance!

I predict it will take several months after release before we see any AOSP/CM support. Samsung is really bad about releasing firmware documentation as is, the new processor will probably complicate things further. It seems like they don't want people in control of their devices, even going as far as to lock bootloaders...
The AT&T variant of GS5 doesn't have a functional CM yet, so I wouldn't count on it happening anytime soon. I would like the option, but I can live with a debloated TW rom like I have.
Well, I wouldn't really care. Why spend to dollar on cutting edge hardware to put buggy, featureless firmware that isn't optimized for it anyway.

Because that's what makes android open source, customizable, don't you wanna be able to under/overclock your kernel to save battery? Featureless? Ill take the privilege of being able to customize any day over gimmicky features[emoji110]
slim with aosp based roms. you should be able to get stockish based roms and kernels though.
With exynos, i think not

Are there any large minorities?
Also here on XDA those who want to hack, tweak and mod their phones are the majority. And there always were manufacturers who were willing to produce very good quality phones that were relatively easy to unlock and flash custom recoveries. And they sometimes also used quite open architecture, like the Qalcomm SOCs.
Samsung was one of these, but lately the whole knox=warranty business started to make it a lot harder to root phones. Although those who didn't care for their knox warranty flags, were able to flash custom roms early. (I waited the whole year before I tripped my knox)
But with the S6 they changed three things at the same time: brought back Exynos, removed the external sd card, and sealed the battery in. For the first thing, it's Qualcomm who the real cuplrit is, because they mucked up their 64bit processor. But the rest is Apple's fault, including then need to produce a 64 bit processor.

Stock TW with stock kernel is typically more stable and optimized for performance and battery life anyway. Maybe your argument would have made a point 3 or 4 years ago when Samsung really didn't have all that much experience creating proprietary software that performed well and is optimized. This was back in the S2 and S3 era.
Things are different nowadays and if you really don't know what you're doing, all these options you can tweak can really have an adverse side effect on your day to day usage of the phone.

rooting phone and modifying it doesn't always mean u want AOSP roms , specially after xposed framework came over i totally stopped flashing roms and saved the hassle that come with flashing roms and wiping and ****....
sheep? yeah im sheep cuz i want to use my phone with all its functions not flashing buggy roms on my phone that will make lose 80% features of the phone especially cam and speaker and battery optimizations and samsung addons that come with TW , so yeah good luck with buggy AOSP
After seeing all the good things this phone has going for it from the fingerprint scanner, speed of the UI, camera improvements and the new theme engine(that Avengers theme looks nice by the way) there is no way I'm missing out on all that by flashing aosp on it. The funny thing is I used to run aosp exclusively on all my Samsung phone through the S4. The S5 is the first Samsung phone that I've run Touchwiz on 99% of the time. The only the I want on the S6 is root+adaway+maybe some slight debloating.

Thanks, but unfortunately the Moto Maxx is verizon only [emoji20] and the Moto X 2014 is a drawback for me because of the battery.. 2400 mah battery... But i was once in the checkout page for the moto x. 2014 edition 32 gb, i even got accepted for the motorola credit.. but then i saw the M8 on swappa.com for $460(Brand new sealed) and it was a no brainer..but cm12 on the m8 has speaker distortion issues.... I just bought an Atrix, and I thought I would post a little review because in all my research before I bought the phone, I did not find one which said what I needed to hear. Hopefully this is useful and objective.
I have owned a OG Droid, Samsung Fascinate, Nexus S, Galaxy S, and this Atrix so I feel like I have good grounds for comparison.
Out of the box...
The Good: The phone's hardware is top notch. The specs are awesome.
The Bad: The Motorola Atrix in completly stock form (the one I bought anyways) is very buggy and laggy. When I first unboxed it and was doing my initial set up and installing a few apps, a number of different programs forced close. The whole experience was slow and frustrating. I would rate Moto Blur as simply horrible and disgusting.
The fact that Motorola was able to take a tegra 2 powered phone with 1GB of DDR2 ram and make it run choppy is beyond me.
With that being said... If you don't know how to or do not plan on rooting, or modifying the software on your phone, I would highly recommended you avoid the Atrix.
If you are a fan of tinkering and modifying, then the Atrix is a great choice.
I have only noticed lag for the first 15-30 seconds after power on. None after that...
Motoblur means nothing to me, and doesn't really seem to slow down my phone. I had lunch with a bunch of other android users, and they were all impressed by the atrix' snappiness...
One thing I remembered when I had the atrix was unlocking the phone and using it was extremely laggy and slow for the first few seconds. I confirmed this with 2 other store demos. If you swipe your finger or do the pattern unlock, try bringing down the notification bar immediately. It'll be slow and choppy but if you wait a couple seconds and then try again, it'll be fine. Always annoyed me at how LONG it took to unlock the phone and get it going compared to every other android phone I've owned.
I have had no issues with performance at all on my device. It's lightning quick. The most impressive for me wasn't the CPU speed, but the file access speed. That thing installs, uninstalls, and loads applications retarded fast. They made a good choice of hardware right there.

The only lag I've noticed is for a few seconds after the initial boot up, which is understandable. To say it is very laggy and buggy is crazy. Perhaps the unit you had was defective.

Sounds like you may have a buggy device... Ive had three of them so far (one was replaced due to what I perceived to be a faulty battery and my wife also uses one). And I've not seen any of the lag you're talking about...
If it was a big enough occurance don't you think you would've read about it on these forums? This place is packed with android super users... no ones having problems like that ...

.... the fingerprint scanner makes it real quick to unlock the phone.... and it's not easy enough to be accidentally pocket-unlocked like some other unlocking systems i've seen.... such as i think HTC's, where you just slide the one thing down. Hell, with the one pair of shorts i have, i was actually able to see the screen on my iPhone 4 when i had it, and unlock it THROUGH THE SHORTS if i wanted to.
And i think it'd be expected for things to be going a tad slow as soon as it's woken up. Look at computers. Whether it's booting... sleeping... hibernating.... if you expect to be able to do something without any form of lag the second either of those are recovered from, you'd be sorely mistaken.

The Atrix is fine for people who like to tinker. The only thing we can't do is overclock our processors and change ROMs every 3 seconds. Other than that I have free tethering, no ads, root, no bloatware, free webtop thanks to a hack and a pseudo-ROM/theme loaded. Yeah too bad I can't tinker with it. *eyes rolling*

i have an atrix, i guess we just have different opinions on tinkering...i do like the change roms often and be able to upgrade to the newest android version without having to wait for the manufacture. theres so much more you can do when you open up the kernel, most of the bugs that people are having would be solved if the devs can get at the kernel. Why do you think developers are leaving the Atrix? there's only so much you can do with a locked bootloader. i never said i hated the phone(i wouldnt of bought it if i did) i just dont think it's a good phone for modding but hopefully that will change...

It's still in Beta at 7.2 now. However I believe the webtop that was removed in the previous version was the hack to make it work with just an HDMI cable so you don't need the dock to make it work. I am on 7.2 and I have the webtop hack installed and it works perfect on my TV through just the HDMI cable.
I am really enjoying the ATRIX. I was starting to get a little burnt out on installing new ROMS every couple days or weeks. This is however my first Android phone...coming from the WinMo forums...This phone is like night and day compared to my old Tilt 2.

Welcome Brother I'm in the same boat =P tilt 2 to atrix is an amazingly wonderful jump ~!
I came from a captivate where roms are readily available. I enjoyed flashing and it was awesome to see how a device can mature. But the kernel development is where things truly shine. But even after all the flashing I just felt like things didn't quite work right. I thought it was the fact that 99% of the roms were based off the international galaxy s.
I love my atrix. Everything works. The battery life is awesome. The phone really flies. Motoblur sucks but its been taken care of. As long as we get more roms ill be happy. Unlocked bootloader would be nice but I don't see it happening

Honestly, I'd like to see some kernel development.
And now I feel like a jerk. :/
Yeah I'm patiently waiting but there's not a lot of action going on. We need more devs on board to help each other out. Wish I could code to help.
Losing the stock apps is a problem for most people that bought this tablet though
If I ever get the time (unlikely...) I might take a crack at Omni.
I'm kind of waiting to see how the new Nexus rumors pan out. If the next Nexus tablet has a K1, that'll make Android L a lot easier.
There's also, as some people said, the fact that there are quite a lot of stock features of the device that are actually quite nice. There's also the fact that the stock firmware is quite clean, reducing the need to tweak it.
Some of the stock apps really don't want to play nicely, I've tried installing the controller app though adb with necessary lib for the controller recently but had an issue with an incompatible user. I looked through the file that has all of that info Haven't had a ton of time to flip between stock/cm and progress any more than that.

Tbh, I think we're lucky to have the roms that are currently being developed. The SHIELD isn't exactly the most popular tablet and with the Nexus coming everyones gonna jump on that. The roms we have now are pretty darn decent and the dev's are doin good work. We shouldn't rush them or ask more from them, and the tablets still fairly new. I'm sure by the end of the year we'll have plenty of things to play with, hopefully a good kernel as well!
What ROM's are you interested in?
Close to stock but ability to over clock, some more mods, improvement in audio. Maybe a way to improve GPU performance.

There's a slight chance I might take a crack at a kernel with some small fixes (such as my micro idle accounting patch for conservative...), but I can assure you, you'll never see overclock coming from me. Current devices are all thermally limited as it is, overclock is pointless, it just makes you hit the thermal barriers faster. It's also the #1 reason why many OEMs try to voice your warranty the moment you unlock the bootloader.

Have to agree too. Overclocking is pointless. Last time I needed it was for my S2 years ago.
I'm buying the controller this weekend and reverting to a stock ROM, I'm guessing at this point I'm in the same position as most owners where unless stock apps can run on AOSP ROMs, I'll be sticking with stock.
Which means my only want then would be a nicely optimised stock ROM, maybe a theme or two and a tweakable (not overclocking) kernel.
And before anyone says it, I do not EXPECT this or demand this, it'd just be nice

I agree as well Overclocking is really pointless. A kernel with fastcharge would be nice though.
Currently have a Moto X Dev Edition, bought it back almost a year ago I believe. I like the phone but the camera sucks and the battery could be better. It's super slick and smooth, rarely have any issues with it except for Bluetooth from time to time. But I'm also already noticing a little bit of screen burn-in, and I'm not on my phone 24/7 either. I've always questioned Motorola's AMOLED screen quality, I had an S3 and S4 and those screens were great. Plus I miss having expandable memory so I don't have to stream all of my 20+ GB of music through Google Play Music...
Long story short, it's time to replace the X. I thought about the Turbo but the lack of voice/data usage, the marginally better camera, and reports of poor wifi reception are keeping me away, not to mention the brightness also is subpar. After having the S4 and all it's laggy problems, I said no more Samsung phones, but it seems the S5 is greatly improved. My choices right now are the S5, G3, the new Sony whateveritis, and possibly the Note 4 but that's pushing the size limit a little bit.
Thoughts?

Alright, I don't want to open a new thread but I do have a couple more questions related to the original topic.
Is the S5 still worth buying this late in the game, or do people have a better suggestion for a device? I tried the Note 4, too damn big.
Also, I take it NI2 is the most recent update, and if so can it be rooted successfully at this point?

Is the S5 still worth buying this late in the game, or do people have a better suggestion for a device? I tried the Note 4, too damn big.
Also, I take it NI2 is the most recent update, and if so can it be rooted successfully at this point?

Yep... rooted my N12 and running safe strap. Did it 2 weeks ago brand new S5. Some are holding out for the Nexus 6 as it will have an unlocked bootloader. Thread for rooting is here in the forums. (GUIDE) JTIDLER Under the S5 General area

Hey.
I have SM-N900 with 4.4.2 and rooted.
My phone start to be **** and work with lags so..... its for wipe and install the new update.
so I saw this rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...s-android-development/mar-10-pekakas-t3051018
and he looking good and everything
but he say that I need to have 5.0 first to install it..
how ?
and why every dev hate the Exynos ? no love for him...
sometime I want to install CM but.... the pen will stop work and more
Just go here, http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-N900/
Download a 5.0 ROM, and flash it via Odin. If you find a ROM for your region then obviously download that. Done. Then you can flash any custom ROM you want.
Why Exynos hate? Well I am an idiot and as far as I know devs need to spend quite a lot of more time developing for Exynos than Snapdragon, and obviously they choose to do the easier work.
And a friendly suggestion, please STAY AWAY from those AOSP based ROMs. They will make the phone half disabled, I am just coming from one just yesterday, and one more thing, they aren't that much smoother than TouhcWiz Lollipop either, which was my main reason to flash such a ROM, and literally waste a full two hour! Call it LagWiz, CrapWiz, BloatWiz, whatever the heck you want, I am not going anywhere near those AOSP things ever again.

ok I understand now how to install 5.0. thanks
but why to stay away from AOSP ?
I saw this " https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYofb7zYrt4 " and his phone work great and fast also his pen work..
and what do you mean half disabled ? you talk about features of samsung ?
Seriously I can't stand my phone anymore with lags and full RAM use for unknown reason ( and even I use Greenify / Wanam / bootmanager )
still he work like crap and after restart he start to work good again for like... a few hours or days
man I really need to change
Well several number of reasons really. The deal breaker for me was there was no option to change the display mode! I mean I am talking about the different display profiles, Cinema, Adapt, Professional etc, I couldn't choose that, and I was stuck with the default Adaptive one, which is way too over saturated! Then there are the S Pen things, this and that software is there, but nothing could be as smooth as having Action Memo merged with S Note, on which I heavily depend. Then there is the camera, and the lack of 60 frames video. Also the camera photo quality in general, is it comparable to TouchWiz's stock camera? I doubt!
I was ready to compromise on all of these, but that lack of display profile thing was impossible for me to bear.
Honestly there is very minimal lag with TouchWiz 5.0, OF3, on my N9005. But I think bloody Samsung didn't implement the TW on Exynos as good as they did on SD devices, so maybe you indeed face some lag issues. I myself couldn't bear the KitKat or Jelly Bean or whatever the heck it was on my I9500, lag, bugs, what not, but TouchWiz Lollipop is an entirely different thing. I also don't see any low RAM issue at all!
In any case, if you want to try out some AOSP stuffs, do that, it's your phone after all...

For people like you that note with its bloatware is meant for, aosp based roms are never a thing for you.
When I bought note 3 i did it for its hardware specs and really hated tw. Never gonna back to that crap.
What you miss we others that love cm find a way to live better with than living with tw.
LOL I always see these things/debates posted of not using AOSP or TouchWiz... it's really a preference... but here's the thing, TW based phones are usually more stable. The only reason being is, they have less changes to the core of the OS. AND you don't have to use TW (at least not the slow ugly launcher). TW is crap, you can use another launcher and debloat - to have something purring. AOSP do something similar, but of course it's not as stable --- but this is more developer dependent. Some are better than others, some load it with their own bloat/crapwear (because they think it's what others will want).
In conclusion... lol make your own conclusion. Be sure to read the forums (not just first and last pages) for any problems on the rom you choose. I would highly recommend something that has minimal changes, but lets you add or remove what you want.
Good luck!

Yeah thanks lad, and for kids like you CM/ AOSP or whatever they wanna call it is as overhyped as it is. A ROM where bug list is lengthier than feature list, and some people still talk

Let me be the judge of that. I will say whatever I want, whenever I want, wherever I want. Deal with that.
You are what, 24 now? Talk when you are in your mid 30s, maybe by then you could gain some IQ and be a little practical, and the hype/ brainwash adrenaline will settle down.
hello dear xda community!
it has been a while since i was last here.
i owned a gs2 but made the move to ios with iphone 5 and currently use iphone 6.
I am considering buying note 4 (c variant with exynos)!mostly for the great screen ,battery life and not overheating( almost all other androids can cook your hand)
i lurked around here to do some digging and i keep seeing members having big problems with battery drains, overheating and slow down...( i will be skipping on note 5 as it will not come to europe and mostly because of no removable battery-micro sd)
have i missed something? is the big res scree bogging down the phone?
owning an iphone, performance is a given for me.
Please share your honest views since you own the device and help me make the move!
got sick of same damn thing and restrictions (ios)
My best advice to you would be stick with iOS. I own Note 4. Previously owned lots of flagship android phones and before that iPhone 3GS, 4S and 5S. I will shift to 6S when it will be available in my country because I am tired of bloated SW solutions from big firms and sick of flashing custom roms that almost never match the performanco of camera with stock. iOS is still the best SW you can get and I will stick with it for a while.
Regarding android IMHO Note 4 is the best you can hope taking other 2015 flahships in mind that are not worth the upgrade specialy with SD 810, no microSD and non-replacable battery that is getting smaller and smaller despite constant *****ing about it's insufficiencuy. With latest 5.1.1 it is realy fast, takes great pictures and battery life is awsome. I have no problems with it and till now it is as close to iOS experience as it gets.

For the OP!
Stick whit IOS my friend ....
My 910f is realy awsome whit 5.1.1, no overheat, no lag and superb battery, but ios much much better in stabiliti and before android 5.1.1 it has better performance.
you see, the thing is..what made me consider moving was the hideous battery life (iphone battery is epic bad-like..bards would sing of its loussiness).
and couple more every day stuff that really halt your schedule( try attaching two different file types-say 1 xls+1pdf on same mail in ios)
i guess i was hoping that it would be better with note 4, but from what you guys say it lacks stability on a very profound level..

hi ,
i guess there always 2 sides to a story . ?
I have a Note2 , Note3, and ... Note4 ( ........cannot say anything much, about Note5 ..!!)
All my devices battery ( removable ) life is good/acceptable , no overheating , smooth running and customized to my liking !!!!!! This is what i want and enjoying it .!!
I do not own a Iphone and thus cannot say much about it .!!
(Yes ,i have "played around " a few times ,with a Iphone in the phone shops and know its overall feel and workings )
Everytime i just put it down and say no i am happy with my Note4 .
All i can say is , in the end it is "what you want from your device...its you choice ."
So is it an an option ..... to have/own both ?
i want freedom of choice, ( customize etc ) and cannot see myself been tied down .
My message is only ,there nothing "wrong " with Note4
Hardware ,specs , removable battery and to do real multitasking on a device ? ...etc
Also i am on Android v 5.1.1 and device working very, very smooth .No issues .
However i have noticed some forum members have /had certain issues
good luck with your choice .
post entry
my observation of reading post and " my opinion" ,
regarding battery drainage in Note 4 is that a some members have either
3rd party apps or wrong settings or some" mod/theme " on phone responsible for this ( yes, i know not always ) eg facebook, whatsapp , gps location enable ,data always on ,etc... in some setting etc ( battery drainers ) or just badly coded apps or games .sucking away on battery.I had Note4 since October 2014 and had odd battery drain and always ( when investigating ) found 3rd party app or mod eg Xposed framework or module etc responsible for this .
Bottom line ,
is you only read mostly in threads, when members have a "problem " and hardly read post of members that is happy with performance/etc of device ?
good..this is what i want to hear..opinions based on real owner experiences!
just one more question!
is it true that since knox , i cannot root the device without it being permanently recorded? i mean, i remember being to erase such things on gs2 with stuff like triangle away app.. i dont care for flashing roms, rather than using my paid titanium app, adaway, root explorer and be able to freeze bloatware.

hi,
yes, thats overall true eg. if you use dev @ chainfire CF auto root it will trip Knox.(this CF auto root method, is what i used overall. except in Android v5.1.1 it does not work so i used another method ) However you do get certain root
methods that won't trip Knox.
Don't ask me what method as i really was never interested in rooting this way.
My personal opinion of Knox is.. i see it as a "bogey man" it does not worry me as i got no interest in Knox features. .. or the attitude... "o what is Samsung warranty going to say.?"
That said...
I do however respect other members view on Knox.!
I wanted to enjoy my user experience and rooted my device way back in October 2014... never looked back.
My viewpoint is,
If something "happens" well then it "happens" an i will deal with it accordingly or get another device.
I just wanted you to get my viewpoint over, that overall Note4 is a very, very capable device..good at multi tasking, good battery use (overall) no overheating issues and very smooth and fast (just tweak right)
Good luck with your choice
to be honest as long as it works and battery performs , i am happy camper..i am familiar with androids plus and minuses..
I wouldn't get it now. On its stock rom the dpi is way too high, everything is so big on the screen and there is no added real estate from a phone such as the S6. As for performance I've never been happy (N910F) until 5.1, but on 5.1 I can't use per app dpi. Do not throw your money at Samsung, opt for a Moto (or even the new Sony Z5 series), they're much more consistent performers. You could even wait for the new Nexus 5 or 6 coming out next month which will have biometric sensors. The one on the Note 4 sucks haha.
If you want to use the Samsung apps then stay with Touchwiz and root it, I would currently recommend using this ROM
I know you said that you are not into flashing ROMs but I would recommend that you give CM a chance or if you want extra personalization then try other custom roms.

i'd have no problem with flashing but custom roms never really get the camera app right or work well with ril files etc..
CM is very far from my taste although it has a sink ful of features.
i am almost set with giving up the iphone 6 for note 4.
just gonna wait till ios 9 gets previewed on wensday.
cant wait for a note 4 like battery, coming from i6.

I was not really happy with my Note 4 N910C until 5.1.1 came around.
More happy when I installed a stock pre-rooted ROM from Wanam and ultimate kernel then installed Note 5 theme and multi dpi for app.
My phone is very fast now, great battery too!

that i could do!!
without the changed kernel..no matter how good, once tinkered there always is a bug hiding..would the stock pre-rooted triger the knox counter?
