Switch to ART and back to Dalvik - Moto G General

Hello everyone, as the title says I'd like to test out the ART runtime and maybe switch back to Dalvik if I need it. Since I've never done it would be nice to gather some feedbacks from you guys. Also I don't know if doing all of this switch will leave some junk in the memory. Thank you!
P.S. I asked in the worng section, sorry. Someone could move the post in the Q&A?

I went back and forth between the two on a few kitkat phones (inc. G GPE) with no issues really.
there was an issue with some version of Flipboard which would bootloop your device if on ART, think its solved by now, not sure though.

Better stay with dalvik for now we will switch to art once we get L.

Tried both . Could not find any noticeable difference.

when I switched to art, i noticed it takes more ram, about 100MB more or less. although, I never noticed any performance change, positive nor negative, only slightly longer battery. i think i still have problems with google hangout using as default SMS app but not sure if it is because of ART, it might be. as I said, almost no difference except of slightly longer battery and not working hanouts as SMS[which I didn't like in the first place]

I'm using a few apps and according to this site: http://www.androidruntime.com/list none of them are reported to not work on ART. Thanks to anyone for the fast replies. I'll give you feebacks when I give it a shot.

I'm using ART on my phone as default.
The only problem I ever had with ART, was the incompatibility with "Facebook Beta" apart from that, in my experience my phone is more responsive on ART than it is with Dalvik.

In ART i could not move apps to SD. Now back to Dalvik it is possible again.

No Differance
i was running on Dalvik on 4.4.2 and once i updated to 4.4.4 , i reset my Phone and changed to ART, i did not find any reason till now to switch back to Dalvik, although i did not find any noticeable Speed improvement or Better battery life. no force closes except 2-3 times with Subway surfers in this 2 months.

I swiched to ART as soon as i got 4.4, didnt fine any difference

Hey, I'm also using ART, no problems, just I find the battery draining fast. 10 minutes disconnected from charger and battery went down 2%... hope to see any difference in battery when L arrives

i use art when i got an upgdate to 4.4.4 i noticed that all my apps when i open it fast... but sadly i return to dalvik again because everytime i update some application like facebook, gmail.. etc some other apps most of the time my phone restart everytime i make an update it will restart that's why i return to dalvik again

Hello,
You're right.
According "The SDCard Bible for Moto G 4G/LTE" (https://forums.motorola.com/posts/7e59cc7baf), "Move to SD card" doesn't work on ART.
And ART uses a lot more space than Dalvik.
So, unfortunately ART is not a good deal for Moto G 4G/LTE (XT1040), in my opinion.

I haven't found one application I use that wasn't compatible with ART. IMO, there is a noticeable difference between using ART over dalvik. This holds true on the Nexus 5 as well. The Moto G is very smooth with 4.4 Y2FS, and ART enabled. I was quite unhappy with my Moto G running stock with dalvik enabled, but I'm very happy with my current set up. It's nearly as fast as my Nexus 5.

Switched from Dalik to ART....now Storage issues?

I've been running ART over the weekend. So far, I'm very happy and see a nice battery life boost Problem is, changing over seems to have done something with the Android OS size, as it seems to have doubled just about. What's the deal? Is that to be expected, if so will switching back to Dalik solve the problem?
Although ART can be a bit faster and better than Dalvik, it is also know to take more of your device's internal storage. Going back to Dalvik will restore the storage that ART took.

Art vs Dalvik. Anyone tried yet?

This morning I switched from Dalvik to ART just out of curiosity. Took forever to "upgrade apps" after the initial boot and the phone got a little warm during the process. Overall performance is good, though. Possibly better than before. I was having random stutters and this may have smoothed things out, I'm not sure. Anyone else tried ART? What's your experience so far?
Yep,
I tried but switched back to Dalvik. I saw no advantage with ART.
Art was smoother, although some apps refuse to work. Back on dalvik as well

I switched the 2nd day having it so i cant speak much for dalvik but ART has been running like a champ. I have gotten at least 16 hours out of every charge with between 3 and 5.5 hours screen on. I havent had any app compatability problems except for possibly s health. But i uninstalled the latest update to the app and it runs fine again.
On mine dalvik runs way better than art. Saw more issues and higher Temps with art so switched back
I switched to ART over the weekend and didn't really notice a difference performance and battery wise and I ran into a couple apps that wouldn't work, so now I am back on Dalvik. The apps I had issues with was Pandora, Shealth, and Resco Mobile CRM.
Pandora was fixed with an uninstall and reinstall from the Play store.
S-Health just needed the updates uninstalled and it worked
Resco I just couldn't get to work at all.

Art mode goods and bads

When I got this beast phone I switched right away to art mode. Phone runs a bit better but then again after that there are downfalls too but obviously this is still beta where lollipop will run art mode only and will be stable.
Bad part is that with art some apps won't open up or work well. Force closing later on or what not.
Another bad part is that when you turn phone off and then black on it always does the Google apps back to art mode and takes a good 10-15 mins every boot up.
That's why I switched back to dalvik and now I have quick boot up and all else working better.
Hope this helped you all.

What apps are you using that FC under ART? Almost every mainstream app works fine these days.... I havent had any issues personally.

I too haven't had any issues just that several apps took a both to load up like Amazon and Facebook. What I hate is when turning phone back on their always has to be the process of the apps optimization for art
I've had at least three games FC under ART and some older apps I got as free apps from Amazon. The reboot thing is annoying as well, but the speed is great and it does seem to help battery life (that could just be usage variations by me though)

Yeah that's right and well actually running on art gave me a wordier battery life weirdly. Yesterday in dalvik I was able to achieve 17hrs of battery life with 6 hours sot

ART vs Dalvik: ART and performance loss ?

Hey there,
I've been using my S5 (G900F) since 3 months now, and I was using Dalvik as system runtime, and since ART was NEW-ish I didn't want to jump in yet ... until 3 weeks ago!
I tried ART runtime, the phone rebooted, done its stuff and for my surprise! the phone got slower and less responsive and the battery drained like hell!
I saw these problems:
Battery drain
Supper laggy apps! some of them break!
sometimes the phone freezes for a while (but I can see that the touch is working but no respond on many apps, even the lock screen!)
Private Mode wont work, and only works on Dalvik!
Slow performances, I didn't try benchmarking but I saw some important frame drops and slowliness on many games and apps!
Phone gets hotter than it should!
Sometimes I have to reboot it to get it to work!
My questions are:
Is it only me or it's common?
I have many apps installed on Dalvik, after ART they don't work (even n other phone it does work), why?
Why private mode is broken on ART?
Should I reset the device then ART-it then reinstall all my apps?
For info: my S5 is NOT rooted and still under warranty, I really don't want to root it now (cuz it will take me time cuz I'll be playing with it all the time) and I have the latest updates (for now ) and I got many apps broken after ART like Chrome and messaging apps and other tools!
Thanks

Battery Life Amazing Now

Recently my battery life has really been on the up and up. I'm not sure what it is but after all the app updates it has really flatlined, meaning I can get 2 days on it now. One extra thing I did was delete the cache under app storage along with another wipe cache partition. Previously also I used to notice my phone battery would drain at night but now it just pauses any drain. Anyways anyone noticing this?
I haven't noticed any improvements (Pure edition running 5.0). What build/version are you on?
I agree : I'm using mine in LTE mode, location in high accuracy mode, Google now activated, gmail outlook and corporate mails in push, all sync activated including drive and google + and WiFi off but always available for location : with that settings I have 18h off-battery with between 3h30 and 3h45 SOT.
For weekends, it last from Saturday morning to Sunday evening off-battery with between 1h30 and 1h45 SOT per day.
It is a XT1092 used in France, moto official ROM and no root.
I believe recent battery improvement to come from LTE network improvements : more cells, better signal= lots less work for my device.
I'm very satisfied. I have a few bugs on 5.0 but nothing huge, no random reboots or app crash. My only one deception : no 5.1 for my moto x for now and I want it because I like security and does not accept that a simple factory reset would allow a thief to use my encrypted device. I have heard 5.1 will correct this by asking thief to log on last known Google account to use the device.
It could also be the latest version of google play services finally fixed some memory leak and wakelocks

I am on the 5.0./pure version. Try the cache partition wipe as well as the storage cache wipe. Need to do both
Where are these cache wipe settings located at?
One is at wipe cache partition. Which requires a restart with buttons pushed. Google that one. The other one is under settings - storage - cache- delete apps cache

How do you clean battery stats in recovery?
I'm experiencing great battery too since a couple of days ago. It seems that the new Google Play Services fixes the memory drain. I did a wipe cache too but not a cache partition.
I cleared the app cache in settings and did a cache wipe from recovery and my battery life hasn't improved at all.

If you actually mean the battery stats, then that myth has been debunked ages ago: https://plus.google.com/105051985738280261832/posts/FV3LVtdVxPT

Is it best to let the battery full drain after doing this? Or anything else you recommend?
I had my battery heating up to 100+ degree and did a partition clear and it has helped with the heating but I still get less than a day with my battery. No root, 5.1.
I downgraded the other day to 4.4.4 - and for the first time since November, my phone's battery lasted me a full day from 6am - 11:30pm. I don't know why I didn't do this sooner.
I'm really doubting 5.1 is much better. Someone keep us posted on the battery life on 5.1. Otherwise, I'm content to stay on 4.4.4 for a longggg time.
I mentioned this to a coworker the other day. Its a very noticeable difference in battery life.
No changes here, I keep getting high cell standby usage (between 10 and 15%) and pretty bad battery life.
I can not figure it out! But Google is killing me!
