[Q] Google Maps updating despite settings - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I prefer an older version of the Google Maps app. In order to prevent an update, I've gone into the Play store and set for no automatic updates. And yet Maps keeps presenting me with the latest version when I open the app. It happens daily. I'm running android 4.4.2 on a Galaxy s5 G900a. It's rooted and running the Dynamic Kat ROM. Baseband is g900aucu1ance. This has got me scratching my head--my other apps don't seem to be self-updating. I've posted this in the Dynamic Kat thread, but I just can't see that flashing DK could have caused this, since no other apps are doing it.

I used to prefer the old maps too..but now use google maps and another one called My maps..also a google app..basically its the spin off of the maps feature of all your maps you have made online.. Its actually nice once you get the hang of it..but that was the main reason for me to stick with older versions..but now..b
No need..

I'm trying Nokia Here. This Google maps auto update thing is really making me angry.

[Q] Google Maps Live Wallpaper Gone

I noticed that the Google Maps Live wallpaper is no longer part of the options on Froyo.
Does anyone know how to get it on there or any news about it?
This happened on an update.zip upgrade from DI18 to EB13 on multiple phones.
Also looking for it
I'm also looking for it. Please update if you find it.
In the meantime, you can use this alternative:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700786
Also, in this thread people are also looking for this wallpaper.
Thanks for the links. I tried the one you suggested and it just force closes everyone I try to load it. Oh well, the quest continues.
Thanks again for the help.

Who is "they" and how do I activate this on my phone? I have never been able to find out how even though once in a while I come across a reference to "Google Maps Live Wallpaper" on the interwebz. Can't find it on the market. Can't find it as an option in Google Maps. Can't find in in my wallpaper picker.
Any further explanation would be appreciated.

'They' would be GOOGLE (thought that was obvious, but maybe not). Your phone and Android version must support 'live wallpapers'. I think it started at 2.2. If it does, when you go to WALLPAPERS from home screen there will be a LIVE WALLPAPERS choice.
Until a recent GOOGLE MAPS update, if you have GOOGLE MAPS installed, MAPS would appear on the WALLPAPER/LIVE WALLPAPERS list. It started appearing there many iterations of G Maps ago.
I got all excited today when another update for G Maps popped up, thinking maybe they had accidentally left it off the last one and were updating to fix... no such luck.
I am back to using Advanced Map, which does a FORCE CLOSE everytime you boot phone, but after that works fine.

Can you not roll back the update in the application manager?

I am trying to get older version now. Will check the 'roll back' angle, but found website with them.

6.0.1 didn't do it, trying 5.8.0 next
I just tried the "uninstall updates" method. It only went back 1 version, and did not restore the wallpaper function.
They mustve removed it a few versions back.

OK, now I am wondering WTF. 5.8.0 no go either and it was working on my phone just a few days ago.
I just got a 'certified like new' warranty replacement and am running GB where my old phone was still on FROYO. I am starting to suspect that may have something to do with this.
I did manage to restore my fascinate to state it was before warranty exchange, Blackhole 4.4, a Froyo rom. Goolge maps was 6.xxx and the wallpaper was woring. Am now back on GB rom and it is not on available list of love wallpapers...
i just don't get it.

Help me please. I need to revert back to maps 6.14.4 on the galaxy note 3.

I just bought the phone and the first thing I did was to download the Google Maps 6.14.4 apk from the Internet. But when I try to install it. I get the message cannot install. I tried unintelligible updates but there is no option as there is in my Nexus 7 2012. I'm guessing that it's because Android 4.3 being a fresh install on the galaxy note 3 as well as Maps version 7. I drive for living and am completely dependent on the maps app. I tried version 7 but it doesn't allow me to use alternative routes in the middle of the journey. There must a way of installing the old version. I don't mind rooting my brand new phone. But I must get the old version installed. Kindly reply with some suggestions.
cant you get the old map for nexus 7 and install it on note3?

If you drive for a living, I'd think you'd use something other than Maps for it. Sure, Google Navigator is okay in most respects but there are certainly better alternatives out there. Waze, CoPilot, TomTom, etc.
If I drive for living surely I would have tried them all.

None of those even compare to Google maps.

I don't have a Note 3, so not sure what exactly is the problem you facing installing Maps 6.14.4. I uninstalled the new Maps 7 from my 4.3 Note 2 and was able to install 6.14.4 fine? Were you able to uninstall Maps 7 first from your Note 3?

Maps is a "system" app so you'll need root to do anything about it.

I manage to uninstalling it on my Nexus 7 running Android 4.3. But Note 3 does not give me the option to do it. It's because it's a fresh install of 4.3 and Maps 7.2. You can only only uninstalling if you had a previous version installed. The only options I get are force stop and disable. I tried installing the older apk over the new one but it won't allow it. Thanks for the reply.

True, they're all better
I just realized that note 3 has this problem, even for non stock app, I have to uninstall the current one first then I can install the older version app

lol Waze rocks google maps unless you need street view. There's a reason Google had to buy out Waze...it's got stuff they don't! Waze is infinitely better (from my experience) at determining traffic issues in real time compared to Google Maps.
Google Maps, at least version 6.14.4, is hands-down THE best turn-by-turn direction program out there, even better than stand alone GPS units.
I drive a tractor-trailer (and am smart enough to not completely rely on it's car-based routing if I shouldn't!), and I use it every single day.
It's the single biggest reason I use an Android phone.

I'm sorry; I don't mean to be disrespectful, but you must be on drugs if you think ANY of those navigation apps you mentioned are better than Google Navigation!
I've seen it posted here with link to download the apps and OP claimed it worked with both versions of maps installed at the same time, I think I even downloaded it to my computer for future, but I can't find the post now, sorry. I'm not 100% sure it was Note3 forum but I usually don't read forums for other phones, so try searching, had to be last few weeks.I have not tested it but the guy clearly said here is the link, download it and you can have old map program working along new one. Possibly the link had map version showing as non system apps, or maybe the name was changed. If you can't find it let me know, I look for the app on my computer, but not before the weekend.

Google Play Services v8?

I'd there an updated version of Google play services? Seems to be draining battery?
I was interested too. I wanted to update to Android Pay, but it requires the next version of Play Services. I looked on APKMirror, but no play services with our suffix (440).
But, as it turns out, there is a new naming scheme, which means we're looking for 240 instead of 440. See http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/0...lipop-devices-and-more-apk-teardown-download/
Just loaded it up and it appears to work fine. It initially threw an error for Android wear, but after few seconds, it cleared and I was able to install Android Pay.
Thanks, I'll load it up and see if this helps the battery life cause it has been pretty brutal so far.
My phone came with 8.1.

Give it a few days and see if it settles down. Mine was killing battery for first few days, and has calmed down somewhat
I updated my Google Play Services and I recently started getting a message in Google Fit that Activity Detection is off. I click on it and it acts like it will take me somewhere and it never does. Same when I try and view the Google Maps Time line. When I go into location settings Location Services is missing.
Any ideas?
Can I reinstall Location Services somehow?
Can I downgrade back to whatever version of Google Play Services that came on the phone?
When I try and install the 240 version it says App Not Installed
I got it fixed renaming the com.google.android.gms-8.1.15_(2250156-240)-8115240-minAPI21.apk to GmsCore.apk and replacing the one in /system/priv-app/GmsCore/GmsCore.apk
And of course changing the permissions to match the one that was in there. I then rebooted and then it let me install the com.google.android.gms-8.1.15_(2250156-240)-8115240-minAPI21.apk
That restored my Google Location Services!
Make sure to install Google Play Service apk's that are meant for your device!

How I got "OK Google Everywhere" back on Kitkat

What I did was download a rooted stock ROM that I was already running (cnk2). I dirty flashed it onto my tmobile s5. Surprise! OK Google Everywhere! This confirms for me that Google has deliberately killed this function on their updates, I don't know of course which updates, but I would guess very possibly the search and Google App itself.
At this point I will continue to use the un-updated Google Apps, and report back on whether this adversely affects my use of the Play Store and so on.
Anyone not using Kitkat may be able to locate a ROM that contains Google Apps old enough not to have been damaged by Google. You of course flash that at your own risk. I was already using a stock ROM and flashed the same exact ROM, original version, over my running system.
If anyone would like, I can list whatever version of system app I am using that you think might be of interest in this situation.
Update
Yesterday my phone was getting really hot and the battery use showed that Google Apps was accounting for 16% of battery usage. I did some googling and found others were having this problem. I decided to see if updating Google play services would make a change. I updated:
Google app
Google play services
Google play store
Google text to speech
Google+
Afterward with testing, I still had Google Now Everywhere. My theory now is that an update of some kind that I have "leapfrogged" in this manner may have caused the loss of Google Now Everywhere. I can go into the Google app, select settings, and under voice/"ok google" detection/ I can still retrain the voice model and select "from any screen".

Google Assistant Force Closing

Here is the problem, and I have been looking on various sites and forums but thought I would take a peek on XDA and surprised that there isn't much chatter about it in here so wanted to start this thread.
For a few months now I cannot access "Google Now" .
I am running a Rooted Sprint Note 3 and still using Josh's KitKat Killer. Its a GREAT ROM and had been working fine until about Decemberish. Whenever I click on the Google Now Cards, or press the Google App Icon, I get a brief opening of the page with Weather Map and Events etc. but as soon as it loads it crashes out.
I can access a pure voice command search through my Widget to set an alarm, get the weather etc...
I cant help but Note (get it? NOTE!!! Ha!!) but it would seem to have happened at the same time Google Assistant broke onto the scene en masse back in December or so. Coincidence??? hmmmmmmmmmm
I have another phone that also had this problem, (Galaxy S4 Running Lollipop) and quite honestly couldn't get Google to work until I flashed a Nougat ROM and launched the new Google Assistant. I wonder if they are tired of supporting these older phones and are going to force people to up their game by making them upgrade to Nougat phones.
I have seen lots and lots and lots of 'help' sites talk about how if you 'Clear Cache/Uninstall/Re-install/Update' etc that it will work. That is A LIE! And don't talk to me about using the Google Now Launcher (which I am not that thrilled with) because that does not even seem to make a difference either. I have been, and currently using Nova Launcher. The whole process of Install/Uninstall/Install only works once then as soon as it gets a chance to load the data you are back to being screwed. It wont even stay open long enough to access the page to delete/alter/change settings. Very very frustrating.
I cant believe there inst rioting in the streets from millions of disgruntled Google users!!!!
So now I am just not using it. I'd like to but until then it is a hearty HELLO to S-Voice I guess.
