Google Play Services v8? - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'd there an updated version of Google play services? Seems to be draining battery?

I was interested too. I wanted to update to Android Pay, but it requires the next version of Play Services. I looked on APKMirror, but no play services with our suffix (440).
But, as it turns out, there is a new naming scheme, which means we're looking for 240 instead of 440. See http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/0...lipop-devices-and-more-apk-teardown-download/
Just loaded it up and it appears to work fine. It initially threw an error for Android wear, but after few seconds, it cleared and I was able to install Android Pay.

Thanks, I'll load it up and see if this helps the battery life cause it has been pretty brutal so far.

My phone came with 8.1.

Thanks I've got Android pay up and running with the -240 version.

Give it a few days and see if it settles down. Mine was killing battery for first few days, and has calmed down somewhat

I updated my Google Play Services and I recently started getting a message in Google Fit that Activity Detection is off. I click on it and it acts like it will take me somewhere and it never does. Same when I try and view the Google Maps Time line. When I go into location settings Location Services is missing.
Any ideas?
Can I reinstall Location Services somehow?
Can I downgrade back to whatever version of Google Play Services that came on the phone?

When I try and install the 240 version it says App Not Installed

I got it fixed renaming the com.google.android.gms-8.1.15_(2250156-240)-8115240-minAPI21.apk to GmsCore.apk and replacing the one in /system/priv-app/GmsCore/GmsCore.apk
And of course changing the permissions to match the one that was in there. I then rebooted and then it let me install the com.google.android.gms-8.1.15_(2250156-240)-8115240-minAPI21.apk
That restored my Google Location Services!
Make sure to install Google Play Service apk's that are meant for your device!

Does your Nexus 4 show up as a device in the play store?

My Nexus 4 is not showing up as an owned device under My Orders and Settings -> Settings in the Google Play store. Has anyone else experienced this? I was trying to push an app to my phone remotely and noticed my Nexus 4 wasn't listed.
I noticed that too earlier
Yes, it is showing up in my devices list.
Same here. No problems with all three of my android devices. They're all listed and remote install works fine.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
It took mine about 24 hours to sow up as a recognized device after first turning it on.
Mine shows up too on the Devices list.
Anyways, thanks for reminding me about this. Just set the Device name as "OG Limbo Level 3 Nexus 4".
Mine was showing up, but now it's disappeared and I can't use the web interface to send apps to it.
I can use the Store on the device just fine.
It's rooted, but I don't have a custom ROM or anything.
Any ideas, before I do a hard reset?
If you tried the 'Google Framework Services' trick to force the 4.2.2 update it can cause your device to no longer appear in devices on the Play store. I had the same issue with my N7 & all I did to resolve it was download an app (any app) by using the Play store app on my N7, a few hours later it reappeared.
Hope this helps.

Hah! It's been missing for days, and I have downloaded apps to try and get it back, to no avail.
I did the Framework Services trick again and actually got the update. Then installed an app from the device and lo and behold... it's re-appeared.
Cheers!
I tried the Framework Services trick and now my Nexus 4 isn't showing up when trying to install an app from the Play Store. Anyone have a quick fix? thanks!

I've downloaded many apps from the device itself during the past 24 hours with no problem.
Yet it's still not showing up as one of my devices on the website...
It should only show up on that list if you have actually set-up the 'wallet' app on the device.

Updated my Nexus 4 from 4.2.2. to 4.3 earlier today (OTA, nothing special)
Now it's no longer in my devices list on the Play Store website...
I was having the same issue yesterday. Couldn't download anything online, but had no issues downloading anything from my device. It seems to have been fixed now though. I thought it might have been the fact that I only had the phone for 3 days now and it just took a day or 2 to register with Google once it was activated.

Mine is doing this now (as I mentioned in another thread)
Completely stock, no issues accessing the play store on the device. No issues before the 4.3 OTA upgrade.
Have done factory reset but still no change.
Yep, shows up fine for me
12 hours after a factory reset, still no device listed.
Being able to search for things to install at work and have them installed at home was the best benefit of Android over iOS (for me)
After trying so many things, "removing and re adding google account", "clearing google services framework", etc...
IT FINALLY WORKED!!!
Here's what I did
1) Uninstalled updates to Play store and Play services
2) Opened the "Google Settings" app in the app drawer and clicked on Android Device Manager. Unchecked and rechecked "remotely locate this device" and checked "allow remote factory reset"
3) Refreshed the play store site on chrome on PC and voila!

Do we need GooglePlayservices.apk?

I've removed the GooglePlayservices.apk from my phone and not one of the Google apps has lost functionality. What is it used for?
A message comes up in YouTube when I first open it after wiping cache saying I need GooglePlayservices.apk or it won't work but I dismiss it and it works fine.
Also Google search bar says it needs it to work...... It doesn't.
Anyone know what it says ACTUALLY used for?

Hi There,
Google Play services is used to update Google apps and apps from Google Play. This app gives you access to Google Settings and helps apps speed up offline searches. So this is basically the gateway between you're apps and google play store. Most off the apps we install uses this app to connect to the play store to check for their updates. If not found the apps (especially google apps) may result in an error or FC.
It doesn't take up that much space or resources. So you may as well keep it.
Hope that helped
He can't keep it. He's deleted it. Ha.
I've disables this app because even if it does not take a lot of space, it is running in background and consuming RAM, CPU and internet data.
Everything works fine without it.

I can still see updates available for apps in Google Play without googleplayservices though...........So I don't think you're correct about apps using it to check for updates, they all still work the same.
I've never had one force close since removing it and I can update all my Google apps perfectly fine.
That's why I'm asking, it seems like a pointless app.
It just runs in the background using up RAM and battery.
The processor overhead of looking for it and generating errors and going to the play store may use more battery. Not 100 percent sure though. I'll check. Seems similar to deleting cache /killing a thread takes more to rebuild than leave alone.

Google Play store stopped working after Google Play Services v7.3.29 update

Per subject title, Google Play store stopped working after Google Play Services v7.3.29 update
Anyone else seeing this ?
I also had problems with Google Play Services 3.29. Not only did it not work, but it messed up all apps that used location services. Another weird thing was that when I would reboot that after a minute the blue light on the front would start pulsing for around five minutes then stop. To fix this all you have to do is install 7.0.99. I tried downloadin 7.0.99 from the web and it always got parse errors so I just transfed it for my cell. 7.0.99 is the latest version that works properly on the Fire TV. All versions after 7.0.99 did not work correctly for me. I am just gonna keep Google Services updated with the same update from my cell, cause that seems to work for me.
How do you stop v7.0.99 from automatically update to v7.3.29 ?
I uninstalled v7.3.29 and install v7.0.99, it works for a while then auto upgrade it back to v7.3.29. I have auto update disabled and that doesn't seem to be able to stop it
So I uninstalled Google Play Services v7.3.29 and DID NOT replace it any previous version AND
My Play store started working again. I rebooted a few times to make sure it is no fluke and the Play store still works
so the workaround for me is to remove Google Play Services entirely from FireTV

I do not use the Play Store, cause I am not rooted, but I never auto update any apps on any droid device. I actually use 1Mobile Market, Aptoide and Mobogenie to keep as updated n my Fire TV, but I update apps one at a time. They all say I need to update Google Play Services, but I choose not to udate and it doesn't update. You are gonna need to have Play Servics installd or apps like Gmail will no longer work. The lates Gmail requires that you have 7.0.99+ instlled or it will not work.

Works for me, but now "Market Helper" won't work without the Google Framework. I don't know if that matters.

For me, Market Helper seemed to change what version of the YouTube app was available. (Tablet vs Android TV). However, the Android TV version updated at a certain point and did not want to cooperate as nicely. Needed to downgrade that one.
Off topic but I have been trying to get the playstore installed on my rooted aftv. Have tried several methods including renaming the files with no spaces. Everything seems to install fine but when I try to login under existing I get error that my email or password is incorrect and new login just goes back to choosing existing or new account page
Delete.

So I deleted Google Play Services and that did work, however some of my apps wouldn't work without it installed. So I re-installed Google Play Services and figured out how to keep it from updating.
First thing I did was:
go into the AFTV Settings (the one it came with)
go to APPLICATIONS, then APP STORE, and turn click on AUTOMATIC UPDATES so it says OFF.
(I don't know if that's only for Amazon's Appstore, but it's part of what I did.)
Then, open Google Play and:
Tap the hamburger icon (three horizontal lines) on the top-left.
Tap Settings.
Tap Auto-update apps.
To disable automatic app updates, select Do not auto-update apps.
So far, Google Play Services has not updated!! I can post the Settings.apk and Google Play Services v7.3.29.apk if anyone needs it.

Yes. That would be helpful if youd post V7.3.29 Thanks
So I checked the AFTV today, and it looks like it did update.
However, my Google Play Store IS working!!
I just realized in my post that I said I would post v7.3.29, which is in fact the updated version. I can give you the same exact one that's on my system if you want to see if that works for you.

I already posted that 7.0.99 is the newest version that works with the fire TV. Any version with a higher version number does not work correctly. 7.3.29, causes problems with apps that use location services and causes the light on the front to start pulsing about a minute after each reboot. My guess is that some of the versions with version numbers higgher than 7.0.99 are made for devices that have much different specs than the Fire TV therefore they do not work as they should. I have tried every version from 7.0.99 on and 7.0.99 is the only version that functions as it should. I got my 7.0.99 version from my Galaxy Note and transfered it to my Fire TV and it works perfectly. Maybe people should check their phone or tablet and see which version of Google Play Services they are running, if its 7.0.99, transfer it to your Fire TV and it should be fine, but do not update past 7.0.99 or it will not function correctly. 7.0.99 and 7.3.29 are actually the same version of Google Play Services, but since Google Play Services is device specific they have different version numbers. 7.0.99 and 7.3.29 are the latest versions of Google play Service for the specific devices they are made for. There are several apps that do this, and a good example is Facebook, depending on the device you have the latest version of Facebook will have a different version number from device to device, cause hardware is different and apps are made differently depending on hardware. To see what I mean just go to the actual Play Store on your browser and look at Google Play Services and it will say latest version followed by saying varies by device, and it says the same for most apps in the play store.

Thanks for the update. I am not sure why the APKMirror apk did not work for you. Make sure you download the version ending in "036" (the 3 numbers at the end of the file name after the dash). Quoting:
To figure out the right version of Google Play services for your Android device look at the last 3 numbers in the parentheses. You'll see something like -XYZ where:
X defines Android version:
0 for Android <5.0
4 and 7 for Android >=5.0
8 for Android TV
Y defines CPU architecture:
1 for armeabi
3 for armeabi-v7a

7 for x86
Z defines DPI:
0 for universal
2 for 160

How I got "OK Google Everywhere" back on Kitkat

What I did was download a rooted stock ROM that I was already running (cnk2). I dirty flashed it onto my tmobile s5. Surprise! OK Google Everywhere! This confirms for me that Google has deliberately killed this function on their updates, I don't know of course which updates, but I would guess very possibly the search and Google App itself.
At this point I will continue to use the un-updated Google Apps, and report back on whether this adversely affects my use of the Play Store and so on.
Anyone not using Kitkat may be able to locate a ROM that contains Google Apps old enough not to have been damaged by Google. You of course flash that at your own risk. I was already using a stock ROM and flashed the same exact ROM, original version, over my running system.
If anyone would like, I can list whatever version of system app I am using that you think might be of interest in this situation.
Update
Yesterday my phone was getting really hot and the battery use showed that Google Apps was accounting for 16% of battery usage. I did some googling and found others were having this problem. I decided to see if updating Google play services would make a change. I updated:
Google app
Google play services
Google play store
Google text to speech
Google+
Afterward with testing, I still had Google Now Everywhere. My theory now is that an update of some kind that I have "leapfrogged" in this manner may have caused the loss of Google Now Everywhere. I can go into the Google app, select settings, and under voice/"ok google" detection/ I can still retrain the voice model and select "from any screen".

I had the same thing. I cleared the notification and so far it hasn't appeared again. Everything still works.
Others have reported it, and the popular theory is that it's a harmless bug in the latest version of Google Play Services.

anywho..got the notification AGAIN today, and this time I was actually able to initiate an update.
fortuitous given my tablet just updated the OS today.
I'm seeing this as well on my Fire HD 8 (2020), and it's very concerning.
I've also uninstalled Google Play Services and reinstalled the latest version of Google Play Services from APKStore (you cannot do an in-place upgrade, there's only a "deactivate" button which doesn't work).
The error goes away temporarily, but eventually returns a week or so later.
And we're not alone -- hundreds of complaints on this issue in the Reviews section of Google Play Services on the Google Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.gms&hl=en_US&gl=US
Is this just a temporary bug? Or is it an indication that the little "secret" of sideloading Google Play Store is over, at least if you want to use your Fire to play games requiring Google Play? Wonder if Google and Amazon are finally saying "no more?" I hope not.
...I think the fact most of us are running the play store in manual update only mode is the problem. it cant auto update the play services, and thus coughs up this error?

Playstore will let you know when you go to Playstore if it needs updating. I've package block and run Playwhore on manual update only for over 1.5 years with no problem.
All it's parent apps need to be running at boot up ie Google play Services. You may need to delete and recreate your Google account if it really goes off the rails. Reboot, reboot, reboot...

also..I've owned FOUR samsung tablets over the years and every single last one of them, without fail, whenever playstore has had an update, I've had to manually initiate the update, it patently REFUSES to do so on its own, and thats AFTER running every troubleshooting known to man AND consulting samsung support.

I rarely use Playstore. Updates there are set to wifi only, and wifi is always disabled.
Samsung tech support is useless.
Try googling the error codes.
I use ApkExport to make installable copies of my apps so on a reload no Playstore needed.
You can also use those copies to load other devices... if you want.
I was able to go into the play store and tap on 'update' on the play services.
-shrugs- it worked, thats all I cared about.
