Droid 1 VS Droid X : First Impressions

I recently got a Droid X as an upgrade from the original Droid, and decided to compare the two:

I personally think the Droid X is more solid than the Droid 1. In your review you said the Droid X is plastic!?!? It is metal buddy.

It's probably because the Droid X is so much lighter.

Yes, handling solely the Droid X for a few days, it doesn't really feel plastic, but quite strong. I guess I was in the mindset that heavier is stronger, which [gladly] isn't always the case.
Also, Nixing MotoBlur for Launcher Pro Beta has drastically improved my experience with the Droid X - I do recommend!

Why I Love My Moto X

Why I love my Moto X even though I'm a spec lover.
1. Active Notifications - by far the best feature
2. Touchless Control - I'm using this more and more everyday.
3. Battery life
4. Small, compact and easy to hold.
5. X8 computing system. No lag whatsoever. Yes, smoother than my two other Snapdragon 600 phones.
6. Assembled in the US.
The phone is not perfect (camera, warm screen, 720 screen).
My other phones include S4 and LG Optimus Pro.

I just bought the Moto Droid Maxx on Verizon. I've been using a GS4 and before that a Nexus 4.
I have to say, this phone is awesome. I'm loving active notifications, assist, and touchless control. They're changing the way that I use my phone.

a 4.7inch screen with an RGB matrix display with ppi above 300.. there is no way you would notice a difference compared to 1080p unless the screen technology itself is different. the resolution makes no difference and it just seems like such a petty thing to complain about. youre saving battery life. its the same way people who dont understand android think this phone sucks because its not quad core. lol.. you save battery and gain speed with the dualcore. its a lot more efficient. things like this will make it a hard phone to sell to the folks who like to brag about useless specs (aka the s3/s4 groupies)
warm screen can be adjusted with color multipliers and gamma settings
camera i really hope it sucks because of software like the first few batches of the htc one and not hardware related

The only time you can see a difference on the screen is when comparing Moto X to a 1080 screen side by side. The 720 screen is very good but not the best. I understand the decision behind the 720. As for it being warm, yes it can be changed but not out of the box like other phones (Samsung). For now, I'm stock with default settings.
I love the Moto X and highly recommend it.

I know people say that it's not noticeable. But it is. I have a Droid DNA 1080p. After using that, i can easily tell the difference. I even compared the same news article side by side. It's clearly more pleasurable to read on a 1080p screen than a 720p screen. That said, it could potentially be fixed with a font update as some of the font on the htc was thinner compared to the font on the moto x.

You need to use a 1080p screen cause the difference is definitely noticeable. Put the HTC one next to the moto x and get ready to be blown away.

I used the Moto X in an AT&T store next to my One and honestly I did not have any complaints.
Too many people way overreact to things especially to screen resolution, 720p is still overkill in my opinion.

Nobody is saying that the moto X has a bad screen or that 720p isn't good, it is. But a 1080p is better, plain and simple.

Not a deal breaker at all. Some folks claim that you can't tell the difference between a 1080p vs 720p which is completely false.

It has nothing do with spec whores. It has everything to do with please your eye sight. If I personally can see a difference between 720p and 1080p then yes, its going to bother me. If its correctable thought some font/sorcery then we got something.
And why wouldn't you want the most important item (the screen) to be satisfying. But to each to their own.

Because at the end of the day, it's still a HD screen with a PPI over 300 which is the supposed maximum amount a normal eye can notice.
I don't buy most people who say "Well I can see the difference" Not to discredit those of you who really might be able to but most are dead lying and I'm sure of it.
But as you said, to each their own.

I'd be really interested in hearing your thoughts on the Moto X vs the Moto Droid Maxx. From what I can gather, the Moto X has only three main benefits over the Maxx:
Moto maker customisation
Much better looking
A little bit cheaper
I'm not fussed about the customisation. It looking better and being a bit cheaper are nice but no way a deal breaker.
On the flip side, the Maxx as the following benefits:
Much bigger battery
Wireless charging
Larger screen (not that important for me)
In short, the benefits of the Moto X aren't that great for me. However, most of the benefits of the Maxx are massive bonuses for me.
With the main benefit of the Moto X being the customisation, I really don't know why people are choosing the Moto X over the Maxx especially with the following downsides to the customisation:
Not yet available
Will be carrier exclusive when it does start
Not all options will be available to start with (e.g. wood)
Some options will cost a premium (e.g. wood).
Moto Maxx just seems like the obvious choice.
Any thoughts or opinions?

I think your points are valid. To me the design is the deciding factor. The Droid phones look ugly to me and will be greasy finger print magnets (case free living for me). As long as I get a full day of battery from the X then that is all I need.

I agree. I'll grant the Maxx is not as big a fingerprint magnet as the Ultra, but I still find the Droid line to be boxy and butt ugly. Not something I'm interested in at all.

The HTC One uses an LCD screen. Like I mentioned in my post, 720 vs 1080 on such a small screen makes absolutely no difference if the technology is the same. If Motorola used the exact same screen technology but used a 1080 resolution instead, it would hardly be noticeable and by hardly I mean BARELY unless you're staring at the screen close up in a completely dark room.

I just compared it to a GS4. So that's Amoled vs Amoled.......yeah I can still tell. It's noticeable. I must have amazing eyes.
Pixel density is pixel density. And the magic number isn't 316 ppi, it's higher. Resolution is the same as a dead pixel, once you notice it's flaw. it's over.

I am looking right now at a Galaxy S3 306 PPI, and an HTC one .. ( Over 400 ), and whoever says the human eye can't distinguish the difference is downright blind, an idiot or has an agenda of some sort ..

Two completely different screen technologies. You are always going to notice the difference between an Amoled and an LCD, regardless of PPI count. Funny, most people mention PPI as if they've been counting it all their lives. Screens are personal preferences, and people have different eyesights and color sensitivities, so there's no right answer. Just accept that and move on.

They're just justifying things after the fact.
There is absolutely a difference. Granted, the X is better due to the lack of pentile, but I can still quite easily tell. It's not horrible in terms of pixel density, but the display isn't great by any other metric.

I just hope they don't increase the screen size or dramatically alter the shape of it. If it has an identical body with nothing more than a spec bump I'll be THRILLED. 1080p amoled screen, faster processor, and 64gb storage but keep everything else the same and I will buy one the moment it drops. No need to mess with perfection.

i agree with this exactly honestly i woulsdnt complain if there was a 5 inch screen but kept the same form factor... more stoked about the moto 360 then this though..

Im just waiting to hear if it's going to be the same size or not. If it's revealed that it will be a bigger phone than the X then I'll spend my money on the current X. I'd be happy if the next X kept the same size with just a camera upgrade. We'll see soon I hope.

If this new Moto X is enticing enough, I'm actually thinking about selling my Dev edition and upgrading. However, this new X will have to seriously wow me, in terms of looks, specs, and price. Has to be all 3 of those, not just 1 or 2.

one thing that the X "failed" at was competing in the "more is everything" spec war. which is entirely unfortunate given this is easily the best android device i've owned since the original DROID. with that said, i don't want Moto to give in to the spec war. previous articles have mentioned that whatever the X successor will be, it will be a "premium" model.
so far for the X+1, i've seen reports of a 6" screen, which is absolutely and completely a horrible idea. if they shrunk the bezel to "nothing" and kept the form factor, then fine, increase the screen. but the form factor is damn near perfect.
and honestly, i wouldn't care if they kept the most of the same internals, but more RAM, extra storage and wireless charging top my list as things that are a must with the new device. or if they're going to skip wireless charge, a bigger battery.

What to keep:
Active notifications
Touchless control
I don't mind the 720p resolution
Great better life (before 4.4.2)
What to add:
Wireless charging
4.8" to 5" screen but similar form factor.
Bigger battery
Better camera
Better picture/video gallery

AKA Droid Maxx

Camera of course--13 mpix at least, but more importantly, some additional settings options, such as shutter speed. Better color balance too.
Go to 32 gB standard, with possible microSD support. Water/dust proofing also a plus; it's a functional feature that doesn't necessarily give in to the spec wars that the X eschewed in the first place.
Screen size increase? Meh. Right now I can work the phone with one hand/thumb. If it gets bigger, then not so much. If they can do something with bezel size and screen real estate with the current body size, then fine.
Screen resolution? If your eyes can't tell the difference, much greater resolution only draws more battery power. As does going quadcore--remember, Moto's own research supposedly showed that even their quadcore competitors' phones didn't use more than two cores at any time.
If they keep to close the current size, then battery capacity isn't likely to grow much, so retaining efficiency is paramount.
Nor do I care about front facing speakers, ala HTC. I don't listen to much music with phone speakers, and the quality is fine for interacting with the phone's TTV engine.
Finally, I am still a skeptic about wireless charging, if only because of the probability that it can heat the battery excessively, killing overall longevity.
Unlike wood, leather backs are not my thing--what's next, chinchilla?

I think the X+1 is not the 2014 X. Maybe it meants 4.7+1 = 5.7in phablet? maybe they have another name for the X?

If they don't change the name it may or may not just be 2014 moto x like the n7 but I doubt it.... Hopefully its not moto x+1 cause that's the stupidest name I've ever heard of

The leak picture actually sayS +X1. JPNo idea why everyone's stuck to +1

I would be persuaded to upgrade if they added:
Wireless charging
Bigger capacity battery
Better camera
Upgraded specs
Even more waterproofing
I'm hoping they don't change the size or form-factor as it's perfect for me. I don't really care about a leather back as I love the woven back.

Front facing speakers would be ideal; firing your audio away from you on the back of your phone is retarded for watching video.

honestly they are becoming extinct and the desire for them wont make that change manufactures want you to buy up for memory why would they want you to buy the cheapest model and allow you to upgrade the memory outside their pockets?

all i know is if they make the phone larger, i am going to have to look for a different phone or stay with this one till it dies. i have had the One, S4, Nexus 5 and pretty much any high end device in recent years and one of the main reason i love my X is due to its size.

My firm's AirWatch policy does not allow rooted phones or custom ROMs, so with that in mind, the Moto X pure edition comes out looking as good or better than a 5.2 inch screen Nexus.

I have both the 2014 Moto X and the Moto Maxx. If they do go QHD in the Moto X hopefully they can source a better quality screen then the Maxx uses. It is QHD and offers nothing over the Moto X screen. Myself and friends have compared the screens side by side and the Moto X screen always wins.
The bigger the battery the better. I'd much prefer something closer to the Maxx battery which is 3900 mah. Would have liked wireless charging as well but this is unlikely if it has any kind of curved back.

Thanks. Frankly, my original Moto X screen has less banding and artifacts than my 2014. Sad to see manufacturers playing the pixel race.

I thought the original Moto X screen was terrible. I could not get rid of that phone fast enough. I could list about 5059383 complaints I had with that phone, but I'll stick to the screen. It looked like absolute crap compared to my Nexus 7 and my Nexus 5 (which I got the day it came out and immediately sold my Moto X). Going from my Nexus 7 screen to my Moto X screen was like going from an HD flat screen TV to a 1950s box-style TV. You can see the list of phones I've owned in my signature, plus I purchased a GS4 for my girlfriend and have some experience using it. I rank the Moto X 2013 at the very bottom of that list without question. On the flip side, I rank the Moto X 2014 #2 on the list, right behind the Nexus 5. That is adjusting for the time frame, of course--I would rather have a Moto X 2014 than a Nexus 5 today, but the Nexus 5 from Oct. 2013-2014 was better than the Moto X Sept. 2014-Sept. 2015.

I'd like to see 1.5 days of heavy use in terms of battery life or two days of moderate use. I'd also like the screen to stay at 5.2" The Nexus 6 is just too big for me.

Good - 5.2" screen size and larger battery. 808 instead of 810.
Bad - QHD screen, waste of battery and will increase cost. Will also cause lag as the 808 chipset tries to push that many pixels.
4GB RAM seems unlikely.

Just realized the SD808 comes with a slower adreno (418) than the SD805 (420). Crap.
I'm waiting on anandtech's review to see what the real difference is between the two GPUs. I'm hoping just a slightly lower clock speed.

Errrr, the secondary coil of the wireless charging system can be curved, no problem with that, the primary coil would still induces electricity on the secondary coil, curved or not.

QHD doesnt necessarily mean battery killer anymore.
With each successive generation Samsung has been systematically improving the power efficiency of their OLED displays. We measured a 20 percent improvement in display power efficiency between the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy S6, which is especially impressive given that the Galaxy S6 has almost double the number of pixels and therefore much higher processing overhead

QHD is a technology that is being pushed to the consumers as just benefits. In the future, the cons will be minimized because we will have stringer SOC with minimal impact in this resolution, most energy efficient screens and better batteries. But it's feasible in the near future, not in this year...
I prefer a cheaper phone or a smoother and battery efficient phone now, not 600 ppi in my 5" display...

They would have to make the phone thick and heavy like the Droid Turbo/Maxx to get that kind of battery performance. I prefer the lighter, thinner Moto X to the Turbo/Maxx.

No one knows yet, but if it is like the Moto X 2014, it will likely be $500 on launch for the base model and $50 more for the larger storage and $25 more for the premium backs. But now that Lenovo owns Motorola maybe not.

These so called leaks always make me laugh. I could have made up a spreadsheet of specs and it would look pretty similar to this. I think these sites makeup these leaks for clicks. My preference would be same screen size at 1080, 3000mAh battery and better camera processing sw.

Same screen better color calibration, same edge thinness but slightly thicker middle to fit a 2800-3000mah battery, camera obviously,

Moto X Play & Moto X Style Announced - Extremely Disappointed!!

I think it's officially time for me to move onto something else after my Moto X 2nd Gen!
Here's what completely puts me off upgrading to the Moto X Play (Style is completely out of the question!!!):
-SIZE!!!
-Heavier
-Thicker
-No 802.11ac WiFi
-Almost same type of processor!
-No 4k video recording
-Same single speaker design instead of dual speakers
-No OIS (this should be standard by now for a 2015 flagship!!!)
Are any of you guys enticed by this crap?? Seems like selling their soul to the devil (Lenovo) has made them completely lose it!
Apparently the Moto X Style has an LCD display?????? I take it no Moto Display on this version then??
Extremely disappointed in Motorola but those of you that used to whinge about having a micro SD slot will be over the moon lol.

I'm assuming you aren't in the US, since that phone won't even be available to us. I'll see what the next nexus phones are like, but chances are it will come down to the camera for me this time around

I was surprised that they didn't talk about software improvements... I was hoping Motorola would add more assist/voice features
But price is a huge positive....

I think I'll keep hold of my X 2014 for another year and go for the iPhone 7 next year.
I'll really miss Tasker and Moto Voice though

Yeah, I am totaly disappointed too. I will keep my moto x too and will now try to root it.

Moto Display in a LCD is a big challange.

The moto x is always not the flagship model of the motorola.
The Droid Turbo did!
But the next version of Droid has not even announced yet

The X Play version isn't their flagship anymore, it's like a higher-mid tier option. And considering its battery size at a price point that starts at $300 dollars, I'd say you're getting a pretty good deal. The 2014 X retailed at $500 in case you don't remember.

Well I would have called the nexus 6 their flagship of 2014 instead of the turbo since the droid line was Verizon exclusive.

The X play is more like the step between the MOTO G and the MOTO X. It doesn't look like the nexus is returning to Motorola this year so the new MOTO X probably will be their flagship device. I mean 6 core processor, 21 megapixel camera, 5 megapixel front facing camera.
What could come out topping that on Motorola's end? Oh ya and 5.7 inch full resolution screen. As well as a micro SD slot returning. Did you guys read the specs? What more do you want out of a phone

Something that's as thin and compact in my hand?
Metal back?
These things are huge and I believe this is gonna be their downfall.
I've been a massive Moto X fan since they first released the very first Moto X but I really can't stand the new models and am sad that I'll be forced to move to another device (most likely an iPhone).

I'm pretty sure the majority of users here will happily trade an extra millimeter of thickness to accommodate a bigger battery.

You'll be saying the same thing when the Moto X 2016 is announced lol. It seems to be getting bigger each year. I'm certain next year's model will hit 6 inches in screen size like the Nexus 6.

Very disappointed in the new Moto X Style announcement. 5.7" is way too big. 5.2" is my limit. Also the snapdragon 800 series 808 or 810 are very disappointing to me along with losing the Amoled display. I will be holding onto my 2014 Moto X until next year.

I bought the new Moto G, because hell, it's $220, why not? And then will wait to see what the next Nexus is like. I agree, 5.7 is just too damn big.

Sounds like I'm one of the few who likes the new size. It's physically about the same size as the iPhone 6+ which fits in my pocket fine and the larger size is great for movies and games when coupled with the stereo speakers.
I also prefer the LCD to AMOLED. MotoDisplay is still going to be doable and with LCDs becoming more and more efficient it shouldn't have a huge impact on battery life.

Exactly my thoughts on it!
Moto X Play seems a downgrade to me in all aspects other than the battery department. I'll reserve my judgement on the 21MP camera until it's been properly tested.
Another phone I'm now considering is the Z4 Compact if it loses some fat.

I agree. I am hoping for the new Nexus 5 will be good...if not I might try to get a OP2. iPhone would be my last resort, but still an option.

How is a one carrier phone the flagship? The Moto X is, has been and will be the flagship.
I don't mind the new size. As I get older a bigger screen is good for my eyes, lol. I did say I'd pick my next phone on getting at least a half way decent camera so that will determine it for me. I was also thinking having expandable storage would be important for my purposes so it's nice that Motorola is kind of bucking that trend.
It'll be interesting to see what Google come up with.

Ikr. The Moto X Pure is going to be fantastic! I can't wait to get it and unlock its bootloader!!!!
I think I will go with a black front, white back and champagne accents. So pretty!

So true! I use my phone as much as a mobile computing device as a phone so a big screen is good for me too. I can see how guys who want to carry the phone in their pocket don't like larger phones and if you can read those smaller screens great but I can't.
