Gen 4 2014 Kindle HDX 8.9 - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" General

I just purchased this device, is it mod-able so i can put CM11 on it?
I seen a lot of different versions that were, but since mine is only a few
days old. I wanted to make sure so i do not Brick it.
Maybe even put Lollipop if possible
Thank you.

Your device is "Fire HDX 8.9". Amazon removed "Kindle"-prefix for new devices.
You can do nothing at this time. Totally nothing. Cause you can't obtain root to begin anything.
And this device has locked bootloader. Kindle Fire HDX previous gen hasn't CM until now. 1 year has passed...

Might have very long wait forit, if ever, for cm11. Little to no dev interest even though it had great hardware specs. I've been waiting over a year.

My point was it may have an effect on the dev community here, for this particular iteration of the Fire. I would rather see them still sell the older model alongside new ones which, I would think, would keep it alive longer. I guess I think that way because when Google just released their 7" tablet there was a wave of "I'm leaving" threads in the Kindle Fire forums. And, although that article says the next-gen low end unit is the same but with ICS, I'm guessing the hardware may be different enough that it isn't interchangeable with the current model.
If they think they have a chance in hell at competing with the Nexus 7 with the new bootloader ID versions, they'll be sorely mistaken.
doubt its an issue. there's over 5 million units floating around. a community will exist.

Well there hasn't been a official statement from amazon, but rumor is that there will be a boot loader is in all of the new fires. So yes, if this is true, then the kindle will go into a soft brick that can be unbricked by other means, but t will not boot if the bootliader is not correct.
I hope is isn't the case tho, I preordered the fire HD 8.9inch and wouldn't want to brick it by attempting to put a custom boot loader on my self):
I would seriously consider the consequences of buying one if you have any plans of modifying it. If Amazon's history with our current devices is any indication of what's to come, a lot of people may very well get screwed out of the deal. And if Pokey is correct, and the new KFs have the same OMAP security as the Nook tablet, you might as well give up on it because the new KFs won't have an external SD slot to boot from. You'll get stuck with one crappy, advertisement riddled, non-customizable, crippled, overpriced reader, that's as buggy (if not more) than the original.
I definitely wouldn't buy one in the hopes that it will get modified unless you have the technical know-how to get it done yourself.
That is, IMNSHO of course.
amazon is trying to copy apple. Of course they would do that
it sounds like the boot loader would have to be rewritten some how, and that in its self seems unlikely
kindle fire hd or nexus 7?
if amazon does this they are just trashing their product. i am very tempted to return my nexus 7 which has such bad build quality.

On topic I was mildly interested in Fire HD just for Prime content and wanting to see if a ROM was developed. No ROM, no way. Will be following the subject.

The $200 excuse kinda came to an end when Amazon announced the Fire HD at $200. For Android enthusiasts and XDA readers it's probably not going to be that big a deal, but I believe the Kindle Fire HD will be very popular to the general public.
And it does trump a few of the Nexus 7's weak points.
Better screen with more vibrant colors.
Better wifi with 5GHz and MIMO support.
Better storage capacity at the same prices.
Better speakers.
And HDMI output.
The Nexus 7 has performance and apps on it's side, which are obviously extremely important to many of us.
I'll not replace my Nexus 7, but if the Kindle Fire HD can be rooted and Google Play installed, I just might get one.
PS... And B&N isn't done yet. They supposedly have something coming soon too. Microsoft invested $200 million with them, perhaps some kind of $200 Windows tablet? They promise a revolutionary screen and they've generally included micro SD slots so far too, hope that continues. I just hope they get away from that raised plastic bezel, so annoying with apps that use off screen swipes.

You are right. Just hard not to respond to the comments brought up.
Bezos said he doesn't care if you root
I read on Engadget after the announcement that Engadget asked Bezos about people rooting and running custom ROM's. Bezos' response was that as long as your still buying from Amazon, he doen't care. So, I guess we'll see. Mine has already made it to the UPS Distro Center in my city and it got there a little after Noon today. I should have it in the morning!!!! As a Student Prime member, I would love it if we could get rid of the ads without paying the $15.
The reason I bought the original fire is because i wanted to root it. The fact is, the stock kindle fire is crap if you're a power user.

The bootloader is one thing. Custom recovery is a completely different animal. Is the same OMAP security applied to the stock recovery?
I was thinking about buying an 8.9 inch one along with my 7" one. But, until this boot loader stuff is figured out. No way.

[Q] tf700 broke... replacement???

hey guys... im a frequent reader (not poster) of the forums and have a simple question. my mom broke my tf700 so i sent it in to squaretrade and the are reimbursing me $499.99 bc they can not fix it (first time using squaretrade and im very happy i insured it through them).
What should i replace it with? i loved the tf700 but i cant see myself spending $400ish on a devices thats a year and a half old.
i was thinking nexus 10 but the same problem as the tf700 comes into play... $400ish for a year old device. it would be a big disapointment to buy it and have the nexus 10.2 come out next month at CES. i understand that tech is always gettin better and ill always be waiting for the next upgrade and yada yada yada but a year old tablet at $400 is a little pushing it. The upside is that the device wouldnt need to be unlocked as it has the best rom on it (stock kitkat).
i was also thinking of the kindle fire hdx 8.9 bc that seems like the best bang for your buck at the moment. It has the newest and best hardware out and is getting great reviews. the only problem with the hdx is that the bootloader isnt unlocked and who knows if it will eventually be (i have faith but i dont wanna drop $400 soley on faith). if i get the hdx it is a must that it would have to be on a custom rom as i cant stand the mojito rom amazon uses.
so pretty much my question is what would you buy if you were on the market for a tablet today???
PS- what is you guys opinions on 7" tablets?? i think 10" is where the swet spot is but if you guys can persuade me otherwise.

I think the Nexus 10 will suit your needs. Seriously it is really good. Even after a year. Its still a high end tablet. Maybe you should wait till the end of the month to see if the new n10 will be announced/released. But to this day only rumours suggested it would come. Nothing in sight yet.
I personally hate 7" tablets. They are just phones that are too big and hij cant call with them. I mean: too big for a phone too small for a tablet. But thats just my opinion.
I own a Nexus 10 and love it. Especially with art. I really recommend it if you are searching for a 10" tablet.

thanks a lot for you input... i really appreciate it. any thoughts on the kindle???
Hi,
While I think that Kindle tablet is really interesting, if you want to see deeper development it isn't the best choice, as you said it probably won't have the bootloader unlocked, while on Nexus 10 you just type "fastboot oem unlock" and it's done haha! The tablet you had before is a 10" tablet, so I think you'll have a better time with another 10" tablet .
Also don't really worry about the tablet age, while everything new will appear almost every month, that doesn't mean the older are bad! I have a Xoom that mom broke the display, so I got Nexus 10, both are amazing devices, while Nexus 10 is way more powerful, I can still use my Xoom on HDMI with no problems . It's just a matter of adaptation, then you won't invest "useless money" if you understand what I mean .
In other words of my adaptation metaphor. Go for one tablet that is good enough and has a good development community, then you're assured that it will last a good long life hehe.

thanks for all the feedback guys... i went for the kindle fire. Amazon extended the return period until jan 30 so i have just about 50 days to tinker with it and decide if shes a keeper. i was just stunned at the screen the kindle had. it simply is beautiful. the nexus 10 was the best android screen but i think the kindle now has the best tablet scrren in the world (ipad included). just hoping that the bootloader gets unlocked bc i dont know if i can stand this fire os crap. that is by far the only flaw i can think of on this bad boy, however, it is a big one!!

I was going to suggest the new TF701T or Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 as possibilities. If you're okay with Apple, the iPad Air looks nice and is the lightest 10" tablet out there now.

Should I Buy an 8.9?

Do you guys believe this device will get much love from ROM developers? I love to tinker with my devices and don't want to be stuck with something that has no development?
Opinions?
No one can answer this only you. It could be tomorrow or next year.. sorry
Right now I wouldn't, I've got it and it's just sitting there collecting dust till there is a rom. No Google on an Android tablet is absurd.
here's my take as a lay person
Most of the people who want hardcore development will opt for the slightly underpowered, but very capable, Nexus 7. While the Kindle fire HDX 8.9 offers marvelous hardware, with a top of the line display, it has a locked, and guarded bootloader, which will be tough to crack. While it has already been rooted, and their is safestrap, roms will be limited until the bootloader is cracked. Kernel flashing will obviously be impossible without this. The root capability opens the window, but the door is still closed. I have the 7", and I do enjoy flashing roms, customizing, and tinkering simply for the sake of learning, but I don't have lofty expectations of the devs. While they are wonderful, and make an uncalled for effort to make every device perform at it's peak, I cannot see a locked device getting an abundant amount of attention, when a similarly capable, same-gen piece of hardware came out offering exactly what you already want. You may need to look at other similarly priced 10" tablets, that offer the same hardware, or close, that can be unlocked with a simple click, rather than 100s of man hours, and a bit of hope.
I was going to purchase the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 but Office Depot had a great deal on the 7" Kindle Fire HDX. $179.99 plus you get a $20.00 gift card.

I've been side-loading my Google Apps, and I'm quite happy with mine so far. I say go ahead and get one. You can always return it within a month.
My advise is for you to buy it.
I already rooted it and, thanks to @andoidcowboy tutorial, i got all my google apps working.
I live outside US and I am able to stream all PRIME content (movies, series, etc) using some DNS...
Hardware is really awesome, tab is really comfortable... i just love the darn thing! only thing i regret is not buying the 64gb one...
If you want real custom ROM's like CyanogenMOD or SlimRom's, then keep looking elsewhere. Because Kindle isn't getting them ANYTIME soon.
If nobody can flash one of these ROM's on a current release of the Galaxy S4 AT&T phone then you can believe the HDX isn't going to be any better.
Only the first two releases of S4 can flash AOSP. Any S4 released in the last 2-4 months is screwed.
All I'm hoping for its maybe a stock rom debloated . Google play . And can still access my prime features

At this point no. Most Dev's want to go after the easier targets that do not have locked bootloaders. Amazon has no one to blame but themselves if they fail (again) with this device.
I was this close to buying one, but after using the Nexus 5 and seeing how life is so much easier with unlocked bootloader, I'm never going back to a device that is not a Nexus or GPE. If I'm going be someone's b****, it better come with more benefits than Amazon Prime.

I'm not sure Amazon failed in the past with their Kindle Fires. Failed in the eyes of Devs maybe but not to normal consumers.
Which apps are compatible with rooted Kindle fire HDX 8.9
Hi there!
I'm thinking about getting the kindle 8.9 for its awesome hardware, but I'm concerned about what apps are available? Assuming I root the device, can I side load ANY android app? Or only the handful that I see threads about on this forum? (e.g., google apps).
If I'm limited to a handful of apps that's probably a deal breaker.
Thanks in advance!

You can sideload. Some apps (like ones on Fdroid) need Root. The troublesome part is finding apks (Android version of installer file for app). You can use a back up tool on another device or search the net for apks (that are not Trojan/Virus modded).

I kinda disagree on this.
I agree on the Devs hitting the easier targets, but going by the specs and the price I think it's fairly clear (happy to be proved wrong lol) that Amazon are selling the HDX's at minimal profit and are relying on revenue from sales of their wares through pushing it massively through the Kindle OS.
Amazon obviously know that an unlocked bootloader == user removing Amazon specific features == lost revenue for them.
If it does fail it won't be due to the locked bootloader, IMHO. Although, I do feel they blew 1 toe off by not at least giving you the option of using Google Services on it, many apps require this and they could still bombard us with Amazon goodies.
Maybe, on the logic above, they could have released an unlocked version for a premium, but I for one would not have considered the Kindle HDX, regardless of the specs, if the price was more than a Nexus 7 2013.

Why not? Literally every single kindle fire has a custom firmware or port to it. It seems like you're pulling this "kindles aren't getting custom roms" out of your ass.Hell, i've got kit-kat 4.4 running on the original kindle fire.
I think the company that makes the kindle Foxcon/Asus/LG or whoever should have released a cosemetically altered version and sell it as a GPE. I would gladly pay $50 more for a unsubsidized version that isn't locked down. From what I read, the HW meets or exceeds Apple products.

Little to no profit on the base models but they are getting more on the higher storage models. The real problem is that such powerful hardware is gimped by the OS locked to the device. Truly a waste. And it can fail by word of mouth as well. Folks ask the "techie" in the family what to get and this can easily be shot down as an option thanks to the lack of options. Everyone I know has a custom Rom or at least rooted on their hardware. Especially since they had me do it.

I couldn't decide to be fair, so I took the choice out of my hands and just gave the GF a choice of what to get me between the HDX and a Nexus 7.
She obviously chose the HDX for me and I can't say I'm disappointed.
I do have a Nexus 4 though so I can mod that to my hearts content. Her logic was why would I need 2 devices to do the same thing?
Fair call...

Fire 7 / HD 8 Refresh [Spring 2017] - No HDX Replacement in Sight

https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/17/...let-refresh-release-date-pricing-kids-edition
It seems as though Amazon has decided to bow out of the "higher end" market, which is a shame. They've decided instead to stick with the lower price, high volume market to get more people into their ecosystem. At the time that the HDX first came out, it was actually relatively inexpensive for a tablet with its specs. It's one of the reasons that I bought it in the first place. If they had built it with micro SD storage, it would have been darn near perfect. I guess I'll just have to hold onto my old HDX 7 until it rolls over and dies.
I think Android tablet market as a whole is dead. Amazon just interest to sell ecosystem.

Well, that shows how little attention I've paid to the tablet market. The last time I really paid any attention was over 3 years ago when I purchased my HDX 7.
Honestly I actually pre-ordered the new Fire HD 8, because my second tablet: the Nexus 7 2013 is somehow stuck in a unfixable bootloop (it sucks but I did make a recent backup) I didn't want to be stuck with one tablet again, so I thought that the 2017 Fire HD 8's specs was as close as possible (on paper) for the same price I paid for my HDX 7. So I'll definitely tell you guys my verdict in about a week of everyday use.

I think the likely verdict is understood by those familiar with both devices. They do not play in the same space aside from vendor, approximate screen size and base operating system (Android derivatives). Beyond that night and day.
