I bought it about 9 months ago on Craigslist. I'll never do *that* again.
After I got it home, I noticed that the screen looks as if it has been replaced. A tiny bit of glue in the upper corner. Oh well. It was working fine. Or so I thought.
A few weeks ago, I started getting these strange vertical lines through the entire display. I couldn't figure out any pattern to it (time of day, temperature, etc.) It would usually go away within a few minutes.
Then today, I hit the power button to bring it out of "sleep" mode, and the screen flickered a few times... and died. I tried to power it back on; no dice. I pulled the battery and tried powering it on; no luck.
I plugged it into an AC charger and at least I saw the battery icon. I powered it on, and the screen flickered and died again.
Is this a known error or a simple fix? Do you need more information?
Sounds like a dead display, not a real common problem but it happens. You can replace the display which is not a huge deal but my concern is the glue you mention. That may make it a bit of a challenge to repair. Depending on what type, how much and where glue was put.
How much would a new display cost if I replaced it myself? How do I know it's just the display, not the digitizer or something else, etc.?
Check Ebay. Ebay is usually loaded with replacement screens/lcds. If you do buy from there make sure it is a Sprint variant of the SG4. There are suttle differences on the inside between GS4s. The lcd is the part you'll need to replace if necessary. I would advise, taking the display off first to inspect what the previous owner had done. It's entirely possible that the lcd cable ribbon is loose or not seated properly to the board.
The display will be the outer glass, digitizer and LCD all in one package. You can try to replace parts separately, but trust me it is not worth it. The outer glass is glued down to the digitizer, that is a real pita to get apart clean without damaging what is left. Then if you do manage to get it apart it may not function as well or be as durable as originally because the outer glass no longer makes contact with the whole digitizer. Think of it like a single piece of wood vs a laminate like plywood.
Granted it may not be the display (there is always a possibility it could be something else -like aliens) but most likely it will be the display. I would think of it this way- try to replace the display, if that does not work you can resell the display you just bought and you might be out $20- well worth it in my opinion.
Thanks for the info. Looks like the glass/digitizer/LCD will run me about $100, so I'm not sure it's worth it.
Does anyone have the link handy for the Galaxy S4 drivers so that I can get what I need off the phone?

I've followed instructions to take the motherboard out and put it back in. Is it difficult to ge the display off? Is the LCD cable ribbon easy to find?

Tonight I came home and turned on my phone just to find the screen is potentially broken.
Everything else works fine except the screen. Whenever I press the power button it gives me a black screen with a few lines on it. If I smack it a little then the lines change.
I'm wondering if it's just a lose ribbon cable or the screen is actually going bad.
I'd take it apart but I don't have the tools for it but if it's still as simple as that then tomorrow I'll just go buy a screw driver

OK 1st the LCD (and the digitiser incidentally) are not jaw & ribbon connectors but are pop connectors.
Look in the youtube i posted below.
I have had considerable experience digging around inside Desire Z's. In all honesty unless you dropped your phone its more than likely your LCD is fubared
Even if you did drop it its probably fubared ..... your starting to get the theme eh??
Whatever your LCD is probably fubared
However the good news is the Desire Z is the easiest phone I have ever dismantled/reassembled, as it is mostly held together by lots of high quality screws, so you don't need to take risks and get frustrated levering bits around to try and remove them.
Also LCDs are easily obtained and cheap.
Check this basic disassembly guide its the best i know.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-dR8CHEGjY&list=PLEBB8603769CE1417&index=16
This one below is stills only no vid, but it shows some small parts steps to in the above, defo 2nd best unless you want to remove small components
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SliyuYBvfic&list=PLEBB8603769CE1417&index=14
Oh yeah since you need to completely strip the Desire Z to replace LCD.
You may as well do something about that pesky weak hinge spring whilst you have it in bits.
This is a VERY worthwhile mod it takes 2 mins and transforms the keyboard hinge mechanism.
If you can't be bothered buying an upgraded spring (which is actually WELL WORTH IT) then you can just stretch the old spring and replace it to get a good result, just not as good as the upgraded spring.

Just be slow and careful, better it takes 2 hours to do a 10min job than 15mins and a busted smartphone component.
Hope this helps bro

hi, well, being the most unlucky person in the world, i too have had plenty of experiance dissmanteling the desire z. been through two phones, changed 2 digitizers, 2 LCDs, and now i have a broken flex ribbon cable (i know this for certain). i ordered the only one, as far as i can see, in the uk, which turned out to cause the phone to overheat when the screen was on. typical. sent it back, but the idiot sold the only other one he had to someone else when he knew i needed a replacement! sooo, without wanting to hijack this thread, does anyone know where i can source one it the uk? (the complete flex ribbon cable and hinge mechanism, as just the ribbon cable would be very tough to replace on its own without damaging something) many thanks..
Hello,
Unfortunately, I am in possession of a Galaxy S4 I9505 which has been dropped into water. It doesn't show any signs of live except a single vibrate after around 6 seconds of holding down the power button. Drying the device in rice hadn't helped, so I upped the ante and submerged the motherboard of the phone in ethanol as per the instructions of a revive-a-phone kit and left to dry for some time. After this it still didn't work, so I assumed that the motherboard was simply too damaged.
I had managed to buy another used phone (working, but with a smashed digitiser) and swapped over the motherboard from that one onto the new. Unfortunately though, it still doesn't work. I have disconnected all of the connections to the motherboard (the externals that is, camera etc) with the exception of the video cable and it still does the same thing.
Is there anything I am missing? Or does it look like the LCD is at fault? If so, would it be in any way possible to exchange the LCD without replacing the digitizer too?
I am sorry for the drawn out question, but any help would be very much appreciated!

AFAIK, digitizer is connected with LCD by some glue...
However, putting the phone into ethanol itself could potentially kill the phone, as it is a good solvent for any acrylic based paints, isolations etc...

I think the idea of it is that it will dissolve any deposits from the water that might be left on the motherboard. I had used it to some success on another phone, but no luck this time. In any case, it was only the motherboard that was submerged, not the entire phone as the guides would suggest, so that couldn't be the problem.
Agh, I see what you mean. I have gotten time to view some videos and it seems it is neigh on impossible to remove the screen from the digitizer. I bought a second phone with the only piece I needed being broken!
Dear xda,
while being on holiday in South-East Asia, I got into some pretty heavy rain and my OnePlus 2 obviously didn't like the rain - the display seems to be broken since. Unfortunately I tried switching the phone on shortly after the water contact (because I needed it for navigation) and the display worked just fine while the phone seemed to be stuck software-wise (although now from a retrospective point of view it could have been that already then the display was somehow having issues).
I did put it in dry, uncooked rice just a few hours after the water contact and kept it there for a few days, with the SIM-Tray ejected and the back cover taken off. Still, after a few days, I tried switching it on again and I could notice that is was booting up just fine (I could see the capacitative buttons lighting up and even got some notification sounds after it booted up), but the display remained black
Back home I removed not only the SIM-Tray and the back cover but also the "inside cover" as well as the battery (it then looked like THIS) and put the phone back into rice for another 2 days. After that I reassambled the phone and tried switching it on again - still the display wasn't working.
After disassembling the phone again and taking the battery out, I put the remaining parts of the phone into the oven at about 45°C = 113°F for about 2h. But that didn't help either.
Is there any advice as how to maybe get my display working again? Maybe some cable or connection inside the phone that I could inspect or disconnect and reconnect? The process of buying a display on eBay and replacing the display seems to be rather complicated (due to the fact that the display is glued to the frame as from what I could see on ifixit.com) and I don't want to damage more than I already did while maybe the repair attempt doesn't help at all.
Does anyone have any experience/insight regarding how much it would cost me to open a repair ticket with OnePlus and let them repair/replace my display unit?
Guess it would cost around 200USD since the display is one of the costliest components in the phone. Not sure if it's only the display issue though. The water might have done some serious damage to the board itself.
100$ easily
My replacement screen cost me 30$ including shipping to Sweden, bought on Aliexpress, top notch quality nothing to complain on quality wise .

I too considered buying a replacement screen on ebay or aliexpress. But I don't think I feel confident enough to take the necessary steps to replace the screen, because you seem to have to "unglue" the old screen and glue the new screen back on the frame (Sources: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/OnePlus+2+Screen+Replacement/51922#s115570 and https://youtu.be/Q1b5Ut5kTRM?t=4m).
Is it easier to do than I think? Did you face any issues while replacing it? Can you see or feel a difference with the new screen compared to the original one (i.e. does it perfectly fit into the frame without protruding)?

It was pretty straight forward and simple. I just applied heat to screen using a hairdryer and the used the included suction cup to gently loosed the screen from the adhesive using a credit hard to pry away the glue and then removed the connections to the screen and the touch-buttons and home button from the backside and then removed the screen. Then I moved over the home button and touch buttons to the new screen, applied some 3M adhesive strips on the frame after removing the old adhesive, put the screen back in place and reconnected the collectors, pushed the screen in place in the frame and heated it a bit too make sure the adhesive sticks and then screwed everything back in there and put on the back case. Done and done!
Ok I think I am gonny try tro buy a screen on aliexpress and replace it myself. Do you think this one should do?
well maybe you guys can help me out here i did the steps to replace the fingerprint sensor but now my screen wont stay glued , i have not been able to find the glue for the screen anyone can help with that by any chance ?

For me, the old adhesive came off with the old screen. But I did some cleaning with alcohol just to be sure.
Hey guys. I recently broke my LG V20 (AT&T varient.) It is just the top screen and not tbe LCD Digitizer. The 2nd screen is completly fine and its the main screen that's broken. Does anybody know a good tutorial and a good source to get tbe part ASAP?
Thanks in advanced.

As someone else said,youtube.
In the amount of time waiting for a reply, you could have just Googled the question.
And, the second screen, I do believe, is a single physical screen, partitioned by software. If one is trashed, both are I believe.
Thank you. I understand Youtube and Google. The problem with that is there are only like 3 videos, and each video the process is slightly different. When I try and search for the part, I find the glass/LCD digitizer ranging in price from $100-130. This is fine but the problem is I don't want to wait a few weeks to receive it, since all of the places I've found that sell it can't do expedited shipping, and if they do, they are all sold out. Lastly, I also found JUST the top layer of glass (no not a tempered glass protector, the actuall replacement) for only around $10-$20 in price, but there are ZERO videos on Youtube for that process, and a few people in the comments have even asked about this, with no luck.
A combo of multiple things....
This is a relatively new phone. Won't be lots of how tos available for one.
Second, what you are asking about is not a simple fix.
It requires either extreme cold such as, liquid nitrogen or 90% alcohol and dry ice cold. Or extreme heat. You either embrittle the glue with cold and peel it off in pieces or soften via heat and pull it loose in pieces. You run risk of killing your digitizer. Plan ahead accordingly.
You also *will* kill the polarizing layer in between digitizer and glass. Be prepared to replace this as well. Anyone who says otherwise is fibbing, IMO.
Then, you need something to remove the bubbles from the LOCA glue and gorilla glass sandwich.
Then reassemble.
Again: with the phones age, and a small supply chain in place due to the devices age, don't expect much in the way of how tos, or parts.
tl;dr
Not a simple fix. Chances are high you wont get it back to stock without a good technique and some moderately expensive tools.
Edited to add... There's a reason you find very few glass sellers, and lots of people selling digitizer/glass combos. .. The odds of a ****ed job are sky high, esp with phones with curved glass, like Samsung garbage.
On my V10 my front screen had cracked. Rather than try to replace just the digitizer I bought a dead V10 on eBay and replaced the full screen housing from that phone with my motherboard. Much easier to replace full screen assembly if you can find that way.

Fixez - LG V20 Screen with Frame
Just thought I would "help" other LG V20 owners; but I just finished replacing the screen on mine after dropping it on the concrete floor in the parking garage at work. It actually landed face down and I had a crappy Incipio case, so it was a spiderweb of cracks although it still ran fine for 3 months until the lines got thicker and thicker.
Anyway, I ordered a replacement Screen with Frame from Fixez.com and just know that it is NOT OEM or even close. I got my phone working; but just some notes for anyone else who finds this and tries to replace the screen themselves.
Most YouTube videos out there are NOT accurate and you will end up having to "move" extra parts they do not show.
I got the FRAME replacement; but I think it would have been BETTER without because all the tiny pieces are GLUED onto the frame.
You MUST have the tools, especially that tweezer one and get a Hair Dryer, because the parts are TINY and GLUED so easier to loosen.
I broke the Headphone Jack, because the connectors are basically membranes, which is why I think you should just replace SCREEN.
I forgot to clean my front facing camera; but I cleaned the two rears ones, so just make sure you "alcohol and air spray" clean before closing.
It is beyond blurry and I do not want to take it apart; but it could actually be the "low quality" peephole, which is creating "flare and blur".
Once I finished and turned it on, I was overjoyed; but after a week I can "see" more problems and just be aware that you really need OEM.
Problems:
Secondary Screen does not "show" when Main Screen is OFF; but it worked with original screen once option enabled. The top part is not white-white; but just a "hair off" and it is like an "oval thumb circle" and might have been "touched" during manufacture.Put some Arctic Silver CPU compound; because this "knock off" runs HOTTER and the first few boots felt like a "burn in" sequence. There is no LG Logo at the bottom of the screen; so if you decide to "sell" it later, then it will be obvious that you are selling "refurbished".The battery seems to drain faster; but I also noticed it does not "like" a FULL charge and runs nice and cold when lower battery charge.Headphone jack broken. Does not light up when I look at screen. Sometimes "double tap" (KNOCKON) does not work correctly.Sometimes I have to press Power Button twice to turn on screen. Sometimes it is once. Basically "sensors or integration" seem to have issues.I just miss how the "little things" used to work perfectly, even when it was cracked.
Basically, this screen feels like a cheap Chinese "knock off"; but I went for the "cheapest option" I found out there and you get what you pay for, so it works, but I hope this helps someone else out there to make an informed decision. Remember, Fixez (and ALL OTHERS) have a NO RETURN policy; because basically they state that it must be in NEW RESELLABLE condition and you are going to be sticking things, bending wires and removing plastic tabs. So do not listen to anyone and these repair shops will NOT return your money once you try to DIY.
If I had to do it again, then I would have spent more time looking for a screen with the LG Logo and at least try to get something with some OEM "guarantee or promise"; which Fixez NEVER made and I just went for Low Price and USA Based. Might have been better to get something OEM from Asia; because I got ganked anyway and I suspect this screen is going to shorten the lifespan of what was a beautiful LG V20 - H918 from T-Mobile.
:crying:
Does anyone know how to find a decent quality replacement of the glass and digitizer? I'll certainly keep the ease of 'no frame' in mind. I would like an oem product for sure. But I want my phone back asap, so I'll take what I can get
Attempted to replace the battery on my 6P tonight. The "dreaded" visor came off without an issue, as did the bottom cover.
Screws out, didnt lose any. used an iSclack like tool to try and pop the frame out and ended up separating the LCD glass. OK, so thats shot....ordered a new one, easy enough.
Now I have the phone plugged into USB, but no charging light. ADB shell couldnt find the device, but I managed to boot into bootloader (fastboot ftw). I dont know the order of the options in bootloader, though....does anyone have those? I somehow managed to get the phone file system to show via USB, copying everything off right now (already had a backup, but checking to make sure USB is still working on it). Obviously there is life to the phone if I can get into fastboot, but the lack of LED charging light worries me a little.
If the digitizer is shot, would that cause the LED to not work? I didnt think so, but figured Id ask.
And if anyone can tell me the order of the options in bootloader (Recovery Mode, etc) it would be appreciated. Would like to know that I didnt completely kill the phone, or else Ill cancel the order for a new digitizer.
Thanks in advance.

Hey, I'm kind of confused, you're not getting the LCD to turn on at all? What was it that you replaced? The top glass?
Did you maybe damage the ribbon under the battery?
LCD turns on but its like one or two lines of static across the screen. I wasn't replacing any screen part but it looks like the glass separated from the LCD and the LCD cracked. Once the glass separated it was done for anyway since it looks like a pita to replace just glass.
Ribbon cable is intact (screen was no longer working before I even attempted to remove battery), but replacement part comes with all new anyway
I did get the phone to boot up, recognized by adb eventually, and notification led, fingerprint scanner and vibration are all working. Looks like it'll be OK once screen is replaced. Not sure why adb didn't see it initially but it does now even after a couple shutdowns and reboots.

I doubt it's the GPU, you'd have other even weider issues. It's probably just a loose or corroded connection somewhere. The screens on these are not easy to work with, when I've fixed them, I just get the LCD/frame assembly.

Actually I do have a quesiton before I even start!
Since everything needs to be transferred over to the new frame, should I be replacing the thermal paste/pad that is on the back of the CPU board?

Yes definitely! Make a note of what the thermal paste touches on the old frame and apply a generous amount to the new. I didn't put enough the first time. Too much won't hurt it (try not to clog those little holes on the board above the CPU area though.) Too much won't really hurt anything, but it won't help.

Yeah I was able to order up some Noctua NH-T1 from Amazon. Expected delivery is Sunday...gotta love Prime!
So I got thermal PASTE, is that good enough for both outside AND inside the CPU cover? Looking at this mod since I have to have everything apart anyway: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guide-improve-cooling-greatly-reduce-t3323898 and they used thermal PAD for inside the CPU cover.
EDIT: I might not pull the CPU cover off....even in that thread the OPs cover looked pretty well connected to the CPU with the thermal whatever Huwai used. I think Ill stick to adding my thermal paste on top of the frame before putting the CPU board back in.
Thanks.
-Chris
You mean the metal cover over the CPU itself? That thermal paste should be fine. It's sealed away from dust, and the phone isn't super old, so it's very unlikely to have hardened. You should be fine with just putting it on the outside.
I attached a picture I just took of a 6P I'm working on. Just because it's my way doesn't mean it's the best. But I've had no issues with overheating. And it's very similar to how it came from Huawei (though they made a big mess with it.)
Thanks. Thats about what I planned on doing....Ive done computer CPUs before, the classic "grain of rice", I figure Ill tone it down a bit since this is smaller but since I have a brand new tube Ill put a grain of rice on, put the cover on then pull it off to see what kind of coverage I get.
Hopefully this all goes well and Ill get a working N6P today or tomorrow.
I needed more than I thought I would. There's a surprising amount of space between the two parts.
I figured as much. The hard mod thread has a lot of people up in arms about how much the OP used but it makes sense if there is that much gap between parts. I will just apply it then put the cover on and remove the cover to check the coverage pattern. Wipe it off and apply same amount if it works or a bit more if it didnt.
Chances are anything I do will be better than what Huwei did.
OK, I have begun.
I did NOT realize how much stuff needs to be transferred over! I got the mobo, front camera and headphone jack out. USB board and black piece over it are also both out, but I cant get out the following:
battery (?) that connects under the USB daughterboard. The battery is out of the holder, but I cant get the ribbon cable off...any tips?
volume/power button ribbon - I have no idea where to even start with this one....its covered in black plastic where it is exposed to the phone case, and a ribbon cable adhered to the plate. Again, any tips?
Thanks in advance.

Under the battery you must be referring to the display cable. I have always replaced the display with mid-frame so not sure how you get that out. I think the cable is glued to the mid-frame, some light heat might help and then work it loose with a playing card. It's looks quite hefty for a ribbon cable.
I have replaced the volume buttons. Start by lifting the connection off the mid-frame with a small flat tool. From there it's glued to the side of the sub-frame and there is two small parts of the volume assembly that fold over onto the frame. Have a look at the blown up image of a replacement so you know what you're up against.
