[Q] Transformer Infinity, Note 10.1, or Nexus 10?

New to the forums, looking to by my first tablet. Not really interested in the ipad 3. I want a tablet which will be good for watching videos and playing a bit of games, also want a good web browser. Which tablet will be ideal out of these 3? My budget is $500, so the price factor doesnt really matter. Neither the s pen or the keyboard dock appeal to me. Thanks!

The Infinity would be the worst drain of money you could even consider. For its price, the hardware is underpowered - typing on it right now, Browser (stock, not Chrome - it's too slow to run Chrome smoothly) force closed (this is TF700 hate-post V2) and the keyboard froze for a good 10 sec when I got back in. Build quality and the like is down to chance, but even if you get a well-built one, the I/O sucks, Tegra 3 can't push 1080p without crying to its mother and to be honest, Asus' software updates are unreliable. The alarm clock's still broken from the one before last.
The Nexus 10, on the other hand, has the most powerful processor in any mobile device right now, and it is well-equipped to power the much, much higher resolution it has to offer. You can pretty much guarantee that it will provide you with the best Android has to offer on tablets both now and for a long time into the future. The Infinity is already obsolete.
Also, the Note's only real draw is the S Pen, though for some that is pretty significant (it's like a Wacom tablet computer). So if that isn't what you're after, save yourself some money and grab the Nexus 10.

The NEXUS hands down, 100%. It is the fastest Tab on the earth with the best screen of all. If only I did not buy a N7.
If I was looking to buy a 10in tab, then I would go for the nexus 10.

I'm still within my return period at Best Buy -- and will be bringing my Infinity and dock back, and getting a Nexus 10. Build quality for mine is fine -- actually very solid, nice form factor, superb battery and nice display. But it IS a bit laggy, and between ASUS and NVidia, there's way too much in the way of arcane routines to go through in order to unlock, root and safely flash it. Nexus 10 promises to be a much better experience in this respect. I'll be getting the 32GB N10.

If the Nexus 10 had 3G then I don't think I would hesitate to chose it, I have a nexus 7 and I'm thinking about giving it to my wife and getting a new Nexus 7 32GB+3G version, from the look of how the nexus 7 is going, I may just wait for the Nexus 10 in a few months when they bring out the 64GB+3G nexus 10 (although 32GB is probably more likely, I may just hold out for the 3G version)

to your question, easy choice. nexus 10, of course. Im using a Note 10.1 and it sucks really bad.

Nexii have classically been rom magnets, though there is always the danger that they've finally released enough to dilute this effect. Also important is the number of users, which is also correlated to the number of roms. The 10 inch android tablet is not proven (but this is probably its best chance).

CleanRom on the Infinity is an Asus ROM, trimmed lovingly. It's still a manufacturer ROM, though, and I would bet you 2 Nexus 10's that the Asus UI never makes it to the n10.
I returned my infinity for the reasons in post 2. I'm not bitter, I just think my $500 is better spent elsewhere when my phone is better than my tablet...

Sorry for my horrible knowledge on the devices lol im new to all this, after all, I'm coming from an apple product. Will there still be a way to obtain flash on the n10?

It's not worth spending your money on TF700T because it lags crazy! I'm finally Unlocked (Clean rom 2.3) But what's the point? I just voided my warranty for a device that can't run smoothly without a Custom Rom. Get a device that actually runs smoothly without any type of tweaking.
My Infinity works great but It's not the same feeling like i had before i unlocked it (Fear of Bricking). I might even buy N10, Hopefully i don't get same experience i had on infinity.
Since that is cleared up, I would say Nexus 10 seems like a better deal in Hardware but If you want features like S-Pen and what not then Note is great. But at end of the day, you will be frustrated with slow OS than not having the features (S-Pen, Multiscreen)
Wait till there are couple of reviews for Nexus 10, I will not buy anything else until i see a video for it.

yea, if I were you I would avoid the TF700, especially if you don't want/need a keyboard dock.
It has a nice deisgn, and a great screen, but it is laggy as crap and I haven't rooted mine so the overall experience sucks.
On paper it's almost the perfect tablet. Unfortunately Asus really dropped the ball on this one.
I'm probably getting the Nexus 10. Then selling it if Asus makes a really nice Transformer replacement at CES. Or I'm switching to Windows 8. I have no idea what I want to do.

People , I was checking the App store , and found a good number of Apps supported for the tablet , Apple may boast a 275000 app selection , but many of them are just show off (like the brain explorer , titanic time) and so forth , they look good for a couple of weeks , until their charm fades away
The main ones are content comsumption apps , and the market has a handful of them (CNN , cnbc , even TV streams) Google docs on google drive is a charm to use.
PLus I wont be bogged down by itunes all the time ,
Nexus 10 is a definate buy if u r not in the apple ecosystem

Mm. One of my key reasons for not buying anything Apple is to use one to its fullest, you need the whole iRange, and Mac has the disadvantage vs Windows when it comes to ecosystem (especially games) so I don't really want to.

Buy a wicked Windows PC/laptop for 1/3 the price of a mac with comparable hardware
Do this
Use in full screen mode

To those who are saying the Note 10.1 and the Transformer Infinity are ****ty tablets, how could you possibly think that? Have you never used a Coby tablet running GB?
To answer the OPs question, don't buy a tablet at all. Tablets are transitional technology, they won't be around forever and the ones that are brand new depreciate in six months and become totally outdated in a year. Even if tablets weren't a completely pointless waste of money, even if you could find some productive use for it that would make it practical for you to own one, no matter what tablet you buy it will be totally outdated in a year. So I say spend your money on something else.

After having all three, I'm holding on to my Nexus 10. The my experience with the ASUS TF700 was frustrating, and after multiple returns for a variety of issues I got a "good" one. Stock it's a frustrating experience, and making the necessary modifications voids your warranty.
The Note was a great tablet, although I'm not a fan of TouchWiz it wasn't so bad. It stomped the TF700 in web browsing too. The S-Pen was a novelty for me though, so I figured I'd save some money.
The Nexus is a beast, no regrets.

For your requirements, watching movies and playing games, I'd recommend:
1) Galaxy Note 10.1
The CPU/GPU and resolution are balanced right and all games are fast. Screen on battery life is consistently ~8 hours. Benefit is it's not just a consumption device but also creativity and productivity with pen for drawing, paperless note taking, etc. Price was dropped to $499 for 32GB version to compete with Nexus 10.
2) Nexus 10
Has potential but games need to be optimized for it and the ridiculously high resolution. Battery life, sound quality and screen quality are behind Galaxy Note 10.1. It's a brand new device so there are minor issues that need to be addressed with the upcoming OS updates.
Skip the Tegra3 Infinity. When looking at Google Play comments for games I always see people reporting performance and games not working on TF201/300/700 devices while it's fine on other devices. I had the Nexus 7 and some games like Nova 3, etc. are laggy while fine on the other devices.
Another option unless you're anxious to get something now is to wait closer to Christmas and hope for new devices to appear. A Galaxy Note 12" 1080p with 4-core Exynos 5450, 4GB DRAM, etc. would be ideal.

N10 or N7????

I will be getting a Nexus tablet this Xmas, it will either be 32gb N7 or 16gb N10.
I'm very torn to which I should go for.
I currently have an iPad and I'm happy to be leaving IOS but I'm not sure how I'd 7" display on the N7.
My gut feeling is N7 due to the size but I'm not sure due to the size!!!
I know indecisive but that why I'm asking for your opinions.

I also have a iPad and going to transfer over to the N10.. I believe you have to think about what you going to do with the device the N7 is more portable to take on the road with you .

One thing I've in the past is that once you have a large screen and you've gotten used to it if you go to a smaller screen it will feel inadequate and "too small".
I owned a Nexus One before buying the Galaxy Nexus and when I went to use my N1 again just to factory reset it, it felt like a toy.
I would say get the Nexus 10 since you were on the iPad. You'll be very much satisfied I hope! I know I'm getting the N10!

Well the one advantage is that the 7 is sold in most tech stores, Currys/PC World, Comet (well for a while!) even tesco's sell it over the counter so go have a look at it, they are normally right next to the ipad so you can compare,

Yep I've been in to those to have a good hands on feel, and I'm impressed. Is the N10 going to stores or is direct from Google only?

I think you are right on with the size of the N7 being one of its biggest advantages and also one its biggest disadvantages.
The cost is also something to consider, as N10 is twice as expensive as the N7.
My gf and I have a N7, also a (1G) ipad. For home use, I find the size of the ipad better. Even on the go, the screen size on the N7 is a nice step up from a phone. However, if you are like me and will always have a phone on you, the N7 for what I need to do isn't worth hauling around. The N7 is "more portable" then the N10 or iPad, but both devices can often be a pain to haul around anyway. The iPad's screen size however makes a big difference. I think I remember calculating that my GN had about half the screen area of the N7, and the N7 had about half the screen area of the iPad.
Also, the screen quality on the N7 is solid, but the screen on the N10 will obviously look much better, and will be twice as big.
In my opinion, I would go with the N10. Since you came from using the ipad, I think you would miss the size.

That's awesome feedback, real world application, which is the most important. I'm thinking that if I was getting my 1st tablet then it would be a N7 but as I'm replacing an iPad then it will have to be the N10.

I'm having a similar decision problem. Being a college student I'm always on the go and thought that the nexus 7 is for me. My problem is the size of my phone. The HTC EVO 4g LTE is pretty mondo sized (4.7in) and I'm trying to decide if I should just skip the 7 completely. Another problem is the price difference and practicality.
I read a lot of PDFs (take notes from them as well), and watch a lot of YouTube lectures. I've been looking around for the 10 just so I can get a hands-on experience and comparison, but can never find a demo.

I have both units now and each suits a different need.
But in a one-size-fits-all showdown, I think you're going to find the N7 is too small to really deal well with most PDF files, you'll be spending a LOT of time zooming. 3 inches of extra screen real estate and twice the pixels makes the N10 great for PDF viewing (well, as great as a 10" device can be with the PDF format).

I'd say it's worth it to get the Nexus 10, the nexus 10 is surprisingly light for a 10.1 inch tablet while still being well built, it's also pretty thin so think of it as carrying around a small notebook (Paper notebook). In reality it's not going to be that much more tablet to lug around then the Nexus 7, and the Nexus 10 would certainly be lighter and easier to carry around then even a comparable ultra-portable laptop of comparable size.

I was trying to decide between a Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 a short while ago... went as far as making cardboard cutouts of both just to see how they would fare with general usage. Ended up choosing the Nexus 10

I own a N7 & 10 and believe me you wanna go w the 10!!! I had probs w/ my "2" 16gb Nexus 7s.(so did tons of other ppl) Defective first and now speakers pop on mine and my sons. I take care of my devices.. Never turned volume up past 1/2. I still have 1 my son uses and if your in a room and its night time or very quiet , you can hear a pop coming from the speakers. Very annoying!! N10 has been flawless for me thus far. I have not seen any of the issues others have. No reboots...etc. I'm sure the devs will fix all that in time. Open source rules!!:

Well, maybe I'm too late but .. here are my thoughts:
Since you write that you're always on the go .. the N10 is not a tablet you quickly grab from you bag, use it, and put it back in a few seconds. It's made for the full couch experience. If you intend to mostly use it while you're sitting in the cafeteria or in a lecture etc. .. that would be not a problem at all. If you need more mobility the N7 would be the right choice, I think.

As an engineering student ill be doing a lot more sitting and reading, but I know what you mean it was a tough decision. But now I wait :thumbup:

Here are my thoughts as I am running both an N7 and a N10.
The 7 was my first tablet and though it was the first generation, I did get the one with the loose screen. As I'm a computer geek by trade and lifestyle, i had the tools to pop it open, tighten a few screws and put it back together. The N7 has never come loose since. I keep it in a case that I originally bought for my 1st gen B&N Nook and it actually fits perfectly.
As for it's use, i have used it for everything from playing Angry birds to using it as a map for getting around Europe. It tethered to my Galaxy S3 with 0 issues and works very well and the battery life is impressive. I can get 3 full movies back to back without charging and still have enough juice to read for a couple hours. I have to say i have been thoroughly impressed by it. The N10 would have been a huge pain to try and use as a map around Europe. and it would have been a large target for thieves and muggers as well. The 7" looks like it could be anything from a tablet to a little hand written notepad esp when you are trying to find your way around somewhere. I will agree with everyone that the PDF functionality does suck and as the only thing i keep in PDF are manuals, then yes having the N10 would be better and yes the 1st gen did come with a loose side but as i said i'm a computer geek and it was an easy fix for me. And i do still use it to read books lol. My gf also bought herself one and uses it daily for ready, games and internet, she loves it.
As far as an overall rating the only downs being the screen and the pdf issue. I give it a 9 out of 10 because i don't see these issues as major things. I also never had any speaker issues.
Now as to the N10 I only got it last night and so i haven't had time to do much more than root, unlock the device and add a few things too it. But this morning i was able to show it off the a MD of the company I work for and show him how well it works as well as buy an "office suite" for 99 cents and be able to build files that were already MS office 2010 compatible. The quality of the screen is beautiful and the ability to read comic books as well as pdf is nice. I also intend in time to use this to replace my 1.5 year old laptop. (though nothing wrong with it) i can run citrix through Android and all i really need is a working keyboard. (though I would like a usb to BT transmitter, never seen one though) because i love my ergo split keyboards, hate typing on regular ones.
As for the N10 functionality, so far it's used all the stuff i have on both my S3 and my N7 without question (minus stickmount). I'm going to see if my Sirius satellite radio app works and that way i can use the company wifi to list to my radio account like i do on my phone. So far it's pretty good but but i'll give you more thoughts when i have used it.

Pre-ordered last week, but decided to cancel order

I get irrationally excited about each new Nexus device, and as such I pre-ordered the N9 as soon as I was able to (32GB version).
Today, I decided that the device is not worth the $500+ cost (including tax and shipping for the 32GB model). I already have a N7 (2013, 32GB), and N10 (16GB), and both still work great for my needs. All I really do is web-browsing and watch movies/TV (Hulu Plus, NetFlix, Google Play Movies) on my tablets, so what is this new device going to offer me in terms of real-world performance? I am a bit of a spec-whore, but the new N9 only has 2GB of RAM and a non-interesting PPI, so I don't feel like the N9 gives any bragging rights.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the N9 will be great, but for my needs, this will be the first Nexus device not making its way into my mailbox.
The N6, on the other hand, will definitely be replacing my N5!

I certainly understand thinking that neither is worth the upgrade, but the Nexus 9 looks to be a much bigger bump over the Nexus 7 than the Nexus 6 vs the 5. The 9's SoC is much more powerful than the 7's, while the 6 is more of a modest upgrade to the 5.

Nexus 9 is not a successor of the N7, it is from the N10

I agree with this, but I was shocked at the nexus 6 price! No way I can afford that for a while, that's for sure! 4 kids near Xmas lol. I am interested to see the specs and price of the oneplus two! This company has a bright future, Thay just have to lose the frustrating invitation only system.

For my smartphone, the increased screen size of the N6 is useful for things like GPS, watching movies, and reading. I already watch a pretty large amount of video content on my phone, so a bigger screen will improve the experience.
Also, the N6 just looks so pretty

My Nexus 7's touch screen decided to stop working on the hardware side after a year (it took a hard fall while moving this summer but it was in a case) and I couldn't RMA it because the warrantee expired. I decided that the Nexus 9 was worth it for me because of the k1 Denver which is a huge upgrade over the N7 (2013) processor. The 2gb of RAM isn't ideal, however its still more than enough for me to play some games and use it for various things. I am also excited about the larger size, I had a LG G Pad 8.3 until it got water damaged and I miss the larger tablet experience. This summer was full of bad luck with devices for me so I am eager to start fresh with s great new tablet. I considered the Tab S for a while but I couldn't get over that terrible home button and capacitive keys on it. I know everyone is different and the price is high for a nexus but it's still cheaper than a pos ipad.

The nexus 7 can be sluggish at times when rendering complex web pages.
Try androidcentral for example. So I decided to swap it out.

I just can't accept a 32GB device. Not now. Not after I've had several devices now with 64GB of storage. My first Android tablet, 3 years ago...32GB plus a 32GB card.

I'll swap the N10 for the N9 and keep the N5 and it's a pretty easy decision for me.
While the N10 still is a great device with a superb display (for 10" tablet) it could use a little more power. I use it to read on the web most of the time and it's often sluggish while browsing now. That especially became apparent after I got the N5.
What's keeping me from getting the N6 is the size and also the price. 6" is just too big for a phone that's supposed to reside in my pocket. If it would be priced in the range of its predecessors I maybe would try it for the fun of it, but at 700 - definitely not.

Really like the sound of the Motorola droid turbo, monster of a phone! Also has a very large battery almost 4000mah

I pre-ordered an lte one from Best Buy and have similar thoughts Maybe the nvidia shield, but, decided to go through with it, and yes I feel its expensive. But had $25 in reward dollars and can pay it off over a year.
I do need a tablet with built in lte do to the fact we do a lot of short trips with medicore wifi, or the hotel charging for medicore wifi. Yes I can wifi tether but it burns the battery down on the phone, and being away, use that as well. Still have about a month to thnk about it, and if I change my mind, can just not open up the packaging and bring it the local BestBuy for a refund.

Depends on needs I suppose. It's no secret the N9 is targeting more productivity-oriented people. If I were primarily a multimedia/games consumer, I wouldn't be terribly interested in the N9.
For me though, I'm a student, and when I'm not doing student stuff, I'm generally doing emails, vid chat, web browsing, maybe a casual game occasionally like poker or something, so the N9 16GB is actually all I need. To be honest the only time I ever feel space constraints is when it comes to loading up a bunch of apps (which I'll never use) or putting HD movies on the device.
Plus, the availability of 64GB otg usb sticks for 40 or so bucks make that a non-issue really.
As for phones, I see no incentives to go from the N5 to the n6. Technically the N5 is still a better phone than most people are using, not to say that from an elitist sense, but the fact that as far as tech specs go, apps and everything else, it's got what most people need (or don't need considering the recent NFC shutoff debacle at walmart and other major retailers)... Especially considering I'm the type of person who will be carrying my N9 just about everywhere. I'm not going toward this "I'll read and browse on my phablet" trend. 6" is too small to enjoy doing tablet stuff, and it's too big to be a comfortable phone, in the pocket and in the hand.

It's kinda hard to hear someone say that the N9 is too expensive and then decide to go for the much more expensive N6 instead.

I agree that not everyone needs a ton of storage, but there's NO excuse for them to not even give us the option. OTG sticks out, can get broken off, and uses power. So no, it's not a non-issue.

I can certainly understand the confusion, other than the fact that I didn't say the N9 is too expensive. What I said is that the cost of the device is not worth it FOR ME, given the devices I already have and the usage requirements for said devices. N9 will no doubt be a great device, and if I were buying a new tablet today, it would be the first (and only) one on my list.

Well, if it didnt have knox I would have just gotten rid of the damn touchwiz. But then you'd have warranty problems in case the tablet decides to die someday.

Just feel a little bit let down...

Well, ive been using my nexus 9 now for a few days and i just feel a little bit let down knowing how much ive spent and the results ive got. This feeling is purely regarding the hardware as i love lollipop and all the benefits that brings.
I thought i was happy with my nexus 9, well i was until i picked up my nexus 7 2013 and wow.. So light and it felt really nice! No sharp corners and the screen is loads better than the 9. This got me thinking, ive paid double for the 9.
What i would of loved is the 7 just resizing to the 9, using the same style and design (with wireless charging) im not over bothered about the new cpu if im honest, the one in the 7 is fast enough. Plus lollipop feels really slick anyway when i tried the preview version. They would of sold bucket loads, ok a few people would of wanted more but its better that than have loads of dissapointed customers.
Ive owned the Nexus 4 / 5 and both 7's and i even sold my 5 hoping to buy a 6.. Well until they released the price, so im back using the 4 again and very happy with it.
Also to top it all off and rub salt in the wounds HTC in the USA did a 50% off sale on the N9...ok it was only for a day but surely they wouldnt do that if they were losing money on each device would they?
Needless to say my N9 will be going back as faulty for a full refund due to its screen flicker. I love the 4:3 screen ratio so im looking for a alternative.. Any ideas?

I believe the only alternative with a 4:3 aspect ratio would be an iPad.

Can you do a Nexus 7 and Nexus 9 side by side video review?
I'm curious how they compare performance wise, i.e. page loads, refresh rates, stuttering, what movies look like on the N9 in the horizontal orientation etc.

Don't have a tripod, would be tough to hold the camera and perform actions at the same time on both tablet, but I'll see what I can do.

Think its more your wallet that has hurt your view of it. (in my opinion) and I get that. That and lollipop is great its supposed to be faster and not just on new devices this was the goal starting from KK. So shelling out that much money when you have the N7 may hurt a bit. I like the portability of the N7 Spent most my time with the n10 though. I just prefer bigger for some tasks.
The 50% sale only lasted an hour or less and was more hype than anything. Still there is a large markup on these much like there is on every premium device.
The screen flicker i don't have but if I were you I would definitely do an exchange or just send it back.
Personally I have been enjoying it but haven't spent enough time with it yet ( one day)

I'm enjoying mine a lot. I've had both Nexus 7's and I liked the 2nd gen a lot. But it didn't feel like a tablet to much because it wasn't really much bigger than my phones (Nexus 5 and OnePlus) this is a good upgrade. I'm waiting for more performance tweaks in future updates or new Roms. It hiccups from time to time but not much to worry about.

The N9 screen is a LOT better than the N7's (lightbleed aside). I would go as far as to say that it has the best overall screen of any Nexus device that came before it in terms of color accuracy, fidelity, and viewing angles.

I share the thoughts of the op. I have both the n7 FHD and n9 and ive only been using the n7 since every time I grab the n9 the light bleed, loose back and over heating bothers me so much. I'm returning it for sure. Maybe I'll give it another shot once they work out all these issues.
And also, just noticed today when turning the n9 on, that it has yellowish spots when the screen is black but backlight is on (as in when turning on).

Some people think buying The Shield will make them happy. Sure, it's a great tablet, I had one before my N9 I know but check out their board on xda. It's just as littered with complains of this fault and that fault.
I've never heard of a device with ZERO complaints about something.

I am loving my N9. I have the Asus TF701T also and now that ive been using the N9 for a week the only time i pick up the Asus is when i want to play a game that is not compatible yet on my N9. I have none of the issues that others are complaining about. Feels great, looks great and works great.
That's all folks.

I am finding a LOT more reviews where they are saying the N9 was a missed chance... there is no excuse for the squidgy back and light bleed on a premium tablet...
I'm thinking Nokia N1 now... it has the laminated screen and the aluminum body the N9 should of had.

So, what tablets have similar specs to the N9, but without the issues, regardless of cost? I'm currently waiting for LTE version (though maybe I'll grab a sand one when it comes out if I decide I can live without LTE), but I'm definitely open to a better alternative. I know there aren't any that have 64 bit processors or Android 5.0 (yet). But beside those, is there any other Android tablet that's around 8-9 inches and has similar performance. I mostly will use it for web browsing, games, and testing apps that I've developed. Thanks!

My experience with the shield tablet has been cracking, case separation, weak wifi and battery drain while plugged in.

I too was set on the Nexus 9 originally, But after Issues with Amazon about my pre-order, and reading up on some first impression reviews. I decided to get the Shield Tablet and honestly, I don't regret it. I was set on that 4:3 aspect ratio but the 16:9 is just natural already, coming from having a kindle fire previously.. With the Lollipop update, man this thing flies. No lag, No crashes (yet). I got viper4android and modified the audio configs and the sounds is fantastic. And having an Sd Card slot makes it better.

Have the Lte version for 7 weeks now and no cracks, no case separation, build quality is perfect and no problems with Wifi and Lte.
Just works perfect and with Android 5L update it's even little faster.
Comparable Nexus 9 with Lte still is here in Europe € 165,00 more expensive and has no MicroSd slot.
But you have to make your own choice.

Save your money on the iPad and N9. I bought my WiFi version a couple weeks back and the only problem I had was that something borked my MicroSD during the 5.0 update. Aside from that this unit rocks and wouldn't give it up for anything.

I have a pile, and I mean a PILE of tablets, I'd take the nexus 9 over anything out today.

I gave up on the Nexus 9 and went back to the Shield Tablet (LTE).
Had planned on selling the Shield but in the end, I couldn't get over the build quality issues with the N9.
I tried to like it, I really wanted to, had been looking forward to it since it was announced. The first unit I received was ok for the most part, but then it just randomly crapped out. The replacement had horrific light bleed, something that usually doesn't bother me at all. In the end, it didn't make sense to give up LTE and expandable storage, while paying a $100 premium.
That said, I know Nvidia has had their share of build issues w/ the Shield Tablet, but I've been fortunate so far...and that's likely been the difference maker. I might consider an N9 again when the price drops (if nothing better is out), if I could get my hands on a decent unit.
I've also owned dang near every Asus/Samsung/Nexus tablet since the original Xoom.
They've all had their pros, cons, and quirks...but right now I'm most satisfied with the Shield...just my $0.02

Have you tried the nst? Because the nexus9 does not compare. In my opinion, just like Apple products, a hype product but implemented poorly... Htc could have done so much better if they didn't target Ipad lovers. It's too expensive and it does next to nothing. The 4:3 ratio doesn't make sense. Lack of sd card slot is just a bad decision. Sorry, but i can't agree

Add me to the list of people who had their heart set on a Nexus 9 for weeks and ended up going with the Shield instead. The Shield is by far my favorite Android device of all that I have owned or used.

Same, I'm Nexi guy for last three years only, I passed this year and went with team Shield. I'm quite happy with it, even with supposed issues as what device doesn't have them. But this with LTE an SD card ability wins.

Shield tablet. Not only is it a better build quality, but it has expandable memory slot up to 128 GB, and it is cheaper. On top of that if you plan to do ANY type of gaming; the Shield will come out on top (especially with the insanely nice controller) . Nvidia is also very quick with pushing updates. Shield is also the only tablet besides the nexus devices that have lollipop . Oh yea... and it has a built in stylus with some pretty cool bundled stylus apps that utilize the K1 to its fullest!

As with most people here who were set on the N9 I went with the Sheild Tablet. I actually had a Galaxy Tab S 8.4" for a few months, both Tab S and Shield for a few weeks and now just the Shield
Few turn offs for N9, like most no expandable storage and being forced to shell out almost $500 for 32gb but a big downer too for me is I can't palm the N9 with 1 hand comfortably.
What sold me on Shield Tablet, SD card obviously, the pen is a neat bonus especially for Citrix my company uses, magnetic cover is bad ass, totally worth the $40, compact form, I can stick with Kitkat and xposed for multi window and other features (having Google Maps and Waze open in the same view is a must for me as I drive like 45k miles a year)
FWIW the Tab S 8.4" perks were IR blaster, very stable multi view, email client, AMOLED screen obviously, ridiculously thin and light. Downers were AMOLED's degrade over time, not the fastest thing out there, Google maps and Waze lag always.. not bad lag but just it's never smooth. AMOLED screen was the main deal breaker, I plan to keep this for 2-3 years. I just now upgraded from an original TF101

After using a Galaxy S2 abusively for two years, I still have no idea where the thing that AMOLEDs degrade over time comes from. It still looks embarrassingly good, especially in a dark room, even now.
If the Nexus 9 experience is anything like the Nexus 7, we aren't missing much. Except an extra preloaded app or four (Fitness, Docs, Sheets, Slides) to add to the growing repertoire of Apps So Good That Users Can't Be Trusted To Install Themselves on Nexus devices.
Despite the Shield's obviously inferior screen compared to the Tab S, I gotta say NVIDIA still made it look really good. Light leakage is only obvious when starting apps or the tablet with a black screen.

I still maintain that the Shield is the best tablet you can buy right now. I've had zero issues with mine, except occasional lag on Lollipop after heavy usage, and this is remedied (for me, at least) by opening recent apps and clearing out the ones I'm not using. I imagine it'll be fixed in due time, as Nvidia has been fantastic with updates (my girlfriend's Nexus 7 LTE is still on 4.4, for what it's worth...). I do have hairline cracks at three of four corners, but I'm not so petty as to let some heat expansions lead me to conclude it's not a fantastic tablet; the blemishes have no impact on performance, and a responsive interface is what was important to me.
As for the Nexus 9, I was worried that I was too impatient when I got the Shield as I knew the new Nexus was coming out soon, but after reading the reviews (most are underwhelming), I don't have any regrets. I also wanted a form factor that could fit in my back pocket (as does the Shield, even with the cover), and the Nexus couldn't.
As a slight disclaimer, the stylus was a major selling point for me--I use my tablet in meetings for taking notes, and don't want a bulky keyboard attachment. I'm also not a gamer, though I have spent far longer than I expected to using Nvidia's GRID service. If you don't care about the stylus (or would prefer the Nexus 9's keyboard folio), or you don't want to play games at all (warning: that was my stance before having this tablet), the Nexus 9 is probably an equally viable choice.

I wouldn't touch the N9 if you gave me one. Google gimped the drivers and removed desktop OpenGl, which completely nerfs the tablet's gaming and emulation capabilities. Plus the build issues like light bleed and the 32Gb cap with no sd card. While the K1 in the N9 is a bit faster on paper, the absence of desktop openGl completely counteracts that. Unless you are using your N9 purely for web browsing and productivity apps I see absolutely no reason to spend an extra $100
