New here but thought Id share my experience of completely replacing the housing for my 10 month old X1. It can be done - even by a non techy person like me!!
Basically the keyboard was worn where it rubbed duiring open / close movement, the cover over the camera lense was cracked and there was general wear and tear. Could have sent it back under warranty but it would have taken an age and they would have charged me for all but keyboard probably.

Apparrantly when someone returns a phone during the 14 day money back period the innards get removed and put in a new case ready for resale. This guy buys the old cases. A real bargain I think as others are priced in the £50+ bracket.

You will also need to assemble some tools. You will allready have the special screwdriver needed for 2 of the screws in your phone (comes with your new case) but you will also need a small cross head watchamkers screw driver for all the rest. Additionaly I found that I used tweasers and a small pair of bull nose pliers. As I dont bite my nails lol, I managed to seperate the clip together casings using my thumbnail otherwise you will need a thin, stiff piece of plastic (they use what looks like a plectrum in vids) Finally and very importantly, you will need a workmat. Unlike on the video I discovered that things fall out of the phone when you take it apart and you definitely dont want them bouncing off a hard surface onto a floor never to be seen again!! I used a white towel for this.
Ok, I had to do mine twice before it was right so here are the reasons and I hope it means you will only have to go through it once!
1. When you take apart the back section of the phone buttons are likely to fall out / may not be present in new. Not sure which but found out camera button was missing only after I had completed reassembly!! No probs they just slot in and used one from the old case.
2. The little metal clips holding the battery cover in place can drop out. Watch out for these they are small and easily missed!
3. You have to pull apart a very small white electrical connection on the phone. Mine was very stubborn and in the end used the small bull nose pliers for better grip. It will come apart you just need to be firm and waggle it a bit!
4.When you take apart the front (screen) section of phone a small black rectangle of rubber falls out. Dont miss it as it keeps the optical joystick in place and gives it the push down springy effect. There is a similar shaped recess for it to fit in but I found that I had to make one side of it sticky in order for it to stay there during reassembley. After you finish assembling this bit check the joystick is properly in place and has that click feel - if not, that rubber pad is not right and you will need to re-do it.
5. Make sure you remove the speaker from the top part of the screen case (behind Sony Ericsson wording) from your old case and fit it in the new one. It just clips in and will come out with a little bit of gentle persausion and leverage. I didnt realise it was missing from my new case and panicked like mad when I couldnt hear anything on starting up!!
6. The most fiddely bit was attaching the ribon cable between the two parts. Take your time with this as you dont want to damage the connection by being too heavy handed. I discovered that the ribbon is longest when the phone is half closed/open. If you can keep it in that position you will have more ribbon to play with and it will be alot easier to lign the connection up.
Ok, the process isnt a walk in the park, I was nervous as hell doing mine (especially when it wasnt right the 1st time) but it wasnt half as bad as I thought so, it can be done....even by me lol!! and is well worth the effort - Good Luck
I have my case in a lil bad conditions and thought I would do the same as u did and change the case, but then I though I would wait a lil bit to get even worse, so that it'd be worth the hassle....
However since lately ma KeyBoard started going crazy, I decided to go with the video and open it to get some dust out....you won't believe it.....I got stuck at the very first step....can't remove the antenna cover, no matter what I do or use !!!

I really need to clean up my keyboard, but it is so complicated to do that, that I'll whait until it stops responding and then I'll try. Some keys are not fully functioning good anymore (you have to press harder to get the symbol), which it turned out to be a common issue with X1's keyboard. There are some cracks in the case ofcourse.
So I suppose, sooner or later I'll follow your lead on this
There are infact 4 vids - 2 disassembly and 2 assembly. Iff you are like me you will need all 4 lol. They are still up on the site I linked to, you just need to scroll down the menu of vids at the bottom right to find the X1 vids. The advatage with this is thay are all in one place, but the original source is YouTube.
darkhalf520, I can believe it!! I almost gave up a couple of times. With the clip on bits, sometimes you need to be quite firm with them

Not sure if it was clear on original post, but the new housing came with a keyboard also - mention this as keyboard probs seem to be quite common.

I have the same problem like you. the space-bar doesn't work so good any more. a friend of mine lost his whole keyboard. but i don't think you can clean it you have to replace youre keyboard. i replaced mine xperia case and still the you have to press really hard for the space. i think the keyboard ""dies"" but i'm not sure. does more people have this problem??

from my understanding, OEM means Original, those cases for the 22lbs are real, just used... if you see fascia some other place then its possible it could be one from some other maker, fascias dont always fit either

Yes thats right, the cases are genuine & come from phones returned by customers under the 14 day returns policy that some retailers have. The Grade A refers to the quality / condition. As I said the one I got was mint.

all done and I am sooo damn impressed. the black one looks better imho. the only problem I had, was that those two covers for screws next to camera were not included, so I had to paint my old ones black. after that I've used some clear nail top coat polish from my wife's drawer and it looks brand spanking new.

I maked my xperia also black. it is like you said it looks better and the same color problem with the two covers. but i have a hard case so this new Black wouldnt be damaged or get scratches.
Just changed mine from silver to black. looks the nutts , wasnt to tricky if u take ur time

Btw if anybody needs them there are Sony Ericsson's full disassembly and reassembly instructions at http://rapidshare.com/files/155696508/Guide_Working_Instructions_Mechanical_X1i.pdf.html . I found them much more useful than the video.
Still not for the fainthearted though. Bits have to be unstuck and restuck (some form of EM resistant tape) and the instructions leave you still with small bits of plastic stuck to the covers at the end. And now my earpiece buzzes most alarmingly. But I do have a fully chromed X1!
Also, attached is Sony Ericsson's software for testing all the features of X1, so that you can check everything works properly after you reassemble.
For those who replaced their X1 housing - How long did it take for the whole process?

So I was pretty careless and dropped my N1 in work, landing perfectly on it's screen It still functions perfectly and the AMOLED screen hasn't been damaged, simply the digitizer. I've already ordered a new one with all the tools necessary to replace it, but I'm yet to find any definitive guide on replacing the N1 digitizer.
I came across thread #751923 (Can't post links as I'm new) which seems really helpful but a guide with pictures/video would be awesome. There's a 45 step youtube vid on how to replace it as well but the quality/clarity isn't great. I'm sure I can use both of these to replace it just fine, It just seems a little daunting.
Basically I'm looking for consolation along the lines of 'It's damn easy to fix' Any love for a fellow N1-er?
It is easy to fix. Two tips: don't use metal spatulas to pry the plastic under the battery off and gently wiggle and push the motherboard out only after disconnecting all the little connectors on it.
Im also waiting on my digitizer. I'm going to folllow these 2 guides.

Have done it and you actually found better tear-downs and tutorials. Use youtube as well. The videos help because they show the techniques as well. Hardest part i would have to say is sliding the motherboard out the bottom under the metal separator. I think it was great and taught me a lot about my phone. The thing you have to watch out for is dust and fingerprints under the screen. Once it's on...it's on, anything underneath is stuck lol. make sure it's all clean and you won't have any annoyances like dust particles like i have.
I did it, mostly successful. I damaged the cable to the trackball, so be careful at that step, otherwise nothing difficult, just takes an hour or so.

I have replaced my digitizer. It cost me $45.00. It was challenging but not impossible. The hardest thing is not tearing any of the ribbons when dissasembling. It was a successful replacement. The only gripe I had was the digitizer I bought did not come with the adhesive to glue the digitizer to the frame. Make sure you have a way to attach the screen to the frame before you begin the process. Other than that it should be easy as long as you take your time.

I replaced mine.. it took a solid hour or so, just be very careful not to tear any of the ribbon cables.. everything is super small and delicate.
I now get lots of dust in the corners of my screen because i didn't seal the new digitizer properly, but its not a huge deal to me.
replacing the digitizer is easy... its taking apart, and putting the rest back together that sucks. just make sure you know what length screw goes in what hole... very important. take notes as you disassemble.

haha reminds me of when I took my laptop apart to re apply thermalpaste. I ended up with 7 extra screws >.< But the thing was together and has been running fine for the last 6 months so O.O
I did it, not too bad if you go slow and deliberately. I also have dust under my screen now. I sort of wish I would have just sent it to HTC but the money saved is worth a little dust.
A useful tip for disassembling is to cut out a paper template the same shape as your N1 and push the screws through it in positions corresponding to the screw holes in your N1. Its much easier to figure out where they all go when you come to reassembling it, just dont knock your template and screws on the floor .

That's a great idea, rob. I always think whenever I take apart a phone that I should have a video camera handy to record what I'm doing so I can play it in reverse when I'm putting it back together
For $115 you can send your phone back to HTC and have a QUALIFIED technician replace your screen.
Yes, it's a little more but you don't have to worry about messing anything else up and you're getting back your phone without any installation flaws.
Well I eventually got my digitizer this morning. It took until I had everything taken apart to realise they had sent me a compatible but ill fitting digitizer. It doesn't even have the appropriate buttons (it did in the selling image) at the bottom. At this point everything works fine but it doesn't look perfect. I guess it'll have to do, thanks for the advice guys

Wow thats cheap, I just got quoted for around $300US to fix my phones screen.. not including labor.. argh
Does anyone know if HTC in america repair phones from the other side of the world even though they were purchased from google's store?
I just sent my phone into HTC to be repaired for a cracked screen expecting it to be $115 and was pleasantly surprised to find that it would only be $55 including shipping! HTC was also extremely quick to get back with me for the quote. I sent the phone out Tuesday at 4pm and they have looked at it and quoted me the repair cost by Wednesday at 2 pm.
I recently cracked my digitalizer as well.
I called HTC 2 times without giving any information about myself before calling a 3rd time to do the actual swap.
I was quoted at $115 for me to send in my N1, wait a week without a phone, and have them replace the digitalizer, before shipping it back.
I then further inquired and found out they have a Swap program where they mail you a new(refurbished, but perfect) phone, and a FedEx label, which they still quoted me $115 to fix the screen, and a possible $275 if they needed to replace the logicboard, but they would get a quote back to me with all the things they would need to replace. It would require a $529 charge to my card, incase i didnt send the phone back at all.
I mentioned that my camera was broken, as well as my trackball was loose, and he said the quote would include this as well.
I called back a 3rd time, requested a swap phone, and had one 2 days later.
i mailed my phone into HTC, and two days later i had my quote.
I paid $55 after it was said and done, and have a new (refurbished) phone
I was rooted,unlocked, and running Kang-O-Rama 1.0 when i shipped the phone in. I didnt bother to fix that.
Has there been a decent guide on taking the 4G apart yet? I've googled it but haven't been able to find anything yet.

I cant fine one either but there are 2 screws in the battery compartment and it looks like the metal portion where the camera is may pop or peel off with a little force. My guess, try to remove metal portion where camera is, if it comes off and exposes screws remove those along with 2 in bat compartment then use tool to try and separate where bezel and rubber surround are. Just fumble it.
May I ask why your taking it apart?
Stupid reason really, I was going to see if the ffc could be centered better. Seems just about all of the MT4G phones have an off-centered camera, and wanted to see if I could move it back to center myself. I was just curious to see what was throwing it off.
I had the two screws off last night, but couldn't get anything to come off. Didn't want to force it and break anything, I was just hoping a teardown had been done showing what needed to be done.

I don't think a phone exists that you dont have to pry, push, pull and force things to get them apart. There will ALWAYS be risk of breaking things when taking a phone apart. I would just deal with it and not open the phone. Plus, they usually have a way to tell if you've opened your phone so you will void your warranty.
There is a "void" sticker on one of the screws. If someone does open her up, check to see if you could replace the speaker with a better one from another phone.

I'm curious to learn how to take the phone apart as well, because I'd like to figure out how to make the damn buttons stop squeaking & clicking so loudly (home/menu/back/genius). It's driving me insane and I'm already on my third MT4G.

Anyone? I'm now on my fourth MT4G and will be receiving a fifth one shortly (creaking buttons), and if I experience that same problem I'm thinking about trying to fix the damn thing myself.

I don't remember the steps but I do remember there are a couple key points, including ribbons that have to be disconnected. The ribbon connector from the main display to the main board is junk and that, of all places, is where my tear down went south.
I've got 450.00 dollars sitting in pieces if anyone wants to see them.

You must never have had a MT3G. These buttons are a dream compared to the creaky clickers in that dog.
I bought a refurbished phone on Craigslist and there are fingerprints on the inside of the glass (I don't know why I never saw them when I was inspecting). Would like to teardown guide so I can go clean those prints off.
Lil bit of thread necromancy here, but did anybody ever find a teardown? I'm thinking of ripping mine open due to my backlight issue ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=958033 ). I guess if nobody else has a teardown, I'll have to brave the waters and post my own, but going in blind is going to increase the risk of me killing the thing even worse than it already is

Phew. Just replaced my digitizer using the latter video. Putting it back together was fairly straight-forward by just following the video backwards, though a 'put back together' video would be convenient.
A couple minor caveats:
They skipped showing some phillips screws holding the motherboard in place (near the end). I think there were two of them. They're fairly obvious if you know to look for them.
I attempted to reuse the existing adhesive by reheating and applying pressure. This sort of worked, but the digitizer seems a tad loose. I don't think it's going to fall off, but it'd probably be better to remove the old adhesive and apply some fresh adhesive. Anyone know where to get a suitable adhesive?
Taking apart the MyTouch 4G is not that hard
I bought a used MyTouch 4G in pieces on Craigslist for $ 45 that had a broken digitizer (about $ 20 on eBay with free shipping) and LCD (about $ 40 on eBay with free shipping) and the Audio & Volume Button Flex Cable (about $ 38 on eBay with free shipping) was also defective (the power button cable was ripped which can happen very easily if you take the phone apart and if you are not 100% careful when you pry the power button cable out). I ordered all the replacement parts on eBay from US sellers.
This particular phone had the "bad", washed out screen and was manufactured in Taiwan. When I ordered the replacement LCD and digitizer, I was hoping to get the "good", bright and superior screen but that didn't happen. So for the ones out there who are hoping to improve the screen by replacing the LCD and/or digitizer, it's a 50/50 shot.
I also ran into the problem with the adhesive and found a roll of 3M 2mm double sided tape for $ 10 with free shipping on eBay. The phone is working great and looks like nothing ever happened now after I put it all back together. And even though I had to pay for a lot of replacement parts, it was still a lot cheaper than buying a new one from T-Mobile or a used one on Craigslist or eBay
There are also a lot of MyTouch 4G disassembly videos on youtube. I'm a gal and if I can do it, you can too !!
I bought it about 9 months ago on Craigslist. I'll never do *that* again.
After I got it home, I noticed that the screen looks as if it has been replaced. A tiny bit of glue in the upper corner. Oh well. It was working fine. Or so I thought.
A few weeks ago, I started getting these strange vertical lines through the entire display. I couldn't figure out any pattern to it (time of day, temperature, etc.) It would usually go away within a few minutes.
Then today, I hit the power button to bring it out of "sleep" mode, and the screen flickered a few times... and died. I tried to power it back on; no dice. I pulled the battery and tried powering it on; no luck.
I plugged it into an AC charger and at least I saw the battery icon. I powered it on, and the screen flickered and died again.
Is this a known error or a simple fix? Do you need more information?
Sounds like a dead display, not a real common problem but it happens. You can replace the display which is not a huge deal but my concern is the glue you mention. That may make it a bit of a challenge to repair. Depending on what type, how much and where glue was put.
How much would a new display cost if I replaced it myself? How do I know it's just the display, not the digitizer or something else, etc.?
Check Ebay. Ebay is usually loaded with replacement screens/lcds. If you do buy from there make sure it is a Sprint variant of the SG4. There are suttle differences on the inside between GS4s. The lcd is the part you'll need to replace if necessary. I would advise, taking the display off first to inspect what the previous owner had done. It's entirely possible that the lcd cable ribbon is loose or not seated properly to the board.
The display will be the outer glass, digitizer and LCD all in one package. You can try to replace parts separately, but trust me it is not worth it. The outer glass is glued down to the digitizer, that is a real pita to get apart clean without damaging what is left. Then if you do manage to get it apart it may not function as well or be as durable as originally because the outer glass no longer makes contact with the whole digitizer. Think of it like a single piece of wood vs a laminate like plywood.
Granted it may not be the display (there is always a possibility it could be something else -like aliens) but most likely it will be the display. I would think of it this way- try to replace the display, if that does not work you can resell the display you just bought and you might be out $20- well worth it in my opinion.
Thanks for the info. Looks like the glass/digitizer/LCD will run me about $100, so I'm not sure it's worth it.

I've followed instructions to take the motherboard out and put it back in. Is it difficult to ge the display off? Is the LCD cable ribbon easy to find?
Attempted to replace the battery on my 6P tonight. The "dreaded" visor came off without an issue, as did the bottom cover.
Screws out, didnt lose any. used an iSclack like tool to try and pop the frame out and ended up separating the LCD glass. OK, so thats shot....ordered a new one, easy enough.
Now I have the phone plugged into USB, but no charging light. ADB shell couldnt find the device, but I managed to boot into bootloader (fastboot ftw). I dont know the order of the options in bootloader, though....does anyone have those? I somehow managed to get the phone file system to show via USB, copying everything off right now (already had a backup, but checking to make sure USB is still working on it). Obviously there is life to the phone if I can get into fastboot, but the lack of LED charging light worries me a little.
If the digitizer is shot, would that cause the LED to not work? I didnt think so, but figured Id ask.
And if anyone can tell me the order of the options in bootloader (Recovery Mode, etc) it would be appreciated. Would like to know that I didnt completely kill the phone, or else Ill cancel the order for a new digitizer.

Hey, I'm kind of confused, you're not getting the LCD to turn on at all? What was it that you replaced? The top glass?

LCD turns on but its like one or two lines of static across the screen. I wasn't replacing any screen part but it looks like the glass separated from the LCD and the LCD cracked. Once the glass separated it was done for anyway since it looks like a pita to replace just glass.
Ribbon cable is intact (screen was no longer working before I even attempted to remove battery), but replacement part comes with all new anyway
I did get the phone to boot up, recognized by adb eventually, and notification led, fingerprint scanner and vibration are all working. Looks like it'll be OK once screen is replaced. Not sure why adb didn't see it initially but it does now even after a couple shutdowns and reboots.

I did get the phone to boot up, recognized by adb eventually, and notification led, fingerprint scanner and vibration are all working. Looks like it'll be OK once screen is replaced. Not sure why adb didn't see it initially but it does now even after a couple shutdowns and reboots.

Will do. Im hopeful its just the LCD at this point (not sure anything else display-wise would cause this issue, maybe the GPU?) and Ill be good to go once its replaced.
New part should be here Saturday so Ill find out this weekend.

I doubt it's the GPU, you'd have other even weider issues. It's probably just a loose or corroded connection somewhere. The screens on these are not easy to work with, when I've fixed them, I just get the LCD/frame assembly.

Actually I do have a quesiton before I even start!
Since everything needs to be transferred over to the new frame, should I be replacing the thermal paste/pad that is on the back of the CPU board?

Yes definitely! Make a note of what the thermal paste touches on the old frame and apply a generous amount to the new. I didn't put enough the first time. Too much won't hurt it (try not to clog those little holes on the board above the CPU area though.) Too much won't really hurt anything, but it won't help.

Darn, I dont have any thermal paste. Will have to order some up I guess.
Best Buy sells it..I think. It keeps the processor from overheating. So it's necessary, unfortunately.

Yeah I was able to order up some Noctua NH-T1 from Amazon. Expected delivery is Sunday...gotta love Prime!
So I got thermal PASTE, is that good enough for both outside AND inside the CPU cover? Looking at this mod since I have to have everything apart anyway: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guide-improve-cooling-greatly-reduce-t3323898 and they used thermal PAD for inside the CPU cover.
EDIT: I might not pull the CPU cover off....even in that thread the OPs cover looked pretty well connected to the CPU with the thermal whatever Huwai used. I think Ill stick to adding my thermal paste on top of the frame before putting the CPU board back in.

You mean the metal cover over the CPU itself? That thermal paste should be fine. It's sealed away from dust, and the phone isn't super old, so it's very unlikely to have hardened. You should be fine with just putting it on the outside.
I attached a picture I just took of a 6P I'm working on. Just because it's my way doesn't mean it's the best. But I've had no issues with overheating. And it's very similar to how it came from Huawei (though they made a big mess with it.)
Thanks. Thats about what I planned on doing....Ive done computer CPUs before, the classic "grain of rice", I figure Ill tone it down a bit since this is smaller but since I have a brand new tube Ill put a grain of rice on, put the cover on then pull it off to see what kind of coverage I get.
Hopefully this all goes well and Ill get a working N6P today or tomorrow.
I needed more than I thought I would. There's a surprising amount of space between the two parts.
I figured as much. The hard mod thread has a lot of people up in arms about how much the OP used but it makes sense if there is that much gap between parts. I will just apply it then put the cover on and remove the cover to check the coverage pattern. Wipe it off and apply same amount if it works or a bit more if it didnt.
Chances are anything I do will be better than what Huwei did.

I did NOT realize how much stuff needs to be transferred over! I got the mobo, front camera and headphone jack out. USB board and black piece over it are also both out, but I cant get out the following:
battery (?) that connects under the USB daughterboard. The battery is out of the holder, but I cant get the ribbon cable off...any tips?
volume/power button ribbon - I have no idea where to even start with this one....its covered in black plastic where it is exposed to the phone case, and a ribbon cable adhered to the plate. Again, any tips?

Under the battery you must be referring to the display cable. I have always replaced the display with mid-frame so not sure how you get that out. I think the cable is glued to the mid-frame, some light heat might help and then work it loose with a playing card. It's looks quite hefty for a ribbon cable.
I have replaced the volume buttons. Start by lifting the connection off the mid-frame with a small flat tool. From there it's glued to the side of the sub-frame and there is two small parts of the volume assembly that fold over onto the frame. Have a look at the blown up image of a replacement so you know what you're up against.
