[Q] Transformer Infinity, Note 10.1, or Nexus 10?

New to the forums, looking to by my first tablet. Not really interested in the ipad 3. I want a tablet which will be good for watching videos and playing a bit of games, also want a good web browser. Which tablet will be ideal out of these 3? My budget is $500, so the price factor doesnt really matter. Neither the s pen or the keyboard dock appeal to me. Thanks!

The Infinity would be the worst drain of money you could even consider. For its price, the hardware is underpowered - typing on it right now, Browser (stock, not Chrome - it's too slow to run Chrome smoothly) force closed (this is TF700 hate-post V2) and the keyboard froze for a good 10 sec when I got back in. Build quality and the like is down to chance, but even if you get a well-built one, the I/O sucks, Tegra 3 can't push 1080p without crying to its mother and to be honest, Asus' software updates are unreliable. The alarm clock's still broken from the one before last.
The Nexus 10, on the other hand, has the most powerful processor in any mobile device right now, and it is well-equipped to power the much, much higher resolution it has to offer. You can pretty much guarantee that it will provide you with the best Android has to offer on tablets both now and for a long time into the future. The Infinity is already obsolete.
Also, the Note's only real draw is the S Pen, though for some that is pretty significant (it's like a Wacom tablet computer). So if that isn't what you're after, save yourself some money and grab the Nexus 10.

The NEXUS hands down, 100%. It is the fastest Tab on the earth with the best screen of all. If only I did not buy a N7.
If I was looking to buy a 10in tab, then I would go for the nexus 10.

I'm still within my return period at Best Buy -- and will be bringing my Infinity and dock back, and getting a Nexus 10. Build quality for mine is fine -- actually very solid, nice form factor, superb battery and nice display. But it IS a bit laggy, and between ASUS and NVidia, there's way too much in the way of arcane routines to go through in order to unlock, root and safely flash it. Nexus 10 promises to be a much better experience in this respect. I'll be getting the 32GB N10.

If the Nexus 10 had 3G then I don't think I would hesitate to chose it, I have a nexus 7 and I'm thinking about giving it to my wife and getting a new Nexus 7 32GB+3G version, from the look of how the nexus 7 is going, I may just wait for the Nexus 10 in a few months when they bring out the 64GB+3G nexus 10 (although 32GB is probably more likely, I may just hold out for the 3G version)

to your question, easy choice. nexus 10, of course. Im using a Note 10.1 and it sucks really bad.

Nexii have classically been rom magnets, though there is always the danger that they've finally released enough to dilute this effect. Also important is the number of users, which is also correlated to the number of roms. The 10 inch android tablet is not proven (but this is probably its best chance).

CleanRom on the Infinity is an Asus ROM, trimmed lovingly. It's still a manufacturer ROM, though, and I would bet you 2 Nexus 10's that the Asus UI never makes it to the n10.
I returned my infinity for the reasons in post 2. I'm not bitter, I just think my $500 is better spent elsewhere when my phone is better than my tablet...

Sorry for my horrible knowledge on the devices lol im new to all this, after all, I'm coming from an apple product. Will there still be a way to obtain flash on the n10?

It's not worth spending your money on TF700T because it lags crazy! I'm finally Unlocked (Clean rom 2.3) But what's the point? I just voided my warranty for a device that can't run smoothly without a Custom Rom. Get a device that actually runs smoothly without any type of tweaking.
My Infinity works great but It's not the same feeling like i had before i unlocked it (Fear of Bricking). I might even buy N10, Hopefully i don't get same experience i had on infinity.
Since that is cleared up, I would say Nexus 10 seems like a better deal in Hardware but If you want features like S-Pen and what not then Note is great. But at end of the day, you will be frustrated with slow OS than not having the features (S-Pen, Multiscreen)
Wait till there are couple of reviews for Nexus 10, I will not buy anything else until i see a video for it.

yea, if I were you I would avoid the TF700, especially if you don't want/need a keyboard dock.
It has a nice deisgn, and a great screen, but it is laggy as crap and I haven't rooted mine so the overall experience sucks.
On paper it's almost the perfect tablet. Unfortunately Asus really dropped the ball on this one.
I'm probably getting the Nexus 10. Then selling it if Asus makes a really nice Transformer replacement at CES. Or I'm switching to Windows 8. I have no idea what I want to do.

People , I was checking the App store , and found a good number of Apps supported for the tablet , Apple may boast a 275000 app selection , but many of them are just show off (like the brain explorer , titanic time) and so forth , they look good for a couple of weeks , until their charm fades away
The main ones are content comsumption apps , and the market has a handful of them (CNN , cnbc , even TV streams) Google docs on google drive is a charm to use.
PLus I wont be bogged down by itunes all the time ,
Nexus 10 is a definate buy if u r not in the apple ecosystem

Mm. One of my key reasons for not buying anything Apple is to use one to its fullest, you need the whole iRange, and Mac has the disadvantage vs Windows when it comes to ecosystem (especially games) so I don't really want to.

Buy a wicked Windows PC/laptop for 1/3 the price of a mac with comparable hardware

To those who are saying the Note 10.1 and the Transformer Infinity are ****ty tablets, how could you possibly think that? Have you never used a Coby tablet running GB?
To answer the OPs question, don't buy a tablet at all. Tablets are transitional technology, they won't be around forever and the ones that are brand new depreciate in six months and become totally outdated in a year. Even if tablets weren't a completely pointless waste of money, even if you could find some productive use for it that would make it practical for you to own one, no matter what tablet you buy it will be totally outdated in a year. So I say spend your money on something else.

After having all three, I'm holding on to my Nexus 10. The my experience with the ASUS TF700 was frustrating, and after multiple returns for a variety of issues I got a "good" one. Stock it's a frustrating experience, and making the necessary modifications voids your warranty.
The Note was a great tablet, although I'm not a fan of TouchWiz it wasn't so bad. It stomped the TF700 in web browsing too. The S-Pen was a novelty for me though, so I figured I'd save some money.
The Nexus is a beast, no regrets.

For your requirements, watching movies and playing games, I'd recommend:
1) Galaxy Note 10.1
The CPU/GPU and resolution are balanced right and all games are fast. Screen on battery life is consistently ~8 hours. Benefit is it's not just a consumption device but also creativity and productivity with pen for drawing, paperless note taking, etc. Price was dropped to $499 for 32GB version to compete with Nexus 10.
2) Nexus 10
Has potential but games need to be optimized for it and the ridiculously high resolution. Battery life, sound quality and screen quality are behind Galaxy Note 10.1. It's a brand new device so there are minor issues that need to be addressed with the upcoming OS updates.
Skip the Tegra3 Infinity. When looking at Google Play comments for games I always see people reporting performance and games not working on TF201/300/700 devices while it's fine on other devices. I had the Nexus 7 and some games like Nova 3, etc. are laggy while fine on the other devices.
Another option unless you're anxious to get something now is to wait closer to Christmas and hope for new devices to appear. A Galaxy Note 12" 1080p with 4-core Exynos 5450, 4GB DRAM, etc. would be ideal.

I get irrationally excited about each new Nexus device, and as such I pre-ordered the N9 as soon as I was able to (32GB version).
Today, I decided that the device is not worth the $500+ cost (including tax and shipping for the 32GB model). I already have a N7 (2013, 32GB), and N10 (16GB), and both still work great for my needs. All I really do is web-browsing and watch movies/TV (Hulu Plus, NetFlix, Google Play Movies) on my tablets, so what is this new device going to offer me in terms of real-world performance? I am a bit of a spec-whore, but the new N9 only has 2GB of RAM and a non-interesting PPI, so I don't feel like the N9 gives any bragging rights.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the N9 will be great, but for my needs, this will be the first Nexus device not making its way into my mailbox.
The N6, on the other hand, will definitely be replacing my N5!

Interesting, why did you decide that the Nexus 6 was a worthy upgrade while the Nexus 9 was not? I certainly understand thinking that neither is worth the upgrade, but the Nexus 9 looks to be a much bigger bump over the Nexus 7 than the Nexus 6 vs the 5. The 9's SoC is much more powerful than the 7's, while the 6 is more of a modest upgrade to the 5.

Nexus 9 is not a successor of the N7, it is from the N10

I agree with this, but I was shocked at the nexus 6 price! No way I can afford that for a while, that's for sure! 4 kids near Xmas lol. I am interested to see the specs and price of the oneplus two! This company has a bright future, Thay just have to lose the frustrating invitation only system.

For my smartphone, the increased screen size of the N6 is useful for things like GPS, watching movies, and reading. I already watch a pretty large amount of video content on my phone, so a bigger screen will improve the experience.
Also, the N6 just looks so pretty

My Nexus 7's touch screen decided to stop working on the hardware side after a year (it took a hard fall while moving this summer but it was in a case) and I couldn't RMA it because the warrantee expired. I decided that the Nexus 9 was worth it for me because of the k1 Denver which is a huge upgrade over the N7 (2013) processor. The 2gb of RAM isn't ideal, however its still more than enough for me to play some games and use it for various things. I am also excited about the larger size, I had a LG G Pad 8.3 until it got water damaged and I miss the larger tablet experience. This summer was full of bad luck with devices for me so I am eager to start fresh with s great new tablet. I considered the Tab S for a while but I couldn't get over that terrible home button and capacitive keys on it. I know everyone is different and the price is high for a nexus but it's still cheaper than a pos ipad.

Try androidcentral for example. So I decided to swap it out.
I tried a Galaxy Tab S 8.4 which has an incredible screen and is quite good overall, but that god awful touchwiz with it's stupid small lags drove me nuts - so I sold it as well.
What remains is Nexus 9 I suppose.

I just can't accept a 32GB device. Not now. Not after I've had several devices now with 64GB of storage. My first Android tablet, 3 years ago...32GB plus a 32GB card.

I'll swap the N10 for the N9 and keep the N5 and it's a pretty easy decision for me.

Really like the sound of the Motorola droid turbo, monster of a phone! Also has a very large battery almost 4000mah

I pre-ordered an lte one from Best Buy and have similar thoughts Maybe the nvidia shield, but, decided to go through with it, and yes I feel its expensive. But had $25 in reward dollars and can pay it off over a year.
I do need a tablet with built in lte do to the fact we do a lot of short trips with medicore wifi, or the hotel charging for medicore wifi. Yes I can wifi tether but it burns the battery down on the phone, and being away, use that as well. Still have about a month to thnk about it, and if I change my mind, can just not open up the packaging and bring it the local BestBuy for a refund.

Depends on needs I suppose. It's no secret the N9 is targeting more productivity-oriented people. If I were primarily a multimedia/games consumer, I wouldn't be terribly interested in the N9.
For me though, I'm a student, and when I'm not doing student stuff, I'm generally doing emails, vid chat, web browsing, maybe a casual game occasionally like poker or something, so the N9 16GB is actually all I need. To be honest the only time I ever feel space constraints is when it comes to loading up a bunch of apps (which I'll never use) or putting HD movies on the device.
Plus, the availability of 64GB otg usb sticks for 40 or so bucks make that a non-issue really.
As for phones, I see no incentives to go from the N5 to the n6. Technically the N5 is still a better phone than most people are using, not to say that from an elitist sense, but the fact that as far as tech specs go, apps and everything else, it's got what most people need (or don't need considering the recent NFC shutoff debacle at walmart and other major retailers)... Especially considering I'm the type of person who will be carrying my N9 just about everywhere. I'm not going toward this "I'll read and browse on my phablet" trend. 6" is too small to enjoy doing tablet stuff, and it's too big to be a comfortable phone, in the pocket and in the hand.

It's kinda hard to hear someone say that the N9 is too expensive and then decide to go for the much more expensive N6 instead.

I agree that not everyone needs a ton of storage, but there's NO excuse for them to not even give us the option. OTG sticks out, can get broken off, and uses power. So no, it's not a non-issue.

I can certainly understand the confusion, other than the fact that I didn't say the N9 is too expensive. What I said is that the cost of the device is not worth it FOR ME, given the devices I already have and the usage requirements for said devices. N9 will no doubt be a great device, and if I were buying a new tablet today, it would be the first (and only) one on my list.

Well, if it didnt have knox I would have just gotten rid of the damn touchwiz. But then you'd have warranty problems in case the tablet decides to die someday.

Torn between this and Nexus 9

As the title says I can't decide!
I currently have an Asus TF300T and was thinking of upgrading but I've gone and cracked the screen and it's no longer responding so I definitely have to upgrade now.
I was thinking of the nexus 9, it's new and supposedly fast but then I came across the nvidia shield tablet and now I can't make up my mind.
I am a casual to moderate PC gamer and have a GTX770 in my rig, and the thought of being able to stream my pc games to the shield really interests me, especially if I can put it in console mode and play the games on my living room TV with the nvidia controller, which would be great for those moments where the girlfriend complains I spend too much time in my man cave [emoji12]
Reading through the forums there seem to be plenty of posts with problems (granted people don't usually have something to say unless they are complaining), but I'm not to sure whether to take the plunge?
I may just order one and see how it works out, if I don't like it or have any issues I guess I can always send it back and order a nexus 9.
What do you guys think?
I may also unlock it and install custom firmware if there are any available as I always do with any android device [emoji4]

I was in the same boat as you. After much thought and deliberation over many factors I ended up going with the 32GB Shield and I LOVE it.
I have owned/used a couple dozen android devices over many years and none of them are even close in regards to the speed and sheer lag free smoothness of the Shield.
In the real world I don't think that there will be much of a performance difference between the N9 and the shield. I do think that the shield may be able to run under a heavy load longer without throttling itself. I've run the most demanding games on the platform and it barely gets warm. There are a lot of reports about how the Nexus 9 gets extremely hot in an isolated spot near the camera which is of some concern (maybe software updates will alleviate this somewhat, but hard to say).
If you just can't live without a 4:3 aspect ratio, get the Nexus. Otherwise I think the shield is an outstanding device. Keep in mind that the 32GB/LTE Nexus 9 is $599 while the equivalent Shield is $399.

I was looking at the 32GB shield, for the price it's definitely better value than the N9.
How do you find the screen size? I'm a little worried about finding 8 inches a little small after coming from a 10 incher! Lol
Is it really super smooth and lag free? If so I'm definitely going to get one, most android devices I've used have always had a little lag, but that's because I could never afford the top of the range ones.

Although I am no artist or something, I wouln't buy any device anymore that has no stylus. Is so much easier to select text, links, play Nintendo DS emulators. And besides, using the stylus keeps the display nice and clean. I love it.

I'm torn as well, the only reason I haven't gone with the Sheild yet over the Nexus is due to the smaller screen size. I'm buying a tablet for school productivity and for entertainment, the Nexus's screen size seems ideal for both. If the Sheild was bigger without being that much heavier, I would have gone with it without any hesitation.

I'm coming from a Nexus 7 to the shield so the 1 inch difference in size feels significant to me. I came to the decision for myself that the N9 was just a touch too large/wide for holding it comfortably for extended periods.
I feel that the 16:10/1920x1200/8 inch screen is pretty much ideal for a device I carry every day.
If I had bought the N9 I think I'd be likely to leave it home more frequently as it really is quite a bit bulkier.
I like both devices but I don't regret my choice in any manner.

It is BY FAR the smoothest running android device I've ever owned. My daughter has an iPad mini retina and the Shield is every bit as silky smooth as her iPad. Not exaggerating in the slightest...

So I was in a similar boat. I was hyped for the N9 as the rumors of it's specs were tossed about and I was fully in when it was rumored to depart from Nexus standard and include a MicroSD slot. I did consider the Shield as it was getting released and hung around these forums reading about how folks had various issues but it also seemed that Nvidia really stepped up and supported their product well which I was impressed with. Storage was the huge issue for me and Nexus really dropped the ball with only 32GB and no MicroSD.
I too came from the TF300T although I didn't worry about the transition on size. I've been telling women for years that 10 inches is highly overrated and 8 is much better. It (the tablet) is light weight, more comfortable to use and the screen size is amazing.
Also if you do your homework you'll likely find some folks ditching theirs on Craiglist or eBay to by new iPads and N9's and they are usually willing to part with them cheap. I bought an RMA replacement unit from a guy on CL and have been thrilled with it.

I was thinking of the nexus 9, it's new and supposedly fast but then I came across the nvidia shield tablet and now I can't make up my mind.
I am a casual to moderate PC gamer and have a GTX770 in my rig, and the thought of being able to stream my pc games to the shield really interests me, especially if I can put it in console mode and play the games on my living room TV with the nvidia controller, which would be great for those moments where the girlfriend complains I spend too much time in my man cave [emoji12]
Reading through the forums there seem to be plenty of posts with problems (granted people don't usually have something to say unless they are complaining), but I'm not to sure whether to take the plunge?
I may just order one and see how it works out, if I don't like it or have any issues I guess I can always send it back and order a nexus 9.
What do you guys think?
I may also unlock it and install custom firmware if there are any available as I always do with any android device [emoji4]

I'd highly suggest buying the Shield Tablet LTE over the Nexus 9. You must realize that high graphics games can take up to 5GB of space each and thus 32GB with no expandability isn't a viable if you want to actually use the tablet to the fullest. You will be out of space in no time just installing around ten games. The Nexus 9 is far more expensive in any case, so the Shield is a much better buy.
Also take in mind that Nvidia Hub game streaming should not be the deciding factor for purchasing the Shield as Limelight brings that functionality to most devices. I've used it on my TF701.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm definitely leaning towards the shield as I think it may be better all around for me.
I don't really like the ipad look of the N9, and I think the shield would be a perfect size for me. In all honesty I sometimes found my 10 inch TF300T a little too big at times and also difficult to hold, 8 inches would be much more comfortable ? lol
I also like the fact that the shield comes with a stylus, I'm no artist myself but I actually used to be one of sorts and it's something I've slowly been getting back into, I have a wacom graphics tablet plugged into my PC, so the stylus may actually be another good selling point for me.
I'm also used to having an SD card so I don't think I could do with out one.
Gaming would be an awesome addition especially with the control pad. I was just looking at the limelight app too but unfortunately I can't test it out as my TF300T is now dead, so I have no choice but to get a new device.
I've added the shield and the GamePad to my shopping basket... but I'm away from home at the moment on holiday so I'm going to have to wait until I get a back home to actually buy lol!

I came from a TF300T to a Nexus 7 2013. I can say with all confidence that I didn't miss the extra three inches, basically because the TF300T is 720p and the Nexus 7 2013 is 1080p.
Its the resolution, not the size, that matters.
Now I have the NST LTE 32GB, I can say the extra inch *does* matter. 8" is the new 7" in my opinion. Perfect for the hand still, and I can even put in in my Levi Jeans pocket (though it sticks out a bit) for temporary hands-free transport.
64bit is great and all, but until app developers start making games compatible with the architecture, you're better off getting the NST. So much cheaper, an awesome Wi-Fi direct controller supported natively, nice standard inclusions in the ROM like native screen recording and twitching.

I currently have the Nexus 9 but it has to many quirks... I ordered a shield instead hopefully i nwill be much better, the reviews seem great on it :good:

I'd be interested to hear too as a currently dissatisfied Nexus 9 owner.

I can not speak for the shield as I have not had a chance to try one out yet, although I seriously considering getting one, but having played with a Nexus 9 for about a half hour the impression I was left with is that it is not worth the money. I really feel like it is a big swing and miss. I don't like the dimensions, the 64 bit chip appears to be an app compatibility issue, no expandable storage, etc. For a tablet that runs $399 for a wifi 16gb it does not feel that well put together. I don't know maybe my mind would change with longer use but after using it I felt not only would I not buy it for $399 I probably would not be that tempted to buy it at $299

Okay so I got my shield and as of right now I have decided against doing a video comparision for now, there doesnt seem to be enough interest. However I'm willing to post any kind of picture or answer any questions. So far on the shield there doesn't seem to any hardware quirks the Nexus has, its a solid feeling device. The ONLY very minor nit pick I have so far is when tap the back there is a little bit of give so it makes a bit of a clack sound, but it doesnt bother me at all. Theres no light bleed which is super nice. Its so much more comfortable to hold than the Nexus 9, the texture on the back of the device is very pleasing and very grippy(if thats even a word) the Nexus 9 doesnt feel nearly as nice to hold. I cant say too much about long term battery life but thus far its awesome, but cant comment on how it compares to the Nexus. I love the pen its very sensitive, but it doesnt have pressure sensitivity which is no biggy for me. Anyway, thats all I can think of off the top of my head, ask away!

This so much better than lackluster overpriced N9.
Also google does next to nothing to optimise or take advantage of their hardware. Nvidia on the other hand does.

I've always had Nexus items.. First gen Nexus tablet, second, 3rd.. hell I have a nexus Q
So with this new issue I've run the gamut of Nexus 9 issues. Frisbee backplate, speed that, so you have a reference understandable to the human mind, ill describe as glacial. Charge to 100% eta. 2017. I got stuck on android 5.0.0 because.. who the hell knows. And now randomly my tablet has what I can only describe as seizures. HTC wants me to RMA it.. but you know what, I do not want to RMA it because then I'd be given another one and I would rather have the current one blow up in my face then to subject myself to the false hope of receiving a replacement and assuming, nay believing that all is well.
This is twice Nvidia has been contracted to put a processor in a Nexus and this is the second time the result has been total complete garbage. The entire Nexus9 experience has gotten me closer than I have ever been to buying an Ipad.. Google's and to an extent all Android tablet makers ability to get a tablet produced that even comes close to an Ipad in its ability to run the same way every day has been weighed and measured and found wanting.
The phones, which by all accounts are still their main focus have not suffered like the tablets so I will continue to enjoy them.
They seem to be unable to produce a table that is consistent or compelling and are thus going through the motions and just making a tablet because they have to.. So the Ipad decision is because quite frankly Apple does "going through the motions" better than Samsung/Google/HTC apparently can.
Maybe this will all change.. maybe it will not. At some point I will make the change these manufacturers will not. One thing I will not do is be suckered into a new tablet every 12 months.

I'm not happy with my Nexus 9 either. It's lacking in both hardware and software.
Hardware:
- backlight bleeding
- too heavy
- flex in the back cover
- battery life is not that great
Software:
- random reboots / crashes
- RAM bug (causing chrome tab reloads for example)
- slow performance occasionally (probably caused by the RAM bug)
- software updates were rather slow for a Nexus device, we had to wait months for 5.1.1
I don't have any hope that Android M will fix any of the software problems. The Nexus 9 has been out for almost a year and there hasn't really been much improvement since the release.
I would like to buy an iPad mini 4 (never owned an iPhone or iPad, but I think there are no good Android tablets out there), the problem is that the Nexus 9 has a bad resell value (<250€) and the iPad mini 4 costs 389€ and I really don't feel like spending that much on a tablet again considering that I haven't even had the Nexus 9 for a year.

I jumped on the bandwagon and bought the 32gb N9 from Google Play in December. After a month of use I felt it was an "okay" tablet. Last month I inherited an iPad Air 1st gen. The iPad gives a much more gratifying user experience.
I feel that Google really blew it with the N9, rushing to get a tablet out and winding up with a rush product at a premium price. I will be much more reluctant to go with another Google product in the future.

I don't know but I actually love my tablet... The biggest gripe I have with it is the tabs in Chrome refreshing, but besides that the tablet works great... There is a small light bleed but nothing as bad as my G3... Sorry to hear you guys had a bad batch, but what might have helped my tablet experience is that I rooted mine and running dirty unicorn...

Same here. And my N9 is bone stock.

hardware is fine, but the drivers running it are crap. stutters, background task getting killed, refresh on tabs when browsing, touching the screen ramps up the processors (it's why the browser uses more power than the screen, each touch takes a crap-ton of power. a few updates back fixed it to 1/2 but still is too much. lowering it to 800 and it stutters, my other tablets only ramp up to 300 with no stutter)... as crappy as samsung is with support i'd have gotten a better tablet sticking with them. i've tried four different roms with the same results and was on stock/rooted for the longest with fire-ice kernel.

I assume you've done a full wipe and ruled out it being a software bug?
If the company is offering to RMA a defective unit in favor of a non-defective one and you turn them down how is that Nexus/HTC/Android/whomever's fault other than your own?
Other than the backlight bleed I don't have too many issues with my Nexus. And that was purchasing a refurb scratch/dent 32gb model from Amazon Warehouse for $290. Is it what I'd expect for a $290 tablet? Absolutely.
I'd consider an iPad Air 2, but those guys are $600 and won't sync up quite the same as all my other crap. Or alternatively the Mini 4 ($500).

Mine is on Preview M unencrypted. I really like it. My 10 is a fine tablet, as well. The 7's I've had I've never really liked.
The apple tablets I've tried seem no different to me. I've even changed my Window animation scale 1, Transition animation scale 1 and Animator duration scale 1.5 and it acts just like an apple tablet.

The freeze on OP's video is caused by an undervolt-powersave thing. It has been reported many times and only an RMA can save you from that.
The RAM deficiency is caused by the one and only Chrome that consumes a ****load of ram on any platform. It fills my G3's 3 GBs of ram in just 5 tabs.
Just use another browser.

ive got a sluggish n9, backlight bleed and a few reboots. battery life is weak...
love aspect ratio though and still think this is still a good tablet overall...

There is no way anyone that is happy with this tablet uses multiple profiles on a regular basis.
If you fresh boot and sign into one user things are ok... not horrible or super fast but ok. Sign in to an additional profile and the tablet goes to complete hell. Stutters, stalls, crashes, etc.
Really sucks because its shared between myself and my girlfriend. This has been the case since 5.0.1 through 6.0 preview 3.

People are never happy with what they have. Yes the tablet has a few issue here and there. Very little consumer grade electronics are "perfect" there will always be something that bugs you.
I like this tab, took a little tweaking, as it usually does with any device to reach the standards of a "current XDA'r".
But at the very LEAST i would disagree with this being a tab to avoid.

His post is misleading and mine is not pessimism when its reality. Everyone knows this tablet has issues worse than typical bugs or hardware annoyances.
Edit: I just finished flashing 6.0. I can't believe I am saying this but it looks like google has finally fixed most of the performance issues. I can finally load up multiple profiles/chrome browsing and it doesn't start hanging/crashing. 1 year later and they finally got it right. Too bad it still heats up when gaming but that's not as big of a deal.

I love mine personally, there is a tiny hint of backlight bleeding but it's hardly noticeable. Battery life isn't that great, but that's the only downside for me. It always gets me through 2 days of use anyway since I have a phone for other functions. I also would gladly take a slight issue or two for the vastly superior sound setup for media consumption. Apple could maybe get my buck if they integrated FF speakers, and good ones at that. Until then the Nexus is the best for me. I was also thinking about the Asus 8.0 too, it looks good but it's too damned small. I actually think my Nexus is a bit small too, but it's the biggest and best tab I could get for under $300

I've had all sorts of issues with my Nexus 9. Software is better now than it used to be. But up until 5.1.1, multitasking made me want to kill kittens. It's more usable now with the latest 5.1.1 revision on the Pure Nexus ROM and Fire kernel. Except for Chrome, even XDA makes it choke. HD video performance is hit or miss, MX player with Tegra plug-ins was OK and other media apps stutter with high bit rates. I'm not on M now but when I tried it the battery life improved so there is that to look forward to.
The screen bleed on the bottom has gotten worse.
I learned my lesson and won't buy Nexus products again till they are on the market for a while and are thoroughly reviewed/patched.

Stock feels a little clunky on the Nexus 9. Installed CM and it feels much smoother. Overall, I am fairly pleased with mine.
Then again, I do not use Chrome, rather I use Firefox with Adblock+.

I have has both gen 7, and now the 9. I have also had iPads' and a Sony Tablet.
The 1st gen 7 was my favorite. Its form factor felt the best in my hand, the 2nd while faster was uncomfortable to hold. I'm not an Apple fan but work gave me an iPad 2. I rarely used it. Seemed okay. The Sony Z3 Tablet Compact has AMAZING quality. I just wish I could put AOSP on it, not a fan of the Sony tweaks, but over all its made from great materials and its very smooth to operate.
The 9 for me has been great so far. I did the following as soon as I got it, these are things I generally do to EVERY Android device when I get it.
* Change DPI to the screens native DPI (288 in this case)
* Added a line in build.prop to enable hardware UI rendering. <-- not sure if this is really needed anymore so I continue to add it until I'm told its not.
* Hard code the DNS used to the Google DNS servers
* Set all animation scales to .5
* Force GPU rendering to ON
I have never had any crashing or RAM management issues. I DO have the light bleeding issue, but not bad enough to really complain about.

So, while i realize things are pretty quiet here, i figured i would give a friendly hello to the community. While shopping around yesterday, i ran across a 9 (black, 16GB) tucked away in a store (used of course). Despite knowing the reputation of the tablet, i figured what the heck; everything looks good on it (buttons are firm, no major bleed, screen is sharp), and its only $80.. why not. As it was, i was looking for something better (and more supported) than my Asus Z580CA (gotta love x86 chips in Android tablets.. ugh). I had been mulling over a K1 Shield, but the prices are just too high, and the Pixel C even more so.... so the price point here satisfies my larger tab desires.
Truth be told, after unlocking, and putting LOS (and FED) on, the tablet is actually really fast; and i will dare say noticeably so compared to my Asus (with double the memory and cores). No denying the Asus is lighter and thinner, but at the cost of usability and battery life (no room for a battery, really); i actually like the firmer bulk of this guy.
Anyway, i realize there may not be many out there to read this, but either way... one more reporting in for the ranks!

I'm still around too. I used it for 6-8 months when it came out then my son used it for about 2 years with only minor issues. Towards the end of his use we started seeing the fast battery drain issue. When I went to re-root it I found the USB port would work with ADB anymore. So after much diagnosis I decided to suck it up and spend $10 on a replacement daughter board from Ebay. Works like a charm now. Funny thing is I really wanted to root it to find the battery drain source but since swapping out the USB daughter board, rooting I haven't seen the issue anymore. It may have been a bad port all along. I did however install Flar's kernel which may also have helped?
TL/DR - Still a good tablet. My 2 cents.

I have a bunch of tablets, including a Shield K1. Just got the Nexus 9 a month ago or so. I've always wanted to own one because of its unique CPU. It is pretty fast indeed with one of the custom OSs here.
It certainly gets warm though if the CPU doesn't get its idle time. Pretty easy to get it to throttle back the clock speed due to heat there. Still, the Denver CPU was a speed demon in 2014. Pretty nice for web browsing! I'm going to guess that NVidia didn't use the Denver K1 in the Shield Tablet because of the power consumption of these big CPU cores. Not a good idea in a smaller gaming-oriented tablet. I feel it's similar to if Intel tried to put a Core M in a small tablet. Beefy CPU and GPU that aren't exactly super low power.

Picked up the nexus 9 and like some of the feel, etc pretty responsive as well. Not loving battery life however. Any recommended rom/kernel/settings for good battery life? Use it mostly for a few games but getting like 4 hours right now...

Well, being late in nexus 9 party, means you have saved some money. Nexus 9 runs much better with nougat.

I mainly use it for playing movies. I watch downloaded movies from a USB stick and I get several hours of screen on time. I usually do about 3-4 hours of driving for work, and watch movies along the way (I know, horrible idea safety-wise) and I usually have 35-40% battery life left.

I'm thinking about getting the Nexus 9. if i would have saw one for 80 bucks, I would have gotten it too with out thinking.
I'm also glad to see that many on here are still using this device and have some great input.
I was about to get one off of swappa, but looking around to find the best price. I actually need one by end of next week.
I use it for movies of cource, but taking notes and sometimes document work. So I will be also looking for the best keyboard too.

I might be getting one for about $200 CAD, used but looks to be in good condition. My other option is waiting and saving a bit for a Pixel C, but those are really hard to find and about $300 more. What sort of SOT do people get on LOS?

Mine should be delivered tomorrow will by up all night Rooting and Roming. I will compare my SOT with the iPad mini I'm getting rid of.

Yep, me too. Glad to see happy users, I have always wanted one and with the Pixel C prices being soooo much higher and the 'no root' options for the ASUS ZenPad 3S 10 I figured I'd grab a 'Like New' used model off Amazon for $200 with the 30 day option to return. But I love Nexus so much probably will just keep it no matter what (unless it has some of the 'issues').

Just got it today and haven't rooted a device for a few years now, but it's like riding a bike haha. Brings back great memories of the first device I ever rooted which was my HTC EVO.

I love this tablet, 32 GB with LTE, way better that the ipad Mini LTE i was using. Plus I dont have to worry about apps being deprecated for my system version.
I use it mainly for content sling TV, netflix, youtube and some of my own movies.
I rooted it and i'm using the lineage OS rom and it is great.
trying to catch up on my superhero movies, I watched CA winter solder and CA civil war. on one charge with plenty of battery left.
looking forward to doing more with this tablet
does anyone have a recommendation for a keyboard case to use. I used the ipad mini to take notes at meetings and would like to do this with a good keyboard

i was thinking of trying to get a shield tablet but it looks like you cant find them anywhere but after seeing prices of the N9 on swappa, seriously thinking about picking one up. My TN7 battery only lasts like an hour and turns into a nuclear furnace when I turn it on. just rooted my moms trustee old N7 which she has kept in mint condition. I am excited about the chance to pick one of these up for about $150 just to play around with them and check out the capabilities. You can't beat the bang for the buck from what I see.

Hello everyone, i am also thinking to buy one, just curious that Nexus 9 will get oreo Rom or not. I already searched the forum but no words about oreo.

There are a couple of experimental Oreo roms. The only problem is hardware acceleration for video doesn't work.
