I have galaxy s4 with stock room from sprint. I had rooted it and installed twrp custom recovery. I was trying to update the phone with OTA update but it rebooted to twrp and that is it. I tried looking for update/zip to install but nothing, update check says it was updated.
Did the update still install somehow?
If not, Where is it downloaded to update or recommend an update method?
I am also concerned about losing root. How can I avoid that in the future?

Oh, I did not know. thanks.
I currently have a Samsung Galaxy S4 (i9500) which is rooted. Plugging it into Samsung Kies shows that there's an update to the MG9 firmware available for it. I'd like to know whether it will be possible to do a backup and upgrade with the phone rooted.
If not, how safe would it be to unroot the phone via SuperSU's menu before flashing through Kies?
Lastly, if I am going to be recommended not to do either of the above, then where can I get a link to manually download the latest, original firmware as well as a working root for said firmware, for my i9500?
Thanks for the responses in advance.

Don`t think if you`ll be able to update through Kies or OTA as you system is modified and the counter is raised. You`ll have to wait till Triangle Away will work for the I9500. Just flash the new rom with Odin and reroot afterwards.

Thanks for that.
Can anyone else confirm or provide me with a link to the latest official firmware? I have searched rather quickly myself, but keep getting results for the MG5 firmware instead, which is supposedly newer than the MG9 firmware. However, Kies tells me that the latest for my device is actually MG9.
If anyone could just shed some light.

Thanks for that. Not too sure where my device originated from, so I'll have to check the documentation when I get home or something.
Also, coincidentally I stumbled upon that website about 20 minutes ago. Didn't even notice they supplied the firmware.

The i9500 variant will use any i9500 software as far as I know. You can flash the UAE firmware on an Indian i9500 and it will work fine. This goes with any country, you just need to flash using odin

Haha. This is why im a noob
Sorry if this is a newbie question, but if I root my Galaxy Note 3 (N9005, Vodafone Australia), will it still get OTA updates?
I ask because I used to have a HTC Desire HD, and after rooting and installing Cyanogenmod, I tried to put the Nandroid backup of the stock rom back on, which was fine but for some reason wouldn't install the OTA updates. It would tell me there was an update and download it, but would fail to install.
Thanks!

If it does install you will loose root... But I believe if the system is found to be custom in any way it will fail on install of OTA or will actually tell you that the phone has been modified and no updates available for you

Thanks for the reply. Just out of curiosity about the HTC Desire HD that has since been given to a less tech-savvy relative, is there a way to unroot so the OTA update will work??
I rooted my N3 3 days after buying and then tried to get an OTA update. It didn't download first, as my phone was set to custom. After using Wanam's setting to "reset" the custom status, I could download the OTA update but couldn't install it.
Basically, with root you can still check if there's an official update available, but you can't install.

Anyone know how it actually tells if the phone has been rooted? Surely there's a way to reset it to unrooted/non-custom state so OTA updates work again...

The boot loader and the os itself scan for certain things such as modified kernel/recovery or installation of busy box.
The Samsung's aren't so bad, you can just flash back the stock rom and factory reset to start getting ota updates again. On htc phones you have to unlock the boot loader to root and its a one way process. Once unlocked you can never get ota updates again.

i have the same problem here, i would like to update MK2 but i cant.
used wanam exposed for fake > failed @ installation.
do i have to unroot or factory reset for update?
i dont want to install a cwm at the moment.
thx
Once you have rooted, the system partition has been modified so Samsung doesnot allow you to OTA update. It checks MD5hash for the consistency. Factory reset doesn't help because it only format userdata partition.
If you r rooted, better go to sammobile.com, download the latest firmware version, copy it to sdcard and flash via Mobile Odin Pro. This way you can keep the old bootloader so you can fallback (downgrade) to the older firmware later.
Thank you.
what is when i tripped the knox count?
Its 0x1 now. I was on new bootloader before.

Ok you have to downlaod the original stock rom and flash with odin.
After that root it again. Everything fine now. knox trigger 0x1 at the moment.

I need to keep Knox at 0x0.
There must be a way of updating.
A couple of people have mentioned downloading from SamMobile and flashing back to stock. If I do this, what happens to twrp?
If twrp stays, I don't want it conflicting with a non-rooted phone (due to flashing stock) and being bricked
U can get upgrade with kiss not OTA but u must install wanamp exposed n change system into official. Its work on rooted stock rom.

Currently I am on MK2, with root access (stock ATT) I got a notification for software update is available, but when I try to install, it fails in between. Is it because of root access? Please suggest.
Not to be rude, but if you read a little bit of the threads you'd find that you CANNOT install an OTA update while you're rooted!
You have to un-root your phone if you want to install any OTA updates.

Best way to prepare for official OTA is just Odin back to stock, then just accept the update, 2 step process easy as pie. Tar files are here on XDA, but your search button seems to be broken so let me help you.
Here you go. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2621279 Good luck.

Thanks for your response. I kept the ODIN back to stock as last option. Just want to make sure that, that is the way to do it. I just dont want to go back to stock, if there is an another option.

Sorry buddy, but there is no other way. If you want to update to official stock 4.4.2 Kit Kat firmware, you must be on official stock firmware. If you'd rather not be stock, then stay on MK2 like many of us are doing until we have root. I imagine it will be in the not too distant future. Look at the progress these developers have made in just a few days. It's remarkable.

You're welcome.. Glad everything worked out for you to be able to update.
Hello. I have a Verizon Galaxy S4 SCH-i545 on 4.4.2 and NC2. My phone is rooted. There is supposed to be updates for my phone so I can go to more recent versions like NK1. However, when I go to the "About phone" menu and check for updates, it says there are no updates for my phone. Kies has also said I have the latest version, when it should be NK1. I even tried the Verizon software that comes with the phone, but it says, "Your firmware is not compatible for updating". My phone used to be on Hyperdrive, a custom ROM, but I went back to stock with ODIN. I have not gotten updates that I am supposed to get. Is there a way to force upgrade my phone? What can I do to get to the latest version? Thank you.
Unroot the phone. You must be totally stock for OTA updates to work. If you don't want to unroot, apply your phone's update through Odin.

Thank you very much for your reply. So it won't update because I am rooted? How would I unroot my phone? Also, how would I update through ODIN? Again, thank you.
As long as the phone has a custom status (i.e. rooted) you won't get any updates. Your other questions can be answered with a good search in the site's search engine. But I'll give you a hint: download the latest ROM image from sammobile.com and install it through Odin. It upgrades your phone but also unroots it.
Same way you installed the original stock firmware.
Download the latest update and flash it with Odin. There have to be some guides somewhere.
And for the unrooting, you probably have the supersu app. The app has an unroot option in the setttings, as far as I know. Try that.
If all else fails, reinstall stock rom with Odin, but don't root it until you update.

Thank you for your reply. I just successfully unrooted my phone. However, it still will not let me update. It still says NC2 is the latest version. What do I do?
