Fragile Screen, Don't buy Moto X 2014 - X 2014 General

Hello XDA member and potential Moto X 2014 buyers,
I would suggest you to refrain from buying this device as it is the most fragile smartphone you can think of and they also do not provide proper support. I bought the smartphone a few weeks ago and by mistake it fell from just a one feet and the screen has shattered into piece. Now I totally regret Buying the phone, instead if you can get your hands on HTC One M8 or One PlusOne

Don't buy a Ferrari, the carbon fiber body panels crack very easily when you drive into a pole. And the dealership won't cover the damages if you run into said pole.
You should buy a pickup truck instead. It'll be a bandage for stupid.

cool 1st post bro. reported to be closed.

Very informative post lol.. YOU drop your phone and are mad they won't give you another 1..side note I think their customer service is top notch..I received my cyber Monday deal moto x yesterday and it has a small "spider web" crack on the back.. Called them and a replacement is already on the way..this is the 3rd time I've had to deal with their support.. Every time I've walked away happy

My screen cracked with a trivial fall. I had purchased Moto Care accident protection. Replaced phone w/ no questions asked.

awesome 1st post
no matter which phone u drop ,if it lands screen first then it will die.
sent from moto x

I've dropped my phone 3 or 4 times now on its face. Screen is perfectly fine but very minor blemish to the bottom by micro USB

Glass breaks!!! Put a case on the phone or don't drop it. Seems pretty simple to me.

Mine fell from my pocket at around 40cm on the bathroom floor when i was taken a dumb but it didn't crack

Thread closed, adds nothing

Should I sell my Streak because the screen is too fragile...

Hi,
I recently bought a Streak as my first android phone. I got it at a very reasonable price (~ 100€ below the current amazon price). So if I would sell it used now I wouldn't loose any money...
So far I really like the streak however I have to carry it around in my jeans pocket.
The numorous reports of broken LCDs and Dells terrible support however made me thinking if I should sell it now and get a more robust cheaper smartphone.
So is the broken screen thing really an issue ?
As one who has killed two Streak screens, I would say "No". I doubt that any other phone would have survived either of those incidents either. The first time, my streak got between me and the handle of a pallet jack that I was trying to push up a ramp. The second time, I was simply clumsy. I was going to slip the Streak into my shirt pocket while standing and missed. As a result, it suffered a 4' drop to a ceramic tile floor.
-Uwe-
Someone from Dell officially advised to not use the Streak in your pocket ( http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/mobile-devices/f/3824/t/19353929.aspx ) also several people stated that their Streak broke even they didn't drop or bump it.

buy a hardcase for it that you can hang on youre belt
That wouldn't make it pocketable any longer...
I already sold it... because I don't like a device so fragile in my pocket. Even within the few days that I owned it I encountered 2-3 situations where I almost broke it (running upstairs, leaning against a table, getting the lawnmower out of the shed)

lol let the mods lock this pls then
I say if your a careful person who cares for your gadgets then keep the Streak.
Otherwise if your likely to bash it around or drop it then get something less delicate.
I don't know how people break this phone. I find some of the stories of 1 and 2 foot drops to be obviously over exaggerated. I have literally put this device through hell. I have a seven year old daughter and ceramic tile. I work on concrete. I always have it in my pocket, and to put that into perspective I am 5'7" and weigh 126 lbs so they are some pretty small pockets. I've even left it outside on the patio on rainy nights on more than one occasion. I can't say enough how pleased I am with the build quality of this phone. If it wasn't for terrible support from dell with upgrades and such, I would guarantee sticking with dell products in the future.

I'm the same build as you and have had the streak since US launch.
The first one I had lasted about a month, dropped it a few times and nothing but a few scratches on the edges (had a full body invisible shield). Then one night I was crossing the street and a car came flying around the corner so I had to run and jump out the way, streak slipped out of my hand, slammed the road and slid almost a full lane across the street. Picked it up and only a few scratches but it wouldn't boot. After further testing I came to the conclusion that internal microsd had dislodged. Called dell up and they swapped it out for me (ofcourse I didn't tell them the whole story )
Now my second streak I've had it for a while. I go out and party quite a bit so its had its fair share of tipsy/drunken slips out of my hand. Again its held strong and only resulted in scratches on the edges. But the other week I took a picture, pressed the home button, power, then put it in my pocket. 2 min later pulled it out of my pocket and LCD under gorilla glass was cracked, with the crack spreading like a pigeon foot from the home button. I went through hell to get it replaced. The dell reps were horrible. Had a supervisor call me a liar, one agent claimed the LCD is "software" and not covered by the hardware warranty, and another claimed my warranty is void because I had it in my pocket (agent didn't have anything to say when I asked him why on the TV ads they claim it to be the "world's first pocket tablet")!
Well after calling multiple times a day for 4 days in a row, I kept requesting my issue be escalated and many reps denied, I finally talked to someone higher then the call center supervisor and was told because of my circumstances and horrible experience he'll be able to issue me another unit and I would be getting follow up calls and emails regarding rude and misinformed reps (had a couple hang up on me when I read them part of the warranty and one even yell at me).
Well replacement came, was a refurb, and not only was the notch that sticks out of the battery cover broken off (didnt care much, could use my old cover) but the left side of the top plastic piece was sticking way out and there was a really deep scratch in the gorilla glass from the charge port to the power button.
Called dell and nice lady was helpful and said she has no option but to send me another refurbished but the next day a brand new one was at my door :-D
After this entire fiasco I'm staying away from dell for a REALLY long time but I will keep this streak and most likely make a permanent mount for it to replace my trucks stock stereo/navigation unit when I get my next device (if it lasts till that happens).

Just buy one! I've dropped mine loads and not broken the screen. I carry mine in mt pocket, nothing in the warranty says you can't.

I'm also satisfy with the D.Streak's build quality. Every device will mostly break (the LCD, internal circuits....) if you let it fall on the ground and there's no exception to that.
A good advice for any new D.Streak New owner would be buy an Otterbox Commuter/Defender case to protect your device.

I saw the pic you sent Steve on twitter of the cracked LCD (I follow him). Lol @ the "pocket tablet" comment to the dell Rep. I also have decided not to stick with dell solely on the bases of software support. DJ_Steve has been a godsend, but that said I will have to conform and get a more popular android with more devs. Half the fun of android, for me atleast, is flashing new roms and trying new things. I own the ds5 and 7 and both are extremely boring, but sadly, very capable devices. Nice try dell. Or lack there of.

I always keep mine in a pocket, even sit on it from time to time, and I've had no problems with the screen. I do have it in an OtterBox Commuter case and also have a non-glare screen protector on it.
I am very happy with my streak's screen so far,it has a excellent touch, much better than milestone or other lg/samsung I have tried. And the screen is also pretty tough,I never applied any screen protector, yet not a single scar on it while the upper part and lower part are both screwed!
I do have a defender thought,I cut away the lower side of the defender,so that I can just flip over the device, and use the defender to keep my screen from sweater or unexpected damage.

Aw Geesh! My Screen Is Cracked!!!!

I picked up my Nexus 7 this evening to do some reading and noticed I couldn't get any touch responses. I couldn't get the ring to slide in either direction to unlock the screen. I kept trying for several minutes and finally got it to turn off. I thought a re-set might help. I did get it turned back on but it was doing the same thing. No touch response. I finally turned on my chair lamp and looked at the screen.
I have a crack clear across the screen about a third of the way down! Now, I do not treat my devices roughly in any way. I'm 62 years old so I don't throw stuff around, I use them as they should be used. I don't put my Nexus 7 in a backpack nor have I taken it out of my house in the two weeks I've had it.
I don't believe the glass should be cracking at two weeks of very gentle use.
I guess I have to ask ASUS for warranty service or do I take it back to Office Deport to see if they will do anything for me?
Would appreciate some advice.
I'd bring it back to office depot because that's the quickest way. They might let you exchange it
You just opened it and there was a crack across the screen, Office Depot shouldn't give you a problem with that. Now I'm believing you that you didn't drop it, so in that case it is a hardware defect and you should just ask to exchange it.

same thing with my screen, i pressed lightly just to put the back cover back on. I think it's really delicate.
Quick and Fantastic Update!
Well I was pretty bummed out that my Nexus 7 screen was cracked which made the entire device unusable! I contacted ASUS via their web site and asked about their return/warranty service. They sent me a pretty quick email telling me to fill out an RMA form and a bunch of other stuff which I really, really didn't want to do.
I really didn't want to go that route so today I took a chance and went back to the Office Depot that I bought the device from. I showed my busted Nexus 7 to the manager and he asked if I had bought a Protection Plan. Well, I figured I was dead in the water since I clearly didn't buy any protection plan 15 days ago. He also mentioned they had a 15 day return/exchange policy!
Then to my surprise, Carlie, the manager, said, "Well, I'll go ahead and exchange this one if you buy a Protection Plan this time." Believe me, that didn't sound so bad this time around especially since the Protection Plan covers cracked screens for up to 2 years!
Finally, I have a new (not refurbished) Nexus 7 from Office Depot! That's great customer care if you ask me. I'll be back to that store to buy a lot more stuff in the future.
Just a word to other owners...the glass on the Nexus 7 ain't gorilla glass of any kind if it can break during normal use! I've got mine in a very nice case and that's where it will stay.
wow.. that's absolutely great news.
I'm stuck with my cracked 16g which I can only use with a mouse.
I'm currently thinking of buying a 8G, as I'm abroad and can't return my 16g.
Awesome! It never hurts to try in cases like these, and it helps to be nice
Its for the best that you ended up with a protection plan. I missed the deal they had at squaretrade and endEd up paying 50 bucks for the two year coverage. Oh well at least I have peace of mind...

It's Corning® Fit Glass
Not like it makes any major difference, the TF201's are Corning Gorilla and a lot of people have cracked/smashed their screens.
Thin glass is Thin -_-
My screen is cracked too
Thanks for creating this thread as I need to share my experience with a Nexus 7 that I purchased from Staples 1 week ago.
I was very disturbed to find out that my new Nexus 7 wasn't responding to my password this morning. It was working fine last night before I put it in my nightstand drawer. I wiped away what I thought was a smudge but noticed that it was a 6 inch long crack on the left side. I contacted Asus support and they want me to send the device back to them (at my expense). They'll examine the device and see if the crack was due to user mistreatment. Side note: it wasn't. I do recall that I may have banged it against the counter when I caught it after almost dropping it.
After reading this thread I may go back to Staples and see if they'll replace the device. When I purchased it last week the manager tried to sell me a protection plan but if I recall they were $50 or $100. I've had an Ipod touch for over 2 years and never hand any issues like this. I'm very disappointed to say the least.
BTW I purchased a cover for the Nexus yesterday but it seems to be too late.

My exchange, 2nd from GameStop had the LCD cracked but the outer glass was intact on the day I opened it for my birthday. Took that one back, they gave me a store credit because they didn't have anymore, and the pre-orders closed. I found out they got a new shipment from others on here and called my store today. Manager says, I tried to call you yesterday, we got an extra and another pre-order that decided not to pick his up. Come on by and get yours.
I instantly installed a xtremeguard and my x series tpu case, although this one is not responding to touches, I didn't bother to test it before installing the protector, as I didn't want to get finger prints on it and have to clean it off.. This happened with my previous one as well, but it responded better every hour it dried, not the same on the new one. Also another observation, this is the first of my 3 units that didn't come re-sealed with double tape...

If I knew office depot would have a protection plan for 2 years including screen I probably would not have bought from Google. great news it all worked out. I cracked my notion ink tablet and it cost more than the tablet was worth to replace the screen.
Cracked screen update
A quick up update to my previous post. I just got off the phone with Staples and they won't let me return the tablet because it is damaged. I tried to explain that I didn't cause the damage but the employee wasn't budging on this. He said that the only way a screen can crack is by applying too much pressure. I explained that I in no way misused or abused it. I'm very disappointed in Staples not standing behind the products that they sell.

Sturdy Build Moto G 2014

Today in the afternoon I was waiting at the bus stop. My bus arrived and in a hurry I tried to put the phone in my back pocket. Didn't judge properly and imagine what happened next. My phone fell flat on the screen from 3 feet height with a loud thud. I was hoping for the worst. When I picked up the phone I was shocked to see that the phone didn't have even a single scratch not any crack. I was absolutely stunned and amazed for having seen the phone survive such an impact on the hard concrete. Hats off to Motorola for making such a sturdy phone.
PS: I have seen other devices. They didn't fare so good. Chasis and screen cracked easily even on the slightest impact.
Do share your experiences with the device Cheers !
Mods, if you feel this is an unwanted post, feel free to delete it, was just sharing my opinion.
Lucky u
In the day I got it from the store, my classmate let it fall screen-flat on the floor (I left it charging on a table).
She was terrified when it fell, but not a single scratch.
I dropped it twice but still not a single scratch & also I'm using a back cover?
sent from my moto g2
I threw it from about 4 feet distance trying to make it land on my bed, it bounced and fell hitting the left bottom corner, then bounced again and fell flat on the screen
no cracks or anything
@Gabboplano
Oh sweet jesus
Day one, I had mine sitting on the island in our kitchen. My overly excited teenage daughter came in swinging her arms around and hit my phone. The phone flew off the counter, banked off the oven door and landed face down on the tile floor. The impact was such that the back cover popped off. She immediately apologized and ran back out of the kitchen. I stood there staring at it on the floor for probably a good 10 seconds before i could even bring myself to pick it up and look...needless to say, not a scratch, crack, or ding anywhere on the device.
Do keep your replies and your stories coming.
Im in need of another phone, might purchase within a month or so. I am currently considering Asus Zenfone 5 and Moto G 2014. I've been reading around the Moto G 2 forums

I've been waiting to have a Moto X phone since long, doing a lot of things to try to have enough money. Finally I had enough to buy the Moto X 2014 in February.
I was always of those caring darn much for their phones, because we didn't want to buy a case or a bumper that would hide away all the careful design.
But today because of a silly accident, me taking my phone to check a notification, my friend raising his hand to grab out a handle, and there goes my Moto to the floor. I had never ever scratched a phone, and now this freaking Moto X 2014 is completely shattered, the Oled screen utterly corrupted, the touch layer totally outed.
Frak this thing, Frak Motorola, useless piece of design, I don't have enough money to live without the fear that I may break it again, because the designers can't make a phone that lasts without having a case.
Really? If you have a wreck is it the car manufactures fault?

Was this really even necessary? This is what happens when you drop phones that are almost all glass in the front. It doesn't mean Moto phones are garbage. I've seen more than enough of those terrible iPhone screens shattered but everyone praises their quality. That is just a risk you take when you don't keep your phone in a case.

Try dropping that glass S6 or an iP6+ without a case on and see what happens to those.
Get a supcase bumper case. Dropped my 2nd moto x several times and also at like head height and still no cracked screen.

cool story bro.....
Next to time buy a phone with titanium screen
Although it wont display anything
But hey it will survive the drop
My 1st gen Moto X's screen cracked without being dropped, so I consider this one a major improvement. Don't drop your phone-->screen won't crack (unless it's 1st gen Moto X).
I don't ever use cases on my phones, so I'm always super careful. A couple of months ago I took my phone out of my pocket with wet hands (dumb, I know...) and my Moto X went FLYING. It ended up 10 feet away on a hard tile floor. Not a scratch on the screen or the back. Some fellas are lucky, and some ain't.
Why isn't this locked?

Broke my screen - GoogleFI protection?

Hi All,
Haven't broken a screen in 4 years -first week with a bigger device slipped out of my hand when going into my pocket and the screen cracked. Weak as **** in my opinion but what are you going to do.
I contacted googlefi about nexus protect. They said they are going to be rolling out their own protection plan but could not tell me a launch date. Does anyone know anything about this?
I really can't believe this phone is that weak..

It must have hit just right. The other night I was reading in bed and nodded off for a second while holding the 6p. It hit the side table, then the hardwood floor. I'm not using a case, just a Skinomi full body and screen Tech Skin, but there wasn't a scratch. (phew!) As far as Fi offering protection, I gave up on that route and bought a Square Trade warranty instead.
Yes! Horrible phone because the OP doesn't handle it properly. Shame on Gorilla Glass and Huawei! /s

It did hit on the corner, the aluminum bezel bent right in which caused the glass to break - I have read many threads about the phone bending, I am a bit disappointed, I went with the 6p for the aluminum over plastic however this has only seemed to hurt me rather than help. Google told me their pricing options $5 / month and a $99 deductible however no idea when the plan was rolling out. They did advise I was eligible for when it comes out so now I guess I just have to wait. Phone works fine, just bothers me, I like my devices clean.

Wow, someone is a bit full of themselves aren't they? Correct, I do believe that a phone SHOULD NOT break with one drop from pocket height, I've owned countless smart phones in the past 4 years, none of which I broke the screen in that time; while I do not drop my device often and I take care of them mistakes happen. (My galaxy S4 still looks brand new). Therefore I am critiquing the build quality of this phone.

I'm not really sure what your point is, or why you are trolling. You are of no help to my thread. As I said mistakes happen, I made one, and dropped my phone. I'm not saying it is anyone's fault other than mine. I did however state I was DISAPPOINTED in the build quality as I do not believe one drop should crack a screen, especially from pocket height.
Just because someone doesn't agree with your opinions does not make them a troll. That word is thrown around WAY too many times around the here. I am not arguing with you, bud. But your bad luck doesn't mean that the phone is faulty. Glass shatters at different rates depending on speed, force, and angle. All of these phones you dropped did not drop at the same rate for these variables each time you dropped them. When the anger subsides, (and yes I get mad at myself also when i break something...human nature), just be an adult about it and chalk it up to a bad accident. Unless of course you are younger than an adult. In that case, I apologize and carry on

One drop on the corner will break a screen.
I have seen iPhones, Android of various brands break from pocket height.
All you need it the right location, angle, etc.
There is nothing wrong with the phone, you dropped it and it broke.
You can get it replaced right now. Project Fi offering one time replacements for $100 bucks
Problem Solved -
Bought my phone with AMEX they have 90 day protection against broken devices. I can file a claim with them and they will refund my purchase price.
Glad it worked out well for you...
