I've read several just released articles about samsung producing a 5.9 inch 4k screen for it.
http://www.technobuffalo.com/2014/11/06/galaxy-note-5-might-sport-ultra-hd-4k-display/
My understanding over the years is that on screens this size you would really not be able to tell the difference between the two anyway.
So any experts out there can you provide insight.
Will it be noticeable on phone screens at the level we are now.....
Although the prospect of it is fun to talk about, I'm too in love with my note 4 to think about that right now. I wouldn't doubt samsung will not want to be out done in their own space but unless they can squeeze 5.9 inch screen into this same form factor and achieve the same battery, no thanks imo.

I agree, I think everyone will say you can't tell the difference, nobody wants that. But if they pull it off with good battery life and decent form factor, everyone will want it, even if they can't tell the difference (ie 720P -> 1080P -> 2160P).
Yea. 5.9 is too much. 5.7 is extreme borderline. That's one reason I have no interest in the Nexus 6. It's too big, and it's only big for the sake of being big. Doesn't offer any extra functionality with its size like the note does
They should have released the note 4 with a 6" screen. Same size or a tad bigger would have been perfect.
I read somewhere that the naked eye doesn't even see a difference between 1080p and 4K until you have a screen size of 50 inches. That said, on a Smartphone, it'd be pointless. Then again, I did see this page that has a chart that contains the distance from your monitor vs the size of your monitor, and shows a line where you'd see a difference. Not sure how accurate this is. The chart only goes down to 2 ft (viewing distance) and a 20 inch monitor. Most of us may be looking at are phones from about 1 ft away, roughly. That said, I can't imagine 4k actually making a difference, on screen. Now, if the phone were to get docked and the content was viewed on a TV, that'd obviously be a different story.

I don't mind big screens. I saw 2 weeks ago about a phone the Hisense X1 (I think that's the name) but it is supposed to be here in the next few weeks they say. It's an overs seas right now but it's got a freaking 6.8 inch 1080 screen and the usual specs.
The damn thing comes with a remote control for it which I've never heard of.
That might be much but for me my ideal would be 6.
I don't talk that much and I mainly use my 4 for writing and as a computer.

Agreed. If this baby was 6 inches I would consider it the perfect phone. Aside from Lockzilla and their pita control

I as well have been told by TV experts that unless your TV is 50 inches or bigger you wouldn't tell if it was 720 or 1080.
I just was not sure if the principle applied to phones as well.
I will say I had to operate on my wife's S4 last night and it made me love this screen even more.

Yeah I know that they will continue screen wars always until it's 20k. I was just wondering on these phone screens if it would make a noticeable difference or basically be a marketing point
Short of 64 bit architecture what would actually be changed for the N5?

the science says your eyes won't tell the difference,
but your OCD tells you that you will, it tells me that too. but it's best to ignore it.
Rumor has it the Note 6 will be out after the Note 5.
I can easily tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on my 40" tv at any distance from 2in to 15ft, I have an S5 and can definitely tell the difference between that and my old Droid Razr HD when holding it between 4 in from my nose and full arms length (approx 2'), I have both and use both every day, the HD although 720p is one of the sharpest cell phone screens I have ever seen, but the S5 is so much better, I can still see the pixels (when extremely close) on the Razr HD, but not at all on the S5. I am not interested in 4k at all, 2k would be nice I think, but not the right format for the display dimensions of the standard phone shape.
That said, I eagerly await the opportunity to order a Note 4 DE, the only thing that would change my mind on that is if Samsung announces a 2015 12.2" note pro model with reasonably decent specs (the last one was spec'd too low).
IMO

Just my two cents...I personally can tell a huge difference between the 1080p S5 and the QuadHD display of the LG G3. And I'm a Samsung guy. Anyways, I'm back on the 900T. So much snappier and reliable but I do miss the G3's screen terribly. Lol...

I'm no chip expert, but everything I have read has confirmed this.
The next one will be 64, but apps and games no where near max out the current tech we have.
It will probably be forever before 64 bit tech is taken advantage of.

Hmmm... It sure looks like a nice device. I sure hope that Samsung has all the bugs worked out by the time this hits the market and Id like to see it here in Canada as well...
I've come to really like the physical home button (missing from this new model) on the i9000 as well as that little hump at the botton of the back. Two ways to easily orrient the phone without having to look at it.
Would that 50% more subpixels really improve the text quality on the SAMOLED-plus ?
I hope they sorted out the screen burn issues..

8 MP Camera won't change much if the lens and sensor are still of the same size. Anyway always remember that your display is about 2 MP (full HD)
The best improvement is S-AMOLED+. 4.5" is also interesting, but some people will prefer smaller phones. That extra 200 MHz is better than nothing, but I hope that they also added more RAM or the performance will be about the same.
Hmm I hope something like this hits the UK. I'd love a 4.5" Galaxy S Although I'd rather wait for some major dual core phones to hit the market.
[whistle|thinks] Maybe the GSM version will be [/whistle|thinks]
4,5 inches?? Wow that's just too much, 4 inches are just perfect, but i wouldn't go any larger.. i'd like to see a 3,7 oder 4 inches superamoled+ samsung dual core 8 MP with xenon light and honeycomb android.. everything else would be just a minor upgrade ^^

Exactly...i dislike the idea of having a phone bigger than 4". Even when going for the SGS i was a little undecided. Id rather not have a huge hand held game like device as a phone, it should look sleek and professional, but these qualities are compromised the bigger the size. Bigger screen and therefore phone doesnt mean better. Its nice to be able to use the galaxy s with the same hand that is holding the phone.
Bigger size is just a waste in my opinion.
I cant say I see this as much of an improvement over the current sgs, where the hell is Orion? Delayed? Dropped off the radar?
And yeah, the 4.5" screen sounds like a bit much.
Not sold on 4.5" here either. Even 4" (as much as I like it over smaller sizes) is a stretch to use with one hand. It is a reach to hit the far side in 'landscape' orientation.
In terms of just looks though it should be a stunner with RGB sub-pixels instead of pentile.
I think this may be classed as a 'middle-man' to the S2.
Not too much will chance, but as I'm completed addicted to this Galaxy S and Android in general, I will no doubt upgrade to the SGS+
As informed by gsmarena the galaxy note 2 will have a 5.5 inch screen and will look like the galaxy sIII, which i personally am not too keen on.
http://www.gsmarena.com/exclusive_g...ins_narrower_than_original_note-news-4455.php
That's about as much confirmed as Spain will win the European Championship this Sunday.
I have also heard it will have a 5.4" Flexible OLED screen and neither that is confirmed either.
I'd bet my whole device that the screen WILL be larger by a bit.
You know, as much as I'd love to stay up with current trends, I'm not too moved by the S3 and Note 2. They don't have that much of an edge over the S2 and Note, so it's not really that worth it to upgrade. Again, this is just my views:good:
The styling too is not one that I'm particularly liking, the whole rounded shape and the materials used. Yes, some might say that it's a step in the right direction, but I say there was nothing wrong with the S2 and Note's design in the first place. Even the software loaded on these devices.... Surely they could have rework TouchWiz completely, as it still looks the same even compared to GB.... So, is it worth it to upgrade to the next generation of devices....? Unless your life depends on the latest trends and fashion...... No...
These views are my own, and should not be seen as a generalization. I speak for myself, and not on behave of any other member...
From my point of view, for the time being, the Note 2 current specs are not worth the purchase since the Note 1 has everything I need for my daily use. If the upgraded device has nothing 'New' to give to the market, this will really be a letdown...8mpx cam? 1.5 ram? and still dual core???? be serious, there's nothing to be in awe!
But 1 thing is mostly certain for us : if these specs prove to be true, even if the Note 2 is not a "Big" upgrade of the Note 1, most of us will shift to it once it is released to follow the trend. Early adopters and the tech geeks, will always want to owe the latest devices and not stick to an older one. I'm not personally impress by the Note 2 specs now, but I will certainly get one when it is out like many of you, people...
I don't think they'll go with the Exynos 5250 dual core, even though it is a better chip IMO because if they don't go quad than most wont upgrade

You are right, except that it will be not flexible but inflatable, not 5.4 but 42" and will come with built-in espresso machine (one of those with automatic grinder).
What does "confirmed" even mean here? Some site managers think they'll get attention by running an article of pure imagination, and then GSMArena says, "yes, we agree." Apparently, this is "confirmation." How should GSMArena know? They didn't even say they had a "source."

Note = 1280x800 = 16:10
To make it 16:9 they'd either have to drop the resolution to 1280x720, or increase it to something like 1366x768 or 1600x900.
1920x1080 would be nice, but I doubt it'll happen, it'd be total overkill.
If they're not going quadcore, then the Exynos 5250 would be fine given that they can run at 2Ghz and it's got a beefy T-604 GPU instead of the lowly 400. Power usage should be much improved as it's a 35nm processor versus the positively archaic 45nm we have now.

To me and the most important thing about the galaxy note 2 is 2 gigs of ram

I simply can't stand notification lights, I remember old pdas, that used to have those annoying flashing leds, that's one more thing I love about the note, that will be the first thing I turn off.

I am an enthusiast Note owner, grabbed one of the very first ones 10 months ago. It's simply the ONLY TRUE SMARTPHONE out there, NOTHING compares to it.
Although I am extremely satisfied by my Note I was obviously very interested in the Note II not because I was planning in upgrading anytime soon but because in time that was surely going to be my next smartphone.
Well, having just seen the actual specs I can say that I am (gladly BTW) going to wait for the Note III and if my Note gets stolen/lost before then I am going to buy a new NOTE "I" (yes, "one", as in the original version of the Note)!
The reason? Well the Note II is improved practically in everything, in some areas it's been even GREATLY improved, I really like it a lot. The problem is that the ONE thing they have not only NOT improved upon but actually made it WORSE (or, better said: less good) is the most critical one: the SCREEN!!
5.5" 16:9 vs. 5.3" 16:10 means that it has a very slightly bigger overall area BUT it's NARROWER so it's actually smaller in the most critical dimension of any wide screen!! WTF?!? Wide screens (looked in landscape) don't need any less "vertical" space, they are already plenty wide and what they all lack is vertical space/height when doing anything else but watching movies!!
It's the same phenomenon we have witnessed in PC monitors. We have gone from 4:3 to 16:10 (reasonable enough although I initially resisted the change and only gave up when I began to watch a lot of videos/movies on it) to 16:9 which is totally unnecessary and just F'ing stupid!! It just makes you having to always scroll even more!
As a matter of fact, I am going to cling to my 24" 16:10 Eizo for a long long time yet...
So, in short, I love practically everything about the Note II BUT its most critical thing: the screen.
I will pass.
P.S. Actually there is another aspect in which the Note I is better than this second version but it's totally subjective and it's a pretty unimportant aspect to me: the looks. It's not that I don't like the Note II, it's actually pretty good looking. But the Note I is, to me, much better looking.

If you imply that this is just one more of the several threads opened on the Note II, this one is supposed to focus on this one point: the most important spec of the Note, the screen, is WORSE on the Note II than on the original Note.
BTW, I started this thread especially because on the last thread I have been active on apparently I was going in too many details in my replies (i.e. my posts were "too long") and my last post was deleted.
I figured it's OK to be as much "long" (i.e. THOROUGH and EXHAUSTIVE) as I want on a thread where I am the OP.
If mods see it differently so be it, I guess I will become a lurker and be done with it.

I don't care all that much for PPI, it's way overrated and it's good enough in both cases anyway. The issue is having to scroll even more than you have to now when using the screen in landscape doing anything else but watching movies... Browsing, documents reading (let alone editing..!) etc etc
P.S. Anyway, they did go from a Pentile matrix to an RGB one so it should actually be better notwithstanding the slightly lower PPI. As I said, the Note II really is better in EVERYTHING but screen size/aspect ratio! Crazy...

Ok, jokes aside and expanding a little here: I will not upgrade to a Note II and I will replace my Note "I" with a Note "I" (if I was forced to before the Note II comes out) because I have tons of accessories for it and since its major draw has NOT been improved upon I would totally lack the motivation to discard the numerous and expensive accessories I have for the original Note and to buy the same ones for the new Note.
If I started today "from scratch" I would buy a Note II indeed...

I think youre overreacting a bit. Like you, i saw the 1280x720 spec and was sorely disappointed. I also happen to be one of the lucky few who does not suffer from black clipping on my note. If i had the clipping, no amount of pixels would make me happy. We have yet to see if that issue has been solved. If it has, note ii is a worthy upgrade for many.

Um, you do realize that the screen is only 'less wide' by .09 inches?
You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but aren't you overreacting a bit?
I can't even imagine how you'd react to the iphone changing from 4:3 to 16:9.

I think you're missing the point.
It's that the phone has lost 80 pixels (i.e., 1280x800 to 1280x720).
When you're browsing things, the extra pixels do matter so you can view more content on the screen.
16:10 > 16:9 anyday.
I think I'll actually prefer the 16:9 screen. Seems to be the standard now for high end androids anyway.
And isn't the screen pixel arrangement RGB instead of pentile on the Note II? Can't stand the whole 'pentile is rubbish' statements I see everywhere (as I love the screen on my Note), but I'm sure there's a noticeable visual improvement to the screen on the Note II.
I for one, am definitely upgrading.
I bummed about the screen also..I'll be honest I bought the Note for the screen plain and simple..
I use landscape a lot so any bit taken away from me I will definitely notice.
Keeping it simple:
2 phones identical specs except for screen/overall size.
Which would you prefer 4.7" or 5"?
Definitely prefer 4.7 which is one of my reasons for choosing this over what the samsung galaxy 4 is rumoured to be.
4.7 just fits better in my hand.

This should be posted in General really as it isn't specific to this phone.
To get it moved, report the thread and ask for it to be moved.
thank you for starting such a great thread.
im sure that htc will look at this forum and if more people vote for 5" than 4.7", they will recall all the HTC Ones and replace them with a 5" version.
5 is too big, I think.
From my Evo LTE, yup.
5" is the perfect size IMO. The 5.5" N2 that I have is just too big, it's very difficult to try and use one handed. I used the DNA for a week and it was the best combination of screen size and usability.

5 is a too big device for my trousers....
After playing with the one x extensively and with the DNA i would say... I do Like a 5 inch Screen but not better... and I but i would also PREFER having the Stereo Speaker more than having a 5 inch screen so easy choice 4.7 inch all the way

Don't wear skinny jeans then!
Why doesn't the poll offer an option for screen sizes above 5"? I'm thinking somewhere around 6.5" would be good; maybe a little more.
My personal preference it's that 5" is just too big, and opens the door to too many old jokes. "Is that a phone in your pocket......?"

Let's go higher and have it up to 8 inch. The Galaxy Note 8.0 can be used as a phone.
i like the scores so far
at 5" we crossing the phablet threshold and loosing the last bit of single hand operation

It depends how big your hands are. For me, on a 4.8 inch SGS3 I can easily reach all 4 corners and beyond with one hand. I'm quite confident that I'll be able to use a 5 inch phone with one hand too.
But for those with smaller hands I can see why you would prefer a smaller screen.

Yeah, it doesn't have a full HD display, though. No tablet in the 7-8" range that I'm aware of has - a source of considerable frustration for me, I can assure you.
Its better for the sharpness to have 4,7 ... i mean it is 1,5 times as sharp as an iphone thats sick!
5'' would drop the ppi!

Some would argue that we are in an area of diminishing returns when it comes to ppi increase.
For instance would we really notice the ppi increase from the One X to the One in day to day use?
Our eyes have a threshold and in the last year or so we have reached it. 1080p on a 4.7 inch screen really is over kill, BUT it was also necessary as Joe Public thinks bigger is better. Most people would take a 1080 flagship over a 720 so it wasn't an option for HTC.
Why are people complaining?
Nothing is bad with the screen! I can see everything just fine!
Grab it and put it beside an ipad

This is an HD screen so good in appearance, but if you compare screens with say the tf700 or even my 1080p phone screen you begin to understand just how much difference there really is. 400 ppi or higher makes everything sharp and clear. Letters pop out, and images are clear and vibrant. Even the simple act of forum reading is enhanced at 1080p 400+ ppi. There is no real comparison, true high def is simply better. While this screen is adequate it doesnt sing, 400 ppi is a Symphony.

True. But it really isn't bad per se. The only area where it's really noticable is text but to make text more readable rather than make it bigger I turn up the brightness. In the days of 440+PPI displays 147PPI isn't anything to write home about. But like OP said, that doesn't make it "bad." It's certainly livable.

Wacom displays cost lots more than standard displays. Higher Res equal much more cash.
What tablet had 400+ ppi when this was launched?

I have no problems with it too but that may be coz I don't have a comparison to make. I read somewhere the resolution is limited due to wacom. But I doubt that's the main reason, since even the recent galaxy tab 3 kept the low resolution. I can't help but fear the next note 10.1 will be the same. But how about using the Sony xperia ultra screen technology on this? Works with any pen input

Because it costs money to buy off Sony... Why pay a competitor when you have good tech yourself....
We have become a bit spoilded with screen resolution anf ppi, every year the ppi gets denser and denser , personally at 340+ ppi I can't see the pixels with my naked eyes why one would need a ppi of 400 + is more for the company to get people to buy the latest product from them

Agreed. And the worse is consumers suffer due to the compromise on battery life.

Exactly, when I first read about the screen I realized that if I'm going to be taking notes on this thing all day and then some (which as a college engineering student I DO), that if the screen was something like Super AMOLED or Retina Display, the tablet's battery wouldn't last me through the day.

1 getting the most for my money is important. Thats not being spoiled that is using your brain
2 this tablet is no where near 340 ppi. in fact it is 149 ppi. samsung is way behind in screen tech
3 everyone is not the same so some will be on the high end of normal and see 440 ppi
4 battery life will not suffer if you use the latest processor's from this year, in fact it will increase
5 watching movies and or videos in 1080p 400+ ppi is a superior experience
6 at our current ppi text is sometimes crappy and always dull. At 400 it is not so hard on my old eyes to read.
As ive said before I like this tablet a lot, and for the most part i even like touch wiz. if however samsung doesnt get with the times this year with the plethora of 1080 screens and 3gb ram, 2+Ghz machines coming out Q4 this year and Q1 next year I will gladly give my money away to another. Samsung has in the past been on the cutting edge and I think they most likely will be this year as well, so I expect we will see a 1080p unit that I will adore. This was the best overall machine when i bought it imho because when you factor the power of the cpu, battery life and smooth running rom plus stylus the only detractor was the screen. That said its a new year and I expect more from the next generation or I will simply reserve my money for a unit that tops my current note 10.1. That could be asus or sony, or anyone. Im not a fanboy, i put my money where i get the best value on the highest end of tech.

Your right getting the most bang for our your buck is important, that being said the note was on par with most of the Android tablets out there. I don't know much about how much more power it would use but i have heard that the nexus 10 that share a lot of the same hardware as the note has problems with stutter with some of the games that the note has no problem with. Text is a bit hard to read at times but there are ways to adjust it from within the browser or reader app you are using. Would I like a higher ppi, yes am I gonna complain about nope love the note and the s pen makes up for up for all of any shortcomings
Sent from my GT-N8010 using xda app-developers app
I totally agree with the OP. Screen isn't bad at all just that the text is a little hard at times, but nothing zooming in won't fix. I actually sold me Nexus 10 and got this device . I have no regrets what so ever. I find myself using this tablet more than I did with the Nexus 10 because of its functionality. All the Nexus 10 got was a nice screen and that's it plus it had something called "Surface flinger" and memory leaks which makes the tablet extremely slow. The Note 10.1 works flawlessly.
