[Q] [POLL] Not rooting because of Knox

This is the most expensive phone(almost $900 AUD) I bought an I've never needed warranty before, but because of the Knox issue I'm afraid to root it and lose my 2 year manufacturer warranty.
Would you root your phone if there was no Knox counter?

i rooted anyway, im insured so if the phone software breaks i will smash the screen so no one will see lol

Just use Root de la Vega, I rooted and am on KNOX 0x0.
Nothing stopped me from Rooting. But flashing a custom recovery is another case, if that is what you meant.

Tempted to try that, but seeing a couple people trip the knox counter. I might wait a couple weeks before I try though. Coming from a Nexus 4, touchwiz doesn't seem that bad, so wouldn't really care about custom roms at the moment. Though rooting to get adblock and GMD gesture would be my main reasons.

I rooted my device and triggered the Knox counter so my warranty is void. I could care less as I want full control over my device and find manufacturers always hinder the device limitations. As for Knox... I'm sure someone will soon come out with a patch you can run to reset the counter. Unfortunately, I did not buy insurance with my device as I was ROOTING to use on another carrier but yeah, I would just go for it.

I just got the Galaxy Note 3 & Gear bundle on contract today through TelecomNZ. My contract was up for a renewal & the Galaxy S5 didn't seem to have any real advantage of the Note 3 so alas I didn't bother to wait.
Now however I am at a standstill...I would really like to root my device as soon as possible. I don't want custom firmware & would like to keep the stock so if there are official updates I can get them. Can anyone assist me please with a step by step to rooting my Note 3 preferably without tripping the Knox counter that I have just recently only found out about thus voiding my warranty. I don't want to void the warranty but I would like root so I can use Titanium Backup so if anyone can please provide me with a step by step to safely rooting my device I will be so appreciative for it.

without tripping KNOX for warranty ? no way Yours is the new bootloader for 4.3, therefore there are no rooting method which is KNOX friendly so far.

Okay in that case if I use CF-Root thus voiding my warranty will I risk losing anything else. I had an S3 for 2 years and sheer stupidity resulted in a cracked screen however that was the only time I had to use my warranty so essentially warranty shouldn't concern me but I don't want to trip this Knox counter and lose key features just for root which is all I really want. I don't plan on custom firmware flashing or anything so my OTA should still work via KIES right?
Just crossing the T's and dotting the I's before I possibly ruin a good thing.

Before you root make some checks. If your hardware is OK. Download from market multitouch app to see if your screen passes the 10 fingers test. It's really important. Then stress a bit your phone hardware wise and see if everything runs fine and no defects show up. If everything is OK then trip knox and be happy.

make a check on your device first for the multitouch (which some note 3 users experience this on their device). So if you need to claim warranty, you are still elligible before you trip the KNOX.
I don't know about KIES, because since my S2, S3, Note1, Note2, and till now Note3, I never use KIES to upgrade my firmware. I like to use ODIN more. And yes, though u root your device, you are still able to flash back firmware (newer version) through ODIN.

So basically if the app recognizes 10 fingers on the screen at once it's fine correct? I managed to get 10 fingers recognized easily so essentially I'm okay to root or should I be doing something else first?

Oh and can I just quickly add I love XDA. Thanks for the support guys. I took the time to click the thanks button for you all its not much but I do appreciate the guidance.

Read carefully please. The multitouch has nothing to do with root. The point is that some screens have issues. And before you loose warranty by rooting you should check it. Duh!

I have some question about Knox

I have bought me a new samsung s5 and I really want to flash a different rom and kernel but now I wonder if someone can tell me if the warranty is gone if I do that (if I understood it right it would trigger the knox)?,is there any way to reset the knox thing?

Look here http://omegadroid.co/wanted-knox-void-warranty-0x1/ for instance and KNOX cannot be reset atm. You can root with Towelroot without tripipng KNOX but flashing a kernel or custom recovery will set KNOX on 0x1. Yes, tripping KNOX will void warranty in some regions depending on local laws. In the EU it doesn`t unless the oem can prove that rooting was the cause of the defect.

Knox doesn't matter to most people. Samsung will, particularly in North America disavow a warranty if Knox is tripped. But most people don't deal with Samsung for warranty issues. They deal with their carrier and most carriers don't care about Knox.And stronger consumer protection legislation in the EU means that your warranty rights cannot be summarily dismissed. You signature suggests that you may be in the EU in which case it isn't likely an issue for you. Do a forum search to see how your carrier, which you neglected to name, handles warranty claims.
A forum search would have given you better answers to all of your questions. You would find threads demonstrating that Knox can be reset. But it has only been demonstrated in limited and experimental conditions so far. It's not yet clear how widely that could be applied and isn't likely to be easily accessible to you anytime soon. A custom recovery, custom kernel or some older root methods will trip Knox.
If you are unwilling to trip Knox, then use towel root which shouldn't increment Knox and Safestrap to run your ROM. It's a lot more cumbersome and limits your choices. But you pick your poison and drink it.

No, root is root. Towel root is just a nickname to the latest way to obtain root.

A forum search would have told you this.. look on the download mode page, in the system properties or install an app like Phone Info.

Towelroot uses an exploit so it won't trip your KNOX counter.
Using regular root on the GS5 trips KNOX.
But as stated above, flashing a custom recovery, kernel or ROM will trip KNOX regardless.

You can either use download mode like the guy who replied to you or download an app off playstore called Phone Info.

[Q] General inquiry about KNOX and FW types

Hello all,
I searched the forums round and round, and couldn't find my answers so I hope you will be able to help me out.
i'm looking for a new phone and decided I want to go with the S5. that was before i learned about KNOX and it's wonderful ways.
i'm a heavy modder, who will most definitely use a custom recovery and ROM/kernel.
my questions are:
1. would it be possible to flash a custom recovery / rom / kernel / modem despite KNOX being preset?
2. other then getting this 0x1 and voiding my official warranty, are there any other result to this? will something not work?
3. assuming I get an unlocked international phone, is there any need to mess/change my FW? or is that just part of guides for rooting without tripping KNOX ?
Basically, I want to be sure that I could do whatever I want to the phone without getting stuck or turning it unusable because of KNOX. my current phone is a Nexus 4 and it has been heaven. I want to preserve this feeling

Did you tried Towelroot method for rooting your device? I heard that doesn't trigger knox..

I would imagine my rooting the phone is the least of my worries.
as far as I know - and this is one of my questions - flashing a custom recovery and or rom will 100% trip KNOX.
not that I care, I just need to know if this is true..and my other questions as well

If you - as you say "i'm a heavy modder" Samsung phones are not for you

I've heard tales of people having issues flashing modems when knox is triggered. I have not checked that out for myself Joe have I searched any further into the matter.
I plan on breaking knox soon though because screw knox.

could you elaborate?
I don't really care about KNOX, and as long as I can mod away and jump back and forth between modems/roms/kernels - I don't care for the warranty.
If indeed there is truth in the matter, and modem flashing will become a problem if KNOX is tripped, then this would be a deal breaker for me on this phone.
anyone care to add more info here?

You can, but you will always have problems like network, connection,calls, bugs and so on
Samsung devices do not provide the old pleasure as previously
Knox killed freedom of developers and people who like customizations

No, KNOX tripping is only at the moment a warranty void solution for samsung. its like the flash count flags.
basically if you trip knox. you're already in it. you do what you want

I bought my phone with ANCE firmware and the KNOX was tripped in the first hour by CF-AutoRoot. Now I'm on ANG2, flashed with Odin and the modem is updated correctly.

Exactly, but with full stock image flush (including bootloader). The full stock tar.md5 form sammobile includes the modem/bootloader/rom. I think that the important thing is to have a modem which is compatible with the bootloader (same version). Didn't try to mix different bootloader/modem(baseband) versions.

Tripping KNOX will only disable the feature which allows you to store some data on a encrypted part of the device (Mostly comercial use) when KNOX is tripped any data stored on the 'special' partition is destroyed.
So there are only 2 things that will be affected, your warranty (Not a problem in Europe) and the special partition that I explained earlier.

I went and bought a brand new S5, and tripped KNOX within the hour. Man, did it feel sooo good !

Root without tripping knox is possible if a Engineering Bootloader surfaces.
But I'm not sure whether even it can retain the 0x0 for a longer time.

No the system scans for any abnormalities in the system and if it senses any changes boom knox tripped

It's extremely unlikely we will get root without tripping knox and like @Ausboy 2011 said, the system will trip knox if it detects any system modifications. Something as simnple as installing a root app could trip knox in this case.

They released an engineering bootloader for the galaxy S6 Edge. So it IS possible. We just need to wait for that time to come. With the engineering bootloader you can modify anything on the system without tripping knox. You just need to flash EVERYTHING back to stock at the same time if you chose to remove said bootloader. Also, I know in the beginning phases of use of this engineering bootloader they lost use of their fingerprint reader. So there's always that possibility too. But we'll just have to see if/when that time comes.

This actually varies depending on your location. For instance, in Europe, tripping knox will NOT void warranty. It is against EU law to refuse a hardware repair just because the software has been modified.

That's true, but most places don't care, as they just send it to Samsung and they deny warranty repair because of tripped knox. You can of course get the repair if you take the fight up.. But really, who want to? I sued the place where I bought my S6, because they would not repair a KNOWN HARDWARE failure on the S6 (pink dots on front camera) after I had rooted my phone. They sent it to Samsung and they denied. By law they should pay the repair then.
I was told I was right by Danish Customer Service, but they needed my phone for like 7-8 months and I did not have my S7 Edge there, so I would be without a phone, so I called it.. For really, what could I win? I knew I would upgrade when the S7 came out anyway.

Here in the UK, Samsung will repair even if Knox is tripped. I have had a few repairs over the years and have always had tripped Knox. Some other UK users on here have confirmed the same.

Because I was an idiot back then, I sent my phone in with a custom ROM, så they could not enter the binary, which was the reason they saw Knox was tripped.. A Samsung rep in one of the repair stores told me that it doesn't matter if it has a tripped Knox as long as we put the stock firmware on the phone and it is NOT rooted. If it's rooted they will refuse.
However, I have known people to get the repair even when rooted.
