People who have switched from another 2013 flagship to the Moto X

I continue to hear only good things about the Moto X and I'm tempted to pick one up at the $350 sale price. I currently have a Droid DNA (which is on par with the 2013 flagships) running Sense 5 - it works well but has it's annoyances, however I don't know if it will actually be a good idea to upgrade from. My thoughts/concerns:
-Size: Going from a 5" 1080p screen to a 4.7" 720p screen is going to be a big change, especially since the Moto X screen is actually about 4.3" with the on screen buttons. However, I've found the DNA to be too big sometimes (especially with the power button on the top, it's my biggest annoyance) so I may like the slight downsize.
-Camera: The DNA takes great pictures, and I love the Sense 5 camera. The Moto X camera however sounds like its below average, so this would be a clear downgrade.
-Wireless Charging: Having a Nexus 7 and DNA I rarely plug anything in anymore. I've got 3 chargers between my house and office so this would be another adjustment with the Moto X.
-Root: I don't care abut an unlocked bootloader but I need root (TiBu, Greenify, Tasker). I wasn't planning on getting the DE (too late now anyways) but the hassles of getting root with each update worries me.
Those things are my biggest concerns. I'm very much interested in Moto X's software features and quick updates though (among other things). I've thought about just getting a Droid Maxx (keep the big screen and wireless charging) but not for $150 more and slower updates.
Also, I'm the kind of person that switches phones about every 6 months (buying/selling used usually). I get bored or I find something that annoys me about a device. The DNA's resale value is dropping real quick (from $300 a few months ago to just over $200 now) so the sooner I sell the better probably.
So, for anyone that's come from an S4, One, G2, etc - do you regret it? Can anyone sway me one way or another?

I came from an s4 and don't regret it in the least. Actually, I do miss the ir blaster a bit, but that's it.

I came from an S4 and G2. I honestly don't miss those devices. They're definitely powerhouses but the Moto X is just an all around better device...for me at least. The difference from 1080p to 720p isn't that noticeable since the ppi is still high on the X. If you compare both side by side and zoom in on stuff then yea you're bound to notice something. The camera is pretty good. You can check out the picture thread in this section to see some pics. I have the dev edition so rooting is easy but I'm sure the regular ones will be rootable with future updates especially if more devs get this device with the sale.

Im very happy with Moto X. I have had (this year) Note 2, Razr Maxx, SG4, HTC ONE and LG G2. Size and features are what did it for me.

I think the two biggest things that are likely to disappoint people coming from a flagship phone to the Moto X are going to be the camera (mediocre, especially in low-light settings) and the AMOLED display (extremely saturated, this is moreso going to be the case for people coming from LCD screens like the Nexus 5).

I came from a Nexus 4, to a Nexus 5 for almost a couple week, then to the Moto X. I am loving it so far. Like you, I've been so used to wireless charger and this is probably the only feature I kind of miss.
Size was actually one of the deciding factor for me. Nexus 5 was slightly too big for my taste. The size and the build quality makes this a really nice phone to use.
Camera is not so great on the Moto X, but is more than what I need. The Nexus lines never had great cameras, either. Not sure how it compares to a DNA.
Ultimately for me, active notification and Moto Maker are the features that make me switch to Moto X. Maybe it should for you, too?

I bought a DE yesterday and I currently have a One. I am anxious to see as well as the One can sometimes be too large for my liking especially with the power button on top. I am thinking the screen and the aluminum body are going to be the only things I miss - the dev support on the One has been great lately too though.

I came from a Note 3, and the software on the X is just so much better. I always feel like I'm using Gingerbread when I use Touchwiz, but the X is a very nice 4.2.2 experience. The Active Notifications are wonderful as well!
I think the thing to remember about the X, is that you must look past the hardware. Its hardware really isn't great, but the software is like a testbed of all of Google's neat ideas that they didn't want to test in the Nexus line.

I ordered one of the VZW developer versions yesterday, and I am excited to switch from my GS3. However, I do hope development picks up after this sale because I can't seem to find much for this phone.
But rest assured that out of the box, due to the AOSP nature of the phone, it will feel smooth and speedy compared to many other flagship phones.

I am kinda of afraid to switch from s4. I am on custom ROM 4.3 and kernel with all the goodies and tweaked screen colors to my liking. Camera quality is obviously good, screen is near perfect, some development in forum, battery is very good on S4, everything works with 0 bugs.
I like moto x design and feel, don't care about specs, but I do care about those too blue or too yellow screens and as well as camera quality. Some photos I've seen at link above of moto x are horrible.

I came to the X from Nexus 4/5 because of the common sense design, and I am hopeful the industry takes note of its success. It seems most phones are going out of their way to employ technology solutions that are looking for a problem.
Design the phone to fit your hand, duh! Ever picked up a Samsung device?
We pull these out and turn them on a hundred times a day... one button at the top right to do this is silly. And voice commands are great, but if you have to pull out your phone and turn it on to execute them... well, you get my point.
And while we should all keep phones locked when out and about, having to always enter your pin is tiresome. Kudos to Apple fingerprint scanner, but trusted Bluetooth and nfc is even more convenient.
And I don't use my phone for photography... I have an slr around my neck when I want to take pictures. To me, phone cams are for capturing a moment you weren't planning on, and hence need to do it as quickly as possible.
These are the common sense issues the Moto X addresses that other phones don't. Hopefully the X2 will address even more.
Yes, I will miss some aspects of the Nexus 5, but I don't use any of those a dozen times a day. Wireless charging is probably the most missed. I am done with the spec race, and want a phone that works better.
While you can have a cool titanium and composite hammer, if it is not weighted effectively for the task of driving nails, it's of less use than an old steel one.

I came from a G2 and before that a S4. I don't miss the S4 one bit, I do like the G2 like its knock knock feature and its form factor is nice (big yeti hands). But other than that I don't miss either of the phones over the Moto X. I will be ordering a Moto X DE today or on the 9th so my wife can get the Moto X I currently have and I get a DE device. She is currently using the S4 and before that she and I were GNex users. She is liking the S4 but she was instantly drawn to the Moto X the evening I picked it up from the VZW store.
The display on the S4 was nice to me. The G2 is just plain sexy and blew away the S4 IMO. The Moto X screen is nothing to laugh at. I do like the G2 display over the Moto X but not enough to make it a show stopper.
The form factor of the S4 was not bad, the size was not a factor with it, the same with the G2. I did like the G2 over the S4 as it felt not as cheap. The Moto X form factor and build quality puts Samsung and LG to shame. The Moto X feels solid, they went back to their roots on this one. Makes me feel like I got the awesomeness of the Droid 1 and the Droid X and not the joke quality of the Bionic. I am not afraid of the Moto X might break when I hold it like I did the S4.
Speed wise.. The S4 blew my GNex out of the water, very fast and once I put CleanROM, Eclipse, or CM 10.2 on it the slight home stutter of the horrible TouchWiz launcher was gone. The G2 to me made the S4 feel sluggish and just not as spunky as it should be. With the G2 I am pretty much stock of the factory software but I did root it to debloat it and to also use G2 Xposed on it for the proper button placement that I like.
The Moto X is holding its own and I feel it is able to run against the G2 with everything I do in a days time. It is also able to do the gaming I like with no issues what so ever. Now if you do testing and all that then you will not see any of this based on those numbers. But if you actually use the device you will see it is not an issue.
The camera on the Moto X compared to the S4 is good. Comparing it to the stock camera on the G2 I feel the Moto X beats the hell out of it. Now with the Camera MODs for the G2 that are out then I will say the G2 is better way better. Comparing the Moto X camera to the N4 and I feel the N4 is better. But to be honest if I want a good picture then I will ask my wife to use her DSLR camera and take the picture for me. but for a camera phone it works. My smartphone camera-fu is not as strong as most but I might as well not even enter the race if you want me to talk camera with you. But for a typical user I can take a good picture and it does its job. Compare my camera shots to my wife camera shots using the same hardware and she beats me every time. Her take on the smartphone cameras are they are good for when you need a quick pic here and there but she prefers to take pictures with her DSLR camera over anything else.
You will not miss your phone when you switch to the Moto X. I am loving the near stock of Android on this device and I do like some of the features from Moto like the assist, trusted devices, active notifications, and the Motorola connect which replaced airdroid for me. Motorola is back to doing things right so far with the Moto X. Battery life is great with the Moto X as I am a pretty heavy data user with streaming media, web browsing, XDA, Reddit. I do about 10-60+ minutes of calls a day along with checking multiple gmail/email accounts. Screen is on 2+ hours everyday and I can go a full day on one charge and have just a pinch left over. With the GNex it was only possible with 3 extra batteries or a plug. The S4 could almost last the day but needed some power loving during lunch. The G2 could last till I got into the car and plug it in at the end of the day for me. The Moto X as I stated does last through my work day without the need of a charger near me as long as I don't go over a 12 hour work day with 2-3 hours in the car for driving to and from work. I am going to pick up one of the Moto battery packs as it is slim and doesnt take up a lot of room for those few days I go past 12hours.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I'm going to stop by the Verizon store today to play with one but I'm thinking I'll just try and get one tomorrow during the sale. If for some reason I really don't like it, I can always return it or sell it for near cost. Kind of makes me wish I got the DE yesterday so I wouldn't have any root worries, but I don't need the extra 16GB and I'm looking forward to having a custom designed phone. The community has always prevailed anyways.

although i am surprised you say N4 camera was better then Moto X, I tought N4 wasn't good at all compared to S4. I am not a fan of taking pictures with phone, but all my N4 pictures went straight to trash while some S4 pictures are keepers for sure.

I'd say the Moto X camera is between the N4 and N5 personally. Moto X camera is inconsistent and produces more grainier photos than N5 in my usage.

i really think part of the reason there's less development is that the phone is nearly perfect out of the box. I got my dev x before any sales and was looking for any reason to return it and couldn't find any

Well I just found out touchless controls don't work if you use a lock pattern or pin. So that's kind of a bummer. But I really liked how the phone felt in the store, and with free returns its pretty much a no risk chance to try it for 2 weeks.

Came from a DNA myself and an very pleased with my X. I'm already looking forward to a second-generation model. That said, the only thing I miss from my DNA was the burst mode picture capture which is replicated in this phone's software but not implemented as well.

I can from a DNA and a LG G2 and honestly, the only thing I really miss is the wireless charging. I still use my DNA from time to time (recently giving it to my bro since he broke his windows phone) and the screen is giant compared the moto x but for day to day use, its not noticeable.

Nexus Users

Do you guys think there'll be a surge of orders from Nexus users who don't want to upgrade to a phone as big as the Nexus 6?
The new Moto X is the closest to a Nexus phone now (not phablet).

I think it's more likely that they stick with the Nexus 5 and pray Google comes back down to earth next year. I can't imagine that releasing a 5.9" phone as your one and only is going to pay off.

Yeah, I think the Moto X might pick of a few Nexus users (myself included) if the next Nexus device really only offers a 6" screen. But I suspect the reasons people want a Nexus device go deeper than that. The 1st Gen. Moto X got almost no development. If you want the roms and the hacks and all that, nothing is like the Nexus (and the Moto X is far from 2nd runner up, in terms of amount of development). So the near stock rom on the Moto X is a bit of a mirage. I'm still not sure I'm ready to make the jump and lose out on the development options (as well as the increased control and potential privacy offered by something like Cyanogen, over any manufacturer maintained rom).
Also the price on the Nexus has always been at least $100 lower than what a Moto X goes for. That's going to be a big deciding factor. Nothing talks like money.
But for people who aren't into the roms and just like the stock Android experience and don't care about price so much, maybe some of them will jump ship from the Nexus.

Severely doubt a 5.92" screen... 5.2" is more likely. Otherwise, the other released and confirmed specs look good. Just depends on battery life for me.

Literally everything is pointing to a 5.9" screen. No one is even acknowledging that a 5.2" device is even in the works any more. More likely the 5.2" phone everyone was talking about was the Droid Turbo.

Are the Nexus 5 and Moto X using the same size sim?

Yea cause I'm most likely one of them. I think the better speakers is what I want most. Weak speakers is the only thing I don't like about the Nexus

I hope I don't offend some people, but it seems a sizable percentage of Nexus people look down on the Moto X because they think it's an overpriced stock Android phone and think it cost too much. This is also true with OPO users. They think just because a phone use stock Android it automatically worth less. They don't take in consideration the difference in hardware design and add-on features. I just think installing CM on the X just take away all the great things about it.

I was a Nexus 4 user, and why I got the Moto X is because my n4 was dying on me. Also, it's a nice phone, and the added hardware and software tweaks is worth enough for the price imo. I just want a clean stock experience, and that is why I like both the Nexus and Moto X

Nexus user here - owned every Nexus phone since the original. I've picked up a Moto X simply because this year's Nexus is too large. But I agree with the analysis here - the X is a good substitute, but it isn't quite the same thing and I hope we won't see any negatives from that. If we don't get L pronto I will be complaining all over Twitter :crying:

I bought the nexus 5 first and the moto x after but sold my nexus 5 and used the moto x exclusively. My wife got a new iphone so now i'm using her nexus 5.
Things i like since moving to the Nexus 5
larger crisper screen.
snappier performance (very noticable) whether in games, browsing, and using google now voice commands, everything just comes quicker and faster.
willingness to take more pictures because it has a better camera
Things i REALLY miss from the moto X
Active display. LED light from N5 doesn't cut it for me anymore
Touchless controls. I can't wake my phone from sleep. I don't use it much but when I want to I can't with the N5
--mics Moto's mics are awesome. I don't have to raise my voice like I do with the N5 when using the OK google command.
* on the N5 i have the google voice detection turned on for all screens and it drains the battery a little more. When plugged in, i leave the screen on so I have somewhat of touchless control.
Speaker - The moto's speaker is super loud compared to the N5.
Moto Assist - I use "AGENT" for the N5 but it's just not the same. The text reading and replying is very similar but with the Moto's mics the experience is better on the moto, but agent works very well as an alternative. Incoming calls aren't read out loud to you in Agent but they are in Moto Assist. AGENT relies on connecting to a trusted device in order for drive mode to come on while moto assist is able to detect when you're driving even w/o connecting to the trusted bluetooth device.
Battery life - i consistently get an hour more of SOT time with the moto over the N5 with just about the exact same type of usage.
There are a few other quirks between the two but these are the major ones for me.
The Moto X 2014 seems to blend both of these phones together and that's why I'm really wanting it, despite the battery life complaints. If it's equal to or greater to the moto x 2013 I'll probably get it. ESPECIALLY if the moto nexus doesn't have the moto tweaks. I doubt it does but i'm holding onto that small sliver of hope it does. These moto enhancements are very very very usual and i wish Google would bake these into Android but then Moto wouldn't be as unique any longer.

Dynamic Notifications is a nice substitute to use on the N5.
The N6/X at 5.9" is too big.

My take on it is that Motorola provides the nearest to Nexus experience (aside from GPE editions), with some extras in the sensors/software. The new Moto X is of the same hardware generation as the Nexus 5, so I think most will stick with the 5 unless they want a larger phone, and those will go to the 6 (which is about 1/2 generation newer if we believe the Snapdragon 805 [I almost called it a dragonball - now that will show my age in the mobile chip world] rumor). The phone jumpers will end up trying both the X and the 6, and may end up back at the 5.
I've been scratching my head between a Nexus 5 and Moto X to replace my work-supplied blackberry (company started to support Android in August) and think I am about to pull the trigger on the X. I thought about the M8 GPE, but holding both the new X and the M8 yesterday, the X definitely won out in-hand.

It's actually has some better features but it was ugly to look at from an angle since the n5 doesn't have the best viewing angles. Plus the turn screen on when pulling out of the pocket didn't work as well as the moto. Another feature I really like. Saves that power button.

Also, the battery drain will be a little bit more since the n5 screen is LCD. Having an active display like feature is made for amoled screens if you want to conserve battery

I'm considering the Moto X but I am waiting to see if a root method (an prefereably an easy way to unlock the bootloader like the first gen Moto X) appears for the non-pure edition devices. If that doesn't happen by January, I may just have to rock a stupidly huge device. Being able to root and customize/backup/automate to my heart's desire is the most important feature of a phone to me. Second is stock Android and fast updates (so obviously the Moto X meets that).

For those of us on Verizon who have suffered through the Galaxy Nexus' shortcomings (late / no updates) and the fact that the N4 and N5 weren't available on VZW. ---- the new MOTO X is really the only reasonable choice. Just ordered mine on Sunday to replace my ancient Galaxy Nexus. I'm hoping it is "pure enough". I do need someone to gain root though....

I know. Almost 3yrs at this point. But what was I gonna do? We have unlimited data on our two phones, and get a nice discount through my wife's work. And she travels in places like Kentucky and West Virginia so the Verizon coverage is a big deal. If it was just me I would've switched to T-Mobile already. So, considering that....what could I do but keep the Galaxy Nexus? I couldn't stand Samsung's crapware etc, and nothing else interested me. The new X is the first thing that seems like a real option.
I hope it lives up to my expectations.
My wife is still rocking a Motorola Droid Razr. If you think the Galaxy Nexus struggles to function now you should try her phone....she gave up before me, and she still uses a Blackberry Curve for work.

Moto X product line specs and features feedback

Hi,
I am starting this discussion for all the Moto X fans out there to have a say about their favorite features, the features they want and the features they would like changed (or changed back)
The main motivation on my judgement on features below is that I am considering the Moto X to be the most user friendly daily driver. All round phone that is not specialized, does everything well and nothing exceptionally great. Especially for the urban lifestyle (some may call it plastic or tin canned).
Size
The best thing I like about the 2013 Moto X is the 4.7 inch display, this gave the 2013 Moto X the reputation of the best one hand operated phone experience back at 2013 and I believe it should stay, 4.7 to 5 inch is perfect size.
It can also grow in size as different people would like different thing, but in my opinion to keep the one hand operation miracle alive, Motorola needs to keep a version of Moto X with 4.7-5 inch
Screen resolution
I am very happy with the 720, especially that the full HD screen eats up battery. I don't see any benefit of having HD display, even for media or gaming. Battery life is a crucial factor compared to minimal media quality.
Let's face it, media high quality is a nice option on tablet or a bigger device, watching media on the phone for most people (as I have noticed) is when you're waiting for the doctors at the clinic (who don't really know what the word appointment means) or on the bus etc. If I want to watch a video and enjoy it in high quality, I would watch it on a tablet or a laptop, or using my Moto X to cast it to a higher resolution device.
Battery life
Now we're talking, battery life is one of the most important features of the 2013 Moto X and I would give up a lot to keep it lasting a day at least, I would like Motorola to work on it, make it better. Along with the screen size, battery life has motivated me big time to buy the Moto X.
Wireless charging
A nice feature that would make the experience using Moto X even better, however not necessary, I got used to carrying a charger with me, or a decent power-bank, so while wireless charging can help on the work desk or at home, it's almost useless for people on the move (like myself) especially that it takes much longer to fully charge the phone
Touchless controls
Here is one of the best features I have ever seen in a phone. Really, well done Motorola. The ways to enhance this was already implemented on the new one, by customizing the trigger phrase, Motorola has shown it cares/listens to customers. Also the fact that the command list is expanding to cover more than Google voice.
If Motorola want to perfect this, they can allow other apps to use the Touchless controls by providing SDKs to third-parties (or a similar technique).
Enhancing experience and reducing time for repeated tasks
Shake to open camera, NFC accessories, Bluetooth trusted devices unlock are the main features allowing this.
The Motorola Skip is great, keep providing ways to address user frustration points, and time consuming repeated tasks (such as unlocking phone.) This phone addresses the most critical time consuming repeated tasks correctly. Motorola, we want more of those please.
Can you guys think of anything else other than Camera, unlock phone as repeated time consuming tasks? Let me (and Motorola) know.
SD slot
One of the features I wish Moto X had is an expandable memory, I have replaced most of the devices I use with Moto X and that's supposed to be the idea. Replacing alarm, car GPS, Camera mp3 player and more. This is a feature that I would love for Motorola to consider. Many people like myself have a big music library and it's a shame that a great device like the Moto X lacks this.
Camera
The Camera in the Moto X isn't that great, we all know that. Even the 2014 Moto X doesn't have a good one, but I can live with that, camera is not of a great significance to me, and for a all-round device it should not be a great camera. In conclusion, the camera there is sufficient
Style.
The Moto Maker is great, however it has a limitation, the design of the phone itself can enchance or kill the Moto Maker customization. I personally prefer the 2013 Moto X style better than the new one.
Water/Weather Proofing
The Moto X is supposed to be Nano-coated, so it's water proof to a degree, the touch screen cannot be used under water or under rain (even a few drops.) The urban lifestyle is all about being fit, sporty and outdoors. A proper water/weather proofing would be a great feature to consider
Price
No need to say anything here. It's reasonably priced for most parts of the world.
Everyday repeated tasks handling
This is where the Moto X product line excels. Here is a list of the features we love and notes about how to enhance them:
Touchless control: Great! I have already discussed this above.
Assist: I love it, especially for driving mode, however, Motorola needs to consider more ways to trigger the mode. I don't like the driving mode automatically on when on the bus or in a car which I am not driving. Triggering on only when connected to a specific bluetooth device can make this specific to my car which will be great. There are more ways to enhance this as well, please share your opinion.
Skip: I love skip unlock, even though some people lose it a lot, but it's only $10, which makes it easily replaced when lost.
Trusted devices: needs some work, you need to unlock the device once before the trusted device unlock work, very useful when in the car.
Shaking the phone for camera: no complains there, works great, and very useful indeed.
Notifications: Adding the feature to view multiple notifications when the phone is locked for the 2014 version is the update we were looking for, we have a thread discussing how this affects the 2013 Moto X here:

I am hoping that motorola adds more in this category, enhancing the user experience by reducing the time for repeated time consuming tasks is what makes the Moto X a great every day driver. Anything else you want added/discussed, please let me know.

Bringing Moto X features over to the S5

I'm coming to the S5 from the original Moto X, and there are a lot of features I really don't want to leave behind.
From what I can tell, the S5 doesn't have any kind of "Always listening mode" that lets you launch Google Now when the screen is off through a voice command. I'm still looking to see how to get that to function correctly witout draining all the battery. But what I would really like to have again is wave to wake and active/moto display.
Is there a way if I'm rooted to change a config file or something for the "Air wake up" feature? Right now it's a few seconds of holding your hand in front of the proximity sensor on the front to turn on the screen. But is there an app out there or a way to go into /sys to tailor that to how I want it to work? Or a ROM that does it?
Same thing for an Active/Moto display. The S5 has an AMOLED, so there's no reason why it should turn on the entire screen.

yes i have also used Moto G and it has moto Assist feature which i really want in S5 can u port this feature

Active Display requires more than just a screen, a controller is needed. S5 lacks it.

Touch Wiz is pretty bad honestly and I wouldn't want to use it again. I ended up going with a CM build (AICP) (Rooting and unlocking isn't that hard on it) which helps alot. Stock Marshmallow has a lot of the moto features baked in, and CM adds even more. In total though, I still miss the Moto X, but they never really updated the design past the 2014 version.
After getting past the initial software issues, the S5 is great. If you're getting it new, the processor still holds up, camera isn't bad (although doesn't show as much detail in low light as current gen devices), and having an SD slot and extra battery is awesome.

Thanks, appreciate the feedback! I have CM on my X now and would also want on s5. I think the version to get is the g900f. Know if I should update stock to the latest software before the CM attempt or does it not matter?
Better battery and better camera will be appreciated. I like active display on X but led notification should be just as useful. I think the overall size is what I'll miss most. The 13 x is just so easy to use one handed.
Were you happy with performance compared to X once you moved to CM?
I was waiting to get a pixel but just can't bring self to spending over $800 on a phone.

The root and bootloader unlock guides here are pretty solid. From what I remember, you have to be on a PB1 bootloader to unlock correctly, which is flashed via Odin. But I don't recall all of the details.
CM 13 has active display that works with the S5's AMOLED, but it's not quite as smooth/intuitive as the X, as the X had a dedicated chipset just for its Moto Display. That said, it does work in the same way, and I've found that it's a better notification system than the LED light. Haven't checked to see if it's killing my battery life yet.
Those are the two biggest pros/cons. The performance is better on the S5. even with stock TW. It's a faster processor and even more so once TW is removed. The screen is better too, with a higher brightness output and better speakers. Just overall better hardware.
But the S5 doesn't look as good or feel as good in hand as the X. You really notice how well designed the X is and how great it feels in hand with the subtle curve in the back and the quality build construction and material when you hold the S5 which is just a slab with rounded edges. But that's the same for a lot of devices, not just the S5.
And for the Pixel, similar to what happened to the 5x and 6p, they will probably come down in price in a few months. Also similar to last gen devices, there will be a lot of software updates in the next few months to work out all the issues with N and performance enhancements. I don't really see a reason to upgrade just yet. (especially when the S5 still holds up well)

for the g900f there is no locked bootloader.
for cm builds to be flashed on stock fw just use odin to flash twrp 3.0.0 then flash cm klte version, done.

Reasons for little Rom Development?

I'm about to buy a gently used Moto X Pure from Swappa and came here to see what's available as far as cistom roms. I'm kinda surprised by how little development is happening and was wondering if there is a particular reason. I broke my Moto G4 a week ago and its got quite a few Oreo Roms already. I'm not complaining just curious. There are a lot of roms I will miss but if there's no big obstacles in my way I may just try building my first rom here. I'm really excited for the Moto X Pure.

Let's see it was never a flagship. It is over 2 years old...I could go on..

Another reason I've realized that has not been mentioned, but even in the past as a newer device there wasn't as much development goin on as other premium devices. That reason is that when the Moto x pure was released, it was very optimized and a very stock Google Android device with a few extras from Moto that really enhanced the user experience. In other words it was a device that has no need for custom roms! And in my opinion with that being said and little things like stereo front facing speakers, was in the top 3 devices of that year! And still to this day after using the Moto z, and some other mid range Samsung devices, the pure still Rock's the house lol

Yeah I'm really excited about getting one. Since my Moto G4 broke I've been using my old Nexus 5 and havent had much luck breaking the chop chop habit. I have a 8 month old baby and its been insanely useful. Looking forward to the dual speakers too. Also excited to see one of my favorite roms Validus Oreo from GRZ being developed here for Moto X Pure.

It's 2018. But Moto X Pure still impress me everyday despite so many flagships out there.
1. The chop chop and twist twist gestures
2. The Stock Android with Moto experiences
3. The dual Stereo speaker
4. The great LCD (it's really good imo)
5. The phone design with curved back that fits nicely on hand, build quality and that unique Moto dimple design.
I'n still looking forward for future OREO or newer version of Android being developed for Moto X Pure (Style).

I'm completely with you, I did alot of research on Moto X Pure and have had a ton of phones over the years. In my head, I see myself being very satified with it. Nexus 6 was one of my favorites (except I didnt like the amoled screen and the huge size) and this phone reminds me what was good about it but without the stuff I didnt. Plus, since coming from a Moto G4, I found those exclusive Moto features very useful and handy. Also having the FM radio built in has been nice in certain circumstances.

Totally man it is 2018, and it's an older phone but the only thing that separates it from newer flagships is the battery, and the chipset! Yet I've always thought due to Moto's optimized software it offset any issues with the snapdragon808. That it performed with other 808's and even phones with the Snapdragon 810! The screen to buddy ratio is even today good, and then it was great! I was also happy to hear somebody give props to the ips lcd screen! I believe it's just as good as any AMOLED screen I've seen! And is way better in direct sunlight! I honestly have to say my favorite phone!!!

Chipset wise, nothing much you can do unless with third party custom ROM optimisation. Whereas for battery, you can replace it by buying it from online, and you will be back to the "new phone" days. Cuz' thats what I did to my X Pure battery
Talking about screen to body ratio, before the bezeless phone became trendy, Motorola started it first with the old RAZR M Phone. And not forgetting that Moto X's front is symmetrical and proportional from top to bottom. And most of the time, I would rather stick with Moto X Pure LCD screen cuz' of natural colors and the screen brightness. It's really bright and comfortable to look at!
Did I mention that, with all these great stuffs, yet Motorola sold it at an affordable price, not those overpriced pricing!

At what levels do you guys primarily keep your screen brightness set at? When I was on the Moto G4 I kept my screen set at about 50% brightness cause I was mainly indoors and full brightness was overkill.

30% or lesser for indoor (day). Because of the battery life.
0% for indoor (night) with bluelight filter.
50%-70% outdoor (under the sun) - usually will keep on adjusting to prevent from wasting the battery juice.

Brightness
I like to get get the most out of my battery, and truthfully this screen is bright as hell lol! So I usually have mine at 30-35%, and in the dark like 5-10%lol

I disagree with you on that one friend! It was Motorola's flagship device. The screen was flagship the processor although not the top dog was still Snapdragon 8** series, dual SIM, dual front firing speakers, 21mp camera etc. The list goes on lol the Moto x pure edition was a flagship device

Yeah! It was Motorola's flagship at that point of time. Moto X Pure edition was supposed to be using Snapdragon 810 processor. But... because of the heating issue, Motorola had no choice, so they had to use the Snapdragon 808 instead.

I'm heavily considering it but I have a lot of obligations so it wouldnt be something to hold your breathe for. Its something that requires alot of time and patience. Thats why I always say donate to your devs. It isnt easy. Time will tell though, I could use another hobby. Might make something just for me, who knows.

I'm with the No Need to crowd. I am rooted with Magisk and TWRPed. I always ROMed my phones to ditch the factory UI, overhead, and bloat. Other than GravityBox I am all stock. Plus it was cheap.

Why is there not more ROM development? Guess that question confuses me... there are lots of ROMs (and many not on XDA, some would argue the best ones are not here)
The question should be, why is there not NEW/CONTINUED ROM development? Because this device is pushing 2.5 years old, and it is not holding up well and many people are abandoning it. The battery life is pitiful, and the battery longevity is worse, and on top of that there is no good source for "new" batteries... Not to mention that replacing the battery often required more technical expertise than many users have, and they need more parts than they expect since replacing the battery often destroys the back of the phone and requires a new one as well.
For $200-$300 you can get a new device with 3-4 times the battery life, similar processing power, and a reasonable display and camera... It is easy to see why people have been flocking away from this device for a while now. Developers have a hard time supporting a device that doesn't have consistent user base, and with Nougat, Oreo, and newer Android OS's, it is getting more and more difficult to maintain as a developer.
Your "old" Moto G4 was actually newer than the Moto X Pure/Style by a full year, so it would still see development and has a fairly active user base, phones typically have a "development life" of around 2-2.5 years for custom ROMs, people just leave the device for something newer and developers move on. Plus I would bet the Moto G4 sold at least 10 times as many units as the Moto X Pure/Style. Honestly the Moto X Pure/Style bombed (sales wise) and sold only a fraction of the number of units Moto hoped for, which probably accounts for why there was no Moto X "2016" model while Moto scrapped the old X line and gave us the new X4 last year, which is a decent phone, but in my mind is no replacement worthy of the X line.
Don't get me wrong, it is (was) a great phone... I loved mine, the only real problem was the battery life and the heat throttling, and I couldn't be tethered to a charger 2-4 times every day.

The main reason I have rooted and rom'd is for customization. I have a large collection of paid Sub themes too. I've been ad free for over 7 years and I wont go back to the ads experience.

Would you happen to remember off hand where it was that you may have seen other builds? You could PM me as to not post to links of outside competitors. I have google searched with little hits, but I know alot of Moto G4 roms were posted directly on specific peoples Google Plus.

Simple Google search will suffice... Dirty Unicorns, Zypher OS and BrokenOS come to mind just off the top of my head. There is a thread here somewhere listing "off-XDA" ROMs.
