Why I Love My Moto X

Why I love my Moto X even though I'm a spec lover.
1. Active Notifications - by far the best feature
2. Touchless Control - I'm using this more and more everyday.
3. Battery life
4. Small, compact and easy to hold.
5. X8 computing system. No lag whatsoever. Yes, smoother than my two other Snapdragon 600 phones.
6. Assembled in the US.
The phone is not perfect (camera, warm screen, 720 screen).
My other phones include S4 and LG Optimus Pro.

I just bought the Moto Droid Maxx on Verizon. I've been using a GS4 and before that a Nexus 4.
I have to say, this phone is awesome. I'm loving active notifications, assist, and touchless control. They're changing the way that I use my phone.

a 4.7inch screen with an RGB matrix display with ppi above 300.. there is no way you would notice a difference compared to 1080p unless the screen technology itself is different. the resolution makes no difference and it just seems like such a petty thing to complain about. youre saving battery life. its the same way people who dont understand android think this phone sucks because its not quad core. lol.. you save battery and gain speed with the dualcore. its a lot more efficient. things like this will make it a hard phone to sell to the folks who like to brag about useless specs (aka the s3/s4 groupies)
warm screen can be adjusted with color multipliers and gamma settings
camera i really hope it sucks because of software like the first few batches of the htc one and not hardware related

The only time you can see a difference on the screen is when comparing Moto X to a 1080 screen side by side. The 720 screen is very good but not the best. I understand the decision behind the 720. As for it being warm, yes it can be changed but not out of the box like other phones (Samsung). For now, I'm stock with default settings.
I love the Moto X and highly recommend it.

I know people say that it's not noticeable. But it is. I have a Droid DNA 1080p. After using that, i can easily tell the difference. I even compared the same news article side by side. It's clearly more pleasurable to read on a 1080p screen than a 720p screen. That said, it could potentially be fixed with a font update as some of the font on the htc was thinner compared to the font on the moto x.

You need to use a 1080p screen cause the difference is definitely noticeable. Put the HTC one next to the moto x and get ready to be blown away.

I used the Moto X in an AT&T store next to my One and honestly I did not have any complaints.
Too many people way overreact to things especially to screen resolution, 720p is still overkill in my opinion.

Nobody is saying that the moto X has a bad screen or that 720p isn't good, it is. But a 1080p is better, plain and simple.

Not a deal breaker at all. Some folks claim that you can't tell the difference between a 1080p vs 720p which is completely false.

It has nothing do with spec whores. It has everything to do with please your eye sight. If I personally can see a difference between 720p and 1080p then yes, its going to bother me. If its correctable thought some font/sorcery then we got something.
And why wouldn't you want the most important item (the screen) to be satisfying. But to each to their own.

Because at the end of the day, it's still a HD screen with a PPI over 300 which is the supposed maximum amount a normal eye can notice.
I don't buy most people who say "Well I can see the difference" Not to discredit those of you who really might be able to but most are dead lying and I'm sure of it.
But as you said, to each their own.

I'd be really interested in hearing your thoughts on the Moto X vs the Moto Droid Maxx. From what I can gather, the Moto X has only three main benefits over the Maxx:
Moto maker customisation
Much better looking
A little bit cheaper
I'm not fussed about the customisation. It looking better and being a bit cheaper are nice but no way a deal breaker.
On the flip side, the Maxx as the following benefits:
Much bigger battery
Wireless charging
Larger screen (not that important for me)
In short, the benefits of the Moto X aren't that great for me. However, most of the benefits of the Maxx are massive bonuses for me.
With the main benefit of the Moto X being the customisation, I really don't know why people are choosing the Moto X over the Maxx especially with the following downsides to the customisation:
Not yet available
Will be carrier exclusive when it does start
Not all options will be available to start with (e.g. wood)
Some options will cost a premium (e.g. wood).
Moto Maxx just seems like the obvious choice.
Any thoughts or opinions?

I think your points are valid. To me the design is the deciding factor. The Droid phones look ugly to me and will be greasy finger print magnets (case free living for me). As long as I get a full day of battery from the X then that is all I need.

I agree. I'll grant the Maxx is not as big a fingerprint magnet as the Ultra, but I still find the Droid line to be boxy and butt ugly. Not something I'm interested in at all.

The HTC One uses an LCD screen. Like I mentioned in my post, 720 vs 1080 on such a small screen makes absolutely no difference if the technology is the same. If Motorola used the exact same screen technology but used a 1080 resolution instead, it would hardly be noticeable and by hardly I mean BARELY unless you're staring at the screen close up in a completely dark room.

I just compared it to a GS4. So that's Amoled vs Amoled.......yeah I can still tell. It's noticeable. I must have amazing eyes.
Pixel density is pixel density. And the magic number isn't 316 ppi, it's higher. Resolution is the same as a dead pixel, once you notice it's flaw. it's over.

I am looking right now at a Galaxy S3 306 PPI, and an HTC one .. ( Over 400 ), and whoever says the human eye can't distinguish the difference is downright blind, an idiot or has an agenda of some sort ..

Two completely different screen technologies. You are always going to notice the difference between an Amoled and an LCD, regardless of PPI count. Funny, most people mention PPI as if they've been counting it all their lives. Screens are personal preferences, and people have different eyesights and color sensitivities, so there's no right answer. Just accept that and move on.

They're just justifying things after the fact.
There is absolutely a difference. Granted, the X is better due to the lack of pentile, but I can still quite easily tell. It's not horrible in terms of pixel density, but the display isn't great by any other metric.

What would you like to see in the next Moto flagship?

I love my Moto X but I'm also very excited about the future of Motorola and their flagship phones. What are some things you'd like to see in the 2014 Moto superphone?
Here are some things I'd like to see:
Lower unlocked price ($400-$500)
Bootloaders unlockable for all variants
3GB ram
32GB standard, 64 & 128 optional
Faster processor
Advanced/Developer options for Active Display, Touchless Control, Connect
Fully custom color options for MotoMaker

All I want is a bigger battery. Moto X battery is the best I've seen so far and having even more would be perfect.
I came from a Galaxy S4 with 2600mAh of battery and I never got past 3h screen time whereas on the Moto X (with 2100mAh) I got 5h in the first day.
As for the rest, Motorola proved that specs are nothing if you don't optimize the system. Bigger storage would be nice though.

My biggest beef with the Moto X

A top of the line camera and wireless charging would be nice.
But what I really expect is something new, that others don't have like active notification and touchless control. I hope Motorola comes up with something even better.

I wanna see them keep the same form factor. With a better screen, easier to unlock boot loader and even better battery life.
For me s 720p AMOLED screen is the perfect compromise for a mobile device

I don't care for specs. I would like better battery life, possibly removable. That's pretty much. MicroSD tray is a bonus. I'm a bit iffy on the placement of the mic. On the plus side, I do like where it's placed cause I'm assured regardless of case-choice or angle that the mic is close to my mouth. However when I can't help but feel that the opening leaves for weakness.

To you guys that want a bigger screen, have you tried LMT Launcher?

I use it on my gnex. I have the pie enabled on both left and right sides, activation length set to 688 and thickness set to 20. Pie gravity is set to top so that the activation area ends before it reaches the top of the keyboard in portrait mode.
I have found it to be extremely handy and have used it for almost 2 years. It gives you extra screen space by allowing you to disable the navigation bar, and it allows for easier one-handed use.

Agreed. I'd like a better, or at least more consistent, camera especially in low light situations. I've taken some nice pix with my X, but also some pretty crappy ones. Most of the time in low light its hit/miss as to what I'll get, even when taking two or three pictures in a row.
I would also like to see Moto Assist match all the features of Moto's smart actions, including more profiles and options to create your own.
While battery life on my X has been very good, Increasing its size or how long it lasts would always be a plus.
As others have suggested, I hope it can keep the same form factor. The X feels perfect in my hand. While some of the cases I've put it in make it feel a little bigger, it still feels great.

Movable Nav buttons like the G2 and three size settings for nav bar height to, 100%, 50% and 25%.

Maybe their next big thing should be software customization. Let you customize the colors, and theme of the os?

Agreed on a better low light camera. I love this phone but the quality of some photos are very average at times.

Even more software optimization, a REAL better camera, DEVELOPER FRIENDLY (easiest as sammy's devices), and wireless charging.
That's the only need of this amazing phone.

Can you elaborate more on 'developer friendly'? Unless you're on AT&T or Verizon, it's as easy as it gets to unlock the bootloader. The kernel source code is already available to us and it's been fun playing with it(although failing hard...lol).

Personally I'd prefer a 5 inch screen and an OMAP chip set. I am really hoping Google snatches up that division of TI in the worst way

Apparently a Brazilian retailer leaked the specs of the X+1. What do you guys think? Personally I would liked to have seen a slightly smaller screen.

These leaks definitely seem to be getting louder. I too am really bummed about the screen. What will be a good upgrade path for the current Moto X users who want the same form factor in a year or two? The market definitely doesn't seem to want Moto X-sized phones... Which is a real shame.

The page said at the bottom 'confirm specs prior to launch' or some such thing. It's a placeholder page the sleezy click-bait sites are posting.

i really hope that if this turns out to be true, one of the other companies will step in and come up with a great 4.7" device.

Yeah to me the 4.7-inch screen size is perfect. 5.2-inch is so weird....just a little too big for those that want a smaller phone, just a little too small for those that want a bigger screened phone. Otherwise the specs are pretty nice. If they can keep the price low enough though they will have a solid phone on their hands.

Oh for God's sake 5.2", really? Just have to go with the nonsense trend Moto? I hope the phone will not be bigger by more than 5-6% than the current one, but as I see it's not gonna happen!

The market does want Moto X sized phones, but manufacturers don't. Bigger phones are cheaper to make more powerful, so the flagship phones will always be the biggest. The market wasn't given a choice, if you wanted a flagship you had to buy the biggest phone.

I am hoping all these leaks are not of Moto X+1 but of some other phone (eg. Droid..) and Motorola is purposely allow these leaks to keep the all these parapazzi away from the ACTUAL Moto X+1. It would be so awesome

Would be amazing to see a 4.7" screen at 1080p. Would be the first of its kind I believe. I don't recall any phone offering 1080p resolution below a 5" screen phone.

I just don't get the trend of having a 5" phone. Its not natural to hold in your hand. I'm just happy the moto x is such a great phone, I just don't feel the need to upgrade.

I'm not too concerned. They mentioned smaller bezels and there is more than enough bezel at the top of the x to keep a similar size and enlarge the screen. I'm more interested to see what else they improve and if they release it for a price that reflects it's specs or price it based on its competition with better specs again

Bring on the X+1, I recently picked up a Moto G to hold me over until the X+1 gets here. I suppose if the 5.2" is too crazy-big, I'll just stick with the G for a while longer.

I was really hoping they would stick with the screen size less than 5 in.
Guess i'll stick with my current moto x for now..

Not really. If you want to keep the same proportions, the screen can't be enlarged vertically without making the screen wider.

I look at my Nexus 7 2012 and then look at my Moto X.. What a difference.
The colors are so much more vivid on my X. It amazes me every time.. Makes working on my tablet "not fun" to see those drab colors, especially, when I know I have another device that has much better colors..
I am excited to see what the new screens look like. I don't think that .3 is going to make that much of a difference with most people.

New Moto G!!!

Motorola has announced the new gen of the the Moto G. The Moto G has been upgraded to a 5-inch screen. It also comes with an 8 megapixels camera in the back and 2 megapixels in the front. it will come in both 8GB & 16GB versions with a Micro SD slot. Motorola kept the phone at the same price as the original $179.99. The only bad thing is that there is no LTE version yet.

IMO 4.5" screen is better because it's easier to use it with one hand.. Also I don't like those front speakers, looks so ugly

I agree. Personally 5" is too much big for me. I feel unconfortable with a mobile of that size

Mixed bag. I wish they had increased RAM a little bit more atleast 1.5 GB and beefed up the battery little bit more . I'd have seriously considered it

Indeed, the RAM memory and the battery capacity could be increased. Also, I expected a little bit more powerful CPU (e.g. 1.5Ghz+), although the quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 is powerful enough. And last, the first generation Moto G has a 320dpi screen, while the second has a 294dpi.
I'm not sure about the pixel density, but I've read that in a site.

The bigger screen is great! The original Moto G feels small in my hand, so the option of a larger display is great. They could of added an extra gig of RAM though. 1GB is not enough for multi-tasking.

There is not much you can do keeping the price, I think that the upgrade is ok.

Well for same price having some more upgrades aint bad.
I also wished they kept only the Camer upgrade and instead of others put a lil more RAM speed.
That would have been so cool.
But who would have considered the X generation if so ;p

The biggest problem is going to battery of g2 which is 2070mAh they have upgraded the screen size from 4.5" to 5" and not the battery, in 4.4.4 Android, power backup is a issue but no improvement by Motorola, it will be power hungry, I don't see it is major upgrade which can turn the tables as our motor g does....... Also Not even a single in change in hardware, is there is no change happened in technology in previous two years, its better to wait for g3

Same amount of pixels even though the screen is bigger. My biggest problem with the g2 is the front speakers. Makes it look cheap and ugly compared to my speak moto g 4g lte

Which do you find more disappointing or will be more likely to keep you from getting the Nexus 6, the size or the price?

They made it 6 because they did not want itnto hurt moto x sales i guess and a phone in phablet section

Size!!! Because I think everyone can agree when I say that the specs are worth every top dollar except for the size...

The size is my favorite part. I don't think it's badly priced for what it brings to the table either.

That was never an issue for the past two Nexus phones made by LG that had same sized LG counterparts.
They wanted a phablet so developers could develop for phablets. Why they did not also make a smaller Nexus 6 for the huge number of people who hate the size, I do not know, but I think their reasoning was stupid whatever it was.

Yeah, I can live with the price. It would be nice if it's cheaper. But I don't buy a new phone every year, so I can scrape together the money for the awesome specs (much better specs than the Moto X).
But I just don't want a huge phablet. Super disappointing to me. My sense is that the majority of users don't want a phablet (they currently only make up 14% of the global market).
I do understand though that there are many people who like phablets and so for them the Nexus 6 is an amazing device, really the best Nexus device yet and the nicest design since the Nexus One (LG and Samsung just make cheap designs, as far as I'm concerned).

I'm gonna definitely have to say the price.. my bank account is crying right now:crying:

I was honestly hoping for a second set of handset with smaller size...heck, it did not even have to come with those killer specs. I just wanted an upgraded nexus 5 lol with maybe 5.5 inch to make my debute into the nexus line...now im caught in a loop about big devices

Price. But I don't care. Still gonna get it. Haha.

There's no reason it had to be 10.1mm thick at its deepest points. Other similar phones have spaced in identical or larger batteries in a significantly thinner frame.

I was honestly hoping for a second set of handset with smaller size...heck, it did not even have to come with those killer specs. I just wanted an upgraded nexus 5 lol with maybe 5.5 inch to make my debute into the nexus line...now im caught in a loop about big devices

Yeah, I was definitely hoping there would be a second smaller Nexus 6. I would be happy with basically a Nexus version of the Moto X that it's based on, with the 5.2" screen. Although the OIS and the stereo speakers are nice, that's definitely an improvement over the Moto X. That said, I guess the best alternative for a smaller screen is the Moto X, though it will never get all the development and roms a Nexus device will have (the 1st Gen Moto X basically had no development).
Maybe you can just save your money and spend it at Moe's Books and Gordo's Burritos instead. There are more important things in life, right?

I think because it's so thin at the edges, there's less space for the components, which have to be more in the middle, than with a phone that has one even thickness edge to edge. I'm pretty sure that's why the battery in the 2nd Gen Moto X is relatively small, even though it's a pretty large 5.2" screen device. It's not about thickness at the middle, it's about overall internal volume and geometry of the phone.

My Note 3 already feels a tiny bit small.....the extra screen size will be welcome. Especially with front facing stereo speakers. It's like my wifes HTC One M8 but much nicer. The Note 4 moved back to a rear facing single speaker.......screw that noise. Price? I'll be edge'ing up to the N6 so it won't matter.

Neither. When looking at the complete line up, starting from the Nexus 5, Moto x (2nd gen), Nexus 6, Nexus 9.. Google caters to all tastes. As for the price, it is STILL competitive considering specs and materials. Google+Motorola+HTC did a great job by having something for everyone.

Yeah, it's a great upgrade from the Note 3. If you're already happy with that size phone, then there's nothing to complain about.

The Nexus 5 is a year old phone with year old specs. I do not count that as part of the current "lineup." It does not have a 64 GB option; it does not have 3 GB of RAM; it has last year's Snapdragon chipset with a slower CPU and GPU; it does not have Wifi Direct; it does not have stereo speakers; it has crappy noise cancellation. The Nexus 5 is a perfectly good phone, but it's last year's phone, and it's only going to get older and more out of date, while waiting for the next Nexus phone and hoping it has a smaller option.
The 2nd Gen Moto X is not a Nexus phone and will get zero development (like the 1st Gen Moto X). It will also be dependent on Motorola for Android updates, with inevitable (if hopefully short) delays, and will not work properly with direct updates from Google (which would disable the special Motorola features like active notifications and Moto voice). That definitely does not count as part of the Nexus lineup.
I think the only honest way to look at it is that the Nexus 6 is the new king of hill Nexus device. It has lots of great upgrades. It is one of the best phones currently out there. And if you don't like the screen size you are out of luck.

I agree with most of what you said, although the Nexus 5 is still and will probably be amazing for several upcoming months. Hell, I would reccommend people to upgrade to it - those that need an upgrade but are turned off by the Nexus 6.

Yeah, the Nexus 5 is great (except for the crappy noise cancellation), no doubt about it. But it is a fary cry from the Nexus 6. It is in no way a smaller but otherwise equivalent device.

The size is just too damn big! Couldn't they stay at a 5" screen!
