Can we expect more roms anytime soon? - Shield Tablet General

I would love to see more roms and for this beautiful piece of hardware
Sent from my unknown using XDA Free mobile app

Honestly, I'd like to see some kernel development.
And now I feel like a jerk. :/

Yeah I'm patiently waiting but there's not a lot of action going on. We need more devs on board to help each other out. Wish I could code to help.
Losing the stock apps is a problem for most people that bought this tablet though

If I ever get the time (unlikely...) I might take a crack at Omni.
I'm kind of waiting to see how the new Nexus rumors pan out. If the next Nexus tablet has a K1, that'll make Android L a lot easier.
There's also, as some people said, the fact that there are quite a lot of stock features of the device that are actually quite nice. There's also the fact that the stock firmware is quite clean, reducing the need to tweak it.

Some of the stock apps really don't want to play nicely, I've tried installing the controller app though adb with necessary lib for the controller recently but had an issue with an incompatible user. I looked through the file that has all of that info Haven't had a ton of time to flip between stock/cm and progress any more than that.

Tbh, I think we're lucky to have the roms that are currently being developed. The SHIELD isn't exactly the most popular tablet and with the Nexus coming everyones gonna jump on that. The roms we have now are pretty darn decent and the dev's are doin good work. We shouldn't rush them or ask more from them, and the tablets still fairly new. I'm sure by the end of the year we'll have plenty of things to play with, hopefully a good kernel as well!

What ROM's are you interested in?

Close to stock but ability to over clock, some more mods, improvement in audio. Maybe a way to improve GPU performance.

Spot on.
I'd love to be able to use themes too, but that means a fully working CM on top of all that.
I don't think it's going to happen

The CM port is pretty darn close to perfect aside from Touch not working after a few hours being locked.

It would be great for someone to make a really customizable ROM for this tablet... but for some reason I just don't see it happening

Close but no cigar!
None of the Nvidia apps work, and I'm guessing that's why most people even got this tablet!
Just encountered the freeze on the latest Carbon too.

In truth, my Droid MAXX has ruined me for ROMS because it's basically stock.
If we could get like an optimized kernel with over clock, I would be super happy.
Now that I've been that guy, I just want to say thank you for the recoveries and all your work. It's super awesome.

That's a problem even on stock.
There's a slight chance I might take a crack at a kernel with some small fixes (such as my micro idle accounting patch for conservative...), but I can assure you, you'll never see overclock coming from me. Current devices are all thermally limited as it is, overclock is pointless, it just makes you hit the thermal barriers faster. It's also the #1 reason why many OEMs try to voice your warranty the moment you unlock the bootloader.

Have to agree too. Overclocking is pointless. Last time I needed it was for my S2 years ago.
I'm buying the controller this weekend and reverting to a stock ROM, I'm guessing at this point I'm in the same position as most owners where unless stock apps can run on AOSP ROMs, I'll be sticking with stock.
Which means my only want then would be a nicely optimised stock ROM, maybe a theme or two and a tweakable (not overclocking) kernel.
And before anyone says it, I do not EXPECT this or demand this, it'd just be nice

You guys are the experts! I'll be happy with whatever I can get.

I just hope that either Nvidia will support the device for a LONG time or we can have some devs that keep supporting the device long into the future. Just in case you guys havnt heard it, Nvidia have said that this device defiantly will be getting android L.

Am I the only one whose gps does not work on custom Roms?!?!!!! All of em gmaps says no gps hardware found. I could probably live with the screen touch issue if GPS worked. Need it for Ingress ?

I just turn off the lockscreen and use Attentive for my lockscreen and I never have that issue. lol.
I agree as well Overclocking is really pointless. A kernel with fastcharge would be nice though.

Review/Warning

I just bought an Atrix, and I thought I would post a little review because in all my research before I bought the phone, I did not find one which said what I needed to hear. Hopefully this is useful and objective.
I have owned a OG Droid, Samsung Fascinate, Nexus S, Galaxy S, and this Atrix so I feel like I have good grounds for comparison.
Out of the box...
The Good: The phone's hardware is top notch. The specs are awesome.
The Bad: The Motorola Atrix in completly stock form (the one I bought anyways) is very buggy and laggy. When I first unboxed it and was doing my initial set up and installing a few apps, a number of different programs forced close. The whole experience was slow and frustrating. I would rate Moto Blur as simply horrible and disgusting.
The fact that Motorola was able to take a tegra 2 powered phone with 1GB of DDR2 ram and make it run choppy is beyond me.
With that being said... If you don't know how to or do not plan on rooting, or modifying the software on your phone, I would highly recommended you avoid the Atrix.
If you are a fan of tinkering and modifying, then the Atrix is a great choice.
I have only noticed lag for the first 15-30 seconds after power on. None after that...
Motoblur means nothing to me, and doesn't really seem to slow down my phone. I had lunch with a bunch of other android users, and they were all impressed by the atrix' snappiness...
One thing I remembered when I had the atrix was unlocking the phone and using it was extremely laggy and slow for the first few seconds. I confirmed this with 2 other store demos. If you swipe your finger or do the pattern unlock, try bringing down the notification bar immediately. It'll be slow and choppy but if you wait a couple seconds and then try again, it'll be fine. Always annoyed me at how LONG it took to unlock the phone and get it going compared to every other android phone I've owned.
I have had no issues with performance at all on my device. It's lightning quick. The most impressive for me wasn't the CPU speed, but the file access speed. That thing installs, uninstalls, and loads applications retarded fast. They made a good choice of hardware right there.

The only lag I've noticed is for a few seconds after the initial boot up, which is understandable. To say it is very laggy and buggy is crazy. Perhaps the unit you had was defective.

Sounds like you may have a buggy device... Ive had three of them so far (one was replaced due to what I perceived to be a faulty battery and my wife also uses one). And I've not seen any of the lag you're talking about...
If it was a big enough occurance don't you think you would've read about it on these forums? This place is packed with android super users... no ones having problems like that ...

.... the fingerprint scanner makes it real quick to unlock the phone.... and it's not easy enough to be accidentally pocket-unlocked like some other unlocking systems i've seen.... such as i think HTC's, where you just slide the one thing down. Hell, with the one pair of shorts i have, i was actually able to see the screen on my iPhone 4 when i had it, and unlock it THROUGH THE SHORTS if i wanted to.
And i think it'd be expected for things to be going a tad slow as soon as it's woken up. Look at computers. Whether it's booting... sleeping... hibernating.... if you expect to be able to do something without any form of lag the second either of those are recovered from, you'd be sorely mistaken.

Sounds like a great comment from a non-Atrix user? Maybe I'm wrong though?
The Atrix is fine for people who like to tinker. The only thing we can't do is overclock our processors and change ROMs every 3 seconds. Other than that I have free tethering, no ads, root, no bloatware, free webtop thanks to a hack and a pseudo-ROM/theme loaded. Yeah too bad I can't tinker with it. *eyes rolling*

i have an atrix, i guess we just have different opinions on tinkering...i do like the change roms often and be able to upgrade to the newest android version without having to wait for the manufacture. theres so much more you can do when you open up the kernel, most of the bugs that people are having would be solved if the devs can get at the kernel. Why do you think developers are leaving the Atrix? there's only so much you can do with a locked bootloader. i never said i hated the phone(i wouldnt of bought it if i did) i just dont think it's a good phone for modding but hopefully that will change...

It's still in Beta at 7.2 now. However I believe the webtop that was removed in the previous version was the hack to make it work with just an HDMI cable so you don't need the dock to make it work. I am on 7.2 and I have the webtop hack installed and it works perfect on my TV through just the HDMI cable.
I am really enjoying the ATRIX. I was starting to get a little burnt out on installing new ROMS every couple days or weeks. This is however my first Android phone...coming from the WinMo forums...This phone is like night and day compared to my old Tilt 2.
People have such harsh and strong opinions on everything on forums. These 'reviews' should be read as objectively as possible.

Welcome Brother I'm in the same boat =P tilt 2 to atrix is an amazingly wonderful jump ~!
I came from a captivate where roms are readily available. I enjoyed flashing and it was awesome to see how a device can mature. But the kernel development is where things truly shine. But even after all the flashing I just felt like things didn't quite work right. I thought it was the fact that 99% of the roms were based off the international galaxy s.
I love my atrix. Everything works. The battery life is awesome. The phone really flies. Motoblur sucks but its been taken care of. As long as we get more roms ill be happy. Unlocked bootloader would be nice but I don't see it happening

(Idea/request/suggestion) CM9/AOKP hybrid

I flashed AOKP over the weekend. I really like the ROM, but I dont feel it is as stable as CM9 (relatively speaking). But the Rom Control feature in AOKP is BOSS!
So, naturally, i say to myself "if CM9 had Rom Control, that would be a pants-tent" . so i did a quick search and found this. It would be great if we had something like this for the vibrant.
I would imagine it wouldn't be the easiest task in the world, but i figured id start this thread, in hopes that someone who is capable of creating, or porting, this would see it and say "yes, i think ill do that."
If i'm not wrong the dev is the themer from Team Whiskey...it would be nice to have all those features on our vibrant...hope that a native english speaker will contact him

yes, mr. Apocalypse was once very active here on the vibrant forum. he had/has a vibrant and is very familiar with our device. i dont like bothering devs with requests like this though, they get tons of requests everyday (just see ANY rom thread for ANY device). if he stumbles across this that would be cool, but this is as far as ill go in pursuing this. ill throw it out there and just hope that willing eyes fall upon it.
What about AOKP wasn't stable for you? I've only found an issue sending some mms (some pics refuse to send, while others send no problem), and GPS doesn't work after deep sleep. Other than that, its been solid, but I don't use every feature either, so there could be some things I'm missing. I'm only asking because if CM9 has fixed GPS after deep sleep, I might consider switching. But, yeah, ROM control is awesome and I'd definitely miss it.

well ICS in general is less stable than CM....i guess you could say i ICS is less stable than gingerbread (on the vibrant).
for me specifically, its because of how many apps i have. when i use cm7.2 and flash the datafix.zip, the thing runs like butter. when i do it for ICS it isnt PAINFULLY slow, but it certainly isnt smooth either.
i also dont like the ram settings on ICS. ive noticed that its much easier to multi-task on froyo or gingerbread. on ics apps close much more quickly when running if the background. a lot of the time, they close right away.
i have some apps that i use daily that must be able to run in the background. tasker is one. another is my radio streaming app. i can run it in the background literally all day on cm7, but with every ics rom ive tried it closes within 5min.
and the reason i singled aokp out is because it is the base for pretty much every ics vibrant rom out there. my apologies if i seemed like i was calling it less stable than the others.
Fair points, now that you mention it, I have noticed ICS is aggressive about killing idle apps. I can't switch back to GB, though.

not even just idle apps.....both tasker and my radio app have persistent notification slots while running. NOTHING that is persistent in the notification menu should ever be killed by the system. ill start my radio app, the menu notification will run and ill turn my screen off and listen to music. a few minutes in the app will be killed and the music will stop. its almost anti-android in that sense.
That sucks. I used Amazon MP3 for hours on end on build 26, I think, with no issue, but haven't tried it since. I'll give it a try later when I have a chance. I'm on 32 right now because 33 kept boot looping on me.

loss of features if not using stock rom?

just ordered my note 10.1 yesterday. should be here next week!
i have an s3, and i just updated it to the latest version of AOKP.
of course i'll be rooting it but i was wondering if anyone thought the tradeoff to using a different rom was worth it. i got the note for work (mainly notes and powerpoints) so i'd hate to not be able to use any of the features that really set it apart from other android tablets!
My personal experience left me inclined to stay with a touchwiz based custom ROM, some extra power and flexibility without losing anything. CM and AOKP are nice as always, but on this particular tablet I really find features like multi window, smart stay and air view to be well worth their weight. There's a growing selection of roms that retain all of the Note's features. I really liked Android revolution a lot, am currently on Collective edition. You can even enable all apps to multi window, which is just savvy!

I tried "Android Revolution HD" and "Omega" ROM, both are very nice and are touchwiz modified roms.
You should check them out.
Android Revolution HD

Omega

One or both of them may use Aroma installer so may want to stick to Zedomax "HighOnAndroids CWM".
Zedomax also has a post "How to ROOT Galaxy Note 10.1" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831152
And here is one of his many .coms that he has that has an embeded step by step video on how to root you note 10.1, his root method includes CWM that does work with Android Revolution HD and Omega ROMs. http://rootgalaxynote.com/galaxy-note-10-1-root/how-to-root-galaxy-note-10-1-easiest-methodcwmmethod-2/
TIP: I download the video of Zedomax root process onto my computer along with the files needed to root so I have them all in one place.
.
Whoa! Thanks!!

Kidding aside though, normally I only deal with AOSP-capable devices, but you have to admit that the TW version (and features) we have on the Note 10.1 are pretty nice- so I'm using ROMs that are as close to Stock as possible (namely, Darkman's ROMs and lately AR HD 5.0).
Also, most complaints about "bloatware" are completely unfounded and appear to come from users who read not-quite-fully-understood posts on forums like these. I've never used Crayon Whatever-it's-called nor the Music Hub, and the effect of either is negligible. They don't take up much in the way of storage either (esp. on devices with at least 11GB of free space out of the box).
Actually it's the stock rom for Australia... Was using my note to post... Samsung seem to have a bug in JB they released for us poor buggers down here. Only real problem with the stock rom though...:silly::laugh:
Not gonna complain too much though, It took them long enough to release it...

99% of the time its being used it's to keep the All-Share Cast Dongle working, which (due to DRM reasons) won't run if the flash counter is greater than 0. It really doesn't affect anything else, AFAIK.

The chances of seeing AOSP/CM/CUSTOMIZATIONS

What's the chances of us seeing production for the GS6 anytime after its release date? Only because its rocking the "Exynos processor" which has delayed a couple projects for GS4 and GS5 in previous occasions. And knox is stronger than ever before according to Samsung's MWC presentation..
What are your thoughts on this.. will development be slow as it was on the GS5?
Thanks in advance!

I predict it will take several months after release before we see any AOSP/CM support. Samsung is really bad about releasing firmware documentation as is, the new processor will probably complicate things further. It seems like they don't want people in control of their devices, even going as far as to lock bootloaders...
The AT&T variant of GS5 doesn't have a functional CM yet, so I wouldn't count on it happening anytime soon. I would like the option, but I can live with a debloated TW rom like I have.
Well, I wouldn't really care. Why spend to dollar on cutting edge hardware to put buggy, featureless firmware that isn't optimized for it anyway.

Because that's what makes android open source, customizable, don't you wanna be able to under/overclock your kernel to save battery? Featureless? Ill take the privilege of being able to customize any day over gimmicky features[emoji110]
slim with aosp based roms. you should be able to get stockish based roms and kernels though.
With exynos, i think not

But you are a small minority and the majority don't care one bit about AOSP Roms and under/over clock. So better get used to it as Samsung and every other company in this game is in for the money not the minorities pleasure.

100% correct[emoji106] harsh but correct...but my question is: will the devs have a way around it??

Are there any large minorities?
Also here on XDA those who want to hack, tweak and mod their phones are the majority. And there always were manufacturers who were willing to produce very good quality phones that were relatively easy to unlock and flash custom recoveries. And they sometimes also used quite open architecture, like the Qalcomm SOCs.
Samsung was one of these, but lately the whole knox=warranty business started to make it a lot harder to root phones. Although those who didn't care for their knox warranty flags, were able to flash custom roms early. (I waited the whole year before I tripped my knox)
But with the S6 they changed three things at the same time: brought back Exynos, removed the external sd card, and sealed the battery in. For the first thing, it's Qualcomm who the real cuplrit is, because they mucked up their 64bit processor. But the rest is Apple's fault, including then need to produce a 64 bit processor.

Stock TW with stock kernel is typically more stable and optimized for performance and battery life anyway. Maybe your argument would have made a point 3 or 4 years ago when Samsung really didn't have all that much experience creating proprietary software that performed well and is optimized. This was back in the S2 and S3 era.
Things are different nowadays and if you really don't know what you're doing, all these options you can tweak can really have an adverse side effect on your day to day usage of the phone.
LMAO who cares ?
if u want AOSP roms just get nexus and save yourself the waiting and the BS = ( Samsung don't support aosp bla bla bla...)

I care, and the rest of xda that roots phones does, the nexus 6 is too big, and the nexus 5 is out dated, stop being a sheep and break out those chains, tweak what u want and dont be complacent just because samsung has it tweaked at a certain frequency or set up a certain eay doesnt mean u cant go beyond and use the phone at its fullest potential

rooting phone and modifying it doesn't always mean u want AOSP roms , specially after xposed framework came over i totally stopped flashing roms and saved the hassle that come with flashing roms and wiping and ****....
sheep? yeah im sheep cuz i want to use my phone with all its functions not flashing buggy roms on my phone that will make lose 80% features of the phone especially cam and speaker and battery optimizations and samsung addons that come with TW , so yeah good luck with buggy AOSP
After seeing all the good things this phone has going for it from the fingerprint scanner, speed of the UI, camera improvements and the new theme engine(that Avengers theme looks nice by the way) there is no way I'm missing out on all that by flashing aosp on it. The funny thing is I used to run aosp exclusively on all my Samsung phone through the S4. The S5 is the first Samsung phone that I've run Touchwiz on 99% of the time. The only the I want on the S6 is root+adaway+maybe some slight debloating.

Thanks, but unfortunately the Moto Maxx is verizon only [emoji20] and the Moto X 2014 is a drawback for me because of the battery.. 2400 mah battery... But i was once in the checkout page for the moto x. 2014 edition 32 gb, i even got accepted for the motorola credit.. but then i saw the M8 on swappa.com for $460(Brand new sealed) and it was a no brainer..but cm12 on the m8 has speaker distortion issues.... So im here hoping for the best when the s6 comes out...

Not a bug or anything, just letting people know that the first boot will take a while. Don't worry if it sits at the pixel boot animation for longer than a few minutes.
hello, it's for an opinion, I'm with Carbon ROm and SNAPPATCH, I have a concern:
* 1) with the autofocus of Open Camera .... autofocus has trouble with close subjects, I tried all focus modes but it's still the same, typed 15 times its screen to have a correct focus, my photos always come out with just a little blurry (and with luck no ...)
2) when taking the picture, the clarity of the screen is still there but to view the picture the intensity of the screen drops a little bit and does not give the effect of having taken the same picture, it's normal ?
So, thank you for a nice answer and good work on SNAPPATCH

Thanks for You constructive Post! There are a lot of Configs and i'm not even aware of what the best Values would be. Means a lot of testing and finetuning for the next Time. At all is it already a good upgrade but i can confirm that there is still a lot to do and to figure out how what works and which Configs are the best. I'm also looking around to get HDR Video Recording and i already made some Steps in the right Direction like it seem. I'll keep You informed on the Main Thread and the Changelogs when something changes or improves! Hope You can live for now with the Camera...

When trying to install Substratum, its getting half way done building the overlays, seems stuck. Any ideas?
BTW Im hitting the 8.1 and build & enable
Also what a good app to use to change those kernel numbers
Tested it: performance is much slower than stock. Geekbench shows 60% less performance.
Wifi is stronger.
No X-reality.
Safe charging doesn't exist.
Camera is very good, but the focus is off, cannot take pictures of nearby objects.
Back to stock for me

You don't even tried the Real World Performance such as Task switching or Gaming Performance? X-Reality? Sounds not like testing for Me...
And what is Safe Charging? It does Quick Charge (3.0) as Safe as Possible. Otherwise would it just start heat up or totally stops the charging since there is a Controller for such Things.... Besides that seems the Device to stay a lot Cooler while Charging (Booted in Android).
Don't get Me wrong. But Posts like this are the Stone on the Development Grave here. It just tells People that something is sh**, and they don't even think about to try it out. Half of the Posts i see on the Xperia Forums are non Sense, complaining, or feature request. That's isn't helpful to anyone and just keeps Devs from joining the Development here. See the TWRP Thread from Myself5 or the Kernel Thread from AndroPlus (Both long Time Contributers). It's a wonder that Myself5 is still providing his Carbon Builds on the Forums....
To be honest, besides the ROM from Myself5 and My Patch is there nothing great to find for the XZ Premium. If You can't believe that go back to Nougat or use this trashy ROM from Turbo which contains non working "Tweaks" and seems to be 90% based on Superrs Kitchen without additional Optimizations (My 5 Years old Brother can do that). Just removed some Content and Copy - pasted a Kernel with the DRM Fix. It's sad...
And before i start to talk more about the Problems here am i out for now. New Patch is up and i'm looking forward to more Enhancements which You will NEVER get on Stock!

Thanks for You nice Words Mate! I really take My at off to You for Your calmness! I'm 24 now and around 6 Years posting on XDA. I still can't accept that XDA has changed over the Years, and i think that's My Problem. It's not the Users Fault, XDA just mutated to another Place and no one can change that except for the Owners of this Site. And i don't see that coming. XDA is still under Construction since Years (DEV DB, Thread Features, Site Designs, Post Editing), and there is no End...
I looked often around for other Places to share My Work, but looks like i have to live with that here... At least do i know that here are still some Friendly Devs and Users, and that's what keeps Me here at the End. So Thanks again for Your Post! And keep You also up Your ROMs! It would be really Silent in our Forums without You...

After days of using, here's my simple feedback.
(G8142,lastest official CarbomROM)
1.Battery life is as good as,if not better than that of stock.
2.When slipping the screen,it lags.(compared to stock)
But i believe it is the rom to be blame.
3.Actually game performance is not good, for example,Fate/Grand Order and HearthStone, the animation of which lags.
4.The Pixel-like UI is cool! i love it.
keep developing, and i will stay on AOSP

Thanks for Your Feedback!
I can't tell if the Patch is causing it or not, but it runs just well on My Axon 7 using AOSP Extended. Same for Gaming or Multitasking. Graphic intensive Games are running more fluid and with less heat, and the App switching is much faster. But i see the Lags all few Seconds on the XZP. Are You also using the Carbon ROM?
Think i will try out pure AOSP after some sleeping...
And yes, i will continue the Development! There is much left to do, and i think a own AOSP OS from Me including many of the Patch Features will also come in the next Time (AOSP Project for Xperia Devices). At least at this Point should be all Lags be part of the past...
Hope to see You around again! BR
Try change g google play services and the lag will go.

hey, i have tried the latest AOSP by SonyAOSP team, and now i am on it.
It is smoother than stock, without any lag.
however i could not boot into recovery, which makes me unable to flash the latest Snappatch.
i think we are getting closer to it...

Great to hear so far, but what's the Problem with Your Recovery? Mine works fine here...
Have You tried flashing the last One from TWRP.me with Fastboot? The Patch should not affect it in any way. So it's a really strange Issue... ?

Yes indeed, with yesterday compiled Sony AOSP TWRP is broken.
With the whole source from the end of March all was fine. But I got weird errors with this patch which rendered the phone unusable at all.
Sadly I have no clue how to debug a recovery. TWRP only worked before first boot.
