You can use heimdall but don't know how install it and having graphic UI...odin can works with wine but personally my phone wasn't detected by the software,so i advice you to flash with windows is the easiest way ;-)

I heard about heimdall too.
Trying to get the usb to work in wine. Had to install some stupid drivers on my old windows too so...
check it wiki_winehq_org/USB
(replase _ on .)
heimdall seems to be written for the SGS, it might work for our phone too, but that probably depends on how its flashed, ie. the partitioning. If the ops files for both phones are the same (or its the same for what parts of the firmware we would flash) it should work. If somebody has tried it with our phone I'd gladly like to know, since I also use linux (dual-boot) and i would definitely flash more (like I used to) if I could flash in linux.
I'll probably do some research and then try flashing on monday if nobody comes forth with their experiences.
P.S. I guess a virtual machine would also work, if you want to bother with that.
edit: heimdall is not our solution

Sorry Heimdall only supports Galaxy S devices. Unfortunately older series of phones use a different version of the Loke flashing protocol.

Unfortunately, no. Heimdall only supports Galaxy S devices. Other devices still seem to be using an older version of the flashing protocol, which is quite different.

Hi ,
I turn on Download mode on my Nexus S .
Odin detected my phone , but I haven't Firmware to upload..
Maybe this method will be help to fast root Nexus S in future ?
The nexus s is already rooted.
And there is no reason to use this ever. (just install the rom through recovery)
unless I am missing something????
My objective when I bought the Nexus and sold my Galaxy S was to remove Odin/Kies from my life
I would like to never hear again these words
Ok , but in my opinion root as Odin is simply I look for Firmware with Polish language , but probably does not exist. In SGS I upload Firmware as Odin and I have Polish language. Now I have Nexus S from USA and it hasn't Polish.
You're not going to get a download mode on this device. I appreciate your dilemma, but 99.9% of us are overjoyed we don't have to deal with that methodology. The less Samsung this phone feels the better.
I would post in the Google forums and see if you can get a Google employee/dev to address your request.
Wrong forum.
Odin is really not that bad. Its a really easy way getting back to stock and makes the device practically not brickable.

The Nexus S is "practically not brickable" as well. Flash a new image via fastboot.
Fastboot just as easy to use as Odin, and in fact easier, since it can be used on any platform (Windows, Mac, Linux) and doesn't require Windows-based buggy software and drivers to talk to the phone.
As a Mac owner, I for one am glad to have no need for Odin any more...
To the original poster looking for Polish...the Nexus S is setup totally different than the SGS line of phones. You're not going to be able to push some currently available SGS Polish enabled ROM to the NS and get it to work.
LOL,
Really dude? Odin is pointless, and certainly isn't simple when you compare it with the mere 5-6 lines of terminal commands required to root your Nexus S. Not to mention there's already a 1-click rooting tool out, so unless ODIN can get you a zero-click root, this is just useless.

There's another thread about this right in this forum...it ends with a post from a guy with only one post on xda that says yes, you can get into DL mode. No one asked for more details there...
I tried a couple of known 3-button combos from other devices, and even a "su reboot download" from the terminal. None of them got me into DLM.

after all the SNS is part of the Galaxy S family
Odin detect 4 ports when you connect SNS.
Is possible move one file (Polish language pack) from SGS to Nexus S ?
I agree with everyone who dislikes Odin. It's almost a surefire way to brick your damn phone because the app is so unstable! I'm no n00b, but I bricked my Vibrant...twice. Never had an issue via fastboot with my N1 or NS. It's so easy, fast, cross-platform...it's darn near perfect.
Coming from vibrant and plenty of expirience ...Its impossible to brick with Odin and Odin is a no brainer easy to use and very quick to use to flash. But IMO no need for it on NS

1: Integrates Unbrick / Flash ROM / Root All-In-One.
2: Use the same protocol as ODIN, but 2nas is more user-friendly and easy-to-use.
3: Cloud based database to flash your android phone with correct files(ROM, etc)
4: Automatically download necessery files to flash, and check them with SHA1, it's safe for your phone.
5: Store all downloaded files in local disk, under a good directory structure, it's usefull when you have several phones.
Re: Cloud-based Android Flash Tools
So you are having people flash their phones over the internet? What if the net disconnects? I hope the service is free ....and is this service even necessary. Flashing roms sometimes ends up in problems and you have to flash again, isn't it better to just use Odin and have the roms on a pc?

ROM matching is base on the Cloud. When I add New-ROMs or New-Flash-Instructions, you needn't to download this software again
Why not have a try? ^&^

Add Instruction-Webpages to avoiding mis-operation.
Can't get it.

I flashed a wrong ROM, so I still can get to the download but not into recovery mode.
I download the USB driver and your software........and then ????

Unbrick failed
As mentioned before I couldn't install 2nas software on my company laptop, but in the meanwhile I borrowed one and tried the unbrick function.
Everything worked well till I started the installation after the download, so it failed straight away at the flashing of the boot.img, see attached screenshots.
Initial rom on my S3 was I9300XXLEF (Hong Kong) and I flashed Samsung Galaxy S III GT-I9300 Stock Firmware Collection I9300XXEMA2 after that it didn’t re-boot because of wrong ROM, if I try to get into recovery it shows the “Firmware upgrade encountered issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again” screen..

But, as I see, reading with understanding is beyond your abilities, instead, you are very keen to abuse someone.

THIS PROJECT WAS DROPPED.
Use MBN Creator instead. It can SAFELY flash MBNs.
This is empty ROM made to flash CSC (.mbn) without huge .wp8 file. It can be used to flash MBN on phones where .wp8 isn't available (Odyssey, Neo...).
This ROM is only safe for GT-I8750, cause if you do something wrong, you are still able to flash full normal ROM. You can use this small file to flash my custom CSC, if you don't want to store full 1.5 GB ROM on your HDD.
How to use it:
Choose this ROM as first file in Downloader, and MBN as second
Choose "Select" in "DL option"
Uncheck all partitions, except CSC
Boot your phone into Download Mode and connect it to PC
Click "Start"
Downloader will ask you "Download all binary?". Click "NO"
Hold "lock" key to reset your phone
Do Hard Reset to apply custom CSC
This ROM shouldn't be flashed! Or you turn your phone into a brick. Be careful.
Supported models:
GT-I8675
GT-I8750
SCH-I930
SGH-I187
SGH-T899M
SPH-I800

Maybe this will help http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2685551 The download link in the thread also contains the CSC files from my Odyssey. Sorry, I would've got these to you directly but din't want to bug you for "custom roms" and posted in General sub forum as not to clutter the forums up more than they already are.
PS The text file in the zip is just the current info on my phone from reading CSC with diagnostic tool and NOT included in the files taken from the CSC folder I got off the phone using the Native Access Server app.

Do you have T899M? Can you help me test this ROM?
I do, but I'm not willing to hard-reset at this time unless vitally important. Too many in-progress experiments.
If I have to reset for some other reason (such as an experiment rendering the phone unbootable), I'll try this out. Generally speaking, though, I prefer to work from stock ROMs (with run-time modifications only) where possible.
Okay... I'm having trouble finding where the latest flasher app is at. I have the tool with odyssey support, but I can't seem to get it to take the driver on 8.1 even in Driver Test Mode.... I first tried it on x64, and I'll try later on x86.
EDIT: Okay... I got it working on the Venue 8 Pro (8.1x86)
Which ROM do I need to flash? I see one for the I8750 and the T899M. Or is it that you need the included? I believe the CSC might need to stay VZW, but can you overwrite an existing CSC? Anyways, the entire CSC folder has been attached for simplicity.

Heimdall is the only option for flashing as far as i know but im not sure if it works, there are some forks on the github you can try and see if they work.
