Potential gaming platform
I know it's been said on other forums, i'm not sure if it has been said in this one though. Anyways, with supposed unrestricted use to the services of the phone, i can't wait to see what sort of games we can see on Android. With wifi, 3g, and bluetooth, this can be the ultimate gaming platform and capitalize where wm and apple didn't. Imagine mmo's, multiplayer deathmatches, or something as simple as spades, all online or played on bluetooth. And androids focus on playing in wm territory can mean potential for a huge installer base. The future for Android looks bright indeed.
http://www.techcrunchit.com/2008/07/18/google-remove-xmpp-support-in-android/
apps for android are Managed code in java which in most cases is the enemy of speed
and supporting 3d features in cpu and gpu though
Any phone I have had since the Nokia 3300 has become a gaming phone for me. Special kudos to playing Dragon Warrior I & II on the Nokia 6600's gameboy emulator.
(I wish the trackball would be on the left like gaming controllers, which was the first major thing I had to adapt to when going from Wing to G1, but oh well - what can ya do?)
The one thing i would love to see for the android is pocketnesterplus. I'm not sure if there is a way to use it with g1, but hopefully one will come out soon for the nes games. Its extremely hard to play alot of the nes games on most phones but with trackball it would be easier to control the directions. I've heard some of the top game companies are coming on board, all of them better if they're smart!!!
it seems like there was an opengl demo by google a while back where they ran doom I would like to see more 3D games esp if they are written to run off the kernel and display thru the FB device that android creates. As far as I know there is no reason that android apps NEED to be in java.... maybe to be on the market they do... but it's a linux kernel... it should run arm9/11 compiled programs
Does anyone know if there will be development of an emulator for old school consoles like NES and SNES?

Haven't seen any announcements of one(except that there's a really slow gameboy emulator on the marketplace) but I can say with 99.999999% assurance that there will be some.
Has anyone else thought of emulators on the ouya? Playing retro games on the big screen again would be great. Personally this is one of the biggest reasons I'm excited for the console. Can't wait to play ocarina of time.

I've bought/pre ordered the ouya primarily for xbmc, but being able to pay some classics like shadow run and legend of Zelda, whilst lying in bed on a Sunday morning is massively appealing.
It's starting to feel like Christmas with the release just around the corner and I'm looking forward to seeing what the devs around here do when they get their mucky paws on it.
cooool
No, I prefer something like the Xperia Play for emulators, though its a bit out dated in term of performance. But the Ouya should do emulators really well too. I'm mainly getting the Ouya to use as an HTPC.
ditto.
I backed OUYA mainly for XBMC but the fact that I can run emulations is a bonus. imaging DosBox with all the old school Sierra games, on the big screen.
Emulate
God i totally love the idea of using emulators on this it's another reason i purchased it. On my phone gs2 i use the playstation emulators gameboy eveyrthing now to be able to do it on a tv.... man im excited
Search YouTube. Tons of videos of devs using side loaded emulators to play old school games on the Ouya. It's reality, folks.

Betrayal at Krondor
Honestly, there's not really more "possibility" with emulation on the Ouya than there is on any other somewhat recent Android device.
There is one bad thing. The focus Ouya team are now placing on emulators could result in unneeded focus on the subject and gaming company retained lawyers could be out for money. Kind of like when MP3 started getting popular and you had a lot of one hit wonders trying to sue for a back catalogue that nobody even bought when they were new. Saturday Night Live had a funny skit about that.
Ouya had better be careful, since they are pushing it as a feature, which will be like a bleeding cut in the water to lawyers.

I dunno about having to worry that much about emulation and the legalities for the OUYA. Heck, google play sells emulators that can be used on any android device. the ouya is that itself.. just another android device. emulation isn't illegal..
The emulation is not illegal, only the BIOS and the Games which are downloaded
are more or less illegal. These would have to be copied from your own console with
special equipment... nobody does this in the time of internet.
Theoretically this things could be free to download if the copyright owner allows this.
There is also my idea, that Nintendo and others aren't interested in forbidding emulation
for some (not every) console and that's why they aren't fighting against emulation.
In Ouya you can download and install anything... So, doesn't matter if it's legal or not...
Has anyone tested the Interworks Controller Pro U (aka Retro Classic Controller) with the Ouya (or any Android device)? I'm especially interested in joystick functionality...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727
I've sideloaded SNES9X emu, works good. Started playing chrono trigger, it nice it has an option to let joystick function as dpad.
I'm about to see n64oids performance on the ouya. If it does run smoothly then I guess I will be replaying Zelda oot
I personally prefer mupen64. Ouya is plenty powerful enough for it anyway
Emulators
Emulators, I hadn't even thought of that, now I'm really excited about the Ouya, mine should be arriving very soon... I think some companies turn a blind eye to very old emulated games because it keeps their IP popular, which for some franchises still has some value.
For now, i managed to work gba, nes, snes, genesis, psx and n64 emulators via sideloading and all worked smooth with posibility of assign hardware pad buttons to them
There are 3 emulators in the OUYA store.
1. EMUya for NES emulation with intergrated ROM store (I'm sure this won't go forever, pretty much illegal).
2. Mugen64 is an N64 emulator which works better than any N64 I tested before, plus it's already mapped to work with the OUYA controller and does so flawlessly. No lag whatsoever
3. 2 different SNES emulators which also work very good. One of them is already altered to work perfect with the OUYA the other one is a known one from the play store.
I got the ouya especially for emulation, because hooking up my Galaxy S3 via HDMI to the TV and using a PS3 wireless controller was too much of a hassle and had a crazy input lag. With the OUYA no input lags at all.
Feels like playing the real consoles. Finally.
So i was just browsing around and apparently XOLO is releasing a new gaming phone. At first i was excited cause the name was "XOLO Play" and i don't know about you guys but that very sounded familiar. So yeah with my heart full of hope and my head full of dreams i clicked on the link, and thats when i got angry. NO PHYSICAL CONTROLS!!!!!!! Come on now, just cause you call it a gaming phone doesn't make it a gaming phone, and if you are going to call it a gaming (no physical controls) phone at least give is some out of this world sick specs. These don't even compare to the latest phones let alone make it a genuine gaming phone. Compare this to the HTC ONE, Sony Xperia Z, or the Samsung GS4 and it pretty much nothing.
Are you guys feeling the same way about these so called "Gaming Phones"?

XPERIA PLAY 2 WHERE ARE YOU?
yeah it's a pity
i would use my old nokia and buy a gcw zero handheld instead of buying a high-tech phone when my play dies. just bought the play for emulation on the go.
it's my new n-gage (had both of them ) as it should be - just a lot more fragile
i'll buy that on first day , if that has physical gamepad.
but how ! how a phone can serve to gamers without pgysical game pad ????!!1
suerly , without gamepad , xperia ZU is much better that it ....
where is xoeria play 2
I think there will be no Xperia play. Sony decided to join that race for fast and thinner handset, there no room for chunky gaming phone for nerds
But seriously, if not Sony there will be other manufacturer. When you look how games develop on Google Play market. I know majority of people play Angry birds, Candy crush saga etc. so they don't need pad to play. But from other side you got games like MC, NOVA or even DH, that games played smearing your fingers on screen seems wrong and these games need proper gamepad.
Btw. found this on YT, interesting concept:
at the moment i don't think there is a profitable market for aaa console class games. since android seriously has to deal with piracy and every dev seem to push the price even lower. it came so far that newer games have to use in app purchases to get the development costs back in.
a market could be created however. when some bin manufactures decide to do real gaming devices like a psp vita.
or we need something like steam on android where the consumer base is already there (linux gaming is coming because of this - so will the 3d drivers for linux be improved over time because the market is there).
there are actually a few android gaming devices (especially in china). also the new handheld from nvidia is based on android. i wouldn't say there won't be any real gaming phone in the future.
I believe there will never be another phone with gaming controls built in. As far as buying a regular phone to game on, you can't beat an inexpensive Nexus 4. There's lots of them used up for sale. With a Snapdragon S4 Pro quadcore and 2Gb of ram, it really is a gaming powerhouse. You can't get anything close to that price.

Interesting video but a few thinks wrong no L/R triggers and no joystick/touchpads also its windows but still interesting.
Yeah there are ALOT of android gaming devices but we want a android gaming phone.
Also the xperia play 2 could be thin if if they wanted too. That would also make the phone slightly uncomfortable though, but thats the good thing about android customization and variety it fat phones just down right sicken you then go get a different phone, but i want gaming controls so a fat phone sounds fine to me.
.......................
I'm so confused...
How can they label that a 'Gaming' smartphone? Specifications of other smartphones far surpass that of the XOLO Play and considering it lacks any form of hardware controller it is no different to every other phone that is released at the moment.
Not to mention the 12 core ULV GPU is seriously crap in the Tegra 3. It's not much better than the Adreno 205 in my opinion. CPU is great though...
They got peoples attention lol
I think i'll keep my money for something else

I'm thinking about buying either an Ouya or a Mojo as an emulator machine but i have a few questions about the MOJO.
To make it simple.... I love the Ouya and it would be perfect for me, i only wish it was a little more powerful... (for more fps on PSP games and San Andreas in high quality etc...)
So can i expect the Ouya on MOJO to run like a real Ouya and even more? Or is it only partially working?
Is there any way to hide the navigation bar when running an app or will there be soon? (maybe a Ouya app update or something?)
What would you guys suggest?
I'm really torn between those 2, some advice would be greatly appreciated!

Emulators and media is about all its use full for so ur in luck me man, however I have had massive issues regarding storage space which might restrict how many ROMs u could use. Tbh ur better off getting a reliable tablet and a TV out cable
well a good tablet is expensive and ressources are wasted on battery saving etc....
i'm probably going to get a MOJO, but only if i can get rid of the navigation bar while running an app...

I think there's apps that removes it after rooting it.. it doesn't bother me so I haven't checked.
Re ouya everywhere, people where saying the frame work crashes, it might have been fixed, I don't like ouya so haven't checked.
well ouya has got some really cool stuff for emulators, like the Nostalgia app regrouping all your emulators etc... and it's nice to change from the stock android, but the specs are really ****ty... anyway, i found some ways to hide the navigation bar and stumbled upon your website where you shared your thoughts about the MOJO while google-ing and it pretty much convinced me to buy one... the ouya won't last long with specs so low
MOJO or Fire TV
Should I buy a Mad Catz MOJO or Fire TV? I'm a android enthusiast and I own an OUYA. The Mad Catz MOJO would be a perfect device for me having all that power inside. Tegra 4 with 2GB of ram sounds impressive for a Micro Console not to mention the nice controller. Now I've noticed the Fire TV is able to install the Play Store which basically solves the problem of not having to buy all of my apps again. Fire TV from what I've seen is pretty powerful, but you don't get all that Tegra goodness. $99 plus controller vs. $199 with controller. We need more Mad Catz MOJO videos on Youtube because there are some more games I want to see running.
well you can install google play store on the MOJO and it's only 150$ now, plus you can install the Ouya App so you get the best of both worlds!
@Energizing, yeah the ouya 16GB compared to the MOJO is a no brainer IMO.
The Amazon fireTV compared to MOJO, could ague either way..
The biggest draw back on the mojo is not having kitkat, which means we're stuck on late 2013 game releases instead of having the newer games like shield1 has.

Been playing a bit of oldschool OpenArena (ouya apk version), I got GTA 3, just ran out of ideas, I'll do a video or two!
After all the hype this past summer about Android TV powered by NVidia I spent the last half of 2014 keeping my eyes peeled for Android TV news. Then the release of the Nexus with atom/vr was a big disappointment! Now of all things Razer which I thought for sure would use NVidia goes for Qualcomm another disappointment! There is the upcoming Snail Games OBox which looks interesting but does not appear to be Android TV based? Am I the only one who would like a K1 or for that matter X1 powered box? Yes I admit I am a NVidia fan I can notice graphics that come from NVidia colors are different just personal choice.
Contrary to what most of you here enjoy(Mods, Sideloading, etc.) these things should be a choice not something that has to be done to make the system work for such things as storage for games? I currently own FireTV, Madcatz Mojo, Ouya, ADT1 and it seems to me that android still has a way to go before it truely is ready for the living room out of the box? The issue is difficult one player has HBO Go while the other can load apps and Kodi I have been searching for that box that can do all of this DAY 1 ? I am getting older and while I enjoy reading this forum and all the talent it contains I just don't have the energy to perform all these mods just to get what I consider to be that perfect box that just works when you plug it in:victory:?
Very true. I'd consider myself an Android "enthusiast" and got the original Logitech Google TV and then the Sony Google TV. Big disappointments! The Nexus Player is great when compared to those two, but I'm only using it for games right now. The Roku 3 is still superior in terms of media consumption - at least in my eyes.

While I don`t disagree with you, you can wait forever for the latest hardware or UI. There will always be a better chip or box just around the corner and that next release of code is coming any day now. The way I look at it is we are at about gen 1-2 of these devices (I have had a couple already) with a few more to go. You can either sit on the sidelines for another 1-2 years or understand the limitations of what you are getting and play with it. Remember Android TV was released less than a year ago and has some growing up to do. The alternative is a stock Android OS, which requires customization.
I have the NP and think the specs are reasonable for the cost I paid. I could pay to play for all the google services, or tinker (as I have) and install Kodi and a bunch of other apps.
The only problem with your strategy is that in order to get a turn key solution with no tinkering, it will likely come from your friendly cable or IPTV provider with an additional subscription fee.

Your so right, Its a never ending cycle with new products all the time. It just seems in this case you either have a good OS with ahhhh...specs! , or great specs with terrible software (example: Madcatz Mojo). My worst habit is I shop by specs which gets expensive:silly:
I dont mind spending $$$ for a box but even then the market is bare save PS4 or Xbox....maybe Tivo? Looking forward to a true Android Game Console...Storage and all!
I'm definitely keeping my eyes on the Obox!
If I have to wait, wait I shall. Lol!
Could someone please advise me here.
In terms of longevity of use, lowest cost to own, and performance.
I currently have a Amazon firetv stick. I have been on the fence about buying a game controller as it's $40.
I have seen many ADT-1s sell on eBay for less than $100 with a remote and game controller. It is my understanding that the memory on the adt1 is superior to the nexus player.
However I don't want to buy something that down the road won't be supported. My roku 2xd still works and gets updated. But once I used my firetv stick I was hooked on speed.
I prefer Google devices and love my Nexus 7 2013. It has lots of support too.
Bottom line, and sorry for taking over, but could someone advise me on if I'd be better buying a Nexus Player or adt-1. FYI I'm not a gamer and don't play them often. I prefer my NES and n64. In fact I'd probably love using n64/nes/snes/gbaoid on one of these android tv devices lol.

In my opinion, you should get either of these 3:
Mad Catz Mojo Tegra 4
Kepler GPU
£120
Razor Forge TV Snapdragon 805
Adreno 420 GPU
£100
Snail Games Obox Tegra X1
Kepler GPU
£150
Other consoles like Amazon fire TV, Ouya all have outdated specs and you will get a lot better quality with what I mentioned above.
Look up each console and decide what you want.
I personally, want an Obox for the raw power of the X1 soc.

It looks good, I'm not really a fan of mediatek chipsets though. But for £100 it's an OK price.
