Q: why we have 2 options fast charging or not??? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the question above if fast charging is better why Samsung let us make a choice? What is the difference?
Sent from my SM-N910C using Tapatalk

Probably is not better, its faster. I would imagine it will shorten battery life because of faster battery degradation due to exposure to higher temperature more often than "normal" charging.

so if i unchecked the option, but use the provided charger, it will still charge fast?

Still charges relatively fast using the bundled charger without Fast Charge checked. I leave it unchecked as I'm never in a hurry when it's time to charge my phone.

and if i dont want to charge it fast, i have to use other charger?

You don't have to use a different charger. Just use the bundled charger but uncheck Fast Charging, then it will charge normally.

but it still charges fast with the fast charging box unchecked... in ~1h its full.
or is it just me?

Yes, as I have mentioned earlier, it still charges relatively fast without Fast Charging.... 0% to 100% for me it's under 2hrs, never really timed it.

Charger provides 2 A at "normal" charging, battery capacity is about 3 Ah.
So in theory, 1,5 hours are suffient to charge the device in "normal" mode.
In practice, it should be about 2 hours for a full charge.
Fast charging poses a slightly higher burden on the battery, that's why Samsung gives us the choice to select whether we like that or not.
(Would be just nice if Samsung gave as the choice of selecting if we wish to have Knox or Region Lock, too.)
But as we've got a changeable battery, I don't care too much.

Should we turn "fast charging" off?

I think samsung didn't make this clear at all. And at the moment, I really don't have sure what is the best thing to do. Let this always turned on may let the battery have a decrease of capacity on a period of time?
Sent from my SM-N910C using XDA Free mobile app
No. Remember, the battery has a "safe" range of voltage. Of course I am assuming that even within the safe range it won't degrade any faster.
Also remember, you can just replace the battery!
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Free mobile app
I also think this way. But when we let the phone charging overnight, during our sleep time. The fast charging is not necessary. In this scenario, did you still leave this mode on?
Sent from my SM-N910C using XDA Free mobile app
I leave Fast Charging OFF because I only charge my phone while I'm asleep.
I think fast charging is harder on the battery than standard charging but as always, and unlike other phones, we can easily replace the battery in seconds.

Same here, I leave it Off most of the time as I charge while I sleep, and only use it when I need a quick boost if the day is going to be much longer than expected, e.g. if I'm going out after work and not sure if I'll go back to my own place after that.
Fast charge is the only thing stopping me from complaining about the 5hr SOT

It must be the placebo effect, I am not seeing any diff.
It's a great feature, should just use it and worry about battery life when the time comes. Like others already said, the battery can easily be replaced.
OBVIOUSLY the phone is designed for fast charging at night while we sleep or would you rather believe Qualcomm and Samsung didn't think of that and we now all have a ticking time battery bomb ready to go off at any moment at night....
Oh the horror....
So does this feature make battery life worse?
I dont charge mine over night, but if i did, I would turn off fast charging, or use one of my lower powered chargers. The fast charging is excellent duringbthe day, but using it while you sleep serves no purpose
Sent from my SM-N910C using Tapatalk
I tried theboth . I think both of them take same time to be the battery fully charged
Sent from my SM-N910C using Tapatalk
They take the same time to completely charge your device. Quick charge will charge your phone at full speed for about 15mins and then gradually decrease the charging speed so as to conserve battery life. It should not be a problem to quick charge your phone overnight because of this feature.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Also it would not be a problem because it doesnt keep feeding into your battery when your battery is full. There ARE safetymeasures, its ultimately irrelevant. I leave it on fastcharging all the time, because theres no reason to turn it off.
Leave it on. It's one of the best feature. Fast charging. Luv it.
Having used multiple batteries, and both fast charging on and off with several different chargers, I can say that it has no effect on SOT. This isn't a thought, I record battery use with and compare the data.
Sent from my SM-N910U
Surely there has to be SOME downside, if they allow you to disable it.
I mean, if there's no downside, why would anyone want their battery to take longer to charge?

Seems like a highly scientific test there

lMO battery life doesn't seem good cause fast charge doesnt really fully charge phone

I went back to the slow charger for overnight charging and battery life has been pretty darn good. When I use the fast charger it says it gets to 100 quickly but I feel it drops down way faster. Anyone else feel this way?
yeah, same happened with the note 4. I only use the fast charger when i need a quick charge. I use my old note galaxy tab s regular charger overnight.

Yeah. Fast chargers are great (the one included with MXPE is superb) but they're not meant for overnight-leave-your-phone-on-the-charger-for-6-or-7-hours-while-you-sleep type charging. Technically, the less you leave your phone on ANY charger after it reaches 100% the better it is for your battery.

He was asking for the source saying it is better to disconnect your phone once it gets 100% battery...
It's been proven it has no ill effect over time, and after charging to full it will stop charging until it discharges enough to need a trickle charge, at which point it will trickle back up to 100% and repeat the process.
If you have ever had a battery pack shut itself off after charging your phone to 100%, it's because it finished charging and didn't discharge quickly enough before the battery pack shut off.

I never use my rapid/turbo/quick charger (or whatever it's called). I only use the regular old overnight charger. I get great battery life. I know for a fact that heat is bad for all electronic components including batteries as can be read about in numerous articles on the subject. However, I also wonder about rapid charging to 100% why would the charge not last as long? Unless something that is reading the battery capacity is not accurate when the battery has been rapidly charged?
I don't have any scientific evidence. I just find I get better battery life using the old charger and noticeably worse battery using the rapid charger
I use the rapid charger and the battery life is the same with or without it.

I agree with this, my phone was on 15% and I was about to fall asleep so I left it plugged in for about 9 hours, and it was almost dead with 2hrs SOT and 5 hours after being unplugged. But if I unplug it when it's at 80-90% it lasts me almost all day and into the night.

How do I test Quick Charge 3.0?

I just got myself a new V20 yesterday. I tried charging it with my own Quick Charge 3.0 wall charger but I'm not too sure about the charge time.
So I'm going to try again. But before I begin, I need some advice.
How do I check if it's really charging with Quick Charge 3.0? Also, the phone now is currently about 66%, how much more do I have to drain before I commence?
Sent from my LG-H990 using Tapatalk
As much as you want. Thing to remember...QC is variable rate, the more charged you are the less fast it is. Also, official posted charge times from OEMs refer to a phone powered off typically.
Right. Powered off. Good point.
And I supposed using an app like "Ampere" is not going to work because of QC3.0's variable voltage and amps, am I correct?
Sent from my LG-H990 using Tapatalk
Okay. Just did a little test.
Started at 5pm with 25% battery left and using my own QC3 wall charger.
Ended at 5.50pm with 91%.
That's pretty fast! And the best part, the battery stays cool despite Quick Charge.
I'm going to try charging from 0% tonight.
Edit - Oh and my phone was turned off while charging.

Just an FYI, it's not good to drain your battery to zero. It'll shorten it's life. Keeping it between 40-80% is optimal from what I've read.
Sent from my SM-T810 using Tapatalk
Ampere app on Play Store, check it's charge current values specially when screen is off. I think it should be like between 2400 mA to 3200 mA. When screen is on , the charge current values decreases. Also with the app, you can compare the current values of QC 2.0 versus QC 3.0. Cable should't be faulty.

Thanks for your advice. I am aware of this. But I want to experiment just this one time. So it shouldn't hurt too much.
And the results are good! 30 minutes and it reaches 51%. 60 minutes with 89%. 70 minutes 95%. And 83 minutes to hit 100%.
Very pleased with the results.

Ampere might not be the best way to measure current values because of the way Quick Charge 3.0 charges with variable voltage.
The few times I measured all fall below 1000mAh.

Hey fellas, not to take over the subject matter but feel like you all know batteries well. What if a 1am charger is used overnight for charging. Going with the idea that a slower charge charges the battery better and maintains a better charge all day, or is that not the case. Also is any harm done with charging with a slower charger. Thanks
I never use quick charge at work or at home, slow charging will prolong the battery life. I always start to charge at about 8-15% where possible, and disconnect the charger around 90-95%, this is the proper way to prolong litium battery.
The only time I use QC is when i'm traveling.

It is better to use a slower to prolong the longevity of the battery. You won't get more 'charge' from using a slower charge. I try to use slower chargers when I can. I usually use my Samsung 2A chargers and use my adaptive fast charging when I need quickness. The LG QC 3.0 does pretty well though. Battery doesn't get that hot but I'm quite sure it still isn't good for the longevity. Nonetheless, we have swappable batteries so I can use my AFC and LG QC 3 more often lime I do my note 4. My HTC m8 and moto x pure usually were used with 1A chargers most of the time unless I needed a super fast charge. Also, LG makes quality batteries. Probably why Samsung is switching to them until they figure out what the hell they did. Also, notice apple doesn't use quick charging technology. iPhone's battery tend to hold charges better until a out 18 Mo th period before user starts noticing appreciable decline. The peeps that put iPad chargers on iPhone's will see less longevity from their battery.
So I thought that QC3.0 was supposed to get you closer to 80% in 35 minutes, vs the 50-55 from qc2.0. So I also read that the factory charger that LG sent is a QC2.0 and not 3. So I bought a 3.0 brick and also a new usb c that is certified compliant with QC3.0. Still only got to about 40% in 30 minutes. Not sure what's going on with that. I understand longevity and all of that. However I got this phone because once my battery is shot I can just swap it. So I don't mind getting that faster time and buying a newer battery a bit early.

This has been discussed, it's not charging any faster than it did in Nougat. All they did was add the text to tell you it was fast charging, which to them means charging above 1A. True fast charging would be 50% in less than 30 minutes, definitely this update is not going to do that, no matter what charger you use.
But after oreo update there is a little improvement in charging speed... I charged my A1 in switched off and phones charged in 1hr 35 min from 0 to 100%...and i used the stock charger...

Doing some very basic math.
3000mAh battery.
Charging rate of 2000mAh
That would equate, if the battery were truly at 0%, and charged truly to 100% full 3000mAh capacity, of 90 minutes, in an ideal world. Of course, there are some things that come into play, such as overhead.
With my USB measuring tool, I am able to see the voltage around 5.10-5.20v, and the amperage around 1.85-1.94A. This is with a Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0 charger, so I know for certain that it is not doing a higher voltage charge. I can also see that it is not doing a higher amperage charge.
Given this, I will have to see about doing a complete drain on the phone, and then charging, and seeing where 100% is indicated on the phone, in terms of capacity, as my tool can measure the amount sent over USB as well.

Charging speed

To power up, you consume Red Bull. But your phone just needs its adaptive fast charger. Rate this thread to express how quickly the Nokia 6 (2018) can charge. A higher rating indicates that it charges extremely fast.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
There's an 18W charger included. I believe the claims of 50% in 30 minutes are pretty accurate.

Hi. I have just bought this phone and it was all fine. I needed another charger for work so bought a 3Rd party one. It was fine the first few times, but now when I connect it the phone automatically shuts down and will not start again. According to the tech that checked it out, the battery was completely flat.
I suspect I can only use a OEM charger. Really inconvenient.
Nokia lie about fast charge between 0 % to 50 % in 30 minutes . I tested it many time 50 minutes to charge 50 %

Not true. I have never used the OEM charger. Fast charging is tough on the battery as others have said. I have several other chargers (one came with my audio chromecast, one came with an old HTC phone, one is a no-name charger). They are rated anywhere from 1 amp to 1.9 amps. All have worked perfectly. At work I leave my phone on my desk so leaving it plugged in until charged regardless of how long it takes is no big deal. I also make sure to take it off charge once it reaches 100%. It is not good to leave it on charge when full.
More than 2 amps at 5vdc are overkill for the battery and it's causing nothing but a superfast degradation but hey we have superfast charge on a cheapster ...

I'm using an old Aukey QC2.0 charger that I bought 3 years ago for my Zenfone2, it charges quick too. Using a meter I checked that the Nokia charger is using QC3.0 and for instance can charge at 6V/2A or about whatever voltage it wants, but my QC2.0 charger is 5/9/12V only and with a meter I checked it is charging at 9V and ~1.6A. My car charger is also a QC2.0 charger and works too, on the lock screen is it written "fast charging" and yes, it does.
The chargers I use daily for 3 years now (I have the old 2.0 version but now they are 3.0 version)

so practically using QC 2.0 and QC 3.0 got same charging speed? so what is the advantage of using QC 3.0? can anyone give some info?
QC2.0 is something like 5V/2A, 9V/2A and 12V/1.5A, while QC3.0 voltage range is wider, something like 5V to 20V, requested by the device, it can be 6V/3A for instance. Battery management is better I guess.
