Just got my new black Samsung galaxy s5 on att. I have noticed something that I hope will not become an issue that would cause me to have to exchange the phone. I noticed a small gap at the top of my screen where the screen meets the bezel. There is some dust that has gotten in there and I have only had the phone for a week. The rest of the phone (sides and bottom) are flush with no gaps. Is this normal or should I worry and let my OCD drive me to exchange it? Have any of you experienced this?
same issue
Funny i was wondering if I was over reacting. I saw this gap and thought the same thing. I had a Motorola Atrix that got dusty under the screen due to the same type off thing. I have not put recovery on my phone so that Knox does not trip. I'd like to hear more from people before i think about warranty. I will refuse a refurbished phone.

Well take it for what it is but at least you are not alone. There are two of us with this issue. As for whether it is normal or not, well I am not sure and that is why I posted here. I am with you on the warranty. I will not take a refurb phone. I will check a couple in the ATT store tomorrow and report back my findings. My 14 days is up thursday so I need to decide quick if this is a real issue. Thank you for replying!!
Nathan
Same issue on both mine and my collegues device.
Please post a picture so we can see.
I will try and post pictures tonight. If anyone else could post picture of theirs we could compare and see if maybe this is just the design of the phone. Again, thank you all for replying!

Pics please, and no its not normal. If dust can get into the phone then so can water and so its not water resistent anymore. I would exchange if it we`re me
Exchange it!!
I would definitely exchange it. That gap would compromise the IP67 that the GS5 has. And what I hear alot is Samsung CS sucks!! So you don't wanna have to deal with them should something happen.
Do you guys actually own a GS5? Could you check yours and see. It is not big, just enough to fit a piece of paper into. And is that confirmed that it would compromise the ip67 certification? I mean do you really know that for sure?
Not trying to be rude but just inquiring.
Yes I do own a GS5. And there is no gap. It's tight all around the bezel. And sorry, I meant to say it COULD, not would. Can't trust autocorrect these days Lol

No problem! Just checking. Alright well it looks like I am going to try and do an exchange. Now my only worry is what will happen if the replacement has the same issue?
Then get a really good cover for it! Lol. But hopefully that won't be the case. Fingers are crossed for you! There's nothing more annoying than getting a faulty looking unit right out of the box :/ @Primenay13
Went to the AT&T store. They had two there a black and a white one. They both look exactly like mine. So I will post the pictures of mine and tell me what you guys think.

Compare this to your device and let me know if it looks similar. In the meantime, I have requested a replacement from amazon since my 14 day return is almost up.
Also, the second picture shows the issue the best.
Has anyone taken a look and compared yet?
It's normal.
Your phone is extremely linty, so its hard to tell much. Also, you should circle what you're referring to. From the pictures I don't see anything unusual.

That is the point. For me, the only part that gather lint is in this gap between the screen and top bezel. I have another picture here that will show you the nature of the gap. I used a piece of paper for scale. The piece of paper can fit right in between this gap, even folded.
Picture 1 https://iu.box.com/s/mb4tas4limxxwyrrbecr
Here is a picture circling what I was talking about https://iu.box.com/s/1997kzvtsfaxavp08w8a
Notice how on the right side where I circled, the screen glass is flush with the bezel. There is dust on top of the screen but not inside this gap. However, on the top where I circled, there is a noticeable gap where there is dust INSIDE.
Also some additional information, The replacement phone I got has the same thing!!!! UHHHHH..

I have a hard time believing that you guys don't have it considering I have seen 3 phones, all brand new, and they all look like this. When you say you don't have it, are you saying that your phone DOES NOT look like mine in the pictures I posted, or just saying nope without looking.?

what awful crack!...
Strange that the "new" redesigned case has date of manufacture -> 08w39 and the "old" cracked one is -> 08w44... Could it be that they knew it all the time that these cracks will be happening, but instead of mass recall the "cracky" cases they sold all of that saying "What will be will be...."

Thats because it is a sticker on the phone. Not the case.
somehow i dont think its the redesign issue, something else thats unknown must be the problem, my xperia date is 09W08 with the same design as the second pic, still no cracks...
Uh... where's the difference in the design? Can't really tell.
Had a crack in the same place, and now also have the "new" redesign case replacement.

No sharp corner in the new design. The first thing you learn to not have when you study design. Everyone learns that except the tossers at SE

yeah bro SE has the worst designs...
Does somebody have the old design on pic without the crack so it will be easier to see?
Edit: Fixed it. Nobody can miss the difference now.
if you look closely you can see the difference. the corner where the crack starts is different from the one without the crack. the corner is filleted (ie. rounded) where as the corner with the crack is pointed.
i was gonna wait before i send my x1 to get the housing replaced. i didn't see why people would send the phone in for repairs when SE haven't even come up with a redesigned housing yet and just end up getting cracks all over again. but now, it seems like a good time to do so. btw, i've counted a total of 8 cracks on my x1.

Good choice. This was my second time I had it on service for a cracked case and if you put it all togehter (had it on service three times) I have had my phone on service for 63 days. That's 2 months on a phone that isn't a year old yet.
time to repair
I have the problem where my phone won't charge unless it's turned off.
But now I also have the cracked case problem.... So I think it is time to repair.
I really love the phone... but at that price, I expect better quality. I just hope they don't keep it too long.

I have the old design.
I have dropped mine more than 10 times. 3 of them hard falls. Not a crack or a scratch on it. I use it all the time, in my pocket, on the desk, in my hand, etc.
I dropped my Epic yesterday (luckily not a scratch) but now I feel the slider a bit loose from the left side. You can lift it 1-2mm from the left side if held in portrait mode, but right side still sturdy. Its a but annoying to type since it wobbles a bit and makes some clicking sound when open. Just wanted to ask if anyone has or seen a teardown of the Epic to see if there is a way to tighten the slider a bit??
**cmon ex Pre users... u know how it feels**
Thanx
Mine does it a tad bit as well. Never dropped, but I think the case may be causing it to losen up a bit.
Mine does the same thing. Only had it 4th days and it's got some serious wobble. Definitely wish it felt more sturdy, ala moto droid
what your feeling seems to be what most epic users are having. I wish they made the slide as sturdy as the TP2 slide was. Man that thing was strong! My old epic had the same kind of movement right out of the box, I recently got another one and it is not too bad but I am sure over time it will loosen up again.
The build quality is really on the "meh" side. My first Epic had screen wobble after a week and the screen glass raising up above the bezel on the left side. My replacement (brand new) had screen wobble out of the box and again the glass on the left side of the screen is raising up slightly above the bezel. You can slide it open, press on the glass on the left side and literally see it move back down into the bezel. The stores display model had a tight screen and the glass was set into the bezel on both sides. Not in the mood to go on a replacement spree. I pay insurance so I am waiting to see if it gets any worse over time.

Styckx,
from a employee's perspective, you'd have a MUCH better experience if you swap them out immediately until you get a perfect handset. The longer the wait between replacements, the more likely it is for the following:
The rep forgets you. Sounds silly, but dealing with one rep/store makes it more likely they go the extra mile for you. For example, replacing the epic with a new one, instead of a refurb.
They decide it's not a replaceable issue and tell you to go through insurance and pay the $100 deductible if you feel the need to replace it.
It gets worse and worse until you finally decide to head to the store, and they tell you it's now considered physical damage and refer you to Asurion.
I can't tell you how many loose charging ports or slides we saved from being *broken* phones by catching it early. Big difference.
no luck finding a useful teardown to see if there is an easy way to access the slider and see if you can just grip it a little so its tighter...
can the tach at sprint take a look at it?? Im past my 30 days and im not looking for a replacement... just enough for it to stop making sounds when i type while walking...
The screen rides on rails. If you have ever taken apart a semi auto handgun then you would know what i am talking about. Only way to tighten them up would be to squeeze the female end of the rails which is on the keyboard part of the phone.
See attatched pic for disassembly.

did you figure out how to tighten it? I have the same problem. My became loose because I was trying to pry out a case I put on. It's not exactly loose, but it bugs me that there's a 1mm gap between the screen and keyboard.
Sultan, can you take pictures of the back of the phone as well?
If you could demo a "teardown" on that (what else do you have to lose?) and figure out how to safely tighten the railing, that'd be great.
I don't know if it would be possible so if there's any brave or rich soul out there willing to attempt, many of us will be grateful.
I've had my phone for about 8 days now and I noticed the wobble as soon as I took it out of the box. If I have my palm on the bottom right corner and then try to click something in the upper left corner, the screen rocks back and forth. Annoying.
I got it at best buy. not sure if I want to go through the hassle of unrooting and getting a new phone just for a minor wobble. Can you just take it back and say you want a new one? I've never done it before...
I had to send that one back to assurion. Sorry guys.
But from what i saw if you could somehow tighten the rails then it will work.

I took my epic back to best buys cause of screen wobble. They didnt have a problem at all. I just told them to compare it with other epics they had in stock.
Does anyone else have any issues with dust being trapped between the layers of glass on their screen?
I've actually been waiting for a replacement phone since day one (due to a scratch on the screen from the factory), but today I noticed a new problem that wasn't there before. There is now some dust that is trapped between the layers of glass.

Sorry about the crummy picture. I'm not sure if you can tell but if you're looking at the phone itself, it's obvious the dust is on some middle layer, due to the way the shadows fall. Since it's not on the outermost layer, I see no way of getting rid of this.
Has anyone else had this problem?

That is a bad idea, I did that once on a Nexus one.
It had two spec of dust under the screen, i removed the battery and used canned air. When I turned the phone over the lower half of the screen was filled with dusts.
My suggestion is to get a replacement.
E
I woke up today and noticed dust under my screen as well. I have no idea how it got under there, or when, I just noticed it today.
Has anyone done any replacement due to this issue? I'm afraid I'm going to get a refurbished phone if it gets exchanged. For those who bought at the microsoft store, do you get your exchanges there or are they sent to you?
just noticed dust inside my screen today
This has me a bit nervous because I noticed a bit of lint under the screen today. The point of entry appears to be the speaker above the screen, which has tiny holes which may allow dust to get trapped (permanently?) underneath. With that in mind I certainly wouldn't recommend blowing air on it which probably would just push more dust through the holes.
noticed a large quantity of dust under the glass today. I have been loving this phone really, but this is disappointing-especially since if I send it back I will likely get a refurb.
I did attempt a fix myself, slid out the keyboard and turned over the phone to remove the 2 screw covers and screws. Popped off the top plastic cap and attempted to slide the glass up and off. Glass wouldn't budge.
i could be wrong but most of the replacement DVPs that have been sent out are brand new units. if the dust is really annoying I'd go for a replacement.
has anyone written to dell?
did they correct this issue in the production?
I asked about this a while ago.. I got a new one from Dell.
I THINK looking at the phone and screen, the lint is getting in via the speaker hole at the top.
Also it looks like fine denim pocket lint.. how many of you with the complaint, wear denim and stick the phone in your front pocket?
Both my initial DVP from the WP7 launch (11/8) and my current one have dust under the screen. I tried getting a replacement from Dell last week, but the replacement locked up frequently. For now I'm sticking with dust rather than lockups.
I'm interested to know if others who have had their's for a few months are experiencing the same.

Not sure, but it could also be getting in from the back. There is tons of dust/lint from my pocket underneath the battery cover and battery.
the evidence is compelling
dell should stick to computers, where they have excellent service
if they want to manufacture phones then research first
i dont think they forgot about sealing the screen
Has anybody tried casings etc? Do these help keeping dust away? I have heard of invisible shield and otter box.anybody tried them?

I think it's just a flaw in the design. It happened on my original MS Store DVP and the December replacement.
I've got a few specks of dust under my screen as well. Super frustrating because I don't even use the DVP daily, it just sits at home for testing usually. Now I keep it in a ziplock bag because I'm a freak.
My brother's first unit had a ton of dust under it, but for the moment his new one is fine. He actually uses his everyday and it spends tons of time in his pocket.
Definitely a design flaw/ quality control issue but I won't send it in just to get a refurb back, I don't trust Dell enough.
My second replacement Galaxy S6 had a spec of dust on arrival

Don't know if it's a rare coincidence or all units are all having some form of defects.
Getting my 4th one soon and I'm already worried.
I reckon that T mobile got there hands on a beta batch that have defects
I seriously doubt it is dust, as the AMOLED technology doesn't allow dust to penetrate between the screen and the display as they are one. So it could be dead pixels.
It is possible that during manufacturing some dust penetrated under the digitizer before it got glued to the screen. Return it until you get a perfect unit.

Mine has a small black speck on the left in-between the aluminum frame and the glass. It's only visible if I'm looking at the screen straight on or tilt it. It kind of drives me crazy when I remember it's there, I don't know if I should send it back.
Well 4th time's the charm right? That actually looks like a dead pixel... if the 4th one screws up, what will be your options? Keep asking for one until they give you one that is finally good?

Doubt it. When placing the screen, as far as I know, they do it in dust-free environment so it isn't really possible any particles to go between the screen and the display.
Look at all the pictures - it doesn't look like dust, it looks like dead pixels. And having dead pixels is normal on every phone - yeah, could be annoying but that's about it. I think Samsung has a policy that they will return your phone if and only if you have a certain amount of dead pixels (at least it was like that during the time of the S4). Hence if you have a single dead pixel chances are that they are gonna tell you to f**k off
It's definitely not a dead pixel. I looked at the phone at a wide angle and is definitely a spec of black dust.

Shoddy QA needs to be dealt with at a corporate level and the only way to do that is if everyone sends their devices back when they have crap like that happening!

How the heck is a environment considered 100% dust-proof anyway? Having twenty thousand ionizers around the entrances to the room?
Dust exists everywhere, presumably they get the screens from the factory that makes them.. There is guaranteed to be dust in that factory.. They then open up the screen packaging to get access to them.. Sure enough that dust free room is now containing dust.
It's like a mysophobic nightmare.

I've got my 4th one today. The screen is clear of any particles. Although. Samsung yet has to answer for the pink hue issue on most of their displays on smartphone.

Good to hear! Well sort of.
Mine has a spec right in the middle of the screen, definitely not a dead pixel, I'm probably going to call and get a replacement
Guys, Just received my Samsung Galaxy s6 black 32gb sim free today from Amazon UK.
Noticed a large spec of dust under screen too getting a replacement unit tomorrow.
The quality control on this phone is just as bad as Apple iPhone 6 hope I don't get banned on Amazon for returning too many phone's due to Samsung shoddy quality control team.
I have it too

just got my phone from the service the other day for a screen replacement and the new screen has a spec of dust in it. You can see it that is under the glass. Do they change the screen under warranty if you have a spec of dust ?!?!
Ive opened a new thread for this if someone is interested: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/general/changed-screen-warranty-dust-screen-t3328890

Why would you so proudly announce that you made a duplicate thread? Not cool bro.
long version of the problem
Just got my phone after screen replacement and I have noticed a spec of dust under the glass and the samsung logo is not straight. The spacing around the the logo is to the left. That is not all, you can see the glue under the glass there are waves of discoloration from the glue used. I have told the official service the problem of the new screen they just put on my phone and they told me the screen is send from samsung as it is. WE can not change it again ! WHAT ?! They wanna tell me that if they change the screen once because of manufacturing fault (the original screen was not responding to touch and it was yellow-ish) they cant change it again ?! Please someone explain the laws of warranty
You can see everything on the images except the waves that are very difficult to photograph.
The good old dyson helped me in the past sucking out dust on my iphone

The person mentioning about impossible presence of dust in a so called "dust-free" environment (they are actually called clean rooms) is either an idiot or uninformed. Contamination is not impossible. And many factories across the globe have rather questionable clean rooms, you should start doing some research.
I think maybe the clear plastic on the camera was effecting my pictures. Well I hope so. LoL. It's not easy getting off especially the flash one. I did it carefully because I didn't want to scratch them. I guess if your pictures are fine then you can leave them on but damn Samsung you should put tabs on them so it's easy to take off. I would think all S6 Edges come like that. Mine is from T-Mobile. Darn you can't see it. I'll post a bigger picture.

See the white line in sky close to the bird way up in the sky? It goes from the top to the bottom. I noticed on 5 pictures and different angles.
Good call, i have always known about the stickers and remove them for customers usually (i sell phones for a living) but i didnt notice the flash one! gotta check it out now, thanks!
Thanks!!! I hadn't even noticed them.
Can you guys see in the sky what I'm talking about? If so do you think I might be right about the picture protector being the issue? Guess I should take more pictures now but stupid rain all week. Lol. Just want to find out if I have a issue with my camera.
A girl with nails might help getting the stickers off. LoL. I think I just lightly put my finger on the corner of the bottom of the flash and moved slightly up. I then noticed that it was on. I wonder if it's on my Note 4. LoL
The first thing I did is taking them off with the plastic cover of the phone
Thanks for the headsup + :good:
I"ll be damn, I missed those also, thanks.
I used a piece of strong packing tape to get them off. Just touched and pulled. Much easier than trying to get your fingernail in there and risking a scratch.
This makes no difference to the camera picture quality whatsoever. Tested this so many times on my
phones. Zero. So i leave it on for protection
My pictures are just fine
are you sure we should remove it?isnt it there for the protection?

I beg to differ I notice auto focus on previous devices to be impacted. Along with dust and dirt forming up around the edges over time have a direct impact with the camera

+1
The S4 also had issues with this similar style of protector over the camera from factory

Maybe it's not a issue for your phone but I noticed it might be a issue for mine. Other people feel the same way as me.

You can still scratch the lens regardless if it's on or not. Having a $700+ phone I've very careful with it. Plus a case could help raise it a tad so the camera isn't flush.

Thanks for the answer ill read that droid life article and might get rid of those stickers
i wanted to ask something instead of making a new thread
for some reason i cant see the tickets button in chrome browser so any time i want to awap to another ticket i've ipened i need to press the left button near the home button
why is that?is it better to just use the default brpwser?
Heh, I was so annoyed with this that I even took it off the demo unit at my local BestBuy when I was playing with it. First thing I did when I took mine out of the box.
Each to their own
Funny how so many of these youtube tech reviewers forget to remove it.
By the way I took them off but they don't have effect on the picture quality as the lens over only covers the edges not the lens itself as u can see so it doesn't matter u keep it or take it off
