I have a simple quiz app on android, I want the data to be fetched as fast as possible from web server to the client. What I'm thinking of is to put my server to a laptop and fetch the data locally by the android device using WLAN connection of a pocket wifi to make the fetching and sending of data as fast as possible or do I need to completely host my web server online which require internet connection and the speed of fetching and sending of data vary on the speed of my connection which also not very fast and reliable in my country.
Anyone can help me with this?
Yeah as long as you only use the app yourself then the thing with the laptop works, assuming you know how to make the laptop work as a server of course, but when you decide that other people that dont have physical access to your house should access the data, then you must of course have your data on some sort of online server, be it a server at home or a hosted one

Hello
After activate the ICS on wm6 (HTC pharos 100 wm6.1 ?? ), my netbook eeepc under mandriva 2008.1, mount correctly the BNEP0 interface ...
on linux EEEpc I can :
ping www.google.comnslookup 72.14.207.99
the route command print correctly the default gateway to bnep0
but I can't browse with Firefox or Opera (preferences are Direct connected to internet)
I try using wget ... connection refused
I try wget with different port but same message.
On another linux box, connected with ethernet, the same command start saving html page, as normal ...
I suppose it's a firewall problem, but how to modify the WM6 firewall ? (no firewall started on linux)
Could it be a provider lock ?(french BouyguesTelecom)? (my htc is new)
Regards
I reply to myself ...
after some tests ... and 1 web page loaded sucessfully :
my connection is apparently with EDGE, and I don't have constant connection ...
I start ping ... google reply 5 times .... and mothing during 30seconds, and ping again ...
when pinging, the web page can be load ... after, web browser wait, and go into timeout ...
I will find if we can increase timeout on linux Opera web browser (Firefox have a really small timeout minus than Opera)
I will ask to Bouyguestelecom, about this network issue.
in fact Bouygue Telecom, block modem phone usage, with standard Web & Surf option.
To resolve this :
1> trying to modify the User-Agent of linux browser (I try 1 time but don't works)
2> subscribe to the "Data Pocket" option which allow the modem phone usage
I try the 1st solution using
wget --user-agent="Opera mobil;......." but still have the :80 connection refused
Is anyone have a good solution to user the wget parameters ?
Solution found!!!
Hey I know it's an old post but I have been stuck in the same situation as the OP for weeks until I found a solution.
I got full internet connectivity by setting the PAN (bnep0) connection's MTU to the bluetooth connection's ACLMTU value and it worked first time!!!!!!!!!
Until then I believed my SIM card or phone was locked or my provider limited internet connection sharing but the solution was simple and as described above!!!!!
Anyone wanting more detailed information about this can address me in the forum or PM medirectly!!!
Is there a browser for Android that does not block ports or will allow you to unblock a certain port? Like Firefox blocks many ports and it looks like most Android browsers do also. Anyone know any work around?

Browsers also block ports for your own "protection" See here:

Yeah, looks like a pretty stupid idea if you ask me - I do not know the answer to your dilemma though.

That page is really, really old. The CERT advisory is from 2001, and the page is a part of netlib, which references the Netscape browser. I would be surprised if any browser now is blocking any application from communicating through a port. You might check your firewall rules.
I'm running Firefox posting this right now on my laptop, and I can POP, IMAP, SSH, ftp, nntp, tftp, etc. just fine.
The browser isn't blocking ports, T-mobile is.
Hello all
Probably the question has been ask´d but here it goes...
is there allready a way do acess an on-line MySql DB from the android ?
I need to design an app to fetch and post data from a bd...
any ideas ?
ty all
You may find the following link to be helpful: http://shariqmobin.wordpress.com/2010/03/06/hello-world/
That requires some fiddling with firewalls and allowing external connections to your MySQL DB. If you're not comfortable with that (or not allowed by the DB server admin), you could consider creating a simple webservice or script to supply specific data from your DB.

i will take a look @ it.
i do have acess to the db as we own the server where the db is
i´ll keep you guys posted

RemoteDB (market). For extra security, connect to the host via ssh with ConnectBot and tunnel port 3306. It works, and I use it all the time.
It's a ***** to get it working the first time if you're new to ssh and/or tunneling, but it means you don't have to directly expose your database to the Internet. I *highly* recommend getting Toad to work with PUTTY before attempting it via Android, though.

I, like many here, have received a notice about tethering usage. I was working on a non-related project for someone who is heading to China so that they could bypass TGFoC when I had the following idea. If I can pass a computer in China through my SSH server to get internet access, why can't I do the same within the WebTop environment?
I know that in the WebTop environment, the phone window still has a valid connection to my carrier (AT&T, as the case may be), although the Webtop environment does not unless you pay for the double-dipping fee for tether usage. Here's what I did to get internet access on my phone (in Firefox) and it appears to work for me (YMMV):
===Things you'll need:===
Phone with WebTop
ConnectBot installed on the phone
Valid credentials to a box you can SSH to as well as create port forwards on
===Procedure===
1 On the phone, setup the ConnectBot ahead of time for the connection to the server.
2 Create a port forward
2a Name it anything you want (I called my WebProxy)
2b Type should be dynamic (SOCKS)
2c Source port is set to 8080. Any unused port should be fine, but this is the one I used
2d Destination is unchanged
3 Open up Webtop. Although untested, I see no reason why Webtop via HDMI shouldn't work.
4 Within the Mobile view window, connect to your server and ensure that the port forward is enabled (a disabled one has a line through it)
5 Open the Preferences of the WebTop's Firefox
6 Click on Advanced->Network->Settings
7 Change the proxy to be SOCKS and use 127.0.0.1 as the IP and the same port number as you selected in step 2c
8 If you want the DNS requests to work, you may wish to change that within about:config (look for "network.proxy.socks_remote_dns" and set it to true)
Your FF should now pass all its traffic through ConnectBot's SSH connection.
===Caveats===
1 All your network traffic from Firefox will be slower due to your SSH server acting as proxy.
2 You obviously need a desktop/ server machine that is reachable all the time. This may not be cost effective if this is its only use.
3 I do not claim that this is undetectable, only that it works. If another person more knowledgeable in this could comment, I'd appreciate it.
Thoughts?
I'm having occasional issues with ConnectBot not creating the port forward while on mobile data, and I'm thinking it may be timing related. Could anyone assist?

Solved my own problem. I had a dying Atrix phone previously. My tutorial above works perfectly on my new phone.
This really helped me!
Thanks a lot, it worked (although I can't find a "thanks" button).
But I don't get one little thing. Why we have to set the proxy to "source port"? In my (obviously mistaken) mind, it should be the destination port.
On a computer ssh command we would use something like:
ssh -ND [port-passed-to-proxy] [email protected]
I'm a bit confused by the name "source" to the port being passed to the proxy as I see it the other way around.

Well, I think the confusion lies in possibly the way you're looking at it. From connectBot's viewpoint, it's going to be passing all data that hits the source port via its connection. Firefox's proxy port, and what I'd consider to be a destination port from its point of view, would be the connectBot's source port.
I'm not a developer, but I play one on TV.
can i set my any app on androoid phone appropriate packet data internet i buy from operator celular.
ex: social packet : only can facebook, im, twitter and other social network
bussines packet : only can use mail, im
