After seeing how well the Moto X performs, I have to wonder is there any real point in constantly making phones that use faster chips such as the snapdragon 600 or 800 when Motorola proves that they can do the same on a dual core S4? Or has the spec race always been pointless and only caters to the desire of the consumer to have the "best." I own both the Moto X and a Google edition HTC One, and despite how much "higher end" the One is, I feel like the Moto X is the better device. Will other manufacturers start doing what Motorola is doing with the deep software-hardware integration, or will they continue to rely on the most cutting edge hardware?
Current Devices: Moto X, HTC One Google Edition, Oppo Find 5
All Moto did was out together an almost bare bones stock phone and focus on what really matters and has high impact for most people. Granted, the motoX may not be for everyone, depending on whether they prefer a larger screen or perform heavier tasks that may be better handled with a quadcore cpu. But for the majority, motoX is about as clean as it gets to being pure stock Android without bloaty oem launchers or UI tweaks. It comes with just a few custom moto apps that people will actually use more than once compared to the gimmicky features that come. Things like gif creators or nfc bump file transfers are of no use to me. But something like active notifications and moto assist is something going I and most others can use everyday.
So to answer your question, spec race isn't over yet, but I think there will be rush from Samsung and HTC to try to close the gap and duplicate the moto apps. There definitely will be an increased emphasis on user experience from here on out as consumers start to realize that cutting edge specs doesn't always translate to best experience.

Truth be told the Moto X isn’t stock, it just has the stock UI on top of a relatively standard Motorola software build, but it does have a heck of a lot less of the operator preload crapware that normally shows up on Android phones sold with a subsidy these days.

this is the same conversation that happened with computers and clock speed/cores a few years ago. more cores and higher clock speeds come to a point of diminishing returns and optimization is necessary to grow performance at that point.
This won't stop the spec race.
When OEMs realize price is what will win the "war", not specs, we'll finally get somewhere.
Maybe its just me, but I dont get what people are doing with their phones that they need such high spec'ed devices. When I look at a device I look for snapiness, response, and overall usability. Most phones achieve this by optimizing their custom software on the device. Its not about the specs people, its about how you make the software to interact with the device specs. I love my Moto X, as a matter of fact, I took back my S4 Active for it. S4 active is so full of bloatware, it reminds me of my mothers computer everytie she asks me to fix it, it has at least 6-7 toolbars in IE, and you can barely search anything. Some options are great on devices like the S4, but when you stick to simplicity, things work way better. My Moto X has been invaluable to me so far in terms of battery life, and touchless controls. Yes I use them, while driving. Convenient and safe for me and my family.
Just my 2 cents...
Coming from the S4 Active and the HTC One before that I can honestly say that this is the best Android phone I've ever used. It is every bit as fast as those two, if not faster, but even smoother with absolutely zero lag. Couple the amazing performance with the perfect physical design and you've got the Android phone that all others aspired to be but fell short. Screw the spec war, what Motorola did with this phone is nothing short of outstanding. I feel like this is the smart phone I've always wanted. Now if only I can get this crappy battery life figured out...

Even if u put 8 cores (which they're doing) on a touchwiz phone, its still gonna be laggy in some areas! I had the One before this phone and that was much better but still had some hiccups! To my surprise, I haven't experienced any hiccups on the X yet but obviously having stock android helps a lot! Not a lot of the ram is being used up and correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't this phone use Motorola's new x8 core structure which is really awesome!

I think it compares to 'higher' end devices just fine. People are knocking it saying it's last year's specs but there was an article I read about the whole S4 pro/600 and there was a guy who is very knowledgeable when it comes to CPU's and he even said he is confused as to what makes a 600 a 600 and what makes a pro a pro. He said they are basically exactly the same from an architecture stand point. He even stated he thinks what makes a 600 a 600 and a pro a pro is the clock speed. I have the HTC One, the X and the Oppo Find 5. I'm pleasantly surprised how well the X runs. This phone is no slouch and I wouldn't consider it a mid range device. (I did consider it one before I owned one) don't get me wrong I still love my HTC one, I also love my find 5 but my X is my new love so she has been getting all the attention lately. Hehe

I recently sold my HTC one, and plan on returning my droid maxx once the moto x arrives. I love the way the x feels in hand. I'm going to miss the battery on the max though.
I think the processor is underrated and think motorola put out a great lone of phones this year and it will only lead to better phones in the future

The only time I could see this phone falling behind is if apps begin to fully utilize four cores, but to be honest, I'd take 2 high power cores over 4 low power cores any day. Sadly, the cores in the X aren't anything over the top and probably wouldn't out perform two of the cores from a snapdragon 800 (2.3ghz). I know on my desktop I have an AMD Athlon 64x4 @2.8ghz that performs about the same as my i5 2450m @2.5ghz (turbo and almost always at 3.1ghz). As soon as I get an application that can't utilize all 4 cores the performance is nearly halved when compared to the i5 and makes it seem like a dog. As I said though, it's no suprise that this phone performs as good or even better than "more powerful" devices. I mean, I just can't see flipping through home pages and what not requiring anything more than a decent dual core processor. Optimization is key, and throwing more cores at it won't help.
I suppose my Nexus 4 is no longer a high-end phone. But still, it is not that bad yet after having MOTO X, I hardly touch my N4 anymore for two major reasons: touchless control and the compact size of MOTO. The screen size is the same, but the phone size ain't. Additionally, N4, to me at least, has a wired headphone jack. MOTO X has it in the middle, much easier to hold.
And of course, the dimple
The only super major huge disappointment is the MOTO X's camera. Oh my goodness, magic tweak twice to wake up this crappy camera?
That said, X is more than enough to impress average consumers. It is definitely not for geeks and spec-lovers
I have a Xperia S and I am tempted to buy a moot x what do you think it's good idea? Does it worth it? I know that the camera of the MotoX takes "funeral mode" photos compared to the Xperia S
I saw that the performance it's great but I still don't know

I get no lag with any of my apps with the dual cores, even the store models and I noticed the other store models did struggle at times. Reminds me of when the HTC Vivid came out, as one of the first dual core phones....no one could use it to the full potential, so I think the Quad Cores should be better utilized in the next generation of phones, but Moto X has more than enough power right now.

No need to lie, the HTC One does hiccup at all.. With that said, I'm considering going to the X simply because of battery life. I just feel like I will miss the aluminum, front speakers and camera.
I got the Moto X and love it. Everything runs smooth and fliud all throughout the system and apps. I'm selling my HTC One and GE S4 but am getting a Dev edition One. I really hope Google and Motorola keep making phones like this and this is just the beginning.
I continue to hear only good things about the Moto X and I'm tempted to pick one up at the $350 sale price. I currently have a Droid DNA (which is on par with the 2013 flagships) running Sense 5 - it works well but has it's annoyances, however I don't know if it will actually be a good idea to upgrade from. My thoughts/concerns:
-Size: Going from a 5" 1080p screen to a 4.7" 720p screen is going to be a big change, especially since the Moto X screen is actually about 4.3" with the on screen buttons. However, I've found the DNA to be too big sometimes (especially with the power button on the top, it's my biggest annoyance) so I may like the slight downsize.
-Camera: The DNA takes great pictures, and I love the Sense 5 camera. The Moto X camera however sounds like its below average, so this would be a clear downgrade.
-Wireless Charging: Having a Nexus 7 and DNA I rarely plug anything in anymore. I've got 3 chargers between my house and office so this would be another adjustment with the Moto X.
-Root: I don't care abut an unlocked bootloader but I need root (TiBu, Greenify, Tasker). I wasn't planning on getting the DE (too late now anyways) but the hassles of getting root with each update worries me.
Those things are my biggest concerns. I'm very much interested in Moto X's software features and quick updates though (among other things). I've thought about just getting a Droid Maxx (keep the big screen and wireless charging) but not for $150 more and slower updates.
Also, I'm the kind of person that switches phones about every 6 months (buying/selling used usually). I get bored or I find something that annoys me about a device. The DNA's resale value is dropping real quick (from $300 a few months ago to just over $200 now) so the sooner I sell the better probably.
So, for anyone that's come from an S4, One, G2, etc - do you regret it? Can anyone sway me one way or another?
I came from an s4 and don't regret it in the least. Actually, I do miss the ir blaster a bit, but that's it.

I came from an S4 and G2. I honestly don't miss those devices. They're definitely powerhouses but the Moto X is just an all around better device...for me at least. The difference from 1080p to 720p isn't that noticeable since the ppi is still high on the X. If you compare both side by side and zoom in on stuff then yea you're bound to notice something. The camera is pretty good. You can check out the picture thread in this section to see some pics. I have the dev edition so rooting is easy but I'm sure the regular ones will be rootable with future updates especially if more devs get this device with the sale.

Im very happy with Moto X. I have had (this year) Note 2, Razr Maxx, SG4, HTC ONE and LG G2. Size and features are what did it for me.
I think the two biggest things that are likely to disappoint people coming from a flagship phone to the Moto X are going to be the camera (mediocre, especially in low-light settings) and the AMOLED display (extremely saturated, this is moreso going to be the case for people coming from LCD screens like the Nexus 5).
I came from a Nexus 4, to a Nexus 5 for almost a couple week, then to the Moto X. I am loving it so far. Like you, I've been so used to wireless charger and this is probably the only feature I kind of miss.
Size was actually one of the deciding factor for me. Nexus 5 was slightly too big for my taste. The size and the build quality makes this a really nice phone to use.
Camera is not so great on the Moto X, but is more than what I need. The Nexus lines never had great cameras, either. Not sure how it compares to a DNA.
Ultimately for me, active notification and Moto Maker are the features that make me switch to Moto X. Maybe it should for you, too?
I bought a DE yesterday and I currently have a One. I am anxious to see as well as the One can sometimes be too large for my liking especially with the power button on top. I am thinking the screen and the aluminum body are going to be the only things I miss - the dev support on the One has been great lately too though.
I came from a Note 3, and the software on the X is just so much better. I always feel like I'm using Gingerbread when I use Touchwiz, but the X is a very nice 4.2.2 experience. The Active Notifications are wonderful as well!
I think the thing to remember about the X, is that you must look past the hardware. Its hardware really isn't great, but the software is like a testbed of all of Google's neat ideas that they didn't want to test in the Nexus line.
I ordered one of the VZW developer versions yesterday, and I am excited to switch from my GS3. However, I do hope development picks up after this sale because I can't seem to find much for this phone.
But rest assured that out of the box, due to the AOSP nature of the phone, it will feel smooth and speedy compared to many other flagship phones.

I am kinda of afraid to switch from s4. I am on custom ROM 4.3 and kernel with all the goodies and tweaked screen colors to my liking. Camera quality is obviously good, screen is near perfect, some development in forum, battery is very good on S4, everything works with 0 bugs.
I like moto x design and feel, don't care about specs, but I do care about those too blue or too yellow screens and as well as camera quality. Some photos I've seen at link above of moto x are horrible.
I came to the X from Nexus 4/5 because of the common sense design, and I am hopeful the industry takes note of its success. It seems most phones are going out of their way to employ technology solutions that are looking for a problem.
Design the phone to fit your hand, duh! Ever picked up a Samsung device?
We pull these out and turn them on a hundred times a day... one button at the top right to do this is silly. And voice commands are great, but if you have to pull out your phone and turn it on to execute them... well, you get my point.
And while we should all keep phones locked when out and about, having to always enter your pin is tiresome. Kudos to Apple fingerprint scanner, but trusted Bluetooth and nfc is even more convenient.
And I don't use my phone for photography... I have an slr around my neck when I want to take pictures. To me, phone cams are for capturing a moment you weren't planning on, and hence need to do it as quickly as possible.
These are the common sense issues the Moto X addresses that other phones don't. Hopefully the X2 will address even more.
Yes, I will miss some aspects of the Nexus 5, but I don't use any of those a dozen times a day. Wireless charging is probably the most missed. I am done with the spec race, and want a phone that works better.
While you can have a cool titanium and composite hammer, if it is not weighted effectively for the task of driving nails, it's of less use than an old steel one.
I came from a G2 and before that a S4. I don't miss the S4 one bit, I do like the G2 like its knock knock feature and its form factor is nice (big yeti hands). But other than that I don't miss either of the phones over the Moto X. I will be ordering a Moto X DE today or on the 9th so my wife can get the Moto X I currently have and I get a DE device. She is currently using the S4 and before that she and I were GNex users. She is liking the S4 but she was instantly drawn to the Moto X the evening I picked it up from the VZW store.
The display on the S4 was nice to me. The G2 is just plain sexy and blew away the S4 IMO. The Moto X screen is nothing to laugh at. I do like the G2 display over the Moto X but not enough to make it a show stopper.
The form factor of the S4 was not bad, the size was not a factor with it, the same with the G2. I did like the G2 over the S4 as it felt not as cheap. The Moto X form factor and build quality puts Samsung and LG to shame. The Moto X feels solid, they went back to their roots on this one. Makes me feel like I got the awesomeness of the Droid 1 and the Droid X and not the joke quality of the Bionic. I am not afraid of the Moto X might break when I hold it like I did the S4.
Speed wise.. The S4 blew my GNex out of the water, very fast and once I put CleanROM, Eclipse, or CM 10.2 on it the slight home stutter of the horrible TouchWiz launcher was gone. The G2 to me made the S4 feel sluggish and just not as spunky as it should be. With the G2 I am pretty much stock of the factory software but I did root it to debloat it and to also use G2 Xposed on it for the proper button placement that I like.
The Moto X is holding its own and I feel it is able to run against the G2 with everything I do in a days time. It is also able to do the gaming I like with no issues what so ever. Now if you do testing and all that then you will not see any of this based on those numbers. But if you actually use the device you will see it is not an issue.
The camera on the Moto X compared to the S4 is good. Comparing it to the stock camera on the G2 I feel the Moto X beats the hell out of it. Now with the Camera MODs for the G2 that are out then I will say the G2 is better way better. Comparing the Moto X camera to the N4 and I feel the N4 is better. But to be honest if I want a good picture then I will ask my wife to use her DSLR camera and take the picture for me. but for a camera phone it works. My smartphone camera-fu is not as strong as most but I might as well not even enter the race if you want me to talk camera with you. But for a typical user I can take a good picture and it does its job. Compare my camera shots to my wife camera shots using the same hardware and she beats me every time. Her take on the smartphone cameras are they are good for when you need a quick pic here and there but she prefers to take pictures with her DSLR camera over anything else.
You will not miss your phone when you switch to the Moto X. I am loving the near stock of Android on this device and I do like some of the features from Moto like the assist, trusted devices, active notifications, and the Motorola connect which replaced airdroid for me. Motorola is back to doing things right so far with the Moto X. Battery life is great with the Moto X as I am a pretty heavy data user with streaming media, web browsing, XDA, Reddit. I do about 10-60+ minutes of calls a day along with checking multiple gmail/email accounts. Screen is on 2+ hours everyday and I can go a full day on one charge and have just a pinch left over. With the GNex it was only possible with 3 extra batteries or a plug. The S4 could almost last the day but needed some power loving during lunch. The G2 could last till I got into the car and plug it in at the end of the day for me. The Moto X as I stated does last through my work day without the need of a charger near me as long as I don't go over a 12 hour work day with 2-3 hours in the car for driving to and from work. I am going to pick up one of the Moto battery packs as it is slim and doesnt take up a lot of room for those few days I go past 12hours.
Sorry for the wall of text but hope this helps you out.
Thanks for the responses everyone. I'm going to stop by the Verizon store today to play with one but I'm thinking I'll just try and get one tomorrow during the sale. If for some reason I really don't like it, I can always return it or sell it for near cost. Kind of makes me wish I got the DE yesterday so I wouldn't have any root worries, but I don't need the extra 16GB and I'm looking forward to having a custom designed phone. The community has always prevailed anyways.
@Ainvar thanks
although i am surprised you say N4 camera was better then Moto X, I tought N4 wasn't good at all compared to S4. I am not a fan of taking pictures with phone, but all my N4 pictures went straight to trash while some S4 pictures are keepers for sure.
I'd say the Moto X camera is between the N4 and N5 personally. Moto X camera is inconsistent and produces more grainier photos than N5 in my usage.
here is more camera comparison. (note: s4 with google camera, not TW)

i really think part of the reason there's less development is that the phone is nearly perfect out of the box. I got my dev x before any sales and was looking for any reason to return it and couldn't find any
Well I just found out touchless controls don't work if you use a lock pattern or pin. So that's kind of a bummer. But I really liked how the phone felt in the store, and with free returns its pretty much a no risk chance to try it for 2 weeks.
Came from a DNA myself and an very pleased with my X. I'm already looking forward to a second-generation model. That said, the only thing I miss from my DNA was the burst mode picture capture which is replicated in this phone's software but not implemented as well.
I can from a DNA and a LG G2 and honestly, the only thing I really miss is the wireless charging. I still use my DNA from time to time (recently giving it to my bro since he broke his windows phone) and the screen is giant compared the moto x but for day to day use, its not noticeable.
I am starting this discussion for all the Moto X fans out there to have a say about their favorite features, the features they want and the features they would like changed (or changed back)
The main motivation on my judgement on features below is that I am considering the Moto X to be the most user friendly daily driver. All round phone that is not specialized, does everything well and nothing exceptionally great. Especially for the urban lifestyle (some may call it plastic or tin canned).
Size
The best thing I like about the 2013 Moto X is the 4.7 inch display, this gave the 2013 Moto X the reputation of the best one hand operated phone experience back at 2013 and I believe it should stay, 4.7 to 5 inch is perfect size.
It can also grow in size as different people would like different thing, but in my opinion to keep the one hand operation miracle alive, Motorola needs to keep a version of Moto X with 4.7-5 inch
Screen resolution
I am very happy with the 720, especially that the full HD screen eats up battery. I don't see any benefit of having HD display, even for media or gaming. Battery life is a crucial factor compared to minimal media quality.
Let's face it, media high quality is a nice option on tablet or a bigger device, watching media on the phone for most people (as I have noticed) is when you're waiting for the doctors at the clinic (who don't really know what the word appointment means) or on the bus etc. If I want to watch a video and enjoy it in high quality, I would watch it on a tablet or a laptop, or using my Moto X to cast it to a higher resolution device.
Battery life
Now we're talking, battery life is one of the most important features of the 2013 Moto X and I would give up a lot to keep it lasting a day at least, I would like Motorola to work on it, make it better. Along with the screen size, battery life has motivated me big time to buy the Moto X.
Wireless charging
A nice feature that would make the experience using Moto X even better, however not necessary, I got used to carrying a charger with me, or a decent power-bank, so while wireless charging can help on the work desk or at home, it's almost useless for people on the move (like myself) especially that it takes much longer to fully charge the phone
Touchless controls
Here is one of the best features I have ever seen in a phone. Really, well done Motorola. The ways to enhance this was already implemented on the new one, by customizing the trigger phrase, Motorola has shown it cares/listens to customers. Also the fact that the command list is expanding to cover more than Google voice.
If Motorola want to perfect this, they can allow other apps to use the Touchless controls by providing SDKs to third-parties (or a similar technique).
Enhancing experience and reducing time for repeated tasks
Shake to open camera, NFC accessories, Bluetooth trusted devices unlock are the main features allowing this.
The Motorola Skip is great, keep providing ways to address user frustration points, and time consuming repeated tasks (such as unlocking phone.) This phone addresses the most critical time consuming repeated tasks correctly. Motorola, we want more of those please.
Can you guys think of anything else other than Camera, unlock phone as repeated time consuming tasks? Let me (and Motorola) know.
SD slot
One of the features I wish Moto X had is an expandable memory, I have replaced most of the devices I use with Moto X and that's supposed to be the idea. Replacing alarm, car GPS, Camera mp3 player and more. This is a feature that I would love for Motorola to consider. Many people like myself have a big music library and it's a shame that a great device like the Moto X lacks this.
Camera
The Camera in the Moto X isn't that great, we all know that. Even the 2014 Moto X doesn't have a good one, but I can live with that, camera is not of a great significance to me, and for a all-round device it should not be a great camera. In conclusion, the camera there is sufficient
Style.
The Moto Maker is great, however it has a limitation, the design of the phone itself can enchance or kill the Moto Maker customization. I personally prefer the 2013 Moto X style better than the new one.
Water/Weather Proofing
The Moto X is supposed to be Nano-coated, so it's water proof to a degree, the touch screen cannot be used under water or under rain (even a few drops.) The urban lifestyle is all about being fit, sporty and outdoors. A proper water/weather proofing would be a great feature to consider
Price
No need to say anything here. It's reasonably priced for most parts of the world.
Everyday repeated tasks handling
This is where the Moto X product line excels. Here is a list of the features we love and notes about how to enhance them:
Touchless control: Great! I have already discussed this above.
Assist: I love it, especially for driving mode, however, Motorola needs to consider more ways to trigger the mode. I don't like the driving mode automatically on when on the bus or in a car which I am not driving. Triggering on only when connected to a specific bluetooth device can make this specific to my car which will be great. There are more ways to enhance this as well, please share your opinion.
Skip: I love skip unlock, even though some people lose it a lot, but it's only $10, which makes it easily replaced when lost.
Trusted devices: needs some work, you need to unlock the device once before the trusted device unlock work, very useful when in the car.
Shaking the phone for camera: no complains there, works great, and very useful indeed.
Notifications: Adding the feature to view multiple notifications when the phone is locked for the 2014 version is the update we were looking for.
The old 2013 Moto X should have the software features updates as per:

How to get 2014 Moto X MotoVoice on a 4.4.4 android 2013 Moto X

I would like the new features but I don't care for the white/light blue touchless control screen.. I prefer the black/dark and amoled battery saving version that we have currently.

I think I will probably start a thread about the Moto X features old/new and what users are expecting in the next one
Isn't this such a thread
Dont forget about the moto actions features that let you silence incoming calls with a wave. On the new X it uses the ir sensors to detect movement but i feel like our proximity sensor could do the job just fine. There is a mod that ports these over unofficially but an offcial update would be nice. It would definitely let me know, as a motorola customer, they value me and my investment in their product. Which in turn would really bump up my overall experience with their product and would give them a leg up when it comes time for me to consider who to turn to for a new device.

Far as i know that "port" is only partially working and pretty unstable. I will wait for moto to release it officially or for the people working on the port to get a little more polish on their product

You are correct. And that's exactly why I'm not using it either. Rather get the official thing.

Well, this is more about the old Moto x. I will post another to discuss the features of the Moto X product like in general. What we like/dislike/want.

I have a question about that ir sensor. What sensor does the moto x have for active display ? If I put my hand over the phone without touching it, active display comes up.

It's a proximity sensor on the old moto x. It detects if something is in front of it or not. The ir sensor is different and there's 4 of them as opposed to our 1 proximity sensor. Those are used in the new moto x for facial listening (the screen won't turn off if you're looking at it) and moto actions like activating moto display and silencing an incoming phone call.

Trust me it's different. This thread is discussing only one aspect mentioned there. Take a look:
Moto X product line specs and features feedback
The mod for the 2014 features is working for me except for wave to silence and three notifications in activate display. I've had a custom launch phrase for about a month.

Can you please provide a link to the mod? Thanks.
Also does anybody know of any other mods, apps that will add the 2014 Moto software features on the 2013?

I believe I flashed the zip in the OP. Only for 4.4.4
Rooted Stock Moto X running AT&T 4.4.4 on XT1058 "Listen Up, Moto X!"
I met Punit Soni last night and he confirmed to me once again that some of the New moto x features will come to the old one. I believe he was referring to the 3 active notification thing and the customizable phrase. Don't know about anything else ( these are just simple software updates ).
I took a look at the Droid product line, which got my attention especially that the Droid Turbo is coming out soon. I love the battery life and wireless charging, but it's as ugly as the New Moto X. Not to mention that I cannot have it anyway as I am (like most most people outside the us) not a Verizon customer.
So I'm coming down to Battle Royale between the 6P and the Motorola X Style/Pure or Force... and it's the way my phone is used (or, more to the point, unused!) for much of the day which might decide the winner.
My current phone (HTC One M7) spends a very large part of the day sitting on my desk. When the notification light starts blinking I unlock it from the power button and look at the lock screen's notifications.
I'm therefore attracted to the Motorola's "wave your hand over the phone" motion detector to view notifications, and rather put off the 6P by the thought of having to pick the phone off the desk and use the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner to unlock the phone.
What's the deal in real life? Would I still be able to see stuff on the lock screen without fingerprint scanning? Would I just switch that off?
I use the elementalx kernel and it includes a sweep to wake function. If I swipe the screen it will show me notifications without unlocking. I had the pure edition (2014) and I find the S2W more reliable. Hope this helps.
With ambient display on, notifications flash on lockscren then just touch screen to unlock if you want. Or you could go custom kernel route and enablecwake gestures.
My phone sits on my desk a lot at work and I have no problems with reading messages etc without having to pick it up.
I came from the previous two generations of the Moto X, and I'm glad I transitioned to the 6P.
Moto display is awesome, especially being able to wave your hand to activate notifications. I have Ambient Display (AD) on, and while it's decent, Moto display is clearly a better implementation of the idea. Not going to split hairs about that one.
That said, if you're coming from another device where you're used to pressing the wake button, anyway, then I'd personally lean towards the 6P. AD is still functional, and as others have said you *can* root for the additional features (it is a Nexus), but trumping them all is the finger scanner, which adds unrivaled utility. No need to switch it off, as it doesn't hinder your ability to use the phone as you always have. If laying on your desk, just punch in your password or speak to your phone...and you'll always be able to see your notifications, so long as you configure the lockscreen to do so.
I'm not sure what they're looking like these days, but there are also apps which mimic Moto display in Google Play to pretty decent effect. I used them side-by-side when I had my 2014 Moto X and they were pretty solid (though still not as good as the baked-in feature). In other words, you'd really have to be super intrigued by the Moto X features to go that way, IMO. I can reliably have 80-90% of what my old device offers, while enjoying the full range of benefits from Google's latest and greatest.

Thanks for the info. So it certainly sounds like the fingerprint scanning is a non-issue - good stuff
Whilst I've got your attention, maybe I can throw an extra clown into the thought-circus...?
Here are my criteria for my HTC One replacement:
Stock Android, or damned close
Larger screen preferable
Screen readable in sunlight
Good loudspeaker (for listening to podcasts mostly, but also music and video)
Good call quality
Able to hold on to weak / variable signal
Decent battery life
Decent camera
Water resistance, dust resistance, shock resistance all useful
Build quality and appearance don't matter so much, I'll probably keep it inside a wallet case.
Outright performance won't matter too much - I don't tend to play games but I do like smooth scrolling, stutter-free video playback and fast web page loading!
How do you find the 6P stacking up against those criteria, and how does your experience of Motorolas fare too?

Stock Android, or damned close ITS A NEXUS
Larger screen preferable IT'S BIG BUT HOLDABLE
Screen readable in sunlight DECENT - BUT NOT AS GOOD AS A NOTE 5
Good loudspeaker (for listening to podcasts mostly, but also music and video) GETS NICE AN LOUD
Good call quality SEEMS GOOD SO FAR
Able to hold on to weak / variable signal YMMV
Decent battery life DOZE, 'NUFF SAID
Decent camera A SMIDGE BELOW THE NOTE 5, NO OIS, SOME GREAT PHOTOS, VIDEO A LITTLE SHAKY
Water resistance, dust resistance, shock resistance all useful GET A CASE!

At least for me, the 6P clears the bulk of that criteria quite easily-- stock as can be, bigger display by a full inch, loud stereo speakers, good color accuracy and brightness (can also go very dim, if that matters), big battery w/rapid charging (USB C), and great camera. My Moto experience has also generally been good, but I haven't played with the newest, so I can't offer too much, there. That said, I'd still have to stand by what I stated before, regarding the features. Overall, I think it's a really good year for Android flagships and a person would be hard-pressed to find serious flaws with any of the top devices.
The only two criteria I won't definitively speak on are call quality and holding signal. I've been totally fine with both, but I also don't talk much on my phones and signal depends on a number of factors, including the carrier and area. With every phone I've owned, I could manipulate both of these entirely too much, to say one device was outright better than the other. But again, I've had a fine experience and no complaints, in general.
For me, the choice really did come down to the finger scanner. The 6P has it and it's outstanding. Unfortunately, Motorola dropped the ball in this area and it's not something you can add through software, the way I can with their features. By the time you factor in updates (Moto has been lagging, here), I think the 6P is clearly the better device.
I'm coming from a HTC One M7 as well.
All I can say is:
...
DO. IT. ?
Ah, one thing about the speakers: They are great! But personally I think that the ones of the HTC One M7 were a tiny bit better, but still, the speakers of the Nexus 6P are really nice.
Guys, thanks for all the replies, very helpful....
I'm definitely swaying in favour of the 6P because of the stereo speakers, I would miss those after the excellent ones on the One M7
But I still can't quite pull the trigger, and I'm not sure why.
Maybe it's because I found out about the Force's wireless charging, and that's a cool feature I've never had before.
Maybe I do really fancy that 'wave the hand over the phone' function.
Maybe, after dropping my guitar in a car park today, I feel the need for the shatterproof screen :/
More lilkely it's because I don't want to bin my HTC yet. It seems to be going bananas recently, always stalling when I need to use it most... google maps navigation went completely berzerk today when I was late for an appointment and I nearly threw it out the window in frustration, but yet it ought to still have some life left in it! And it has been a great phone.
I shall go to the phone shops tomorrow and get them both in my hands... I'm sure buttery smooth newness will tip me over the edge, one way or another!

Moto G7+ after 2 weeks (long general post)
(moderator- please let me know if this is not the proper location for this kind of post)
The Moto G7+ takes advantage of major improvements that have been made over recent years in major flagship phones and is able to leverage a good chunk of that technology at a much lower price. At the same time it's not marketed to the people that would necessarily buy a flagship phone, so it still contains certain features that you would more likely find in a mid-range phone, such as a headphone jack.
I have using the Moto G7+ for about 2 weeks, and I am impressed with it. Previous to that I used a Sony compact phone since late 2017. Needless to say, the size of the G7+ took a bit of getting used to, and I find I occasionally miss the ability to do simple things easily with one hand.
A few things I’ve noticed:
The G7+ has very good speakers (i.e. loud and not tinny or distorted). One is front-facing, and the other, louder one is at the bottom, so in typical use they balance pretty well.
The screen is bright enough with good viewing angles.
I’ve only tried the camera a bit but it seems like it works pretty well and is very quick to focus. If it can actually take pictures of people in average interior light without making a total blurry or noisy mess of things, I'll be impressed! In particular, the zoom function is very smooth, and even at high zoom the results are nowhere near as *blocky* as what my previous phones have often produced. The camera interface is simple, with a ring you can move on the screen to specify subject for autofocus/exposure. I've gotten best results leaving HDR on *auto* or always on.
I have not had any problems with battery lasting the whole day, but then again I'm someone who most of the time is able to top it up at various different points during the day. As a result it probably never gets below 50% or so. If I find myself in a situation where I would not be able to charge the phone from an outlet, I would probably take along a small cell charger until I know how the phone would fare in such a situation. By the way, I have not yet even tried once the 27 watt charger that comes with the phone, as I have no reason to charge that quickly, and I'm suspicious that charging that rapidly is going to be bad for the battery itself.
The phone's ability to connect to the various different Bluetooth devices I have is very good. Occasionally, on re-connection, the Bluetooth receiver in my car gets its data scrambled so that the file data, such as time played and time remaining, is inaccurate or missing. But that happens on occasion with just about any phone I’ve tried.
Using Chromecast, I haven't encountered so much as a skip or a dropout. Yay!
As appears to be common to many phones, there is only a single volume slider for both ring and notification volume in the settings- you can't adjust them separately. But, seemingly only on this Moto phone (that I know of), there seems to be a limiter on *only* the notification volume.
I can set the volume of the notification/ring in the Settings, but, *in actual use*, the notification tone (but not the ring tone) is much quieter, about half of what it should be. Weird.
In general, I miss the ability to adjust all volumes without going into the Settings - that seems to be new to Android Pie, and not just the G7+.
I do wish that there was an LED notification lamp.
The remaining battery charge percentage is shown in an extremely tiny icon (I think it’s just the usual system modification previously made available under Developer Options), and it would be better if the number were shown by itself elsewhere on the status bar (which is largely empty to the left of the notch). I know that I could use the peek/glance screen, but I found that it activated at odd times, unexpectedly, which became a distraction. So I disabled it.
In general, the G7+ is the first Motorola phone that I have been motivated to try since using the Moto X Pure/Style of 2015, one of my old favorites. The G7+ is much faster, has a better camera, newer software (Android 9 with January 2019 security), and has comparable speakers.

[I'm not a mod but the 'Guides, News & Discussion' forum would also be a good place to post this, but here seems ok too]
Thanks for the feedback & good luck with your new G7 Plus. Which model/channel is it? Mine is an 'international' XT1965-2 model purchased on Amazon US but came with Retla channel firmware.
I also had (still have but don't use) the Moto X Pure Edition/Style, which was sold as a low-priced flagship and had some nice features but pretty poor battery life. Then I had a Moto G5 Plus for 2 yrs which was much better with still very good performance, just a great mid-range phone. My G7 Plus seems like a nice current upgrade to that model with the best battery life of all, with similar usage I'm getting around 1.5 days with ~7 hrs of SOT.
(Portrait/night sight) Google Camera Port Fully Working!
You might want to check out the Google camera in that thread here, it's better than the stock Moto camera imo. Using the custom configuration script provided (see instructions in OP) I'm reliably getting the best shots under varied conditions of any phone I've had.
FWIW, mine is also the XT1965-2 with the retla software channel (retla = localized firmware version?).
As an addition, I've noticed the WiFi to be better than my recent phones, having a greater range (distance) of usable reception. No dropped calls so far, and, needless to say, the speakerphone function is excellent.
Thanks for the Google Camera reference; will keep that in mind for use in the future.
BTW, my wife still uses her Moto X Pure, and has no complaints.

Yeah, I believe Retla is for the Latin American market but some regions have more than one channel. Since the G7+ wasn't released in the US I figure that's the model Amazon US is getting to sell here, and others say that's what they got too. A site called lolinet has all the official firmware by channel for our G7+ (codename = lake) if you ever need it:
https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/lake/official/
I've fastboot flashed a later firmware from the 'Retail' channel with the January security patch (Retla still on Dec) which works just as well with no issues. Also there's a way to root using Magisk without TWRP (which we don't have yet but it may be close) by patching the boot.img from your channel's firmware (both Retla & Retail have worked for me), we just can't do backups or other things done within TWRP but having root is still very nice.
