Should I update? - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am currently running pure NCG and don't have any problems to speak of, the only thing I have done is root. My question is, is there any benefit to upgrading at this time, any gray advantage? Or should I wait?
Oh, and is there any easy way of flashing just the kernel, I'm using Mac OSX 10.6.8 and there isn't an Odin I'm aware of or equivalent. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Heimdall is the only option for flashing as far as i know but im not sure if it works, there are some forks on the github you can try and see if they work.

You can use JOdin3 for the smaller files but it won't work with the full tar the last I tried.

Neither Jodin or Heimdall work on OSX 10.6.8. I guess I'm out of luck until I get a new computer.

DON'T run odin in a vm, almost always leads to issues, you have chances of being worse of then where you started from what ive read, even then if it does work fine its hit or miss.

They both require java 7 or higher, on OSX 10.6.8 you can't install higher than java 6.

You can use heimdall but don't know how install it and having graphic UI...odin can works with wine but personally my phone wasn't detected by the software,so i advice you to flash with windows is the easiest way ;-)

tried it but wine doesn't support usb
I heard about heimdall too.
Trying to get the usb to work in wine. Had to install some stupid drivers on my old windows too so...
check it wiki_winehq_org/USB
(replase _ on .)
heimdall seems to be written for the SGS, it might work for our phone too, but that probably depends on how its flashed, ie. the partitioning. If the ops files for both phones are the same (or its the same for what parts of the firmware we would flash) it should work. If somebody has tried it with our phone I'd gladly like to know, since I also use linux (dual-boot) and i would definitely flash more (like I used to) if I could flash in linux.
I'll probably do some research and then try flashing on monday if nobody comes forth with their experiences.
P.S. I guess a virtual machine would also work, if you want to bother with that.
edit: heimdall is not our solution

Hi all,
I'm trying to upgrade firmware with Heimdall on a Samsung Galaxy i5800. I boot it into download mode with home+menu+volume down+power, then start heimdall, which says:
Claiming interface... Success
Setting up interface... Success
Beginning session...
Handshaking with Loke... Failed!
What am I doing wrong?
TIA!
edit: I enabled verbose mode, and now I see the error:

Sorry Heimdall only supports Galaxy S devices. Unfortunately older series of phones use a different version of the Loke flashing protocol.

Unfortunately, no. Heimdall only supports Galaxy S devices. Other devices still seem to be using an older version of the flashing protocol, which is quite different.

Any way to flash these on Linux? Ubuntu 13.10 to be exact. I get an error every time I try to flash system. I really, really do not want to install Windows on my computer. Every other phone I've owned, it's been no problem until the moto x. I have fastboot installed from android tools. So I think that's why I'm getting an error. I need the Motorola fastboot which I have, but I don't know how to make it so the terminal uses it instead of the system fastboot.

I tried it already doesn't help.
Having the same issue, tried Heimdall and jOdin, no luck.
No thinking of virtualbox + Win7 + Odin
What browser did you try, I was reading on jodin and it said to try with firefox (I used chrome)
Cant try it yet as I am reinstallin heimdall and going to give it a try.

Didnt see an actual Chainfire CF-Autoroot post is all.
I'm rooted with the tmo version but I'll try this one too. I have a bad stutter constantly and wonder if that has anything to do with it
So has anyone try rooting using this method?

Did you install the Samsung USB drivers?
Have you tried a different USB port on your pc?
If that doesn't work try to Uninstall amd reinstall the Samsung USB drivers.
Anyone else notice tremendous lag after rooting this phone?
Mine has significantly slowed down and lags constantly where as before it was lightning quick. Any fixes for this?
Mine does that no matter which root I used

Yep.... Is that the cause?
I rooted with the T-mo version of chainfire (before the Sprint version was available).
How do I revert/unroot to stock so I can then root via the Sprint version?

Many times where? I've only been in this forum with not one mention. That's fine I did an Odin reflash of the stock rom, so all is good again

Look in the "Note 4 is rooted" thread or almost every other thread that mentions lagging while rooted -- it's been clearly defined as being Xposed causing it at the moment. Root on it's OWN should never cause any lagging issues like that.

Yes, everyone needs to quit asking that. And no there will most likely never be a way to root without tripping it, so just root.

Rooting custom rom and recovery on a mac

Hi all
How are you?
I'm wondering as to whether I can root and install a recovery and custom rom on my galaxy s5 sm-g900i using a mac pc I've read about the installation of Heimdall though it appears to be incompatible with my mac El capitan osx.
If I could get some guidance it would be much appreciated.
Thank you.

Thanks for that.
I have though unfortunately I'm unable to install this Heimdall which appears to be incompatible with my mac version El Capitan. I think that I'll head over to mums house and download Odin and attempt to install TWRP on a Windows PC.
Oh, yeah man. If all it takes for you is a drive and for you to use your moms computer, just do that. Far simpler IMHO.
Thanks will do, I'll close this thread, I need to ask a separate question in another thread now as I'm still slightly confused (though for a different issue).
