Have a Verizon Dev Edition S5, and trying to flash a custom ROM... Do you need to flash a modem as well, or just a kernel? Sorry for the noob question, but I ended up with a Dev Edition phone by accident, so I'm kinda shooting in the dark with some of this stuff. Haven't had any luck successfully flashing a custom ROM yet. Have root and TWRP installed. Help?
most of the retail version roms do mot contain a kernel.. i would recommend reading rom of choice instructions thoroughly so you dont accidentally lock the BL
Thanks, elliwigy, but I'm good there. I've been careful only to flash the roms that specify that they are DE compatible. I always follow that up by flashing the kernel that is recommended by the dev. However, I have yet to have a completely successful flash. No connectivity is the most common issue, which is why I asked about the modem.

Yes you would have to flash the modem but "only" modem.

Is there a particular order in which I need to flash the rom, kernel and modem? I have tried flashing a rom and kernel in recovery and then a modem in ODIN, but no luck. Should I be doing it differently? I'm comfortable with flashing and ODIN, but I'm just not familiar enough with the differences between the software on the dev edition and retail version to troubleshoot effectively. Thanks!

Success is often measured by results, so I'd say "no," but everything in ODIN seems to be in order, as evidenced by the "success 1, failed 0" message I get after flashing and the big green "PASS" in the device status window. I'm truly at a loss, and I'm hoping that some developer will rally to my cause lol

Yes it does... baseband changes accordingly, but still no signal. Tried reinstalling SIM as well.

I currently have a brand new Canadian S4 with the MDJ firmware/baseband version.
Most of the roms are MDL based.
Do i have to change the base firmware/baseband to MDL before flashing and MDL rom ?
My goad is to install CleanRom wich is MDL based.
Thanks for the guidance.

You can just flash the ROM. Just make a Nandroid backup first. Some ROM's come with a custom kernel and you may need to flash a Canadian kernel directly after flashing the ROM.

I did get the original Kernel file for my cell provider. It is a TAR file with boot.img into it.
What is the easyest way to apply it after flashing the Rom in TWRP ?
Thanks

TARs are flashed with Odin or Mobile Odin.

If you are flashing the STOCK firmware for your specific carrier it will include the STOCK kernel.
If you are using a custom ROM like Mint Jelly or something, I'd say flash Adam kernel after flashing the ROM. You won't want to flash a STOCK kernel with a custom ROM.
Did you end up updating to MDL?
I also have the MDJ kernel and I installed CleanRom, I now cannot get wifi and TWRP will not boot in recovery mode. I thought it would be easier just to update to MDL to get wifi but mobile Odin did not work.
Thank you

No I did not,
Truthfully I am a pretty big Noob to all of this and was afraid of changing my kernel to MF3 from MDJ. I really didn't know how that would affect my phone / carrier situation here in Canada. The main problem was that I could not get the phone into recovery mode. Turns out I just needed to re-root the phone. So when I got the phone to actually go into recovery I jumped at the CM Rom. When I find a forum that helps me understand what updating my Kernel does to my phone I will try to update Kernel and go back to CleanRom. I kind of miss multiwindow.... maybe a little bit of Touchwiz...
Thanks for the reply!
EDIT : I also found this : http://www.scottsroms.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=421 which is a version of CleanROM made for the MDJ but it is dated further back which threw me for a loop too.

No worries and you're very welcome! Don't sweat, I'm still on stock ROM because I'm hesitant to make the ROM dive. Don't know how or if installing MF3 kernel via custom ROM would affect the phone in terms of rooting or custom recovery either. I'd probably be sticking with MDJ build if possible.
You and me both on multiwindow! Helps a ton when it comes to referencing something while emailing/texting! I'd miss the TW camera as well ... maybe. haha
Which version of TWRP are you on? Version 2.6 has an often-experienced issue where it just hangs at the "teamwin" splash screen. Downgrading to 2.5.0.2 resolves that.
Any updates?

Hey guys,
I am also a 1337m Rogers S4 (MDJ) owner, also a noob as well. I managed to flash my phone with CM and had a pretty good AOSP experience and learned a little bit on the way. I can legitimately say that I miss a couple thing about stock / Touch wiz, mainly the multiwindow support and camera. Cyanogenmod is also acting up and drains battery pretty bad when I am roaming in the states.
What did you guys end up doing? Did you update your base-band to mdk and install CleanRom? Right now that looks like it's my goal but I truthfully have no idea how to do it.
Did you guys go back to stock after changing? Do I just find a stock ROM on the forum and use ODIN to bring it back?
Is switching roms as easy as choosing something in Goo manager or do you need to go into a recovery in recovery mode?
Thank you!
So i wanna use the KT kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297379&highlight=baseband) but i dont have the required "XXUEMJ5" baseband/modem (however you call it)

You are not going to be a happy camper if you flash a different modem than
what you have now.
This is why NONE of these twrp/cwm flashable custom zipfile roms
found here in XDA contain any modem/radio images.
Modems/Radios are not interchangeable and if you do flash a modem you will
end up at best with a soft brick or at worst a totally unusable bricked phone.
Good luck!

Kernels are OK to upgrade as long as they are compatible with your
phone's model.
Always check and see to make sure that a custom kernel was designed
for your phone's specific model # before flashing.
Flashing the wrong kernel will not brick or soft brick your phone and it will not damage it but
it will cause unnecessary problems which can easily be avoided by flashing only compatible
custom/stock kernels.
Remember that clicking the "THANKS" button takes less time than typing "thank you".
If you know what you are doing you can certainly change your modem , check this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192025
for how to change your modem but read and follow the instructions carefully.
Just got my note 3 yesterday and I am no stranger to rooting, roms and everything in between. However I've never owned a Samsung phone before either so I need some help. I've been reading through the forums but things are still a bit fuzzy. I am assuming my phone is on nc4 according to what my settings say. 4.4.2. I rooted using towel root and such is up and running. Safe strap installed. I have also downloaded Odin and a stock 4.4.2 system image file for a restore if need be. Now do I need to flash a nc2 kernel before I flash any roms? How is that done? And my model is smn900v. Which is OK to flash miui for smn900 models right? V just meaning Verizon correct? Thanks for any and all help!

Okay, I'm assuming you're on NC4 since you used Towelroot. You can flash roms but since the bootloader is locked no CM, AOSP, AOKP or Miui as far as I know. No custom kernels yet either so don't try to run any apps that change the governor or CPU frequencies. It may happen in time but not yet...:fingers-crossed:
Beans has a guide here and roms in this link read the first two posts : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2787627
Modems, you're on the NC4 modem but we can change modems even though our bootloader is locked. You flash them in Odin. Put your phone in download mode and flash the modem in the ap slot. Modems can be found here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47400062&postcount=1
You may want to stay on the NC4 modem. I took the NC2 leak from 4.3 and that modem didn't work well for me at all. I'm on NC2 with the NC4 modem. Modems depend on your phone and your location. Some people haven't seen a difference in NC2 vs NC4, some people went all the way back to the MJE modem. It's something you have to try for yourself but if your signal is good then leave it.
You put on safestrap so you're good there. Don't even try clockwork mod or rom manager. Safestrap is cool in the fact that you have rom slots. You can put roms in different slots and switch back and forth with wiping and reflashing. Kinda like dual booting your computer with OS X and bootcamp or Windows and Linux. Right now the rom slots work but people have had battery issues using anything but the stock rom slot so for right now use the stock rom slot and it's like old school flashing, there can be only one for now (Highlander reference). As of right I wouldn't dirty flash anything make sure it's a clean wipe.
Next, the rom you chose to use is pure personal preference, they're all good just make sure you read the OP and browse the threads to get an idea. If you get stuck just post a question. The crowd for the Note 3 has been the most courteous and helpful since I've been on XDA.
Welcome to the funhouse!!!
Thank you again. Any more questions I'll post em here.

You should be fine, alot of the bootloops come from being on Nc2 and hitting reboot to recovery on the power menu. There's a fix for it but I just haven't done it yet. If safestrap is on and working properly just reboot your phone and wait for the safestrap screen and hit the recovery button. If you bootloop hitting reboot to recovery just pull the battery. Reboot to download mode and reboot to system from there.

I was told on beans thread I need to flash the nc2 kernel before any roms. Now I'm getting confused. Lol
Just tried biggins rom in slot 1 after making a backup and it hung after Safe strap boot screen. Had to pull battery and switch back to stock slot and reboot. Something isn't right....

I have had my Galaxy S4 GT-i9505 for nearly a year now, it currently runs Android 4.3 and I have been trying to update it to KitKat version but it seems impossible. I have tried to search for updates using Kies and using Software update in Settings -> About Device, but it always tell me "The latest updates have already been installed", even though there is a newer update available. Any ideas?
Also: When choosing WDCMA Network Mode in Network Settings, my phone seems to weirdly to go no signal. It would function normally when the screen is on but as soon as I press the lock button, it loses signal and I can't use the phone's network. GSM works just fine though, but the speed I get with GSM is close to zero. Any idea why this would occur?

Flashing a custom modem fixed the internet issue!
Your current firmware is here. Install through Odin to update, but keep in mind you will have to reinstall everything afterward. Note that installing a custom recovery will prevent OTA updates from functioning so if you have a custom recovery installed, use Odin to flash the stock recovery, then try updating.

Your warranty gets void okay?
So if you are really willing to flash a Custom Rom, TWRP/CWM Recovery and a Custom Kernel
Its not going to be so hard actually.
The MOST IMPORTANT part that you will need to do before flashing a custom rom is to ROOT AND FLASH A CUSTOM RECOVER SUCH AS TWRP
Auto-Root from Chainfire which i used also.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219803
that doesnt include a custom recovery. you need to download and flash it for yourself over odin. go search it since i forgot where to find it. lol but a little re-search you can find it easily.

Had the warranty for 10 months and never used it, 2 months left and I couldn't care less about voiding it. Thanks for the great reply, will surely follow your steps in case I decide to flash a custom ROM.
I seem to be unable to successfully flash ROMs on my phone...
I am not sure what's going on.
Yes, I am rooted. Yes, I am flashing ROMs made for my phone, and flashing the appropriate firmware to match the ROM. Yes, I perform a clean flash by wiping everything first.
I have tried wiping cache/dalvik after flashing, still no luck. I have tried not flashing gapps, still nothing...
No matter what I do, it never boots. I sit at the Verizon screen for hours on end.
Any ideas?

Never heard of this. You might have flashed the wrong thing. We don't flash gapps with our Roms. Start over by using Odin to flash a full stock tar of NGC and root again.

If you're on NK2 then most of the Roms I read you flashed won't work on that build. After you flash a ROM built for OC4, like FreedomROM for example, you need to Odin over the OC4 firmware (which includes modem and kernel) to the device otherwise Roms won't start. Same thing goes for everyone other ROM with the firmware except it has to be for the respective build.

Yeah, I've got that all figured out now. Never really had to do that with any other phones I've had, it was always just flash and go, never really messing with different firmware and whatnot. I have since tested 4 different ROMs and they have all flashed with success..
Thanks
