Fix for creaking battery cover. - G3 General

I noticed my G3 creaked a lot when gripping it a certain way. I figured a little creaking is normal (coming from unibody HTC One m7). Checked my girlfriends g3 and it had no creaking whatsoever. Based on information from a different forum, i placed a folded up piece of paper between the battery and the battery door. This literally eliminated all creaking. I was concerned with the safety of this method so i removed it. After this i was playing with the battery cover and was able to bend it in ( so it's tight with the battery) and have virtually made it creak free!
Hope this helps anybody else whos OCD was nagging at them [emoji14]
UPDATE: Basically its caused by the battery being loose. Some batteries fit tighter than others. This can explain why some people have no creaking at all and others do.

I'll give it a try.. The phone creaking was starting to irritate me

Mine was rubbing against the volume/power button area when i pressed the area making an annoying creak sound. I sanded the inside lip of the back cover just a little bit with a small piece of nail file.

Please tell me this is not true!
The G2 back cover also creaked and I hated it!

I think the cause is that the battery is a little bit loose and when the phone is flexed the battery will rub. The only solution I've found to COMPLETELY eliminate the creak is with the folded paper trick...
Odd that my girlfriends G3 (white) is completely creak free.

If you feel it's the battery area, then try putting multiple pieces of electrical tape on the back of the battery. Therefore when you take off the back cover you don't have to worry about a card falling out.

UPDATE: Any creaking you hear on your G3 is caused by the battery itself, NOT the phone or the battery door. I swapped batteries with my girlfriends G3 and I was not able to reproduce the creaking.

I used a thermal pad on my G2 to prevent creaking. You can get them in a variety of thicknesses, but usually a 0.5mm one is fine. Not only will it stop creaking, but it will also help remove heat from the battery.
Put the sticky side against the battery and leave the backing on the other side. Its not really that sticky, mores lightly tacky, so even if you remove all the backing it wont stick the back to the phone.
Something like these..

Mine is like a rock, no creaks at all ^_^ (unless I bend it, but that aint exactly real world usage..)My G2 creaked like mad though!

Third-party add-on request: Battery cover with handstrap clip

It is bothering me that I can't attach a strap to my HD2 which would help getting it out of pockets with cold hands, golves etc. and stop it being dropped. However HTC in their wisdom, or lack of, have not included a hand-strap hole.
So it occurred to me, if some kind souls would make an after-market battery cover with a small hole for a strap on the side (not back it'd be ugly), that would be perfect!
Hopefully will see one on ebay in the coming months!
Sounds dangerous to me, I can see problems with supporting the entire weight of the device by the battery cover while it's pulled out of pockets.
This way of preventing it being dropped would probably result in it being dropped more.
I agree that doing it on the side would be a bad idea, since pulling the sides of the battery cover is how it unlatches.
However, by reasoning along the same lines, it ought to work if done on the back of the phone, where by pulling you would cause the back cover to come together, thus tightening its grip on the sides of the phone.
In fact, I suppose that if you have a Dremel-like tool, you could get a thin drill bit and just drill two small holes in the cover and do it yourself.
The cover is really tight and I don't think it would come off easily with the strap attached.
Drilling is unfortunately not an option, as even if you drill holes, there'd be no space for a thread to go through, so it needs something that stands out a little too.

Fix for space between battery cover!!

After dying my battery cover (black instead of the dark gray color), I noticed that the space between my phone and battery cover was gone.
Heat a pot water on the stove on medium-low heat. You don't want the water anywhere near boiling as it will warp your battery cover. Once the water begins to steam over, that should be fine. Place the cover in the water for about 10 minutes and be sure to move the cover around so its not resting on the bottom of the hot pot. Remove, THOROUGHLY DRY, and replace the cover and hopefully your problem is solved....good luck

Its black to begin with, what color did you dye it??
Haha cool idea. I don't think I trust myself to boil my battery cover. But I definitely do have a gap on one side of my battery cover that gets on my nerves whenever I hold my phone. I'm waiting for replacement battery covers to hit the market (preferably crystal clear ones) to hopefully fix the issue.
You "dyed" it by putting it in semi-boiling water?
LOL seriously?
I dyed it using RIT Dye in hot water. I wanted to see if I could get it darker than it originally was. My cover was more of a shade of gray than black.

this is an old trick from the Diamond HTC age, look for further instructions on here and the right kind of paint by doing a search if your interested, pretty impressive colors possible w/ the Diamond, would be curious on the EVO, heck maybe we can get a white cover and stick it to best buy
Ahh, didn't see a mention of any dye. Figured there was something else to it.
Thats actually where I got the idea to dye the cover. I remembered that thread for the diamond way back when. I figured it would work since the Evo has a similar soft coating on it.

What gap are you referring to?
My battery cover sticks out/not flush with the phone casing on the speaker side. My middle finger rests right on it while holding the phone, drives me crazy.
Any pictures of what it looks like?

My EVO and my wife's EVO both are like this as well.
I fixed it just by folding a sticky note and putting it between the battery and the cover, forced the edges down.

This is my 7th htc phone since my 6600 and 3rd one to have battery cover issues. The vogue and TP were terrible. The battery covers would creak and snap every time you pressed on the phone. I ended up piling up several layers of tape to remedy it.
I guess on the bright side, the evo doesn't creak
Take a sticky note and fold it in half two or three times. Just put that between your battery cover and the battery.

Creaky plastic

Anyone else noticing how bad the plastic battery cover is on this phone? Everytime i hold it creaks. Doesnt make it feel like a quality device. Anyone else in the same boat of do i have a crappy back cover?
Not creaky here...nice tight fit
Mine fits great as well. No issues.
Ive taken the back cover off at least 20 times since the 8th. My phone feels solid, no creaky feel what so ever.
Same as with everyone else, my phone feels and sounds solid. No creaks here.
only if I really try to make it creak.

maybe you cover is not snapped on all the way??
mine is also fine..
Yea i think that im going to get another battery cover. Mine is creaky towards the bottom left. Almost like its not snapping together correctly. The main reason i returned the HTC Surround was for the creaky battery cover. It gave me nightmares because i dealt with a G1 for 2 years with that problem.
never had a creak but i would suggest getting a tight fit cover for the phone. Mine is red and black and the brand is case mate...awesome cover to protect my sweet ass phone!
I've noticed I get some creak in the top left corner above the camera, nothing major though since I never hold the phone by that corner.
I would say it's a faulty cover (return/exchange the phone) or it hasn't seated or snapped into place properly even though it looks like it's in place.
It is plastic and makes the phone super light weight.
I returned mine and got one back in which the cover is perfect.
Also, the screen is a bit brighter (same settings) and the audio sounds a bit better. I also ordered a screen protector and case (smoke plastic) which works great.
The phone is very impressive now.

Squeaking battery door?

Anyone else have a squeaking battery door? On mine its right below the volume rocker on the edge, when I press on it, it goes in a little and squeaks. I feel like it's the shape of the door that doesnt let it sit completely flush. Not a big deal but kind of annoying
Mine also squeaks...but I don't have that problem anymore after I replace it with the flip cover case.
After making sure all the notches are snapped in, my cover is completely solid. It sort of becomes one with the phone, actually.
I have seen that allot with Samsung phones. I have an Infuse and the same thing, creaky flimsy back cover. You press in certain areas and it gives and creaks. Just crap flimsy design IMHO.
Yeah I too have the creaking near the volume keys, even after double-checking back cover snapped on properly. Seems like a unfortunate side effect of not being delicate enough when yanking off the battery cover.
Didn't have this issue with the SGS2, but then again the cover isn't as big, which meant I didn't flex it as much when opening the phone up.
Ordered a OEM replacement back cover from eBay to fix the prob as bit annoyed by the creaking feeling.
Maybe when someone releases a metal backcover we won't have to worry about this ever again (although the phone would be a lot heavier!)
Can't you just put some plastic tapes on the inner back cover where the squeaking happens? I think it's nothing to worry about, it happened to nearly all phones I've ever owned
Although I would want the stylus holder to have a bit more firm snap

[GUIDE] How To Fix Squeaky Battery Cover!

Hi guys, I've owned an Xperia Play since July 2011, since then I've had some 'Battery Cover' issues. First, let's start off by talking about the battery cover itself, well actually there's not much to say. If you have an Xperia Play you already know the battery cover is very cheap, it's a large rectangular piece of plastic that covers the entire back on the phone, it's a pain to get it off and on at times. So not only it is cheaply made, it also has the tendency to start 'squeaking' or 'creaking' after a while. This simple issue can be fixed my ordering a new back piece to replace the old one, but note, if you swap batteries, swap SIM cards, swap SD cards, or anything that involves taking the battery cover off, it WILL, at some point in time, get worn out and slightly bent out of place. There's no escaping this problem due to it's design. In the past I've ordered about 3 Black battery cover replacements, and each one of them, after sometime, became creaky. Now maybe I'm just being picky but I REALLY hate picking up my phone and hearing that *squeaky* sound. It annoys the piss out of me. So I've came up with a way to prevent / fix this. What I'm about to guide you through is EXTREMELY simple and shouldn't cost you more than $2... ENJOY
SUPPLIES: Electrical Tape & Scissors
(1) Hold your phone to where the back is facing you, gently but firmly press all around until you've found your squeaky area. ( take a mental note of where this spot is )
(2) Remove the battery cover.
(3) Cut off a piece or two of electrical tape according to the size of the squeaky area, place the electrical tape on the inside of the battery cover where you took a mental note of.
(4) Put the battery cover back on! You're all done! No more squeaking!
It worked for me, it should definitely work for you! Try it out and post your results! Don't forget to *Thank* me!
(I've included a picture of what the results look like, lol I'm sure we all know what a piece of tape looks like on a piece of plastic but yeah here's one in case you don't!)
Thanks, no more squeaking!
I dont care about the squeaking that much, but still, u made my play better!

Glad I could help! Sure beats spending $10-15 for a new back.
Yep. I used strong masking tape.

I've replaced the battery lid a few times but I've never had the creaking problem. I wonder if it has something to do with the CDMA version not having the space for the SIM card.
Anyway, I do agree that they are poorly made. My first one developed cracks around the pry point and around the top even before I got a second battery. Obviously, battery swapping means I open it more often than most users, but I was EXTREMELY careful. Eventually I lost the corner next to the power button. On my replacement I made sure to never use the pry point without relieving pressure by pulling the corners too (usually unclipping them first). I also used a stick-on carbon-fiber protector from the day I installed it till the day I replaced it. It eventually formed a crack by the pry point too. Argh!
