Just got my note 3 yesterday and I am no stranger to rooting, roms and everything in between. However I've never owned a Samsung phone before either so I need some help. I've been reading through the forums but things are still a bit fuzzy. I am assuming my phone is on nc4 according to what my settings say. 4.4.2. I rooted using towel root and such is up and running. Safe strap installed. I have also downloaded Odin and a stock 4.4.2 system image file for a restore if need be. Now do I need to flash a nc2 kernel before I flash any roms? How is that done? And my model is smn900v. Which is OK to flash miui for smn900 models right? V just meaning Verizon correct? Thanks for any and all help!

Okay, I'm assuming you're on NC4 since you used Towelroot. You can flash roms but since the bootloader is locked no CM, AOSP, AOKP or Miui as far as I know. No custom kernels yet either so don't try to run any apps that change the governor or CPU frequencies. It may happen in time but not yet...:fingers-crossed:
Beans has a guide here and roms in this link read the first two posts : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2787627
Modems, you're on the NC4 modem but we can change modems even though our bootloader is locked. You flash them in Odin. Put your phone in download mode and flash the modem in the ap slot. Modems can be found here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47400062&postcount=1
You may want to stay on the NC4 modem. I took the NC2 leak from 4.3 and that modem didn't work well for me at all. I'm on NC2 with the NC4 modem. Modems depend on your phone and your location. Some people haven't seen a difference in NC2 vs NC4, some people went all the way back to the MJE modem. It's something you have to try for yourself but if your signal is good then leave it.
You put on safestrap so you're good there. Don't even try clockwork mod or rom manager. Safestrap is cool in the fact that you have rom slots. You can put roms in different slots and switch back and forth with wiping and reflashing. Kinda like dual booting your computer with OS X and bootcamp or Windows and Linux. Right now the rom slots work but people have had battery issues using anything but the stock rom slot so for right now use the stock rom slot and it's like old school flashing, there can be only one for now (Highlander reference). As of right I wouldn't dirty flash anything make sure it's a clean wipe.
Next, the rom you chose to use is pure personal preference, they're all good just make sure you read the OP and browse the threads to get an idea. If you get stuck just post a question. The crowd for the Note 3 has been the most courteous and helpful since I've been on XDA.
Welcome to the funhouse!!!
Thank you again. Any more questions I'll post em here.

My main concern was bootlooping with flashing roms on nc4. I thought I read that somewhere a few different times.

You should be fine, alot of the bootloops come from being on Nc2 and hitting reboot to recovery on the power menu. There's a fix for it but I just haven't done it yet. If safestrap is on and working properly just reboot your phone and wait for the safestrap screen and hit the recovery button. If you bootloop hitting reboot to recovery just pull the battery. Reboot to download mode and reboot to system from there.

I was told on beans thread I need to flash the nc2 kernel before any roms. Now I'm getting confused. Lol
Just tried biggins rom in slot 1 after making a backup and it hung after Safe strap boot screen. Had to pull battery and switch back to stock slot and reboot. Something isn't right....

Did you use the nc2 firmware package in his OP? Also in reading his Op he says flash it in the stock rom slot. Even though Hashcode has working rom slots I still think they're not functioning like they should.

I figured I didn't need the nc2 firmware. That's what I was wondering about. If I need to flash that after flashing roms.

It happens, at least it was just a boot problem and not a brick. To be on the safe side always download from the thread... ?. Plus he said try the stock slot instead of slot 1.

Hi All,
Appreciate the guides and community here. Looking for a little help on my ATT S4 KitKat 4.4.2. It's rooted via Towelroot.
I want to run a custom rom that isn't slow. I have Odin, proper Samsung USB drivers.
1) Can CNW be used on my phone to boot to recovery? If not, what are the alternatives and how do I use them (is there a guide you can share)?
2) Do I have NC1 on my phone, what the heck is NC2, NC1-what does this mean, is it relevant?
Thanks all
-Christian
If you have updated your phone to the att 4.4.2 firmware then you should be on NC1 which means you cannot put cwm or any CM rom. The only recovery you can use is safestrap. After that you can only flash rooms the specifically say safestrap compatible and you must flash the att_nc1 module after flashing rom for WiFi to work. Read the safestrap thread under the development section before doing anything.

Yes, I would also read over All Things ATT/MK2 etc in General--:good:
Those numbers NC1 etc are your build version. Can be found under Settings/About Phone. It will dictate what you can and can't do on your phone--We have no NC2 yet. :good:

Thanks. I have nb1. No luck getting safe strap to take. Install completes but does not recognize status as installed or allow boot to recovery.
I have rooted, supersu, busybox, and no luck with safestrap. Any ideas.
Upon booting I notice an icon that looks like a unlocked lock beneath the samsung logo. Touching it does nothing...
Thanks for getting back to me

I don't use safestrap. So not sure. Did you wipe all including system. And flash to correct slot. Stock slot I believe. Use correct safestrap. Also need sellinux, spelling? The lock is suppose to be there if rooted. Read the last 20 pages of the hash code safestrap thread plus the op. And same on All Things ATT/MK2 in General. May give some ideas. ☺

Aha! Safestrap running and custom ROM installed. Is there an index comparing all Safestrap/Touchwiz based roms? Runnign SHO right now and it's pretty bland (resolution looks low too).

Iam all for custom ROMS. I made one for the Tab3. If all you want is the stock Nexus experience, you could just download the Google Now Launcher which is Google release the AOSP launcher. Then if you want the individual AOSP apps, you can do a search here or a google search, and you will find XDA threads that provide the apps with installation instructions.
I see it mentioned that I can use bootstrap 3.75 on KK NC2, but it's unclear if it works on NC4 ?
This for n900v model
I installed 3.71 but it never goes into recovery. When I tell it to reboot into recovery it locks up and I have to do a battery pull.
Figured I ask before I screw it up.
Can't post int he dev forum since I don't have enough postings yet.

You can use SafeStrap on both, NC2 and NC4. The Reboot into Recovery appears to have been resolved for some, just make sure you follow Hashcode's directions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517610

I was able to create ROM-slot-1.. is that what you refer to ?
Seems to work ok now.
I was just going off of what the OP said. I don't run multiple roms so I've never tried after upgrading to kitkat. I know you can create a rom slot on NC4 but I'm not sure if toms actually install or not. Good luck.

You have to install your ROM to the stock slot, as was repeatedly stated above.
I have looked through these threads over and over but i just cant find this. I received a replacement phone over a week ago and since then i have not been able to get a custom rom to installed. Can someone help?
Here are the steps I have tried:
TowelRoot to get root
Safestrap Installed
Removed Knox with SuperSu
Rebooted to Safestrap
backup Stock Rom
Full Wipe and tried installing Custom KK NC2/NC4 Rom
After Samsung BootScreen i just get a black screen nothing else ever.
Then i tried after i restored my backup from SafeStrap by flashing NC2 Modem before i did the custom ROM and still Nothing.
I think you need to install busy box and the NC2 kernel. Follow the steps 1-10 in this thread...and use Jasmine ROM.

i did have busybox installed before i installing safestrap. The thing i was getting messed up on was that I knew being on a Ret Locked Bootloader Device didnt think we could install Kernels. and since i didnt see Kernels in the Modem/Firmware/Tar collection Thread I thought when mentioned to install the NC2 Kernal they were referring to NC2 modem.(i know that modem wouldnt stop a boot since it is just for radio signals but i guess im tired from to much work). But i did a search for NC2 Kernal and found it and now I am up and running. I didnt do Jasmine Rom but Im up.
Feels good to be back on custom roms. Can not stand Stock on Samsung. I just need to bite the bullet and get a Dev so i can get AOSP/k.
Thanks for pushing me in the right directions.

Pardon the noobishness.
My 4.3 was rooted via towelroot and has Nova launcher,
as I have read for months about recoveries, ROM's, Kernels, bootloaders etc
and am more confused than when I first looked into rooting!
3 days ago I decided to flash my stock ROM so that I could update from 4.3 TO 4.4.2 VIA kies.
Immediately I was underwhelmed!
My phone turned itself off randomly.
The K on the kit katkat screen did not spin.
I lost my root, so I thought I would try and re flash the i9505XXUEMK9. Odin said in yellow "failed".
I waited about 15 minutes and nothing was happening and unplugged, big mistake,
the screen had a yellow picture, oh FUDGE!
So I took it to the Samsung Store in Sydney and I was lucky enough that the store was empty and a tech came up to me(!?)
I didn't have a reciept, but I told him the story and he said he could help.
He connected it to his laptop and asked me what carrier, and 10 minutes later,
phone was working and he had flash the Optus logo onto it
I was so happy!
When the phone booted up there was the towelroot and Titanium apps on the screen, but he didn't even care
I take it home, towelroot doesn't work, so I investigate, and the answer is Chainfire, all good.
The stress of it all!
Then I decide to hell with a custom ROM, I found Xposed with Gravitybox
and spent all arvo trying to make it work and Nudda!
Are my dreams of custom ROMS over??
As I am really wanting a hybrid S5 ROM!
I'm so lost!
I back up with titanium. I don't understand why I would need CWM, TWRP or Philz?
Then, the wiping process, dalviks?
Then I know how to flash with Odin.
I would really appreciate if someone knows a comprehensive tutorial or just to be pointed in the direction of my
knowledge blackholes, I feel that I'm close to being full circle!
I really want the S5, Note 3/4 features but I can't afford the upgrade.
Any advice or comments will be appreciated
Indeed, based on your story you are a big noob (no offence). You tried to flash a 4.3 rom while you were already on 4.4.2. That's impossible.
So what do you want? A custom rom?
- Flash a custom recovery
- Flash the rom with the custom recovery
It's so easy.
And Gravitybox? You should read more. That's not for a TW based rom. It clearly states that in big letters.
Thanks
Thanks for stating the obvious Lenny.
I want a hybrid S5 Rom.
Do I just have to download the ROM then flash it?
I don't understand why I couldn't just re flash 4.3?
Thanks
Yes download and flash.

I recommend you flash TWRP or Philz Recovery for avoid problems.
Okay so I've been browsing through the forums and been reading up on this phone (even contacted Samsung about info on unlocking the bootloader, no go on that. Had to try though)
Basically I want to know what's the proper procedure for installing custom roms on an NC4 device 4.4.2
Things I know:
Bootloader is unlockable at the moment (hoping for some good news in the future)
Towelroot for rooting
Safestrap for recovery
(Both just download and install the apk)
Things I don't know:
Kernel?
Somebody said I had to flash the NC2 kernel via Odin?
Knox?
What is this? What trips it?
I did see the list of guides and I did read and watch all the necessary ones, but the date on those are from 2 years ago and I just need confirmation on if I'm going about this right.
Any help is appreciated. I thank you in advance for taking the time to read this.
Please excuse my lack of knowledge, this is my first Samsung device.
Also, what would happen if somebody were to flash the DE stock files via Odin to a Retail N3?
If you upgraded to NC4 or NK1, you're stuck until Samsung unlocks the bootloader or Verizon stops lying to their customers. There is no root available after upgrade at this moment in time.

You are in luck nc4 is root able using towel root then safe strap and the unified firmware. You will need odin and a pc for flashing a few things the NK1 modem towel root and the unified firmware. Pick a rom from the development thread i suggest jasmine 1.x or eclipse.

My opinion: If you're doing a custom kernel, make sure it works with whatever ROM you're flashing. I suggest sticking with the stock kernel* until you get the hang of things OR do a little research and learn a bit before you attempt anything. There's a lot of forums with details and help here. I've installed kernels before and after installing ROMs with little or zero problems, but I'm more of a dabbler than a professional.
I would suggest backing up your current setup in case you need to reflash. That's a definite.

The kernel can't be changed...although it can be "tuned" if you have root.

Still hoping somebody helps me out and posts a short but precise guide to install a custom rom on 4.4.2 NC4
I don't want to end up bricking my device on the first try. I've been there already and it sucks lol

It really depends on the ROM, there is no set guide for all ROMs.
Did you install busybox? I like using busybox on rails. Just download the app and click install.
Download the safestrap apk (3.75 B04) and install that, open it and install recovery.
I'm currently running Clean ROM. I am on NC4. I downloaded the rom, and moved it to my SD card. I rebooted to safestrap, wiped data, cache and dalvik then installed the ROM to the stock slot. Then, following the instructions for Clean ROM, I rebooted to download mode from recovery and flashed the NC2 Kernel with odin.
The main thing is to read the installation instructions for the particular ROM you want to flash.
Don't forget to use Titanium backup to freeze SDM app (I think that's what its called) so your phone will stop trying to update.

If you're at all proficient with Odin it is really REALLY hard to brick these phones.

Thanks man, I was supposed to update this thread saying that I got through with the proper procedure for installing Jasmine Rom
Although I was running Eclipse before, and I wanted to try going back to stock but it just got stuck on the Verizon splash screen
I'm thinking it's because I had the NC2 kernel active when I should have gone back to the NC4 kernel
I looked for a NC4 kernel to flash but I only saw the modems and tar files, so not knowing if those were the same as kernels I decided to just try Jasmine. So far, I like it.
I have crazy battery drain though. I think it's because I'm running it in Slot 1
just picked up a verizon note 3 android 4.4.2 NC4
one of the very first posts above says you cant do anything on NC4 and then another post says NC4 is ok but just not android 4.4.4
NC4 is the latest update as of this writing isnt it?
what can actually be done with this vzw note 3 on android 4.4.2 NC4?
non dev edition of course
what about knox?
if rooting can be done with this phone on this OS is there any safe way not to trip knox?

I'd be happy to answer your questions
If you have an NC4 device that's running 4.4.2, you are able to gain root access and install safestrap recovery on your device. However, if the android version is 4.4.4, you cannot root or install safestrap.
NC4 is just our last build number, but there are two versions I think, the 4.4.2 and the 4.4.4. In the 4.4.4, they blacklisted every single compatible kernel that could work on the device. They forgot to do it in the 4.4.2 version, that's why we're able to gain root.
On our NC4 4.4.2 Verizon Note 3, we can root, install safestrap recovery and install a very limited amount of roms from the non developer edition selection on the XDA forums.
Rooting via towelroot, to my knowledge, does not trip knox. However, installing safestrap recovery does. But if you're worried about your warranty being voided, I wouldn't panic too much because with our bootloader being locked, it is very easy to flash the original Stock Verizon files through Odin to go straight back to factory settings so it looks like if you just pulled it out the box. The knox code would be reset and you would have a device that looked like if it has never been rooted or modified.

Thanks. I must have tripped mine somehow cause my device says "custom" when booting.
I'm guessing it might be Xposed but I'm not too sure.

It will say custom, but that isn't tripping knox. Custom can be removed with the triangle away app. Custom just gets flagged like you were saying by changing the recovery , but it doesn't trip the knox counter.

Then I must be confused about what knox really is.
What is "Knox" then?
