[Q] Screen turning black on calls - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Randomly when I'm in a call regardless if that's skype or a regular phone call when I go to do something else on my phone it turns to a black screen and almost immediately changes back. Rinse and repeat. Can someone help me fix this issue? Thanks.

did you check in the menu Settings > Call > Turn off screen during calls?

..

How would I do that? And to the first post, it is off.

..

No need to be an asshole about it. I did look in the settings menu, obviously I couldn't find it. I've searched through the forums as well on google. Maybe I'm not seeing it but the only thing I've found is something through ABD and I'm not currently rooted.

Did you install any app that may interfere with the sensor? E.g. Smart Cover app...?

I did not.

Still having this issue. Screen flickers. Mostly on skype.

Annoying Auto LCD Turn Off While Making Call

Hi all, I absolutely love the HD2. However, I find one really annoying problem about the "auto LCD shut off between dialing and after a call is connected, and this has been really driving me crazy! I'm not sure why no one has mentioned about this, is it because it is my problem of mis-using it or no one has bothered to voice it up?? I apologized if this has been posted but I couldn't find one solution so far.
It is about the auto LCD shut off sensor feature while making a call. My English is not that good, my mother tongue is Chinese, I will try my best to describe the problem written in English. I've tried so many cooked roms, all have the same old frustrating issue. After when I've dialed a number, as most ppl do, I will put the phone near my ear while waiting for the call to get connected. However, in the process while making the call while the phone is near my ear, the LCD will shut off by itself, and when a call is connected, the annoying issue will occur! When a call is connected, the LCD will turn back on by itself even though the phone is still in tack with the ear, as a result, part of our face will make contact on the screen and very often pressing one of the on-screen buttons! Also, it is not only this problem will happen after a call is connected, during a process of calling or during a conversation, if there is a notification prompted out, for example, a sms have been received, or a email has been received or low battery notification, the LCD will always turn back on and make the face accidentally press on one of the on-screen button, this is really annoying, is there a solution to let the sensor shut off the LCD for good until the phone has really get away from the ear and the face???
It's not a problem
It's an advantage
HTC did that to prevent you from touching anything with your ear and you cheek and maybe without this you could end the call accidentally or lunching apps so and so .....
Some people have found that this happens when their screen protector is too close or covering the sensor. Cutting away a small ammount of the screen protector to make sure it doesn't interfere with the sensor seems to be the answer.
Not sure you have read his question correctly - it turns off when he puts it to his head, which he wants, but then it turns back on again when the call connects.
I have the same problem, (incidentally had the same problem with a Diamond and Omnia II with Tachi phone canvas). Only solution was to breifly move it away from your head and back again, which I just got used to.
No idea how to solve it though. Sorry.
[APP] Proximity Sensor for Screen Off v0.2
Maybe you should look for this little app, it could work for you.
I can't post links, so make a search inside xda, there's a topic with that title.....

[Q] Turn on & off Screen during call?

Hi there!
Sure it's easy to fix this problem of mine but I just did not find the way.
If I make a call, the screen automatically turns off, that's fine. However, when I call somewhere where I need to dial a few numbers, I tap a button to turn on screen again, however, I haven't been able to find a way to turn it off again.
Yesterday during a call to my ISP where I needed to press 1-3-4, I accidentally hang up the phone call 3 consecutive times with my cheek, just because the screen was not turned off.
Thank you in advance.
Cheers!
I believe it has a proximity sensor, so the screen turns off when its close to sommit. The sensors are top left of the phone. Just try it, and see if it always stays on when you put your hand close to it.
Hi MalekoUK.
Thanks for your answer. I already tried this and it did not work, this is why my call got hung for 3 consecutive times...
Is there a Default switch or parameter in the registry to test if this sensor is activated? Another way to test if it works properly?
Cheers!
Well there is a tweak for the proximity sensor in development now, take a look and see if it helps or fixes it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624206
Maybe you have a faulty prox sensor? Also, maybe a hard reset will fix it?
It's strange, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
My ROM is an Official 1.48 ESN
No one else has had this issue?
Cheers,
Well, I'm somehow glad to see I'm not the only one... See Here

No Wake-up after phone call

Still tested different NAND-Android Roms on my HD2 but got still a problem. If i make a phone call and the screen turns black while calling i press the endkey to end the phone call. But instead of turning on the device, the screen stays black and i need to pull the battery and restart the phone.
If i make a phone call and use the free speaking funktion, while the screen don't turn off, i got no problem when ending the phone call.
I don't know what the problem could be, but it seems, that the thing has to do with the sensor who turns the screen on and off. But i don't know if this is the problem and/or know how to fix this problem. Like i said, i tested different Android Roms formated the SD-Card, deleted cache and all the stuff, but nothing fixed this problem. :-(
28 Views and no one with this problem? :-(
There are 2 other threads discussing this issue already. Here is one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=946012
Issue lies with the light/proximity sensor. Could be defective hardware. Could be incorrect sensor drivers. Could be dirty sensors. I have yet to take mine apart to check for dirt on sensors. Blowing into the led/earpiece opening seemed to help. I notice if it doesn't come back on I can hold a very bright light (ex: cigarette lighter) about an inch away and the screen comes on as long as the lighter is lit. Sometimes it stays on.
thanks for your answer. seems to be more things to test and maybe solve this problem. Thanks!
THANK YOU Agoattamer!
Your link helped me to solve the problem! I just cutted a little piece of my screen protector, where the proximity sensor is, and got no more freezes after the phone calls! The screen protector still got two holes for the light and proximity sensor, but this seemed not to be big enough. Anyway, thank you a lot for your post!

I also tried a a lot of different NAND ROM and I had also this problem and I can't use Android efficiently. Now I am using hyperdroid ROM ( first GBX now CM). With this ROM and sanity app (from market, with correct settings you can find with trying) I almost solve this problem. ( probability of 95 % I don't get this error)
hey guys! i found the solution goin through the market!
download an app called "Sanity" theres a free version in the regular android market.
go to the settings > general > check "Reverse Proximity" (This will give you some warning about not using it if you DONT have a buggy proximity sensor). Check it anyways. Then go back to preferences then click "Proximity" scroll down and uncheck Turn off screen and leave leave the Turn on screen checked. this will force your phone to stay on during calls so that it never has to go through the proximity phase of calls this no more black screens. Hope this was helpful ^_^

Screen durning call

When I call my voicemail and go to put in my pin the screen flickers on an off. I know you have an option to keep the screen on but that will obviously kill the battery more. Anyone else having this issue?

Your probably getting your hand up to close to the sensor near the top of the screen triggering it to turn off because it thinks it's close to your face.

Disable automatic screen shutoff during phone calls

I have a crack in my screen which seems to make the phone's sensor think it's constantly pressed against my ear, thus not allowing me to use the keypad during calls, switch apps during calls, and on incoming calls, not even hang up.
I was wondering if anyone knew of any way to disable the automatic screen shutoff so I can get around this. I am using CyanogenMod 10.2 on a rooted Sprint galaxy s4, but have had the same problem with the derrick Samsung os.
Thank you, and if I'm posting this in the wrong place, apologies and please let me know where it belongs!

The screen off during calls is controlled by 1 of the top sensors, not by screen touch...Maybe there is damage to or on the surface area above the sensor...

I know you're on CM but here's how it's done in stock, you can toggle the "Turn off screen during calls" when you bring up the dial pad and hit menu then call settings.
Unselecting that item keeps the screen on as it won't use the proximity settings (like when you put it to your ear) to turn off the screen...which is essentially what you've already described that you think is occurring with the crack in your screen...
hope that helps.

Never noticed that, thanks! I wasn't able to find something similar in my OS. I love CM, but I might have to switch back to stock for this.
Btw I also noticed it's accessible through settings > my device > call in stock.
Anyhow, instead of moving from CM, have you tried something like this app to turn off the sensor in calls https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.itsme4ucz.screenoff
or tried to use the Tasker app to toggle it off? might be worth a shot.
EDIT:
There was a mod for this, so you're likely to find something around that will coincide with what your running on yours - see this: http://www.modaco.com/topic/362514-mod-disable-proximity-sensor-cm101-based-roms-only/
also have you seen this thread on issues with this in CM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2409698 ?
AND the other option is to try blowing air in might help, just in case it isn't related to your screen crack....see also: http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...edition/311795-s4-proximity-sensor-issue.html
