[Q] Help: Can't Answer First call if phone is asleep - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My friend has a new stock s5 and can not answer calls if the phone is asleep(screen off)
The phone rings and the screen turns on with the answer slider.
He slides the answer call and then it just sits there for a few seconds like it is frozen, but never answers the call.
He can then call the number back and everything works fine, or if the person who called calls back while the screen is still on then he can answer just fine.
We live in a village in alaska (phone company is GCI) which only has edge data.
When he is in anchorage he can answer calls just fine even when the phone is asleep.
He has put his sim card in his old iphone and it works fine.
His wife got an S5 at the same time and both of their phones have the same exact issue.
I have no problems in the same area with my old S2 or my newer S4.
Any idea on what he can change in order to answer calls the first time?

No thoughts or ideas on this issue?

I also have this same issue. It does it when its asleep and it also does it when its awake. For some reason it just wont slide over to answer its weird. Mine doesnt do it every time it does it 3 out of 4 times though.

There have only been a very small number of reports across several phone models of this behaviour.. and AFAIK no one has elucidated a pattern that would elucidate a cause with any certainty. I can tell you that my 900T with the Phoenix ROM does not have this issue.
Unfortunately, no one who has posted with this issue has provided nearly enough details about their configuration to narrow anything down but as pure speculation it may just be a delay in waking up that effectively misses the window in which you could answer the call. If so, then debloated ROMs, faster data connections and those utilizing less power saving features i.e. typically throttling the active processor would likely see the problem less or not at all.
.

Perhaps try reducing the proximity sensor delay time. In theory that may reduce the transition time from screen saver to dialer /home screen.
Edit (or add if not present) build.prop
Code:
mot.proximity.delay=0
ro.lge.proximity.delay=25
ro.telephony.call_ring.delay=0
ring.delay=0
.
.

Ring Delays Problem?

So i have had my hero for a couple of months now, and ive been noticing i get voicemail notifications without my phone ever even ringing, i was hoping u guys could help me out and to see if you guys have the same problem
so i had my friend sitting right next to me and he called me, it took like 8+ rings on his side before my phone actually began ringing on my side and then after 2 rings that i heard on my side the phone went straight to voicemail.
but it didnt happen all the time, sometimes my phone rang right after we heard 2 rings on his side, which i think is normal
now i use google voice, i was wondering if you guys experience this as well? and if so do u use google voice or normal voicemail.
also i think its worth to mention i changed my phones meid to match my old lg rumor. so it is a cloned phone, but the original donor phone is always off with the battery out.
this problem sucks cuz people call me and in essence i dont pick up their calls because my phone sometimes doesnt ring n people think i ignore them...
I haven't ever had that problem (and I also use GV). But you can change your slot cycle to tell it to poll the tower more often which might help you. Now there is going to be an extra delay because of GV, but it shouldn't take 8 rings. If this doesn't work then there might be something causing a slow down on your phone which is why it takes a while to realize it's ringing, or it might be the MEID swap causing strange things.
##3282# Set slot cycle index to 1. Your phone will poll towers more often and will respond to incoming texts and calls faster.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1391130
this was set to 2 so hopefully this works, what about 0?
0 might drain your batt faster then normal
So I went to "##3282#" to make a change and it wouldnt let edit anything because it asks for password, anybody know what could be the password?
The password is actually your phones individual MSL#. It can be obtained by calling Sprints tech support. They might refuse to give it to you, but just tell them what you want it for and they probably will.
had my MSL thankfully since i make notes for all my sprint calls.
thanks for this tip - hope it helps me out too!
I just did this, lets see what happens.
Any updates on this? I am set to 0 for slot cylcle but consistently get more than 2 rings before my phone rings.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think slot 0 is reserved for police and other first responders. You're not supposed to use it without permission.
I believe I read somewhere that changing the slot cycle index on the phone itself will not actually change anything, except that it may drain your battery faster. As I understand it, the tower's setting for that attribute will override end-user devices' settings.
FWIW, I changed it on my Hero, and it made exactly zero difference in the ring delay (timed in seconds). If you watch a timestamped kernel debug log when a call comes in, you can see that it simply takes the phone a long time to get its sh*t together and start ringing. This is common across HTC phones. Piss-poor design for a phone if you ask me.
My phone takes 2-3 rings on the callers end before my phone rings, this would be fine if it didn't go to voice mail after 6 rings. Is there any way to change how many times the phone rings before it goes to VM?

According to Sprint's latest answer, "no". With past phones, Sprint HAS changed that parameter for me. My previous phone would ring for more than 60 seconds before going to voicemail. Sprint now tells me that is not possible, nor was it ever possible. Obviously, it *was* possible. I didn't just imagine that it would ring for a full minutes.
The ring configuration is actually managed by number of seconds before voicemail, as the number of rings depends completely on what ringtone you use. I forget exactly what number they have it configured for currently (I know its less than 30s), although I do remember that the Hero itself only rings for exactly half of the Sprint-specific time. Sprint did acknowledge that that Hero (and other smartphones) have a problem with the ring time, but they offered no suggestions to fix it.
I was going to use this method to try to reduce my ring delay. When I put in ##DATA# nothing happens on my phone. I know the debug codes work because I can put in *#*#4636#*#* and it brings up a screen. Any ideas why this code doesn't work?

Negative, that is the Access Overload Class.
I have my slot index set to 0 and my ACCOLC set to 2. I make it a full day without charging for whatever it is worth.

SCI - Slot Cycle Index - This determines how often a handset polls thenetwork for coverage and incoming packets. The default value is 2. A"Slot" is 1.28 seconds and doubles with each incremental change from 0to 7 (0=1.28, 1=2.56, 2=5.12 seconds, etc). setting a handset to pollmore often may use noticibly more battery if coverage is thin orlacking.
ACCOLC - Access Overload Class - This code determines your priority tomake and receive calls on the network. Higher the number, lower thepriority. Lower the number, higher the priority. I found this thread on the EVO forum and decided WTH I'll try it. Worst that can happen is I have to go back to the stock prl cause it doesn't work. However when I tried it, I have significantly less ring delay "lag" and not one call has gone directly to VM. Hope it helps everyone that is having this problem. Please report back with results.
BTW I had no hand in figuring this out I am just passing on my findings. all credit goes to techknowfile.

I tried this just for the heck of it and not 10 minutes after I rebooted I kept getting "Error 67 Data Call Failure your Sprint PCS Vision user name or password is wrong"
Maybe I did something wrong, but as soon as I put 60065 back on my phone it went away.
For reference I am in Knoxville, TN

Luckily the area I live in has excellent sprint coverage (better than big red) Just wish we had 4g...one day...
This problem is the main reason why I will be abandoning my hero soon. I have tried at least a dozen different roms and have yet to find one where the phone function ACTUALLY WORKS............ WTF?? My phone usually rings for 2-7 seconds before going to voicemail in a good coverage area, and normally not at all when I'm at my house (poor coverage). I'm currently using the latest Fresh ROM (2.1.2), have done the slot-cycle mod, and have flashed the overclocked kernel, all to no avail. It may be a fine data device, but is a pretty damn pathetic phone.
Heck, I've even cleared my call history (which at 3 weeks old was long enough to lag the dialer for 4-5 seconds every time it was pulled up), and that hasn't helped. It also doesn't help that the phone app crashes on about 1/3 incoming calls.

[Q]Dialer hangs up tone then continue dialing

I've been using my Nexus 4 since Friday and must say that it's the best phone that I've ever used (especially coming from an Xperia ray).
Anyways, I have one problem (well, more of a minor issue). I dial a phone number, hangup tone immediately happens and a quick nano second CALL ENDED, then the phone automatically redials and it goes through.
I think it looks like I've cut up my SIM too short (will take a photo later when I get home from work) because the SIM does not full take up the whole space in the SIM tray. The SIM contact is intact though, just some white plastic parts that were cut up too much.
Another possible issue causing this problem is that I'm using a $20 Telus corporate (data is blocked cause I don't really have real need at this moment, using a MiFi from WIND) and the signal bars are grey instead of blue.
That hangup tone prevents me from using apps like Call Timer which worked perfectly on my Xperia ray. I can still call and make text messages.
Should I buy a new microSIM or even worry about this at all?
Bump
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Just started getting this on mine too... gonna flash to some CyanogenMod later to see if that does anything. I am 100% sure it wasn't happening when I first got my phone, i cut down my old SIM to fit and that worked fine for a few days. Not sure when but think it was before i got a brand new MicroSIM to replace the old one but i could be wrong. I've put the same SIM in my SGS2 and it doesn't do that issue, i also just did a factory reset and it did it right away too.
Calls still go through but it's just annoying as hell, lol. Makes me look like I called 6 times or something when it's only 2-3 sometimes.
I've also tried switching to EDGE just incase it was a 3G issue and no dice.
Add me to that list. When I press send button phone starts calling and miliseconds later it says ended call and other miliseconds later starts the call again.. So annoing because i use a call recorder and its saving 2 calls (and empty one and the real call) and apps like call timer works bad with this issue

[Q] Phone Beeping Tone During Calls

Greetings Everyone,
I've had this issue with my S4 since I got it. During every phone call, at random times, it sounds like someone is hitting a button on their phone causing an annoying tone beep, like someone is pressing the 4 button. My phone is always locked during the phone call and I've asked if the other person could have hit the key which they always say no. This is HIGHLY annoying as it happens during every call. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be the cause of this?
Thanks in advance!

maybe it is your alerts? Did you try going to Settings of the dialer, and switching off "minute minder" and "alert during calls" under "call alerts" menu?

Really strange then, never heard of this. Maybe you are calling a landline, and two people pick up on the other end, and one of them accientally hits some keys before hanging up.
I am out of guesses. :/

Nope, not using Google Voice and am always talking to people on their cell phones. I rarely call landline phones anymore. I have pretty much all notification settings turned off also. I'm at a loss here
I have this EXACT problem.
Happens on my S3 as well. I replaced sim cards but that doesn't do anything. I'm guessing its something with att

I always thought it was a problem with the other persons service, but I was on the phone with HP tech support for work and I was on speakerphone with the phone laying on the desk and the guy kept asking me if I was pressing the dial tone buttons. That's when I was certain it's a problem with something on AT&T. Or just a weird problem that both my S3 and S4 have.
Which dialer are you using? I also had this same issue on my Galaxy Nexus. Haven't had the issue on the S4 yet

I am completely stock just rooted.
So glad to hear I'm not the only one having the issue. I'm calling AT&T today to see what they say. Maybe it's just a jacked up phone. I'll keep you guys posted on what they say.
I have the same characteristic on my HTC One, so it's not unique to the S4. For the moment, I'm thinking it's just a tone corresponding to notifications, but I'll be following the thread with interest. Please report your finding.
ETA: Won't the joke be on all of us if we find out its the NSA listening in on our conversations?
I have the same issue with the key tones. I hear them randomly and it is so annoying. It all started when I got a warranty replacement Galaxy S3. I thought because the S3 might be a refurb. that is why it was doing this key tones. So I signed a contract and got the Galaxy S4 and the problem did not end. I had EIGHT different S4's, SIX different sim cards, did many hard resets, made two different google accounts, tried another phone, changed my phone number, and changed my account with ATT. IT STILL DOES THE NOISE!!!!! HELP ME PLEASE!!! SOMEONE!!!
Interesting... I had the exact same thing with my Sprint Galaxy S3. I hadn't pressed keys on my end, and the person on the other end (different people) always swore they hadn't pressed anything.
I haven't noticed it (yet) on my AT&T S4, but it is definitely not specific to AT&T. My S3 wasn't even rooted - completely stock. Maybe something in the more recent updates from Samsung that is going out to all the carriers?
Edit: Scratch my thought about Samsung, I see someone above mentioned the HTC One.
AT&T sent me out a HTC One to try on weds and the first convo I had with someone the key tones were there. The guy at AT&T thought it might have been my 4G LTE signal and he made my phone just 3G because he thought it was the common feature with all the phones but even with just the 3G it still does it. Im at a lost! Every time I hear the key tones I want to throw the phone against the nearest wall.
Have it on my S3, on Straight Talk AT&T sim
I've been searching and searching for an answer for this. I've had my phone since February, and this beeping only started in the past couple of months. Someone suggested it was the minute minder, but that is turned off on my phone. I've exhausted all options anyone has posted, and I guess I just have to deal with it. I'm starting to think it's the NSA thing...
By the way, my friend has heard the beeps on their end, as well but don't hear it on calls with other people so it doesn't seem to be their iPhone. Imagine that...still doesn't make me want one!
Notification beeps?

Looks like it might have something to do with "DTMF" Touch tones. In a google search, I am running across many people talking about this issue and addressing it as DTMF but haven't found a solution. Many search hits!
If anybody else wants to try and run it down further, search for DTMF tones during call or similar.

I have been searching this everywhere. I am starting to think you are right. I went back as far as 2009 though. Initially it was reported with VOIP phones. So I wonder if on the back end companies are beginning to integrate technologies.
Regardless it's annoying! I'm so glad I'm not the only one!
Similar problem, with details.
I've been having a similar issue with key tone sounds during calls as well. I'm with PureTalk USA and have been fine for over a year now, then this started happening. The problem for me began with getting a new call forwarding number because my voicemail began having issues. I noticed I was hearing intermittent sounds like a key being dialed during calls. I checked my settings, nothing indicated the phone had any kind of minute minder active. Because the beeping is irregular that wouldn't make sense anyway. During a call last night, for example, I must have heard it more than 30 times in an hour, many of those times in clusters of 4-7 in the space of only 5 minutes. This happens with incoming and outgoing calls, to any carrier, to even calls to PureTalk customer service.
The other thing I wanted to add was that this was not just with one phone. My regular handset is the unlocked Google Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I took out the sim and put it into my old Nokia GoPhone, and the problem persisted. The Nokia is not a smart phone, and the setting have never been tampered with, and the last time I'd used that phone I had never had this issue.
PureTalk has done little to resolve this matter, stating that the problem is with the handset settings, even though I've explained that I've had this error with my smart phone and with a dumb phone, but they insist the issue is on my end. Since going to their tech support my data has stopped working as well, which was a consequence of their doing an account reset to attempt to resolve my problem. They again tell me this is an issue with my handset and not on their end, despite the account reset changing nothing on my phone. Other tech support ideas such as sending a new sim card and wiping my phone didn't help, not that it would have since the error is on multiple phones, through two sim cards.
Going to switch carriers, thinking TMobile. If PureTalk is convinced my issue is in my handset and continues closing the ticket I don't see that this will ever be resolved.

Well, if it is in fact the NSA eavesdropping on our conversations, then color me disappointed. You think they'd do a better job of covering their tracks. No sense in covert surveillance if you're gonna be announcing it every few minutes with an audible tone.

Need Opinions And Thoughts Please

Ok ive been pulling my hair out for a while with this problem so im really hoping you guys can give me some answers or suggestions to help me fix it My Girlfriend has the Galaxy S5 SM-G900V. Baseband version G900VVRU2BOG5 So rooting or custom ROMS is out of the question so that leaves me with trying to diagnose and eliminate this problem without a easy way out.
Ok the problem is once she updated the phone to lollipop she had all the common problems that come with it over time i have slowly eliminated them with factory resets and cache cleaning and such although i have one problem that not even verizon can figure out. The phone itself with occassionally and randomly just refuse to make or receive calls its a very odd problem because the phone will send and receive sms and mms just fine when this happens but when we try to dial out it just sits at dialing and never connects, when calls are dialed into the phone it will ring 5 times or so then go to voice mail or just go straight to voicemail altogether without ever ringing the s5 shows no sign of anyone ever trying to call at all no ringing no records nothing. Once in a blue moon it will ring 4 times on the dial in and then the s5 will start ringing around the 5th ring which is extremely long time IMO. This happens very randomly and in all different locations i have disabled call blocking and auto reject i have tried safe mode to only experience the same problems, i have factory reset several times. Verizon opened a ticket with there tier 2 techs and network development team to check out the issue they tell us everything is completely fine and theres nothing they can see wrong. But they do not deny the problem is there they just cant explain it. Now get this, This is the second phone that has done this to her Ther first one had the same problem and was warranty claimed this is the second phone and same exact issues. Im not sure what else i can do i am a very tech savy person and this one has got me stumped the only thing i can see thats odd for me is the phone has 3 Phone services running in the background But I believe this may have something to do with the Touchwiz Easy Or Regular Home UI althought im not sure why it would use seperate apps. Anyway any input would be helpful Thanks

No Call Notification

Haven't had a lot of luck with questions here for the last little while, but maybe someone has an idea as to why this would happen. My wife tried to call me 6 times yesterday. Not a single call came through or registered on my S7 Edge. She said all calls immediately went through to voice mail. When she got home, she stood right beside me and tried again and again, I was not notified of the call and it went right through to voice mail.
The phone had recently been rebooted. DND was not on. All sounds were on. The phone is not rooted and no apps like Greenify or anything like that running. After her last unsuccessful call to me, standing right beside me, I called her and it went through without an issue. She then tried to call me back and it worked. A minute or so later I received notification of her 2 voice mail messages from her previous calls. It's like the phone was in an extreme deep sleep. Which is pretty annoying considering I use the phone as a phone and I need calls to come through when they are made.
I took the phone into my carrier and they gave me a new sim card to try. I didn't have any issues with the previous sim card other than the issue from time to time of the first call I place being dropped and then the second call going through without issue. The signal is not fantastic in our condo, but I've never had someone tell me they have tried to call me and simply gone to vm before, so I don't know of any time of this happening previously. My wife had never had problems calling me before at all.
Anyone know what might have caused this?
No answers to this post,. Guess no one knows. Just another bizarre Samsung issue. Had it happen again today. My wife had to send me a Whatsapp message saying she couldn't call me. She said she called over and over again. No voice mail, no nothing. Never rang on my end or registered a call at all. Phone just didn't work until I called her and then she called me back and it worked. So sick of this thing working when it feels like it. Checked signal Not great, but no better than her signal and she never has any issues. She said she would call, it would just drop. No ringing, no voice mail, no nothing. Just call and then drop sound. Over and over again. Good thing this phone is only a $1000 device. Works great.
I don't have a solution for your problem, but had a similar issue when phoning my wife. It would ring on my side, but not on her side, then goes to voicemail. 2nd or 3rd time the call would go through to her to answer. Her phone wouldn't show any of the other calls. She was with a specific service provider and I moved her over to my provider. That is when the problems started as she was ported over to my provider. In the end it was on the provider's side where the problem was. They made some changes on her number profile and she could receive all calls and not random ones. Don't know the technical side of what the provider did, but they did admit they created her "call profile" incorrectly. Perhaps it's the same with you, that there is a setup on your profile that is not correct.
Thanks for the post, but I have contacted my provider. We use the same provider. Same settings. They reset everything for my phone and I reset everything on my end too. Still no solution. She does not have the same issues. Same phone. Same provider. Just sucks when you don't know if someone is trying to call you or not and if the phone actually works or not. I just want a phone that works all the time without having to worry about it. At the end of the day, that's all this is....a phone. If people can't call, well, that's an issue. I'm currently looking for work so it's even more important now than it's ever been.
Sorry to hear that you went the route of the provider and still no resolution. Maybe someone else can give light on the subject...
