Installed a Gobi 3000 WWAN card (MC8355 60Y3257) purchased from eBay, into a ThinkPad Tablet 183822U. I can not get past the stage after the 'Activate Device' and then selecting the carrier. AT&T.
I went by AT&T store. They said I needed a separate tablet plan and sim card. Done. But when trying to activate/etc the IMEI value is 'Unknown' and no one there could further the progress.
There is obviously some success because when the card is not installed there is not a 'Mobile networks' option. So I checked if the antenna clips weren't firmly planted. Everything seems snug and the red cable is plugged into 'MAIN' and blue to 'AUX.'
Went to the service parts docs: support dot lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd015893 & noticed for Gobi 3000 the model numbers state 1838-CT0, 29x, 2Ax, 4Px, 4Qx, 4Rx are supported.
My understanding is the 183822U fit into the 2Ax category?
If so does that mean most likely a deffective WWAN card?
A few other details...After installing the WWAN card all the Icons on the home screen are erased, even after adding new ones and even after removing the WWAN card and two restarts.
In the About Tablet - Status - Signal strength is at 0 dBm 99asu
My plan was to purchase the other model ( F5521GW) that is said to be compatible sometime tomorrow if any one can't provide another solution.
Please ask any questions/suggestions/etc.
Thanks for your time.

I have 2 SIMS on Cingular. Is there anyway to show the phone number active on the today screen? This would help quickly identify which SIM is active. I've been looking without success. Thanks!
There are a few products that allow you to have 2 simcards in a phone ( you have to cute the little chip part out on both sims and put them in an adapter) I have heard that you usually get a pop-up on the phone saying what sim card to you want to use.
its something I am looking in to after I found out that T-moible allows you to get prepaid wifi/t-zones. I would get a tmoible prepaid and use it with my phone (cingular) but I dont know if I will be able to switch back and forth ( I know it requires a restart to switch)
there are alot of adapters that can be used to switch the SIMS. but what i am looking for is a program that shows the SIM phone number on the today screen to show me exactly which SIM is active.
SIM manager (in programs), can show you the number, but i have to load it each time. pain in arse. i just want to see it on the front page. any program that can do this?
there is a program called WIVIT that shows the number, but it doesn't work on WM5
i found a french site that may help ( use your fav translator)

cant the owner info built in today thingy show the phone number? would that work?
What is the differences between A500 and A501 ?
Basically the only difference is the support for a 3g sim card for the A501. Note that this does not act the same as a mobile phone's 3g support. As in you cannot make calls. But rather, it is used specifically for data transfer when Wifi is not available.
Also, if your provider allows, you can send sms.

Now, when I got my iconia last week I peeled a sticker off the back and uncovered a Sim slot... Haven't tried putting one in yet, but I do occasionally see a "please insert Sim card" message on my home screen.... is it simply cosmetic on the a500?

As said many times, yes. Put a simcard in there and you'll lose it inside the tab.
Hi!
After a friend of mine dropped my Atrix, I'm having severe troubles getting it to run properly again. Main issue is that the SIM is not being recognized any more - I'm not prompted to enter a PIN, can make "Emergency Calls Only", and if I try to connecto to a provider manually, it tells me my SIM does not support it. The Antenna works fine, however, and the SIM works in another phone; also, a friend's SIM wouldn't work in mine.
There is very little external damage to the phone, and the drop was just about 1m onto stone, so I'm hesitant to believe the SIM connector broke. Is there any way I can be sure, i.e. would the pins on the connector have to have a certain voltage to them I could measure or similar?
Unfortunately, the phone has no warranty, as it was a pre-release gift from a Moto employee, so I can't just take it to a store and have it checked for free. (If any German can tell me: Is this expensive at all?)
Thanks for any advice!
David
Most likely the SIM is just not seating properly. Can you insert the SIM and keep pressure on it so it maintains contact while you power up? Your SIM should be fairly tight when inserted, and not move. Could be a contact problem now after dropping. The Atrix did have an issue with SIMS at release but I think this was more people not inserting the SIM correctly than an actual phone problem.
Nope, nothing. Still no service.
Sounds like the connector may have broken or come loose then.
And there is nothing I can do to check if this is the case or not?
Can't find anything. The following may help if you decide to strip it down to check for anything obvious:

I purchased (what I think) a US dual-SIM version of this phone for a senior from a local vendor, Canada Computers.
I'd like to have this phone set-up with one of the SIMs for calling-only from one carrier and the other SIM for internet Data-only from another carrier as this is the most cost-effective means given this persons overall phone usage and the plans that are available to them.
I have however come across a few references that the second SIM isn't a "true" SIM slot and that this phone can't be set-up in this manner,
Can anyone confirm that the above set-up should work? I haven't opened the box yet and might return it if it isn't possible.

It seems that Canada Computers has acquired a large stock of these phones and is selling them for CDN $139. The question is: Where did they come from?
There is a version of this phone that was customized for the Bell network and sold by PC Mobile and Lucky Mobile. On that version the second slot works only with a microSD card; the SIM function is disabled.
PC Mobile and Lucky Mobile have discontinued selling that phone and perhaps Canada Computers has bought their remaining stock.
If you post a picture of the label on the back of the box (or maybe the UPC is enough) maybe someone on this forum can tell you if you have that version.
Thanks qzjxk - wasn't aware that Bell had dual SIM versions blocked. I'll post a pic when I get home.
Noticed the description on Canada Computers website itself is quite vague:
Not one but two
With two SIM card slots, the Axon 7 Mini travels with you to wherever the world wants to take you. Capture your entire journey with the 128GB MicroSD card slot, providing expandable memory whenever you need it.
Hi All
I'm looking for some help please!
I have fitted a Chinese Android Head Unit to my car. I have a 4G/Wi-Fi modem into which I have fitted an O2 Pay-as-You-Go SIM Card. The SIM card connects to the HU by USB, but rather oddly the modem uses Wi-Fi to connect to the Head Unit (for some reason not using the faster and more reliable USB, but that's not the question).
So, I can connect to the Internet and use up the time on the SIM card - that's all OK, but, O2 will only top up the card or tell me the outstanding credit if I answer a text message that they send to the SIM card - which of course has no idea what to do with a text as it isn't in a mobile phone. Their security question is "what is your most dialled number ?" - but I don't ever dial out. So I have to top up blind by going to the O2 shop and handing over cash!
The 4G/Wi-Fi modem is now in the cars roof column so not easy to get at!
Do you have any suggestions as to how I can top-up? My ideas were:
a) Find an app that turns the Head Unit into a mobile phone that can receive and make texts
b) I know that the 4G/Wi-Fi modems you plug into laptops come with software that allow the provider to connect directly (without texts). Is there one of these for Android?
Hopefully I am just not looking in the right places - I don't want any solution to involve my mobile phone as the idea is that my car can support me if I lose my phone.
Cheers
James
Well.. I just googled "02 sim top up"
seems like auto-top up is a thing. and it seems that you can install a "my o2" app, on the headunit or phone, and see the balance on there..
maybe have to put the sim in another device to get a text to link it to a account or something.
Hi pafo42
That was easy - thanks, I'll give it a try.
I did go on line to O2 and consulted two of their 'Gurus' on different occasions. Suffice it to say they were completely useless. Well I'm assuming that they are Gurus in the sense of an authorititve teacher, but I guess they are Gurus in the sense of being Hindu Spiritual Leaders and so have no particular knowledge of Mobiles and Android, etc.
It will be interesting to see if my Head Unit comes up with the same display as a phone - not sure about the fingerprint part either but it is an avenue to explore.
I also searched Google play for an app but I guess I failed there!
Cheers
James
