[Q] Be real with me here... is Lollipop worth it? - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've read through just about every Lollipop thread on this Verizon forum. I'm currently sitting on rooted 4.4.2, happily enjoying some pretty stable performance and battery life thanks to debloating, Amplify, Greenify and the like. With Nova Launcher and all of the Material Google apps, the interface can be made to look a lot like Lollipop as is.
Given all of the challenges that have come along with the update (battery, performance, root issues, beta Xposed support compared to 4.4.x), can those of you who have made the leap answer one question with a justification as to why - Was upgrading your Verizon Galaxy S5 to Lollipop worth it?

Wasn't worth it to me. Played with a couple lollipop ROMS for a week and now I'm back to 4.4.4.

If your not the type that needs to be on the latest version and your happy with things as they are now, leave well enough alone. Newer is not always better, besides there are very limited 5.0 roms right now.

You know the old saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it"! I haven't updated yet im still on beans Alliance rom and it run fantastic and battery life is exceptional so i don't see a solid reason to move on. This is probably the longest I've been on any rom but it has some nice customizations and i use xposed for a few things so im content. The grass isn't always greener on the other side.

I tried 5.0 but found that a few apps don't work on it yet. I went back to 4.4.4 and will probably stay there until rooting 5.0 is easier and more apps get updated.

For me I've given it about 2 weeks now, and i give it a big no. Mostly for how bad the battery life is and how sluggish it gets throughout the day. Going to go back to KK this weekend....

I have been using rom-v6-0-touchwiz-modness-lollipop-4-t3035513 and am extremely happy with it. you dont get to have Exposed on it but i only used exposed for turning off charging sounds and theming whitch you can do with the moar controls on this rom

I played with LP bit came back to 4.4.4 NK2 and NK7.
There were too many things in LP that I didn't really like, starting with the battery life. It isn't as good as KK.
Now I'm running stock NK7 debloated with the NI2 debloater and no mods but it runs the way I like it. And battery is amazing !

While on lollipop, I had nothing but problems. My gear fit and g watch were both pretty flaky on holding a connection and Bluetooth would randomly reset for no reason. Battery life was horrid. I found that I didn't enjoy being on lollipop, it felt like my phone was just hobbled together. Back to KK and I couldn't be happier.

Anyone have both the S4 and G2 ? opinions ?

I am up for my ATT upgrade, and I did pick up the LG G2 myself over the weekend, and my wife got the S3. After having the G2 only a three days, the battery life is nowhere near advertised, I am sure it's due to the amazing amount of bloat pre-installed on this phone, which is pretty shocking, just a million ATT and LG bloat apps. My G2 only got 3h On Screen time after it's second full charge, and total of 10 hours battery life, somethings wrong. I am sure it is CIQ and apps running in background, will root and delete all those apps, after I decide if keeping this phone. My wife's new S3 was getting same or even better battery life over my G2.
Where as my Wife's S3, I know it's the outdated older phone, but the feel of it in hand with Belkin gel case, just felt so comfortable and great in the hand, i could squeeze that phone and have a solid firm grip, I am sure the S4 would feel just the same. The G2 to me is on that fine borderline of just too large for me. I also had the Note 2 for three weeks back in the winter, and I could never get used to it's size for one handed use. And the g2 is at that border for me, almost too large. I seem to like a phone the size of the S3 at the most, and I think the S4 is exactly the same size, but even thinner, with a little bigger screen.
Battery life on a the S4 ? I am sure not even close to supposed G2 battery life, but is the S4 way off form the G2 or at least close ? And for people that have had both the S4 and G2, how do they compare in hand, and comfortably in holding it, and using it daily ?
Thanks
Hi, running S4 here. Yeah, you'll certainly want to debloat and get rid of everything you don't use.
Yeah, first off, condition the battery with absolutely-full recharges and absolutely-full discharges. Cycle this over the course of the week to level it out; should be four or five cycles total. I had a battery go from what you talk about to better than my stock battery after several cycles and two weeks' usage. A pain, I know, but you have to do it in order to rule out whether or not that's the issue.
Second, root that shiz. Then get your latest good-battery-life ROM and couple it with the right kernel. This makes a world of difference, as certain kernels are "on-demand" in that they downclock the CPU to low levels when the screen is off and it's in standby mode, and they boost the CPU power as needed. Further, they often undervolt draw from the battery making it last all the much longer.
Third, Greenify: get that application and it will tell you what the heck is eating up CPU time, and stop it for you and prevent it from starting up until needed. This is not a task auto-killer.
Following these steps, my battery life went from what you describe to 24+ hours with medium usage. I absolutely never have battery issues anymore, and my backup battery? I never need it (so it's actually become a bit of a chore to swap out batteries and cycle them periodically to keep them fresh).
As far as form-factor is concerned, yeah... the S4 works alright one-handed, sure. Obviously, you have different sized hands from me, though.
My setup: LiquidSmooth ROM 2.9, running KToonSez' kernel with HIS recommended settings, plus 25mV across the board for stability (which amounts to a net -75mV undervolt). Absolutely pleased as punch.
I exchanged my LG G2 for the Galaxy S4, and couldn't be happier so far. Couldn't get comfortable with the G2.
In the past year, I've had a lot of phones; HTC One X, Note 2, Nexus 4, G2, and now the S4. To me the S4 feels best in hand, just a great size, with beautiful screen. The S4 is lightweight, and feels very comfortable in the hand with a case, I like the design of the black one it looks classy and cool. Not sure why so many people call this phone cheap and lame looking ? Once you have a cool looking case on it, the phone looks fantastic.
I just rooted it last night using the Kingo method, no ROM's yet, just stock, and deleted a ton of ATT and Samsung crap bloat, also installed Greenify, DroidWall, and running Nova launcher with the Axis icon theme. We'll see how battery life goes ? Trying to install AdFree but it won't connect to the server to actually activate it, been reading that's an ongoing issue the last day in other threads.
The G2 was nice, but just too heavy and large, as lame as that sounds. The thin bezels are almost too thin, afraid to crack damage the phone too easily. Plus 5.2" is just over that borderline of screen size I am comfortable with. The S4 is as big a phone I want, that's the limit, I don't want anything larger, but also nothing smaller, I think the S4 is just the right screen size, thinness and weight.
Overall I like the S4 a lot so far, more than the G2 as crazy at that sounds. And find the S4 more enjoyable than my Nexus 4. Only bummer is that I am on the MF3 - Mother Fukker firmware, so I am limited on ROM if I go that route, but so far happy enough just rooted on stock.
You should install safestrap along with a custom ROM you won't regret it. Did you get the 16 or 32 gig? 16 gig tends to be not that much internal space but it works out still. I'm using vision x stock ROM and couldn't be happier its way faster than stock, it also has ad-away already pre-installed and ktweaker on it along with no bloat. I was going to stay on my stock rooted rom also but got safestrap and a rom on it and couldn't be happier.

Thanks, I think I will take the plunge Just a little nervous on the whole Safestrap thing, but I replied to the thread with questions, it's mainly a 7 step process, looks pretty straightforward if I follow all of those steps to a 't'. I am sure one of those TW ROM's like SHO will be fast and smoother, maybe better battery life over stock ?

There's no reason to be nervous with safestrap its easy to use and it won't mess anything up as long as your on a different ROM slot than your stock. So leave your stock ROM slot alone. I was having problems with sho's newest ROM but its a great ROM altogether I just felt since he released it, there was still going to be some bugs so I'm just waiting a little longer to flash it again. But definitely faster, better battery life and smoother. I also use nova launcher prime and it flies! Lol also I think you wanted the s4 in the beginning but since the lg g2 was newer or you heard a lot of bad about the s4 you sent with the g2?

Can you please post the exact link to that ROM you are using. Want to make sure I am pointed int eh right direction not download a ROM that won't work on MF3 firmware. Thank you
Think I found that ROM, but not digiing the heavy metal crazy theme LOL Is SHO not stable enough to run a as a good daily ? It seems SHO was last updated in September ? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2305752
It has a stock ROM and a themed ROM which is the heavy metal one. Stock ROM is basically like your stock with a few tweaks. It might be stable now just download and try it yourself. It won't hurt anything to try so you'll be okay.

If I want to use the vision x stock ROM, and go with the stock theme, I would chose the download dated 10/01/13 ? There are two different downloads for the ATT MF3, looks like the theme version dated 09-22/13, and the stock dated 10/01, is that correct ?

G2 vs S4
I have both. Love G2 for its Great Battery, Bigger and excellent display and Flexibility in ROMs. Camera in Low light not good.
S4 has the SD Card and removable battery, good camera. Locked up bootloader and virtually no options for modding. Battery life for me has not been good at all (I am on MJ6 and rooted and Have all multiple issues - not being able to install to SD card, battery life, etc)
I would go for G2 again.
On s4, passed on g2 cause of its button design and no SD card or removable battery....
bad thing about new s4 is the locked BL but I think your wife it wouldn't be too important I had s3 and s4 battery is amazing couldn't be happier with battery...
Also all the bloat garbage on the stock but once root its a lot better....
Rooted mf3 SHOstock

Would you recommend Android 4.4.1 over 4.3?

UPDATE: would you recommend Android 4.4.1 over Android 4.3 on the Nexus 4? Why? Why not?
Okay, a little title change here. So I'm hearing some good things on 4.4.1, so let me ask you a few questions, even if it may be too early at this point:
- anyone who didn't recommend 4.4 before feels like 4.4.1 is major step forward?
- how's battery life, especially in regards of wakelocks and unexpected drainage? Does wakelockdetector work now?
- how's 4.4.1 performance compared to 4.3, both stock, is it definitely snappier?
- how's camera performing to 4.3, how's photoshere stitching?
- anyone running it WITHOUT factory reset and 4.4 & 4.4.1 installed over 4.3, experiencing zero problems?
Thank you!

Okay I guess it's a question I want answer to, but I posted in the General cause more than a simple answer I look forward to a positive discussion on the matter - is 4.4 stable, app-supported and bug free enough right now to easily recommend the update, would you rather suggest to wait until bug fixes or would you flat out say avoid it?
I added a poll to get a statistical look of the Community's take on this so others can check where 4.4 stands now on the Nexus 4 according to XDA.
Of course, KitKat is a great update. It's the best Android version yet and I love where Google is going with it.

obviously yes, the 4.4 google nexus update is awesome, dunno for other devices ( in future ). by the time samsung launches it, it will be full of bugs, ala 4.3 for s3
I think everyone who has an unlocked bootloader should for sure. Definitely needs to be ran for a couple days to get a feel for it. If you want customization you'll most likely go back to 4.3 as 4.4 rom's don't have very much. (yet)
Performance and UI changes (if there..) are nice. On the other hand there are too many bugs to recommend it. Also, and this does not apply to many, battery life of my N4 sucks after some days on KK. No, there is no bad app. Ask my bbs stats

I also have to say my battery life sucks now that I'm on 4.4.
Not sure what it is but I got 12 hours TOTAL. Not even with a lot of use. Most of the time the screen was off and I didn't much use it. That's compared to a full day of life when I was on JB.
I'm wondering if a factory reset would help it.
I'm running KRT16O on my phone and loving it. However, it appears I was one of the lucky ones. No bugs, no bootloop.
KRT16S is obviously not ready for rollout. It's been soft-bricking devices like crazy it seems. I hope Google halts the OTA and fixes this. Until then, I'm sticking with 16O.
Hold off and wait.
So, there are plenty of bugs here, lags on the lock screen, lags in the applications, applications which still doesn't working, camera is making very bad pictures and so on - take a look to android 4.4 bugs forum.
I am back to 4.3 and waiting for 4.4.1.
No, i don't recommend 4.4 on the nexus 4 yet.

Recommended. I'm on KRT16S with no problems whatsoever. Great fluidity and no bugs.
I think 4.4 has some good news, but not worth it. I was using paranoid ROOM with linaro franco kernel and i`m ready to get it back on my device.
krt16s
KRT16S is very good image,my phone is full apps and all working without problem,i use nova last beta 3 launcher and working realy fast,i dont like GEL icons(too big for me),battery is great, after 10 hours stand by time 4-6 %, ,on screen i think is wery good, betther than 4.3....no FC,no lags, everything work fluid and fast....
i flash with FB,and after flashing factory reset....
It's significantly better than 4.3 IMO. I personally clean flash for every major update after taking a backup, and I'm having absolutely no issues. UI is extremely smooth, no bugs with tethering or anything of that sort and battery life has actually improved.
I'd recommend a clean flash if you have the time, just to be thorough.
I would definitely recommend it. Performancewise...it has never been better imo! I don't experience any of those bugs mentioned above. Smoothness is just amazing.

How's that ART thing on the Nexus 4? Is it too experimental at this point to be of everyday use?

I switched to ART immediately upon updating last week. It runs great. I've only had a few bugs(Timely takes about 10 seconds to open). Beyond that, I like it. I let my friend who is using CM 11 on his GNex try it out last night and he was impressed with the performance.
If you get KitKat to install without soft-bricking, you're going to have a good experience IMO. However, due to the risk of bootloop, I cannot recommending the update at this time in good conscience.
4.4 is the best android version so far, and with ART is amazingly smooth!
Sure - I have been using since a day after Google released the factory images and I didn't have a single problem with it. I also flashed zip for transparent nav bar in the lockscreen and installed Nova launcher beta and everything is as smooth as butter
Well, i'm not using ART so far because I don't like to use a hacked lib or an outdated app to be able to use all my apps with it.
That aside, KRT16S has been awesome so far, battery life has improved, the UI is much smoother and with ApexPro 2.2.0 beta 1 the interface has the same transparency as GEL (Which I uninstalled already. I don't like the kiddie-sized icons, it looks too toy-like).
On KTR16S ... Battery is worse than KTR16O which is worse than 4.3 for me... My experience with ART was not great, but probably because my phone is almost full of files and got full (system and free space for storage) after a long time to optimize...after that I didn't notice a better performance and missed some of my apps so returned back to dalvik ...but I would recommend KitKat....I like GEL and about its size icons I changed DPI than got great for me

I'm sorry I still carry some noobage... install without soft bricking, what do you mean by that? I'm waiting for the OTA but still undecided whether to install when it arrives. Speaking of, if it does, can I install it over 4.3 keeping my apps & settings? I'm unrooted and not planning to.

Comparing Lollipop vs Kitkat

Give me your thoughts about your experience with Lollipop and KitKat.
What did you liked the best and why?
Which felt for you the most fluid?
Personally I've still questions about the fluidness on LP comparing to KK.
Anyone who thinks KK is smoother, snappier?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Free mobile app

I find jelly bean to be more similar to lollipop than kitkat. In terms of battery life and snappiness.
Kitkat was like windows vista. A non refined stepping stone.
Thanks to devs it became usable at some point but lollipop and jellybean are both fantastic out of the box.
I think KK does feel a bit snappier in some parts of the UI, but the overall smoothness and logical flow in the user experience is miles ahead in LP (and the new design plays a key role)
After months of LP I tried rolling back to KK two days ago just to see how it would go and, well, I reflashed LP like 24 hrs later. It may not feel like a great deal when you first boot it but after some months and this episode I can say that the overall experience is far superior except for one thing: we want the feckin LED to blink in priority/none!
Techie wise, performance is superior to 4.x in pretty much every aspect and battery life isn't going to let you down, especially if you resort to the new Battery Saver
lollipop is definitely faster

The Android System drain is whats bothering me. Funny thing is I searched in three different threads for the three different ROMs I flashed and each one has someone saying "bro you have to let the ROM settle". Sometimes when we want something to be perfect we disillusion ourselves to whats really going on.
I just put t mobile lollipop on my phone for the first time. I was using Mr. Impossible's boc rom.
I'm really enjoying stock lollipop for the 5 minutes until I flash PopRocks.
This is the way to go.
It's fun to know how to downgrade, but something will come after lollipop.
Gotta stay current.
The xposed guys need to catch up.
But, I've been waiting for lollipop.
No going back.
I tried LP for about a week or so then downgraded to KK.
Everything works as used to including xposed and other apps. No hiccups and lags.
I will wait until LP gets stablized.

Agreed. I had a very bad experience on the Lollipop ROM I tried.
Plus the loss of Xposed & all it's customizations, tweaks, ect... has me feeling at this point to hold out on LP. I will admit though, between the flukes I experienced, Lollipop was very fluid.

Well, I can confirm about the 'rom settling time'
I have tried most of the lollipop roms out there, and and finally settled on one. While I was switching between these LP roms, all of them gave me less than a day of battery life. Now, with the current rom, first 2 days were similar but since the 3rd day, it is doing very good. Almost getting one and a half day of moderate use.
I also tried different kernels, and to me the stock kernel is the best in terms of battery life and stability.
Looking for the thread on how to revert now. Too many hiccups for my liking and I really dislike not having control over my app permissions. I deleted the ones that were really bad but there are still a few I would like to restrict.
Reverted back today to Kitkat. Needed xposed for YouTube ad blocking ... Was driving me crazy. Going to wait for lollipop next update probably.

Stock kernel, no mods same Rom for 6 days. Android System is still my highest draw.
I get giving your phone an hour but more than 3 days to "settle". I think it's one of those placebo affects but that's just my opinion.
I downgraded for about 3 days just for xposed but I missed the battery life, smart lock, and overall quickness of LP so I went back. I found alternatives to most of my favorite xposed mods so I don't think I'll ever go back to KK now. I get almost a full hour more of SOT with LP.

I think I get better battery life in KK
Thanks for this thread. I am going to stay with KK on my Note 4. Going to stay this way until I get to Note 5 in Oct.
Back on KK as well, LP was nice but xda will improve it in maybe a month or so. For feels good to have my phone looking right.
I just reverted back to kitkat.
Downgrading after waiting so long seems silly.
Its stupid how people think that update automatically assumes upgrade. If you are happy with how things are running, why change it? Most updates simply contain more bloat and a greater propensity for ads. I have my kitkat rom running perfect, inverted with zero white backgrounds, all stupid pastel colors removed and fluid as can be. Change sucks.. oftentimes and quite honestly happens simply for the sake of "change".
I updated to Lollipop. Ran it for a few days and then reverted back to kitkat. I'll stay on KK till xposed is working for our Sam's. Not having xposed is a deal breaker for me. I've been using it since I bought my g2x and just can't run rooted without it.

Note 3 Kitkat Vs Lollipop

Should i upgrade to lollipop? my note 3 n9005
iv heard some draining battery issue :v
I have the same question. I feel good with KK rom: very stable, fast, battery friend. All apps works good.
I would like to try Lollipop, but read a lot of battery drain problems, no real advantages in performance, some compatibility issues for some apps.
Is lollipop really better, at this moment for note 3?
If yes, in your opinion, why?

I ran lollipop since it came out and recently rolled back to KK. The phone is smooth and responsive again.
You wait hours to open the recents and the phone is simply lagging after 2 or 3 days of uptime.
The lollipop UI looks better and feels more polished, but the performance is a deal breaker.
I haven't had any issues with battery life, pretty much same as KK.
Until they fix the memory leak LP will not be any where near as good as KK and with M coming out soon they very well may stop updating LP for M and make a new polish OS instead of patching LP to match KK performances. ..I'm using arya rom v5.4 and having no problems yet but performance is not better than KK and recent apps takes way to long to open ...i do like KK clean fast and battery good audio is better in KK small glitches on LP ...it just doesn't feel like it's polished enough for a high end phone

The only way that i'll use LP, is when they release 5.1 version. Until that i stay with 4.4.2.
I'm happily staying on 4.4.2. 5.0 is unstable, looks terrible and has far too many problems.
In fact, I'm still on NB7. Yes, Februari 2014. The battery life I have is amazing, I'm not risking an update.

I would say kitkat has a better stability ,smoother and more battery friendly without you doing much tweaking. Lollipop can be as good as kitkat but need tweaking.
If you are ordinary user and do not care about updates, I recommend kitkat. If you are flasholic then most likely you will move forward to Lollipop and android M soon.
