Google Assistant Force Closing - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Here is the problem, and I have been looking on various sites and forums but thought I would take a peek on XDA and surprised that there isn't much chatter about it in here so wanted to start this thread.
For a few months now I cannot access "Google Now" .
I am running a Rooted Sprint Note 3 and still using Josh's KitKat Killer. Its a GREAT ROM and had been working fine until about Decemberish. Whenever I click on the Google Now Cards, or press the Google App Icon, I get a brief opening of the page with Weather Map and Events etc. but as soon as it loads it crashes out.
I can access a pure voice command search through my Widget to set an alarm, get the weather etc...
I cant help but Note (get it? NOTE!!! Ha!!) but it would seem to have happened at the same time Google Assistant broke onto the scene en masse back in December or so. Coincidence??? hmmmmmmmmmm
I have another phone that also had this problem, (Galaxy S4 Running Lollipop) and quite honestly couldn't get Google to work until I flashed a Nougat ROM and launched the new Google Assistant. I wonder if they are tired of supporting these older phones and are going to force people to up their game by making them upgrade to Nougat phones.
I have seen lots and lots and lots of 'help' sites talk about how if you 'Clear Cache/Uninstall/Re-install/Update' etc that it will work. That is A LIE! And don't talk to me about using the Google Now Launcher (which I am not that thrilled with) because that does not even seem to make a difference either. I have been, and currently using Nova Launcher. The whole process of Install/Uninstall/Install only works once then as soon as it gets a chance to load the data you are back to being screwed. It wont even stay open long enough to access the page to delete/alter/change settings. Very very frustrating.
I cant believe there inst rioting in the streets from millions of disgruntled Google users!!!!
So now I am just not using it. I'd like to but until then it is a hearty HELLO to S-Voice I guess.

Google Play does not show all installed apps

When selecting My Apps on Google Play web site I can only see half of my apps.
I have about 250 apps installed from Google.
You able to fix market links using Titanium backup?

i encountered this problem once...
i forgot how i fixed it, probably by rebooting or logging in different google account...
Try to delete data of Google play in setting - application
then restart phone
This is on the Google Play web site, not on the phone.
I just noticed this problem too.
If you install apps via apk (eg. applications you got on xda) that Google has no record of on the play store, they won't show up.
Hey guys,
I'm having the same issues with my stock Galaxy S III. A couple of hours ago, I became 4 fresh devices directly from the Authorized dealer here where I live. I wanted to update them and set them up properly for my co-workers. I've installed 4.1.1 on all 4, with kernel 3.0.31-256827. Everything went smooth on all devices and I was really fascinating what a wonderful device that is. Afterwards I've created 4 Gmail accounts for all of them (from the same IP address) to install the needed apps from GooglePlay. But one, somehow, someway didn't show any pre-installed apps in GooglePlay, such as GoogleMaps, Gmail, Google+, which should appear, because they're installed same procedure in each case (every device has got the same versione, same firmware,..).
..to focusing back on little-vince's post;
I hope that's not true.
I don't know the way these apps were installed or cooked into, but 3 of 4 phones went smoothly in my case.
All 4 were before the update on the same version, which I did not wrote down. The problem also is, that on another device I had the problem to update the apps via GooglePlay which were shown. There basically was an *update* sign, but when I clicked it there was the text that it's not available in my area.
I somehow think, that the problem is somewhere in the language/locales.
I've switched between the default language on the phone, rebooted it, and somehow I made it work on the second device to run updates,
but on the first device, not even a single installed app shows up, which is funny :silly:
I've also tried to clear cache, wipe everything, factory reset etc.., but it didn't worked out.
If you find a solution, I'd be glad to know.
Sir, you stated Galaxy S III, you do know this is the GNote >>Galaxy Note GT-N7000. Unless you are ref to the GNote 7000.
But I glad you used the Search button to bring this thread up...from June - Sept.
I had this problem once and it was because I changed the screen resolution (lcd density). Google play understands this modification as a "not compatible device", so some apps doesnt´t show at "My apps".
Before that I tried a lot of solutions, like cleaning the google play cache, etc., but nothing worked.

[Q] Fix to acessibility service TTS bug

I have been looking at improving the way notifications are displayed on my S4 and there are many apps out there e.g. iphone notifications which require a service adding to the accessibility settings. The issue is when you enable a service in there then you get partial TTS throughout the phone e.g. when browsing the internet you get page loaded speech etc.
Looking around the web this is apparently a bug with Samsung firmwares although I have not been able find a work around for stopping the TTS whilst there is an accessibility service enable.
The talkback service is disabled all its settings inside are disabled and driving mode is disabled. I would rather not completely disable voice by freezing the samsung TTS when rooted as I would like to use the voice commands.
I have the same issue - and I'm mighty PO'd about it.. I'd read about it affecting a lot of people with the S3, but I was lucky enough for it not to have happened with my S3.. Unfortunately my luck didn't hold after the move to the S4, and I get the verbal notifications in the stock (Samsung) browser. I tried all sorts of combinations of turning on/off Talkback before/after enabling/disabling the accessibility services that I want enabled in the hope that it would help. It didn't. I ended up disabling the 2x TTS services entirely which was something that I really didn't want to do. (And one of them wouldn't let me disable via Application Manager - I had to freeze it with Titanium, so had to be rooted to work around the issue.
For this to be a known issue with the S3 and to have made its way onto the S4 is ridiculous.
Have you noticed it happening anywhere else, or only in the browser? Browser is the only place that I noticed it, but I didn't really give it a chance to happen elsewhere before trying a bunch of things and then reluctantly disabling TTS.

I have do this same procedure. Do you have notice that with this, the air view don't work correctly on the email and that the upper and lower windows on the stock video player and gallery don't close anymore...

I have only noticed the TTS showing up in the browser so far but I haven't really explored far with it on as it does my head in.
Some devs have raised this with samsung here:

This is from iPhone notifications app page from PlayStore:
*** Samsung devices users with Talkback/Keyboard/AirView issues ***

Google should revoke their license till they dont fix **** like this. Developers just cant stop supporting Samsung devices when Samsung has most of the Android device marketshare.

"Unfortunately Google Search Has Stopped"

Hello,
I just received my new GS4 last night. Google Now crashes repeatedly. It will run OK if I don't add a sports team or a stock ticker but once I "customize" it, it will crash every time I start it.
The error message is "Unfortunately, Google Search Has Stopped".
I have cleared data and then I go through the opt-in process. It will run fine but as mentioned as soon as I change a setting, it will crash and then crash every time after that.
It's Google Search 2.4.10. I can't update it via the Play Store since it's a built-in app. Software version is L720VPUAMDC.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Erick

Google search is updated via the Google Play store. That's where I always get the notification to update. Sometimes it is a manual update. Check there for an update. Google Play > Menu Button > My Apps > See if it has an update available.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had checked that option and there was nothing. I checked the version number there 2.4.10 and that appears to be the most current build.
I just wiped my phone this morning (factory reset from recovery) and signed in. I did nothing else, didn't install any apps, nothing. Went to Google Now, added a sports team and the app crashed as I backed out of the screens. If I press the google button (to the left of the search bar) on the home screen, it hangs. Sometimes it comes up for a sec and then disappears but most of the time I get the "Unfortunately, Google Search has stopped".
This is really odd. I would be very surprised if I am the only user having this issue

Although my sports teams setup in Google Now carried over from my GS3, I decided to try adding another team. I was successful in adding one and backing out of the app without it crashing. I also hit the google button and still didn't have an issue. Not sure what's going on with yours, unfortunately. I'm running 100% stock MDC Android that came on the phone out of the box one week ago.

I have not tried this but I have read of others apparently solving this issue but uninstalling Google Search using Titanium Backup (requires root) then re-installing via Google Play.

Thanks. I saw that too. My only concern was if I should just bring it into the Sprint store first for them to have a look at it. I was worried that if I went the root route to correct it (and I do intend to root anyways), if that didn't correct the problem, then I would need to bring it into the store for them to look at.
Will the restore OS/Wipe Disk option (from stock recovery) bring it back to 100% "original" in case I needed to take it in?
Thanks for the reply. I may just go that route
Unfortunately, Google search has stopped... followup
Did you go with the Titanium backup route an deleted the Google Search app (actually, as I understand it, from the actual ROM... not only as a regular installed app) and re-installed from the Play Store? if so, what are the results?
Both my N4 and my N7 started showing "Unfortunately, Google search has stopped" messages after I edited one sports card in Google Now. Since its happening in both devices it is clearly either an app related issue, a Google related issue or something in between but, definitely NOT a hardware issue...
Your comments are welcome, thanks in advance.

I tested with a friend who got the GS4 last week from Sprint also. I walked him through all of the steps and his search application did not hang at all after adding a sports team or stock ticker. He was on firmware version MDL.
I took it to the Sprint store (even though I bought it from Costco) and they agreed 100% that something was wrong with it. They didn't want to work on it since I just got it from Costco. They said to just take it back since it's so new.
This morning, I received the MDL update. I applied it but unfortunately, it didn't fix the problem
I called Wireless Advocates this morning (the company that sells for Costco) and they suggested that I go back to the store to return it (even though their instructions that arrived with the phone specifically says Do Not Return To Costco In Case Of A Problem.
So, I'm kind of at a loss. If I root it and try to Titanium to delete it, I'm worried that I will lose any recourse with Costco. Once it's rooted, I am out on my own. I am thinking that I will try and return it tonight and if I am unsuccessful, then I will root it and delete the app.
Well, to be honest with you... as annoying and pissing it is to have the "Unfortunately Google Search Has Stopped" problem and Google Now not working properly on its last update, the problem seems not to be as bad to return your shiny new phone to Costco or where you bought it.
This is actually a software problem that Google should be fixing very soon and releasing an update to do so. Bear in mind, also that this very week Google I/O conference will take place in San Francisco and most probably they will release a new Android version 4.3 or 5.... which should include most probably a fix to this.
In the meantime, go to your Play Store, search fo "Google Search" and un-install all upgrade to this app, also disable auto-updates for this app and that should work. I have done it and it is OK (not the latest Google Now..but it works, at least doesn't crash).
During the lifetime of your phone you will encounter bugs in software, as long as they are repaired quickly and there are not impeding the usage of the phone and its critical functions, those are not reasons to return it. My 2 cents.
Good luck.

Thanks Piensa. I appreciate your detailed response.
I am right there with you. I can deal with it as long as I know that it's a software issue and not a hardware issue. The more and more I have been reading (and your reply also) indicates that it is a software issue. The weird part is why my friend's Sprint GS4 doesn't have this problem and the Sprint Store also said that it was a definite bug. That's the part I don't get. Why does his Google Search work and mine is crashing?
Good point about Google I/O (excited to see what they announce this week) and maybe an update will be released. Unfortunately, the version of Google Now included with the GS4 is the very latest (ver 2.4.10.626027) and I am unable to back out any updates (thanks for the suggestion).
I guess I will ride it out this week and see what comes out of Google I/O.
Question. Do you know if I root the phone without installing a custom recovery, can I back it out simply by factory resetting the phone and will Costco/Sprint know that it was rooted at one point?
Thanks again for your help.
Thanks for your comment.
Well, we are all here to help each other...that's the beauty of the Internet !
It seems to my that because of your phone's use pattern the bug got hit and appeared... your friend may not be enjoying his phone as you are...so, no bugs have appeared. Or, he may not have the latest version of Google Search (so he is using an outdated phone!
Pretty much the same happened to me... since few days ago, my Google Now worked perfectly, actually I had no sports card...suddenly, I wanted to check what the heck people was watching on public TV (a sports event) in a restaurant I went to...so I asked Google Now to search..and it came with the names of the playing teams...and decided to add them as my favorite sports in the sports card....everything went down from there when I tried deleting those "favorite teams" from the sports card...everything Google Now started crashing.....
On the other hand, my wife's smartphone, another Android, still works flawlessly... no crashing of G-Now, no weird messages...and she has the exact same Android version as I do.... so, well, we both got lucky finding that SOFTWARE bug.... let us hope that Google will fix it very soon. There are MANY people experiencing this annoyance so, I am confident Google will not let it pass too long...(I understand they may be a little busy with their 2013 I/O event...so, I can wait a few days....).
Again, just downgrade to a previous version of Google Search, by deleting the upgrades of it in the Play Store and don't let it self upgrade Google Searh, for now... if you do that, you will be fine.

I can't back out any updates as there have been none to Google Search. The GS4 ships with the most current. The only option for Google Search in the Play Store is "open".
I can uninstall updates to Gmail, etc but not Google Search (see attached pic).
Thanks for your assistance.

Woow. you are correct.
The version of Google Search that your GS4 came with, from factory, is in fact the latest one. My Nexus 4 came with a previous version installed thus I was able to do the downgrade.
So, if you are not rooted, and/or do not want to mess with your firmware, seems you have to wait for Google to fix this issue. Sorry to learn that friend.
Lets hope it gets fixed very soon.

Yup. I'm trying to decide what to do now. I went to Costco tonight to look into swapping it out for a new one and they don't carry Sprint products in store. So I would either need to work with Wireless Advocates to ship it back and pay $600 for an advance replacement or just wait it out, hoping that the phone itself is fine and wait for Google to correct it.
If I was still on MDC, I would have used motochopper to root it, uninstall Google Search and then test re-installing it to see if it corrects it. But the MDL upgrade today killed that option.
I think I will wait a couple days, see what comes out of I/O as well as the root exploits for MDL and make a decision. It just sucks because I don't want to spend time customizing the phone to my liking in case I swap it out or wipe it, etc.
Again, many thanks for your help.

Thanks. I wish that information like this was more readily available. I have been wiping my phone, making trips to Costco, Sprint, etc and still haven't customized my phone because of this. I thought that my phone was defective but had I seen this, I wouldn't have worried about it and just waited it out.
Thanks.
And it's fixed! (at least it is on my phone).
Google released an update to Google Search today and I can add/remove sports teams and stock tickers w/o a problem!
Many thanks again to the contributors to this thread.

It worked for me! Thanks!! (GS4 - Hyperdrive v10.1)

Note 3 voice action issue

I recently purchased a galaxy note 3 sm-900. I was desperate to return my android experience back to the one that I had become accustomed to on previous phones, so among other things I set about the task of removing google's new voice search and finding a way to install the old one. In short, I rooted the phone and deleted system apps using RootAppDelete. I uninstalled the google search app itself and then one that said something along the lines of com.google.android.voicesearch. After that, the google play store finally allowed me to download a fresh copy of the old voice search app, which installed just fine and works almost like it should on my phone. The only problem I have is that the app does not recognize voice commands, which is primarily what I use the app for. If I say "Navigate to X", the phone will open the browser with a google search for "Navigate to X". I really need to find a way to make these voice commands work. I have been digging through internet threads for the last few hours trying to find someone with a similar problem but with little success.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix this?

Has anyone received the Google Assistant update on their A2017U?

This past week, I've been reading that Google is pushing "Google Assistant" out, to replace the standard "Ok Google", to a bunch of Marshmallow and Nougat phones.
Has anyone received that yet, or know if the Axon 7 is going to get it soon?
Every phone running Android 6.0+ will receive the update but you already knew that. They are running the roll out as we speak but only for English users in US. English users in Australia, Canada and UK and Germany will soon follow. Rest during the course of the year apparently. So if you are in the US you will likely receive it soon or may already have received an update to the app. Hope this clarifies.
I just got the update a few minutes ago! I'm in northern California.

Yep, you guys prompted me to check mine, and I have it too!
I hate it. I use long press for Google Now to search like a hundred times a day. Now it is the Assistant and I see no way of typing my query. So now I have no way to do a search in one step. Anything I can do to get it back the way it was? Or a way to get a text field into Google Assistant?
yes!.. its working for me.. but..
dont know how it started working?
dont know where it the got the update from?
dont know where to check the update?... can someone pls help me find the answer?
use to use the long home press to check screen search.. disabled it today and thought because i disabled it, the assistant got kicked in.
Happy its working now coz the only reason wanted to get the pixel is for the assistant. this is great!
It seems like Google just doesn't want me to have assistant lol

I can force my phone to set up the Google Assistant, naturally, by removing my account and clearing data from the Google App, Play Services, and Play Store, and then holding the home button > then adding my account. But as soon as I back out of the assistant it goes back to On Tap.
How do you update, is this an upgrade to Google home? Presume this is not available to the Chinese version?

If you have the correct Google app, you already have Assistant. It just wasn't enabled yet. I don't know exactly how it works, but the app sees that you're on Marshmallow or higher in your build.prop and enables it. I currently have a Nexus 6p and before Google decided to enable it for all phones over 6.0, devs figured out that changing a couple of lines in the build.prop tricked the app to think the phone was a Pixel, thus enabling Assistant.

I hate it. I use long press for Google Now to search like a hundred times a day. Now it is the Assistant and I see no way of typing my query. So now I have no way to do a search in one step. Anything I can do to get it back the way it was? Or a way to get a text field into Google Assistant?

I found those instructions weeks ago but I'm not rooted and there's no option to add languages so I'm screwed. The update also made do not disturb mode turn on 24/7 unless I completely disable it. What a load of BS.

I feel your pain bro. I hate this fact. I'm still using the Pixel launcher which has the search widget for text. I find myself going to the home screen to do my Google searches. It's horrible.

I'm using Nova so I set it up so that pressing home (once home) or swiping up on the drawer icon takes me to search. Yeah it really sucks to have to go to the home screen. That damn assistant sucks. It forgets my voice training after awhile too and I have to do it again.
I have on my G version, I don't know for sure, but I got so fed up waiting, I tried changing my language to US, rebooted the phone and bam! Within 10 seconds I had it. Also I had updated to the latest google play services. I had done this a million times but nothing happened until the language change. Coincidence?
