I didn't realize he is such a badass. Namely - exploiting software on the Playstation, getting sued by Sony for it, then (likely) having buddies exploit more of Sony's vulnerabilities in a hack which inevitably lead Sony to back down and ask him to "please never hack our software again." (paraphrasing, of course)
I've just gained quite a bit of respect for this guy. :highfive:

That's what the article says. I wasn't aware that he was the one who developed the first "jailbreak" method on the iPhone. I remember using that during my iPhone days back in 2008/2009.
He's like the real life version of Johny Lee Miller (AKA 'Zero Cool', AKA 'Crash Override') from Hackers.
Indeed he is
LGG3 and beyond
He has been hired by Google to do what he does best, hack! In order to help make the general internet a safer place for us all.
He is not doing anything Android based, and just because he is hired by Google for this project (technically I think he is more of a consultant) doesn't mean he cannot continue his usual 'work' hacking mobile os'

I wonder why that happened.
Maybe it's because people have been getting steadily more and more tech savvy over the last couple of years, since the introduction of mainstream smartphones with all carriers.
And, of course, more tech savvy people know that iphone is just a toy.
Clarification: It was #1 in sales for the quarter. Not sure what it's market share is overall, but it's moving fast.

Wait, but condoms aren't gre.... errr I see what you did there.
As a self proclaimed techno-geek I can tell you that what grabbed my attention was the "what droid gets" commercials. Those started me on a search for a droid device and I grabbed the EVO on launch day. My contract with Verizon had just expired and even though it was their commercial, I went with Sprint.
Got the wife a Samsung Moment and she is on that thing more than I'm on my EVO
how many android devices can you name that were out this time last year though, these numbers don't mean anything. the hero, moment, droid, eris, incredible, evo, even the backflip are counted as opposed to counting JUST the magic and G1.. really meaningless. if it happens again Q4 this year or later then it will mean everything though.
google ftw

Google only has so much power. If they want yo offer some of these services they news to cooperate with Netflix, MPAA, etc. I think some of these blogs/people are blowing this out of proportion.
Tapa tapa tapa
The article sounds a bit hysterical to me, going for fearmongering which surprises me coming from Kendrick who I usually agree with. This feels like those Apple commissioned "Android is tracking you too!" articles that came out during the recent iPhone privacy problems.
The fact that both Netflix and Google are doing this only with videos makes very clear what is inspiring it...they are afraid of getting sued by some deep-pocketed movie studio in an RIAA style vendetta because some wizkid found a way around DRM on a rooted device and passed 100 copies of Avatar 5 or something. At the very least that possibility could make the studios deny their content to Android while still suppling it to tight-as-a-drum iPhones and ipads. That would be bad.
This seems like an altogether healthy and intelligent step for Google to take to protect android's future growth. I can't see Andy "Privacy? Where?" Rubin fighting an all out campaign against rooted Android devices...and the carriers won't since they they know rooted phones are a big draw against the iPhone.
This is definetly bloggers just looking for negative android stories to please Cupertino.

i dont think anything will happen for rooted users.
its what makes android / google so unique, Free from the closed source community.
if they where to clamp down on rooted users it would put off a lot of users, maybe making them switch to another OS.. google dont want that.
Anyway, its our device so its upto us what we do with it, we know that rooting voids our warranty / improves chances of bricking, but we do it still...
android is for the experienced phone user, if it wasnt hackable, i dont think we would like it so much

I sure hope not and I pray that this doesn't catch on. With HTC doing their best to make rooting custom ROMs impossible and app vendors deciding they don't want to run on rooted phones at all that might give others ideas ... When all's said and done jailbroken iPhone users might have more freedom than we do.

First, I know that it is true, but it is not the first step in an antirooting war that Kendrick tries to present it as. Therefore, it is fearmongering.
Second, since all such downloads go through Apple's proprietary money spinner called iTunes, it is a much more controllable environment than android with the market. Apple has pledged itself from the first iPod to be all about DRM....Google not so much.

Personally I dig it only because I like Google and want to see them armed with an arsenal of patents so that Android won't be killed by patent trolls. Never had a Moto phone myself but I haven't heard great things. Aren't they known for having crappy, break apart build quality?

Well I will probably get flack for this, but here goes. Before you get all happy about this aquisition by Google. Remember who Motorola has been in bed with for the better part of their phone "Greatness" , Verizon . The original we're going to throttle your data, you better not be tethering (even though your paying for unlimited) , if we can't charge you for it you can't do it, we're going to control everything you do on your phone carrier. So even though it's Google new company, the employees are still the old regime. With the old habits, especially the Executives. I'll always remember a quote from one of Verizon's press releases stating " the Companies bottom line is always the most important aspect in considerations involving customers" . I understand this true for any company. But to say it in a press release like that says a lot about how they perceive their customer base. Yes, I understand this is only my opinon
No flack here, you make avalid point

Wouldn't make sense. HTC makes great phones but do not have the large patent portfolio that Moto has built up over many years in the mobile industry.
^ Shift Faced
i live in seattle and googles from redmond, theyve been on the news about this quite a bit and theyve even said themselves they just wanted the patent portfolio to help in defending android and the developers against apple, microsoft and the rest of the other bull**** patent trolls.
I see where this will certainly help Google, and Motorola, with regards to patent lawsuits. But how will this help Samsung, and HTC? Is Google going to step in, and say "Get out of here, patent troll....check this out....PWNT!!!"

I'd imagine that since these patents are typically incredibly vague such as "scrolling menus" that if Apple sues HTC or Samsung over infringing on one of their vaguely worded patents then Google could jump in and brandish one of their equally vague patents and say that Google actually has the patent for it, not Apple.

just so yall know i didnt see a splash screen for this new motoroogle or googlerola or whatever you want lol (it has only been a day) so i decided to make one. I posted it on im.nick.hellos new thread for splash screens along with some others i made.
I just have to wait for him to convert them into splash img format and a flashable.
SO GO CHECK IT OUT
BTW: I hope im not hijacking the thread. I dont think i am because it is technically about the thread in a way. but if i am please set me straight!
Edit: In regards to the post above there is no real reason to buy HTC
1)they are doing great on there own
2) HTC would not give up sense and google would not want sense
3) HTC would be like 3X the amount that Motorola was
4)Motorola already had made the commitment to android and that was its sole operating system unlike HTC where they make phones for WP7 and Android.
4) Motorolas patent portfolio is much bigger
5) Motorolas not getting sued lol
Just my 2 cents theres probably other reasons too
Google did it for the Patents
I heard its to help cover their a$$ with apple lawsuits

it appears that Samsung and Google have decided not to launch the Galaxy Nexus (or Nexus Prime, or whatever it's called) and Ice Cream Sandwich at their October 11th Unpacked event. The two companies sent out a joint announcement reading:
Samsung and Google decide to postpone the new product announcement at CTIA Fall. We agree that it is just not the right time to announce a new product. New date and venue will be shortly announced.
The press event on the 11th was expected to be not only the debut for the successor to the Nexus S, but our first good look at the next version of Android. For whatever reason the companies have decided to delay that launch. But, if Eric Schmidt is true to his word, we shouldn't have to wait too much longer... he did promise us that it would launch by November. We'll let you know as soon as we get a new date to expect "something big."
Update: A Samsung spokesperson issued a follow up statement to CNET, confirming speculation that the reveal was postponed out of respect, following the passing of Steve Jobs. "We believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs's passing," the spokesperson explained.

If you read.....they are only delaying the announcement not the release date. The delay of the announcement days after Steves passing is respectable and I actually like google/samsung more for doing so. Without the launch of the phone I think smartphones wouldn't be where they are today due to competitiveness.
It's basically just good public relations.
You don't want to make a major product announcement in an environment where it is not the biggest story of the day. The tech press and the mainstream media are still focused on Jobs and Apple.

no, ICS is the next Android update that Google is making. it's going to merge Honeycomb and Gingerbread into one OS, and then it will be released to companies like Moto and Samsung. then we will see an ICS update in the future, with blur or touchwiz incorporated into the system.
it's just the next major update to Android ICS = Ice Cream Sandwich.
