I recently bought new tab, it is getting charged normally when plugged in power socket. But when i plug it in laptop USB port or any PC port, it would not charge instead I can transfer data etc. I am using the original USB cable which came in box. Does any one has faced same issue?

Samsung have engineered it so you have to even use their mains charger. Car chargers and wall chargers have to be Samsung tab brand. Not sure but there is talk of AVUSB charge cable being released. Pretty sure this has already been covered.
Turn off the screen and wifi and data network and it will charge very slowly over usb.

The fact of the matter is the tablet requires more/not the right amount of power that your USB port can deliver.
We always here all these theories about why.. but here is the simple and only reason why.
To keep the techinical stuff short and simple, Li-Poly and other batteries have a predetermined lifetime and one of the determining factors to how long they last is the rate of charge (charge rate) time and the exact amount of mHa capacity of the battery.
This is NOT a Samsung marketing scheme as it is exactly the same reason the iPad cannot be charged through USB.
I'll give you a quick example:
If you buy rechargable batteries, Ni-Mh that state they can be charged at 2500mHa (capacity/rate) and you charge them on a 15 minute charger that delivers the right amount of power (1.2 volts) and not the correct rate (lets say they are rated for 2500 and you use a charger thats rated for more) this causes the battery life to be deminished drasitcally.
If you charge the same 2500mha batteries with a lower rating charger, they will take a lot longer to charge completely since it is at a slow mHa, but also this slower charging will provide a longer battery life.
Therefore their charger (and this is the reason why you must use their charger or any charger with the same mHa rating) is made to provide the optimal amount of charge rate (mHa) giving you the best battery life vs charge time.
In conclusion the Tabs hardware will limit the rate of charge through USB in order to:
a) Not overload the power on your USB, given that all this varies according to each system configuration (although it should not! but reality is.. it does)
and
b) In order to not improperly charge your tab, reducing your battery life.
I know the technical parts are vaguely/poorly explained but I work with Li-Po and other types so this is the simplest way to explain all this without causing too much confusion.

Not true.
Samsung is using standard chargers that are wired to identify themselves as high current chargers. A non Samsung charger / external battery will likely have the same wiring because this wiring is part of the usb-specification.
The Tab will even charge from your usb-port but only slowly and if you turn off the screen since usb-ports only have 500mA (the charger has 2A).
So all the Tab does is check for this high-power-wiring. If it detects it it shows you the charge-icon, if it doesn't it assumes a usb-connection to your computer and does not pretend to charge (even if it does).
Interesting! So then a generic car cig lighter accessory with a standard USB port on it should charge it as a high output conection, right?
I am able to charge my Tab using usb connection to my PC by turning the device off. Same with an Energizer XP8000 external battery. Leaving the device on will take a long time to charge or not at all if you are using it while charging.
Earlier I was nokia N86 user. Charger of that phone is same like SGS2. I charged my SGS2 with that charger. And I got the feeling that it was faster than original SGS2 charger.

i have a nokia n97 mini charger which i use to charge my SGS2. It is indeed faster. But i guess it is because the nokia charger is capable of 1.2 A against only 0.7 A for the Samsung charger. Keep in mind that the voltage is the important number when matching chargers.
Both chargers are 5 V. Having higher A number means the charger is capable of giving out more power (power = V x A), power is energy rate (how much energy per second delivered). That is why Nokia's charger is faster, because it can give enery at a faster rate

Yes, Price been issuing an (I think 1amp) old htc charger. Not sure I notice a difference in charge speed, though its possible it still helps when running flash, oced etc by helping power the phone more so the battery isn't picking up the slack and can maintain charging without load. And no more amps can't hurt,a load will pull what it needs (more volts WOULD be am issue) Its like a 1200 watt pc power supply to run grandmas pentium computer wouldn't hurt it, just be under utilized. Make sense?

Are you surprised it charges faster? I'm socked that my SGSII charger only throws out 700mA.
What are they playing at giving "travel charger" in the box?
The charge speed is directly related to the current output of the charger in use, as long as the phone is designed to accept a current higher than the lowly 700mA the standard one outputs.
With a 1A charger you should get (in theory) ~43% faster charging, assuming the phone and battery can draw that much current to charge.
Let's hope the phone supports this:
In Battery Charging Specification,[38] new powering modes are added to the USB specification. A host or hub Charging Downstream Port can supply a maximum of 1.5 A when communicating at low-bandwidth or full-bandwidth, a maximum of 900 mA when communicating at high-bandwidth, and as much current as the connector will safely handle when no communication is taking place; USB 2.0 standard-A connectors are rated at 1.5 A by default. Havent done any test but my old blackberry charger, charges the phone faster. Anything is faster than the stock charger.

Hmm im interested in this thread, somebody with an electrical background should chime in on if its totally safe or not to use a charger with more current output.

Me too i saw a quickly charge with n97 charger.
But, with the original one, you gain like 1/2 hours of autonomy.
Quick charger = less time to charge the buttery but less time on battery
Slow charger = more time to charge buttery but more time of autonomy
The best should be charging the phone in offline mode using the computer

I think it should be fine, i used another charger on my old HD2 for most of the time i had it (a year and a half) after i lost the original and never had any issues.
So can someone give a list of what chargers would charge the phone faster than the one that came with it.

The phone apparently limits the charging current to 650mA no matter the charger. Not sure I'd want to be the one testing increasing the cap though

I have a Verizon Galaxy Tab 7.7 i815.
It's an amazing tablet for video playback because of the large AMOLED screen. Comparable to plasma screens.
So, the problem I have is that while it's great for this, it is also extremely picky on the charger. Basically, the only thing I can get to recharge this is with the Samsung usb charger that plugs into power.
It will not even charge from the computer.
And of course, it refuses to charge from portable power banks. This is kind of a big deal because the battery life of this tablet is pretty bad, so being able to use a power bank would be great.
Any idea why this is? How to fix? Maybe I just have a bad unit? What's going on?

You need an adapter to charge with computer or battery or anything besides the stock charger. I was trying to find one on ebay without success. I will look again. The one I have is made by Pizen and was $2.

Mine (a P6800) charges normally from USB (only with the screen off and charges VERY slowly, though; despite the battery icon showing an "X") and from my power bank. That power bank is chinese, got it from DealExtreme, and puts out 2A of current (the same as the stock charger). The battery icon also shows an "X" when charging from it, though.
Are you sure it doesn't charge? Or does it display an "X" but still charges when not in use?

Just for info.
The stock kernel will allow only USB charge at a rate of 450mA, regardless of a power bank or PC USB connection. Max AC is 1500mA.
my P6800/P6810 SkyHigh kernel will USB charge up to AC max (1500mA), using same device circuitry. The kernel is also modded to allow charging icon animation when connected to USB power source. This is because it thinks the source is AC. There are no System.UI.apk changes needed

AC max is 1.5A? Weird... The charger is good for 2A, and we've got more than enough battery to charge at 2A safely. Any way to increase the AC limit on your kernel, maybe configurable by a file/variable/etc?

Galaxy Charging Current reports a 2A current on my S3 (Temasek kernel, adjusted for a maximum of 2000 mA on AC, 1200 mA on USB3 and 650 mA on USB2). Some power banks appear exactly like an AC charger as far as the USB connection is concerned.

Why weird? Is all in the P6800 kernel source code.... I've not mentioned SGS3 ....
Those apps may just detect the source input, not the actual charge rate limited by kernel. Big difference afraid.
If the P6800 stock kernel detects it being charged as USB, all you will actually get is max 450mA. Same goes for AC, may show the source input greater, but charging rate is limited to max 1500mA. You can see my kernel commits on gitHub and study for yourself.
Remember, those charging current apps while useful, do have a large degree of variance as well.

Weird because the charger that comes with the P6800 is rated 2A, and the P6800 battery is big enough to charge at 2A and stay under 0.7C. There is no reason at all to limit the charge to only 1.5A, unless the circuitry won't handle that (which would be a bad screwup by Samsung). I just asked if it is possible to change this "hard" limit on your kernel. I didn't mention the I9300 on this point, only as an example of a device where this is adjustable on custom kernels (it's also adjustable on your I9500, by the way, check Perseus kernel).

The OP could search for one of those, if his device charges normally from wall chargers it will charge from a power bank like this.
And BTW, Apple chargers are crap, they won't output full current unless they detect an Apple device. So, no Android/WP/etc will charge correctly from an Apple charger.

Comparing kernels from different boards and CPU etc is like comparing apples and oranges.
If I could make the charge current configurable in my kernel, don't you think I would have already? Not everything is "cut and paste" and I expended allot of time in trying to port the mod for our current hardware.
Yeah, I've used just about all the kernels (at time of owing device) including perseus, siyah etc, do have good experienceI with configurable kernel charge. After using/having SGS2 x2, SGS3 x1, SGS4 x1 and SGT P6810 x1, it's not the first time I've heard of it.....
I won't be increasing max charge rate on the SkyHigh kernel above 1500mA. This generally increases battery heat and shortens lifespan.
On stock kernel + unmodified systemUI.apk for battery charge icons, if the kernel detects ANY charge source as USB, the max rate will be 450 mA. You will not see any battery charging animation (just the red x), which is a "sure fire way" to check.
In short, on our SGT-7.7, under stock conditions, if you connect ANY charging source and you DON'T have the battery charge animation, it will be USB charge at 450mA max.

I didn't say it would be an easy/simple port, I just asked if it was possible. I didn't look at your github (and I have almost no experience with the P6800 kernel)... You know your sources better than anyone else, so I assumed you would understand better than I do what (and where) would need to be changed. I'm not diminishing your work or your effort in any way, shape or form; I respect the developers who stuck with this amazing device for so long, and who continue to make it usable way past what Samsung intended.

That gives us a "safe" maximum charging rate of between 2550 mA and 5100 mA. 0.7C is generally agreed as a good rate for this first stage charge for Li-Po batteries, which means 3570 mA; the regulators on the tablet will reduce the rate when needed. Generally, charging Li-ion/Li-po batteries at such a low rate (~0.3C) is detrimental to the battery max charge, and a major screwup by Samsung (and explains why my P6800's battery doesn't last as long now as it did on its first month); that is why I asked. But that was just a question. If you won't do it, I respect your position.
About charging from the power bank, I don't get your point. As I said, when I plug my P6800 on my power bank, I don't get the red X; I see the regular charging animation, and the device charges as fast as it does on the stock wall charger (which is just an adapter that presents an USB connection where you plug the tablet's cable). I understand that when the tablet recognizes it's on a standard USB port, it will use the lower charge rate. But "power-only" USB ports, such as the one on the Samsung wall charger and the one on some power banks, will be recognized as power-only connections (or as the same as the Samsung wall charger), and will charge the device as fast as the kernel allows.
My power bank (this model to be precise) is detected as an AC charger on both my I9300 and my P6800, and would be a good option for the OP.

yeah, one of my power banks would trick my tab on one of its ports. some resistor thing.
Its due to having resistors put across the data lines.
This is done to trigger the tablet into AC charging mode.
the wall charger has this done to it.
some batterys have a samsung charger cable or a micro usb adapter.
This adapter has resisters inside it.
i have one of these and charges on ac charging.
if i get another cable such as data or car charger etc..
it wont trigger charge even on 2 amps.
good news is a adapter can be made to go from usb to usb...look it up it has 2 resisters in it and also shorts the data lines to each other.

If I use the ipad one and use it on the 7.7 it thinks an usb device is connected, shows the charging icon and also the red x, but doesn't charge. I think it just has to do with the voltage it receives on certain pins, but what is the meaning of the cross?

As it will accept a max of 450mA on detected "USB charge", it still should charge, but very slowly.
If you leave the screen off for a while, you should see the battery % indicator increase. If you use the tab while on detected USB charge, the device may consume more current than 450mA, hence the battery % indicator may not increase but instead decrease.

Probably is not better, its faster. I would imagine it will shorten battery life because of faster battery degradation due to exposure to higher temperature more often than "normal" charging.

Still charges relatively fast using the bundled charger without Fast Charge checked. I leave it unchecked as I'm never in a hurry when it's time to charge my phone.

You don't have to use a different charger. Just use the bundled charger but uncheck Fast Charging, then it will charge normally.
but it still charges fast with the fast charging box unchecked... in ~1h its full.
or is it just me?

Yes, as I have mentioned earlier, it still charges relatively fast without Fast Charging.... 0% to 100% for me it's under 2hrs, never really timed it.
Charger provides 2 A at "normal" charging, battery capacity is about 3 Ah.
So in theory, 1,5 hours are suffient to charge the device in "normal" mode.
In practice, it should be about 2 hours for a full charge.
Fast charging poses a slightly higher burden on the battery, that's why Samsung gives us the choice to select whether we like that or not.
(Would be just nice if Samsung gave as the choice of selecting if we wish to have Knox or Region Lock, too.)
But as we've got a changeable battery, I don't care too much.
Method:
First I used my phone until the battery was below 15% in order to get a better picture of what the charging would look like over almost a full battery cycle. I did not start at the same battery percentage for each test because I did not find any benefit to doing so. I original did this for uniformity, but it did not make a difference after trying it using the more accurate equipment.
I then cleared my history in the Battery Monitor Pro Widget (BMW Pro) recording app which was used to log the battery [mV], battery temperature [F], time, and battery percentage changes. Once this was done I plugged in my USB Power Monitor, turned airplane mode on, removed the case, and let the phone charge. I started logging the data via my power monitor once the phone showed it was charging. From this point onward I let the phone charge without interrupting it until it reached 100%, then I let it charge for another 10-60 minutes to see if it was still drawing power from each charger. Once all of this was done, I exported my data collected from BMW Pro, emailed it to myself, and pasted it along with the USB Power Monitor data into an Excel spreadsheet. All of the data was then delimited to separate the clusters of data due to the way they were recorded, and subsequently graphed. The USB Power Monitor recorded data points every 0.36 seconds, while the BMW Pro took recordings every 5 seconds because I was having issues with the “real-time” recording option in the app working correctly.
All of the data was then graphed into the nice figures you will see below; each color reflects the same variable across all of the graphs to make reading them easier. I included a legend at the top of each set of graphs which should also help make it easier to read the data.
The most interesting part of this test is how cool the S7 Edge stays while charging, and the very marginal difference in overall charging time between QC 2.0/1.0. A 15-minute gap is marginal at best given the ‘big improvements’ Qualcomm claimed when launching the newer standards.
When conducting the wireless charging tests I think there is some error in the Samsung Fast Wireless charging data, so I plan on redoing it at some point. I already redid the Choetech one because it has a similar strangely long, but now it seems more in line with what I initially found before using the newer testing equipment.
I wanted to also quickly point out that both my HTC 10 and S7 Edge keep pulling current even after the phones show they are 100% charged. I’m not talking about a tiny amount; they both pulled ~1-5W+ after hitting 100% battery which is A LOT considering they are reporting to be fully charged. I verified this using 3 multimeters just to be sure. It appears as if Qualcomm, or the OEM’s are falsely reporting when the phone is actually charged, or there’s some other shady things going on here.
Another thing I wanted to mention is how the S7 Edge is so consistent in the way it charges the battery. It could be due to the lower rates Samsung uses (9V/1.67A max which is 15.03W) vs the HTC 10’s up to 18W that I’ve seen it pull. Just take a look at how the S7 Edge charges using QC 2.0 compared to the HTC 10 with lower temperatures, similar times, and a much more consistent overall charging curve.
If you look at the Tronsmart & Choetech QC2.0 tests, then you might notice the large difference between the two. The Tronsmart charger has a harder time holding onto the proper voltages, therefore it bounces around more from ~8.92V-9.03V (a 0.11V change) while the Choetech one ranges from 9.077V-9.092 which is a significantly smaller 0.015V range. The power control chip is responsible for controlling these voltages, and clearly the Choetech one has a better chip in it. This is especially important for external battery packs where efficiency really matters due to the limited amount of power they can store.

These tests were conducted using a series of different chargers. The same brand was used for both Quick Charge 2.0/3.0 tests to minimize experimental error; This trend remained the same was also done for the wireless charging tests

maybe you could also record the heat at the hottest spot of the phone during charging? I think qc3 has the same charge rate but its able to change voltage to reduce creating waste heat compared to qc2.0.
my main concern with the s7 is the battery life, i know it won't last me a full 18hr day so i really need a portable fast qc2 charger that is pocketable, so maybe 5000mah, but have not seen such a small qc charger tho

I don't have a thermal camera, or way to do that otherwise I gladly would. I can recommend a small 6000mah external battery pack if you want; Ill do a quick write up too (if you need one). The Samsung charger stayed at 9V the whole time per my multimeter's reading it just dropped go .5A near the end.

Thank you, I will add in a standard wireless charger test (since my free Samsung one is enroute), and I can also get their fast charger too. I believe Samsung's fast wireless charger is only 7W so it would be slower than the Choetech one but it never hurts to see how fast it is.

with the heat measurement, I'll be happy with your commercial grade temperature sensor that the great designer created for you, your fingers or better yet, the inside of your wrist.
preferably touching the same area on the phone every time and grading something like 1-5 hot/comfort levels maybe? just suggesting, no pressure

I'll look into some methods to measure the heat easily while they're charging. I'm conducting the standard wireless charger test using my free Samsung wireless charger right now QC 2.0 chargers the fastest when you start at a very low battery percentage, so ideally you can achieve the results posted, but ambient temperature, starting % etc contribute to whether or not that's attainable. It's still a good estimate for 30 minutes of charging +/- 5% for other factors. The phone also chargers slower when the screen is in. The rate would go from 9V/1.67A to 9V/1.10A with the screen on. It was very consistent when I turned the screen on and off during the test.

i actually won't care about heat issues while charging this time round, it'll be like my moto defy, i just run it under cold water after a fast hot charge, wont be using the s7 for many years so not worried about moisture build up.
i have ordered a magnet micro usb cable that says its rated for 2.4A charging so hopefully it'll allow easy qc2.0 charging, no need to plug in, it magnetically snaps on and off.
i think the best charge setup would be a 30mins quick charge (magnet) on the office desk than a 60mins wireless qi charge, carried in your pocket type situation.

Did you by chance order the Znaps? I backed them ages ago for both the Type-C and micro USB connectors. If I'm lucky I might eventually maybe sometime before I die receive them. I don't expect much from a kickstarter campaign that's been delayed this much. I'm finishing up the standard Qi/PMA charging test. It shouldn't matter the standard it's using but if it's important the Samsung wireless charger is actually PMA.

no, its from aliexpress, $10 or so, ive seen cheaper so I would say the poor Kickstarters had their designs stolen and made cheaper... im not sure, i just buy what's available and easy. just search magnet usb cable, you'll find heaps, the more exy ones claim 2.4A current rating.

Yes it doesn't matter becuase the phone is only rated for 15.03W so it can't use more than that no matter the charging method. See screenshot below:

@Pilz yeah sure, it should arrive in a couple of weeks. i hate plugging in as well, even with the usb type c, its reversible but finding the port isn't always easy, they should have made the port surface like a cone or funnel so your guided into the port more easily.
the use of the magnet is awesome, Sony's external side charging pins have been around for ages, its really the charging current and quality of the copper that im worried about.

I never knew that plugging in a micro USB cable was so difficult. It could be one of those things that once you try a better alternative (type c maybe?) makes you ask how you lived without it, but I don't see what the fuss is about just yet.
I've used wireless chargers for years (way back in the NExus 5 days even) including in the car. Any word on fast wireless charging and heat? I'm worried about it pumping a ton of heat on to the back of the phone especially for extended periods such as overnight.

Micro USB is just more of a hassle becusse usually you need to angle it while inserting it into the phone. Type-C is nice becuase there no worrying about how I need to orient a cable when I'm half awake plugging my phone in. It's hard to understand why its nice until you use it everyday.
I haven't been able to measure the heat yet, but the phone is cooler using the 10W wireless fast charger than it is using QC 2.0. The phone isn't hot to the touch but it is warm using the fast wireless charger. I'll try to download a battery monitoring app that measures battery temp while it's charging. This method won't be as accurate as physically measuring it, but it should still give a good indication of the temperature.
Edit: I tested the temperature using GSAM battery montior via the fast wireless charger fro ~6% charge (28-34%) and the temperature rose 6 [F], the I let the phone cool and tested QC 2.0. The phone was charger for 6% to keep things cosnistent with a temperature change of 5[F]. I would need to find a way to more accurately measure these values because that quick test doesn't really mean anything at this point.

It's just a QC 2.0 charger from what I can tell. I have a battery pack that will charge using QC 2.0 so I can test it using my multimeter
