AT&T unable to update software - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Currently I am on MK2, with root access (stock ATT) I got a notification for software update is available, but when I try to install, it fails in between. Is it because of root access? Please suggest.

Not to be rude, but if you read a little bit of the threads you'd find that you CANNOT install an OTA update while you're rooted!
You have to un-root your phone if you want to install any OTA updates.

Best way to prepare for official OTA is just Odin back to stock, then just accept the update, 2 step process easy as pie. Tar files are here on XDA, but your search button seems to be broken so let me help you.
Here you go. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2621279 Good luck.

Thanks for your response. I kept the ODIN back to stock as last option. Just want to make sure that, that is the way to do it. I just dont want to go back to stock, if there is an another option.

Sorry buddy, but there is no other way. If you want to update to official stock 4.4.2 Kit Kat firmware, you must be on official stock firmware. If you'd rather not be stock, then stay on MK2 like many of us are doing until we have root. I imagine it will be in the not too distant future. Look at the progress these developers have made in just a few days. It's remarkable.

[Q] Galaxy S4 Root

I rooted my AT&T Galaxy S4 i337 a while back using Motochopper and it worked absolutely fine. After installing Cyanogenmod, I decided to go back to stock. I used triangle away and Odin to return myself back to stock, however, I always had issues. When I would recovery boot, I got an error and I couldn't wipe my cache partition. I tried to re-root my phone today using Motochopper and then Odin, but neither of them worked. I got a fail on both of them. Motochopper installed Supersu on my device, but didn't actually give me root access, and Odin just gave me a fail. Now, my phone is working with stock, but I still get errors in recovery mode and I can't root. Can someone please help!?

That's what i was afraid of. With mf3 you can't root with motorchopper or flash roms like you could on mdl. You also can't put on a custom recovery. Give me a second and I'll give you some links.

MF3 has a completely different root and recovery method now. Search the threads and you'll find them. Unfortunately it's pretty risky as you won't be able to flash back to stock using ODIN on MF3.

Ok, so I read the links. Now, I'm not so much interested in rooting as I am getting my phone straight. Is there any way to get back to mdl? Will the rumored 4.3 update this month fix that? When I tried to update or recover with Samsung Kies, it said my phone wasn't compatible to recover. Does that mean I won't be able to get the update?

First, there is no way to go back to mdl. Idk if you'll be able to get the 4.3 update but I would assume so since you are on the stick firmware now. But, each new update is going to make it harder to root your phone or run custom roms. So you probably need to choose whether you want to keep your phone stock and take updates if and when they come out. Or have some snooty to run custom roms and root your device and put safestrap on.

Shouldn't, your stock mf3 right now.

i messed up bid time

so I have been on vision x rom for last couple months. I had a guy flash the stock rom back on my phone and now I have an att update aprox 359mb ready to install BUT I cannot update it. after update completes it boots into twrp. how can I uninstall twrp or is it something I missing. thanks for your help in advance. Do you know what firmware you're on? I don't what stock rom the guy flashed but it must not have been the stock firmware or you wouldn't have twrp.

Your are on mdb firmware. If flashing custom roms is important to you what I would do is use Odin to upgrade you to mdl firmware. That is probably the same firmware that you have the update for based on its small size. If you use Odin you will lose root and twrp. But you'll be able to put those back on.

If you run into problems just ask. The firmware you can get from sammobile.com. You have to register but it's free.

Are you sure you want to take that update (I'm assuming it's the MF3 update)?
If you do, you will be limited to using safestrap and the custom roms you can flash in the future.
If you stay at MDL, you can still install a custom 4.3 rom (or the stock 4.3 release without bootloaders once it's available).
You can even install stock MF3 without the bootloaders from the dev section to get the update.
If you want to have an unlocked bootloader and have complete freedom to flash whatever you want on your phone, you only want to update to MDL as mentioned above and not take the MF3 update.
Once your at official OTA MF3, your bootloader is locked and there is no turning back (just trying to help and make sure you are aware of what happens if you take the OTA and upgrade to MF3).
Good Luck

People have done it successfully, but the OTA only installs if your system files weren't modified at all. I couldn't the OTA to install - probably due to changes I made in Xposed. I'm going down the leak KK route for now.

OTA failed for me as well. I have removed or frozen just about anything Verizon. Waiting for the MD5 firmware from Sammobile to download so I can try to Odin the file
SuperSu survival mode
Well, I took the leap.. downloaded the md5 file from sammobile and flashed via Odin.
Alas this is not the way to keep root. I no longer have root. And now have all the bloat from Verizon back on the phone.
So much for trying to be a pioneer.
Now where did I put that hammer.....

Does anyone have any tips or what to look for if the update keeps failing?
I had Xposed Framework installed...and I think that's the only thing that I had installed that modifies system files...but I uninstalled it's modifications from within the framework app itself, then unistalled the framework apk, then all of the module apk's, then I disabled SU, but the update still won't take...
Anyone have any ideas without losing all my stuff?
Thanks!

I just wanted to report back and say everything went great and I am now on NC4 with root! Yay!
Just for the record, in SuperSU I had set SuperSU to DISABLED, then set the Survival Mode to ON, then set default action to DENY. Not sure if that matters, but that's what I had and it worked.
Thanks for the tips everyone!

To clarify, how did you finally get the OTA to take in the first place? I did the same as you - uninstalled Xposed modules and framework, reverted framework-res, disabled SU, unfroze any applications, but OTA failed.
EDIT: Or did you Odin back, then disable SU, then OTA? Just confirming before I do it
Thanks!
If you really want to keep root I would not flash NC4 at all, you're risking the possibility of never getting it back. No one has found any major changes from NC2 to NC4 so you really won't be gaining much but could lose a lot.

Yeah, I hear ya. I generally like to just stay stock+root, though, so staying with the official OTA is generally my preferred route. Might just wait and see what comes out in the next few days.

[Q] Little help for Un-rooting & returning to stock 4.4.2

I'm looking for some help to return to stock on my Note 3. I'm a very casual rooter and don't flash any ROM's. The only reason I rooted in the past was to get free WiFi tether but we now have that for free on our account (family plan.) My wife also has the Note 3, completely stock, and has gotten several updates and is now on lollipop.
I rooted about a year ago, maybe 14 months. I used a method that at the time was very popular here... safestrap and Odin. Easy to follow. I've rooted every phone I've had going back to the original Droid but I've never gone this long without returning to stock so I'm a little worried about the process. Everything is backed up and ready to go on the device.
I would like to return to stock and then take the OTA's up to Lollipop.
This is my current setup:
Safestrap 3.72 (TWRP v2.7.0.0)
"Stock" boot option
4 Empty ROM slots
SM-N900V
Phone 4.4.2
Baseband: N900VVRUCNC2
Kernel: 3.4.0
Build: KOT49H.N900VVRUCNC2
Hardware:N900V.07
SuperSU v2.46
As a side note, what's the current thoughts about lollipop, if I take the OTA's up to it am I hosed if I were to want to root? (Not my plan but just in case) Are there benefits over 4.4.2, should I just stay where I am?
Thanks!

Unrooting will make your phone as it was before (loose root access) and you'll be able to update your phone through OTA's.
If you love rooting then you can reroot your device after update.
If you found this helpful, there's a thumbs up button, just press it.

As a side note, what's the current thoughts about lollipop, if I take the OTA's up to it am I hosed if I were to want to root? (Not my plan but just in case) Are there benefits over 4.4.2, should I just stay where I am?
Thanks!

Don't take the update if you want root! After 4.4.4 you will be stuck until someone finds an exploit, which may never come. Hopefully its not too late!

This will allow me to take the OTA's? Thank you for the help! For some reason I thought I had to use ODIN to restore to factory?

Let me know if this works for you. The only reason I rooted really was to change my DPI and I could do without it at this point. I can't update some apps and can't install some now, says my device is not compatible. I have the same setup as you except I have NC4.

If this works for you guys, please let me know. I am on NC4 wanting to get to Lollipop. I know I wont have root, but I can do without for a while. Thanks in advance!

Unrooting will make your phone as it was before (loose root access) and you'll be able to update your phone through OTA's.
If you love rooting then you can reroot your device after update.
If you found this helpful, there's a thumbs up button, just press it.

Ok, going to try this tonight.. sorry for the long delay in responding. I'm going to be trying the Super Su method, according to Hitman-XDA it will work for me. My last question is will this also unlock my phone along with unrooting? Currently I am unlocked and rooted.. I mainly want to return to stock to nab OTA's that I've missed out on. Also my VM is broken and I'm fairly positive that will fix it.
Ok, I did not use the SuperSU unroot feature, I read quite a bit more and from what I came to understand it would not work.
I used ODIN to flash a stock version of 4.4.2, that worked great and fully unrooted me. It did not re-lock my bootloader but 4.4.4 OTA was waiting and it locked the bootloader in the process of updating. Then I got 3 or 4 updates taking me all the way to 5.0 with no issues.
Heads up, from what I could find there is only 1 place to download a stock 4.4.2 firmware, rapidgator... it sucks and was really slow to DL. I let it go overnight. When done unzip it, use ODIN and G2G.
Can you upload the firmware file to mega.co.nz ? and share the link?

S5 root with marshmallow

What's going to happen to my SM-G900I thats got root (running stock) when it receives the marshmallow update. Sorry for the simple question. Thanks
marshmallow update
Hey there! your root will probably be lost if you accept the OTA (over the air) marshmallow. My best advice to you is this:
1. DON'T accept the update. (caps lock for emphasis only). You, as the subscriber, can only accept the update. The carrier can't "force update' your phone without your permission.
2. wait until a dev "captures" the update and "injects" the root (if available) in the marshmallow stock rom.
3. as a rooted user myself, exercise your due patience and wait it out. don't *ask* for ETA from a dev -- it's mean. =)
I hope this helps. =)
You won't get OTA updates if you're rooted, you'll have to update manually then root again

So I will have to do a full unroot to get the update normally, and would manually updating just be flashing the stock mm rom?

Full unroot doesn't seem to revert the device "Custom" status, which is what stops the OTA, to "Official" which is the status needed for OTA
The only way to return the device to Official is to flash a stock ROM with ODIN, that will unroot you and return the device to Official and OTA will work
And yes, Flashing manually is flashing a stock ROM with ODIN

Ohhh I understand now, thanks Durham. So I take it when I flash the new one with ODIN I will loose everything on my phone or can I do a dirty install and keep everything.

You only lose anything custom, like root or recovery, all your apps and files etc are safe
