I bought my G3 in July and yesterday the accelerometer stopped working. Along with that I have the common hairline crack by the microphone. LG claims to know nothing about the issue with the crack even though it's all over the internet. The crack which is a manufacturers defect, voids my warranty with Verizon so they won't replace the phone under warranty! Forgive the rant but I'm so furios about this terrible customer service.

That sucks man... I've had my G3 replaced cause of the crack, LG in my country admitted that this indeed was a manufacturerers defect and that they would replace or repair it. Try contact LG again, maybe you were in contact with an uninformed employee.
I bought it in July as well and in October the camera stopped working properly.
Basically after 5 seconds it starts making noises and constantly trying to focus between min. and infinity, so it's impossible to make a non-blurry photo.

Two defects in less than 6 months and LG not acknowledging a major build defect that is widely known is enough for me to say not too buy this phone.

So you're telling everyone on XDA to not buy this phone because you alone have had two issues with it?
By that logic, nobody should ever buy any phone, because get this, out of the millions of phones coming off the factory line, there's bound to be units that have issues. It's the very nature of technology.
It sucks you had a crappy experience, but that doesn't mean that everyone should steer clear. You're not the only person in the world. Just cause yours had issues doesn't mean it still isn't the best phone on the market right now.

The issue is far beyond my phone. LG claiming they know nothing about the issue that has been widely reported is an absolute joke. There are even articles that quote LG sources acknowledging the issue yet they have the nerve to deny the know about the cracking problem.

I have insurance. It's $100 to replace phone plus they denied my initial claim saying the accelerometer is a manufacturers defect. The crack voided my warranty for replacement through Verizon. I shouldn't have to change the part myself, it should be replaced free of charge.

Then you talk to lg about the crack not the accelerometor. And if they dont do it then kindly ask for a supervisor or hang up and call again. Being nice helps too. Its fairly easy to get what you want.

I wouldnt listen to OP to be honest. He is clearly complaining about Verizon which has nothing to do with LG as a company apart from being a reseller.
@op so that hairline crack has voided your Verizon warranty? .... then use your manufacturers warranty and get it sorted. Its LGs fault not Verizons so why would Verizon replace it? You need to speak to the manufacturer.
Sorry tha you had that experience..

Just got off the phone with LG again. They are still claiming they know nothing of the cracking issue. They said the best they could do is have me send my phone in for an evaluation and it would take up to 2 weeks and I may have to pay for the repairs. I just don't understand how they can justify this.

Why would you do a conference call with Verizon? That's what I don't understand. The phone was made by LG and you should use evidence of other users on here showing that it is a common fault and that it needs sorting. If it was me, I wouldn't bother contacting my service provider as like I have said, LG manufacture the device not Verizon.

I contacted Verizon because of the accelerometer issue. Verizon sends you a new phone under warranty and than you send back defective phone. LG wants me to send phone and wait two weeks without a phone. I need my phone for business and can't go two weeks without a phone.

I want to brick my hero because all my paint is chipping off (end button, back button, and home button) and the dust under the screen is gettin bad. They told me that it cannot be fixed and there is nothing they can do because it is a known "cosmetic" problem and the insurance only covers functional damage. If I give them a non functional brick then I can get my hero replaced. I am running Fresh 2.0d if that matters.
So you want to commit insurance fraud?? Awesome!

go to the nexus one thread and search "radios" flash one of them through recovery. or a gsm hero rom. or RUU and pull the plug during it.

People like me have a family plan with 5 phones on it (all of them have insurance so I pay $35 a month in cell phone insurance for the past 5 years) and have not filed a single insurance claim ever. I am sure that the $300 refurb unit that they will send me will not kill them. Hell, I've paid roughly $1700 in insurance fees over the past 5 years and if Sprint and Htc would have fixed this problem when out was discovered it instead of sweeping it under the rug I would not have to be shady about it.
I just took mine to the service center and they fixed all that for free and it took them 15 minutes.

1. Lots of dust under my screen.
2. Phone overheats when charging and running say google nav. (car charger)
3. More than 15 dead pixels all over the place.
my phone is going to have to be replaced. so my question is do you think they will give me a new Evo instead of another hero.

Sent from my HERO200 using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
More than likely, no. But you never know.
For me, historically, it's been:
1st phone defective, replaced with same model, up to three times, then they will offer a different phone. I seriously doubt that they will offer an EVO to replace the Hero since the Hero isn't at its end of life.
Think about this: You buy a Chevy Malibu, take it in 3 times for manufacturer's defects, it's a lemon, do they upgrade you to the Corvette? Nope.
I wonder if they'd do it if I offered some cash as well

No they don't give you a Vette, but they don't give you a refurbished car either. It is possible to get an EVO but you are gonna need to sweet talk them to death on phone. I have only once gotten upgraded after a few bad phones, that was the ENV2 to Voyager.
My guess is that you'll be aloud to move over to the Moment. Good luck with trying though. I bought 2 heros in December and both are still in perfect shape. No dust or paint chipping.
Can always ask...
The rule has always been that they will swap it for an equivalent phone of 'equal or lesser value'. I don't think the EVO is going to apply to that.

You're right, they don't give you a refurbished or new car of the same model. Because it's not in the terms of the warranty. Just like it's not in the terms of the Sprint warranty to upgrade to the top of the line model, only to repair or replace with the same or COMPARABLE model, and that repair or replacement is at THEIR option. They could just keep giving you refurbs over and over... wait, they already do!
just like everyone that had the htc diamond and touch pro, they waited a couple months after the tp2 and they all of a sudden there was post after post of sprint gave me a tp2 and swapped out my touch pro. You won't get it right away but after a couple of months it may become possible.
I moved to the Hero from 3 defective Pres, but I had to show the store assistant manager that I was nice, competent, and a repeat customer.
so if I am nice, maybe wave some cash around I might get what I want.. maybe I should send my wife into do it when the Evo comes out.. women seem to get what they want.. haha

I have always been upgraded to the latest and greatest for my phone problems..
titan=>mogul
mogul=>tp
tp=>tp2...
now what they wouldnt allow me to do is go from the tp2 to the hero
my understanding with the store i deal with is...
3 swaps within a 3month period will force them to ask you if you would like something else, and they will have a list, I also found out that they wouldnt allow me to go from winmo to android, nor from a keyboard to non ketboard or vice versa,
so i'm inclined to think that those of us with issues on the hero, will not be allowed to swap for the moment since it has a keyboard, and I've already tried that, and the swap phone needs to be of the same type...
and I have been told directly, they dont care about the phone.. its about continuing service.
I also have insurance and tep.
If you are having many problems, and it has been documented in Sprints notes ie you've called and complained with no results, the escalations department @ Sprint may be willing to deal providing you get a sympathetic one. Best Buy however told me when I. purchased my Hero and their ins. (have both) if unable to fix my phone itwould be replaced with a new Hero, if still being built, if not, then I would get the newest version of it. imo would be the Evo.-)

in order for this to work out to your advantage, you'd have to wait until the Hero is no longer available from Sprint, and even then it's a slim chance.
Unfortunate for you, you'll more than likely get another Hero, or a Refurbished Hero depending on the way you go about getting your replacement.

this is strange... do you know what department you talked to? If they performed the ticketing process that i believe they did, then you'll get a return kit with your replacement phone, and i would advise that you mail in the defective phone, if not, there's a chance that you will receive a charge in 2 bill cycles from receiving the replacement device showing a $500+ charge for the replacement phone.
In summation, if you get a return kit (a return envelope rather), then use it!... if you feel that you don't need to do this, i'd then advise to call Sprint and make sure that your account notes specify that you don't have to return the phone... otherwise, you need to.
What does getting the 6 dollar insurance cover?
- Fly like a G2
Lost, stolen, broken, dropped, water damage... it covers everything. But to get a replace you will have to pay a deductable. I believe its 130??
Sent from my T-Mobile G2
Yup, $130 incase the phone is stolen/lost. The warranty also extends to 2 years instead of 1. And they will service it free of charge if there is physical damage. I took it for the G2 due to the hinge, so over 2 years if the hinge gets REALLY bad I can get a replacement.
The warranty isn't for two years, its for as long as you have it out as long as they support it

@noodles2224
Yea you could say some lie like that BUT remember that #1 insurance companies are giving you a 500 dollar phone for 130. So they make it their business to know what happend to your phone. I had to file a claim for a lost g1 and they made me get police reports and everything before they helped me out. #2 every phone has an IMEI number unique to itself and it is registered on the network when the phone is in use (I'm not 100% sure of how it works but they know if that phone is being used or not.) AND if the insurance company finds out that the phone YOU purchased (with its unique IMEI number) that is now claimed to be stolen is being used they might go and find out who is using it or who knows...
I wouldn't risk the fine or jail time or court just for a phone for your girlfriend if you want her to have one sooo bad then you can save up for it or at least tell her you'll give her half or some thing...
Besides I wouldn't see the g2 as the best upgrade option I'm bummed out that it was released with an 800mhz processor... WHY? All the new high end phones are using 1ghz... but w.e. everyone has theyr likes and dislikes... I'm personally waiting for something else...

There's another warranty thats 1.99 a month and it covers all the same thing the 6 dollar rate does except for lost or stolen phones. Its only available up to 2 weeks after you purchased the phone. I think it's more likely to have a phone that has broken hinges and buttons instead of losing a phone.

Actually, not even that with the $130 deductible, you would only save $120.
But sticking to the original question it covers a lot and its easily worth the $6 if anything happens to the phone physically (cracked damaged broken stolen ran over, abducted by aliens) the insurance company, asurion, will replace it for $130 deductable.
And if anything like software wise or memory card reader messes up or something inside that's NOT your "direct" fault tmobile will replace it for free. But it can't be physically damaged or cracked screen or anything it has to be something inside or even bricked, you can get away with some good excuses and making believe you don't know anything when they ask, did you try to root it? Uhhh... what's that? Lol
Sent from my T-Mobile G1 using XDA App
The other great thing about a carrier having your IMEI# is that they can render it unusable on their or any other network within North America. I am about 98% certain that when you report a phone lost or stolen to Assurion, or Tmobile that their policy is to Blackllist the IMEI # of the phone.
As far as I can tell it only works on this continent, you could get a blacklisted phone to work in Europe.
It is similar to how a phone is added into a network, like say you flash a Verizon phone to Metro, they have to add the IMEI into their system so you can use it. In this case they just make it so you can't use it.
Also they do know if you have used a phone. I had a Nexus one and a Vibrant. I lost my Nexus while using my Vibrant. When I placed the claim with Assurion, they wanted me to call Tmobile and find out the last day my SIM card was used in my Nexus. Tmobile new exactly the last day my sim was in the Nexus.
So they know. And now, you know that they know.

I had similar thoughts when I was younger and even talked to a T-Mo rep about it. I learned that if at any point you insert your own SIM card into the phone you claim was lost or stolen, you can expect a not-so friendly visit from the insurance company's lawyers or investigators.
Say you give your phone away to your girlfriend. The first thing they will do is check the SIM card and the account it is tied to. If you don't share the same address, or are linked in some way say through relatives or former addresses (anything a basic background check would show), then they will check the call history and see if you two know each other. It doesn't take a high school education to figure out if your phone was stolen or not. Claiming it was lost won't do much for you either.
I wouldn't be surprised if T-Mo can now remotely disable devices. If the phone is on and transmitting, it can be located pretty easily as well, whether that's for prosecution or recovering losses. I am pretty sure that if you make a claim with the phone in-hand and turn it on, you'll find yourself in trouble very quickly. If **** goes down, good luck convincing anyone, especially a lawyer or judge that your girlfriend stole it.
They don't take fraud lightly; I don't think you should as well.
I've been lucky enough to have never needed my phone replaced and I've had over 30 or 40 phones thanks to connections at best buy.
My question is why do people hate them? Obviously your "brand new" (and i use parentheses because people think a 8 month old phone doesn't deserve a refurbished one as a replacement) has the exact same chance of not working properly. I can understand one month old but anything past that is not new anymore.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA Premium App
I think part of the issue with phones is that people don't want something that someone has had pressed against their cheek or stuffed in their pocket for the past few months.
This is apart from the obvious fact that a refurb it may still be broken.
I have personally had very good luck with refurbed cameras.

Honestly, because I've never received a refurbished phone that didn't fail on me within a month.
I don't care if it's "refurbished" or "new" I just want it to work 100% and not fail on me.
I'm inclined to agree that after a certain point you aren't really 'deserving' of a brand new device. I think it's simply the fact that the device isn't 'brand new and out of box' and has been 'handled.' I guess I can sort of understand why people might have a problem with it, but if it works and isn't entirely flawed in some manner, then what is the problem? I had 2 refurbished PS3's die on me in a year. Obviously I got 'lucky.' In that regard I understand why someone would be hesitant to get one. But more often than not refurbs actually work as intended. Shocking. But the practice is a tried and relatively true one.
I think you should get a freebee.. one free new phone. Anything after that.. refurbished

I just activated my refurbished phone. It took Sprint a month to get one for me. This one doesn't charge at all. The store said it would take at least a week to get me another one. When I asked what I should do about my phone in the meantime, the employee told me I could bring my phone into the store everyday to have them charge it. He was serious.
The icing on the cake is that they won't call when the new phone comes in. I'm supposed to call them everyday and ask if it's there. But the store doesn't ever answer their phone! After going through the phone tree twice, it just says "Sorry, all reps are busy, please make an appointment online." Somehow this is the only store in all of San Francisco that can even do replacements. I ****ing hate Sprint. [/RANT]

I think you should have to get a refurbished phone, then if that fails you should be allowed a new one.

From what I have expierenced, refurbished phones are rarely problem free. Thus causing people to question refurb phones and the quality control that goes into refurbishment.

Call tech support and tell them your situation and they can send you one over the phone. I have the same problem in the southbay. The store always has at least a 45 min wait before you can even get help and they never answer their phone.

You mean sorta like download a new one?? Gotta love Sprint's technology
Will they send you a phone if they can't verify the issue? Is there a specific support number you call?
I've never received a replacement "over the phone", it has always taken overnight.
Refurb'd phones are put back together poorly IMO, my wife got a replacement that started to seperate from the case, we complained, they sent a "New" EVO the next day.
I have two refurb'd that are just fine though, we have 8 EVO's.

The term over the phone refers to the fact he can get a replacement by speaking to someone over the phone instead of having to deal with the situation he has at his local sprint store.

Yea they will. You should be honest about the problem because if you lie and sprint determines there is no issue with they phone they can charge you an additional amount.

Sprint has questionable refurbishment techniques. I've been told that the whole process is outsourced. I've read a lot about people getting refurbished phones that have known problems, like screen separation and bright spots on the screen. In many cases, it seems likely that those are the reasons why the phone was returned in the first place, and their refurbishing does not take care of the issue for which the phone was returned.
That said, I used to be on a Centro, and I went through three new ones before I ended up with a refurb. The refurb lasted a hell of a lot longer than the new ones. The only problem with it is that it was kind of gross when I got it. It had smudges and one of the buttons was a little cracked. But the phone itself worked great for the year and a half that I used it.
And yea, there's the gross factor too. Who knows who had their face pressed up against my refurb phone. Ick.
I don't like the idea that it could have been thumped around, and only the most obvious failing component was replaced, leaving you with a "ready to break" phone. That being said, I've never actually had a problem with a refurbished unit, (phone or other). All in the head I guess.

I've seen as many new Evo's that had the screen separation issues, charger issues etc etc. I can see there being a bit more of a chance that a refurbished device isn't going to be up to par. I like the idea of maybe a new device and every device following is a refurb. As for the dirty screens ... maybe that's how I caught that face tattoo known as cheek herpes.

Well... DUH, some people have no sense of humor, must be due to lack of root... I dunno.
So far only on my first refurb from August last year. So far so good (knocks wood). My launch day (002)Evo's 4G got up, and gone (radio was shot). The refurb is a launch day 003. As with anything you put in contact with your body for the first time you should wipe it down first even if new(some of the toxic chemicals used in production are rather nasty).
delete please i misunderstood the asurion policies.
Asurion insurance is on the specific phone, identified by the IMEI number. I don't see how it would help to swap the SIM, since the insurance is not on the phone number.

It would be on my line I have insurance on my line not my wife's she broke her phone so if I swap Sims it would show my line meaning the line with insurance, tied to the account

I found a page with Asurion info. about the equipment covered. It appears that if you swap a phone to a line, there has to be a record of airtime logged for that phone right before the phone was damaged, in order for that phone to be covered. It also states that the coverage is tied to the phone's IMEI.

New ones are about $280-320 on Ebay with Valid ESN, thats how I replaced mine after similar drop as your wife. I had my original repaired but it had colored lines and ghosting occasionally due to repair shop doing something wrong (They replaced screen 4 times due to various problems and too much pressure under display) when it seperated a little it started working properly after a few days of getting a refund. They finally gave up and gave me a refund and I used that to buy one on eBay and now I have 2 working phones lol.
nice i am going to go to the whole repair shop first if all else fails ill sell the flacky one on ebay and buy a new one lol i paid 200 for mine i got lucky and came with a wireless charger and a quick view case but this case is **** i am looking at iceptio's and what not but vzw cases are very hard to find stupid verizon and changing it to make it there own!
